Abstract

Cuscuton field theory is an extension of general relativity that does not introduce additional propagating degrees of freedom, or violate relativistic causality. We construct a general geometric description of the cuscuton field theory by introducing curvature corrections to both the volume (potential) and the surface (kinetic) terms in the original cuscuton action. Our assumptions involve a stack of spacelike branes, separated by 4-dimensional bulks. We conjecture that the cuscuton, initially a discrete field, becomes continuous in the limit, there are many such transitions. From this we derive an effective action for the cuscuton theory and show that at the quadratic level our theory propagates only the two tensorial degrees of freedom., Comment: 20 pages and 1 figure

Abstract

In this paper, which is of programmatic rather than quantitative nature, we aim to further delineate and sharpen the future potential of the LISA mission in the area of fundamental physics. Given the very broad range of topics that might be relevant to LISA, we present here a sample of what we view as particularly promising directions, based in part on the current research interests of the LISA scientific community in the area of fundamental physics. We organize these directions through a "science-first" approach that allows us to classify how LISA data can inform theoretical physics in a variety of areas. For each of these theoretical physics classes, we identify the sources that are currently expected to provide the principal contribution to our knowledge, and the areas that need further development. The classification presented here should not be thought of as cast in stone, but rather as a fluid framework that is amenable to change with the flow of new insights in theoretical physics., Comment: 22 pages, 1 figure, to appear in General Relativity and Gravitation

Abstract

Light scalar fields are expected to arise in theories of high energy physics (such as string theory), and find phenomenological motivations in dark energy, dark matter, or neutrino physics. However, the coupling of light scalar fields to ordinary (or dark) matter is strongly constrained from laboratory, solar system, and astrophysical tests of fifth force. One way to evade these constraints in dense environments is through the chameleon mechanism, where the field's mass steeply increases with ambient density. Consequently, the chameleonic force is only sourced by a thin shell near the surface of dense objects, which significantly reduces its magnitude. In this paper, we argue that thin-shell conditions are equivalent to "conducting" boundary conditions in electrostatics. As an application, we use the analogue of the method of images to calculate the back-reaction (or self-force) of an object around a spherical gravitational source. Using this method, we can explicitly compute the violation of equivalence principle in the outskirts of galactic haloes (assuming an NFW dark matter profile): Intermediate mass satellites can be slower than their larger/smaller counterparts by as much as 10% close to a thin shell., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Structure formation provides a strong test of any cosmic acceleration model because a successful dark energy model must not inhibit {\black or overpredict} the development of observed large-scale structures. Traditional approaches to studies of structure formation in the presence of dark energy or a modified gravity implement a modified Press-Schechter formalism, which relates the linear overdensities to the abundance of dark matter haloes it at the same time. We critically examine the universality of the Press-Schechter formalism for different cosmologies, and show that the halo abundance is best correlated with spherical linear overdensity at 94% of collapse (or observation) time. We then extend this argument to ellipsoidal collapse (which decreases the fractional time of best correlation for small haloes, and show that our results agree with deviations from modified Press-Schechter formalism seen in simulated mass functions. This provides a novel universal prescription to measure linear density evolution, based on current and future observations of cluster (or dark matter) halo mass function. Abstract

A new and powerful probe of the origin and evolution of structures in the Universe has emerged and been actively developed over the last decade. In the coming decade, non-Gaussianity, i.e., the study of non-Gaussian contributions to the correlations of cosmological fluctuations, will become an important probe of both the early and the late Universe. Specifically, it will play a leading role in furthering our understanding of two fundamental aspects of cosmology and astrophysics: (i) the physics of the very early universe that created the primordial seeds for large-scale structures, and (ii) the subsequent growth of structures via gravitational instability and gas physics at later times. To date, observations of fluctuations in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and the Large-Scale Structure of the Universe (LSS) have focused largely on the Gaussian contribution as measured by the two-point correlations (or the power spectrum) of density fluctuations. However, an even greater amount of information is contained in non-Gaussianity and a large discovery space therefore still remains to be explored. Many observational probes can be used to measure non-Gaussianity, including CMB, LSS, gravitational lensing, Lyman-alpha forest, 21-cm fluctuations, and the abundance of rare objects such as clusters of galaxies and high-redshift galaxies. Not only does the study of non-Gaussianity maximize the science return from a plethora of present and future cosmological experiments and observations, but it also carries great potential for important discoveries in the coming decade., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure. Abstract

We present measurements of the angular cross-correlation between luminous red galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the cosmic microwave background temperature maps from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe. We find a statistically significant achromatic positive correlation between these two data sets, which is consistent with the expected signal from the late Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect. We do not detect any anti-correlation on small angular scales as would be produced from a large Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect, although we do see evidence for some SZ effect for our highest redshift samples. Assuming a flat universe, our preliminary detection of the ISW effect provides independent physical evidence for the existence of dark energy., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. Letters (6 pages)

Abstract

We consider the possibility that massive primordial black holes are the dominant form of dark matter. Black hole formation generates entropy fluctuations that adds a Poisson noise to the matter power spectrum. We use Lyman-alpha forest observations to constrain this Poisson term in matter power spectrum, then we constrain the mass of black holes to be less than few times 10^4 solar mass. Abstract

We write a non-relativistic Lagrangian for a hierarchical universe. The equations of motion are solved numerically and the evolution of the fractal dimension is obtained for different initial conditions. We show that our model is homogeneous at the time of the last scattering, but evolves into a self-similar universe with a remarkably constant fractal dimension. Abstract

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) has the potential to reveal wonders about the fundamental theory of nature at play in the extreme gravity regime, where the gravitational interaction is both strong and dynamical. In this white paper, the Fundamental Physics Working Group of the LISA Consortium summarizes the current topics in fundamental physics where LISA observations of gravitational waves can be expected to provide key input. We provide the briefest of reviews to then delineate avenues for future research directions and to discuss connections between this working group, other working groups and the consortium work package teams. These connections must be developed for LISA to live up to its science potential in these areas.

Abstract

In this paper, which is of programmatic rather than quantitative nature, we aim to further delineate and sharpen the future potential of the LISA mission in the area of fundamental physics. Given the very broad range of topics that might be relevant to LISA, we present here a sample of what we view as particularly promising directions, based in part on the current research interests of the LISA scientific community in the area of fundamental physics. We organize these directions through a "science-first" approach that allows us to classify how LISA data can inform theoretical physics in a variety of areas. For each of these theoretical physics classes, we identify the sources that are currently expected to provide the principal contribution to our knowledge, and the areas that need further development. The classification presented here should not be thought of as cast in stone, but rather as a fluid framework that is amenable to change with the flow of new insights in theoretical physics.

12. Preschoolers do not generalize dominance roles from one situation to another

Abstract

Recognizing social rank as a third-party observer is an important social skill. With regard to dominance—the coercive form of social rank—infants expect the winner of a zero-sum conflict over one type of resource to win again when competing with the same agent over a different type of resource (Mascaro & Csibra, 2012). However, it is unclear whether preschoolers also expect dominant-subordinate roles to generalize across situations. The current study tested this question with preschoolers (3-5 years, n = 280, 140 female, USA, 80% White) and adults (n = 200, 99 female, USA, 75% White). Preschoolers and adults recognized the dominant puppet in two resource conflict situations (a toy to play with, a bench to sit on) in which one puppet won by force and the other lost (Exp. 1). Preschoolers did not expect the puppet who had been dominant in one situation (e.g. toy) to win again in a new situation (e.g. bench) (Exp. 2a and 2b). Adults, like infants, thought the dominant puppet would win again (Exp. 2b). When the concepts of dominance and fairness were primed (Exp. 3), preschoolers’ inferences about the winner diverged: Children who had been primed with dominance thought the subordinate would win, while those who had been primed with fairness responded at chance level. This finding, together with converging support from children’s justifications, suggests that preschoolers are particularly sensitive to the unfairness of dominance interactions, and indicates that this consideration affects their inferences about the stability of dominance.

14. Trusting information from friends: Adults expect it but preschoolers do not

Abstract

It often seems easier to trust information from friends than strangers. Do preschoolers and adults expect such bias towards friends? Presented with a main character, her best friend, and a stranger, participants judged who was worthy of trust from the main character’s perspective (third-person) as well as their own (first-person). Adults (n = 128, 55 female) expected the main character to trust her friend even if she had been previously inaccurate, while basing their own judgments on accuracy. In contrast, four- and five-year-olds (n = 128, 62 female) thought that the main character would be like themselves and care only about accuracy. Thus, while adults incorporate both friendship and accuracy into trust judgments, preschoolers fail to see that friendship matters.

Abstract

In this paper, which is of programmatic rather than quantitative nature, we aim to further delineate and sharpen the future potential of the LISA mission in the area of fundamental physics. Given the very broad range of topics that might be relevant to LISA,we present here a sample of what we view as particularly promising fundamental physics directions. We organize these directions through a “science-first” approach that allows us to classify how LISA data can inform theoretical physics in a variety of areas. For each of these theoretical physics classes, we identify the sources that are currently expected to provide the principal contribution to our knowledge, and the areas that need further development. The classification presented here should not be thought of as cast in stone, but rather as a fluid framework that is amenable to change with the flow of new insights in theoretical physics.

Abstract

Five experiments explored the apparent discontinuity between infants’ success at inferring affiliation from observed imitation (Powell & Spelke, 2017), and four-year-olds’ failure on the same inference (Over & Carpenter, 2015). Experiment 1 tested whether children younger than age 4 (i.e., 3-year-olds) have an explicit, verbalizable, concept of imitation. We showed children three characters performing different body movements. The central character (copier) consistently imitated another character (the model), but not the third one (non-model). Three-year-olds could answer who the copier was “copying,” thus demonstrating a lexicalized concept of imitation (Exp. 1). Adults spontaneously inferred that the copier’s affiliation lies with the model over the non-model and that she will continue to copy the same model in the future (Exp. 2), but preschoolers’ success at these two inferences was extremely limited, just barely above chance, and showed no improvement from ages three to five (Exp. 3). Nonetheless, preschoolers succeeded at making correct inferences when we primed the concept of imitation either non-lexically by drawing attention to the similarity between the copier’s and model’s actions (Exp. 4), or both lexically and non-lexically in the context of separate characters uninvolved in the test questions (Exp. 5). Taken together, the findings provide evidence of continuity between the representations of imitation from infancy through the preschool years to adulthood, but in the context of the present experiments, young preschool children do not always spontaneously encode the central characters preferential imitation of one model over another.

Abstract

A new and powerful probe of the origin and evolution of structures in the Universe has emerged and been actively developed over the last decade. In the coming decade, non-Gaussianity, i.e., the study of non-Gaussian contributions to the correlations of cosmological fluctuations, will become an important probe of both the early and the late Universe. Specifically, it will play a leading role in furthering our understanding of two fundamental aspects of cosmology and astrophysics: (i) the physics of the very early universe that created the primordial seeds for large-scale structures, and (ii) the subsequent growth of structures via gravitational instability and gas physics at later times. To date, observations of fluctuations in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and the Large-Scale Structure of the Universe (LSS) have focused largely on the Gaussian contribution as measured by the two-point correlations (or the power spectrum) of density fluctuations. However, an even greater amount of information is contained in non-Gaussianity and a large discovery space therefore still remains to be explored. Many observational probes can be used to measure non-Gaussianity, including CMB, LSS, gravitational lensing, Lyman-alpha forest, 21-cm fluctuations, and the abundance of rare objects such as clusters of galaxies and high-redshift galaxies. Not only does the study of non-Gaussianity maximize the science return from a plethora of present and future cosmological experiments and observations, but it also carries great potential for important discoveries in the coming decade., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure. Abstract

We write a non-relativistic Lagrangian for a hierarchical universe. The equations of motion are solved numerically and the evolution of the fractal dimension is obtained for different initial conditions. We show that our model is homogeneous at the time of the last scattering, but evolves into a self-similar universe with a remarkably constant fractal dimension. Abstract

K. G. Arun et al., The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) has the potential to reveal wonders about the fundamental theory of nature at play in the extreme gravity regime, where the gravitational interaction is both strong and dynamical. In this white paper, the Fundamental Physics Working Group of the LISA Consortium summarizes the current topics in fundamental physics where LISA observations of gravitational waves can be expected to provide key input. We provide the briefest of reviews to then delineate avenues for future research directions and to discuss connections between this working group, other working groups and the consortium work package teams. These connections must be developed for LISA to live up to its science potential in these areas., E. 30. Trusting information from friends: Adults expect it but preschoolers do not.

Abstract

As adults, we might understand that beliefs often spread because people are strongly influenced by their friends, family, and other social connections. However, do we think those influences are strong enough to overrule direct evidence of a friend's unreliability? And do preschoolers expect people to show such biases toward friends and to privilege friendship over reliability? Across three experiments, we explored whether friendship influences the evaluations of trust when others learn labels for novel objects as well as personal opinions. After watching scenes involving a main character, her best friend, and a stranger, preschoolers and adults judged who would be trusted for information from the main character's perspective (third person) as well as their own (first person). Adults ( n = 128, 55 female, recruited online from across the United States) expected the main character to trust information from her friend even if she had been previously inaccurate, while basing their own first-person judgments on accuracy. In contrast, 4- and 5-year-olds ( n = 128, 62 female, from the United States) thought that the main character would be like themselves and prioritize accuracy over friendship. Further, preschoolers expected the main character to trust her (inaccurate) friend and (accurate) stranger equally when forming personal opinions. Thus, young children, unlike adults, do not expect others' epistemic trust to privilege friendship with the speaker over accuracy information. Abstract

Purpose . We present a microscopic mechanism that accounts for the outward burst of 'cold' ion species (IS) in a high-energy particle track due to coupling with 'hot' non-ion species (NIS). IS refers to radiolysis products of ionized molecules, whereas NIS refers to non-ionized excitations of molecules in a medium. The interaction is mediated by a quantized field of acoustic phonons, a channel that allows conversion of thermal energy of NIS to kinetic energy of IS, a flow of heat from the outer to the inner core of the track structure. Methods . We perform step-by-step Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of ionizing radiation track structures in water to score the spatial coordinates and energy depositions that form IS and NIS at atto-second time scales. We subsequently calculate the resulting temperature profiles of the tracks with MC track structure simulations and verify the results analytically using the Rutherford scattering formulation. These temperature profiles are then used as boundary conditions in a series of multi-scale atomistic molecular dynamic (MD) simulations that describe the sudden expansion and enhanced diffusive broadening of tracks initiated by the non-equilibrium spectrum of high-energy IS. We derive a stochastic coarse-grained Langevin equation of motion for IS from first-principle MD to describe the irreversible femto-second flow of thermal energy pumping from NIS to IS, mediated by quantized fields of acoustic phonons. A pair-wise Lennard-Jones potential implemented in a classical MD is then employed to validate the results calculated from the Langevin equation. Results . We demonstrate the coexistence of 'hot' NIS with 'cold' IS in the radiation track structures right after their generation. NIS, concentrated within nano-scale volumes wrapping around IS, are the main source of intensive heat-waves and the outward burst of IS due to femto-second time scale IS-NIS coupling. By comparing the transport of IS coupled to NIS with identical configurations of non-interacting IS in thermal equilibrium at room temperature, we demonstrate that the energy gain of IS due to the surrounding hot nanoscopic volumes of NIS significantly increases their effective diffusion constants. Comparing the average track separation and the time scale calculated for a deposited dose of 10 Gy and a dose rate of 40 Gy s -1 , typical values used in FLASH ultra high dose rate (UHDR) experiments, we find that the sudden expansion of tracks and ballistic transport proposed in this work strengthens the hypothesis of inter-track correlations recently introduced to interpret mitigation of the biological responses at the FLASH-UHDR (Abolfath et al 2020 Med. Phys. 47 , 6551-6561). Conclusions . The much higher diffusion constants predicted in the present model suggest higher inter-track chemical reaction rates at FLASH-UHDR, as well as lower intra-track reaction rates. This study explains why research groups relying on the current Monte Carlo frameworks have reported negligible inter-track overlaps, simply because of underestimation of the diffusion constants. We recommend incorporation of the IS-NIS coupling and heat exchange in all MC codes to enable these tool-kits to appropriately model reaction-diffusion rates at FLASH-UHDR. Novelty . 32. Children's Inferences About Friendship and Shared Preferences Based on Reported Information.

Abstract

Two experiments (total N = 195) examined third-party inferences about friendship and shared preferences from reported dyadic information. Four-year-olds (N = 48) inferred friendship between individuals based on reports of prosocial behavior, and similarity, but not based on arbitrary links. Children privileged prosocial behavior over similarity when asked to adjudicate between the two. Adults (N = 120) were tested online and showed the same overall pattern of inferences. Furthermore, 4-year-olds (N = 27) expected individuals who had engaged in prosocial behavior to be playmates as well as friends, and to share preferences for novel games, but not novel foods. These findings shed crucial light on preschoolers' third-party friendship inferences, and add to our knowledge of their concept of friendship., (© 2019 Society for Research in Child Development.)

33. From Planck Data to Planck Era: Observational Tests of Holographic Cosmology.

Abstract

We test a class of holographic models for the very early Universe against cosmological observations and find that they are competitive to the standard cold dark matter model with a cosmological constant (ΛCDM) of cosmology. These models are based on three-dimensional perturbative superrenormalizable quantum field theory (QFT), and, while they predict a different power spectrum from the standard power law used in ΛCDM, they still provide an excellent fit to the data (within their regime of validity). By comparing the Bayesian evidence for the models, we find that ΛCDM does a better job globally, while the holographic models provide a (marginally) better fit to the data without very low multipoles (i.e., l≲30), where the QFT becomes nonperturbative. Observations can be used to exclude some QFT models, while we also find models satisfying all phenomenological constraints: The data rule out the dual theory being a Yang-Mills theory coupled to fermions only but allow for a Yang-Mills theory coupled to nonminimal scalars with quartic interactions. Lattice simulations of 3D QFTs can provide nonperturbative predictions for large-angle statistics of the cosmic microwave background and potentially explain its apparent anomalies.

35. Does the planck mass run on the cosmological-horizon scale?

Abstract

Einstein's theory of general relativity contains a universal value of the Planck mass. However, one may envisage that in alternative theories of gravity the effective value of the Planck mass (or Newton's constant), which quantifies the coupling of matter to metric perturbations, can run on the cosmological-horizon scale. In this Letter, we study the consequences of a glitch in the Planck mass from subhorizon to superhorizon scales. We show that current cosmological observations severely constrain this glitch to less than 1.2%.
