27. Enhanced Coke Gasification Activity of the Mn1.5Cr1.5O4Spinel Catalyst during Coking in Ethylene–Steam Mixtures

Abstract

Mn–Cr–O spinel catalysts (MnCr2O4and Mn1.5Cr1.5O4) and single oxides of Mn and Cr are coked under ethylene and ethylene–steam mixtures to simulate reaction conditions occurring in steam cracker furnaces. The coking rates are measured using thermogravimetric analysis, and the Mn1.5Cr1.5O4catalyst displayed considerably less coke deposition (an order of magnitude) under ethylene–steam flow. Analysis of the outlet gas flow suggests the Mn1.5Cr1.5O4catalyst gasified the radically formed coke into carbon oxides without significantly affecting ethylene conversion. The anticoking performance of the Mn1.5Cr1.5O4catalyst is attributed to the presence of Mn3+species in the spinel phase structure that are active for coke gasification in the presence of steam. No significant changes in structure or performance are observed for the Mn1.5Cr1.5O4catalyst across several coking and decoking cycles. The Mn–Cr–O spinel oxide with higher Mn content is suggested to have desirable activity and stability to limit coke deposition during steam cracking.

Abstract

A CeO2/α‐Al2O3 bilayer was coated on a high temperature alloy (Incoloy 800H) by sol–gel dip‐coating and was evaluated for its potential as an anticoking barrier and coke oxidation catalyst. The bilayer effectively functioned as a barrier to metal surface catalyzed coking. The film prevented filamentous catalytic coking via blocking surface active metallic sites on the Incoloy substrate. Furthermore, the bilayer reduced the oxidation temperature of pyrolytic coke deposited on the film surface as compared to a bare oxidized Incoloy substrate, mostly owing to the oxidation catalytic activity of the CeO2 layer. Finally, it is demonstrated that the presence of the α‐Al2O3 buffer layer is critically important to the overall performance. Without the α‐Al2O3 layer, a CeO2 layer nearly completely lost both its barrier and oxidation catalytic functions. It is presumed that metallic species migrating from the substrate during high temperature treatments are responsible for the CeO2 deactivation, likely by blocking catalytic sites on the CeO2 surface. © 2018 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 64: 4019–4026, 2018 [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Reaction pathways for higher alcohol synthesis from syngas are studied over K/MoS2domains supported on mesoporous carbon (C) and mixed MgAl oxide (MMO) viaaddition of methanol, ethanol, and ethylene co-feeds. A methanol co-feed results in an increase in ethanol and methane production for the catalysts studied. Ethanol or ethylene co-feeds yield increased C3+OH and C2+HC over the supported catalysts. No change is observed in the product distribution over K/bulk-MoS2with an ethanol co-feed, but 1-propanol production significantly increases in the presence of ethylene, suggesting the formation of ethyl species from ethanol and/or the adsorption of ethanol are rate-controlling for 1-propanol formation when ethanol is co-fed. Ethylene and ethanol co-feeds yield similar production rates of C3+OH over the MMO catalyst, indicating that alcohol formation likely proceeds primarily viathe same acyl intermediate as olefin carbonylation. Supports do seem to have an important influence on the reaction pathways. Specifically, acidic carbon support seems to facilitate alcohol dehydration/hydrogenation to produce alkanes, while MMO influences methanol plus 1-propanol coupling to form isobutyl alcohol. However, Mo–K–MMO sites are key for superior normalized C3+OH productivity with ethanol and ethylene co-feeds over the MMO catalyst.
