The Sun is depleted in refractory elements compared to nearby solar twins, which may be linked to the formation of giant or terrestrial planets. Here we present high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectroscopic data for 17 solar-like stars hosting planets, obtained with Magellan II/MIKE, to investigate whether this depletion is related to planet formation. We derive stellar parameters, including stellar atmosphere, age, radius, mass, and chemical abundances for 22 elements from carbon to europium through line-by-line differential analysis. Our uncertainties range from 0.01 dex for Fe and Si to 0.08 dex for Sr, Y, and Eu. By comparing the solar abundances to those of the 17 stars, we investigate the differential abundance ([X/Fe]$_{\rm solar}$ - [X/Fe]$_{\rm star}$) versus condensation temperature ($T_c$) trend. In particular, we apply Galactic chemical evolution corrections to five solar twins within the full sample. Our results conform to previous studies that the Sun is relatively depleted in refractory compared to volatile elements. For both five solar twins and the rest of solar-like stars, we find that all stars hosting known gas giant planets exhibit negative $T_c$ trend slopes, suggesting that the Sun is relatively depleted in refractory elements compared to similar giant-planet-host stars. Additionally, we find no correlation between $T_c$ trend slopes and the total mass of detected terrestrial planets in each system, suggesting that terrestrial planet formation may not be the cause of refractory element depletion in the Sun., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures, 7 tables; accepted for publication in ApJ

This booklet on Active Assisted Living (AAL) technologies has been created as part of the GoodBrother COST Action, which has run from 2020 to 2024. COST Actions are European research programs that promote collaboration across borders, uniting researchers, professionals, and institutions to address key societal challenges. GoodBrother focused on ethical and privacy concerns surrounding video and audio monitoring in care settings. The aim was to ensure that while AAL technologies help older adults and vulnerable individuals, their privacy and data protection rights remain a top priority. This booklet is designed to guide you through the role that AAL technologies play in improving the quality of life for older adults, caregivers, and people with disabilities. AAL technologies offer tools for those facing cognitive or physical challenges. They can enhance independence, assist with daily routines, and promote a safer living environment. However, the rise of these technologies also brings important questions about data protection and user autonomy. This resource is intended for a wide audience, including end users, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and policymakers. It provides practical guidance on integrating AAL technologies into care settings while safeguarding privacy and ensuring ethical use. The insights offered here aim to empower users and caregivers to make informed choices that enhance both the quality of care and respect for personal autonomy.

Over a quarter of white dwarfs have photospheric metal pollution, which is evidence for recent accretion of exoplanetary material. While a wide range of mechanisms have been proposed to account for this pollution, there are currently few observational constraints to differentiate between them. To investigate the driving mechanism, we observe a sample of polluted and non-polluted white dwarfs in wide binary systems with main-sequence stars. Using the companion stars' metallicities as a proxy for the white dwarfs' primordial metallicities, we compare the metallicities of polluted and non-polluted systems. Because there is a well-known correlation between giant planet occurrence and higher metallicity (with a stronger correlation for close-in and eccentric planets), these metallicity distributions can be used to probe the role of gas giants in white dwarf accretion. We find that the metallicity distributions of polluted and non-polluted systems are consistent with the hypothesis that both samples have the same underlying metallicity distribution. However, we note that this result is likely biased by several selection effects. Additionally, we find no significant trend between white dwarf accretion rates and metallicity. We establish some relations between the perimeter, the area and the visual angle of a planar compact convex set. Our first result states that Crofton's formula is the unique universal formula relating the visual angle, length and area. After that we give a characterization of convex sets of constant width by means of the behaviour of its isotopic sets at infinity. Also for this class of convex sets we prove that the existence of an isotopic circle is enough to ensure that the considered set is a disc.

In the ongoing effort towards a scalable quantum computer, multiple technologies have been proposed. Some of them exploit topological materials to process quantum information. In this work, we propose a lattice of photonic cavities with alternating hoppings to create a modified multidomain SSH chain, that is, a sequence of topological insulators made from chains of dimers. A qubit is then coupled to each boundary. We show this system is well suited for quantum information processing because topological transfer of photons through this one-dimensional lattice can entangle any set of qubits on demand, providing a scalable quantum platform. We verify this claim evaluating entanglement measures and witnesses proving that bipartite and multipartite entanglement is produced, even in the presence of some disorder., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

Over the past several decades, conventional spectral analysis techniques of polluted white dwarfs have become powerful tools to learn about the geology and chemistry of extrasolar bodies. Despite their proven capabilities and extensive legacy of scientific discoveries, these techniques are however still limited by their manual, time-intensive, and iterative nature. As a result, they are susceptible to human errors and are difficult to scale up to population-wide studies of metal pollution. This paper seeks to address this problem by presenting cecilia, the first Machine Learning (ML)-powered spectral modeling code designed to measure the metal abundances of intermediate-temperature (10,000$\leq T_{\rm eff} \leq$20,000 K), Helium-rich polluted white dwarfs. Trained with more than 22,000 randomly drawn atmosphere models and stellar parameters, our pipeline aims to overcome the limitations of classical methods by replacing the generation of synthetic spectra from computationally expensive codes and uniformly spaced model grids, with a fast, automated, and efficient neural-network-based interpolator. More specifically, cecilia combines state-of-the-art atmosphere models, powerful artificial intelligence tools, and robust statistical techniques to rapidly generate synthetic spectra of polluted white dwarfs in high-dimensional space, and enable accurate ($\lesssim$0.1 dex) and simultaneous measurements of 14 stellar parameters -- including 11 elemental abundances -- from real spectroscopic observations. As massively multiplexed astronomical surveys begin scientific operations, cecilia's performance has the potential to unlock large-scale studies of extrasolar geochemistry and propel the field of white dwarf science into the era of Big Data. We present a catalogue of 62 polluted white dwarfs observed by the 9th Low-Resolution Data Release of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST LRS DR9v1; R$\approx$1,800) and the Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) of the Gaia Mission. Among these stellar remnants, 30 are new discoveries with previously unknown traces of calcium pollution. To generate our catalogue, we used a database of 4,324 unique Gaia EDR3 white dwarf candidates with LAMOST LRS DR9v1 observations, many of which have been spectroscopically confirmed by other telescopes. For these stars, we developed a quantitative method to detect calcium absorption in their spectra between 3,900-4,000$\mathring {\mathrm A}$, which we then validated through visual inspection and multiple literature cross-checks. Our catalogue provides the astrometric and photometric properties of the white dwarf candidates, incorporates supplementary data (e.g. Montreal White Dwarf Database, MWDD; PanSTARRS; the Hubble Space Telescope), and indicates the possibility of calcium pollution in their atmospheres. For our final sample of polluted white dwarfs, we also determine the main atmospheric properties of 23 sources with effective temperatures $T_{\rm eff}$$\leq$25,000K and no existing calcium abundances in the MWDD. Our analysis represents a first step towards measuring the full atmospheric composition of these stars and learning about the bulk properties of their accreted material. We propose and analyze a scalable and fully autonomous scheme for preparing spatially distributed multiqubit entangled states in a dual-rail waveguide QED setup. In this approach, arrays of qubits located along two separated waveguides are illuminated by correlated photons from the output of a nondegenerate parametric amplifier. These photons drive the qubits into different classes of pure entangled steady states, for which the degree of multipartite entanglement can be conveniently adjusted by the chosen pattern of local qubit-photon detunings. Numerical simulations for moderate-sized networks show that the preparation time for these complex multiqubit states increases at most linearly with the system size and that one may benefit from an additional speedup in the limit of a large amplifier bandwidth. Therefore, this scheme offers an intriguing new route for distributing ready-to-use multipartite entangled states across large quantum networks, without requiring any precise pulse control and relying on a single Gaussian entanglement source only., Comment: Main: 7 pages and 4 figures; Supplementary material: 8 pages and 3 figures

Solid-state electrolytes (SSE) with high ion conductivity are pivotal for the development and large-scale adoption of green-energy conversion and storage technologies such as fuel cells, electrocatalysts and solid-state batteries. Yet, SSE are extremely complex materials for which general rational design principles remain indeterminate. Here, we unite first-principles materials modelling, computational power and modern data analysis techniques to advance towards the solution of such a fundamental and technologically pressing problem. Our data-driven survey reveals that the correlations between ion diffusivity and other materials descriptors in general are monotonic, although not necessarily linear, and largest when the latter are of vibrational nature and explicitly incorporate anharmonic effects. Surprisingly, principal component and k-means clustering analysis show that elastic and vibrational descriptors, rather than the usual ones related to chemical composition and ion mobility, are best suited for reducing the high complexity of SSE and classifying them into universal classes. Our findings highlight the need of considering databases that incorporate temperature effects to improve our understanding of SSE and point towards a generalized approach to the design of energy materials., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

HD 191939 (TOI-1339) is a nearby (d=54pc), bright (V=9mag), and inactive Sun-like star (G9 V) known to host a multi-planet transiting system. Ground-based spectroscopic observations confirmed the planetary nature of the three transiting sub-Neptunes (HD 191939 b, c, and d) originally detected by TESS and were used to measure the masses for planets b and c with 3$\sigma$ precision. These previous observations also reported the discovery of an additional Saturn-mass planet (HD 191939 e) and evidence for a further, very long-period companion (HD 191939 f). Here, we report the discovery of a new non-transiting planet in the system and a refined mass determination of HD 191939 d. The new planet, HD 191939 g, has a minimum mass of 13.5$\pm$2.0 M$_\oplus$ and a period of about 280 d. This period places the planet within the conservative habitable zone of the host star, and near a 1:3 resonance with HD 191939 e. The compilation of 362 radial velocity measurements with a baseline of 677 days from four different high-resolution spectrographs also allowed us to refine the properties of the previously known planets, including a 4.6$\sigma$ mass determination for planet d, for which only a 2$\sigma$ upper limit had been set until now. We confirm the previously suspected low density of HD 191939 d, which makes it an attractive target for attempting atmospheric characterisation. Overall, the planetary system consists of three sub-Neptunes interior to a Saturn-mass and a Uranus-mass planet plus a high-mass long-period companion. This particular configuration has no counterpart in the literature and makes HD 191939 an exceptional multi-planet transiting system with an unusual planet demographic worthy of future observation., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 20 pages, 8 figures

On this PhD thesis we cover the results contained in arXiv:2001.07050, arXiv:2111.10096 and arXiv:2011.02822, while providing further details about their derivations. In the first two papers, we study the generation and detection of entangled non-Gaussian states of microwave radiation. These states are produced in a new parametric oscillator, built recently within the field of cQED, capable of down-converting a microwave tone into three different tones at once. These three photons share among their magnitudes quantum correlations, in particular genuine entanglement. In this text we refer to it as non-Gaussian because of its manifestation on statistical moments higher than covariances, and we propose a simple and practical criterion for the design of witnesses capable of detecting it: they must be built from higher statistical moments that change through time. Additionally, we speculate on the theoretical implications of the criterion and find suggestive connections to other entanglement classes, such as the paradigmatic nonequivalent GHZ and W three qubit states. In the third paper, we explore one of the possible applications of quantum technologies: analog simulation of quantum systems. The literature prior to this thesis showcases multiple examples of superconducting circuits capable of mimicking systems in which one must consider both quantum and relativistic phenomena, such as the dynamical Casimir and Unruh effects. Digital evidence underpin the majority of crimes as their analysis is an integral part of almost every criminal investigation. Even if we temporarily disregard the numerous challenges in the collection and analysis of digital evidence, the exchange of the evidence among the different stakeholders has many thorny issues. Of specific interest are cross-border criminal investigations as the complexity is significantly high due to the heterogeneity of legal frameworks which beyond time bottlenecks can also become prohibiting. The aim of this article is to analyse the current state of practice of cross-border investigations considering the efficacy of current collaboration protocols along with the challenges and drawbacks to be overcome. Further to performing a legally-oriented research treatise, we recall all the challenges raised in the literature and discuss them from a more practical yet global perspective. Thus, this article paves the way to enabling practitioners and stakeholders to leverage horizontal strategies to fill in the identified gaps timely and accurately.

We investigate the deterministic generation and distribution of entanglement in large quantum networks by driving distant qubits with the output fields of a non-degenerate parametric amplifier. In this setting, the amplifier produces a continuous Gaussian two-mode squeezed state, which acts as a quantum-correlated reservoir for the qubits and relaxes them into a highly entangled steady state. Here we are interested in the maximal amount of entanglement and the optimal entanglement generation rates that can be achieved with this scheme under realistic conditions taking, in particular, the finite amplifier bandwidth, waveguide losses and propagation delays into account. By combining exact numerical simulations of the full network with approximate analytic results, we predict the optimal working point for the amplifier and the corresponding qubit-qubit entanglement under various conditions. Our findings show that this passive conversion of Gaussian- into discrete- variable entanglement offers a robust and experimentally very attractive approach for operating large optical, microwave or hybrid quantum networks, for which efficient parametric amplifiers are currently developed., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures
