Search

Comets, relics from the early solar system, consist of dust and ice. The ice sublimates as comets approach the Sun, ejecting dust from their nuclei seen as activity. Different volatiles sublimate at different Sun-comet distances and eject dust of unique sizes, structures, and compositions. In this study, we present new polarimetric observations of Oort-cloud comet C/2017 K2 (PANSTARRS) in R and I-filter domains before, during, and after its crossover of the water-ice sublimation regime at phase angles of 15.9\arcdeg, 10.5\arcdeg, and 20.0\arcdeg, respectively. Combining multiband optical imaging data covering a wide range of heliocentric distances ($\sim$14$-$2.3 au), we aim to characterize the preperihelion evolution of cometary activity as well as the properties of its coma dust. Two discontinuous brightening events were observed: at $\sim$6 au presumably associated with changes in CO-like supervolatile ice activity, and at $\sim$2.9 au when water ice took over. Particularly, the latter activation is accompanied by changes in coma morphology and color whose trends differ between the inner ($\sim$10$^3$-km) and outer ($\sim$10$^4$-km) parts of the coma. No polarimetric discontinuities on the comet were observed over the inner coma region, all epochs showing phase-angle and wavelength dependencies compatible with those of active comets observed in similar observing geometry. During this period, the underlying dust continuum overwhelmed H$\alpha$ emission at around 656.3 nm, suggesting less water ice on the comet's surface than expected. The process of cometary activity continues to pose a challenging question in cometary science. The activity modeling of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, based on data from the Rosetta mission, has significantly enhanced our comprehension of cometary activity. But thermophysical models have difficulties in simultaneously explaining the production rates of various gas species and dust. It has been suggested that different gas species might be responsible for the ejection of refractory material in distinct size ranges. This work focuses on investigating abundance and the ejection mechanisms of large ($\gtrsim$ 1 cm) aggregates from the comet nucleus. We aim to determine their properties and map the distribution of their source regions across the comet surface. This can place constraints on activity models for comets. We examined 189 images acquired at five epochs by the OSIRIS/NAC instrument. Our goal was to identify bright tracks produced by individual aggregates as they traversed the camera field of view. We generated synthetic images based on the output of dynamical simulations involving various types of aggregates. By comparing these synthetic images with the observations, we determine the characteristics of the simulated aggregates that most closely resembled the observations. We identified over 30000 tracks present in the OSIRIS images, derived constraints on the characteristics of the aggregates and mapped their origins on the nucleus surface. The aggregates have an average radius of $\simeq5$ cm, and a bulk density consistent with that of the comet's nucleus. Due to their size, gas drag exerts only a minor influence on their dynamical behavior, so an initial velocity is needed in order to bring them into the camera field of view. The source regions of these aggregates are predominantly located near the boundaries of distinct terrains on the surface., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures. Rosetta/OSIRIS took optical measurements of the intensity of scattered light from the coma of 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko over a wide range of phase angles. These data have been used to measure the phase angle dependent radiance profile of the dust coma. We want to provide information about the column area densities of the dust coma as seen from Rosetta. This information in combination with the measured OSIRIS phase function can then be used to determine the scattering phase function of the dust particles. We use a simple numerical model to calculate the dust density in the coma. For this we neglect all forces but solar gravitation and radiation pressure. As this cannot describe particles close to the surface of the comet, we assume starting conditions at a sufficient distance. We evaluate the column area density as observed from Rosetta/OSIRIS and compare the results for different spacecraft positions, dust sizes and surface activity distributions. We find the phase angle dependence of the column area density to be largely independent of particle size and spacecraft positions. The determining factor is the activity distribution across the surface, especially the activity on the night side. For models with no night side activity, we find the column area density at high phase angles to be roughly two orders of magnitude larger than at low phase angles. The radiance profile measured from inside a cometary coma results from the combined effects of a phase angle dependent column area density and the scattering phase function. The radiance profile is therefore strongly dependent on the surface activity distribution, and - unless the dust emission is isotropic - any attempt to infer particle properties (as expressed through the scattering phase function) from such data must take into account and de-bias for this spatial variation of the dust column area density.

Methods. We algorithmically tracked thousands of individual particles through four OSIRIS/NAC image sequences of 67P's near-nucleus coma. We then traced concentrated particle groups back to the nucleus surface, and estimated their potential source regions, size distributions, and projected dynamical parameters. Finally, we compared the observed activity to dust coma simulations. Results. We traced back 409 decimeter-sized particles to four suspected source regions. The regions strongly overlap and are mostly confined to the Khonsu-Atum-Anubis area. The activity may be linked to rugged terrain, and the erosion of fine dust and the ejection of large boulders may be mutually exclusive. Power-law indices fitted to the particle size--frequency distributions range from $3.4 \pm 0.3$ to $3.8 \pm 0.4$. Gas drag fits to the radial particle accelerations provide an estimate for the local gas production rates ($Q_\text{g} = 3.6 \cdot 10^{-5}$ kg s$^{-1}$ m$^{-2}$), which is several times higher than our model predictions based on purely insolation-driven water ice sublimation. Our observational results and our modeling results both reveal that our particles were likely ejected with substantial nonzero initial velocities of around 0.5$-$0.6 m s$^{-1}$. Conclusions. Our findings strongly suggest that the observed ejection of decimeter-sized particles cannot be explained by water ice sublimation and favorable illumination conditions alone. Instead, the local structures and compositions of the source regions likely play a major role. In line with current ejection models of decimeter-sized particles, we deem an overabundance of CO$_2$ ice and its sublimation to be the most probable driver. Ejection of large boulder-like debris is a vigorous form of cometary activity that is unlikely induced by water ice out-gassing alone but rather associated with the sublimation of super-volatile ices. Though perceived on several comets, actual pattern and mechanism of such activity are still unclear. Here we report on a specialized observation of ejections of decimeter- to meter-sized boulders on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko outbound between 2.5 and 3.3 AU from the Sun. With a common source region, these events recurred in local morning. The boulders of elongated shapes were ejected in clusters at low inclinations comparable to the solar elevation below 40 degrees at the time. We show that these chunks could be propelled by the surrounding, asymmetric gas field that produced a distinct lateral acceleration. Possibly both water and carbon dioxide have contributed to their mobilization, while the season and local topography are among deciding factors. The mechanisms for sustaining regular activity of comets at large heliocentric distances are likely more diverse and intricate than previously thought.

When viewed from Earth, most of what we observe of a comet is dust. The influence of solar radiation pressure on the trajectories of dust particles depends on their cross-section to mass ratio. Hence solar radiation pressure acts like a mass spectrometer inside a cometary tail. The appearances of cometary dust tails have long been studied to obtain information on the dust properties, such as characteristic particle size and initial velocity when entering the tail. Over the past two decades, several spacecraft missions to comets have enabled us to study the dust activity of their targets at much greater resolution than is possible with a telescope on Earth or in near-Earth space, and added detail to the results obtained by the spacecraft visiting comet 1P/Halley in 1986. We now know that the dynamics of dust in the inner cometary coma is complex and includes a significant fraction of particles that will eventually fall back to the surface. The filamented structure of the near-surface coma is thought to result from a combination of topographic focussing of the gas flow, inhomogeneous distribution of activity across the surface, and projection effects. It is possible that some larger-than-centimetre debris contains ice when lifted from the surface, which can affect its motion. We present imaging observations of the disintegrating long-period comet C/2021 A1 (Leonard). High resolution observations with Hubble Space Telescope show no evidence for surviving fragments, and place a 3 sigma upper limit to their possible radius about 60 m (albedo 0.1 assumed). In contrast, wide field observations from the Swan Hill Observatory, Australia, show an extensive debris cloud, the cross-section and estimated mass of which are consistent with complete disintegration of the nucleus near mid- December 2021 (at about 0.8 au). Two methods give the pre-disruption nucleus radius, r = 0.6+/-0.2 km. Tidal, collisional, sublimation and pressure-confined explosion models provide implausible explanations of the disintegration. However, rotational instability driven by outgassing torques has a very short timescale (of order 0.1 year) given the orbit and size of the C/2021 A1 nucleus, and offers the most plausible mechanism for the disruption. Initial rotational breakup is accelerated by the exposure and strong sublimation of previously buried volatiles, leading to catastrophic destruction of the nucleus., Comment: 35 pages, 7 figures

Aims. Understanding the activity is vital for deciphering the structure, formation, and evolution of comets. We investigate models of cometary activity by comparing them to the dynamics of 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Methods. We matched simple thermal models of water activity to the combined Rosetta datasets by fitting to the total outgassing rate and four components of the outgassing induced non-gravitational force and torque, with a final manual adjustment of the model parameters to additionally match the other two torque components. We parametrised the thermal model in terms of a distribution of relative activity over the surface of the comet, and attempted to link this to different terrain types. We also tested a more advanced thermal model based on a pebble structure. Results. We confirm a hemispherical dichotomy and non-linear water outgassing response to insolation. The southern hemisphere of the comet and consolidated terrain show enhanced activity relative to the northern hemisphere and dust-covered, unconsolidated terrain types, especially at perihelion. We further find that the non-gravitational torque is especially sensitive to the activity distribution, and to fit the pole-axis orientation in particular, activity must be concentrated (in excess of the already high activity in the southern hemisphere and consolidated terrain) around the south pole and on the body and neck of the comet over its head. This is the case for both the simple thermal model and the pebble-based model. Overall, our results show that water activity cannot be matched by a simple model of sublimating surface ice driven by the insolation alone, regardless of the surface distribution, and that both local spatial and temporal variations are needed to fit the data., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 13 pages, 22 figures including appendix

Active asteroids show (typically transient) cometary activity, driven by a range of processes. A sub-set, sometimes called main-belt comets, may be driven by sublimation and so could be useful for tracing the present-day distribution of asteroid ice. Object P/2018 P3 has a Tisserand parameter 3.096 but a high eccentricity 0.415, placing it within the dynamical boundary between asteroids and comets. We aim to determine the cause of activity (sublimation or something else) and assess the dynamical stability of P3, in order to better constrain the intrinsic ice content in the main belt. We obtained Hubble Space Telescope images of P3 at the highest angular resolution. We compared the observations with a Monte Carlo model of dust dynamics. We identified and analyzed archival CFHT (2013) and NEOWISE (2018) data. In addition, we numerically integrated the orbits of P3 clones for 100 Myr. P3 has been recurrently active near two successive perihelia (at 1.76 AU), indicative of a sublimation origin. The absence of 4.6 um band excess indicates zero or negligible CO or CO2 gas production from P3. The properties of the ejected dust are remarkably consistent with those found in other main-belt comets (continuous emission of ~0.05-5 mm particles at 0.3-3 m/s speeds), with mass-loss rates of >~2 kg/s. The orbit of P3 is unstable on timescales ~10 Myr. We speculate that P3 has recently arrived from a more stable source (either the Kuiper Belt or elsewhere in the main belt) and has been physically aged at its current location, finally becoming indistinguishable from a weakly sublimating asteroid in terms of its dust properties. Whatever the source of P3, given the dynamical instability of its current orbit, P3 should not be used to trace the native distribution of asteroid ice., Comment: 8 pages, 12 figures, A&A in press

We probed the surface environment of large ($>$80 km in diameter) T-type asteroids, a taxonomic type relatively ill-constrained as an independent group, and discussed their place of origin. We performed spectroscopic observations of two T-type asteroids, (96) Aegle and (570) Kythera, over 2.8--4.0 $\mu$m using the Subaru telescope. With other T-types' spectra available in the literature and survey datasets, we strove to find commonalities and global trends in this group. We also utilised the asteroids' polarimetric data and meteorite spectra to constrain their surface texture and composition. Our targets exhibit red $L$-band continuum slopes similar to (1) Ceres and 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, and have an OH-absorption feature with band centres $<$2.8 $\mu$m. (96) Aegle hints at a shallow N--H band near 3.1 $\mu$m and C--H band of organic materials over 3.4--3.6 $\mu$m, whereas no diagnostic bands of water ice and other volatiles exceeding the noise of the data were seen for both asteroids. The large T-type asteroids but (596) Scheila display similar spectral shapes to our targets. $\sim$50 \% of large T-types contain an absorption band near 0.6--0.65 $\mu$m likely associated with hydrated minerals. For T-type asteroids (except Jupiter Trojans) of all sizes, we found a weak correlation: the smaller the diameter and the closer the Sun, the redder the visible slope. The 2.9-$\mu$m band depths of large T-types suggest that they might have experienced aqueous alteration comparable to Ch-types but more intense than most of the main-belt asteroids. The polarimetric phase curve of the T-types is well described by a particular surface structure and their 0.5--4.0 $\mu$m reflectance spectra appear most similar to CI chondrites with grain sizes of $\sim$25--35 $\mu$m. We present Hubble Space Telescope observations of active asteroid P/2020 O1 taken to examine its development for a year after perihelion. We find that the mass loss peaks <~1 kg/s in 2020 August and then declines to nearly zero over four months. Long-duration mass loss (~180 days) is consistent with a sublimation origin, indicating that this object is likely an ice-bearing main-belt comet. Equilibrium sublimation of water ice from an area as small as 1580 m^2 can supply the observed mass loss. Time-series photometry shows tentative evidence for extremely rapid rotation (double-peaked period < 2 hr) of the small nucleus (effective radius ~420 m). Ejection velocities of 0.1 mm particles are comparable to the 0.3 m/s gravitational escape speed from the nucleus, while larger particles are ejected at speeds less than the escape velocity. These properties are consistent with the sublimation of near-surface ice aided by centripetal acceleration. If water ice sublimation is confirmed, P/2020 O1 would be the icy asteroid with the smallest semimajor axis (highest temperature), setting new bounds on the distribution of ice in the asteroid belt., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, ApJL in press

Context. During the post-perihelion phase of the European Space Agency's Rosetta mission to comet 67P, the Optical, Spectroscopic, and Infrared Remote Imaging System on board the spacecraft took numerous image sequences of the near-nucleus coma, with many showing the motion of individual pieces of debris ejected from active surface areas into space. Aims. We aim to track the motion of individual particles in these image sequences and derive their projected velocities and accelerations. This should help us to constrain their point of origin on the surface, understand the forces that influence their dynamics in the inner coma, and predict whether they will fall back to the surface or escape to interplanetary space. Methods. We have developed an algorithm that tracks the motion of particles appearing as point sources in image sequences. Our algorithm employs a point source detection software to locate the particles and then exploits the image sequences' pair-nature to reconstruct the particle tracks and derive the projected velocities and accelerations. We also constrained the particle size from their brightness. Results. Our algorithm identified 2268 tracks in a sample image sequence. Manual inspection not only found that 1187 (~52%) of them are likely genuine, but in combination with runs on simulated data it also revealed a simple criterion related to the completeness of a track to single out a large subset of the genuine tracks without the need for manual intervention. A tentative analysis of a small (n = 89) group of particles exemplifies how our data can be used, and provides first results on the particles' velocity, acceleration, and radius distributions, which agree with previous work., Comment: 16 pages, 20 figures

We report our new spectropolarimetric observations for 67P dust over 4,000--9,000 Angstrom using the ESO/Very Large Telescope in January--March 2016 (phase angle ranging $\sim$26--5 deg) to constrain the properties of the dust particles of 67P and therefrom diagnose the dust environment of its coma and near-surface layer at around the end of the Southern summer of the comet. We examined the optical behaviours of the dust, which, together with Rosetta colour data, were used to search for dust evolution with cometocentric distance. Modelling was also conducted to identify the dust attributes compatible with the results. The spectral dependence of the polarisation degree of 67P dust is flatter than found in other dynamical groups of comets in similar observing geometry. The depth of its negative polarisation branch appears to be a bit shallower than in long-period comets and might be getting shallower as 67P repeats its apparitions. Its dust colour shows a change in slope around 5,500 Angstrom, (17.3 $\pm$ 1.4) and (10.9 $\pm$ 0.6) % (1,000 Angstrom)$^{\rm -1}$ for shortward and longward of the wavelength, respectively, which are slightly redder but broadly consistent with the average of Jupiter-Family comets. Observations of 67P dust in this study can be attributed to dust agglomerates of $\sim$100 $\mu$m in size detected by Rosetta in early 2016. A porosity of 60 % shows the best match with our polarimetric results, yielding a dust density of $\sim$770 kg m$^{\rm -3}$. Compilation of Rosetta and our data indicates the dust's reddening with increasing nucleus distance, which may be driven by water-ice sublimation as the dust moves out of the nucleus. We estimate the possible volume fraction of water ice in the initially ejected dust as $\sim$6 % (i.e. the refractory-to-ice volume ratio of $\sim$14)., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present a possible correlation between the properties of scattered and thermal radiation from dust and the principal dust characteristics responsible for this relationship. To this end, we use the NASA/PDS archival polarimetric data on cometary dust in the Red (0.62--0.73 $\mu$m) and K (2.00--2.39 $\mu$m) domains to leverage the relative excess of the polarisation degree of a comet to the average trend at the given phase angle ($P_{\rm excess}$) as a metric of the dust's scattered light characteristics. The flux excess of silicate emissions to the continuum around 10 $\mu$m ($F_{\rm Si}/F_{\rm cont}$) is adopted from previous studies as a metric of the dust's MIR feature. The two metrics show a positive correlation when $P_{\rm excess}$ is measured in the K domain. No significant correlation was identified in the Red domain. The gas-rich comets have systematically weaker $F_{\rm Si}/F_{\rm cont}$ than the dust-rich ones, yet both groups retain the same overall tendency with different slope values. The observed positive correlation between the two metrics indicates that composition is a peripheral factor in characterising the dust's polarimetric and silicate emission properties. The systematic difference in $F_{\rm Si}/F_{\rm cont}$ for gas-rich versus dust-rich comets would rather correspond with the difference in their dust size distribution. Hence, our results suggest that the current MIR spectral models of cometary dust should prioritise the dust size and porosity over the composition. With light scattering being sensitive to different size scales in two wavebands, we expect the K-domain polarimetry to be sensitive to the properties of dust aggregates, such as size and porosity, which might have been influenced by evolutionary processes. Near-Sun Comet C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS) is the first member of a long-period comet group observed to disintegrate well before perihelion. Here we present our investigation into this disintegration event using images obtained in a 3-day {\it Hubble Space Telescope} (\hst) campaign. We identify two fragment clusters produced by the initial disintegration event, corresponding to fragments C/2019 Y4-A and C/2019 Y4-B identified in ground-based data. These two clusters started with similar integrated brightness, but exhibit different evolutionary behavior. C/2019 Y4-A was much shorter-lived compared to C/2019 Y4-B, and showed signs of significant mass-loss and changes in size distribution throughout the 3-day campaign. The cause of the initial fragmentation is undetermined by the limited evidence but crudely compatible with either the spin-up disruption of the nucleus or runaway sublimation of sub-surface supervolatile ices, either of which would lead to the release of a large amount of gas as inferred from the significant bluing of the comet observed shortly before the disintegration. Gas can only be produced by the sublimation of volatile ices, which must have survived at least one perihelion passage at a perihelion distance of $q=0.25$~au. We speculate that Comet ATLAS is derived from the ice-rich interior of a non-uniform, kilometer-wide progenitor that split during its previous perihelion. This suggests that comets down to a few kilometers in diameter can still possess complex, non-uniform interiors that can protect ices against intense solar heating., Comment: AJ in press

We study the development of activity in the incoming long-period comet C/2017 K2 over the heliocentric distance range 9 < r_H < 16 AU. The comet continues to be characterized by a coma of sub-millimeter and larger particles ejected at low velocity. In a fixed co-moving volume around the nucleus we find that the scattering cross-section of the coma is related to the heliocentric distance by a power law with heliocentric index $s = 1.14\pm0.05$. This dependence is significantly weaker than the inverse square variation of the insolation as a result of two effects. These are, first, the heliocentric dependence of the dust velocity and, second, a lag effect due to very slow-moving particles ejected long before the observations were taken. A Monte Carlo model of the photometry shows that dust production beginning at r_H ~ 35 AU is needed to match the measured heliocentric index, with only a slight dependence on the particle size distribution. Mass loss rates in dust at 10 AU are of order 1000 kg/s, while loss rates in gas may be much smaller, depending on the unknown dust to gas ratio. Consequently, the ratio of the non-gravitational acceleration to the local solar gravity may, depending on the nucleus size, attain values comparable to values found in short-period comets at much smaller distances. Non-gravitational acceleration in C/2017 K2 and similarly distant comets, while presently unmeasured, may limit the accuracy with which we can infer the properties of the Oort cloud from the orbits of long-period comets., Comment: 40 pages, 9 figures

The binary asteroid 288P/(300163) is unusual both for its combination of wide-separation and high mass ratio and for its comet-like activity. It is not currently known whether there is a causal connection between the activity and the unusual orbit or if instead the activity helped to overcome a strong detection bias against such sub-arcsecond systems. We aim to find observational constraints discriminating between possible formation scenarios and to characterise the physical properties of the system components. We measured the component separation and brightness using point spread function fitting to high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Camera 3 images from 25 epochs between 2011 and 2020. We constrained component sizes and shapes from the photometry, and we fitted a Keplerian orbit to the separation as a function of time. Approximating the components A and B as prolate spheroids with semi-axis lengths a$<$b and assuming a geometric albedo of 0.07, we find $a_A \leq$ 0.6 km, $b_A \geq$ 1.4 km, $a_B \leq$ 0.5 km, and $b_B \geq$ 0.8 km. We find indications that the dust production may have concentrated around B and that the mutual orbital period may have changed by 1-2 days during the 2016 perihelion passage. Orbit solutions have semi-major axes in the range of (105-109) km, eccentricities between 0.41 and 0.51, and periods of (117.3-117.5) days pre-perihelion and (118.5-119.5) days post-perihelion, corresponding to system masses in the range of (6.67-7.23) $\times$ 10$^{12}$ kg. The mutual and heliocentric orbit planes are roughly aligned. Based on the orbit alignment, we infer that spin-up of the precursor by the YORP effect led to the formation of the binary system. Context. Cometary dust particles are subjected to various forces after being lifted off the nucleus. These forces define the dynamics of dust, trajectories, alignment, and fragmentation, which, in turn, have a significant effect on the particle distribution in the coma. Aims. We develop a numerical thermophysical model that is applicable to icy cometary dust to study the forces attributed to the sublimation of ice. Methods. We extended the recently introduced synoptic model for ice-free dust particles to ice-containing dust. We introduced an additional source term to the energy balance equation accounting for the heat of sublimation and condensation. We use the direct simulation Monte Carlo approach with the dusty gas model to solve the mass balance equation and the energy balance equation simultaneously. Results. The numerical tests show that the proposed method can be applied for dust particles covering the size range from tens of microns to centimeters with a moderate computational cost. We predict that for an assumed ice volume fraction of 0.05, particles with a radius, r >> 1 mm, at 1.35 AU, may disintegrate into mm-sized fragments due to internal pressure build-up. Particles with r < 1 cm lose their ice content within minutes. Hence, we expect that only particles with r > 1cm may demonstrate sustained sublimation and the resulting outgassing forces.

We present Hubble Space Telescope observations of a photometric outburst and splitting event in interstellar comet 2I/Borisov. The outburst, first reported with the comet outbound at 2.8 AU (Drahus et al.~2020), was caused by the expulsion of solid particles having a combined cross-section about 100 sq. km and a mass in 0.1 mm sized particles about 2e7 kg. The latter corresponds to 1e-4 of the mass of the nucleus, taken as a sphere of radius 500 m. A transient ``double nucleus'' was observed on UT 2020 March 30 (about three weeks after the outburst), having a cross-section about 0.6 sq. km and corresponding dust mass 1e5 kg. The secondary was absent in images taken on and before March 28, and in images taken on and after April 03. The unexpectedly delayed appearance and rapid disappearance of the secondary are consistent with an origin through rotational bursting of one or more large (meter-sized) boulders under the action of outgassing torques, following their ejection from the main nucleus. Overall, our observations reveal that the outburst and splitting of the nucleus are minor events involving a negligible fraction of the total mass: 2I/Borisov will survive its passage through the planetary region largely unscathed., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures, 1 appendix

Hubble Space Telescope observations of interstellar comet 2I/Borisov near perihelion show the ejection of large (>~100 um) particles at <~9 m/s speeds, with estimated mass-loss rates of ~35 kg/s. The total mass loss from comet Borisov corresponds to loss of a surface shell on the nucleus only ~0.4 m thick. This shell is thin enough to be susceptible to past chemical processing in the interstellar medium by cosmic rays, meaning that the ejected materials cannot necessarily be considered as pristine. Our high-resolution images reveal persistent asymmetry in the dust coma, best explained by a thermal lag on the rotating nucleus causing peak mass loss to occur in the comet nucleus afternoon. In this interpretation, the nucleus rotates with an obliquity of 30 deg (pole direction RA = 205 deg and Dec. = 52 deg). The subsolar latitude varied from -35 deg (southern solstice) at the time of discovery to 0 deg (equinox) in 2020 January, suggesting the importance of seasonal effects. Solar system objects with perihelia beyond the orbit of Jupiter ($q >$ 5 AU) are too cold for water ice to generate an appreciable coma via sublimation. Despite this, numerous high perihelion objects (HPOs) including many comets and recently escaped Kuiper belt objects (``Centaurs'') are observed to be active out at least to the orbit of Saturn ($q \sim$ 10 AU). Peak equilibrium temperatures at 10 AU ($\sim$125 K), while far too low to sublimate water ice, are sufficient to sublimate super-volatiles such as CO and CO$_2$ ice. Temperatures at 10 AU are also high enough to trigger the rapid crystallization of exposed amorphous ice, thus constituting another possible driver of distant activity. While supervolatile ices can sublimate strongly (as $r_H^{-2}$) to at least Kuiper belt (30 AU) distances, crystallization is an exponential function of temperature that cannot be sustained much beyond $\sim$10 AU. The heliocentric dependence of the activity thus suggests an observational test. If activity in high perihelion objects is triggered by crystallization, then no examples of activity should be found with perihelia $q >>$ 10 AU. If, on the other hand, activity is due to free sublimation of exposed supervolatile ices, or another cause, then distant activity might be detected. We obtained sensitive, high resolution Hubble Space Telescope observations of HPOs to search for activity beyond the crystallization zone. No examples of activity were detected in 53 objects with $q >$ 15 AU, consistent with the crystallization trigger hypothesis. However, sensitivity limits are such that we cannot reject the alternative hypothesis that mass loss is driven by the sublimation of supervolatile ices. Context: Remote light scattering and thermal infrared observations provide clues about the physical properties of cometary and interplanetary dust particles. Identifying these properties will lead to a better understanding of the formation and evolution of the Solar System. Aims: We present a numerical solution for the radiative and conductive heat transport in a random particulate medium enclosed by an arbitrarily shaped surface. The method will be applied to study thermal properties of cometary dust particles. Methods: The recently introduced incoherent Monte Carlo radiative transfer method developed for scattering, absorption, and propagation of electromagnetic waves in dense discrete random media is extended for radiative heat transfer and thermal emission. The solution is coupled with the conductive Fourier transport equation that is solved with the finite-element method. Results: The proposed method allows the synoptic analysis of light scattering and thermal emission by large cometary dust particles consisting of submicrometer-sized grains. In particular, we show that these particles can sustain significant temperature gradients resulting in the superheating factor phase function observed for the coma of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

We present high resolution imaging observations of interstellar comet 2I/Borisov (formerly C/2019 Q4) obtained using the Hubble Space Telescope. Scattering from the comet is dominated by a coma of large particles (characteristic size 0.1 mm) ejected anisotropically. Convolution modeling of the coma surface brightness profile sets a robust limit to the spherical-equivalent nucleus radius r_n < 0.5 km (geometric albedo 0.04 assumed). We obtain an independent constraint based on the non-gravitational acceleration of the nucleus, finding r_n > 0.2 km (nucleus density 500 kg/m3 assumed). The profile and the non-gravitational constraints cannot be simultaneously satisfied if density < 25 kg/m3; the nucleus of comet Borisov cannot be a low density fractal assemblage of the type proposed elsewhere for the nucleus of 1I/'Oumuamua. We show that the spin-up timescale to outgassing torques, even at the measured low production rates, is comparable to or shorter than the residence time in the Sun's water sublimation zone. The spin angular momentum of the nucleus should be changed significantly during the current solar fly-by. Lastly, we find that the differential interstellar size distribution in the 0.5 mm to 100 m size range can be represented by power laws with indices < 4 and that interstellar bodies of 100 m size scale strike Earth every one to two hundred million years., Comment: 24 Pages, 5 Figures

The goal of Project GAUSS is to return samples from the dwarf planet Ceres. Ceres is the most accessible ocean world candidate and the largest reservoir of water in the inner solar system. It shows active cryovolcanism and hydrothermal activities in recent history that resulted in minerals not found in any other planets to date except for Earth's upper crust. The possible occurrence of recent subsurface ocean on Ceres and the complex geochemistry suggest possible past habitability and even the potential for ongoing habitability. Aiming to answer a broad spectrum of questions about the origin and evolution of Ceres and its potential habitability, GAUSS will return samples from this possible ocean world for the first time. The project will address the following top-level scientific questions: 1) What is the origin of Ceres and the origin and transfer of water and other volatiles in the inner solar system? 2) What are the physical properties and internal structure of Ceres? What do they tell us about the evolutionary and aqueous alteration history of icy dwarf planets? 3) What are the astrobiological implications of Ceres? Was it habitable in the past and is it still today? 4) What are the mineralogical connections between Ceres and our current collections of primitive meteorites? GAUSS will first perform a high-resolution global remote sensing investigation, characterizing the geophysical and geochemical properties of Ceres. Candidate sampling sites will then be identified, and observation campaigns will be run for an in-depth assessment of the candidate sites. The JAXA/ISAS spacecraft DESTINY$^+$ will be launched to the active asteroid (3200) Phaethon in 2022. Among the proposed core payload is the DESTINY+ Dust Analyzer (DDA) which is an upgrade of the Cosmic Dust Analyzer flown on the Cassini spacecraft to Saturn (Srama et al. 2011). We use two up-to-date computer models, the ESA Interplanetary Meteoroid Engineering Model (IMEM, Dikarev et al. 2005), and the interstellar dust module of the Interplanetary Meteoroid environment for EXploration model (IMEX; Sterken2013 et al., Strub et al. 2019) to study the detection conditions and fluences of interplanetary and interstellar dust with DDA. Our results show that a statistically significant number of interplanetary and interstellar dust particles will be detectable with DDA during the 4-years interplanetary cruise of DESTINY+. This article investigates reconstructing the internal mass density of a numerical asteroid model using the gradient of a simulated gravity field as synthetic measurement data. Our goal is to advance the mathematical inversion methodology and find feasibility constraints for the resolution, noise and orbit selection for future space missions. We base our model on the shape of the asteroid Itokawa as well as on the recent observations and simulation studies which suggest that the internal density varies, increasing towards the center, and that the asteroid may have a detailed structure. We introduce randomized multiresolution scan algorithm which might provide a robust way to cancel out bias and artifact effects related to the measurement noise and numerical discretization. In this scheme, the inverse algorithm can reconstruct details of various sizes without fixing the exact resolution {\em a priori}, and the randomization minimizes the effect of discretization on the solution. We show that the adopted methodology provides an advantageous way to diminish the surface bias of the inverse solution. The results also suggest that a noise level below 80 Eotvos will be sufficient for the detection of internal voids and high density anomalies, if a sparse set of measurements can be obtained from a close-enough distance to the target., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables, accepted to Icarus

Distant long-period comet C/2017 K2 has been outside the planetary region of the solar system for 3 Myr, negating the possibility that heat retained from the previous perihelion could be responsible for its activity. This inbound comet is also too cold for water ice to sublimate and too cold for amorphous water ice, if present, to crystallize. C/2017 K2 thus presents an ideal target in which to investigate the mechanisms responsible for activity in distant comets. We have used Hubble Space Telescope to study the comet in the pre-perihelion distance range 13.8 to 15.9 AU. The coma maintains a logarithmic surface brightness gradient $m = -1.010\pm$0.004, consistent with steady-state mass loss. The absence of a radiation pressure swept tail indicates that the effective particle size is large (0.1 mm) and the mass loss rate is $\sim$200 kg s$^{-1}$, remarkable for a comet still beyond the orbit of Saturn. Extrapolation of the photometry indicates that activity began in 2012.1, at 25.9$\pm$0.9 AU, where the blackbody temperature is only 55 K. This large distance and low temperature suggest that cometary activity is driven by the sublimation of a super-volatile ice (e.g.~CO), presumably preserved by K2's long-term residence in the Oort cloud. The mass loss rate can be sustained by CO sublimation from an area $\lesssim 2$ km$^2$, if located near the hot sub-solar point on the nucleus. However, while the drag force from sublimated CO is sufficient to lift millimeter sized particles against the gravity of the cometary nucleus, it is 10$^2$ to 10$^3$ times too small to eject these particles against inter-particle cohesion. Our observations thus require either a new understanding of the physics of inter-particle cohesion or the introduction of another mechanism to drive distant cometary mass loss. We show that the scattering phase functions of the coma and the nucleus of the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko measured by the Rosetta/OSIRIS instrument can be reproduced by a particle model involving clustered densely packed submicrometer-sized grains composed of organic material and larger micrometer-sized silicate grains. The simulated and measured coma phase functions suggest that near the nucleus scattering is dominated by large particles, and the size distribution of dust particles varies with time and/or local coma environment. Further, we show that the measured nucleus phase function is consistent with the coma phase function by modelling a nucleus-sized object consisting of the same particles that explain the coma phase functions.

The phase function of the dust coma of comet 67P has been determined from Rosetta/OSIRIS images \citep{Bertini17}. This function show a deep minimum at phase angles near 100$^\circ$, and a strong backscattering enhancement. These two properties cannot be reproduced by regular models of cometary dust, most of them based on wavelength-sized and randomly-oriented aggregate particles. We show, however, that an ensamble of oriented elongated particles of a wide variety of aspect ratios, with radii $r \gtrsim$10 $\mu$m, and whose long axes are perpendicular to the direction of the solar radiation, are capable of reproducing the observed phase function. We present Hubble Space Telescope observations of the active asteroid (and Geminid stream parent) 3200 Phaethon when at its closest approach to Earth (separation 0.07 AU) in 2017 December. Images were recorded within $\sim$1\degr~of the orbital plane, providing extra sensitivity to low surface brightness caused by scattering from a large-particle trail. We placed an upper limit to the apparent surface brightness of such a trail at 27.2 magnitudes arcsecond$^{-2}$, corresponding to an in-plane optical depth $\le 3\times10^{-9}$. No co-moving sources brighter than absolute magnitude 26.3, corresponding to circular equivalent radius $\sim$12 m (albedo 0.12 assumed), were detected. Phaethon is too hot for near-surface ice to survive. We briefly consider the thermodynamic stability of deeply-buried ice, finding that its survival would require either a very small (regolith-like) thermal diffusivity ($< 10^{-8}$ m$^2$ s$^{-1}$), or the unexpectedly recent injection of Phaethon (timescale $\lesssim$ 10$^6$ yr) into its present orbit, or both., Comment: Improved the discussion of optical depth calculation and corrected an error in the previous version. 28 pages, 5 figures, Astronomical Journal, in press

The dust emission from active asteroids is likely driven by collisions, fast rotation, sublimation of embedded ice, and combinations of these. Characterising these processes leads to a better understanding of their respective influence on the evolution of the asteroid population. We study the role of fast rotation in the active asteroid 358P (P 2012/T1). We obtained two nights of deep imaging of 358P with SOAR/Goodman and VLT/FORS2. We derived the rotational light curve from time-resolved photometry and searched for large fragments and debris > 8 mm in a stacked, ultra-deep image. The nucleus has an absolute magnitude of m_R=19.68, corresponding to a diameter of 530 m for standard assumptions on the albedo and phase function of a C-type asteroid. We do not detect fragments or debris that would require fast rotation to reduce surface gravity to facilitate their escape. The unique inner-belt asteroid 311P/PANSTARRS (formerly P/2013 P5) is notable for its sporadic, comet-like ejection of dust in nine distinct epochs spread over $\sim$250 days in 2013. This curious behavior has been interpreted as the product of localized, equator-ward landsliding from the surface of an asteroid rotating at the brink of instability. We obtained new Hubble Space Telescope observations to directly measure the nucleus and to search for evidence of its rapid rotation. However, instead of providing photometric evidence for rapid nucleus rotation, our data set a lower limit to the lightcurve period, $P \ge$ 5.4 hour. The dominant feature of the lightcurve is a V-shaped minimum, $\sim$0.3 magnitudes deep, that is suggestive of an eclipsing binary. Under this interpretation, the time-series data are consistent with a secondary/primary mass ratio, $m_s/m_p \sim$ 1:6, a ratio of separation/primary radius, $r/r_p \sim$ 4 and an orbit period $\sim$0.8 days. These properties lie within the range of other asteroid binaries that are thought to be formed by rotational breakup. While the lightcurve period is long, centripetal dust ejection is still possible if one or both components rotates rapidly ($\lesssim$ 2 hour) and has a small lightcurve variation because of azimuthal symmetry. Indeed, radar observations of asteroids in critical rotation reveal "muffin-shaped" morphologies which are closely azimuthally symmetric and which show minimal lightcurves. Our data are consistent with 311P being a close binary in which one or both components rotates near the centripetal limit. The mass loss in 2013 suggests that breakup occurred recently and could even be on-going. The processes that led to the formation of the planetary bodies in the Solar System are still not fully understood. Using the results obtained with the comprehensive suite of instruments on-board ESA's Rosetta mission, we present evidence that comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko likely formed through the gentle gravitational collapse of a bound clump of mm-sized dust aggregates ("pebbles"), intermixed with microscopic ice particles. This formation scenario leads to a cometary make-up that is simultaneously compatible with the global porosity, homogeneity, tensile strength, thermal inertia, vertical temperature profiles, sizes and porosities of emitted dust, and the steep increase in water-vapour production rate with decreasing heliocentric distance, measured by the instruments on-board the Rosetta spacecraft and the Philae lander. Our findings suggest that the pebbles observed to be abundant in protoplanetary discs around young stars provide the building material for comets and other minor bodies., Comment: accepted by MNRAS

The asteroids are primitive solar system bodies which evolve both collisionally and through disruptions due to rapid rotation [1]. These processes can lead to the formation of binary asteroids [2-4] and to the release of dust [5], both directly and, in some cases, through uncovering frozen volatiles. In a sub-set of the asteroids called main-belt comets (MBCs), the sublimation of excavated volatiles causes transient comet-like activity [6-8]. Torques exerted by sublimation measurably influence the spin rates of active comets [9] and might lead to the splitting of bilobate comet nuclei [10]. The kilometer-sized main-belt asteroid 288P (300163) showed activity for several months around its perihelion 2011 [11], suspected to be sustained by the sublimation of water ice [12] and supported by rapid rotation [13], while at least one component rotates slowly with a period of 16 hours [14]. 288P is part of a young family of at least 11 asteroids that formed from a ~10km diameter precursor during a shattering collision 7.5 million years ago [15]. Here we report that 288P is a binary main-belt comet. It is different from the known asteroid binaries for its combination of wide separation, near-equal component size, high eccentricity, and comet-like activity. We review the evidence for buried ice in the asteroid belt; specifically the questions around the so-called Main Belt Comets (MBCs). We summarise the evidence for water throughout the Solar System, and describe the various methods for detecting it, including remote sensing from ultraviolet to radio wavelengths. We review progress in the first decade of study of MBCs, including observations, modelling of ice survival, and discussion on their origins. We then look at which methods will likely be most effective for further progress, including the key challenge of direct detection of (escaping) water in these bodies., Comment: Invited review for Astron. We present an analysis of new and published data on P/2013 R3, the first asteroid detected while disintegrating. Thirteen discrete components are measured in the interval between UT 2013 October 01 and 2014 February 13. We determine a mean, pair-wise velocity dispersion amongst these components of $\Delta v = 0.33\pm0.03$ m s$^{-1}$ and find that their separation times are staggered over an interval of $\sim$5 months. Dust enveloping the system has, in the first observations, a cross-section $\sim$30 km$^2$ but fades monotonically at a rate consistent with the action of radiation pressure sweeping. The individual components exhibit comet-like morphologies and also fade except where secondary fragmentation is accompanied by the release of additional dust. We find only upper limits to the radii of any embedded solid nuclei, typically $\sim$100 to 200 m (geometric albedo 0.05 assumed). Combined, the components of P/2013 R3 would form a single spherical body with radius $\lesssim$400 m, which is our best estimate of the size of the precursor object. The observations are consistent with rotational disruption of a weak (cohesive strength $\sim$50 to 100 N m$^{-2}$) parent body, $\sim$400 m in radius. Estimated radiation (YORP) spin-up times of this parent are $\lesssim$1 Myr, shorter than the collisional lifetime. If present, water ice sublimating at as little as 10$^{-3}$ kg s$^{-1}$ could generate a torque on the parent body rivaling the YORP torque. Under conservative assumptions about the frequency of similar disruptions, the inferred asteroid debris production rate is $\gtrsim$10$^3$ kg s$^{-1}$, which is at least 4% of the rate needed to maintain the Zodiacal Cloud., Comment: 44 pages, 13 figures, accepted by Astronomical Journal

We present initial time-resolved observations of the split comet 332P/Ikeya-Murakami taken using the Hubble Space Telescope. Our images reveal a dust-bathed cluster of fragments receding from their parent nucleus at projected speeds in the range 0.06 to 3.5 m s$^{-1}$ from which we estimate ejection times from October to December 2015. The number of fragments with effective radii $\gtrsim$20 m follows a differential power law with index $\gamma$ = -3.6$\pm$0.6, while smaller fragments are less abundant than expected from an extrapolation of this power-law. We argue that, in addition to losses due to observational selection, torques from anisotropic outgassing are capable of destroying the small fragments by driving them quickly to rotational instability. Specifically, the spin-up times of fragments $\lesssim$20 m in radius are shorter than the time elapsed since ejection from the parent nucleus. The effective radius of the parent nucleus is $r_e \le$ 275 m (geometric albedo 0.04 assumed). This is about seven times smaller than previous estimates and results in a nucleus mass at least 300 times smaller than previously thought. The mass in solid pieces, $2\times10^9$ kg, is about 4% of the mass of the parent nucleus. As a result of its small size, the parent nucleus also has a short spin-up time. Hubble Space Telescope observations of active asteroid 324P/La Sagra near perihelion show continued mass loss consistent with the sublimation of near-surface ice. Isophotes of the coma measured from a vantage point below the orbital plane are best matched by steady emission of particles having a nominal size $a \sim$ 100 $\mu$m. The inferred rate of mass loss, $dM_d/dt \sim$0.2 kg s$^{-1}$, can be supplied by sublimation of water ice in thermal equilibrium with sunlight from an area as small as 930 m$^2$, corresponding to about 0.2\% of the nucleus surface. Observations taken from a vantage point only 0.6\degr~from the orbital plane of 324P set a limit to the velocity of ejection of dust in the direction perpendicular to the plane, $V_{\perp} <$ 1 m s$^{-1}$. Short-term photometric variations of the near-nucleus region, if related to rotation of the underlying nucleus, rule out periods $\le$ 3.8 hr and suggest that rotation probably does not play a central role in driving the observed mass loss. We estimate that, in the previous orbit, 324P lost about 4$\times$10$^7$ kg in dust particles, corresponding to 6$\times$10$^{-5}$ of the mass of a 550 m spherical nucleus of assumed density $\rho$ = 1000 kg m$^{-3}$. If continued, mass loss at this rate would limit the lifetime of 324P to $\sim$1.6$\times$10$^4$ orbits (about 10$^5$ yr). To survive for the 100 Myr to 400 Myr timescales corresponding, respectively, to dynamical and collisional stability requires a duty cycle $2\times 10^{-4} \le f_d \le 8\times 10^{-4}$. We present Hubble Space Telescope and Keck 10 meter telescope observations of active asteroid 288P/300163 (2006 VW139) taken to examine ejected dust. The nucleus is a C-type object with absolute magnitude $H_V$ = 17.0$\pm$0.1 and estimated diameter $\sim$2.6 km (for assumed visual geometric albedo $p_V$ = 0.04). Variations in the brightness of the nucleus at the 10% to 15% level are significant in both 2011 December and 2012 October but we possess too few data to distinguish variations caused by activity from those caused by rotation. The dust scattering cross-section in 2011 December is $\sim$40 km$^2$, corresponding to a dust mass $\sim$9$\times$10$^6$ kg (88 $\mu$m mean particle radius assumed). The full width at half maximum of the debris sheet varies from $\sim$100 km near the nucleus to $\sim$1000 km 30arcsec (40,000 km) east of it. Dust dynamical models indicate ejection speeds between 0.06 and 0.3 m s$^{-1}$, particle sizes between 10 and 300 $\mu$m and an inverse square-root relation between particle size and velocity. Overall, the data are most simply explained by prolonged, low velocity ejection of dust, starting in or before 2011 July and continuing until at least 2011 October. These properties are consistent with the sublimation of near-surface ice aided by centrifugal forces. We present Hubble Space Telescope observations of active asteroid 313P/Gibbs (formerly P/2014 S4) taken over the five month interval from 2014 October to 2015 March. This object has been recurrently active near perihelion (at 2.4 AU) in two different orbits, a property that is naturally explained by the sublimation of near surface ice but which is difficult to reconcile with other activity mechanisms. We find that the mass loss peaks near 1 kg s$^{-1}$ in October and then declines over the subsequent months by about a factor of five, at nearly constant heliocentric distance. This decrease is too large to be caused by the change in heliocentric distance during the period of observation. However, it is consistent with sublimation from an ice patch shadowed by local topography, for example in a pit like those observed on the nuclei of short-period comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. While no unique interpretation is possible, a simple self shadowing model shows that sublimation from a pit with depth to diameter ratio near 1/2 matches the observed rate of decline of the activity, while deeper and shallower pits do not. We estimate the nucleus radius to be 700$\pm$100 m (geometric albedo 0.05 assumed). Measurements of the spatial distribution of the dust were obtained from different viewing geometries. They show that dust was ejected continuously not impulsively, that the effective particle size is large, $\sim$50 $\mu m$, and that the ejection speed is $\sim$2.5 m s$^{-1}$. The total dust mass ejected is $\sim$10$^7$ kg, corresponding to $\sim$10$^{-5}$ of the nucleus mass. The observations are consistent with partially shadowed sublimation from $\sim$10$^4$ m$^2$ of ice, corresponding to $\sim$0.2\% of the nucleus surface. While having a comet-like appearance, P/2012 F5 (Gibbs) has an orbit native to the Main Asteroid Belt, and physically is a km-sized asteroid which recently (mid 2011) experienced an impulsive mass ejection event. Here we report new observations of this object obtained with the Keck II telescope on UT 2014 August 26. The data show previously undetected 200-m scale fragments of the main nucleus, and reveal a rapid nucleus spin with a rotation period of 3.24 $\pm$ 0.01 hr. The existence of large fragments and the fast nucleus spin are both consistent with rotational instability and partial disruption of the object. To date, many fast rotators have been identified among the minor bodies, which, however, do not eject detectable fragments at the present-day epoch, and also fragmentation events have been observed, but with no rotation period measured. P/2012 F5 is unique in that for the first time we detected fragments and quantified the rotation rate of one and the same object. The rapid spin rate of P/2012 F5 is very close to the spin rates of two other active asteroids in the Main Belt, 133P/Elst-Pizarro and (62412), confirming the existence of a population of fast rotators among these objects. But while P/2012 F5 shows impulsive ejection of dust and fragments, the mass loss from 133P is prolonged and recurrent. Some asteroids eject dust, producing transient, comet-like comae and tails; these are the active asteroids. The causes of activity in this newly-identified population are many and varied. They include impact ejection and disruption, rotational instabilities, electrostatic repulsion, radiation pressure sweeping, dehydration stresses and thermal fracture, in addition to the sublimation of asteroidal ice. These processes were either unsuspected or thought to lie beyond the realm of observation before the discovery of asteroid activity. We present initial observations of the newly-discovered active asteroid 313P/Gibbs (formerly P/2014 S4), taken to characterize its nucleus and comet-like activity. The central object has a radius $\sim$0.5 km (geometric albedo 0.05 assumed). We find no evidence for secondary nuclei and set (with qualifications) an upper limit to the radii of such objects near 25 m, assuming the same albedo. Both aperture photometry and a morphological analysis of the ejected dust show that mass-loss is continuous at rates $\sim$0.2 to 0.4 kg s$^{-1}$, inconsistent with an impact origin. Large dust particles, with radii $\sim$50 to 100 $\mu$m, dominate the optical appearance. At 2.4 AU from the Sun, the surface equilibrium temperatures are too low for thermal or desiccation stresses to be responsible for the ejection of dust. No gas is spectroscopically detected (limiting the gas mass loss rate to $<$1.8 kg s$^{-1}$). However, the protracted emission of dust seen in our data and the detection of another episode of dust release near perihelion, in archival observations from 2003, are highly suggestive of an origin by the sublimation of ice. Coincidentally, the orbit of 313P/Gibbs is similar to those of several active asteroids independently suspected to be ice sublimators, including P/2012 T1, 238P/Read and 133P/Elst-Pizarro, suggesting that ice is abundant in the outer asteroid belt., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures, accepted The Astronomical Journal

We examine the development of the active asteroid 311P/PANSTARRS (formerly, 2013 P5) in the period from 2013 September to 2014 February using high resolution images from the Hubble Space Telescope. This multi-tailed object is characterized by a single, reddish nucleus of absolute magnitude $H \ge$ 18.98$\pm$0.10, corresponding to an equal-area sphere of radius $\le$200$\pm$20 m (for assumed geometric albedo 0.29$\pm$0.09). We set an upper limit to the radii of possible companion nuclei at $\sim$10 m. The nucleus ejected debris in nine discrete episodes, spread irregularly over a nine month interval, each time forming a distinct tail. Particles in the tails range from about 10 $\mu$m to at least 80 mm in radius, and were ejected at speeds $<$1 m s$^{-1}$. The ratio of the total ejected dust mass to the nucleus mass is $\sim$3$\times$10$^{-5}$, corresponding to a global surface layer $\sim$2 mm thick, or to a deeper layer covering a smaller fraction of the surface. The observations are incompatible with an origin of the activity by impact or by the sublimation of entrapped ice. This object appears to be shedding its regolith by rotational (presumably YORP-driven) instability. Long-term fading of the photometry (months) is attributed to gradual dissipation of near-nucleus dust. Photometric variations on short timescales ($<$0.7 hr) are probably caused by fast rotation of the nucleus. However, because of limited time coverage and dilution of the nucleus signal by near-nucleus dust, we have not been able to determine the rotation period., Comment: 37 pages, 12 figures

Splitting of the nuclei of comets into multiple components has been frequently observed but, to date, no main-belt asteroid has been observed to break-up. Using the Hubble Space Telescope, we find that main-belt asteroid P/2013 R3 consists of 10 or more distinct components, the largest up to 200 m in radius (assumed geometric albedo of 0.05) each of which produces a coma and comet-like dust tail. A diffuse debris cloud with total mass roughly 2x10^8 kg further envelopes the entire system. The velocity dispersion among the components is about V = 0.2 to 0.5 m/s, is comparable to the gravitational escape speeds of the largest members, while their extrapolated plane-of-sky motions suggest break-up between February and September 2013. The broadband optical colors are those of a C-type asteroid. We find no spectral evidence for gaseous emission, placing model-dependent upper limits to the water production rate near 1 kg/s.
