Lateral elytral channel as narrow behind lateral angles as in basal part. Puncturation similar to that on head but punctures a little stronger, separated by about 6–10 or more times their own diameter. Sutural striae not developed. Legs. Tarsi slim, all tibiae slim, metafemora simple, without specific characters. Tarsal formula: 5-5- 4 in male. Mesoventrite. Posterior part subconcave. Anterior part raised with longitudinal carina. Lateral lines not developed. Metaventrite moderately developed. Femoral lines developed, shortened for half of their possible length. Fovea located in middle of posterior margin of metaventrite equipped with bush of erect setae. Membranous wings developed. Genitalia. Basal part of median lobe narrow ring-shaped of type C. Shape of median lobe apex resembles skittle pin in dorsal view. Apical part of median lobe first contracted, emarginated laterally, then feebly widened. Operculum egg-shaped. Parameres narrowed apically; each with two short and fine setae (aedeagus as in Figs 1, 2). Variation and sexual dimorphism. Length of body is 1.8–2.0 mm in the type series. The ratio of A3/A2 varies between 1.3–1.6. Tarsal formula 5-4- 4 in female. Spermatheca with pear-shaped basal part and simply bowed distal thin part (Fig. 4). Length of spermatheca 0.13 mm. Differential diagnosis. Agathidium (Agathidium) pilulum sp. nov. as well as the species it is compared with bellow habitually belong to the A. madurense species group sensu AඇGൾඅංඇං (1993) due to raised anterior part of the supraocular carina. The new species stands closest to A. (Agathidium) occultum Angelini & De Marzo, 1998 from China, Yunnan (AඇGൾඅංඇං & Dൾ Mൺඋඓඈ 1998b) as both species are similar in the shape of body that is broadly oval, in the shape of straight, feebly emarginated clypeus, in the eyes that are parabola slice-shaped and in the raised anterolateral bead of head. Colour of the antenna is yellow-red with A9 and A10 a little darker in both species. Both compared species possess A3 distinctly longer than A2 and also slim tibiae. Sutural stria is missing in both species. Agathidium pilulum sp. nov. differs from A. occultum in the specific shape of its median lobe that is simply cylindrical with broadly rounded tip in A. occultum. Agathidium pilulum sp. nov. can be also compared to A. (A.) alesi Angelini & De Marzo, 1998 from Taiwan (AඇGൾඅංඇං & Dൾ Mൺඋඓඈ 1998a), that also belongs to the A. madurense species group, having similar skittle pin-shaped apical part of the median lobe. The new species differs from A. alesi in distinctly smaller body (1.8–2.0 mm), while the length of body is 3.0– 4.1 mm in A. alesi. Antenna is bicolored in A. pilulum sp. nov., antenna in A. alesi is unicolorous, light. Posterior femora are straight on their hind margin, while the same are toothed in A. alesi. Moreover, the apex of the tegmen is distinctly bent upwards and paramera is shorter in A. alesi compared with A. pilulum sp. nov. Spermatheca is similar in its shape in all the compared species; basal part of spermatheca is pear-shaped in A. pilulum sp. nov. while the same is subcylindrical in A. occultum and A. alesi. Etymology. The name of the new species draws the attention to the globular shape of the apex of the median lobe. Therefore the name is derived from the Latin word pilula (= globule in English). The species belonging to the genus Ptomaphagus Hellwig, 1795 (Coleoptera, Leiodidae, Cholevinae, Ptomaphagini) from eastern Asia are assigned to three species groups. Group yasutoshii has a single species: P. (s. str.) yasutoshii Nishikawa, 1993 from Taiwan, China. Group nepalensis with three species: P. (s. str.) nepalensis Perreau, 1988 from Nepal and P. (s. str.) masumotoi Nishikawa, 2011 from Thailand are redescribed, and P. (s. str.) piccoloi Wang, Růžička, Nishikawa, Perreau & Hayashi, 2016 is recorded for the first time from China (Zhejiang). Group sibiricus with seven species, including two newly described Chinese ones P. (s. str.) funiu sp. n. from Henan, and P. (s. str.) haba sp. n. from Yunnan, and five known species: P. (s. str.) chenggongi Wang, Nishikawa, Perreau, Růžička & Hayashi, 2016, P. (s. str.) hayashii Wang, Růžička, Perreau, Nishikawa & Park, 2016, P. (s. str.) kuntzeni Sokolowski, 1957 (distribution records from Myanmar excluded), P. (s. str.) sibiricus Jeannel, 1934 and P. (s. str.) tingtingtae Wang, Nishikawa, Perreau, Růžička & Hayashi, 2016. Specimens of other undescribed species of the group sibiricus are also recorded, revealing a high diversity of this genus in eastern Asia, especially in central and north Sichuan, China, which essentially remains to be investigated. Relevant morphological characters of the examined species are illustrated with colour plates, and their known distributions are mapped. A key to species of Ptomaphagus from eastern Asia is provided. In this paper we present an updated checklist of thallus-forming Laboulbeniomycetes (Ascomycota, Pezizomycotina), that is, the orders Herpomycetales and Laboulbeniales, from Belgium and the Netherlands. Two species are newly described based on morphology, molecular data (ITS, LSU ribosomal DNA) and ecology (host association). These areHesperomyces halyziaeonHalyzia sedecimguttata(Coleoptera, Coccinellidae) from both countries andLaboulbenia quarantenaeonBembidion biguttatum(Coleoptera, Carabidae) from Belgium. In addition, nine new country records are presented. For Belgium:Laboulbenia aubryionAmara aranea(Coleoptera, Carabidae) andRhachomyces spinosusonSyntomus foveatus(Coleoptera, Carabidae). For the Netherlands:Chitonomyces melanurusonLaccophilus minutus(Coleoptera, Dytiscidae),Euphoriomyces agathidiionAgathidium laevigatum(Coleoptera, Leiodidae),Laboulbenia fasciculataonOmophron limbatum(Coleoptera, Carabidae),Laboulbenia metabletionSyntomus foveatusandS. truncatellus(Coleoptera, Carabidae),Laboulbenia pseudomaseionPterostichus melanarius(Coleoptera, Carabidae),Rhachomyces canariensisonTrechus obtusus(Coleoptera, Carabidae), andStigmatomyces hydrelliaeonHydrellia albilabris(Diptera, Ephydridae). Finally, an identification key to 140 species of thallus-forming Laboulbeniomycetes in Belgium and the Netherlands is provided. Based on the combined data, we are able to identify mutual gaps that need to be filled as well as weigh the impact of chosen strategies (fieldwork, museum collections) and techniques in these neighboring countries. The aim of this work is to serve as a reference for studying Laboulbeniomycetes fungi in Europe.

A. mexicanum Hendrichs, 1979: 106. Holotype male not in MCMC (as indicated in original description), and not in UNAM (where part of that author’s specimens may be placed) [in Miller & Wheeler, 2005b: 164, specimens not seen] [six paratypes are in the National Collection of Insects, Mexico City, but lacked identification labels (José Luis Navarrete-Heredia, 2019, personal comm. to SBP)]. Original description states some specimens supposedly deposited in SBPC but this was never done. Type locality: Cerro Tlaloc, 3800 m, México State, Mexico. Distribution: Mexico: Ciudad de México and México States. The species is of uncertain status because specimens from the type series were not seen by Miller & Wheeler., Published as part of Peck, Stewart B., Gnaspini, Pedro & Newton, Alfred F., 2020, Updated catalog and generic keys of the Leiodidae (Insecta: Coleoptera) of the Neotropical region (" Latin America ": Mexico, the West Indies, and Central and South America), pp. 1-114 in Zootaxa 4741 (1) on page 69, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4741.1.1, http://zenodo.org/record/3772899, {"references":["Hendrichs, S. Genus Agathidium Panzer Agathidium Panzer, 1797: no. 13. Type species: Tetratoma globosa Herbst [1792] (= Silpha seminulum Linnaeus [1758], syn. in ?? [already by Gyllenhal 1810: 573] (by monotypy). Note: Proposed as nomen protectum by provision of ICZN 1999: Art. 23.9 (Wheeler & Miller, 2005: 34). = Volvoxis Kugelann, 1794: 535 (not preoccupied by Volvox Linnaeus [1758], Chlorophyta). Type species: Tetratoma globosa Herbst (= Silpha seminulum Linnaeus [1758] by subsequent designation of Newton, 1998: 95 (10 species in original description). Note: Proposed as nomen oblitum by provision of ICZN 1999: Art. 23.9 (Wheeler & Miller, 2005: 34) due to lack of use as a valid name after 1899. = Agathidium Illiger, 1798: 81 (unnecessary replacement name for Volvoxis Kugelann [1794] (in part), incorrectly assumed to be preoccupied by Volvox Linnaeus [1758]). Type species: Tetratoma globosa Herbst [1792] (= Silpha seminulum Linnaeus [1785]), fixed by autotypy as replacement name for Volvoxis. Note: It is not clear if Illiger intended to propose a new generic name here; he did not refer the generic name to Panzer (1797), although he did refer to Panzer’s (1797: 13) species treatment of Agathidium globosum. The above treatment assumes it was an intentional proposal of a new name to replace Volvoxis. Note 1: Volvoxis Kugelann has priority for the name of this genus, but this name was rejected and replaced with Agathidium by Illiger (1798) in the mistaken belief that Volvoxis was preoccupied by Volvox Linnaeus, and this replacement name became generally accepted. However, Panzer (1797) had already used Agathidium in the same sense a year earlier, without explanation. Illiger (1798) made no mention of Panzer’s (1797) use of Agathidium so these have often been treated as independent names (e.g., Newton, 1998: 95 – 96), with Panzer’s name having priority and Illiger’s name being a junior homonym of it. All three names have the same type species as indicated above, and thus are objective synonyms. Wheeler & Miller (2005: 34) cited Article 23.9 of the Code (ICZN, 1999) to set aside priority and accept Agathidium Panzer as the valid name for the genus (nomen protectum) and treat Volvoxis as a forgotten name (nomen oblitum). Agathidium has been attributed to both Panzer and Illiger at various times, sometimes (by accident) even in the same publication (see Newton, 1998: 94, 95), but Panzer, 1797 is correct. Note 2: Revised in Hlisnikovský (1964a) and Miller & Wheeler (2005b) and Wheeler & Miller (2005). Note 3: Wheeler & Miller (2005) abandoned the use of subgenera and proposed a system of species groups, as used below, which may have some relationship to previously established subgenera. Most Mexican and Central American species are in the oniscoides species group. The rich species diversity of Mexico and Central America is obviously only partly known. Key: to species groups in Wheeler & Miller, 2005: 37. Distribution: 822 spp.—Holarctic, Africa, Oriental, northern Neotropical. Note 4— Species wrongly reported for the Neotropics: A. exiguum Melsheimer [1844] —The record of A. californicum Horn [1880] [= A. exiguum, Miller & Wheel- er, 2005b: 156 syn] for Guatemala (Quiché Mts., 7000 – 9000 ft.) in Matthews, 1887: 75 is a misidentification of an unknown different species (Miller & Wheeler, 2005b: 160). A. oniscoides Palisot de Beauvois [1805] —The record of Matthews, 1887: 74 for Mexico (Jacala, Hidalgo State) is in error (a misidentification, in Miller & Wheeler, 2005b: 151). Biology: Usually in forested habitats and on slime molds (Hatch, 1957; Russell, 1979; Newton, 1984; Wheeler, 1987, 1990)., Published as part of Peck, Stewart B., Gnaspini, Pedro & Newton, Alfred F., 2020, Updated catalog and generic keys of the Leiodidae (Insecta: Coleoptera) of the Neotropical region (" Latin America ": Mexico, the West Indies, and Central and South America), pp. 1-114 in Zootaxa 4741 (1) on pages 66-67, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4741.1.1, http://zenodo.org/record/3772899, {"references":["Panzer, G. Agathidium mexicanum Hendrichs, 1979: Types rediscovered JOS L. NAVARRETE-HEREDIA 1, LILIANA P. SANDOVAL 1 & SANTIAGO ZARAGOZA-CABALLERO 2 1 Centro de Estudios en Zoologa, CUCBA, Universidad de Guadalajara, Apdo. Postal 134, 45100, Zapopan, Jalisco, Mxico; 2 Instituto de Biologa, Universidad Nacional Autnoma de Mxico, 04510 Coyoacn, Ciudad de Mxico, Mxico Agathidium mexicanum Hendrichs, 1979: 106 is the single Mexican species of Leiodidae described by a Mexican entomologist: Chemical Engineer Jorge Hendrichs. As an amateur coleopterist he made a beetle collection of 18,400 specimens, adequately labeled by his wife and daughter. Most of the specimens are now in the entomological collection of the Instituto de Biologa, UNAM. He published 12 papers, one of them devoted to the description of one leiodid species: Agathidium mexicanum Hendrichs, 1979. Type specimens of A. mexicanum were collected in Estado de Mexico and Distrito Federal (now Ciudad de Mxico) localities (type locality: Cerro Tlaloc, Estado de Mxico). The type series as described in the original description was constituted by 13 specimens: Holotype (male), allotype (female) and, 11 paratypes (6 males and 5 females). For specific details, data of the material examined is fully included (Hendrichs 1979: 110): ESTADO DE MXICO: Cerro Tlaloc 3800 m, 29-I-72, holotipo ♂, alotipo ♀ y 2 paratipos ♀ ♀; Ro Fro: 3300 m, 30- I-72, 2 paratipos ♂ ♂ y 1 paratipo ♀; Jalatlaco: 3400 m, 29.-XII-77, 1 paratipo ♂ y 1 paratipo ♀; Lagunas de Zempoala: 3100 m, 16-IV-76, 1 paratipo ♀. Two paratypes in the personal collection of Dr. S. B. Peck, allotype and remaining paratypes in the author collection (Hendrichs 1979: 110). Agathidium mexicanum is cited in the synopsis of Mexican Leiodidae by Peck (2000: 449). Later it is cited again in Miller and Wheeler (2005: 164) with a comment that the holotype is not in either Universidad Nacional Autnoma de Mexico (UNAM) or the Museo de Historia Natural de la Ciudad de Mexico . Zaragoza-Caballero and Prez-Hernndez (2017) published a catalog of Coleoptera types in the entomological collection at UNAM (CNIN) and include some leiodid species, but A. mexicanum is not mentioned. In a recent visit to the Entomological Collection of the Institute of Biology at Universidad Nacional Autnoma de Mxico we searched again in the CNIN collection looking for unidentified leiodids. After a close examination we found ten Agathidium specimens without identification labels. All the specimens were part of the Hendrichs collection. Later we visited the entomological collection of the Museo de Historia Natural de la Ciudad de Mxico. Biol. Mara E. Daz Batres, curator of the collection for many years, told us that no types of the species were deposited in that collection. There are type specimens but of other leiodid species. She suspected that types will be in the entomological collection of the Institute of Ecology where some specimens of the J. Hendrichs collection are deposited. We asked Dr. C. Deloya and M.C. Leonardo Delgado, coleopterists of the Institute of Ecology, about such specimens, and no specimens were found. Finally, we asked Dr. S. Peck if he received the paratypes. He confirmed that no paratypes had been deposited in his collection. After a careful and detailed examination of the specimens found at CNIN we conclude that the ten specimens are part of the type series of Agathidium mexicanum (three specimens are lost) but without type labels. These specimens are clearly an Agathidium species and label data are the same as label data of the type series of A. mexicanum cited in the original description (Hendrichs, 1979). So, the type series is constituted as (data from labels; information in bold is not included in the original publication): Tlaloc, Mex., 29.I.72, 3800 m, bajo tronco, Col. J. Hendrichs/ macho 1/ Ex Coleccin Jorge Hendrichs S./ H. As the type series indicates that holotype is a male from Tlaloc and three paratype females from the same locality, this specimens we assume correspond to the holotype. So, a holotype label was added to the specimen. Remaining specimens were recognized as paratypes and labels were attached to each one. Tlaloc, Mex., 29.I.72, 3800 m, bajo corteza, Col. J. Hendrichs/ hembra 2/ Ex Coleccin Jorge Hendrichs S./ H. Tlaloc, Mex., 29.I.72, 3800 m, bajo corteza, Col. J. Hendrichs/ hembra 3/ Ex Coleccin Jorge Hendrichs S. /H. One specimen of this series is lost. Original locality cited as Cerro Tlaloc. Ro Fro, Mex, 30.I.72, 3300m, Kiefernrinde [pine bark], Col. J. Hendrichs S./ one male and one female specimens/ Ex Coleccin Jorge Hendrichs S. In the original paper, some specific data were omitted as is the case of the specimens from Ro Fro where Kiefernrinde [pine bark], Col. J. Agathidium mexicanum Hendrichs, 1979: 106 is the single Mexican species of Leiodidae described by a Mexican entomologist: Chemical Engineer Jorge Hendrichs. As an amateur coleopterist he made a beetle collection of 18,400 specimens, adequately labeled by his wife and daughter. Most of the specimens are now in the entomological collection of the Instituto de Biología, UNAM. He published 12 papers, one of them devoted to the description of one leiodid species: Agathidium mexicanum Hendrichs, 1979. Type specimens of A. mexicanum were collected in Estado de Mexico and Distrito Federal (now Ciudad de México) localities (type locality: Cerro Tlaloc, Estado de México). The type series as described in the original description was constituted by 13 specimens: Holotype (male), allotype (female) and, 11 paratypes (6 males and 5 females). For specific details, data of the material examined is fully included (Hendrichs 1979: 110)

Based on a cladistic analysis, a new genus of Agathidini, Agathacrista Sharkey, is proposed and its phylogenetic position hypothesized. Two previously described (Agathacrista cancellata, Agathacrista depressifera) and three new species (Agathacrista sailomi, Agathacrista winloni, Agathacrista krataeii) are included. The distribution of Agathacrista is limited to the Oriental region and southern portion of the eastern Palearctic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The beetle genus Agathidium is the largest insect group documented that principally feeds on slime moulds. Agathidium pulchellum, one of the rarest Agathidium species in Europe, is listed in the EU’s Habitats Directive. We studied the habitat associations of A. pulchellum in 44 sites located in old-growth and managed forests in eastern Finland. Agathidium pulchellum occurred exclusively on the slime-mould species Trichia decipiens. The host was associated with mid-decayed aspen, spruce and birch logs, and its incidence grew with both increasing log diameter and stand-level log density of spruce and aspen. We also observed that even if its host was present, the beetle was absent from sites with less than 80 aspen and spruce logs per hectare. All sites with A. pulchellum were natural forests of high conservation value. Our results show that it is possible to systematically survey the occurrence of A. pulchellum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ANIMAL sexual behavior , *AGATHIDIUM , *BEETLES , *SPECIES , *SILPHIDAE , *ANIMAL behavior - Abstract
Males of some species of Agathidium Panzer have a prominent horn on the dorsal surface of the left mandible. The horn is unique in that it is highly asymmetrical. One species, A. marae Miller and Wheeler, has an additional horn on the right side of the frons. The horns are categorized into four general morphological types. Scaling relationships are investigated for two species, A. angulare Mannerheim and A. pulchrum LeConte. These species exhibit a scaling relationship that is strongly discontinuous (sigmoid) with a prominent "switch point". Measurement data (pronotal width versus mandible height) are fit to a nonlinear regression model to determine the switch points and slopes at the switch points for the populations of each species. Behaviors associated with mating and other behaviors are described for A. pulchrum . Males use a head-thrusting behavior to dislodge rival males from the substrate. Horned males appear better able to dislodge opponents. Head thrusting is also used less vigorously on females before and after mating. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
