Abstract

Nanomaterials are highly attractive for use in many applications, primarily due to their greater contact surface area and enhanced effects compared to the corresponding bulk materials. However, nanomaterials present risks to human health, since they are able to penetrate deep into the respiratory tract. It is therefore important to know the particle sizes of these substances, although such measurements can present difficulties associated with the generation of this type of material. It is also important to investigate the mechanism of aerosol generation, considering the properties of the starting material. Here, evaluation was performed of the generation of an aerosol of silver nanoparticles from a suspension, using an environmentally friendly and simple synthesis method. A reduction reaction was used to produce the silver nanoparticles. The aerosol was generated using a modified nebulizer inhaler, and particles were counted using an SMPS system. The measurements showed that the predominant particle sizes were 45.63±2.49 nm (determined by SMPS) and 50.7±0.7 nm (determined by DLS analysis).

41. Analysis of Recycled Polystyrene Electrospinning Process: Fiber Diameter, Morphology, and Filtration Applications

Abstract

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) waste poses significant environmental challenges, due to its persistence, necessitating effective recycling solutions. In this study, EPS was transformed into submicrometric fiber membranes by electrospinning, offering a sustainable method for air and water nanoparticle filtration. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to statistically analyze the effects of polymer concentration (5-25wt%), percentage of DL-limonene (10-50%), voltage (15-25kV), and injection flow rate (0.4-1.2mL/h) on fiber characteristics. Fiber diameters ranged from 240 to 1537nm, with DL-limonene, a green co-solvent, reducing the diameter by up to 279nm, while higher polymer concentrations increased the diameter by up to 742nm. Morphological variations included bead-on-string fibers at low polymer concentrations and porous fibers at 20% polymer with 40% DL-limonene, demonstrating the potential for membrane tunability. In air filtration tests, removal efficiencies of 75.15±1.17% were achieved, at a pressure drop below 50Pa and a face velocity of 4.8cm/s, with the fibers with pores enhancing nanoparticle capture by diffusion and interception mechanisms. Water filtration tests using metal oxide nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄, ZnO, TiO₂, and CeO₂) showed retention efficiencies of 84% for Fe₃O₄ and 76% for ZnO, influenced by electrostatic interactions and particle aggregation. Lower efficiencies were observed for TiO₂ and CeO₂, due to weaker interactions and smaller aggregate sizes. Surface charge measurements revealed that the membranes carried negative charges, affecting the filtration mechanisms. The findings highlight how solvent composition and process parameters can be used to tailor fiber properties for specific applications, transforming EPS waste into functional materials for air and water remediation. \

Abstract

International audience; The design of nano-structured heterogeneous catalytic junctions with high interface to volume ratio and discrete surface distribution is critical to promote the photoelectron activity in the catalytic degradation of organic pollutants. In this work, photocatalytic palladium-titanium dioxide nano-junctions were fabricated via Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) of palladium nanoparticles over the surface of titanium dioxide nanotubes. The Pd catalytic interface and resulting active site density was tailored by varying the nanoparticle growth and coalescence via ALD, leading to Pd-TiO2 junctions with distinctive morphological aspects and interface properties. The visible light response of the Pd-TiO2 junctions was attributed to the Surface Plasmon Resonance effect and correlated to the variation of the catalyst morphology tuned by ALD. Uniform, discrete distribution of Pd nanoparticles with diameter lower than 5 nm led to high catalytic interface to deposited volume ratio. The nano-engineered Pd-TiO2 junctions showed enhanced photocatalytic activity towards the degradation of methylene blue selected as a model contaminant and 2,4 D, with a kinetic constant 4.5 higher than as-annealed anatase TiO2 nanotubes. The design of well-defined catalytic junctions obtainable by a scalable, accurate deposition technique such as ALD represents a promising route to develop cutting-edge photoactive devices with high performance and minimum noble-metal loading.
