Barred structures are widespread in a considerable fraction of galactic discs, spanning diverse environments and galaxy luminosities. The environment likely exerts a significant influence on bar formation. It is plausible that the structural parameters of bars resulting from tidal interactions in high-density galactic environments differ from those formed through internal disc instabilities in isolated galaxies. To empirically test this scenario, a viable approach is to compare the structural parameters of bars in galaxies situated within distinct environments. We have collected data on the bar radius and bar strength for a sample of 36 SB0 and SBa galaxies located within the Virgo cluster. Additionally, we analyzed a sample of 46 field galaxies with similar morphologies and luminosity range. The analysis reveals that the bar radius exhibits a correlation with galaxy luminosity, indicating that larger bars are typically found in more luminous galaxies. When comparing galaxies with fixed luminosities, the field galaxies display larger bar radii compared to those in the Virgo cluster. However, when the bar radius is scaled by the size of the galaxy, the disparity diminishes and the scaled bars in the Virgo cluster and the field exhibit similar sizes. This is because galaxies of similar luminosities tend to be larger in the field environment compared to the cluster and because the bars adapt to the discs in which they live. Regarding the bar strength, no significant differences were observed for bright galaxies ($M_{r} < -19.5$) between those located in the Virgo cluster and those in the field. The distribution of moving groups in the solar neighborhood has been used to constrain dynamical properties of the Milky Way for decades. The kinematic bimodality between the main mode (Hyades, Pleiades, Coma Berenices, and Sirius) and Hercules can be explained by two different bar models -- via the outer Lindblad resonance of a bar with a high pattern speed ($\sim$55 km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$), or via the corotation resonance of a bar with a low pattern speed ($\sim$40 km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$). Recent works directly studying the kinematics of bar stars and gas flows near the center of the Galaxy have converged on the low pattern speed model. In this paper, we independently confirm this result by using Gaia DR3 to directly study the variation of Hercules across Galactic azimuth. We find that Hercules increases in $V_\phi$ and becomes stronger as we move towards the minor axis of the bar, and decreases in $V_\phi$ and becomes weaker as we move towards the major axis of the bar. WEAVE, the new wide-field, massively multiplexed spectroscopic survey facility for the William Herschel Telescope, will see first light in late 2022. WEAVE comprises a new 2-degree field-of-view prime-focus corrector system, a nearly 1000-multiplex fibre positioner, 20 individually deployable 'mini' integral field units (IFUs), and a single large IFU. These fibre systems feed a dual-beam spectrograph covering the wavelength range 366$-$959\,nm at $R\sim5000$, or two shorter ranges at $R\sim20\,000$. After summarising the design and implementation of WEAVE and its data systems, we present the organisation, science drivers and design of a five- to seven-year programme of eight individual surveys to: (i) study our Galaxy's origins by completing Gaia's phase-space information, providing metallicities to its limiting magnitude for $\sim$3 million stars and detailed abundances for $\sim1.5$ million brighter field and open-cluster stars; (ii) survey $\sim0.4$ million Galactic-plane OBA stars, young stellar objects and nearby gas to understand the evolution of young stars and their environments; (iii) perform an extensive spectral survey of white dwarfs; (iv) survey $\sim400$ neutral-hydrogen-selected galaxies with the IFUs; (v) study properties and kinematics of stellar populations and ionised gas in $z<0.5$ cluster galaxies; (vi) survey stellar populations and kinematics in $\sim25\,000$ field galaxies at $0.3\lesssim z \lesssim 0.7$; (vii) study the cosmic evolution of accretion and star formation using $>1$ million spectra of LOFAR-selected radio sources; (viii) trace structures using intergalactic/circumgalactic gas at $z>2$. Next-generation wide-field spectroscopic surveys will observe the infall regions around large numbers of galaxy clusters with high sampling rates for the first time. Here we assess the feasibility of extracting the large-scale cosmic web around clusters using forthcoming observations, given realistic observational constraints. We use a sample of 324 hydrodynamic zoom-in simulations of massive galaxy clusters from TheThreeHundred project to create a mock-observational catalogue spanning $5R_{200}$ around 160 analogue clusters. These analogues are matched in mass to the 16 clusters targetted by the forthcoming WEAVE Wide-Field Cluster Survey (WWFCS). We consider the effects of the fibre allocation algorithm on our sampling completeness and find that we successfully allocate targets to 81.7 $\% \pm$ 1.3 of the members in the cluster outskirts. We next test the robustness of the filament extraction algorithm by using a metric, $D_{\text{skel}}$, which quantifies the distance to the filament spine. We find that the median positional offset between reference and recovered filament networks is $D_{\text{skel}} = 0.13 \pm 0.02$ Mpc, much smaller than the typical filament radius of $\sim$ 1 Mpc. Cluster connectivity of the recovered network is not substantially affected. Our findings give confidence that the WWFCS will be able to reliably trace cosmic web filaments in the vicinity around massive clusters, forming the basis of environmental studies into the effects of pre-processing on galaxy evolution., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures. The kinematic plane of stars near the Sun has proven an indispensable tool for untangling the complexities of the structure of our Milky Way (MW). With ever improving data, numerous kinematic "moving groups" of stars have been better characterized and new ones continue to be discovered. Here we present an improved method for detecting these groups using MGwave, a new open-source 2D wavelet transformation code that we have developed. Our code implements similar techniques to previous wavelet software; however, we include a more robust significance methodology and also allow for the investigation of underdensities which can eventually provide further information about the MW's non-axisymmetric features. Applying MGwave to the latest data release from Gaia (DR3), we detect 47 groups of stars with coherent velocities. We reproduce the majority of the previously detected moving groups in addition to identifying three additional significant candidates: one within Arcturus, and two in regions without much substructure at low $V_R$. Finally, we have followed these associations of stars beyond the solar neighborhood, from Galactocentric radius of 6.5 to 10 kpc. Most detected groups are extended throughout radius indicating that they are streams of stars possibly due to non-axisymmetric features of the MW., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. We computed the luminosity of simulated galaxies of the C-EAGLE project, a suite of 30 high-resolution zoom-in simulations of galaxy clusters based on the EAGLE simulation. The AB magnitudes are derived for different spectral bands, from ultraviolet to infrared, using the simple stellar population modeling based on the E-MILES stellar spectra library. We take into account obscuration due to dust in star forming regions and diffuse interstellar medium. The $g-r$ colour-stellar mass diagram, at z=0.1, presents a defined red sequence, reaching $g-r \simeq 0.8$, 0.05 dex redder than EAGLE at high masses, and a well populated blue cloud, when field galaxies are included. The clusters' inner regions are dominated by red-sequence galaxies at all masses, although a non-negligible amount of blue galaxies are still present. We adopt Bayesian inference to compute the clusters LFs, testing for statistical significance of both single and double Schechter functions. The multicolour LFs at z=0 show a knee luminosity that peaks in the infrared and increases with the cluster's mass. The faint-end is weakly dependent on colour and mass and shows an upturn in the optical, bounded between -1.25 and -1.39, just moderately steeper than the field. The simulations reproduce, within the observational errors, the spectroscopic LFs of the Hercules and Abell 85 clusters, including their faint end upturn. C-EAGLE LFs are in broad agreement with observed LFs taken from SDSS and XXL surveys, up to z=0.67, showing a rather flat faint end when the observational constrains are taken into account., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, 7 tables. We analyse a sample of twelve galaxy clusters, from the Kapteyn IAC WEAVE INT Cluster Survey (KIWICS) looking for dwarf galaxy candidates. By using photometric data in the $r$ and $g$ bands from the Wide Field Camera (WFC) at the 2.5-m Isaac Newton telescope (INT), we select a sample of bright dwarf galaxies (M$_r$ $\leq$ -15.5 mag) in each cluster and analyse their spatial distribution, stellar colour, and as well as their S\'ersic index and effective radius. We quantify the dwarf fraction inside the $R_{200}$ radius of each cluster, which ranges from $\sim$ 0.7 to $\sim$ 0.9. Additionally, when comparing the fraction in the inner region with the outermost region of the clusters, we find that the fraction of dwarfs tends to increase going to the outer regions. We also study the clustercentric distance distribution of dwarf and giant galaxies (M$_r$ $<$ -19.0 mag), and in half of the clusters of our sample, the dwarfs are distributed in a statistically different way as the giants, with the giant galaxies being closer to the cluster centre. We analyse the stellar colour of the dwarf candidates and quantify the fraction of blue dwarfs inside the $R_{200}$ radius, which is found to be less than $\sim$ 0.4, but increases with distance from the cluster centre. Regarding the structural parameters, the S\'ersic index for the dwarfs we visually classify as early type dwarfs tends to be higher in the inner region of the cluster. We aim to study how the orbits of galaxies in clusters depend on the prominence of the corresponding central galaxies. We divided our data set of $\sim$ 100 clusters and groups into four samples based on their magnitude gap between the two brightest members, $\Delta m_{12}$. We then stacked all the systems in each sample, in order to create four stacked clusters, and derive the mass and velocity anisotropy profiles for the four groups of clusters using the MAMPOSSt procedure. Once the mass profile is known, we also obtain the (non parametric) velocity anisotropy profile via the inversion of the Jeans equation. In systems with the largest $\Delta m_{12}$, galaxy orbits are prevalently radial, except near the centre, where orbits are isotropic (or tangential when also the central galaxies are considered in the analysis). In the other three samples with smaller $\Delta m_{12}$, galaxy orbits are isotropic or only mildly radial. Our study supports the results of numerical simulations that identify radial orbits of galaxies as the cause of an increasing $\Delta m_{12}$ in groups., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, and 6 tables. We review the formation and evolution of fossil groups and clusters from both the theoretical and the observational points of view. In the optical band, these systems are dominated by the light of the central galaxy. They were interpreted as old systems that had enough time to merge all the M* galaxies within the central one. During the last two decades many observational studies were performed to prove the old and relaxed state of fossil systems. The majority of these studies, that spans a wide range of topics including halos global scaling relations, dynamical substructures, stellar populations, and galaxy luminosity functions, seem to challenge this scenario. The general picture that can be obtained by reviewing all the observational works is that the fossil state could be transitional. Indeed, the formation of the large magnitude gap observed in fossil systems could be related to internal processes rather than an old formation., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures, 1 table. WEAVE is the new wide-field spectroscopy facility for the prime focus of the William Herschel Telescope at La Palma, Spain. Its fibre positioner is essential for the accurate placement of the spectrograph's 960 fibre multiplex. We provide an overview of the final assembly and metrology of the fibre positioner, and results of lab commissioning of its robot gantries. A completely new z-gantry for each positioner robot was acquired, with measurements showing a marked improvement in positioning repeatability. We also present the first results of the configuration software testing, and discuss the metrology procedures that must be repeated after the positioner's arrival at the observatory.

We investigate the relations between the properties of bars and their host galaxies in a sample of 77 nearby barred galaxies, spanning a wide range of morphological types and luminosities, with 34 SB0-SBa and 43 SBab-SBc galaxies. The sample includes all the galaxies with reliable direct measurement of their bar pattern speed based on long-slit or integral-field stellar spectroscopy using the Tremaine-Weinberg method. We limited our analysis to the galaxies with a relatively small relative error on the bar pattern speed (smaller than 50 per cent) and not hosting an ultrafast bar. For each galaxy, we collected the radius, strength, pattern speed, corotation radius, and rotation rate for the bar and we also collected the Hubble type and absolute SDSS r-band magnitude. We also used literature bulge-to-total luminosity ratio for a subsample of 53 galaxies with an available photometric decomposition. We confirmed earlier observational findings that longer bars rotate with lower bar pattern speeds, shorter bars are weaker, and bars with a small bar rotation rate rotate with higher bar pattern speeds and have smaller corotation radii. In addition, we found that stronger bars rotate with lower bar pattern speeds, as predicted from the interchange of angular momentum during bar evolution, which in turn may depend on different galaxy properties. Moreover, we report that brighter galaxies host longer bars, which rotate with lower bar pattern speeds and have larger corotation radii. This result is in agreement with a scenario of downsizing in bar formation, if more massive galaxies formed earlier and had sufficient time to slow down, grow in length, and push corotation outwards., Comment: revised and accepted for pubblication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The {\Lambda} cold dark matter ({\Lambda}CDM) paradigm of galaxy formation predicts that dense spheroidal stellar structures invariably grow at early cosmic time. These primordial spheroids evolve toward a virialized dynamical status as they finally become today's elliptical galaxies and large bulges at the center of disk galaxies. However, observations reveal that small bulges in spiral galaxies are common in the nearby universe. The prevailing belief that all small bulges form at later times from internal processes occurring in the disk represents a challenge for the {\Lambda}CDM scenario. Notably, the coevolution of bulges and central supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at early phases of galaxy evolution is also at stake. However, observations have so far not provided conclusive evidence against their possible early origin. Here, we report new observations of small bulges showing that they follow the mass-velocity dispersion relation expected for virialized systems. Contrary to previous claims, small bulges bridge the gap between massive ellipticals and globular clusters. This dynamical picture supports a scenario where systems over seven orders of magnitude in stellar mass form at early cosmic time. These results alleviate the tension between {\Lambda}CDM simulations and observations at galactic scales. We hypothesize that these small bulges are actually the low-mass descendants of compact objects observed at high redshift, also known as red nuggets, which are consistently produced in cosmological {\Lambda}CDM simulations. About 20% of stars in the solar vicinity are in the Hercules stream, a bundle of stars that move together with a velocity distinct from the Sun. Its origin is still uncertain. Here, we explore the possibility that Hercules is made of trojans, stars captured at L4, one the Lagrangian points of the stellar bar. Using GALAKOS--a high-resolution N-body simulation of the Galactic disk--we follow the motions of stars in the co-rotating frame of the bar and confirm previous studies on Hercules being formed by stars in co-rotation resonance with the bar. Unlike previous work, we demonstrate that the retrograde nature of trojan orbits causes the asymmetry in the radial velocity distribution, typical of Hercules in the solar vicinity. We show that trojans remain at capture for only a finite amount of time, before escaping L4 without being captured again. We anticipate that in the kinematic plane the Hercules stream will de-populate along the bar major axis and be visible at azimuthal angles behind the solar vicinity with a peak towards L4. We present new evidence for eight early-type galaxies (ETGs) from the CALIFA Survey that show clear rotation around their major photometric axis ("prolate rotation"). These are LSBCF560-04, NGC 0647, NGC 0810, NGC 2484, NGC 4874, NGC 5216, NGC 6173 and NGC 6338. Including NGC 5485, a known case of an ETG with stellar prolate rotation, as well as UGC 10695, a further possible candidate for prolate rotation, we report ten CALIFA galaxies in total that show evidence for such a feature in their stellar kinematics. Prolate rotators correspond to ~9% of the volume-corrected sample of CALIFA ETGs, a fraction much higher than previously reported. We find that prolate rotation is more common among the most massive ETGs. We investigate the implications of these findings by studying N-body merger simulations, and show that a prolate ETG with rotation around its major axis could be the result of a major polar merger, with the amplitude of prolate rotation depending on the initial bulge-to-total stellar mass ratio of its progenitor galaxies. Additionally, we find that prolate ETGs resulting from this formation scenario show a correlation between their stellar line-of-sight velocity and higher order moment h_3, opposite to typical oblate ETGs, as well as a double peak of their stellar velocity dispersion along their minor axis. Finally, we investigate the origin of prolate rotation in polar galaxy merger remnants. Our findings suggest that prolate rotation in massive ETGs might be more common than previously expected, and can help towards a better understanding of their dynamical structure and formation origin., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

For several decades it has been known that stellar bars in disc galaxies can be triggered by interactions, or by internal processes such as dynamical instabilities. In this work, we explore the differences between these two mechanisms using numerical simulations. We perform two groups of simulations based on isolated galaxies, one group in which a bar develops naturally, and another group in which the bar could not develop in isolation. The rest of the simulations recreate 1:1 coplanar fly-by interactions computed with the impulse approximation. The orbits we use for the interactions represent the fly-bys in groups or clusters of different masses accordingly to the velocity of the encounter. In the analysis we focus on bars' amplitude, size, pattern speed and their rotation parameter, ${\cal R}=R_{CR}/R_{bar}$. The latter is used to define fast (${\cal R}<1.4$) and slow rotation (${\cal R}>1.4$). Compared with equivalent isolated galaxies we find that bars affected or triggered by interactions: (i) remain in the slow regime for longer; (ii) are more boxy in face-on views; (iii) they host kinematically hotter discs. Within this set of simulations we do not see strong differences between retrograde or prograde fly-bys. We also show that slow interactions can trigger bar formation., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. The surface brightness distribution of $\sim$30-40$\%$ of the early-type dwarf galaxies with $-18 \leq M_{B} \leq -15$ in the Virgo and the Coma clusters is fitted by models that include two structural components (S\`ersic + exponential) as for bright disc galaxies.The goal of the present study is to determine whether early-type dwarf galaxies with a two-component stellar structure in the Virgo and the Coma clusters are low-luminosity copies of bright disc galaxies or are the remnants of bright galaxies strongly transformed by cluster environmental effects.I analysed the location of bright disc galaxies and early-type dwarfs in the $r_{b,e}/h$- $n$ plane. The location in this plane of the two-component dwarf galaxies was compared with the remnants of tidally disrupted disc galaxies reported by numerical simulations. Bright unbarred disc galaxies show a strong correlation in the $r_{b,e}/h$-$n$ plane. Galaxies with larger S\`ersic shape parameters show a higher $r_{b,e}/h$ ratio. In contrast, two-component early-type dwarf galaxies do not follow the same correlation. A fraction ($\sim$55%) of them are located outside the locus defined in this plane by having 95$\%$ of bright disc galaxies. This distribution indicates that they are not a low-mass replica of bright disc galaxies. The different location in the $r_{b,e}/h$- $n$ plane of two-component early-type dwarfs and bright galaxies can be qualitatively explain whether the former are remnants of disc galaxies strongly transformed by tidal processes.The progenitors of $\sim$20-25% of early-type dwarf galaxies with $-18 \leq M_{B} \leq -15$ in the Virgo and Coma clusters could be bright disc galaxies transformed by effects of the environment. We conduct a comprehensive numerical study of the orbital dependence of harassment on early-type dwarfs consisting of 168 different orbits within a realistic, Virgo-like cluster, varying in eccentricity and pericentre distance. We find harassment is only effective at stripping stars or truncating their stellar disks for orbits that enter deep into the cluster core. Comparing to the orbital distribution in cosmological simulations, we find that the majority of the orbits (more than three quarters) result in no stellar mass loss. We also study the effects on the radial profiles of the globular cluster systems of early-type dwarfs. We find these are significantly altered only if harassment is very strong. This suggests that perhaps most early-type dwarfs in clusters such as Virgo have not suffered any tidal stripping of stars or globular clusters due to harassment, as these components are safely embedded deep within their dark matter halo. We demonstrate that this result is actually consistent with an earlier study of harassment of dwarf galaxies, despite the apparent contradiction. Those few dwarf models that do suffer stellar stripping are found out to the virial radius of the cluster at redshift=0, which mixes them in with less strongly harassed galaxies. However when placed on phase-space diagrams, strongly harassed galaxies are found offset to lower velocities compared to weakly harassed galaxies. This remains true in a cosmological simulation, even when halos have a wide range of masses and concentrations. We present a catalogue of 348 galaxy clusters and groups with $0.2

We present an overview of and status report on the WEAVE next-generation spectroscopy facility for the William Herschel Telescope (WHT). WEAVE principally targets optical ground-based follow up of upcoming ground-based (LOFAR) and space-based (Gaia) surveys. WEAVE is a multi-object and multi-IFU facility utilizing a new 2-degree prime focus field of view at the WHT, with a buffered pick-and-place positioner system hosting 1000 multi-object (MOS) fibres, 20 integral field units, or a single large IFU for each observation. The fibres are fed to a single spectrograph, with a pair of 8k(spectral) x 6k (spatial) pixel cameras, located within the WHT GHRIL enclosure on the telescope Nasmyth platform, supporting observations at R~5000 over the full 370-1000nm wavelength range in a single exposure, or a high resolution mode with limited coverage in each arm at R~20000. We analysed collisionless N-body simulations of intermediate and minor dry mergers onto S0s to test whether these mergers can generate S0 galaxies with kinematics intermediate between fast and slow rotators. We find that minor mergers induce a lower decrease of the global rotational support than encounters of lower mass ratios, which results in S0s with properties intermediate between fast and slow rotators. The resulting remnants are intrinsically more triaxial, less flattened, and span the whole range of apparent ellipticities up to $\epsilon_\mathrm{e} \sim 0.8$. They do not show lower apparent ellipticities in random projections than initially; on the contrary, the formation of oval distortions and the disc thickening increase the percentage of projections at $0.4 < \epsilon_\mathrm{e} < 0.7$. In the experiments with S0b progenitor galaxies, minor mergers tend to spin up the bulge and to decrease slightly its intrinsic ellipticity, whereas in the cases of primary S0c galaxies they keep the rotational support of the bulge nearly constant and decrease significantly its intrinsic ellipticity. The remnant bulges remain nearly spherical ($B/A \sim C/A > 0.9$), but exhibit a wide range of triaxialities ($0.20 < T < 1.00$). In the plane of global anisotropy of velocities ($\delta$) vs. intrinsic ellipticity ($\epsilon_\mathrm{e,intr}$), some of our models extend the linear trend found in previous major merger simulations towards higher $\epsilon_\mathrm{e,intr}$ values, while others depart from it. This is consistent with the wide dispersion exhibited by real S0s in this diagram compared with ellipticals, which follow the linear trend drawn by major merger simulations. The different trends exhibited by ellipticals and S0 galaxies in the $\delta$ - $\epsilon_\mathrm{e}$ diagram may be pointing to the different role played by major mergers in the build-up of each morphological type., Comment: Corrected typos. 20 pages, 14 figures. We present integral-field spectroscopic observations with the VIMOS-IFU at the VLT of fast (2000-3000 km/s) Balmer-dominated shocks surrounding the northwestern rim of the remnant of supernova 1006. The high spatial and spectral resolution of the instrument enable us to show that the physical characteristics of the shocks exhibit a strong spatial variation over few atomic scale lengths across 133 sky locations. Our results point to the presence of a population of non-thermal protons (10-100 keV) which might well be the seed particles for generating high-energy cosmic rays. We present the XMM-Newton X-ray analysis of RXJ1720.1+2638 and Abell267, a non-fossil and a fossil system, respectively. The whole spectrum of both objects can be explained by thermal emission. The luminosities found for RXJ1720.1+2638 and Abell267 in the 2-10 keV band are 6.20^{+0.04}_{-0.02}\times10^{44} and 3.90^{+0.10}_{-0.11}\times10^{44} cgs, respectively. The radial profiles show a cool core nature for the non-fossil system RXJ1720.1+2638, while Abell267 shows a constant behaviour of temperature with radius. Metallicity profiles have also been produced, but no evidence of any gradient was detected due to the large uncertainties in the determination of this parameter. Finally, density and mass profiles were also produced allowing to derive M_500 for RXJ1720.1+2638 and Abell267. The masses obtained are high, in the range of (5-7)10^{14}\,M_{\odot}. The X-ray properties obtained for both systems are not always in good agreement with what is expected: cool cores are expected for fossil systems, as Abell267, considering them as and relaxed systems. However, the decrement of the temperature in Abell267 could start at lower radii. Also the presence of a recent merger in Abell267, already suggested in the literature, could have increased the central temperature. The non-fossil system RXJ1720.1+2638 actually exhibits a cool core profile, but also evidence of a recent merger has been reported., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomische Nachrichten

Galaxy mergers are considered as questionable mechanisms for the evolution of lenticular galaxies (S0's), on the basis that even minor ones induce structural changes that are difficult to reconcile with the strong bulge-disk coupling observed in the photometric scaling relations of S0's. We check if the evolution induced onto S0's by dry intermediate and minor mergers can reproduce their photometric scaling relations, analysing the bulge-disk decompositions of the merger simulations presented in Eliche-Moral et al. (2012). The mergers induce an evolution in the photometric planes compatible with the data of S0's, even in those ones indicating a strong bulge-disk coupling. The mergers drive the formation of the observed photometric relation in some cases, whereas they induce a slight dispersion compatible with data in others. Therefore, this evolutionary mechanism tends to preserve these scaling relations. In those photometric planes where the morphological types segregate, the mergers always induce evolution towards the region populated by S0's. The structural coupling of the bulge and the disk is preserved or reinforced because the mergers trigger internal secular processes in the primary disk that induce significant bulge growth, even although these models do not induce bars. Intermediate and minor mergers can thus be considered as plausible mechanisms for the evolution of S0's attending to their photometric scaling relations, as they can preserve and even strengthen any pre-existing structural bulge-disk coupling, triggering significant internal secular evolution (even in the absence of bars or dissipational effects). Recent studies have argued that galaxy mergers are not important drivers for the evolution of S0's, on the basis that mergers cannot preserve the coupling between the bulge and disk scale-lengths observed in these galaxies and the lack of correlation of their ratio with the S0 Hubble type. We investigate whether the remnants resulting from collision-less N-body simulations of intermediate and minor mergers onto S0 galaxies evolve fulfilling global structural relations observed between the bulges and disks of these galaxies. Different initial bulge-to-disk ratios of the primary S0 have been considered, as well as different satellite densities, mass ratios, and orbits of the encounter. We have analysed the final morphology of the remnants in images simulating the typical observing conditions of S0 surveys. We derive bulge+disk decompositions of the final remnants to compare their global bulge-to-disk structure with observations. We show that all remnants present undisturbed S0 morphologies according to the prescriptions of specialized surveys. The dry intermediate and minor mergers induce noticeable bulge growth (S0c --> S0b and S0b --> S0a), but affect negligibly to the bulge and disk scale-lengths. Therefore, if a coupling between these two components exists prior to the merger, the encounter does not break this coupling. This fact provides a simple explanation for the lack of correlation between the ratio of bulge and disk scale-lengths and the S0 Hubble type reported by observations. These models prove that dry intermediate and minor mergers can induce global structural evolution within the sequence of S0 Hubble types compatible with observations, meaning that these processes should not be discarded from the evolutionary scenarios of S0's just on the basis of the strong coupling observed between the bulge and disk scale-lengths in these galaxies (abridged)., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics, 12 pages, 11 figures. According to the current cosmological paradigm, large scale structures form hierarchically in the Universe. Clusters of galaxies grow through a continuous accretion of mass. Nevertheless, the rate and manner of mass accretion events are still matters of debate. We have analysed the presence of substructures in one of the largest sample of nearby cluster galaxies available in the literature. We have determined the fraction of clusters with substructure and the properties of the galaxies located in such substructures. Substructure in the galaxy clusters was studied using the Dressler--Shectman test, which was calibrated through extensive Monte Carlo simulations of galaxy clusters similar to real ones. In order to avoid possible biases in the results due to differing incompleteness among clusters, we selected two galaxy populations: a) galaxies brighter than M$_{r} = $-20 located in clusters at $z < 0.1$ (EC1); and b) galaxies of brightness $M_{r} < -19$ located at $z<0.07$ (EC2). In the inner cluster regions ($r < r_{200}$) 11$\%$ and 33$\%$ of the clusters of EC1 and EC2 respectively show substructure. This fraction is larger in the outer cluster regions ($\approx 55\%$) for EC1 and EC2 samples. Cluster global properties, such as $\sigma_{c}$, $f_{b}$ or $\Delta m_{12}$ do not depend on the amount of cluster substructure. We have studied the properties of individual galaxies located in substructures in the EC1 and EC2 galaxy populations. The fraction of galaxies within substructures is larger in the outer cluster regions when fainter galaxies are included. The distribution of relative velocities of galaxies within substructures suggest that they consist of an infalling population mixed with backsplash galaxies. The intracluster light (ICL) is a faint diffuse stellar component in clusters made of stars not bound to individual galaxies. We have carried out a large scale study of this component in the nearby Virgo cluster. The diffuse light is traced using planetary nebulae (PNe). The PNe are detected in the on-band image due to their strong emission in the [OIII] 5007 line, but disappear in the off-band image. The contribution of Ly-alpha emitters at z=3.14 are corrected statistically using blank field surveys. We have surveyed a total area of 3.3 square degrees in the Virgo cluster with eleven fields located at different radial distances. Those fields located at smaller radii than 80 arcmin from the cluster center contain most of the detected diffuse light. In this central region of the cluster, the ICL has a surface brightness in the range 28.8 - 30 mag per sqarsec in the B band, it is not uniformly distributed, and represents about 7% of the total galaxy light in this area. At distances larger than 80 arcmin the ICL is confined to single fields and individual sub-structures, e.g. in the Virgo sub-clump B, the M60/M59 group. For several fields at 2 and 3 degrees from the Virgo cluster center we set only upper limits. These results indicate that the ICL is not homogeneously distributed in the Virgo core, and it is concentrated in the high density regions of the Virgo cluster, e.g. the cluster core and other sub-structures. Outside these regions, the ICL is confined within areas of 100 kpc in size, where tidal effects may be at work. We present high resolution FLAMES/VLT spectroscopy of intracluster planetary nebula (ICPN) candidates, targeting three new fields in the Virgo cluster core with surface brightness down to mu_B = 28.5. Based on the projected phase space information we separate the old and 12 newly-confirmed PNs into galaxy and intracluster components. The M87 PNs are confined to the extended stellar envelope of M87, within a projected radius of ~ 160 kpc, while the ICPNs are scattered across the whole surveyed region between M87 and M86. The velocity dispersions determined from the M87 PNs at projected radii of 60 kpc and 144 kpc show that the galaxy's velocity dispersion profile decreases in the outer halo, down to 78 +/- 25 km/s. A Jeans model for the M87 halo stars in the gravitational potential traced by the X-ray emission fits the observed velocity dispersion profile only if the stellar orbits are strongly radially anisotropic (beta ~= 0.4 at r ~= 10 kpc increasing to 0.8 at the outer edge), and if additionally the stellar halo is truncated at ~= 150 kpc average elliptical radius. From the spatial and velocity distribution of the ICPNs we infer that M87 and M86 are falling towards each other and that we may be observing them just before the first close pass. We present the observational properties of the dwarf galaxy population (Mr > M*+1) corresponding to one of the largest samples of spectroscopically confirmed galaxy cluster members reported in the literature. We have observed that red dwarf galaxies (u-r > 2.22) share the same cluster environment as the brightest cluster members (Mr < -21), but are not in dynamical equilibrium. We computed the dwarf-to-giant ratio (DGR) using a spectroscopically selected sample. The DGR was found to vary with clustercentric distance, essentially due to the blue dwarf population (u-r < 2.22). The u-r color of red dwarf galaxies was independent of their environment and similar to the color of red isolated dwarfs. Blue dwarf galaxies located outside r200 show similar u-r colors to those of the field population, while strong reddening was observed toward the cluster center. We also present evidence that the fraction of red to blue dwarf galaxies in clusters is larger in the innermost cluster regions. We conclude that the present red dwarf population observed in the central regions of nearby galaxy clusters could be related to the blue dwarf population observed in clusters at high redshift., Comment: 5 pages, 3 color figures, accepted for publication in the ApJ Letters

The structural properties of the low surface brightness stellar host in blue compact dwarf galaxies are often studied by fitting r^{1/n} models to the outer regions of their radial profiles. The limitations imposed by the presence of a large starburst emission overlapping the underlying component makes this kind of analysis a difficult task. We propose a two-dimensional fitting methodology in order to improve the extraction of the structural parameters of the LSB host. We discuss its advantages and weaknesses by using a set of simulated galaxies and compare the results for a sample of eight objects with those already obtained using a one-dimensional technique. We fit a PSF convolved Sersic model to synthetic galaxies, and to real galaxy images in the B, V, R filters. We restrict the fit to the stellar host by masking out the starburst region and take special care to minimize the sky-subtraction uncertainties. In order to test the robustness and flexibility of the method, we carry out a set of fits with synthetic galaxies. Furthermore consistency checks are performed to assess the reliability and accuracy of the derived structural parameters. The more accurate isolation of the starburst emission is the most important advantage and strength of the method. Thus, we fit the host galaxy in a range of surface brightness and in a portion of area larger than in previous published 1D fits with the same dataset. We obtain robust fits for all the sample galaxies, all of which, except one, show Sersic indices n very close to 1, with good agreement in the three bands. These findings suggest that the stellar hosts in BCDs have near-exponential profiles, a result that will help us to understand the mechanisms that form and shape BCD galaxies, and how they relate to the other dwarf galaxy classes., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures (low resolution), accepted for publication in A&A. We report on the discovery of a faint (M_V ~ -10.6 +/- 0.2) dwarf spheroidal galaxy on deep F606W and F814W Hubble Space Telescope images of a Virgo intracluster field. The galaxy is easily resolved in our images, as our color magnitude diagram (CMD) extends > 1 magnitude beyond the tip of the red giant branch (RGB). Thus, it is the deepest CMD for a small dwarf galaxy inside a cluster environment. Using the colors of the RGB stars, we derive a metal abundance for the dwarf of [M/H]= -2.3 +/- 0.3, and show that the metallicity dispersion is less than 0.6 dex at 95% confidence. We also use the galaxy's lack of AGB stars and the absence of objects brighter than M_bol ~ -4.1 +/- 0.2 to show that the system is old (t >~10 Gyr). Finally, we derive the object's structural parameters, and show that the galaxy displays no obvious evidence of tidal threshing. Since the tip of the red giant branch distance ((m-M)_0 = 31.23 +/- 0.17 or D = 17.6 +/- 1.4 Mpc) puts the galaxy near the core of the Virgo cluster, one might expect the object to have undergone some tidal processing. Yet the chemical and morphological similarity between the dwarf and the dSph galaxies of the Local and M81 Group demonstrates that the object is indeed pristine, and not the shredded remains of a much larger galaxy. We have used the Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) to detect and measure ~5300 stars in a single intracluster field in the Virgo Cluster. By performing F606W and F814W photometry on these stars, we have determined their metallicity distribution function, and constrained the types of stars present in this portion of Virgo's intracluster space. Based on the small number of stars detected brighter than the red giant branch (RGB) tip, we suggest that in this region, Virgo's intracluster stars are mostly old (>~10 Gyr). Through analysis of the RGB stars themselves, we determine that the population contains the full range of metallicities probed (-2.3<[M/H]<0.0). We also present evidence that the younger (<10 Gyr) component of the population is more metal-rich, with [M/H]>-0.5. The spatial distribution of the most metal-poor stars in the field shows significantly more structure than that of the metal-rich stars, indicating that the intracluster population is not well-mixed. We report the discovery of 4 candidate intracluster globular clusters (IGCs) in a single deep HST ACS field of the Virgo Cluster. We show that each cluster is roughly spherical, has a magnitude near the peak of the Virgo globular cluster luminosity function, has a radial profile that is best-fit by a King model, and is surrounded by an excess of point sources which have the colors and magnitudes of cluster red giant stars. Despite the fact that two of our IGC candidates have integrated colors redder than the mean of the M87 globular cluster system, we propose that all of the objects are metal-poor with [M/H] < -1. We show that the tidal radii of our intracluster globulars are all larger than the mean for Milky Way clusters, and suggest that the clusters have undergone less tidal stress than their Galactic counterparts. Finally, we normalize our globular cluster observations to the luminosity of intracluster stars, and derive a value of S_N ~ 6 for the specific frequency of Virgo intracluster globular clusters. We use these data to constrain the origins of Virgo's intracluster population, and suggest that globular clusters in our intracluster field have a different origin than globular clusters in the vicinity of M87. Radial velocities of 40 intracluster planetary nebulae (ICPNe) in the Virgo cluster were obtained with the new multi-fiber FLAMES spectrograph on UT2 at VLT. For the first time, the lambda 4959 AA line of the [OIII] doublet is seen in a large fraction (50%) of ICPNe spectra, and a large fraction of the photometric candidates with m(5007) <\= 27.2 is spectroscopically confirmed. ICPNe with the velocity dispersion of the Virgo cluster are found in our CORE field 1 deg from M87. These may have originated from tidal mass loss of smaller galaxies in the M87 subcluster halo. In a field 0.25 deg from M87, we see an extended stellar halo of M87 in approximate dynamical equilibrium, but with few ICPNe. Finally, in a field near M84/M86, the ICPNe velocities are highly correlated with the galaxy velocities, showing that any well-mixed intracluster population is yet to form. Based on drizzled F606W and F814W images, we present quantitative structural parameters in the V-band rest-frame for all galaxies with z<1 and I_814(AB)<24.5 mag in the Hubble Deep Fields North and South. Our structural parameters are based on a two-component surface brightness distribution using a Sersic bulge and an exponential disc. Detailed simulations and comparisons with previous work are presented. The luminosity-size distribution of early-type galaxies is consistent with the hypothesis that their structural properties were already in place by z~1 and have evolved passively since then; early-type galaxies were ~1.35(+-0.1) mag brighter in rest-frame V-band luminosity at z~0.7 than now. Compared to present day late-type galaxies, those at z~0.7 with L_V>0.2x10^{10} h^{-2} L_sun show a moderate decrease (~30(+-10)%) in size (or interpreted differently, a decrease of ~0.77(+-0.30) mag in the central surface brightness) at a given luminosity. We have observed emission line objects located in a 0.26 deg^2 field in the M96 (Leo) group, coincident with the intergalactic HI cloud. The emission line objects were selected using the same procedure as used for the search for intracluster planetary nebulae in the Virgo cluster, and their m_5007 luminosity function has a bright cut-off ~1.2 magnitude fainter than for the PNLF associated with the elliptical galaxies in the M96 group.Therefore the vast majority of these emission line objects are compatible with not being intragroup planetary nebulae at the Leo group distance of 10 Mpc. Spectroscopic follow-up of two emission line objects in this Leo field showed that indeed these do not have the [OIII] doublet expected for a real PN. The brighter source is identified as a starburst object at redshift z = 3.128, because of a second emission in the near infrared, identified as FeII (\lambda 2220 AA). From these data we derive three main results: (i) from the absence of PN we can determine a more stringent upper limit to the surface brightness in any old stellar population associated with the Leo HI cloud. (ii) This translates to an upper limit of 1.6% for the fraction of luminosity in a diffuse intragroup component in the densest 3 x 2 deg area of the Leo group,relative to the light in galaxies. (iii) Using this Leo field as a blank field, we derive an average fraction of 13.6% background emission line objects that enter in surveys of Virgo intracluster PN. The small fraction confirms the validity of the selection criteria for intracluster PN candidates in Virgo., Comment: 11 pages, in press on Astronomy & Astrophysics
