AbstractThe bioremediation capacity of microalgae found in the wastewater channels in Irrigation District 03 (DR03) in Mexico was studied. The study evaluated the effect of pH, aeration, light intensity, and water source on the productivity, culture time, and composition of the microalgal biomass, predominantly made up of Chlorella vulgaris spp. Parameters such as Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), total solids (TS), and turbidity were monitored to assess the efficiency and bioremediation capacity of the microbial consortium. The yield production of microalgal biomass was measured to evaluate the amount produced per unit volume of treated water. Two culture conditions were assessed: uncontrolled and controlled conditions of aeration and lighting. Under controlled culture conditions, a productivity of 0.031 g L−1 d−1 biomass with 17% lipidic fraction and 37.65% ash content was observed, along with a reduction in COD and turbidity by 57 and 85%, respectively. Four novel magnetic-activated carbons (MACs) were prepared, characterised, and used as adsorbents to remove heavy metal ions from wastewater samples. The MACs prepared, are advanced adsorbents for the removal of Hg(II), Cr(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II). The nature of the acid, amount, composition of the MACs, and the remotion time were evaluated in aqueous solutions. The ions removal percentages obtained, under the best conditions, were 93% for Hg(II) and higher than 99% for Pb(II), Cr(III), and Cd(II) (100 mg L−1, initial concentration in solution), with 100 mg of the MAC-3 in HNO3 3 mM. The capacity of the best adsorbent, MAC-3, for removing heavy metals ions Hg(II), Cr(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II) was studied using Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms under the best condition. The maximum adsorption capacities of Hg(II), Cr(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II) were found to be 10.72, 11.51, 11.49 and 11.49 mg g−1, the values of constants of Freundlich models were 17.98, 26.83, 9.18, and 7.18 mg g−1 respectively. For Hg(II) and Pb(II) the correlation factor (R2) was better for Freundlich model, while Cr(III) and Cd(II) showed better R2 with Langmuir model. Finally, the treatment for the elimination of heavy metal ions was carried out, with wastewater samples of industrial and domestic origin, and used for crop irrigation. Traditionally, edible flowers have been used in alternative medicine by several cultures around the world. Recently, they have gained in popularity as a new trend in worldwide gastronomy because they have been added as ingredients in food and beverages since they have important organoleptic properties and beneficial health effects. In fact, edible flower consumption has increased in the last years, and many works have demonstrated that they are essential sources of macronutrients, vitamins, and antioxidant compounds, which give benefits like prevention against illness associated with oxidative stress, some cardiovascular illness, and cancers, among others. Nowadays, the main studies about edible flowers are focused on their nutritional, functional, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. This review summarizes relevant information about the properties and bioactive compounds content of edible flowers, likewise, the acceptance and security risks of their consumption, highlighting the importance of their incorporation in human nutrition and the main biological activities. According to the revision process, the consumer acceptability of edible flowers and their inclusion in the human diet have been increased due to their positive health effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this work was to prove the microalgae biomass production using cheese whey as a carbon source. Mixotrophic cultivation was implemented with whey from curd production, and it was compared with cultivation using wastewater and foliar fertilizer, in similar conditions. The microalgae consortium was obtained from wastewater, the predominant species are Desmodesmus maximus and Chlorella vulgaris and one cyanobacteria (Planktothrix pseudoagardii), the biomass growth was measured by optical density at 685nm, and the content of oil, protein, humidity, and ash was characterized. It was found that the cultivation with cheese whey had higher cell density and better productivities of protein and oil than the cultivation with other substrates. Moreover, it was determined that the maximum cheese whey concentration, which microalgae can grow into, is 5% v/v. The effluent used comes from a real cheese production process, which shows that effluents from the dairy industry can be an ideal substrate to produce biomass, increasing the value chain of this industry, and minimizing its environmental impact.
