The objective was to identify the optimal stage of production to evaluate the resistance of Pelibuey ewes against gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN). Faecal egg count (FEC) was used to classify the ewes as resistant, sensible or intermediate against GIN. Forty-seven ewes were mating during 30 d. The gestation was verified by ultrasonography, and the breeding date was used to calculate the productive stages. Faeces were taken weekly to determine the FEC. Blood samples were taken to determine the packed cell volume (PCV), the peripheral eosinophils count (PEC), plasma protein concentration (PP), and Immunoglobulin A (IgA) against Haemonchus contortus. The body condition score (BCS) was recorded at each visit. Six moments during the study (early, mid and late gestation; early, mid and late lactation) were considered. In this study, we report a list of H. contortus somatic proteins and made a comparative analysis of somatic proteins of L3 and adult worms. L3 and adult parasites were subjected to protein extraction and subsequently to peptide fractionation. Peptides were analysed by mass spectrometry and LC-MS/MS data analysis. Data analysis and search on SEQUEST and MASCOT against H. contortus from the WormBase ParaSite database resulted in the identification of 775 unique peptide sequences corresponding to 227 proteins at 1 % FDR. From these, 18 proteins were specific to L3 and 63 to adult parasites. The gene ontology (GO) enrichment analysis of the proteins specific to L3 and adult worms to gain insight into cellular components, molecular functions and biological processes that affect the parasite-host interaction showed some differences between the two parasite stages. The list of proteins found provides a database to identify target proteins that could be useful as biomarkers of the infection or in the generation of anthelmintic drugs that inhibit proteins essential for the establishment of the infection and the survival of adult parasites. They can also serve as new candidates for vaccine research.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between body mass index corrected (BMIc) for empty body weight and chemical components in hair sheep lambs. Thirty-eight weaned Pelibuey lambs (21 males and 17 females, with an average weight of 10.64 ± 2.46 kg) were used. The carcass was dissected into muscle and fat and ground together. The viscera and blood were mixed, ground, and one sample was collected from each animal. Crude protein and fat were determined in carcass and viscera samples. Correlation and regression were used to estimate the relationships between body composition and BMI. The correlation between BMIc and carcass crude protein (CCP) and visceral crude protein (VCP) was 0.80 and 0.50, respectively (P < 0.0001). BMIc showed a correlation of 0.71 and 0.70 with carcass fat (CF) and visceral fat (VF), respectively (P < 0.0001). The R2 values ranged from 0.52 to 0.97 for equations involving BMIc and body chemical composition. For carcass chemical components, CCP, CF and CE (carcass energy) with BMIc and R2 ranged from 0.64 (RSD: 0.10 kg) for CCP, 0.53 (RSD: 0.16 kg) for CF to 0.62 (RSD: 7.98) for CE. Visceral composition and BMIc had R2 values ranging from 0.96 for VCP (RSD: 0.05 kg), 0.52 for VF (RSD: 0.09 kg) to 0.55 (RSD: 4.34 kg) for VE (visceral energy). Raised pens (RP) have been promoted in the tropical regions of Mexico as a housing system to improves the productivity of growing male and female lambs. They showed high acceptance among farmers, however, there is a lack of studies about the RP system and the use of environmental enrichment in the system. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the productive performance of growing lambs (male and female) housed on RP or ground level (GL) using shaving woods as bedding material. Thirty-two lambs (15 males and 17 females) were used, with an average initial live weight and age of 10.54 ± 1.89 kg and 66.54 ± 22.43 days, respectively. Data were analysed by Variance Analysis considering main factors: housing system (RP and GL) and sex (male and female), and dependant variables: daily weight gain (DWG), feed intake (DMI), feed conversion (FC) and final body weight (FBW). The housing system did not affect DWG, DMI, FC and FBW (P > 0.05). Males presented higher values in all productive indicators than females (except FC). The study evaluated the post-weaning growth of pure and crossbred hair lambs under the tropical conditions of the southeast of México. Data from 323 male lambs of six distinct breed groups (Dorper, Katahdin, Pelibuey, Dorper × Katahdin, Dorper × Pelibuey and Katahdin × Pelibuey) were analyzed. The dataset considered the post-weaning average daily weight gain (ADG) and final body weight adjusted to 60 (P60) and 90 (P90) days of fattening. The statistical model included the fixed effects of breed group and two seasons of the year (Dry: January-May and Rainy: June-September). The initial body weight was included as co-variable. Breed group was a significant source of variation for all the traits (P=0.01), but the season of the year had no effect on any variable evaluated (P>0.05). Dorper × Katahdin crossbred lambs had a better post-weaning growth than the other breed group. Under the conditions of this study, genetic factors had a greater influence on the post-weaning growth of hair lambs than the non-genetic factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several infectious agents may be distributed within a healthy population of cats where diverse risk factors predispose them to come into contact with pathogens. Blood samples from 227 owned cats in Merida, Mexico, were collected with the objective of determining the seroprevalence and associated risk factors of feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and Dirofilaria immitis antigen, and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) antibody. Serological detection of FeLV and D immitis antigens, and FIV antibodies was performed using the commercial kit SNAP Feline Triple Test. The prevalence was found to be 7.5% for FeLV, 2.5% for FIV and 0% for D immitis. Adult cats were at a higher risk of coming into contact with FeLV (P <0.01) than younger cats. Owing to its low prevalence, a risk factor analysis was not performed for FIV. The prevalence of retroviral infections found in this study was low, but within the limits reported in the different geographical areas of the world. Cases of filariosis in the domestic cats of Merida, Mexico, may be absent or very low; however, the low sample size may have influenced these results. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

We evaluated the effect of feeding dietary tannins from Lysiloma latisiliquum fresh forage on the saliva tannin-binding capacity of hair sheep lambs without previous exposure to tannin-rich (TR) fodder. Twenty-four hair sheep lambs (13.6±3.04 kg LW) were fed a tannin-free diet at the beginning of the experimental period (from day 10 to 13). On day 14, lambs were distributed into three groups (n=8): control group (CG), fed with the tannin-free diet (from D10 to D112); tannin short-term group (TST), fed the basal diet and 650 g of L. latisiliquum forage (from D14 to D55); tannin long-term group (TLT), fed the basal diet and 650 g of L. latisiliquum forage (from D14 to D112). Saliva samples were collected from the mouth of each lamb in the morning before feeding time on D10 and D14 (baseline period), on D49 and D56 (period 1) and on D97 and D112 (period 2). The tannin binding response of salivary protein (∆% turbidity) was determined with the haze development test (HDT) using either tannic acid or L. latisiliquum forage acetone extract. A turbidity protein index (TPI) was calculated as (∆% turbidity/[salivary protein (mg)]). Differences in HDT and TPI in the different groups were compared by repeated measures ANOVA using Proc Mixed. All groups had similar ∆% turbidity throughout the experiment (P>0.05). At baseline and period 1, the TPI of the different groups was similar (P>0.05). On period 2 the TLT group showed higher TPI compared with CG (P<0.05). Meanwhile, CG and TST showed similar salivary TPI. The saliva of hair sheep lambs consuming TR L. latisiliquum fresh fodder (TLT group) increased their TPI compared with control lambs not exposed to tannins. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with Toxoplasma gondii infection in domestic cats using an indirect-ELISA (IgM and IgG) and PCR. Samples collected from 220 cats from Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, were analyzed. Cases were reported as acute or chronic. Cases when positive to IgM and IgG and PCR were considered as reactivated chronic infection. Risk factors (sex, age, body condition, diet access to hunting, and number of cats in home) were assessed with a multivariate analysis, 75.5% (166/220) of the cats were IgM and 91.8% (202/220) IgG-seropositive and 79% were PCR positive (173/220). Number of cats per household and low body condition score were associated with reactivated chronic infection (P < 0.05). It is concluded that T. gondii is scattered in the studied population with several periods of reinfection, and therefore an environmental contamination with infecting oocysts exists and there are intrinsic associated factors in cats that increase the risk of becoming infected. The present review documents the results of studies evaluating the acaricidal activity of different plant products and secondary metabolites against ticks that are resistant and susceptible to conventional acaricides. Studies published from 1998 to 2016 were included. The acaricidal activity of plant extracts, essential oils and secondary compounds from plants have been evaluated using bioassays with ticks in the larval and adult stages. There is variable effectiveness according to the species of plant and the concentrations used, with observed mortalities ranging from 5 to 100% against the Rhipicephalus (Boophilus), Amblyomma, Dermacentor, Hyalomma, and Argas genera. A number of plants have been reported to cause high mortalities and/or affect the reproductive capacity of ticks in the adult phase. In the majority of these trials, the main species of plants evaluated correspond to the families Lamiaceae, Fabaceae, Asteraceae, Piperaceae, Verbenaceae, and Poaceae. Different secondary metabolites such as thymol, carvacrol, 1,8-cineol and n-hexanal, have been found to be primarily responsible for the acaricidal activity of different essential oils against different species of ticks, while nicotine, dibenzyldisulfide and dibenzyltrisulfide have been evaluated for plant extracts. Only thymol, carvacrol and 1,8-cineol have been evaluated for acaricidal activity under in vivo conditions. The information in the present review allows the conclusion that the secondary metabolites contained in plant products could be used as an alternative for the control of ticks that are susceptible or resistant to commercial acaricides., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Sheep have been suggested to use their senses to perceive plant properties and associate their intake with consequences after ingestion. However, sheep with browsing experience do not seem to select against tannin-rich browsing materials in cafeteria trials. Thus, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between the chemical composition, selectivity index (SI), preference and intake rate (IR) of tannin-containing forage trees offered to sheep in cafeteria experiments. Four trees were selected for their condensed tannin content and their varying biological activities. Havardia albicans (high biological activity), Leucaena leucocephala (medium biological activity), Acacia gaumeri (low biological activity) and Brosimum alicastrum (very low biological activity) were used in this study. Ten hair sheep (23.7kg±1.43LW) with eight months of browsing experience in native vegetation were used in this study. Polyethylene glycol (PEG 3600MW) was administered to five sheep during all experiments. In experiment 1, fresh foliage from all trees was offered ad libitum for 4h. In experiment 2, B. alicastrum was withdrawn and the preference was determined again. The forage preference in experiment 1 was A. gaumeri (14.77gDM/kgLW)>B. alicastrum (11.77gDM/kgLW)>H. albicans (3.71gDM/kgLW)=L. leucocephala (1.87gDM/kgLW) (P<0.05). The preference in experiment 2 was A. gaumeri>H. albicans=L. leucocephala. PEG administration had no effect on the preference or IR. The intake rate seemed to have been affected by the plant density. Moreover, fiber compounds were found to be better predictors of DM intake than polyphenolic compounds at levels typically found in the evaluated forages. It was concluded that tannins and PEG did not modify the preferences of sheep in cafeteria trials. This study aimed at (i) describing the effects of acetone-water extracts obtained from a range of different plant materials, on the hatching process of Haemonchus contortus eggs under in vitro conditions and (ii) identifying the role of tannins and other plant secondary compounds (PSC), on these AH effects by using polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVPP), an inhibitor of tannins and other polyphenols. An egg hatch assay (EHA) was used to determine the AH effect. Acetone-water (70:30) extracts from different foliages (Lysiloma latisiliquum, Laguncularia racemosa, Rizophora mangle, Avicennia germinans) and plant by-products (Theobroma cacao seed husk and pulp, and percolated Coffea arabica) were obtained. Fresh H. contortus eggs were incubated in PBS with increasing concentrations of each extract (0, 600, 1200, 2400 and 3600 μg/ml PBS). A general linear model was used to determine the dose effect of each extract. A mild ovicidal activity was only recorded for T. cacao extracts (seed husk and pulp). The main anthelmintic (AH) effect for all the extracts, except for C. arabica, was to block the eclosion of larvated eggs. The use of PVPP at 3600 μg/ml PBS showed that tannins of the L. racemosa extract were responsible for blocking eclosion of larvated eggs. Extracts of L. latisiliquum, A. germinans, T. cacao seed husk and pulp also blocked eclosion of larvated eggs but the addition of PVPP indicated that tannins were not responsible for that activity. In contrast, it suggested unfavorable interactions between polyphenols and other PSC contained in those extracts, limiting the AH effect on the egg hatching process. The present paper reviews the frequency of anthelmintic resistance in sheep farms in different countries of the American continent and describes some aspects that might influence the trend in sheep farms. The situation of anthelmintic resistance in sheep farms has been explored mainly in south of the continent (Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay) where sheep farming is an important industry. In those three countries, as well as in Paraguay, the first comprehensive surveys of anthelmintic resistance were performed among countries in the continent, which showed evidence of high frequency of sheep farms with anthelmintic resistance. Today, it is common to find sheep flocks with multiple-resistant worms. In North and Central America, a similar situation has been reported in sheep farms in the south of the United States of America, parts of Mexico and Costa Rica. On the other hand, other areas of the continent show low frequency of farms with anthelmintic resistance. From many areas no results have been published regarding situation on anthelmintic resistance or, alternatively, published results have received limited dissemination. Although the diagnosis of anthelmintic resistance is important for decision making of helminth management/control at the farm level, this is still an aspiration rather than a reality. For decades, researchers working on anthelmintic resistance in the American continent have expressed the need to change farmers' attitudes towards anthelmintic drugs. A common advice has been to check the anthelmintic drug efficacy regularly and reduce the dependence on these with alternative control measures. In spite of such advice, the challenge to stop/delay the advancement of anthelmintic resistance against the available anthelmintic drugs is still present. The evidence suggests that anthelmintic resistance is a growing phenomenon in the American continent. The situation described might be the tip of the iceberg, as anthelmintic resistance is still largely under-diagnosed. Hence, a different approach to tackle the advancement of anthelmintic resistance in sheep farms must be found. Awareness of farmers on the importance of diagnosis of anthelmintic resistance is not enough. Technical support schemes that provide the diagnostic service cheaply and timely must be implemented together with the research aiming at the adoption of control methods to reduce the dependence on conventional anthelmintic drugs. The objective was to determine the prevalence of semi-intensive Bos indicus and Bos indicus × Bos taurus cattle herds with ivermectin (IVM) resistant nematodes in a sub-humid tropical zone of Mexico using the faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT). Thirty-three herds (28 beef and 5 dual purpose herds) were monitored in a period of 6 months (September 2008 to February, 2009). Only 14 of the 33 herds were included in the trial. The other herds had not enough animals with sufficient nematode eggs per gram of faeces (EPG) to be included in a FECRT. Some farms were visited twice trying to find more animals with egg counts higher than 150 EPG. In the 14 surveyed herds the calves were randomly distributed into two groups: (a) treatment group received 0.2mg of IVM/kg BW sc on day 0, and (b) control group without treatment. Faecal samples were obtained from each animal on days 0 and 14 post-treatment. Reduction percentages (% R) and 95% CI were calculated. The prevalence of cattle herds with IVM resistant nematodes was 78.6%. Those suspected of IVM resistance were 21.4%. All surveyed herds used IVM from two to three times a year (mainly beginning and end of the wet season) during 1-11 consecutive years. The farm with stronger resistance used IVM for 11 consecutive years (% R=0%; 95% CI=0-47%). Genera of nematodes resistant to IVM were: Ostertagia, Haemonchus, Cooperia and Trichostrongylus. This trial evaluated the effect of maize supplementation on the ingestive behavior, nutrient intake and the resilience against gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infection of hair sheep in a silvopastoral system containing tropical grasses and legume trees. In addition, it attempted to determine the metabolic cost of the natural GIN infection in supplemented and non-supplemented animals. Twenty-nine 3-month-old lambs (male and female), raised nematode free, were allocated to four groups: I-NS (infected, not supplemented, n = 8), I-S (infected, supplemented with maize at 1.5% live weight (LW), n = 7), T-NS (treated with moxidectin 0.2 mg/kg LW every 28 days, and not supplemented, n = 7) and T-S (treated with moxidectin and supplemented with maize at 1.5% LW, n = 7). During the 70-day trial, fodder intake, fodder selection, LW change (LWC), red blood cell counts (RBC), hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Ht) and eggs per gram of feces (EPG) were measured every 14 days. Supplement consumption was recorded daily. Metabolizable energy (ME) and protein (MP) consumption from the feeds were estimated. Maize supplementation helped to improve the resilience of hair sheep lambs against GIN infections. The I-S and T-NS groups showed similar LWC, RBC, Hb and Ht (P > 0.05) and both were higher than those in the I-NS group (P < 0.05). No difference was found in EPG between the I-NS and the I-S groups (P > 0.05). No effect of sex was observed in the different variables. Although all groups showed low dry matter intake (DMI) (< 2% LW), supplemented groups (T-S and I-S) showed higher total DMI (fodder + maize; P < 0.05), hence higher ME and MP intakes than the non-supplemented groups (T-NS and I-NS). All groups showed similar fodder selection patterns. The estimated metabolic cost of parasitism was ME = 0.70 MJ/day and MP = 9.2 g/day in the I-S animals. Meanwhile, the cost in the I-NS animals was ME = 1.46 MJ/day and MP = 12.71 g/day. Maize supplementation was an economically viable strategy to control GIN compared with no intervention.

The aim was to determine the persistent efficacy of copper oxide wire particles (COWP) against Haemonchus contortus in sheep, using the harmonization guidelines protocol. Thirty-six male lambs (2 months old) reared free of gastrointestinal nematodes were used (average body weight of 10.8±3.8kg). Before and for the duration of the study, lambs were kept in raised cages with slatted floors and were offered ad libitum a complete mixed diet. Animals were divided into six groups (n=6): one non-treated control group (G0) and five groups treated with one COWP capsule (1.7g of copper oxide; Copinox(®)). Animals in each group were treated on pre-defined dates before the artificial infection was applied: days -35 (G1), -28 (G2), -21 (G3), -14 (G4) and -7 (G5). On day 0 animals were infected with 3700 H. contortus infective larvae per animal. Animals were humanely slaughtered between days 22 and 23 post-infection. The abomasums were individually washed to obtain the contents. These organs were subjected to separate artificial digestions. Adult parasites were counted from the abomasum contents and the larvae from the digested material. Worm burden geometric means were calculated for each group. A significant worm burden reduction in either of the treated groups (G1, G2, G3, G4, and G5) compared to the control (G0) was considered as persistence of the anthelmintic effect. Copper levels were determined from individual liver samples of each animal. The geometric mean worm burden of the control group (G0) was 1959. Compared to the control, worm burdens geometric means were significantly reduced in groups G1 (1108), G4 (528) and G5 (1063) (P<0.03). Efficacies in G1, G4 and G5 were 43.4%, 73.0% and 45.7% respectively. No significant reduction was found for G2 (1342) and G3 (1430). A larger quantity of Cu was found in the livers of treated animals compared to the control group (P<0.05) except for G3 (P=0.06). A negative association between Cu liver content and worm burdens was found (r=-0.42, P<0.05). The consumption of tannin-rich (TR) forages has been associated with negative effects against gastrointestinal nematodes and with an improved host resilience. It has been hypothesized that tannins affect the capacity of infective larvae to establish in the mucosae of the host. In this study, we aimed at testing this hypothesis using Lysiloma latisiliquum, a tropical TR tree. The objectives were: (i) to evaluate the effect of the consumption of L. latisiliquum on the establishment of nematode third-stage larvae (L3) in goats; (ii) to define the role of tannins in these effects in vivo by using an inhibitor (polyethylene glycol, PEG); and (iii) to examine a possible indirect effect of tannins on the inflammatory response in the digestive mucosa. Eighteen Criollo goats composed three experimental groups. The control group received fresh leaves of Brosimum alicastrum, a plant with a low level of tannins. Two groups received L. latisiliquum leaves either with (L.L.+PEG) or without (L.L.) daily addition of 25 g PEG. After a 7-day adaptation period, each goat was infected with both Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis (3000 L3 per species). The goats were slaughtered 5 days after infection and worm counts and histological analyses were performed. No difference in the voluntary feed intake of foliage was observed between the 3 groups. The consumption of L. latisiliquum significantly reduced the larval establishment of both nematode species compared to the control (P<0.01). For both worm species, the effects were totally alleviated with PEG (L.L.+PEG group), suggesting a major role of tannins in the observed effects. Only minor differences in the mucosal cellular response were observed between the 3 groups. These results confirm that the consumption of TR plants reduces the establishment of nematode larvae in the host and that a direct effect is principally involved.

As for some temperate forage, some tropical tanniniferous plants (TTP) from browsing might represent an alternative to chemical anthelmintic. The anthelmintic effect of four TTP (Acacia pennatula, Lysiloma latisiliquum, Piscidia piscipula, Leucaena leucocephala) on Haemonchus contortus was measured using two in vitro assays. First, the effects of increasing concentrations of lyophilized extracts (150, 300, 600, 1200 microg/ml PBS) were tested on H. contortus larvae (L(3)) using the larval migration inhibition (LMI) test. An inhibitor of tannin, polyvinyl polypyrrolidone (PVPP), was used to verify whether tannins were responsible for the AH effect. Secondly, the effects of extracts on larval exsheathment were examined. Larvae (L(3)) were in contact with extracts (1200 microg/ml) for 3h, and then were exposed to an artificial exsheathment procedure with observations of the process at 10 min intervals. A general lineal model (GLM) test was used to determine the dose effect in the LMI test and the difference of the percentage of exsheathed larvae between the control and the treatment groups. A Kruskal Wallis test was used to determine the effect of PVPP on LMI results. The LMI test showed a dose-dependent anthelmintic effect for A. pennatula, L. latisiliquum and L. leucocephala (P<0.01), which disappeared after PVPP addition, confirming the role of tannins. No effect was found for P. piscipula on H. contortus in the LMI test. However, all four plant extracts interfered with the process of L(3) exsheathment which might be involved as a mechanism of action of tannins on H. contortus larvae. A. pennatula, L. latisiliquum and L. leucocephala could be used as an anthelmintic for the control of H. contortus after confirmation based on in vivo studies.

Previous observations showed that Duddingtonia flagrans chlamydospores were visualized in McMaster chambers containing faeces of treated sheep. This trial explored the McMaster technique as a tool to quantify chlamydospores in sheep faeces. A range of individual chlamydospore doses (from 19.5 x 10(6) to 177.5 x 10(6)) were offered orally to nine lambs for 7 consecutive days. A faecal sample (5 g) was daily obtained from the rectum of each animal (from days 1 to 13) to perform the McMaster technique using a sugar flotation fluid with 1.27 g/mL density. Each chlamydospore counted in the McMaster chamber was considered as 50 chlamydospores per g of faeces (CPG). The results confirmed that the estimated CPG was associated with the daily dose offered to the animals (r(2)=0.90; P<0.001). Furthermore, the total chlamydospore dose received by each animal was strongly associated to the total quantity of CPG obtained from the bulk faeces (TCtot) (r(2)=0.96; P<0.0001). Quantification of CPG can be used as a helpful tool to determine the number of chlamydospores reaching the faeces in orally dosed animals. This could be used to evaluate the efficacy of D. flagrans for the control of gastrointestinal nematode larvae in sheep faeces.

The aim was to assess the benefits obtained from combining supplementary feeding and copper needles (COWP), compared to the use of both approaches independently, for the control of gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections in browsing kids. Forty-four nematode free Criollo kids were exposed to natural parasite infection. The kids were divided into six experimental groups: not treated, supplemented (NT-S), not treated, not supplemented (NT-NS), moxidectin treated, supplemented (M-S), moxidectin treated not supplemented (M-NS), copper treated, supplemented (COWP-S) and copper treated, non-supplemented (COWP-NS). Copper treated groups received Copinox (2 g capsules) on day 0 and on day 60 of the trial. Moxidectin treated groups received Cydectin (0.2 mg/kg of body weight s.c.) every 28 days. Three of the groups received individual supplementation (100 g of feed/day fresh basis; 74% sorghum: 26% soybean meal; NT-S, M-S and COWP-S) and the other three groups were not supplemented (NT-NS, M-NS and COWP-NS). Animals browsed native vegetation (6.5 h/day) during the wet season (154 days). Kids were weighed every 14 days to determine live weight gain (LWG) and blood and faecal samples were obtained to determine packed cell volume (PCV), haemoglobin (Hb), peripheral eosinophil counts (PEC) and faecal egg counts (FEC). At the end of the trial, four kids of each group were euthanatized (six kids in each COWP treated group). Worm burdens, female worm lengths and prolificacy were determined. Liver samples were used to determine copper concentration and were stained with haematoxylin-eosin to determine microscopic lesions. Animals receiving the combination of supplementary feeding and COWP improved their LWG, PCV and Hb to similar levels of animals with suppressive AH treatment. This was not the case when COWP was used without supplementation. Liver copper concentration in COWP treated groups increased significantly especially in the COWP-NS kids but this was not associated with liver lesions or clinical signs. Post-mortem Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis worm counts had a tendency to be reduced in the different groups (66-35% reduction) compared to NT-NS group at the end of the trial (P>0.05). Also, COWP treatment and/or supplementation reduced female worm length of T. colubriformis and prolificacy of H. contortus and T. colubriformis. This study, confirmed the value of nutritional supplementation in the control of GIN in growing kids. The use of COWP in addition to supplementation had a limited contribution on the kids' resilience against GIN. This may be due to the reduced infection of H. contortus during this trial.

This paper focuses on targeted nutritional supplementation as a means to reduce the requirement for chemotherapeutic control of gastrointestinal nematode infection of small ruminants and considers the limitations to practical application. Supplementary feeding, particularly with additional dietary protein, can assist resilience to infection during times when metabolic resources are being directed towards dealing with the pathophysiological effects of infection and away from production of meat, milk and fibre. Substantial experimental evidence from studies of both sheep and goats supports this hypothesis particularly in relation to young lambs and kids after weaning and in ewes around parturition. In addition, nutritional supplementation frequently increases resistance to infection, as indicated by decreased faecal worm egg counts and worm burdens. As a result, supplementation has the potential to reduce the requirement for anthelmintic treatment. Practical application of this knowledge can, however, be quite complex in many small ruminant production systems. In general, strategic supplementation should target those times when nutrient requirements are greatest and provide those nutrients which are deficient whether protein, energy, minerals or trace elements. Complexity arises when we consider that nutrient requirements will differ between localities for different species and breed of host, at different stages of growth and reproduction, with differing seasonal availability of forage, with different species of nematodes and different levels of established infections and exposure to infective stages. As a starting point, the provision of nutrients to optimize rumen function and animal performance in the particular production system should assist in maintaining resilience to nematode infection. Provision of nutrients in excess of this requirement, if economically feasible, may yield further benefits in some situations and reduce the need for alternative control measures for gastrointestinal nematode parasites.

The objective was to determine the effect of supplementary feeding on the resilience and resistance of Criollo kids against natural gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections, when browsing native vegetation during the dry season in tropical Mexico. Thirty-three two-month-old Criollo kids, raised nematode free, were included at weaning in a 20-week trial. The kids were placed into four groups. Two groups of eight kids were offered 100g/day soybean and sorghum meal (26%:74% respectively fresh basis) (treated/supplemented (T-S) and infected/supplemented (I-S)). Two groups remained with no supplement for the duration of the trial (infected/non-supplemented (I-NS) (n=9) and treated/non-supplemented (T-NS) (n=8)). Kids in groups T-S and T-NS were drenched with 0.2mg of moxidectin/kg body weight orally (Cydectin, Fort Dodge) every 28 days. Groups I-S and I-NS were naturally infected with GIN. The animals browsed native vegetation for an average of 7h/day together with a herd of 120 naturally infected adult goats. Cumulative live weight gain (CLWG), packed cell volume (PCV), haemoglobin (Hb), total plasma protein and plasma albumin were recorded every 14 days as measurements of resilience. Resistance parameters (faecal egg counts (FEC) and peripheral eosinophil counts (PEC)) were also measured. Bulk faecal cultures were made for each group every 28 days. Every month a new pair of initially worm-free tracer kids assessed the infectivity of the vegetation browsed by the animals. Tracer kids and faecal cultures showed that kids faced low mixed infections (Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus colubriformis and Oesophagostomum columbianum). Under conditions of scarce vegetation, such as those in the present study, supplemented groups (I-S and T-S) had higher growth rates compared to the non-supplemented groups independently of the control of GIN infection with anthelmintic (AH) treatment (P<0.001). Supplementary feeding did not affect FEC or PEC. In the absence of supplementation, lack of AH treatment may lead to outbreaks of clinical nematodosis. The supplementary feeding was economically feasible.

The objective was to examine the coincidence in the prevalence of benzimidazole (Bz) resistance in smallholder goat herds, as determined by three average-based and two individually-based faecal egg count reduction (FECR) tests. Nineteen smallholder goat herds with more than 30 animals were selected from 84 herds in Yucatan. Animals shedding 150 eggs/g of faeces (EPG) on day zero were randomly divided into two groups. The control group did not receive treatment and the treated group received fenbendazole (10mg/kg body weight per os). Feed was withdrawn for 16 h before treatment. Ten days after treatment, both groups were sampled to determine their FEC. Faecal cultures and identification of infective larvae were performed for estimating the proportions of genera of gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) present. Presence of resistant GIN was determined with three different average-based FECR (FECR(1), FECR(2) and FECR(3)) and two individually-based FECR (iFECR(1) and iFECR(2)). The prevalence of herds with Bz resistant nematodes (and 95% confidence interval (95% CI)) was calculated using each formula. Coincidence among formulae was estimated with Kappa values. The prevalence (+/- 95% CI) of Bz resistance calculated with FECR(1) (57.89 +/- 22.20) had a high coincidence with iFECR(1) and iFECR(2) (Kappa values of 0.86 and 0.79, respectively). The prevalence with FECR(2) (31.58 +/- 20.90) and FECR(3) (21.05 +/- 18.33) had a low coincidence with FECR(1) (Kappa < 0.50). Trichostrongylids found on Bz resistant farms were mainly Haemonchus spp., however, some Trichostrongylus spp. and Oesophagostomum spp. were found too. The high coincidence between the standard average-based FECR(1) and the individually based formulae is encouraging and may suggest that either formula could be applied to smallholder farmers. Further laboratory studies are needed to confirm the resistance status in the herds.

Thirty-eight sheep flocks, located in three municipalities in the Eastern Yucatan, Mexico, were surveyed for gastrointestinal nematodes resistant to benzimidazole (BZD) anthelmintics (AH). On each flock, 30 sheep were randomly distributed into two groups of 15 animals: albendazole group (5mg/kg BW) and untreated control group. Animals were refrained from any food (either browsing/grazing or supplement) for a period of 16 h prior to treatment. Faecal egg counts (FEC) and larval cultures were performed 10 days after anthelmintic treatment. Percentage reduction and 95% confidence intervals were determined. Anthelmintic resistance (AR) was declared when the percentage reduction in FEC was <95% and the 95% confidence interval was <90%. AR was suspected when only one of the two criteria was met. The survey indicated that AR occurred in 15.8% (n=6) (95% confidence interval=+/-11.6%) and was suspected in 23.7% of the farms (n=9) (95% confidence interval=+/-13.3%). Post-treatment larval cultures indicated that Haemonchus was the only resistant genus. The questionnaire survey showed that most farmers (92%) considered their sheep a secondary activity to cattle production. The majority of farmers (97.4%) treat their animals according to visual appreciation of weight. However, most farmers (79%) treat their flocks at very low frequencies (<3 times per year). Drug rotation was performed every 12 months or more by 84.2% of farmers. Anthelmintics used were: macrociclic lactones (47.4%), BZD (39.5%), levamisol (10.5%) and 1 farmer used closantel.
