- Abstract
Introduction. Silvopastoral systems play an important role in livestock production, provide benefits to the animal and edaphic components, and offer environmental services such as atmospheric carbon sequestration in the soil and biomass. Objective. To evaluate the capacity of atmospheric carbon sequestration in three systems of different complexities focused on livestock production, in northern Colombia. Materials and methods. The study was carried out at the Turipana Research Center of the Corporacion Colombiana de Investigacion Agropecuaria between 2019 and 2021. The dasometric parameters of the tree/shrub component were evaluated. The aboveground (CBA) and belowground (CBR) biomass of these species were estimated with allometric models. The fallen litter biomass (CLIT) and soil organic carbon up to 30 cm, with readings every 10 cm, were quantified by the combustion method and total accumulated carbon. The design corresponded to complete randomized blocks, with three treatments and four repetitions. The treatments corresponded to two silvopastoral systems (SSP) of different complexity and a grass without trees (Pr). Results. Aerial biomass was higher in the SSP (2.18 ± 1.13, 4.51 ± 3.76 t ha-1 C) than in Pr (0.19 ± 0.09 t ha-1 C). The highest accumulation of CBR (1.16 ± 3.76 t ha-1 C) and CLIT (3.09 ± 2.45 t ha-1 C) occurred in SSP2. The soil organic carbon accumulated (COS) values showed higher accumulation in the first stratum. The COS represented in the three systems more than 70 % of the total contribution in accumulated carbon contribution. Conclusion. Under the environmental conditions of the humid tropical dry forest, silvopastoral systems increased the stock of atmospheric carbon in the soil and biomass. The use of SSP is a strategy in the mitigation of greenhouse gases in the livestock production system., Introducción. Introduction. In Colombia, sheep are a promising species for meat production; however, reports on the characteristics of the carcass at a commercial level in the region are unknown. Objective. To diagnose the carcass quality of the sheep slaughtered in a meat processing plant in the Department of Cordoba, Colombia. Materials and methods. From May 2017 to July 2018, variables were recorded in 883 sheep (phenotype, live weight, and sex) and their carcasses (weights, conformation and fatness, intrathoracic hemorrhages, morphometry, and pH at 24 h). A sampling was carried out on four groups of carcasses from castrated (C) and whole (E) animals, with three slaughter weights (lights: CL=±23.8 kg and EL= 23.9 kg; medium: CM=±27.7 kg; heavy: EP=36.2 kg) in an unbalanced design, to evaluate carcass and tissue composition of the shoulder. Results. The hot carcass weight (PCC), carcass yield (RCC), and compactness index were 11.11 kg; 41.49 %, and 0.19. The carcasses showed normal to poor muscular conformation (87.7 %) and very low-fat cover (68.7 %). Males accounted for 84.3 % of the carcasses, with a PCC of 10.86±0.09 kg and a RCC of 41.51±0.1 %. Females, mostly older than one year (66.90 %), had significantly higher PCC 12.47±0.22 kg, but similar RCC than males. Intrathoracic hemorrhages occurred in 10.9% of the carcasses; pH24 in males and females were 5.84±0.01 and 5.94±0.03, respectively. The CL, CM, EL, and EP of carcasses presented, respectively, 63.66, 61.74, 62.17, and 64.80 % of muscle (p<0.05), 7.20, 11.56, 6.48, and 6.80 % of total fat (p<0.001), and 21.35, 19.66, 23.45, and 21.07 % of bone (p<0.001). Conclusion. The sheep presented low slaughter weight, with heterogeneous carcasses, with normal to poor muscular conformation, low compactness index, and very lean., Introducción. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out at a slaughterhouse (SH) located in the Córdoba Department, Colombia. It aims to determine sheep transportation characteristics, pre-slaughter handling, and carcass quality indicators related to animal welfare. We observed 18 unloads and 883 sheep carcasses and recorded vehicle, journey, load data, animal handling characteristics at the SH, and carcass quality in terms of pH and bruises. The average distance was 58.9 kilometers. The transported sheep’s average weight was 26.8 ± 6 kg, and load density was between 38.7 and 275.9 kg/m2. The waiting time at the SH and truck unloading took 21.7 and 38.7 minutes on average, respectively. 88.3% of the animals entered the stunning area pulled or pushed by the operator in charge. The average time between stunning and bleeding was 74 seconds. 29.2% of the carcasses had some degree bruising; 78.8% affected only subcutaneous tissue and 21.2% muscle tissue. 58.9% of bruises were < 5 cm in diameter, 23.6% between 5 and 10 cm, and 17.4% > 10 cm. The loin was the most affected anatomical region, with 49.8% of the bruising. The average pH24 hours was 5.81.

- Abstract
The study of the ingestion behavior is important to know the animal production performance and is a must when evaluating different feeding regimes. This work aims to evaluate the daytime ingestion behavior and the productive answer in criollo lambs receiving supplement with cotton seeds (CS) and ground corn (GC). Sixteen complete male criollo lambs were used having a starting weight of 16 ± 2 Kg. They were distributed randomly into four experimental treatments consisting in: T0 = shepherding, T1 = shepherding + 25% CS + 75% GC, T2 = shepherding + 50% CS + 50% GC, and T3 = shepherding + 75% CS + 25% GC. Using both external and internal markers, the nutritional composition of the forages and the dry mass consumption in the animals were determined, i.e., the ingestion behavior and the productive performance. The total dry mass consumption showed statistical differences (p < 0.05), with lower consumption among the control animals. Likewise, statistical differences were detected (p < 0.05) between the treatments for shepherding activities, cud, water consumption and walking regarding variables like mouthfuls per minute and total ingestion. The final weight and the weight gain in the animals receiving supplements were higher in 28.4 % and 50.3 %, respectively.

ANIMAL weaning ,LAMBS ,EWES ,LIVESTOCK handling ,ANIMAL welfare ,EFFECT of stress on animals ,THERMOGRAPHY ,ANIMAL behavior - Abstract
Postweaning management strategies that include an element of social enrichment may reduce weaning stress and improve welfare and productive performance. We analyzed the effect of postweaning handling strategies on welfare and production traits in lambs. After weaning, 36 lambs were assigned to 3 experimental groups with 12 lambs each (control [C], fattening with gentle human female contact [H], and fattening with 2 adult ewes [E]). The average daily gain (ADG) was estimated. Blood samples were taken, and infrared thermography was used to estimate stress variables. There were significant differences among treatments (in favor of alternative strategies) regarding production and stress variables (cortisol, glucose, and creatine kinase). The results suggest that the lambs handled gently during the fattening were less reactive and better able to modulate their physiological stress. The E group adapted better to acute stress than the C group but was less efficient in modulating chronic stress. Both treatments showed higher slaughter live weights and better ADGs compared with the control. The use of social enrichment at weaning, especially to establish a positive human–nonhuman animal bond, alleviates lamb weaning stress and improves welfare and performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of the genotype (Pelibuey vs Katahdin), type of lambing (single vs. double) and sex (males vs. females) on the characteristics of the carcass and its cuts, in addition to the fatty acid profile of the loin were evaluated in 66 lambs slaughtered at weaning. The yield of the carcass and ribs were higher (P<0.05) in the Pelibuey breed. Slaughter weight, carcass weight and rib yield were higher (P<0.01) in single-born lambs, while the yield of shoulder and leg were lower (P<0.01) than in double-born lambs. The proportion of soft tissue of the different cuts was higher (P<0.05), but that of bone was lower (P< 0.05) in single-born lambs than in double-born lambs. Females had a higher (P<0.05) proportion of soft tissue and a lower proportion of bone (P<0.01) than males. The concentrations of C18:1n7 and C20:4n- 6 were higher (P<0.05) in the Pelibuey breed than in the Katahdin breed, while the C22:5n- 3 and C22:6n-3 were lower. The percentage of monounsaturated fatty acids was higher (P<0.05) in the meat of single-born lambs, while that of total polyunsaturated fatty acids and n-3 was higher (P<0.05) in double-born lambs. The characteristics of the carcass, the tissue composition of the commercial cuts and the fatty acid profile in hair sheep slaughtered at weaning varied more due to the type of lambing than due to the genotype or sex. The objective was to evaluate the carcass characteristics and fatty acid (FA) profile of the meat of Creole lambs supplemented with cottonseed (CS) and ground corn (GC). Twentyfour (24) males of 90 d and 16 ± 2 kg of initial weight were used. The lambs were assigned to four treatments, T0: grazing; T1: grazing + 25%-CS + 75%-GC; T2: grazing + 50%-CS + 50%-GC and T3: grazing + 75%-CS + 25%-GC, under a complete randomized design. After 127 d of supplementation, the animals were slaughtered, and the hot and cold carcass was weighed. Two hundred grams of the Longissimus dorsi muscle were taken to evaluate the proportion of FAs in each animal using gas chromatography. An analysis of variance was developed to determine the effect of diet. The supplemented animals had an average weight of 32.15 kg, being higher (P<0.05) than that registered by the lambs of the T0 (23.3 kg). Similarly, a higher average yield of the carcasses of lambs that received supplementation 48.2 vs 39.5 %) was observed. Palmitic and stearic FAs increased in the meat of supplemented animals (P≤0.05), especially in those fed the T2 diet. Supplementation with CS and GC positively altered (P≤0.05) the ratio of monounsaturated acids (MFAs) and polyunsaturated acids (PFAs). The treatments did not influence (P>0.05) the MFA:SFA ratio and the atherogenicity index. However, the diet affected (P<0.05) the desirable PFA:SFA and FA ratio. Supplementation with CS and GC positively influenced slaughter weight, carcass yield and fatty acid profile in lambs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
