Abstract

International trade has been favouring the dissemination of a wide suite of invasive alien species. Upstream prevention through the monitoring of entry points is identified as an appropriate strategy to achieve control of bioinvasions and their consequences. Maritime transportation has been responsible for the introduction worldwide of exotic rodents that are major pests for crops and food stocks as well as reservoirs of many zoonotic pathogens. In order to limit further dissemination, the International Health Regulation constrains decisions makers and socio‐economic stakeholders to manage ship‐mediated import/export of rodents within seaports.Unfortunately, eco‐evolutionary insights into rodent introduction events that could guide preventive actions in seaports are very scarce. In order to bridge this gap, we here describe the results of a 3 year‐long survey of small mammals conducted in the Port of Cotonou, Benin.Our aim was to assess the spatiotemporal distribution, diversity and relative abundance of invasive and native rodents.960 small mammal individuals were captured in nine within‐seaport sites. We found (i) a marked predominance of invasive species (84% of the individuals belonging to Mus musculus, Rattus rattus, R. norvegicus), (ii) with native species (i.e. Mastomys natalensis and the shrew Crocidura olivieri) essentially restricted to peripheral non‐industrial areas, as well as (iii) a fine‐scale spatial segregation stable over time between the invasive Norway rats and house mice on the one hand, and the black rats and shrews on the other hand.Furthermore, trapping before and after two successive rodent control campaigns indicates that they were ineffective and that subsequent rodent recolonisation occurred 6–12 months following intervention.Synthesis and applications. Our results are discussed in terms of ecological processes at play (e.g. interspecific interactions) and operational recommendations (e.g. assessment of proper eradication units, environmental modifications). Abstract

Objective: Benin’s most appreciated Amaranthus cruentus L. «local» cultivar is susceptible to saline stress. Molecular diversity and relationships among nineteen gamma-irradiated A. cruentus mutant lines and their relative, the «local» cultivar, were studied to identify the best representative sample of those created mutant lines for further saline tolerance breeding. Methodology and Results: The study was carried out by using a random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) marker. Four RAPD (decamer) arbitrary primers (OPA-02, OPA-08, OPB-05 and OPB-08) out of eleven were able to discriminate all the genotypes sufficiently. Twenty amplicons, all polymorphic, were produced ranging from ~15O bp to ~1200 bp. The mean value of Shannon’s information index calculated for genetic diversity estimation was 0.43, and it ranged from 0.27 to 0.62. The genetic similarity coefficient ranged from 0.00 to 1.00. The sets of mutant lines L3 and L6; L12 and L8; L17 and L20; L13, L17 and L20; L17 and L20 appeared to be genetically similar, clustering together inside at 100 % similarity coefficient. Conclusion and application of findings: Six distinct genotypes (L2, L6, L13, L16, L18 and L23) were identified as representative of the nineteen studied A. cruentus created mutant lines. This finding provides a diversity of materials to be considered for saline or other breeding objective. The current study is one step in a whole process of more productive and saline tolerant A. cruentus varieties’ creation. Mutation and molecular tools used in the current study cleared the way to an effective selection of good source of genes for A. cruentus breeding. The next step will be the saline test on the selected mutant lines to identify the most tolerant genotypes that can thrive despite saline effects and fit farmers’ and consumers’ needs.

Abstract

Benin's waterways are affected by several forms of pollution that are linked in particular to anthropic activities. This study aims to detect the presence of antibiotic residues, the frequency of antibiotic resistant bacteria and the levels of heavy metals in Benin's waterways. 160 surface water samples from streams in Benin were collected. They were filtered by the membrane filtration method, then incubated on different media. The isolated bacterial species were identified by API 20E gallery and specific biochemical tests. After detection of the resistance profile of the latter, the antibiotic residues were quantified in the samples by the ELISA technique on plate and the physicochemical analyses were performed by Multi 3630 IDS SET KS2 multimeter. Finally, heavy metal levels were detected by the MERCK test kit method specific to each metal. The bacterial species mostly identified were Klebsiella pneumoniae (56.59%), Klebsiella spp. (18.68%), Enterobacter spp. (12.63%). The most abundant resistance of bacterial strains was to amoxicillin + clavulanic acid (92%), followed by metronidazole (86%). Metronidazole was the antibiotic with the highest residue concentration in the samples (6.578 to 6.829 µg/L), followed by ciprofloxacin (2.142 to 9.299 µg/L). Benin streams contain heavy metals such as mercury (0.454±0.129 µg/L), lead (0.040±0.50 mg/L), zinc (6.120±16.017 mg/L), nickel (0.155±0.233 mg/L) and cadmium (0.154±0.132 mg/L). The analysis of the physico-chemical parameters showed that, apart from electrical conductivity, all parameters comply with Beninese and World Health Organization standards. Abstract

Summary: Sesame is an oilseed crop and source of income for small-scale farmers, particularly in developing countries. In Benin, sesame production is poorly developed and the underlying reasons are still unknown. In this study, we investigated the sesame management practices, socio-demographic factors and ethnobotanical knowledge associated with sesame production, as well as the production constraints across four agroecological zones in Benin. In total, 370 farmers were surveyed based on a structured interview. Qualitative and quantitative data including socio-demographic parameters, management practices and knowledge associated with the crop, were recorded. A binary logistic regression was performed to explain the effects of socio-demographic parameters on management practices. The farm typology was generated through a principal component analysis followed by a cluster analysis. Cultivars were classified based on the seed coat colour and size. To assess the ethnobotanical knowledge related to sesame, use value, plant part used value and fidelity level were calculated. Our results showed that older farmers were more likely to practice intercropping than young farmers. In addition, male farmers applied more fertilisers and used more pesticide than female. Five distinct farm typologies were recorded in the four agroecological zones. Five different cultivars were recorded across the four agroecological zones. Sesame is mostly produced for local consumption as sauce and seed appetiser (mentioned by at least 73.23% of respondents). The seeds were the most used part of the crop. The lack of improved seeds, road impassability to the field, rarity of rain, non-availability of cultivable land for sesame production, lack of cash for farm operations were the main constraints to wide sesame production. Abstract

Kersting’s groundnut is an important source of protein and essential nutrients that contribute to food security in West Africa. However, the crop is still underexploited by the populations and under-researched by the scientific community. This study aimed to investigate the genetic diversity and population structure of 217 Kersting’s groundnut accessions from five origins using 886 DArTseq markers. Gene diversity was low and ranged from 0.049 to 0.064. The number of private alleles greatly varied among populations (42–192) and morphotypes (40–339). Moderate to very high levels of selfing and inbreeding were observed among populations (s=56–85%, FIS=0.389–0.736) and morphotypes (s=57–82%, FIS=0.400–0.691). Moreover, little to very high genetic differentiations were observed among populations (0.006≤FIS≤0.371) and morphotypes (0.029≤FIS≤0.307).
