This research introduces a novel application of a masked Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) algorithm from the field of deep reinforcement learning (RL), for determining the most efficient sequence of space debris visitation, utilizing the Lambert solver as per Izzo's adaptation for individual rendezvous. The aim is to optimize the sequence in which all the given debris should be visited to get the least total time for rendezvous for the entire mission. A neural network (NN) policy is developed, trained on simulated space missions with varying debris fields. After training, the neural network calculates approximately optimal paths using Izzo's adaptation of Lambert maneuvers. Performance is evaluated against standard heuristics in mission planning. The reinforcement learning approach demonstrates a significant improvement in planning efficiency by optimizing the sequence for debris rendezvous, reducing the total mission time by an average of approximately {10.96\%} and {13.66\%} compared to the Genetic and Greedy algorithms, respectively. The model on average identifies the most time-efficient sequence for debris visitation across various simulated scenarios with the fastest computational speed. Identifying the causal pathways of unfairness is a critical objective in improving policy design and algorithmic decision-making. Prior work in causal fairness analysis often requires knowledge of the causal graph, hindering practical applications in complex or low-knowledge domains. Moreover, global discovery methods that learn causal structure from data can result in unstable performance with finite samples, potentially leading to contradictory fairness conclusions. To mitigate these issues, we introduce local discovery for direct discrimination (LD3): a method that uncovers structural evidence of direct discrimination by identifying the causal parents of an outcome variable. LD3 performs a linear number of conditional independence tests relative to variable set size, and allows for latent confounding under the sufficient condition that no parent of the outcome is latent. We show that LD3 returns a valid adjustment set (VAS) under a new graphical criterion for the weighted controlled direct effect, a qualitative indicator of direct discrimination. LD3 limits unnecessary adjustment, providing interpretable VAS for assessing unfairness. We use LD3 to analyze causal fairness in two complex decision systems: criminal recidivism prediction and liver transplant allocation. LD3 was more time-efficient and returned more plausible results on real-world data than baselines, which took 46x to 5870x longer to execute.

The Black-Scholes option pricing model remains a cornerstone in financial mathematics, yet its application is often challenged by the need for accurate hedging strategies, especially in dynamic market environments. This paper presents a rigorous analysis of hedge errors within the Black-Scholes framework, focusing on the efficacy of finite difference techniques in calculating option sensitivities. Employing an asymptotic approach, we investigate the behavior of hedge errors under various market conditions, emphasizing the implications for risk management and portfolio optimization. Through theoretical analysis and numerical simulations, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method in reducing hedge errors and enhancing the robustness of option pricing models. Our findings provide valuable insights into improving the accuracy of hedging strategies and advancing the understanding of option pricing in financial markets.

Vitrimer is a new, exciting class of sustainable polymers with the ability to heal due to their dynamic covalent adaptive network that can go through associative rearrangement reactions. However, a limited choice of constituent molecules restricts their property space, prohibiting full realization of their potential applications. To overcome this challenge, we couple molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and a novel graph variational autoencoder (VAE) machine learning model for inverse design of vitrimer chemistries with desired glass transition temperature (Tg) and synthesize a novel vitrimer polymer. We build the first vitrimer dataset of one million chemistries and calculate Tg on 8,424 of them by high-throughput MD simulations calibrated by a Gaussian process model. The proposed novel VAE employs dual graph encoders and a latent dimension overlapping scheme which allows for individual representation of multi-component vitrimers. By constructing a continuous latent space containing necessary information of vitrimers, we demonstrate high accuracy and efficiency of our framework in discovering novel vitrimers with desirable Tg beyond the training regime. To validate the effectiveness of our framework in experiments, we generate novel vitrimer chemistries with a target Tg = 323 K. By incorporating chemical intuition, we synthesize a vitrimer with Tg of 311-317 K, and experimentally demonstrate healability and flowability. The proposed framework offers an exciting tool for polymer chemists to design and synthesize novel, sustainable vitrimer polymers for a facet of applications.

Machine learning algorithms have grown in sophistication over the years and are increasingly deployed for real-life applications. However, when using machine learning techniques in practical settings, particularly in high-risk applications such as medicine and engineering, obtaining the failure probability of the predictive model is critical. We refer to this problem as the risk-assessment task. We focus on regression algorithms and the risk-assessment task of computing the probability of the true label lying inside an interval defined around the model's prediction. We solve the risk-assessment problem using the conformal prediction approach, which provides prediction intervals that are guaranteed to contain the true label with a given probability. Using this coverage property, we prove that our approximated failure probability is conservative in the sense that it is not lower than the true failure probability of the ML algorithm. We conduct extensive experiments to empirically study the accuracy of the proposed method for problems with and without covariate shift. Our analysis focuses on different modeling regimes, dataset sizes, and conformal prediction methodologies.

Electronics are integral to modern life; however, at their end-of-life these devices produce environmentally hazardous electronic waste (e-waste). Recycling the ubiquitous printed circuit boards (PCBs) that make up a substantial mass and volume fraction of e-waste is challenging due to their use of irreversibly cured thermoset epoxies. We present a PCB formulation using transesterification vitrimers (vPCBs), and an end-to-end fabrication process compatible with standard manufacturing ecosystems. We create functional prototypes of IoT devices transmitting 2.4 GHz radio signals on vPCBs with electrical and mechanical properties meeting industry standards. Fractures and holes in vPCBs can be repaired while retaining comparable performance over more than four repair cycles. We further demonstrate non-destructive decomposition of transesterification vitrimer composites with solid inclusions and metal attachments by polymer swelling with small molecule solvents. We hypothesize that unlike traditional solvolysis recycling, swelling does not degrade the materials. Through dynamic mechanical analysis we find negligible catalyst loss, minimal changes in storage modulus, and equivalent polymer backbone composition across multiple recycling cycles. We achieve 98% polymer recovery, 100% fiber recovery, and 91% solvent recovery which we reuse to create new vPCBs without degraded performance. Artificial intelligence methods including deep neural networks (DNN) can provide rapid molecular classification of tumors from routine histology with accuracy that matches or exceeds human pathologists. Discerning how neural networks make their predictions remains a significant challenge, but explainability tools help provide insights into what models have learned when corresponding histologic features are poorly defined. Here, we present a method for improving explainability of DNN models using synthetic histology generated by a conditional generative adversarial network (cGAN). We show that cGANs generate high-quality synthetic histology images that can be leveraged for explaining DNN models trained to classify molecularly-subtyped tumors, exposing histologic features associated with molecular state. Fine-tuning synthetic histology through class and layer blending illustrates nuanced morphologic differences between tumor subtypes. Finally, we demonstrate the use of synthetic histology for augmenting pathologist-in-training education, showing that these intuitive visualizations can reinforce and improve understanding of histologic manifestations of tumor biology.

The 2022 Russia Ukraine War has led to many sanctions being placed on Russia and Ukraine. The paper will discuss the impact the 2022 Russian Sanctions have on agricultural food prices and hunger. The paper also uses Instrumental Variable Analysis to find how Cryptocurrency and Bitcoin can be used to hedge against the impact of sanctions. The 6 different countries analyzed in this study including Bangladesh, El Salvador, Iran, Nigeria, Philippines, and South Africa, all of which are heavy importers of wheat and corn. The paper shows that although Bitcoin may be volatile compared to other local currencies, it might be a good investment to safeguard assets since it is not correlated with commodity prices.Furthermore, the study demonstrates that transaction volume has a strong relationship with prices.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a practical and noninvasive measure of autonomic nervous system activity, which plays an essential role in cardiovascular health. However, using HRV to assess physiology status is challenging. Even in clinical settings, HRV is sensitive to acute stressors such as physical activity, mental stress, hydration, alcohol, and sleep. Wearable devices provide convenient HRV measurements, but the irregularity of measurements and uncaptured stressors can bias conventional analytical methods. To better interpret HRV measurements for downstream healthcare applications, we learn a personalized diurnal rhythm as an accurate physiological indicator for each individual. We develop Physiological Multitask-Learning (PhysioMTL) by harnessing Optimal Transport theory within a Multitask-learning (MTL) framework. The proposed method learns an individual-specific predictive model from heterogeneous observations, and enables estimation of an optimal transport map that yields a push forward operation onto the demographic features for each task. Our model outperforms competing MTL methodologies on unobserved predictive tasks for synthetic and two real-world datasets. Specifically, our method provides remarkable prediction results on unseen held-out subjects given only $20\%$ of the subjects in real-world observational studies.
