Context: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of 8-week ballistic-strength-training program using a validated specific throwing device (ie, Arm/Shoulder Specific Strength Device), on isokinetic shoulders' rotation muscle-torques and ratios as well as range of motion in team handball players. Design: A repeated-measures experimental design with a randomized controlled trial was used. Methods: Twenty-six high-level competitive male U-19 team handball players were randomly assigned into training (TG, n = 15) and control (n = 11) groups. The TG undertook a twice a week for 8-week periodized throws program with an individually predetermined optimal load. The program incorporated shackled eccentric and concentric exercises using the Arm/Shoulder Specific Strength Device. Peak torques, functional, and conventional ratios for both arms at different angular velocities (60°·s−1, 180°·s−1, and 300°·s−1) were assessed over time and between groups, using an isokinetic dynamometer. Results: A significant improvement for TG (P <.01; d = 1.13 [moderate]; +20.2%) of the concentric peak torques for dominant arm in external rotation was observed at 300°·s−1. Significant (P <.05–.01) increases were also noted for nondominant arm at the 3 studied angular velocities. In addition, 300°·s−1 eccentric peak torques of the dominant arm and nondominant arm have significantly improved for both external and internal rotations (P <.05; d =.99 [moderate] and d = 1.21 [large]; +15.7% and + 17.9%, respectively) with small changes at the other angular assessed velocities. Posttraining, TG's dominant arm showed significant improvements (P <.05–.01) in functional and conventional ratios at all velocities. Notably, significant differences (P <.05–.01) were observed at 60°·s−1 and across all velocities when comparing the TG with the control group. TG showed significant increase for internal rotation and external rotation shoulder range of motions (P <.05; d = 1.22–1.27 [large]), +5.0% and +7.7%, respectively). Conclusions: The specific 8-week throwing training program on the Arm/Shoulder Specific Strength Device showed significant performance improvements in almost all assessed isokinetic concentric and eccentric peak torques as well as internal and external range of motion increase for both arms while ensuring rotator cuff torque ratios and shoulder mobility in team handball real sport-specific condition. While studies on the sublethal effects of chemical residues in beeswax on adult honey bees are increasing, the study protocols assessing the impacts on honey bee brood in realistic conditions still need to be investigated. Moreover, little is known about the residue's effect on gene expression in honey bee brood. This study reports the effects of chlorpyriphos-ethyl, acrinathrin and stearin worker pupae exposure through contaminated or adulterated beeswax on the gene expression of some key health indicators, using a novel in vivo realistic model. Larvae were reared in acrinathrin (12.5, 25, 10 and 100 ppb) and chlorpyriphos-ethyl (5, 10, 500 and 5000 ppb) contaminated or stearin adulterated beeswax (3, 4, 5, 6 and 9%) in newly formed colonies to reduce the influence of external factors. On day 11, mortality rates were assessed. Honey bee pupae were extracted from the comb after 19 days of rearing and were analysed for the gene expression profile of four genes involved in the immune response to pathogens and environmental stress factors (Imd, dorsal, domeless and defensin), and two genes involved in detoxifications mechanisms (CYP6AS14 and CYP9Q3). We found no linear relation between the increase in the pesticide concentrations and the brood mortality rates, unlike stearin where an increase in stearin percentage led to an exponential increase in brood mortality. The immune system of pupae raised in acrinathrin contaminated wax was triggered and the expression of CYP6AS14 was significantly upregulated (exposure to 12.5 and 25 ppb). Almost all expression levels of the tested immune and detoxification genes were down-regulated when pupae were exposed to chlorpyrifos-contaminated wax. The exposure to stearin triggered the immune system and detoxification system of the pupae. The identification of substance-specific response factors might ultimately serve to identify molecules that are safer for bees and the ecosystem's health.

Abstract Catheter-related infections (CRI) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in chronic hemodialysis (HD) patients. In this paper, we share our experience with CRI in HD patients. We recorded 49 cases of CRI among 167 patients during a period of 40 months (January 2018–April 2021). The incidence of CRI was 3.7 per 1000 catheter-days. The revealing symptoms were dominated by fever or chills (90%). Inflammatory signs were observed in 74% of cases with respectively concurrent exit-site (51%) and tunnel infection (6%). The biological inflammatory syndrome was found in 74% of patients (average CRP level = 198.9 mg/l). Blood cultures were performed in all cases and were positive in 65% of cases. Thirteen patients have been diagnosed with Infection complications, which were respectively infective endocarditis in 7 cases, septic arthritis in 3 cases, infective myositis in one case, cerebral thrombophlebitis in 1 case and mediastinitis in 1 case. The death occurred in eleven patients, it was due to septic shock in 9 cases, pulmonary embolism in one case and neurologic alterations related to cerebral thrombophlebitis. In 2019, the Swiss canton of Vaud launched a new digital education format for all levels, from kindergarten to high school, that closely combines IT and social sciences. In this experience report, we present the model that inspired it, the conceptual references to which it is linked, many examples of its implementation and the conditions under which it was carried out. The model is pluralistic in that it combines several pedagogical aims: understanding algorithms as a principle of modularity in problem processing, understanding the historical and contemporary socio-technical environments in which they are deployed, engaging in delegation decisions to machines at various levels, engaging in ethical self-regulation of these choices. Within this framework, a variant of the model focusing on ecological issues is presented.

Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the value of routine screening for renal damage in cases of B viral infection, by looking for proteinuria and elevated creatinemia. Materials & methods: We investigate the frequency and associated factors of renal impairment in patients with viral B hepatopathy. Results: Pathological albuminuria was confirmed in 44.73%. The chronic kidney disease with slightly decreased filtration rate was found in 21.05%. In multivariate analysis, only BMI was an independent factor for pathological albuminuria (p = 0.013) and only age was an independent predictor of chronic kidney disease (p = 0.056). Conclusion: Urine dipstick and creatinemia are useful for routine screening in viral B hepatopathy especially in the elderly and overweight.

Welding is widely used in the aerospace, naval and automotive industries. Since high temperatures are involved in this process, solid state metallurgical changes are expected. These metallurgical changes can induce deformations and residual stresses in welded parts. The objective of this work is to develop a finite element calculation code, under the MATLAB environment, to predict the evolution of the various metallurgical transformations during TIG welding of C50 steel plates. In the proposed calculation procedure, we used Leblond’s equation and Waeckel’s model to characterize the metallurgical transformations during respectively heating and cooling stage. We also taken into account the effect of austenitic grain size on metallurgical transformations evolution. Thermal properties are introduced according temperature and phase proportions present during welding operation. Simulation results show that the metallurgical structure in the heat affected zone (HAZ) is largely related to welding thermal power and the plate preheating temperature. We compared simulation results to experimental measurements and the efficiency of the developed computational code was confirmed.

AbstractThis study proposes an intelligent educational decision support system that empowers instructional designers to evaluate online educational contents in order to improve their design and effectiveness. The key challenge in developing it lies in automating and objectifying the evaluation process. To address this, the study pursues two main objectives. The first one is to propose a Multicriteria Approach for Learning Experience Analysis (MALEA) on which we have based the evaluation through the learners’ traces. The second objective consists of proposing the Approach for Content Success Prediction (ACSP), which can be used to evaluate educational content before its deployment. ACSP combines logistic regression and MALEA. This combination helps to guard against the possible imprecision of human judgment affecting the decision-making process. A case study is conducted and proves that the system meets the objective sought and thus is retained for online educational content evaluation. Results are promising with high values of precision, accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity. Different perspectives are finally proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract MAIT cells have been shown to be activated upon several viral infections in a TCR-independent manner by responding to inflammatory cytokines secreted by antigen-presenting cells. Recently, a few studies have shown a similar activation of MAIT cells in response to severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. In this study, we investigate the effect of SARS-CoV-2 infection on the frequency and phenotype of MAIT cells by flow cytometry, and we test in vitro stimulation conditions on the capacity to enhance or rescue the antiviral function of MAIT cells from patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Our study, in agreement with recently published studies, confirmed the decline in MAIT cell frequency of hospitalized donors in comparison to healthy donors. MAIT cells of COVID-19 patients also had lower expression levels of TNF-alpha, perforin and granzyme B upon stimulation with IL-12 + IL-18. 24 h’ incubation with IL-7 successfully restored perforin expression levels in COVID-19 patients. Combined, our findings support the growing evidence that SARS-CoV-2 is dysregulating MAIT cells and that IL-7 treatment might improve their function, rendering them more effective in protecting the body against the virus.
