Shifting understandings and ongoing conversations about race, celebrity, and protest in the twenty-first century call for a closer examination of the evolution of dissent by black celebrities and their reception in the public sphere. This book focuses on the way the mainstream and black press have covered cases of controversial political dissent by African American celebrities from Paul Robeson to Kanye West. Jackson considers the following questions: 1) What unique agency is available to celebrities with racialized identities to present critiques of American culture? 2) How have journalists in both the mainstream and black press limited or facilitated this agency through framing? What does this say about the varying role of journalism in American racial politics? 3) How have framing trends regarding these figures shifted from the mid-twentieth century to the twenty-first century? Through a series of case studies that also includes Eartha Kitt, Sister Souljah, and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, Jackson illustrates the shifting public narratives and historical moments that both limit and enable African American celebrities in the wake of making public politicized statements that critique the accepted racial, economic, and military systems in the United States.

This project explores attitudes of males of different ages toward black and white celebrity endorsers. Using advertisements for a men’s fragrance, the authors determine that although males of various age cohorts have similar perceptions of a celebrity’s credibility, likability and attractiveness, once paired with a product in an advertisement, attitude measures diverge. Older white male consumers have significantly more positive attitudes toward products endorsed by white celebrities versus black celebrities while young males make no such distinction. A key explanation for this difference lies in the self-focused value orientation of younger males. Multiple study iterations replicate results and reinforce findings. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This essay theorizes the contours of a post-feminist gender regime that utilizes figures such as Beyoncé in order to hail women as self-governing subjects who make the right choices with respect to career, marriage, motherhood, and the disciplining of their bodies. As a black woman, the narrative about Beyoncé's life and choices has specific implications; it positions professional black women as ideal citizens and mothers and also seeks to reconfigure and normalize representations of the black family. The body, specifically the black female body, plays an important role in attempting to transform and normalize these representations. This essay offers one of the few examinations of black women's relationship to post-feminism. Although post-feminism has been conceptualized in ways that ignore black women, I aim to demonstrate why further consideration of black women's relationship to post-feminism is needed. It is my contention that with successful black women increasingly in the public eye, what they say about feminism and how they relate to feminist politics have important implications for how all women, but especially young black women, engage in types of activism that go beyond placing value on individualism at the expense of the collective. Abstract

The image of old racial order has been vitiated by the rise of a new variety of African American celebrities: acquisitive, ambitious, flamboyantly successful and individualistic; the kind of people who are interested in channelling their energies into their own careers, rather into indeterminate causes such as racism. In Beyonce, the United States - and perhaps the world - has a symbol of glamour and unrestrained consumption that offers, if not a solution, then an apparent salve to the enduring effects of racism. The argument advanced here is that Beyonce, singer, actor, entrepreneur, serial endorser and all-purpose celebrity, has risen in a post-9/11 era when race and racism were unwanted shibboleths and a new racial order was in construction. Early symbols of the new order were Bill Cosby and Oprah Winfrey. Beyonce, like Tiger Woods, Halle Berry and other African American A-list members, are its current representatives. Beyonce embodies a narrative, a living description of a culture in which race is a remnant of history and limitless consumer choice has become a substitute for equality. The analysis moves to an examination of how Beyonce emerged and developed into a recognisable brand, her principal marketing alter ego being 'Sasha Fierce'. The multiple products bearing her imprimatur and the revenue they generate suggest comparisons with a medium-size industry. Yet the most valuable product Beyonce sells is a particular conception of America - as a nation where history has been, if not banished, rendered insignificant. Her ability to do so is predicated on her ethnic ambiguity: she claims to be 'universal', yet slides comfortably into a familiar discourse of exoticism essayed by earlier black female performers. A refusal to conform to existing categories combined with an insistence on the primacy of the market makes Beyonce an exquisite commodity in a celebrity-fixated consumer culture although an unreliable indicator of black America. The evidence contrasts the image portrayed by Beyonce with that of other black Americans and concludes with the proposition that the 'dream' she purveys has a potent didactic message. Jackson's personal struggles throughout his life were instructive of how black people deal with racial problems.
