Abstract

In this paper, we consider the semiclassical 2D magnetic Schrödinger operator in the case where the magnetic field vanishes along a smooth closed curve. Assuming that this curve has an axis of symmetry, we prove that semiclassical tunneling occurs. 2. Whispering gallery modes for a transmission problem.

Abstract

We construct a specific family of eigenfunctions for a Laplace operator with coefficients having a jump across an interface. These eigenfunctions have an exponential concentration arbitrarily close to the interface, and therefore could be considered as whispering gallery modes. The proof is based on an appropriate Agmon estimate. Abstract

We prove quantitative spectral inequalities for the (anisotropic) Shubin operators and the Grushin operator on the whole Euclidean space, thus relating for functions from spectral subspaces associated to finite energy intervals their $L^2$-norm on the whole space to the $L^2$-norm on a suitable subset. A particular feature of our estimates is that the constant relating these $L^2$-norms is very explicit in geometric parameters of the corresponding subset of the whole space. While these subsets may be thick (i.e. relatively dense) in the classical sense in the case of the Grushin operator, they may become sparse at infinity for the Shubin operators and may even have finite measure. The latter extends results obtained recently by J. Martin and, in the particular case of the harmonic oscillator, by A. Dicke, I. Veselić, and the second author. We apply our results towards null-controllability of the associated (degenerate) parabolic equations, as well as to the ones associated to the Baouendi-Grushin operators acting on $\mathbb R^d\times\mathbb T^d$.

4. The tunneling effect for a class of difference operators.

Abstract

We analyze a general class of self-adjoint difference operators on , where is a multi-well potential and is a small parameter. We give a coherent review of our results on tunneling up to new sharp results on the level of complete asymptotic expansions (see [30-35]).Our emphasis is on general ideas and strategy, possibly of interest for a broader range of readers, and less on detailed mathematical proofs. The wells are decoupled by introducing certain Dirichlet operators on regions containing only one potential well. Then the eigenvalue problem for the Hamiltonian is treated as a small perturbation of these comparison problems. After constructing a Finslerian distance induced by , we show that Dirichlet eigenfunctions decay exponentially with a rate controlled by this distance to the well. It follows with microlocal techniques that the first eigenvalues of converge to the first eigenvalues of the direct sum of harmonic oscillators on located at several wells. In a neighborhood of one well, we construct formal asymptotic expansions of WKB-type for eigenfunctions associated with the low-lying eigenvalues of . These are obtained from eigenfunctions or quasimodes for the operator , acting on , via restriction to the lattice . Tunneling is then described by a certain interaction matrix, similar to the analysis for the Schrödinger operator (see [22]), the remainder is exponentially small and roughly quadratic compared with the interaction matrix. We give weighted -estimates for the difference of eigenfunctions of Dirichlet-operators in neighborhoods of the different wells and the associated WKB-expansions at the wells. In the last step, we derive full asymptotic expansions for interactions between two 'wells' (minima) of the potential energy, in particular for the discrete tunneling effect. Here we essentially use analysis on phase space, complexified in the momentum variable. These results are as sharp as the classical results for the Schrödinger operator in [22]. Abstract

We consider the anisotropic Shubin operators $(-\Delta)^m + \vert x\vert^{2k}$ acting on the space $L^2(\mathbb R^n)$, with $k, m \geq1$ some positive integers. We provide sharp quantitative estimates in Gelfand-Shilov spaces for the eigenfunctions of these selfadjoint differential operators, that is, exponential decay estimates both for these functions and their Fourier transforms in $L^2(\mathbb R^n)$. The strategy implemented is based on the classical approach to obtain Agmon estimates in spectral theory. By using a Weyl law for the eigenvalues of the anisotropic Shubin operators, we also describe the smoothing properties of the semigroups generated by the fractional powers of these operators, with precise estimates in short times. This description allows us to prove positive null-controllability results for the associated evolution equations posed on the whole space $\mathbb R^n$, from control supports which are thick with respect to densities and in any positive time. We generalize in particular results known for the evolution equations associated with fractional harmonic oscillators.

Abstract

We study the eigenpairs of a model Schrödinger operator with a quadratic potential and Neumann boundary conditions on a half-plane. The potential is degenerate in the sense that it reaches its minimum all along a line that makes the angle θ with the boundary of the half-plane. We show that the first eigenfunctions satisfy localization properties related to the distance to the minimum line of the potential. We investigate the densification of the eigenvalues below the essential spectrum in the limit θ → 0, and we prove a full asymptotic expansion for these eigenvalues and their associated eigenvectors. We conclude the paper by numerical experiments obtained by a finite element method. The numerical results confirm and enlighten the theoretical approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; We establish exponential bounds on the Ginzburg-Landau order parameter away from the curve where the applied magnetic field vanishes. In the units used in this paper, the estimates are valid when the parameter measuring the strength of the applied magnetic field is comparable with the Ginzburg-Landau parameter. This completes a previous work by the authors analyzing the case when this strength was much higher. Our results display the distribution of surface and bulk superconductivity and are valid under the assumption that the magnetic field is Hölder continuous.

Abstract

International audience; This paper is devoted to the semiclassical magnetic Laplacian. Until now WKB expansions for the eigenfunctions were only established in presence of a non-zero electric potential. Here we tackle the pure magnetic case. Thanks to Feynman-Hellmann type formulas and coherent states decomposition, we develop here a magnetic Born-Oppenheimer theory. Exploiting the multiple scales of the problem, we are led to solve an effective eikonal equation in pure magnetic cases and to obtain WKB expansions. We also investigate explicit examples for which we can improve our general theorem: global WKB expansions, quasi-optimal estimates of Agmon and upper bound of the tunelling effect (in symmetric cases). We also apply our strategy to get more accurate descriptions of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions in a wide range of situations analyzed in the last two decades.

When the two electric wells are connected by two geodesics for the Agmon distance, we highlight an oscillating factor (related to the circulation of the magnetic field) in the splitting estimate of the first two eigenvalues.

International audience; The plane waveguides with corners considered here are infinite V-shaped strips with constant thickness. They are parametrized by their sole opening angle. We study the eigenpairs of the Dirichlet Laplacian in such domains when this angle tends to $0$. We provide multi-scale asymptotics for eigenpairs associated with the lowest eigenvalues. For this, we investigate the eigenpairs of a one-dimensional model which can be viewed as their Born-Oppenheimer approximation. We also investigate the Dirichlet Laplacian on triangles with sharp angles. The eigenvalue asymptotics involve powers of the cube root of the angle, while the eigenvector asymptotics include simultaneously two scales in the triangular part, and one scale in the straight part of the guides.

We explain how we can construct quasi-eigenpairs and how the investigation of the magnetic Laplacian can be reduced to the one of model operators. Abstract

International audience; We study the eigenpairs of a model Schrödinger operator with a quadratic potential and Neumann boundary conditions on a half-plane. The potential is degenerate in the sense that it reaches its minimum all along a line which makes the angle \theta with the boundary of the half-plane. We show that the first eigenfunctions satisfy localization properties related to the distance to the minimum line of the potential. We investigate the densification of the eigenvalues below the essential spectrum in the limit \theta \to 0 and we prove full asymptotic expansion for these eigenvalues and their associated eigenvectors. We conclude the paper by numerical experiments obtained by a finite element method. The numerical results confirm and enlighten the theoretical approach.

The main aspect of this work is the analysis of the lowest eigenvalue $\la_1(B,\A)$ of the magnetic Neumann Laplacian with variable magnetic field $(i\nabla+B\A)^2$. More precisely, in 2D, we prove a two terms asymptotics of $\la_1(B,\A)$ when $B$ tends to infinity and we prove localizations results for the attached eigenfunctions. In 3D, we give some uniform spectral estimates for a family of magnetic fields appearing in the liquid crystals theory. We also prove an upper bound (with three terms) for the lowest eigenvalue in the generic case of the variable magnetic field. The other part of this work concerns the analysis of the Landau-de Gennes functional introduced to study the liquid crystals. We prove the existence of a critical tempertaure (when the elastic coefficients become large) which permits to determine if the liquid crystal is nematic or smectic.; Cette thèse est consacrée à deux types de problèmes.Le premier et principal aspect de ce travail concerne l'analyse semi-classique de la plus petite valeur propre $\la_1(B,\A)$ de la réalisation de Neumann de l'opérateur de Schrödinger magnétique $(i\nabla+B\A)^2$ dans le cas où le champ magnétique $\bbeta=\nabla\times\A$ n'est pas uniforme. Plus précisément, en dimension 2, nous établissons un développement asymptotique à deux termes de $\la_1(B,\A)$ lorsque $B$ tend vers l'infini et démontrons simultanément des résultats de localisation pour les premières fonctions propres correspondantes ; pour ce qui est du problème en dimension 3, nous étudions d'une part des estimations uniformes pour une famille de champs magnétiques d'intensité constante (en vue de l'application à une famille spéciale apparaissant à l'occasion de la théorie des cristaux liquides) et d'autre part nous nous plaçons dans des hypothèses génériques sur le champ magnétique et prouvons une majoration qui laisse conjecturer l'expression des deuxième et troisième termes du développement asymptotique.Le deuxième aspect de cette thèse est l'étude de la transition de phase en théorie des cristaux liquides. Nous mettons en évidence une température critique pour la fonctionnelle de Landau-de Gennes qui permet de déterminer, lorsque certains coefficients de la fonctionnelle appelés constantes d'élasticité explosent, la phase dans laquelle se trouve le cristal liquide (nématique ou smectique). Par ailleurs, nous sommes amenés à introduire une nouvelle fonctionnelle (en imposant une condition de Dirichlet non homogène) en vue d'obtenir des informations plus quantitatives.

Abstract

20 pages, 1 figure, AMS-LaTeX.; For all sums of eigenfunctions of a semiclassical Schrödinger operator below some given energy level, this paper proves that the ratio of the L² norm on R^d over the L² norm on any given open set is bounded by exp(C/h) for some positive C in the semiclassical limit h tends to 0. Corresponding estimates on a compact manifold are also given. They generalize the unique continuation estimate of Lebeau, with Jerison, Robbiano and Zuazua, on sums of classical eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on a compact manifold below an eigenvalue threshold as this threshold tends to infinity. The main tools are semiclassical Carleman estimates following Lebeau, Robbiano and Burq with a new semiclassical propagation of smallness argument. For sums of classical Hermite functions, or for sums of classical eigenfunctions of homogeneous polynomial potential wells, similar unique continuation estimates from cones are deduced. They apply to the null-controllability from a cone of the heat semigroups corresponding to these Schrödinger operators, with a sharp cost estimate of fast control, following a new version of the strategy of Lebeau and Robbiano.

Abstract

Superconducting theory, modelized by Ginzburg and Landau, motivates works about Schrödinger operator with magnetic field. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the geometry influence on the superconductivity emergence by extending results for regular domains to domains with corners. Semi-classical analysis leads to deal with three model operators: the Neumann realization of the Schrödinger operator with constant magnetic field in the plane, the half-plane and angular sectors. The study of the two first is well known and we concentrate on the third. After determination of the bottom of the essential spectrum, we show that the bottom of the spectrum is an eigenvalue for a sector with an acute angle. We give an explicit asymptotics of the lowest eigenvalue as the angle tends to 0 and clarify the localization of the ground state using Agmon's techniques. Then we illustrate and estimate the behavior of eigenvectors and eigenvalues thanks to numerical tools based on finite elements method. Due to the ground state localization, the discretized problem is badly conditioned; nevertheless the analysis of the operator properties and of the drawbacks of classical methods lead us to implement a robust and efficient algorithm computing the ground state. To improve numerical results, we construct a posteriori error estimates for this eigenvalue problem and use the mesh-refinement techniques to localize the eigenstate associated to general domains and to study the variation of the bottom of the spectrum according to the angle of the sector., La théorie de la supraconductivité, modélisée par Ginzburg et Landau, motive les travaux relatifs à l'opérateur de Schrödinger avec champ magnétique. L'objet de cette thèse est d'analyser l'influence de la géométrie du domaine sur l'apparition de la supraconductivité en étendant les résultats existant pour des domaines réguliers à des domaines à coins. L'analyse semi-classique conduit à étudier trois opérateurs modèles : la réalisation de Neumann de l'opérateur de Schrödinger avec champ magnétique constant sur le plan, le demi-plan et les secteurs angulaires. L'étude des deux premiers est bien connue et nous nous concentrons sur le dernier. Après avoir déterminé le bas du spectre essentiel, nous montrons que le bas du spectre est une valeur propre pour un secteur d'angle aigu. Nous explicitons le développement limité de la plus petite valeur propre quand l'angle du secteur tend vers 0 et précisons la localisation de l'état fondamental grâce aux techniques d'Agmon. Nous illustrons et estimons ensuite le comportement des vecteurs et valeurs propres à l'aide d'outils numériques basés sur la méthode des éléments finis. La localisation de l'état fondamental rend le problème discret très mal conditionné mais l'analyse des propriétés de l'opérateur et des défauts des méthodes classiques permet malgré tout de mettre en oeuvre un algorithme robuste et efficace calculant l'état fondamental. Afin d'améliorer les résultats numériques, nous construisons des estimateurs a posteriori pour ce problème aux valeurs propres et utilisons les techniques de raffinement de maillages pour localiser l'état propre dans des domaines généraux et étudier la variation du bas du spectre en fonction de l'angle du secteur.
