Conservation tillage (CA) is an option for maintaining soil health and the surrounding environment for intensive agriculture, especially on the tropical climate. A three years lengthy research experiment was performed in arid climate from 2014 to 2016 at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) to evaluate the effect of conservation tillage approaches on environmental sustainability and water productivity of irrigated maize cultivation. The conservation tillage practices (Zero tillage-ZT and Minimum tillage-MT) are evaluated in comparison to the traditional farmer’s practices. Amongst these, the treatment combination having MT with optimum irrigation best suits for cost-effective sustainable technique in maize cultivation without compromising with the yield at the dry season in the red brown terrace soil of Bangladesh. This combination of CA treatment is environment-friendly for maize cultivation as the treatment combination consumes the lowest amount of fuel (29.70 L/ha) for tilling purposes and required fewer water resources (only 2 time irrigation) for irrigation purposes and thus reduces the amount of carbon dioxide and other emitted toxic gaseous molecules to the surrounding environment. Therefore, MT with optimum irrigation is evaluated as the best options for continuous maize cultivation in the red brown terrace soil without any yield penalty.

Vector-borne diseases transmitted by mosquitoes and ticks are on the rise. The effective and sustainable control of these arthropod vectors is a puzzling challenge for public health worldwide. In the present review, I attempted to provide a concise and updated overview of the current mosquito and tick research scenario. The wide array of control tools recently developed has been considered, with special reference to those approved by the World Health Organization Vector Control Advisory Group (WHO VCAG), as well as novel ones with an extremely promising potential to be exploited in vector control programs. Concerning mosquitoes, a major focus has been given on genetically modified vectors, eave tubes, attractive toxic sugar baits (ATSB) and biocontrol agents. Regarding ticks, the recent development of highly effective repellents and acaricides (including nanoformulated ones) as well as behavior-based control tools, has been highlighted. In the second part of the review, key research questions about biology and control of mosquitoes and ticks have been critically formulated. A timely research agenda outlining hot issues to be addressed in mosquito and tick research is provided. Overall, it is expected that the present review will contribute to boost research and applications on successful mosquito and tick control strategies, along with an improved knowledge of their biology and ecology. The paper introduces a new perspective on abstract concepts (e.g. "freedom") and their associate words representation, the Words As social Tools (WAT) view. Traditional theories conceptualize language as a way to index referents, a shortcut to access meaning, or a way to access meaning through words associations. WAT goes beyond these theories by identifying additional functions of words and language: words are tools helping us to perform actions and change the state of our social environment, and language is a means to improve our thought abilities, to control our behavior and plays a predictive role, helping us to form categories. Most importantly, WAT proposes that language and sociality - along with interoceptive and metacognitive processes - are key for the grounding of abstract concepts (ACs) that are more complex, variable, and more detached from perceptual and motor experience than concrete concepts (CCs). We highlight four tenets of WAT and discuss each of them in light of recent evidence: a. acquisition: compared to concrete concepts, the acquisition of abstract concepts relies more on social and linguistic inputs; b. brain representation: abstract concepts recruit more linguistic and social brain areas; c. mouth activation: due to the relevance of language for representing them, abstract concepts activate more the oral motor system; d. linguistic variability: abstract concepts are more affected by differences between spoken languages. We discuss evidence supporting these four tenets of WAT, and its advantages and limitations compared to other views on abstract concepts. Finally, we outline a conceptual proposal that specifies how internal models supporting the representation and processing of ACs can be grounded on interoceptive, metacognitive, social, and linguistic experience.

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) encodes for proteins mainly involved in the oxidative phosphorylation process, and due to its molecular features, it is one of the most used molecular markers for phylogenetic and taxonomic purposes. Since mitochondria are the primary source of energy for aerobic organisms, it has been suggested that modifications of the mitochondrial genome’s features could be linked with major adaptive processes to particular environmental conditions. In this respect, Antarctic Collembola (springtails) may be considered an interesting model to study whether positive selective pressure has occurred, inducing significant changes in the mtDNA characteristics that have eventually led to cold adaptation. In this study, we describe the molecular features of the mitochondrial genome of Cryptopygus terranovus, a springtail species endemic to Victoria Land. Molecular data are also employed to support the new taxonomic placement of C. terranovus, and to establish if the conspecific lineages of Friesea antarctica, that lives in separated biogeographical regions of the Antarctic Continent, are indeed distinct species. Finally, all the mitochondrial genomes of springtails, so far sequenced, were applied for calculating the ratio (ω) of nonsynonymous versus synonymous nucleotide substitutions. This approach allowed us to investigate if Antarctic collembolans could have experienced Darwinian selective pressures compared to the non-Antarctic springtail species. Indeed, our data does indicate positive selection (ω > 1), suggesting that survival at extreme environmental conditions could be also related to mtDNA modifications.

Tannins were recently evaluated as feed additives in order to increase antioxidant compounds in animal diet, mainly to enhance resistance to lipid oxidation in meat. Rabbit meat is one of the most susceptible animal products, thus the main aim of this study was to evaluate the capacity of tannins to elongate shelf life of rabbit meat. Ninety hybrid rabbits were fed with three different diets: basal diet (control, C) and basal diet supplemented with 0.3% or 0.6% of tannins mix. Meat samples were refrigerated as raw at 4°C up to 11 days and analysed both as raw and cooked for physical-chemical characteristics, fatty acids profile, lipid oxidation and antioxidant capacity. Results showed that dietary tannins affected meat colour of raw samples (mostly yellowness). Lipid peroxidation (TBARS) of raw samples was lower in tannins group than C group; a further inhibition of peroxidation was showed also in cooked samples only by the highest dose of tannins mix. Moreover, antioxidant capacity (ABTS) of raw samples increased with the percentage of tannins. In conclusion, supplementation with 0.6% of tannins mix seems to positively affect the lipid peroxidation and antioxidant capacity of meat without modifying the intrinsic characteristics of rabbit meat.

Honeybee-collected pollen is gaining attention as functional food for human consumption, due to antiproliferative, antiallergic, antibiotic, antidiarrheic and antioxidant activities. Among the different bioactive compounds, flavonoids from bee-collected pollen are currently recognised as powerful antioxidant and antiradical molecules. Traditional conservation methods influence pollen organoleptic properties as well as the contents of nutrients and nutraceutical compounds. Here, freeze-drying (FD) was proposed as a novel conservation method, estimating its adequacy as drying process by the evaluation of changes in free and total amino acids and proline as well as in their ratios. Honeybee-collected chestnut pollen was taken into consideration and the level of rutin, as main flavonoid, was considered as marker compound highlighting the maintenance of pollen nutraceutical properties. Results showed that FD influenced rutin level, depending on the FD duration. However, the free proline to free amino acid ratio was always below 80%, and the free amino acid to total amino acid ratio remained unaltered indicating the adequacy of the FD treatment, which did not affect the nutritional value of chestnut pollen. Overall, this study shed light on the nutraceutical profile of honeybee-collected chestnut pollen, highlighting the promising potential of FD as a novel method to treat pollen for human consumption. The Species-Area Relation (SAR), which describes the increase in the number of species S with increasing area A, is under intense scrutiny in contemporary ecology, in particular to probe its reliability in predicting the number of species going extinct as a direct result of habitat loss. Here, we focus on the island SAR, which is measured across a set of disjoint habitat patches, and we argue that the SAR portrays an average trend around which fluctuations are to be expected due to the stochasticity of community dynamics within the patches, external perturbations, and habitat heterogeneity across different patches. This probabilistic interpretation of the SAR, though already implicit in the theory of island biogeography and manifest in the scatter of data points in plots of empirical SAR curves, has not been investigated systematically from the theoretical point of view. Here, we show that the two main contributions to SAR fluctuations, which are due to community dynamics within the patches and to habitat heterogeneity between different patches, can be decoupled and analyzed independently. To investigate the community dynamics contribution to SAR fluctuations, we explore a suite of theoretical models of community dynamics where the number of species S inhabiting a patch emerges from diverse ecological and evolutionary processes, and we compare stationary predictions for the coefficient of variation of S, i.e. the fluctuations of S with respect to the mean. We find that different community dynamics models diverge radically in their predictions. In island biogeography and in neutral frameworks, where fluctuations are only driven by the stochasticity of diversification and extinction events, relative fluctuations decay when the mean increases. Computational evidence suggests that this result is robust in the presence of competition for space or resources. When species compete for finite resources, and mass is introduced as a trait determining species' birth, death and resource consumption rates based on empirical allometric scalings, relative fluctuations do not decay with increasing mean S due to the occasional introduction of new species with large resource demands causing mass extinctions in the community. Given this observation, we also investigate the contribution of external disturbance events to fluctuations of S in neutral community dynamics models and compare this scenario with the community dynamics in undisturbed non-neutral models. Habitat heterogeneity within a single patch, in the context of metapopulation models, causes variability in the number of coexisting species which proves negligible with respect to that caused by the stochasticity of the community dynamics. The second contribution to SAR fluctuations, which is due to habitat heterogeneity among different patches, introduces corrections to the coefficient of variation of S. Most importantly, inter-patches heterogeneity introduces a constant, lower bound on the relative fluctuations of S equal to the coefficient of variation of a habitat variable describing the heterogeneity among patches. Because heterogeneity across patches is inevitably present in natural ecosystems, we expect that the relative fluctuations of S always tend to a constant in the limit of large mean S or large patch area A, with contributions from community dynamics, inter-patches heterogeneity or both. We provide a theoretical framework for modelling these two contributions and we show that both can affect significantly the fluctuations of the SAR. (C) 2018 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

The present study investigates the impact of climate change on the availability of groundwater resources in Italy and in Campania region (Southern Italy). A 20-year average from 1996 to 2015 of annual water budget components (namely total precipitation, actual evapotranspiration, surface runoff and aquifer recharge) has been evaluated over a 1-km resolution grid and have been projected considering four climate change scenarios (from the Fifth Assessment Report of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) and three different future 20-year time periods (2020–2039, 2040–2059 and 2080–2099). The groundwater balance has been carried out on a yearly basis using the “Nationwide GIS-based regular gridded hydrological water budget” procedure, which has been developed by the Italian National Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA). The different scenarios of groundwater resources have been compared and matched to the 20-year average of latest historical values related to the period 1996–2015, leading to interesting considerations about the future depletion of groundwater resources. Nationwide results have been compared with those of Campania region, in order to underline the significant differences of climate change impact on groundwater resources at local scale, especially in a typical Mediterranean climate where groundwater resources represent the main source of water for human needs.

Background Recent genome studies of modern and ancient samples have proposed that Native Americans derive from a subset of the Eurasian gene pool carried to America by an ancestral Beringian population, from which two well-differentiated components originated and subsequently mixed in different proportion during their spread in the Americas. To assess the timing, places of origin and extent of admixture between these components, we performed an analysis of the Y-chromosome haplogroup Q, which is the only Pan-American haplogroup and accounts for virtually all Native American Y chromosomes in Mesoamerica and South America. Results Our analyses of 1.5 Mb of 152 Y chromosomes, 34 re-sequenced in this work, support a “coastal and inland routes scenario” for the first entrance of modern humans in North America. We show a major phase of male population growth in the Americas after 15 thousand years ago (kya), followed by a period of constant population size from 8 to 3 kya, after which a secondary sign of growth was registered. The estimated dates of the first expansion in Mesoamerica and the Isthmo-Colombian Area, mainly revealed by haplogroup Q-Z780, suggest an entrance in South America prior to 15 kya. During the global constant population size phase, local South American hints of growth were registered by different Q-M848 sub-clades. These expansion events, which started during the Holocene with the improvement of climatic conditions, can be ascribed to multiple cultural changes rather than a steady population growth and a single cohesive culture diffusion as it occurred in Europe. Conclusions We established and dated a detailed haplogroup Q phylogeny that provides new insights into the geographic distribution of its Eurasian and American branches in modern and ancient samples. Studies on the effects of tannins on plant-parasitic nematodes are few. A new formulation of a hydrolysable tanninextracted from chestnut (SaviotaN®) was tested for efficacy in controlling Meloidogyne incognita. Therefore, in vitro andpot experiments on tomato were performed to investigate the nematicidal activity of tannin aqueous solutions at differentconcentrations on M. incognita. In the in vitro experiment the following concentrations of tannin at 0.30, 0.40, 0.50, 0.75,1.00, 1.25, 1.50 g L−1 were tested for their effect on the nematode. The second-stage juveniles (J2s) immobility increasedwith increasing concentration and exposure time. All tested tannin concentrations were effective to reduce viability fromabout 45 to 70% after 10 days of exposure, in comparison to the treated and untreated controls. The immobile J2s recoveredtheir mobility over time after rinsing and transferring them in water, showing a nematostatic activity of tannins. In the potexperiment, tannins, as aqueous solutions at rates from 0.30 to 1.50 g L−1, were applied to soil at three different applicationtimes (1: only at transplant; 2: at transplant, two weeks after transplant and repeated every seven days; 3: at transplant andtwo weeks later). The activity of tannins was compared to treated and untreated controls. Tested rates mostly repeated wereeffective to control nematode attack in comparison to untreated control. The height of treated plants was not significantlyinfluenced by the different applied rates of tannins, whereas nematode population density and root galling index wereaffected by repeated application times. No visual symptoms of phytotoxicity were detected. The use of SaviotaN®appearspromising for the control of M. incognitain sustainable agriculture of short-term crops and/or when nematode populationdensities are low and as a supplement to other chemical treatments.

The red gum lerp psyllid, Glycaspis brimblecombei Moore (Hemiptera, Aphalaridae), is an Australian native sap-sucking insect pest of eucalypts that has been first reported for the West Palaearctic Region in 2008 and, in 2010, it has been found also in Italy. Subsequently its primary parasitoid, Psyllaephagus bliteus Riek (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), was also detected within the main European and North African infested areas, where no release of the parasitoid was ever performed. This study, carried out in 30 Eucalyptus camaldulensis plantations located along the coast, on the hills and the mountains in Mediterranean climatic areas of Sicily (Italy), aimed to determine the influence of environmental parameters on the incidence of both, the psyllid infestation level and the parasitization activity. P. bliteus reached highest average levels in summer samplings and resulted widespread in Sicily at all detected altitudes without statistically significant differences. P. bliteus parasitization is the main factor lowering G. brimblecombei infestation; this result, together with the accidental and contemporaneous arrival of the host and its parasitoid, could explain the absence of high damage level on eucalypts in Sicily. The most significant metric factors positively influencing G. brimblecombei infestation are the percentage of daily hours above 80% of relative humidity and the average maximum temperature, obviously related to other, but less significant climatic factors. The altitude affects both infestation and parasitization, but single sites could explain significantly more, so that the local conditions where the samplings were carried out have to be considered as the main responsibles for the variability in the obtained results. In any sampled Sicilian site, from sea level to 540 m a.s.l., both the psyllid and its parasitoids show a good adaptation to climatic conditions, confirming that areas fitting for E. camaldulensis growth fit also for P. bliteus activity, and proving that Mediterranean climate, differently from some inland areas of California, does not obstacle its parasitic activity.

Laboratory trials were performed to evaluate the action of spinosad and mineral oil on eggs of Grapholita funebrana Treitschke, the key pest in plum orchards. Fruits of cultivars Angeleno, President and Stanley were used in the trials. The first set of tests was carried out by introducing two mated females of G. funebrana into a cage together with fruits of a single cultivar. The second set of trials tested the three cultivars simultaneously. In all trials, one third of the fruits of each cultivar was treated with mineral oil, another third with spinosad and the final third was left untreated. Treatments were carried out before introducing mated females into the cages. The number of fruits with eggs, the number of eggs laid on each fruit and the number of hatched eggs were recorded. The number of eggs per fruit recorded in all trials was the same, indicating that plum moth females, after choosing the fruits for oviposition on the basis of the cultivar or the applied product, tend to use all suitable fruits in the same way. Oviposition in terms of number of fruits was significantly lower in mineral oil and spinosad treatments in all trials, compared to the control. Differences between the two products were found in trials carried out with Angeleno alone and with the three cultivars together. The percentage of egg hatching on the fruits was always significantly lower with spinosad treatment compared to the mineral-oil treatment and the control. In the trials carried out using the three cultivars, the number of infested fruits was significantly higher for Angeleno and no differences in the hatching percentages were found among the cultivars. The ovicidal and antiovideponent activities of commercial products containing mineral oils or spinosad could represent an interesting tool to reduce G. funebrana damage, both in organic and conventional plum orchards.

Prioritization of cell cycle-regulated genes from expression time-profiles is still an open problem. The point at issue is the surprisingly poor overlap among ranked lists obtained from different experimental protocols. Instead of developing a general-purpose computational methodology for detecting periodic signals, we focus on the budding yeast mitotic cell cycle. The reason being that the current availability of a total of 12 datasets, produced by 6 independent groups using 4 different synchronization methods, permits a re-analysis and re-consideration of this problem in a more reliable and extensive data domain. Notably, budding yeast is a model organism for studying cancer and testing new drugs. Here we propose a novel multi-feature score (called PERLA, PERiodicity, Regulation and Lag-Autocorrelation) that integrates different features of cell cycle-regulated gene expression time-profiles. We obtained increased performances on a wide range of benchmarks and, most importantly, a substantially increased overlap of the top ranking genes among different datasets, thus proving the effectiveness of the proposed prioritization algorithm. Examples on how to use PERLA to gain new insight into the biology of the cell cycle, are provided in a final dedicated section.

Altres ajuts: PRIN/2010P7LFW4 Border disease virus (BDV) affects a wide range of ruminants worldwide, mainly domestic sheep and goat. Since 2001 several outbreaks of disease associated to BDV infection have been described in Pyrenean chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica pyrenaica) in Spain, France and Andorra. In order to reconstruct the most probable places of origin and pathways of dispersion of BDV among Pyrenean chamois, a phylogenetic analysis of 95 BDV 5'untranslated sequences has been performed on chamois and domestic ungulates, including novel sequences and retrieved from public databases, using a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. Discrete and continuous space phylogeography have been applied on chamois sequences dataset, using centroid positions and latitude and longitude coordinates of the animals, respectively. The estimated mean evolutionary rate of BDV sequences was 2.9×10−3 subs/site/year (95% HPD: 1.5-4.6×10−3). All the Pyrenean chamois isolates clustered in a unique highly significant clade, that originated from BDV-4a ovine clade. The introduction from sheep (dated back to the early 90s) generated a founder effect on the chamois population and the most probable place of origin of Pyrenean chamois BDV was estimated at coordinates 42.42 N and 1.9 E. The pathways of virus dispersion showed two main routes: the first started on the early 90s of the past century with a westward direction and the second arise in Central Pyrenees. The virus spread westward for more than 125 km and southward for about 50km and the estimated epidemic diffusion rate was about 13.1 km/year (95% HPD 5.2-21.4 km/year). The strong spatial structure, with strains from a single locality segregating together in homogeneous groups, and the significant pathways of viral dispersion among the areas, allowed to reconstruct both events of infection in a single area and of migrations, occurring between neighboring areas.

The large patient variability in human physiology and the effects of variables such as exercise or meals challenge current prediction modeling techniques. Physiological models are very precise but they are typically complex and specific physiological knowledge is required. In contrast, data-based models allow the incorporation of additional inputs and accurately capture the relationship between these inputs and the outcome, but at the cost of losing the physiological meaning of the model. In this work, we designed a hybrid approach comprising physiological models for insulin and grammatical evolution, taking into account the clinical harm caused by deviations from the target blood glucose by using a penalizing fitness function based on the Clarke error grid. The prediction models were built using data obtained over 14 days for 100 virtual patients generated by the UVA/Padova T1D simulator. Midterm blood glucose was predicted for the 100 virtual patients using personalized models and different scenarios. The results obtained were promising; an average of 98.31% of the predictions fell in zones A and B of the Clarke error grid. Midterm predictions using personalized models are feasible when the configuration of grammatical evolution explored in this study is used. The study of new alternative models is important to move forward in the development of alarm-and-control applications for the management of type 1 diabetes and the customization of the patient’s treatments. The experimental assessment of the actual reactor hydrodynamic behavior is aimed at detecting possible deviations from the design configuration, as well as suggesting corrective/improving modifications, efficacy of which can be also assessed in the aftermath. The hydrodynamic scheme can be defined by means of tracer tests (stimulus–response method) used for detecting the residence time distribution curve. This study shows the results of three hydrodynamic tests performed on a wastewater treatment plant half-line, in which a biological process (denitrification and oxidation–nitrification) is carried out. Hydrodynamic faults (in terms of dead space and/or flow bypass) were identified, and consequent actions suggested (i.e., change in submerged mixers orientation in the reactors; sinking of the final section of the sludge recirculation pipe below the free surface to avoid foaming phenomena; introduction of new mixed liquor recirculation lines). These actions, together with a careful selection of wastes to be treated, led to an improvement of the overall process performance.

The intraspecific variation in Allium cepa has been overlooked, as in most investigations no mention is made about origin and denomination of the onion cultivar used. A standardization of the used material would allow a better generalization of the results, since we cannot be sure that all cultivars would give the same response. A more frequent use of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigation is proposed. Even if relatively time consuming and not available in all laboratories, it may help to better understand the mechanism of cytotoxicity, since many morphological characters may appear similar but be arisen from different processes observable only with TEM. About statistical testing, tests other than chi-squared may be used in case of a lower amount of data. The most commonly used statistical tests are the parametric tests ANOVA and Student’s t, and the non-parametric tests Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney U, for analysis of variance. Tests should be used also to assess the minimal sample dimension for obtaining significance, since data collection (microscope observation) appears to be one of the main bottle necks of the test. Also the use of the Allium test for testing liposomes and other nanovectors for drug delivery is proposed, in order to assess the cytotoxicity of these types of medium and the possible increase in cytotoxicity of the associated drug. Cattle have been invaluable for the transition of human society from nomadic hunter-gatherers\ud to sedentary farming communities throughout much of Europe, Asia and\ud Africa since the earliest domestication of cattle more than 10,000 years ago.\ud Although current understanding of relationships among ancestral populations remains\ud limited, domestication of cattle is thought to have occurred on two or three\ud occasions, giving rise to the taurine (Bos taurus) and indicine (Bos indicus) species that\ud share the aurochs (Bos primigenius) as common ancestor ~250,000 years ago. Indicine\ud and taurine cattle were domesticated in the Indus Valley and Fertile Crescent, respectively;\ud however, an additional domestication event for taurine in the Western\ud Desert of Egypt has also been proposed. We analysed medium density Illumina\ud Bovine SNP array (~54,000 loci) data across 3,196 individuals, representing 180 taurine\ud and indicine populations to investigate population structure within and between\ud populations, and domestication and demographic dynamics using approximate\ud Bayesian computation (ABC). Comparative analyses between scenarios modelling\ud two and three domestication events consistently favour a model with only two episodes\ud and suggest that the additional genetic variation component usually detected\ud in African taurine cattle may be explained by hybridization with local aurochs in\ud Africa after the domestication of taurine cattle in the Fertile Crescent. African indicine\ud cattle exhibit high levels of shared genetic variation with Asian indicine cattle\ud due to their recent divergence and with African taurine cattle through relatively recent\ud gene flow. Scenarios with unidirectional or bidirectional migratory events between\ud European taurine and Asian indicine cattle are also plausible, although further\ud studies are needed to disentangle the complex human-mediated\ud dispersion patterns\ud of domestic cattle. This study therefore helps to clarify the effect of past demographic\ud history on the genetic variation of modern cattle, providing a basis for further\ud analyses exploring alternative migratory routes for early domestic populations.

In particular, stray hydrophobic proteins are captured in the aqueous cytosol by a co-chaperone, the small glutamine-rich, tetratricopeptide repeat-containing protein alpha (SGTA), which facilitates the correct targeting of tail-anchored membrane proteins, as well as the sorting of membrane and secretory proteins that mislocalize to the cytosol and endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation. Full-length SGTA has an unusual elongated dimeric structure that has, until now, evaded detailed structural analysis. The C-terminal region of SGTA plays a key role in binding a broad range of hydrophobic substrates, yet in contrast to the well-characterized N-terminal and TPR domains, there is a lack of structural information on the C-terminal domain. The project "Biodiversity MARE Tricase" aims to research and promote coastal and marine biodiversity at the MARE Outpost (Avamposto MARE), a marine station established in Tricase (Lecce, Italy) in 2015. From March 2016 to September 2017, the first biodiversity inventory of the Tricase coastal area (Ionian Sea) was realized with the aid of citizen scientists (e.g. local fishermen, divers, bathers, and tourists). Preliminary results include 556 taxa, of which the 95% were identified at the species level. Despite the broad knowledge on Mediterranean coastal biodiversity, 71 species represented new records for the Ionian Sea. In parallel with the research activities, people's awareness of the value of biodiversity was raised with scientific dissemination initiatives, involving about 1700 people. The "Biodiversity MARE Tricase" project realized a first small-scale species inventory contributing to the distributional, taxonomic, and ecological knowledge of the present Mediterranean biota. The coastal area of Tricase will be soon included in a new Marine Protected Area and this project represents a step forward for the sustainable development of the community of this coast.

Aroma is a primary hedonic aspect of a good coffee. Coffee aroma quality is generally defined by cup tasting, which however is time-consuming in terms of panel training and alignment and too subjective. It is challenging to define a relationship between chemical profile and aroma sensory impact, but it might provide an objective evaluation of industrial products. This study aimed to define the chemical signature of coffee sensory notes, to develop prediction models based on analytical measurements for use at the control level. In particular, the sensory profile was linked with the chemical composition defined by HS-SPME-GC-MS, using a chemometric-driven approach. The strategy was found to be discriminative and informative, identifying aroma compounds characteristic of the selected sensory notes. The predictive ability in defining the sensory scores of each aroma note was used as a validation tool for the chemical signatures characterized. The most reliable models were those obtained for woody, bitter, and acidic properties, whose selected volatiles reliably represented the sensory note fingerprints. Prediction models could be exploited in quality control, but compromises must be determined if they are to become complementary to panel tasting.

The authenticity of fish products has become an imperative issue for authorities involved in the protection of consumers against fraudulent practices and market stabilization. The present study aimed to provide a method for authentication of European sea bass ( Dicentrarchus labrax) according to the requirements for seafood labels (Regulation 1379/2013/EU). Data on biometric traits, fatty acid profile, elemental composition, and isotopic abundance of wild and reared (intensively, semi-intensively, and extensively) specimens from 18 southern European sources ( n = 160) were collected, clustered in six sets of parameters, and then subjected to multivariate analysis. Correct allocations of subjects according to their production method, origin, and stocking density were demonstrated with good approximation rates (94, 92, and 92%, respectively) using fatty acid profiles. Less satisfying results were obtained using isotopic abundance, biometric traits, and elemental composition. The multivariate analysis also revealed that extensively reared subjects cannot be analytically discriminated from wild subjects.

We present an application of Raman spectroscopy for understanding the chemisorption catalytic processes occurred in impregnated activated carbon used in hydrogen sulfide (H2S) adsorption from biogas. Downstream of an H2S adsorption capacity study, conducted employing commercial carbon at different operating conditions as sorbent in a fixed bed flow reactor, spent carbon samples who returned suitable H2S removal performances were studied by means of Raman spectroscopy. Raman analysis showed that among all the H2S metal impregnates, copper was the chemical responsible for H2S adsorption, since observed Raman spectra exhibited a perfect overlapping with copper sulfide (CuS) signature. A further confirmation was given by a thermal decomposition test conducted through the Raman optical apparatus over an H2S-exposed carbon sample, by estimating anti-Stokes and Stokes Raman processes relative efficiency. Raman results turned out to be consistent with thermogravimetry tests results executed over the same spent carbon samples. The experiment witnesses the capability of Raman spectroscopy to determinate the chemical nature of compounds resulting from H2S adsorption, overcoming the lack in chemical information encountered by elemental techniques such as energy-dispersive X-ray. We thus propose Raman spectroscopy as a way to integrate traditional chemical investigation procedures.

Drug resistance is one of the major obstacles to a successful treatment of cancer and, in turn, has been recognized to be linked to intratumoral heterogeneity, which increases the probability of the emergence of cancer clones refractory to treatment. Combination therapies have been introduced to overcome resistance, but the design of successful combined protocols is still an open problem. In order to provide some indications on the effectiveness of medical treatments, a mathematical model is proposed, comprising two cancer populations competing for resources and with different susceptibilities to the action of immune system cells and therapies: the focus is on the effects of chemotherapy and immunotherapy, used singularly or in combination. First, numerical predictions of the model have been tested with experimental data from the literature and next therapeutic protocols with different doses and temporal order have been simulated. Finally the role of competitive interactions has been also investigated, to provide some insights on the role of competitive interactions among cancer clones in determining treatment outcomes.

Quantum chemistry is nowadays a term referring to a wide set of theoretical frameworks and models mainly relying on non-relativistic quantum mechanics. While, in most cases, the picture of the molecular structure and of the chemical reality provided by non-relativistic quantum chemistry is appropriate, we live in a universe with a finite speed of light. While neglecting variation of mass and velocity in the interaction of electrons and atomic nuclei is often safe, this is no more the case when heavy atoms are involved. In the present paper, we will briefly review the most rigorous way to include relativity in the modeling of molecular systems, that is to use the full 4-component (4c) formalism derived from the Dirac equation. Specifically, we will review the implementation that has been carried out in an effective 4c code called BERTHA. A recently developed method to gain deep insights into chemical bond is also presented and discussed in the 4c Dirac-Kohn-Sham context, the so-called natural orbitals for chemical valence/charge-displacement analysis.

We apply to Michaelis-Menten kinetics an alternative approach to the study of Singularly Perturbed Differential Equations, that is based on the Renormalization Group (SPDERG). To this aim, we first rebuild the perturbation expansion for Michaelis-Menten kinetics, beyond the standard Quasi-Steady-State Approximation (sQSSA), determining the 2nd order contributions to the inner solutions, that are presented here for the first time to our knowledge. Our main result is that the SPDERG 2nd order uniform approximations reproduce the numerical solutions of the original problem in a better way than the known results of the perturbation expansion, even in the critical matching region. Indeed, we obtain analytical results nearly indistinguishable from the numerical solutions of the original problem in a large part of the whole relevant time window, even in the case in which the kinetic constants produce an expansion parameter value as large as ɛ=0.5.

Fungicides and, for the first time, microalgal phenolic extracts (MPE) from Spirulina sp. and Nannochloropsis sp. were applied on maize culture media under field conditions to evaluate their ability to minimize Fusarium species development and fumonisin production. An in vitro assay against F. verticillioides was carried out using maize grains as the culture medium. An open-field experiment was carried out in Northwest Italy under natural infection conditions. The compared treatments were factorial combinations of two insecticide treatments (an untreated control and pyrethroid, used against European Corn Borer), four antifungal treatments (an untreated control, MPE from Spirulina sp., MPE from Nannochloropsis sp., and a synthetic fungicide), and two timings of the application of the antifungal compounds (at maize flowering and at the milk stage). The MPE compounds were capable of inhibiting fumonisin production in vitro more efficiently than tebuconazole. Insecticide application reduced the infection by Fusarium species and subsequent fumonisin contamination. However, fumonisins in maize fields were not significantly controlled by either fungicide or MPE application.

Treating wines with cation exchange resins allows the reduction of pH and contributes to limiting the formation of tartrate salts by exchanging cations such as potassium with hydrogen ions. This manuscript summarizes the results of a series of laboratory and winery-scale trials performed with the aim of evaluating the ion exchange process and its effects on the chemical composition of the treated samples. The laboratory-scale results showed that both the procedure employed for the activation of resins and the chemical composition of the wines affected the extent of the chemical changes occurring during the treatment. As such, the winery-scale trials showed that the resin-treated wines have significantly lower pH, higher total acidity, less tartrate formation (measured by weight), and a reduced amount of most metals analyzed. Wine samples blended with approximately 20% of cation exchange-treated samples (by volume) showed no signs of tartrate instability when assessed by a quick qualitative cold test.

Galdieria is a photosynthetic unicellular protist, inhabiting thermoacidic environments around the world. The synchronicity of these thermoacidophilic algae with their extreme habitats makes them unable to thrive in different ecological conditions. The genetic structure of Galdieria populations has not yet been studied. In this report, the level of genetic diversity and struc- ture of five Galdieria populations from Iceland were assessed through both random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers, and a partial calmodulin gene fragment (previously used to assess the population structure of these extremophilic algae). The level of population differentiation from both the RAPD and CaM markers was estimated using PLP, percentage of polymorphic loci; H, the expected heterozygosity; I, Shannon’s information index, Ks, Kst. The migration ability of the Galdieria populations was suggested by the high level of genetic variations scored within each Galdieria population and by the small number of polymorphisms detected between the different Icelandic populations. The low genetic diversity between the two species was highlighted by RAPD and calmodulin markers, suggesting for the first time an interspecific genetic flow between species as strategy to evolve in stressful environments. Measurement of antioxidant properties in plant-derived compounds requires appropriate methods that address the mechanism of antioxidant activity and focus on the kinetics of the reactions involving the antioxidants. Methods based on inhibited autoxidations are the most suited for chain-breaking antioxidants and for termination-enhancing antioxidants, while different specific studies are needed for preventive antioxidants. A selection of chemical testing methods is critically reviewed, highlighting their advantages and limitations and discussing their usefulness to investigate both pure molecules and raw extracts. The influence of the reaction medium on antioxidants' performance is also addressed.

Is it possible to perceive others' mental states? Are mental states visible in others' behavior? In contrast to the traditional view that mental states are hidden and not directly accessible to perception, in recent years a phenomenologically-motivated account of social cognition has emerged: direct social perception. However, despite numerous published articles that both defend and critique direct perception, researchers have made little progress in articulating the conditions under which direct perception of others' mental states is possible. This paper proposes an empirically anchored approach to the observability of others' mentality - not just in the weak sense of discussing relevant empirical evidence for and against the phenomenon of interest, but also, and more specifically, in the stronger sense of identifying an experimental strategy for measuring the observability of mental states and articulating the conditions under which mental states are observable. We conclude this article by reframing the problem of direct perception in terms of establishing a definable and measurable relationship between movement features and perceived mental states.

Mimimal models of coordinated behavior of populations living in the same environment are introduced for the cases when they either both gain by mutual interactions, or one hunts the other one, or finally when they compete with each other. The equilibria of the systems are analysed, showing that in some cases the populations may both disappear. Coexistence leads to global asymptotic stability for symbiotic populations, or to Hopf bifurcations for predator-prey systems. Finally, a new very interesting phenomenon is discovered in the competition case: tristability may be achieved showing that the principle of competitive exclusion fails in this case. Indeed either one of the competing populations may thrive, but also the case of populations coexistence is allowed, for the same set of parameter values.

Both high-resolution magic-angle-spinning (HRMAS) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) NMR spectroscopies were applied here to identify the changes of metabolome, morphology, and structural properties induced in seeds (caryopses) of maize plants grown at field level under either mineral or compost fertilization in combination with the inoculation by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). The metabolome of intact caryopses was examined by HRMAS-NMR, while the morphological aspects, endosperm properties and seed water distribution were investigated by MRI. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to evaluate 1H CPMG (Carr-Purcel-Meiboom-Gill) HRMAS spectra as well as several MRI-derived parameters ( T1, T2, and self-diffusion coefficients) of intact maize caryopses. PCA score-plots from spectral results indicated that both seeds metabolome and structural properties depended on the specific field treatment undergone by maize plants. Our findings show that a combination of multivariate statistical analyses with advanced and nondestructive NMR techniques, such as HRMAS and MRI, enables the evaluation of the effects induced on maize caryopses by different fertilization and management practices at field level. The spectroscopic approach adopted here may become useful for the objective appraisal of the quality of seeds produced under a sustainable agriculture.

Abamectin has been proven to be effective in controlling root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.). In vitro and pot experiments were conducted to test the effects of Tervigo and two new abamectin-based products (CHA 2061-02 EW and CHA 2080 SC), emulsion-water (EW) and liquid suspension-concentrate (SC) formulations, at different doses on M.incognita. The activity of the EW abamectin formulations were tested alone and in combination with indolebutyric acid® (IBA), to assess the effect of the products applied as a soil drench to tomato planted in sterilized and naturally nematode-infested soils. In vitro, both Tervigo and CHA 2061-02 EW products mainly showed a nematostatic activity against second-stage juveniles (J2s) of M. incognita. For the most part, J2s that were immobilized following exposure to these products, after rinsing and transfer to water resumed mobility over time. Both formulations were also effective in vivo for the control of M. incognita-infested tomato plants. No visual symptoms of phytotoxicity were detected for either of the products. Root applications of CHA 2061-02 EW plus the addition of IBA improved overall plant growth, but not nematode control. Results demonstrated that both abamectin formulations have the potential for nematode control in tomato production. Additionally, the combination with IBA could be useful to enhance plant growth, in short-term production cycles or when nematode population densities are relatively low. Tested Abamectin-based products may be used for M. incognita management programs.
