We report the development of a polylactic acid/polycaprolactone (PLA/PCL) nanofiber dressing with rifampicin (RIF) incorporated, designed as a drug delivery system for treating and counteracting problems caused by antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The dressing was obtained by electrospinning and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The RIF content in the dressing was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Its release was evaluated in a physiological liquid medium and in an in vivo study using rats. The nanofibers showed a diameter close to 200 nm. There were not found significant alterations in the FTIR spectra or in the thermal properties of the dressing components after the electrospinning process. The HPLC evaluation suggested that the electrospinning process did not generate chemical changes to RIF, which was incorporated into the dressing with an efficiency >98%. RIF was efficiently released from the dressing into the physiological liquid medium and efficiently released and transdermally absorbed in vivo, being identified in the urine of the animals from 6 to 48 h after starting its administration. Nanoparticles of magnetite passivated with gelatin and starch were synthesised using a co‐precipitation technique. The nanoparticles were characterised using ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis), dynamic light scattering (DLS), Zeta potential, transmission electron microscope (TEM), X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The UV–vis spectra showed characteristic surface plasmon resonance of magnetite nanoparticles. The DLS results showed the nanoparticles to have average hydrodynamic diameters of 138 ± 2 and 283 ± 21 nm for particles passivated with gelatin and starch, respectively. The stability in a colloidal solution was greater in nanoparticles passivated with gelatin than nanoparticles obtained with starch, as can be seen by their Zeta potential value (−31 ± 2 and −16 ± 0.5 mV, respectively). According to the TEM evaluation, the use of gelatin allowed to obtain nanoparticles with a spherical morphology and an average size of 10 ± 2 nm. However, when using starch the nanoparticles exhibited diverse morphologies with an average size of 25 ± 7 nm. The XRD results confirmed the crystalline structure of the samples, which showed crystallite sizes of 14.90 and 24.43 nm for nanoparticles passivated with gelatin and starch, respectively. Recently, a major interest in searching for phytochemicals with nutritional and pharmaceutical purposes has arisen. In this regard, it is known that polyphenols present antioxidant properties as well as an inhibitory effect against some kinds of microorganisms. The aim of this study was to obtain aqueous-ethanolic extracts from peels of avocado, cocoa bean, coconut and cactus pear by ultrasound-assisted extraction. The extracts were characterized in terms of phenolics (Folin-Ciocalteu reagent), antioxidant potential (ferric reducing/antioxidant power assay), radical-scavenging ability (2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free radical assay), and antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella dysenteriae and Candida albicans (disk diffusion test). The results revealed that the avocado peel extract had the highest phenol content (36.5 mg EAG g-1 dry weight), the highest antioxidant activity (141.2 mME Trolox g-1 dry weight) and the lowest IC50 value (59 ppm). The diverse applications of nanomaterials, and their rapidly increasing demand, have spurred the development of novel multifunctional materials. As such, this study aimed to synthesize and characterize a magneto-luminescent nanocomposite, composed of magnetite and fluorescent quantum dots (NaGdF 4 :Nd 3+ @Fe 3 O 4 ). Nanomaterial synthesis was accomplished through solvothermal and co-precipitation methods. Stable nanoparticles (NPs) with a zeta potential of -19.57 ± 0.42 mV, and a size of 4.55 ± 1.44 nm were obtained. The crystalline structure of the NPs, verified via x-ray diffraction, affirmed the hexagonal pattern of the NaGdF 4 :Nd 3+ NPs and the inverse spinel pattern of Fe 3 O 4 NPs. In the diffraction pattern of the NaGdF 4 :Nd 3+ @Fe 3 O 4 NPs, only the phase pertaining to the Fe 3 O 4 NPs was identified, indicating their influence on the nanocomposite. Magnetic measurements revealed the superparamagnetic behavior of the material. Photoluminescence spectra of NaGdF 4 :Nd 3+ and NaGdF 4 :Nd 3+ @Fe 3 O 4 NPs verified the luminescent emission around 1060 nm; a feature of the radiative transitions of Nd 3+ ions.
