However, it is not yet known which miRNAs are biologically active (ie, they suppress expression of a target gene) in ovarian cancer cells. Here we set out to determine the most active miRNAs in ovarian cancer cells. Methods: We performed miRNA molecular profiling by quantitative polymerase chain reaction array, and measured miRNA activity using a library of sensor vectors for 291 different conserved miRNAs. We inhibited miR-23a activity using a lentiviral-based decoy, and measured the percentage of apoptotic cells by flow cytometry. Results: Our miRNA activity profiling identified 54 active miRNAs in OVCAR3 cells, and found that over 150 miRNAs had no detectable activity. To study the function of an active miRNA, we selected miR-23a for further analysis. We inhibited miR-23a in OVCAR3 cells using a decoy vector, and found that there was decreased cell death compared to control (7.4%±1.4% versus 11.2%±0.5%; P

The increasing popularity of hypermedia games is reaching far beyond the boundaries of entertainment and edging its way into many educational domains. The growth in game technologies has created new teaching environments through proposals combining learning with fun and motivating expectations which make the use of digital games a relevant trend in versatile learning situations at all educational levels. Based on the implementation of the Shaiex project, funded by the government of Extremadura (Spain) and develop by the research group GexCALL, the aim of this paper is twofold. First, it analyses the steps and requirements for the design of adaptive games for the teaching of English as a foreign language at the preschool level. Exploring the general premises for task adaptation by personalizing content to children's needs and abilities, the implementation of the whole design is described in light of its applicability. Second, an assessment of the adaptive games designed is conducted, based on the assumption that selecting developmentally appropriate digital experiences to meet users' expectations and to maximize their learning potential should undergo careful evaluation.

Background and Aim: Intermediate-risk patients following a colorectal cancer screening program may have differential risk of advanced lesions depending on the findings of an index colonoscopy. The aim of the present study was to comparatively assess advanced colorectal neoplasia risk at the first follow-up colonoscopy among the different intermediate-risk subgroups with a focus on patients with three to four adenomas. Methods: All patients recruited for a baseline screening colonoscopy between 2006 and 2011 were included. Number, size and histopathological characteristics of adenomas were collected. Main outcome was an advanced colorectal neoplasia detection rate (invasive carcinoma or advanced adenoma) at the first follow-up colonoscopy. Low-and high-risk patients were excluded. Results: Five hundred and sixty-one intermediate-risk patients (63.3% men, mean age: 59.01 +/- 6.16 years) underwent indexing and follow-up colonoscopy. By multivariate analysis, three to four adenomas (OR: 3.613 [95% CI: 1.661-7.859], P = 0.001) and adenoma size >= 10 = 1 of >= 10

The 21st century is the generation of Digital Game-Based Learning, a generation growing up with technologies and contributing to the prevalence of digital games [Chuang et al., 10]. Thus, the use of mobile consoles (Nintendo DS or SONY PSP) for entertainment at all ages has increased dramatically, as has the availability of games that meet specific needs, requirements or users preferences. Though this field of applications is not exempt from constraints such as connectivity, usability and technical limitations [Moses, 08; Hussain and Adeeb, 09], mobile learning is now on the agenda at all levels of education [Cheon et al., 12; Frohberg et al., 09; Suki and Suki, 07]. In this study we analyze how Nintendo mobile technology used to teach vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, writing and listening skills can help to improve the learning environment and the results in English for Engineering students. The two-fold investigation aims to (1) evaluate the student's satisfaction with mobile technology and (2) measure student learning with Nintendo DS. In the light of these hypotheses, the results show how the introduction of mobile devices can increase students' interest and motivation in the learning process, fostering the integration of activities and increasing the academic performance of students.

En este trabajo presentamos una herramienta utilizada para evaluar varias prácticas de programación dentro de una asignatura de informática básica del primer curso de dos ingenierías. Nuestro objetivo es utilizar la misma herramienta en todas las prácticas y que ésta sea conocida por los estudiantes para que puedan ser conscientes de su aprendizaje. La herramienta consistirá en una rúbrica y tendrá en cuenta varios aspectos del desarrollo de una práctica: funcionamiento, resolución, documentación, etc. De esta manera, los alumnos podrán ver en qué grado han completado cada aspecto y aprender de los errores para tenerlos en cuenta en el desarrollo de las siguientes prácticas, y consecuentemente, poder obtener una mayor calificación. A lo largo del documento vamos a ver cómo se ha diseñado nuestra rúbrica y para qué se ha utilizado. Finalmente, veremos algunos datos obtenidos de las evaluaciones realizadas con la rúbrica y también las opiniones de nuestros alumnos sobre el diseño de la rúbrica y su utilidad para realizar evaluaciones. SUMMARY -- In this work, we show a tool used to assess a set of programming practices within a subject dealing with basic computing in the first course of two engineering degrees. Our goal is to use the same tool in several practices and this tool should be known by students, thus they will be aware of their learning. The tool consists in a rubric which will take into account some aspects of the development of a practice: working, resolution, software documentation, etc. In this way, students will be able to see in what grade they have completed each aspect and learn from their mistakes in order to take them into account for future practice developments, and, in consequence, getting better marks. Along this document we will see how our rubric has been designed and its use. Finally, we present some assessment data with the rubric and our students’ opinions about the rubric design and its use for assessing.

This is an experimental study of endovascular aortic surgery for evaluation of the effect of thrombosis induced in the aneurysmal sac using a radiofrequency method.To determine the efficacy of the induction of thrombosis of the abdominal aneurysm sac as a prevention of endoleaks after endovascular treatment.Six dogs underwent radiofrequency blood clotting of the aneurysm sac and where afterwards treated with stent-grafting. A comparison with a historical group of 4 dogs with an abdominal aneurysm treated with stent-grafting was used. Radiofrequency was applied to each sac for 1 minute at 127 mA ± 33 (mean ± SD) (tip temperature, 92°C ± 2). IVUS ultrasonography and histology studies were used for the evaluation of the method.The results show the efficacy of the radiofrequency method and its possible future inclusion as a standard clinical application.Endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms is dependent on the complete exclusion of the aneurysm from the arterial circulation. Later growth of the aneurysm is originated from retrograde flow into the sac. This study demonstrates how the use of radiofrequency induced thrombosis in a canine model of aneurysm sac. Ultrasound IVUS enabled further control for assessment of blood coagulation after radiofrequency treatment. This approach may be considered a tool for future prevention of endoleaks, in clinical practice.

El hemangioma hepático es el tumor benigno más frecuente del hígado. La gran mayoría de ellos son de pequeño tamaño, asintomáticos y con un pronóstico excelente. En raras ocasiones son de mayor tamaño y pueden estar asociados a una coagulopatía de consumo denominada síndrome de Kasabach-Merrit. Presentamos el caso de un paciente varón joven con un hemangioma hepático gigante y hemangiomatosis múltiple asociado al síndrome de Kasabach-Merrit. Hepatic hemangioma is the most frequent liver's tumor. The majority are small, asymptomatic and have an excellent prognosis. Those larger than 5 cm can be associated to a consumptive coagulopathy called Kasabach-Merrit syndrome. We present a patient with a giant hepatic hemangioma with multiple hemangimatosis associated to Kasabach-Merrit syndrome.

Objetivo: analizar las características clínicas, el tratamiento y evolución de los pacientes diagnosticados de enfermedad de Wilson (EW) en la región de Murcia. Pacientes y método: se realizó un análisis retrospectivo de las historias clínicas de los 29 pacientes (edad media ± DE, 20,3 ± 13,4 años) con EW diagnosticados en los últimos 16 años. Resultados: el motivo de consulta más frecuente fue el descubrimiento de transaminasas elevadas, en casi la mitad de los pacientes, seguido de temblor o distonía en el 17% respectivamente. El anillo de Kayser-Fleischer se objetivó en 17 de los 29 (58,6%) pacientes (100% de los pacientes con afectación neurológica pura y en el 35,3% de los pacientes con clínica hepática pura; p < 0,001). Los niveles de cobre total en sangre y no unido a ceruloplamina, así como los niveles de cupruria fueron significativamente superiores en los pacientes con síntomas neurológicos y en aquellos con cirrosis hepática, en el momento del diagnóstico. Con D-penicilamina o trientina permanecieron estables o mejoraron durante el periodo de seguimiento 18 pacientes (62%), mientras que 11 pacientes (38%) empeoraron. Diez pacientes fueron sometidos a trasplante hepático. Conclusiones: en nuestra región, los pacientes con EW fueron diagnosticados en edades jóvenes y en la mayoría de casos por enfermedad predominantemente hepática. Los pacientes con enfermedad neurológica o con cirrosis hepática tuvieron cifras más elevadas de cobre libre no unido a ceruloplasmina y de cupruria. La enfermedad evolucionó favorablemente en todos los pacientes excepto en aquellos que fueron diagnosticados con enfermedad hepática o neurológica avanzada. Objective: to analyze the clinical characteristics, treatment, and follow-up of a cohort of 29 patients with Wilson's disease (WD) within the region of Murcia. Patients and method: we reviewed the medical records of 29 cases of WD (mean age, 20.3 ± 13.4 years) diagnosed during the last 16 years. Results: the most frequent reason for consultation was upon discovering a high transaminase level in almost half the patients, followed by tremors or dystonia in 17% of patients, respectively. A Kayser-Fleischer ring was observed in 17/29 (58.6%) of patients (100% of patients with pure neurological involvement and 35% of patients with pure clinical hepatic disease; p < 0.001). Blood copper levels not associated with ceruloplasmin as well as cupruria were notably superior in patients with neurological symptoms and in those with liver cirrhosis at the time of diagnosis. Patient clinical symptoms remained stable with D-penicillamine or trientine, or improved during the observation period, for 18 out of 29 patients (62%), while 11 out of 29 patients (38%) got worse. Conclusions: in our region patients with WD are diagnosed at a younger age, and in most cases for hepatic disease. Patients with neurological disease o liver cirrhosis had a high level of free copper not associated to ceruloplasmin and cupruria. The disease had a favorable evolution in all patients but those diagnosed with hepatic disease or advanced neurological disease.
