The study of brain gyrification may provide useful information on the cytoarchitecture and connectivity of the brain. One of the methods that have been developed to estimate brain gyrification, known as surface ratio (SR), has not yet been studied in schizophrenia. Here we aimed to assess whether SR could provide new insights on the brain structure of schizophrenia patients and the severity of symptoms. We also computed a more established brain gyrification measure, namely absolute mean curvature (AMC). We analyzed 63 magnetic resonance images, 25 from schizophrenia patients with treatment-resistant auditory verbal hallucinations (SCH-H), 18 from schizophrenia patients without hallucinations (SCH-NH), and 20 from healthy controls (HC). The SR measure revealed that SCH-H patients had a more folded orbitofrontal cortex than SCH-NH patients and HC. Gyrification in this region was also negatively associated with positive symptoms, specifically with the delusions and conceptual disorganization items, only in the SCH-H group. Regarding the AMC measure, we identified two areas where HC showed more gyrification than SCH-H patients, but no relationships arose with symptoms. The hypergyrification of the orbitofrontal cortex displayed by SCH-H patients, as captured by the SR measure, suggests aberrant and/or excessive wiring in these patients, which in turn could give rise to auditory verbal hallucinations. Alternatively, we comment on potential compensatory mechanisms that may better explain the negative association between orbitofrontal gyrification and positive symptomatology. The present study aims to compare the suicide rates in people over 85 years of age in relation to overall suicide rates in different European countries. In addition, the study aims to perform a preliminary analysis of which socioeconomic factors could explain higher suicide rates in this age group in Europe. An analysis of the Eurostat database has been made. In this pilot phase, certain socioeconomic variables representative of people over 85 years of age were chosen based on criteria of suitability, according to the bibliography available for other regions and availability of the information provided. The conditional suicide rate in this age group with respect to the overall suicide rate in each country has been calculated. Furthermore, Spearman correlations between the suicide rates in this age group and the chosen socioeconomic factors were performed. Conditional suicide rates in people over 85 years of age show a marked difference between southern and northern European countries. In the correlational analysis, suicide in this age group was associated with different economic ratios, the old-age dependency ratio, and the self-perceived health ratio. After performing a multivariate regression, the model that best explained the differences between the European countries included the variables "old-age dependency ratio" and "economic impossibility to buy new clothes ratio." Different socioeconomic factors, specifically poverty and economic inequality, added to the old-age dependency ratio, could explain huge differences between the suicide rates in people over 85 years of age in the different European countries.

Auditory hallucinations (AH) are the most frequent positive symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. Hallucinations have been related to emotional processing disturbances, altered functional connectivity and effective connectivity deficits. Previously, we observed that, compared to healthy controls, the limbic network responses of patients with auditory hallucinations differed when the subjects were listening to emotionally charged words. We aimed to compare the synchrony patterns and effective connectivity of task-related networks between schizophrenia patients with and without AH and healthy controls. Schizophrenia patients with AH (n = 27) and without AH (n = 14) were compared with healthy participants (n = 31). We examined functional connectivity by analyzing correlations and cross-correlations among previously detected independent component analysis time courses. Granger causality was used to infer the information flow direction in the brain regions. The results demonstrate that the patterns of cortico-cortical functional synchrony differentiated the patients with AH from the patients without AH and from the healthy participants. Additionally, Granger-causal relationships between the networks clearly differentiated the groups. In the patients with AH, the principal causal source was an occipital-cerebellar component, versus a temporal component in the patients without AH and the healthy controls. These data indicate that an anomalous process of neural connectivity exists when patients with AH process emotional auditory stimuli. Additionally, a central role is suggested for the cerebellum in processing emotional stimuli in patients with persistent AH.

Introduction: During the last decades, numerous research works have tried to determine what risk factors are associated with the schizophrenic patient's suicidal behavior but they have yielded contradictory results. Thus we hypothesized that these results' variability could be due, among other reasons, to the heterogeneity of suicidal schizophrenic population., Material and Method: Thirty-two Schizophrenics patients who had made Attempted suicide were studied. They were assessed through a battery of Clinical scales for negative, positive, hopelessness, insight and depressive symptoms., Results: Two suicidal subtypes were identified according to the reasons that patients stated for attempting suicide. These two subtypes showed significant differences in two of the analyzed variables, namely hopelessness and PANSS positive subscale., Discussion: Clinical implications coming from these results are discussed in the present paper.
