We use Ramsey interferometry to study spin dynamics in the strongly interacting regime of spin-orbit-coupled quantum gases in one-dimensional optical lattices. We observe an intrinsic many-body dephasing mechanism immune to spin-echo in two-component Mott insulators. We ascribe the dephasing to the motion of hole-like defects in an otherwise inert Mott insulator, the spinless nature of the holes explaining the ineffectiveness of spin echo to restore it. We show that a model of spin-orbit-coupled hardcore bosons can explain quantitatively our experimental observations., Comment: Supplementary Material available as ancillary file

Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often experience challenges in health, communication, and sensory processing; therefore, early diagnosis is necessary for proper treatment and care. In this work, we consider the problem of detecting or classifying ASD children to aid medical professionals in early diagnosis. We develop a deep learning model that analyzes video clips of children reacting to sensory stimuli, with the intent of capturing key differences in reactions and behavior between ASD and non-ASD participants. Unlike many recent studies in ASD classification with MRI data, which require expensive specialized equipment, our method utilizes a powerful but relatively affordable GPU, a standard computer setup, and a video camera for inference. Results show that our model effectively generalizes and understands key differences in the distinct movements of the children. It is noteworthy that our model exhibits successful classification performance despite the limited amount of data for a deep learning problem and limited temporal information available for learning, even with the motion artifacts., Comment: Poster Abstract. G351.16+0.70 is a relatively well-studied High Mass Star Forming Region with at least two main bipolar outflow structures originating from an OB embedded star and multiple IR cores. Using high-resolution and large bandwidth SMA observations, we studied its molecular content to probe the emission of iCOMs which could be related to the bipolar outflows or their jets. We analyzed the emission spectra in the 1mm band within 8 GHz bandwidth coverage, from 216.75 to 220.75 GHz, and from 228.75 to 232.75 GHz. Employing the LTE approximation using the XCLASS software, we identified 260 emission lines arising from iCOMs. The emission lines in the synthetic emission spectra could be explained by 11 iCOMs and 5 molecular isotopologues. Additionally, we analyzed the outstanding broad iCOM emission lines by using integrated and velocity field maps, searching for extended emission and velocity gradients related to molecular outflows. Ro-vibrational transitions of CH$_3$OH, C$_2$H$_3$CN, CH$_3$OCHO, CH$_3$COCH$_3$, and aGg'-(CH$_2$OH)$_2$ present evidence of extended emission that does not fit with spherical morphology and that follows the path of the low-velocity $^{13}$CO outflow. The multiple outflows in the system are revealed also by the CO (2-1) and SiO (5-4) emission, but in particular we have discovered a so-called extremely high velocity outflow ($|V_{Max}-V_{LSR}|\sim 60$ km s$^{-1}$). The interstellar medium contains dust and gas, in which at high densities and cold conditions molecules can proliferate. Interstellar Complex Organic Molecules (iCOMs) are C-bearing species that contain at least six atoms. As they are detected in young stellar objects, iCOMs are expected to inhabit the early stages of the star formation evolution. In this study, we try to determine which iCOMs are present in the outflow component of massive protostars. To do this, we analyzed the morphological extension of blue- and red-shifted iCOMs emission in a sample of eleven massive protostars employing mapping observations at one mm within a ~1 GHz bandwidth for both IRAM-30m and APEX telescopes. We modeled the iCOMs emission of the central pointing spectra of our objects using the XCLASS LTE radiative transfer code. We detected the presence of several iCOMs such as: CH3OH, 13CH3OH, CH3OCHO, C2H5C15N, and c-C3H2)CH2. In G034.41+0.24, G327.29-0.58, G328.81+0.63, G333.13-0.43, G340.97-1.02, G351.45+0.66 and G351.77-0.54, the iCOMs lines show a faint broad line profile. Due to the offset peak positions of the blue- and red-shifted emission, covering from ~0.1 to 0.5 pc, these wings are possibly related to movements external to the compact core, such as large-scale low-velocity outflows. We have also established a correlation between the parent iCOM molecule CH3OH and the shock tracer SiO, reinforcing the hypothesis that shock environments provide the conditions to boost the formation of iCOMs via gas-phase reactions., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables, accepted to APJS

A classical result of Baer states that a finite group $ G $ which is the product of two normal supersoluble subgroups is supersoluble if and only if $ G' $ is nilpotent. In this article we show that if $ G=AB $ is the product of supersoluble (respectively, $ w $-supersoluble) subgroups $ A $ and $ B $, $ A $ is normal in $ G $, $ B $ permutes with every maximal subgroup of each Sylow subgroup of $ A $, then $ G $ is supersoluble (respectively, $ w $-supersoluble) provided that $ G' $ is nilpotent. Traditional techniques for handling Byzantine failures are expensive: digital signatures are too costly, while using $3f{+}1$ replicas is uneconomical ($f$ denotes the maximum number of Byzantine processes). We seek algorithms that reduce the number of replicas to $2f{+}1$ and minimize the number of signatures. While the first goal can be achieved in the message-and-memory model, accomplishing the second goal simultaneously is challenging. We first address this challenge for the problem of broadcasting messages reliably. We consider two variants of this problem, Consistent Broadcast and Reliable Broadcast, typically considered very close. Perhaps surprisingly, we establish a separation between them in terms of signatures required. In particular, we show that Consistent Broadcast requires at least 1 signature in some execution, while Reliable Broadcast requires $O(n)$ signatures in some execution. We present matching upper bounds for both primitives within constant factors. We then turn to the problem of consensus and argue that this separation matters for solving consensus with Byzantine failures: we present a practical consensus algorithm that uses Consistent Broadcast as its main communication primitive. This algorithm works for $n=2f{+}1$ and avoids signatures in the common-case -- properties that have not been simultaneously achieved previously. Overall, our work approaches Byzantine computing in a frugal manner and motivates the use of Consistent Broadcast -- rather than Reliable Broadcast -- as a key primitive for reaching agreement., Comment: This paper is an extended version of the DISC 2021 paper

We study the dynamics of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of $^{174}$Yb atoms coherently driven on a narrow optical transition. The excitation transfers the BEC to a superposition of states with different internal and momentum quantum numbers. We observe a crossover with decreasing driving strength between a regime of damped oscillations, where coherent driving prevails, and an incoherent regime, where relaxation takes over. Several relaxation mechanisms are involved: inelastic losses involving two excited atoms, leading to a non-exponential decay of populations; Doppler broadening due to the finite momentum width of the BEC and inhomogeneous elastic interactions, both leading to dephasing and to damping of the oscillations. We compare our observations to a two-component Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) model that fully includes these effects. For small or moderate densities, the damping of the oscillations is mostly due to Doppler broadening. In this regime, we find excellent agreement between the model and the experimental results. For higher densities, the role of interactions increases and so does the damping rate of the oscillations. The damping in the GP model is less pronounced than in the experiment, possibly a hint for many-body effects not captured by the mean-field description., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures; supplementary material available as ancillary file

We present sensitive high angular resolution ($\sim$ 0.1$''$ -- 0.3$''$) continuum ALMA (The Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array) observations of the archetypal hot core located in Orion-KL. The observations were made in five different spectral bands (bands 3, 6, 7, 8, and 9) covering a very broad range of frequencies (149 -- 658 GHz). Apart of the well-know millimeter emitting objects located in this region (Orion Source I and BN), we report the first submillimeter detection of three compact continuum sources (ALMA 1-3) in the vicinities of the Orion-KL hot molecular core. These three continuum objects have spectral indices between 1.47 to 1.56, and brightness temperatures between 100 to 200 K at 658 GHz suggesting that we are seeing moderate optically thick dust emission with possible grain growth. However, as these objects are not associated with warm molecular gas, and some of them are farther out from the molecular core, we thus conclude that they cannot heat the molecular core. This result favours the hypothesis that the hot molecular core in Orion-KL core is heated externally., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

We report on high-resolution optical spectroscopy of interacting bosonic $^{174}$Yb atoms in deep optical lattices with negligible tunneling. We prepare Mott insulator phases with singly- and doubly-occupied isolated sites and probe the atoms using an ultra-narrow "clock" transition. Atoms in singly-occupied sites undergo long-lived Rabi oscillations. Atoms in doubly-occupied sites are strongly affected by interatomic interactions, and we measure their inelastic decay rates and energy shifts. We deduce from these measurements all relevant collisional parameters involving both clock states, in particular the intra- and inter-state scattering lengths.

Topological properties of crystals and quasicrystals is a subject of recent and growing interest. This Letter reports an experiment where, for certain quasicrystals, these properties can be directly retrieved from diffraction. We directly observe, using an interferometric approach, all the topological invariants of finite-length Fibonacci chains in their diffraction pattern.
