Interactions between superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x films and substrates were investigated by ion backscattering, x-ray diffraction, and four-point probe resistivity measurements. During annealing at temperatures above- 800 °C, Bi2Sr2CaCu2 oxide films rapidly reacted with alumina, Si, Si covered with SiO2, and quartz, resulting in catastrophic failure. Zr-based barrier layers were used to minimize film-substrate interactions. When a single ZrO2 layer was interposed between the superconducting oxide film and the underlying substrate, the Bi2Sr2CaCu2 oxide films showed a large-grained polycrystalline microstructure and exhibited the orthorhombic structure. Films on sapphire showed transitions to the superconducting state beginning near 100 K with zero resistance achieved at 70 K. Films on Si and thermally grown SiO2 showed a similar drop in resistance around 95 K, whereas the transition was broad and the zero resistance state was not reached. For films on quartz, high thermal stress caused cracking of the superconducting oxide film. Best results were achieved using a barrier composed of a Zr-Si-O mixed layer underneath ZrO2. In this case, the films grown on Si and quartz were uniform and showed the onset to superconductivity at 95 K, attaining zero resistance at 70 K. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The primary objective of this research was to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of "Supper Heroes", a superhero-themed mobile health (mHealth) intervention designed to reduce food waste and increase plant-based protein food intake among families with children aged 9-14 in Ontario, Canada. A single arm, pre-post mixed methods design was used to evaluate the intervention. The 4-month mHealth intervention included 7 online modules with infographics, videos, and activities to help families reduce their food waste and eat more plant-based protein foods. Feasibility was assessed using website analytics to monitor intervention completion and attrition. Acceptability was assessed at post-intervention using online surveys of parents and children, and in-depth interviews with parents. 23 out of 30 families (77%) were retained from pre-to post-intervention; 33 parents (22 mothers, 10 fathers; and 1 parent who did not disclose their gender) completed the pre-intervention and post-intervention surveys and 33 children (16 girls; 15 boys; 1 child who did not disclose their gender; and 1 non-binary child) completed the post-intervention surveys. Most parents (95% of mothers and 100% of fathers) and children (88%) reported that they were satisfied or highly satisfied with the intervention. Overall, the intervention was feasible and well-accepted by parents and children. A randomized, controlled trial among a larger sample is recommended to further evaluate intervention impacts. Introduction: Obesity is a major health concern in every US age group. Approximately one in 4 children in Arizona's Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children is overweight or obese. The Arizona Department of Health Services developed the Empower program to promote healthy environments in licensed child care facilities. The program consists of 10 standards, including one standard for each of these 5 areas: physical activity and screen time, breastfeeding, fruit juice and water, family-style meals, and staff training. The objective of this evaluation was to determine the level of implementation of these 5 Empower standards., Methods: A self-assessment survey was completed from July 2013 through June 2015 by 1,850 facilities to evaluate the level of implementation of 5 Empower standards. We calculated the percentage of facilities that reported the degree to which they implemented each standard and identified common themes in comments recorded in the survey., Results: All facilities reported either full or partial implementation of the 5 standards. Of 1,678 facilities, 21.7% (n = 364) reported full implementation of all standards, and 78.3% (n = 1,314) reported at least partial implementation. Staff training, which has only one component, had the highest level of implementation: 77.4% (n = 1,299) reported full implementation. Only 44.0% (n = 738) reported full implementation of the standard on a breastfeeding-friendly environment., Conclusion: Arizona child care facilities have begun to implement the Empower program, but facilities will need more education, technical assistance, and support in some areas to fully implement the program.

Medical complications after elective bunionectomy procedures are rarely encountered. This paper presents a case report of a healthy 51-year-old male patient who experienced transient bradycardia and asystole postoperatively after bilateral bunionectomies. The foot surgeon must be prepared for, be able to recognize, and then treat these untoward medical events.

The authors recommend the procedure described above specifically for children with congenital or acquired subluxation or dislocation of the peroneal tendons, but they advise against using this procedure alone when calcaneovalgus deformity is present and anterior dislocation of the peroneal tendons occurs as a result of spasticity. It may, however, have a place as part of a combined procedure to correct the spastic deformity. Reconstruction of the superior peroneal retinaculum is accomplished with a strong ligamentous structure, appropriately oriented and directed, without loss of lateral ankle stability. The authors believe that the complication of partial or complete fibular physeal arrest can be avoided, and that redislocation of the peroneal tendons as the child grows out of the repair can be eliminated. Therefore, this procedure is suggested as the procedure of choice for a growing child with anterior luxation or dislocation of the peroneal tendons and an intact calcaneofibular ligament. Properly performed, it will enable these children to return to the vigorous physical activity they desire.

A traveling wave CS(2) Kerr cell has been used to shape optical pulses at 1.06 microm. The rise time of ~20 psec reported here is possiile because the group velocities for electrical and optical pulses are equal in CS(2) at 1.06 microm. An electrical pulse generated by a light activated semiconductor switch is used to drive the device. High contrast jitter-free operation appears to be possible.
