A comprehensive checklist of the marine flora from Faial Island, mid-north Atlantic, is still unavailable, despite the numerous works that gathered data around its coasts for over 150 years. This study brings together and harmonises all macroalgae collections and taxonomical records from multiple projects and teams over the last thirty years.The result is a list of taxonomic records and georeferenced species occurrence data that substantially increases our knowledge of the coastal Azorean marine biodiversity while providing key information for future ecological studies and to support local, marine management and conservation.A total of 2283 specimens belonging to 118 taxa of macroalgae are registered here, comprising 61 Rhodophyta, 26 Chlorophyta, 30 Ochrophyta (Phaeophyceae) and one Cyanophyta (Cyanobacteria). From these, 26 taxa are identified only at the genus level and 92 to species level (47 Rhodophyta, 21 Chlorophyta and 24 Ochrophyta). The list comprises 75 native species, 12 records of uncertain origin and five introductions (Caulerpa prolifera (Forsskål) J.V.Lamouroux, Caulerpa webbiana Montagne, Hydroclathrus tilesii (Endlicher) Santiañez & M.J.Wynne, Asparagopsis armata Harvey and Symphyocladia marchantioides (Harvey) Falkenberg). Codium elisabethiae O.C.Schmidt represents the only Macaronesian endemism known on the Island. Twenty-three species are newly recorded to the algal flora of the Island.

This work was done on 1996 and 1997, and presents an extremely valuable baseline to compare the recent and future changes on the insular shallow habitats of the Azorean islands. We examined the structure of the molluscan communities of the macroalgae Halopteris scoparia in São Miguel Island (Azores, Portugal). This island was chosen because it is the largest and the most populated of the archipelago, with polluted sites which are not common in the Azores. The relationship between the epifaunal assemblages and a set of environmental factors – geographical location (orientation), seawater temperature, depth, algal volume, degree of disturbance, and degree of exposure to the wave action – was investigated using distance-based redundancy analysis and significant variation in the distribution of richness of assemblages was found. Four environmental predictors were common to all the four analyses implemented (richness and assemblage structure using both AIC and BIC): algal volume (that correlates with algal dry weight), seawater temperature, coastal orientation and depth. Finally, the application in the Azores of this methodology favours a sampling program in Spring-Summer (when disturbance seems to be more susceptible to detection), and the use of H. scoparia in the subtidal zone, as the target alga is recommended due to its large covering of rocky shore substrates.

Abstract The common marmoset monkey (Callithrix jacchus) is a species of rising prominence in the neurosciences due to its small size, ease of handling, fast breeding, and its shared functional and structural brain characteristics with Old World primates. With increasing attention on modeling human brain diseases in marmosets, understanding how to deliver therapeutic or neurotropic agents to the marmoset brain noninvasively is of great preclinical importance. In other species, including humans, transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) aided by intravenously injected microbubbles has proven to be a transient, reliable, and safe method for disrupting the blood-brain barrier (BBB), allowing the focal passage of therapeutic agents that do not otherwise readily traverse the tight endothelial junctions of the BBB. The critical gap that we address here is to document parameters to disrupt the BBB reliably and safely in marmosets using tFUS. By integrating our marmoset brain atlases and the use of a marmoset-specific stereotactic targeting system, we conduct a series of systematic transcranial sonication experiments in nine marmosets. We demonstrate the effects of center frequency, acoustic pressure, burst period, and duration, establish a minimum microbubble dose, estimate microbubble clearance time, and estimate the duration that the BBB remains open to passage. Successful BBB disruption is reported in vivo with MRI-based contrast agents, as well as Evans blue staining assessed ex vivo. Histology (Hematoxylin and Eosin staining) and immunohistochemistry indicate that the BBB can be safely and reliably opened with the parameters derived from these experiments. The series of experiments presented here establish methods for safely, reproducibly, and focally perturbing the BBB using tFUS in the common marmoset monkey that can serve as a basis for noninvasive delivery of therapeutic or neurotropic agents.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a well-known and widespread imaging modality for neuroscience studies and the clinical diagnoses of neurological disorders, mainly due to its capability to visualize brain microstructures and quantify various metabolites. Additionally, its noninvasive nature makes possible the correlation of high-resolution MRI from ex vivo brain samples with histology, supporting the study of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease. However, the quality and resolution of ex vivo MRI highly depend on the availability of specialized radiofrequency coils with maximized filling factors for the different sizes and shapes of the samples to be studied. For instance, small, dedicated radiofrequency (RF) coils are not always commercially available in ultrahigh field whole-body MRI scanners. Even for ultrahigh field preclinical scanners, specific RF coils for ex vivo MRI are expensive and not always available. Here, we describe the design and construction of two RF coils based on the solenoid geometry for ex vivo MRI of human brain tissues in a 7T whole-body scanner and for ex vivo MRI of marmoset brain samples in a 9.4T preclinical scanner. We designed the 7T solenoid RF coil to maximize the filling factor of human brain samples conditioned on cassettes for histology, while the 9.4T solenoid was constructed to accommodate marmoset brain samples conditioned in 50 ml centrifuge tubes. Both solenoid designs operate in transceiver mode. The measured B1+ maps show a high level of homogeneity in the imaging volume of interest, with a high signal-to-noise ratio over the imaging volume. High-resolution (80 µm in plane, 500 µm slice thickness) images of human brain samples were acquired with the 7T solenoid, while marmoset brain samples were acquired with an isotropic resolution of 60 µm using the 9.4T solenoid coil.

Objective: To analyze the effects of hospital cardiorespiratory physical therapy protocol on the functional capacity and quality of life of patients submitted to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Methods: From January to December 2019, bilateral dynamometry, Manovacuometry and Ventilometry, peak expiratory flow ''Peak Flow'', 6-min walk test (6MWT), SF-36 Quality of Life Questionnaire and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) were applied in patients who have undergone an allogeneic or autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), pre-conditioning (initial evaluation) and pre-discharge (final evaluation). The patients were submitted to an intervention protocol, consisting of aerobic training, muscle strengthening and respiratory muscle training, between the two assessments. Results: 29 patients were enrolled in the study and 24 (83%) completed all procedure. Myeloablative and reduced intensity conditioning were performed in 89.6% and 10.4%, respectively; 17 (58%) patients have undergone an autologous HSCT; 10 (35%) identical related allogeneic HSCT, and 2 (7%) haploidentical allogeneic HSCT. The median number of interventions per patient was 3 (1–9). A decreasing in the right and left dynamometry (p ≤ 0.0001 and 0.002, respectively) and, also in the distance covered in the 6MWT (p = 0.004), was observed after HSCT. There was no significant difference in respiratory muscle strength, quality of life and fatigue sensation. Conclusion: Cardiorespiratory rehabilitation can preserve functional capacity and quality of life.

Mapping brain connections is critical for decoding brain functions. Here, the authors present an integrated resource of awake resting-state fMRI and neuronal tracing data of marmosets to understand structural-functional relationships of brain connections.

Comparisons of frontoparietal connectivity between marmosets, rats and grey squirrels suggest the formation of a common frontoparietal network architecture among arboreal species (grey squirrels and marmosets) that might reflect convergent evolution.

Abstract Introduction Our limited understanding of the mechanisms that trigger the emergence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) has contributed to the lack of interventions that stop, prevent, or fully treat this disease. We believe that the development of a non‐human primate model of AD will be an essential step toward overcoming limitations of other model systems and is crucial for investigating primate‐specific mechanisms underlying the cellular and molecular root causes of the pathogenesis and progression of AD. Methods A new consortium has been established with funding support from the National Institute on Aging aimed at the generation, characterization, and validation of Marmosets As Research Models of AD (MARMO‐AD). This consortium will study gene‐edited marmoset models carrying genetic risk for AD and wild‐type genetically diverse aging marmosets from birth throughout their lifespan, using non‐invasive longitudinal assessments. These include characterizing the genetic, molecular, functional, behavioral, cognitive, and pathological features of aging and AD. Results The consortium successfully generated viable founders carrying PSEN1 mutations in C410Y and A426P using CRISPR/Cas9 approaches, with germline transmission demonstrated in the C410Y line. Longitudinal characterization of these models, their germline offspring, and normal aging outbred marmosets is ongoing. All data and resources from this consortium will be shared with the greater AD research community. Discussion By establishing marmoset models of AD, we will be able to investigate primate‐specific cellular and molecular root causes that underlie the pathogenesis and progression of AD, overcome limitations of other model organisms, and support future translational studies to accelerate the pace of bringing therapies to patients.

The corpus callosum (CC), the largest brain commissure and the primary white matter pathway for interhemispheric cortical connectivity, was traditionally viewed as a predominantly homotopic structure, connecting mirror areas of the cortex. However, new studies verified that most callosal commissural fibers are heterotopic. Recently, we reported that ~75% of the callosal connections in the brains of mice, marmosets, and humans are heterotopic, having an essential role in determining the global properties of brain networks. In the present study, we leveraged high-resolution diffusion-weighted imaging and graph network modeling to investigate the relationship between heterotopic and homotopic callosal fibers in human subjects and in a spontaneous mouse model of Corpus Callosum Dysgenesis (CCD), a congenital developmental CC malformation that leads to widespread whole-brain reorganization. Our results show that the CCD brain is more heterotopic than the normotypical brain, with both mouse and human CCD subjects displaying highly variable heterotopicity maps. CCD mice have a clear heterotopicity cluster in the anterior CC, while hypoplasic humans have strongly variable patterns. Graph network-based connectivity profile showed a direct impact of heterotopic connections on CCD brains altering several network-based statistics. Our collective results show that CCD directly alters heterotopic connections and brain connectivity.

Remyelination is crucial to recover from inflammatory demyelination in multiple sclerosis (MS). Investigating remyelination in vivo using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is difficult in MS, where collecting serial short-interval scans is challenging. Using experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) in common marmosets, a model of MS that recapitulates focal cerebral inflammatory demyelinating lesions, we investigated whether MRI is sensitive to, and can characterize, remyelination. In six animals followed with multisequence 7 T MRI, 31 focal lesions, predicted to be demyelinated or remyelinated based on signal intensity on proton density-weighted images, were subsequently assessed with histopathology. Remyelination occurred in four of six marmosets and 45% of lesions. Radiological-pathological comparison showed that MRI had high statistical sensitivity (100%) and specificity (90%) for detecting remyelination. This study demonstrates the prevalence of spontaneous remyelination in marmoset EAE and the ability of in vivo MRI to detect it, with implications for preclinical testing of pro-remyelinating agents.

The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is quickly gaining traction as a premier neuroscientific model. However, considerable progress is still needed in understanding the functional and structural organization of the marmoset brain to rival that documented in longstanding preclinical model species, like mice, rats, and Old World primates. To accelerate such progress, we present the Marmoset Functional Brain Connectivity Resource (marmosetbrainconnectome.org), currently consisting of over 70 h of resting-state fMRI (RS-fMRI) data acquired at 500 µm isotropic resolution from 31 fully awake marmosets in a common stereotactic space. Three-dimensional functional connectivity (FC) maps for every cortical and subcortical gray matter voxel are stored online. Users can instantaneously view, manipulate, and download any whole-brain functional connectivity (FC) topology (at the subject- or group-level) along with the raw datasets and preprocessing code. Importantly, researchers can use this resource to test hypotheses about FC directly – with no additional analyses required – yielding whole-brain correlations for any gray matter voxel on demand. We demonstrate the resource's utility for presurgical planning and comparison with tracer-based neuronal connectivity as proof of concept. Complementing existing structural connectivity resources for the marmoset brain, the Marmoset Functional Brain Connectivity Resource affords users the distinct advantage of exploring the connectivity of any voxel in the marmoset brain, not limited to injection sites nor constrained by regional atlases. With the entire raw database (RS-fMRI and structural images) and preprocessing code openly available for download and use, we expect this resource to be broadly valuable to test novel hypotheses about the functional organization of the marmoset brain.

The oldest reference to marine life in Formigas Islets (oriental group of the Azores archipelago) goes back to the 16th century. Nevertheless, their macroalgal flora is poorly known, the published information mainly resulting from occasional collections of sporadic visitors. To overcome this and contribute to the knowledge of Azorean macroalgal flora at both local and regional scales, a thorough investigation was conducted in 1990 and 1991 under two expeditions promoted by the Marine Biology Research Group of the Department of Biology, University of the Azores. Collections and presence data recordings were undertaken at the littoral and sublittoral levels down to approximately 40 m, in an area of approximately 0.04 km2. This paper lists the taxonomic records and provides information regarding each species’ ecology and occurrence on the Islets’ littoral.A total of 320 specimens are registered (including taxa identified only at generic level) belonging to 90 taxa of macroalgae, from which 70 were diagnosed at species level. The confirmed species comprise 39 Rhodophyta, 12 Chlorophyta and 19 Ochrophyta (Phaeophyceae), distributed in 22 orders (13 Rhodophyta, 3 Chlorophyta and 6 Ochrophyta) and 37 families (24 Rhodophyta, 6 Chlorophyta and 7 Ochrophyta). Sixty-one species represent new records for the Islets, from which Botryocladia macaronesica Afonso-Carrillo, Sobrino, Tittley & Neto and Laurencia viridis Gil-Rodriguez & Haroun are Macaronesian endemisms. Most species are native to the Azores, but six have an uncertain origin and four are introduced (the Rhodophyta Asparagopsis armata Harvey; Laurencia dendroidea J.Agardh; Neoizziella divaricata (C.K.Tseng) S.-M.Lin, S.-Y.Yang & Huisman and the Ochrophyta Hydroclathrus tilesii (Endlicher) Santiañez & M.J.Wynne).

As for many other Azorean Islands, the macroalgal flora of Terceira (belonging to the central group of the archipelago) is poorly known, the published information reflecting occasional collections of sporadic visitors to the island. In order to overcome this and contribute to improve the knowledge of Azorean macroalgal flora at both local and regional scales, a thorough investigation was conducted. Both collections and presence data recordings were undertaken at the littoral and sublittoral levels down to approximately 40 m around the island, covering a total area of approximately 49 km2. This paper lists the taxonomic records and provides information on each species’ ecology and occurrence on the Island’s littoral.A total of 418 specimens (including taxa identified only to genus level) belonging to 147 taxa of macroalgae, comprising 95 Rhodophyta, 33 Chlorophyta and 19 Ochrophyta (Phaeophyceae) are registered. Of these, 113 were identified to species level (73 Rhodophyta, 24 Chlorophyta and 16 Ochrophyta), encompassing 35 new records for the Island (27 Rhodophyta, 6 Chlorophyta and 2 Ochrophyta). Most species are native, including the Macaronesian endemisms Codium elisabethiae O.C.Schmidt, Millerella tinerfensis (Seoane-Camba) S.M.Boo & J.M.Rico and Phyllophora gelidioides P.Crouan & H.Crouan ex Karsakoff. Eight species are introduced and 15 have uncertain origin.

The macroalgal flora of Graciosa (central group of Azores archipelago) is poorly known, with only 116 species recorded so far (authors personal data). The published information reflects occasional collections from sporadic field visits to the Island. To overcome this, a thorough investigation under the Expedition “GRACIOSA/2004”, the Campaigns “PADEL/2006”, “MACROBIOLMOL/2014” and “PIMA-BALA/2017” involving sample collecting and presence data recording, was undertaken over an area of 19 km2 encompassing littoral and sublittoral levels down to about 40 m around the Island. This paper lists the taxonomic records and provides information on species ecology and occurrence around the Island improving the knowledge of the Azorean macroalgal flora at both local and regional scales.A total of 1692 specimens belonging to 250 taxa of macroalgae (and including 55 taxa identified only at the genus level) are registered, comprising 166 Rhodophyta, 36 Chlorophyta and 48 Ochrophyta (Phaeophyceae). From these, 195 are identified to the species level (126 Rhodophyta, 31 Chlorophyta and 38 Ochrophyta) and comprise 156 native, 20 of uncertain origin and 14 introductions to the Island. Predaea feldmannii subsp. azorica Gabriel is an Azorean endemic, whereas Codium elisabethiae O.C. Schmidt, Botryocladia macaronesica Afonso-Carrillo, Sobrino, Tittley & Neto, Phyllophora gelidioides P.Crouan & H.Crouan ex Karsakoff and Laurencia viridis Gil-Rodríguez & Haroun represent Macaronesian endemics. Seventy-nine species are newly recorded to the algal flora of the Island.

The default mode network (DMN) is a core brain network in humans. Here, the authors show that marmoset primates also possess a DMN-like network but, unlike in the human DMN, dlPFC is a more prominent node than mPFC, suggesting mPFC is more developed in humans than in other primates.

Objectives: To assess the risk profile and prophylactic measures for venous thromboembolism (VTE) in clinical patients in an intensive care unit and the role of clinical pharmacists in risk assessment and VTE prophylaxis. Method: Cross-sectional study in an intensive care unit (ICU) of a University Hospital, where data were collected from 76 patients, clinical and surgical, monitored by clinical pharmacists from September to December 2020. Patients admitted on weekends with a hospital stay of less than 24-48 hours, pediatric patients, pregnant women or those who were already undergoing therapeutic treatment with anticoagulants were not included in the study. Data were captured from the analysis of medical prescription, clinical history and pharmaceutical evolution contained in electronic medical records. An assessment of the risk profile was performed using the Padua Scores for clinical patients and Caprini Score for surgical patients and the adequacy of VTE prophylaxis assessed according to the guidelines of the American College of Chest Physicians. Results: 76 patients were included, of which 64.7% were surgical and 35.3% clinical. Of the total number of patients, 67 (88.3%) were classified as high risk, of which 64.2% were surgical patients and 35.8% were clinical. As for pharmacological prophylaxis for VTE, 44.7% of the patients evaluated did not find prescribed chemoprophylaxis. As for the clinical performance of the pharmacist, in 13.1% of the adopted patients, there was a need for intervention to include pharmacological prophylaxis, with 13.4% at high risk of VTE. Conclusions: Patients admitted to the ICU have a high risk of developing VTE. Prophylactic measures for VTE are still inadequate in both clinical and Clinical patients, evidencing the importance of the role of the clinical pharmacist in the process of evaluating and implementing prophylactic measures for this condition.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of the application of the FASTHUG-MAIDENS mnemonic by clinical pharmacists to optimize critically ill patients’ pharmacotherapy. Methods: Cross-sectional study performed on an adult intensive care unit of an University Hospital, between august and november 2019, where 155 patients were followed by three clinical pharmacists during hospital stay. Patients who stayed less than 24 hours in the hospital or whose stay was during weekends or holidays were excluded. The interventions were performed together with a multidisciplinary team using FASTHUG-MAIDENS, as well as technical analysis of medical prescription and patients’ clinical evaluation. The clinical evaluation included analysis of laboratory tests, nursing records and medical prescription, all registered in an institutional spreadsheet. The pharmaceutical interventions were registered in the pharmaceutical section of both physic and electronic medical records, and the data were later evaluated, classified, and submitted to descriptive analytical analysis. Results: 1.145 pharmaceutical interventions were performed, with an acceptance rate of 99,3%. The number of pharmaceutical interventions were increased by 104,4% with the application of the FASTHUG-MAIDENS mnemonic, compared to the period before the research. The main interventions performed were: inclusion of a drug (25,2%), exclusion of a drug (17,9%), dose adjustment (12,2%), change of the administration timetable to avoid intravenous incompatibility (11,4%), inclusion of infusion rate (7,3%), dilution adequacy (5,8%), inclusion of reconstitution (3,5%), microbiological culture request (3,4%), drug interaction monitoring (2,7%), adequacy of infusion rate (2,6%) and others (7,4%).Pharmaceutical interventions showed clinical (96,9%), preventive (99,3%) and economic (21,6%) impact. Conclusion: The application of the FASTHUG-MAIDENS mnemonic extended the pharmaceutical care to critically ill patients, enabling an accurate evaluation of the pharmacotherapy, clinically impacting critical patient care and reducing errors and adverse drug events.

The standard anatomical brain template provides a common space and coordinate system for visualizing and analyzing neuroimaging data from large cohorts of subjects. Previous templates and atlases for the common marmoset brain were either based on data from a single individual or lacked essential functionalities for neuroimaging analysis. Here, we present new population-based in-vivo standard templates and tools derived from multi-modal data of 27 marmosets, including multiple types of T1w and T2w contrast images, DTI contrasts, and large field-of-view MRI and CT images. We performed multi-atlas labeling of anatomical structures on the new templates and constructed highly accurate tissue-type segmentation maps to facilitate volumetric studies. We built fully featured brain surfaces and cortical flat maps to facilitate 3D visualization and surface-based analyses, which are compatible with most surface analyzing tools, including FreeSurfer, AFNI/SUMA, and the Connectome Workbench. Analysis of the MRI and CT datasets revealed significant variations in brain shapes, sizes, and regional volumes of brain structures, highlighting substantial individual variabilities in the marmoset population. Thus, our population-based template and associated tools provide a versatile analysis platform and standard coordinate system for a wide range of MRI and connectome studies of common marmosets. These new template tools comprise version 3 of our Marmoset Brain Mapping Project and are publicly available via marmosetbrainmapping.org/v3.html.

The rapid adoption of marmosets in neuroscience has created a demand for three dimensional (3D) atlases of the brain of this species to facilitate data integration in a common reference space. We report on a new open access template of the marmoset cortex (the Nencki–Monash, or NM template), representing a morphological average of 20 brains of young adult individuals, obtained by 3D reconstructions generated from Nissl-stained serial sections. The method used to generate the template takes into account morphological features of the individual brains, as well as the borders of clearly defined cytoarchitectural areas. This has resulted in a resource which allows direct estimates of the most likely coordinates of each cortical area, as well as quantification of the margins of error involved in assigning voxels to areas, and preserves quantitative information about the laminar structure of the cortex. We provide spatial transformations between the NM and other available marmoset brain templates, thus enabling integration with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and tracer-based connectivity data. The NM template combines some of the main advantages of histology-based atlases (e.g. information about the cytoarchitectural structure) with features more commonly associated with MRI-based templates (isotropic nature of the dataset, and probabilistic analyses). The underlying workflow may be found useful in the future development of 3D brain atlases that incorporate information about the variability of areas in species for which it may be impractical to ensure homogeneity of the sample in terms of age, sex and genetic background.

The corpus callosum, the principal structural avenue for interhemispheric neuronal communication, controls the brain’s lateralization. Developmental malformations of the corpus callosum (CCD) can lead to learning and intellectual disabilities. Currently, there is no clear explanation for these symptoms. Here, we used resting-state functional MRI (rsfMRI) to evaluate the dynamic resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in both the cingulate cortex (CG) and the sensory areas (S1, S2, A1) in three marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) with spontaneous CCD. We also performed rsfMRI in 10 CCD human subjects (six hypoplasic and four agenesic). We observed no differences in the strength of rsFC between homotopic CG and sensory areas in both species when comparing them to healthy controls. However, in CCD marmosets, we found lower strength of quasi-periodic patterns (QPP) correlation in the posterior interhemispheric sensory areas. We also found a significant lag of interhemispheric communication in the medial CG, suggesting asynchrony between the two hemispheres. Correspondingly, in human subjects, we found that the CG of acallosal subjects had a higher QPP correlation than controls. In comparison, hypoplasic subjects had a lower QPP correlation and a delay of 1.6 s in the sensory regions. These results show that CCD affects the interhemispheric synchrony of both CG and sensory areas and that, in both species, its impact on cortical communication varies along the CC development gradient. Our study shines a light on how CCD misconnects homotopic regions and opens a line of research to explain the causes of the symptoms exhibited by CCD patients and how to mitigate them.

Corpus callosum dysgenesis (CCD) is a developmental brain condition in which some white matter fibers fail to find their natural course across the midplane, reorganizing instead to form new aberrant pathways. This type of white matter reorganization is known as long-distance plasticity (LDP). The present work aimed to characterize the Balb/c mouse strain as a model of CCD. We employed high-resolution anatomical MRI in 81 Balb/c and 27 C57bl6 mice to show that the Balb/c mouse strain presents a variance in the size of the CC that is 3.9 times higher than the variance of normotypical C57bl6. We also performed high-resolution diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in 8 Balb/c and found that the Balb/c strain shows aberrant white matter bundles, such as the Probst (5/8 animals) and the Sigmoid bundles (7/8 animals), which are similar to those found in humans with CCD. Using a histological tracer technique, we confirmed the existence of these aberrant bundles in the Balb/c strain. Interestingly, we also identified sigmoid-like fibers in the C57bl6 strain, thought to a lesser degree. Next, we used a connectome approach and found widespread brain connectivity differences between Balb/c and C57bl6 strains. The Balb/c strain also exhibited increased variability of global connectivity. These findings suggest that the Balb/c strain presents local and global changes in brain structural connectivity. This strain often presents with callosal abnormalities, along with the Probst and the Sigmoid bundles, making it is an attractive animal model for CCD and LDP in general. Our results also show that even the C57bl6 strain, which typically serves as a normotypical control animal in a myriad of studies, presents sigmoid-fashion pattern fibers laid out in the brain. These results suggest that these aberrant fiber pathways may not necessarily be a pathological hallmark, but instead an alternative roadmap for misguided axons. Such findings offer new insights for interpreting the significance of CCD-associated LDP in humans.

Large positive sulphur isotope excursions, recorded in the wake of the Marinoan glaciation have previously been interpreted assuming stable ocean sulphate concentrations. Here, using multiple sulphur isotopes, the authors instead suggest significant ocean sulphate drawdown, driven by increased pyrite burial.

INTRODUCTION: hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is associated with more respiratory infections due to immunosuppression. OBJECTIVE: this study aimed to verify the frequency of rhinosinusitis after HSCT, and the association between rhinosinusitis and chronic graft vs. host disease (GVHD) and type of transplantation, clinical treatment, surgical treatment, and survival. METHODS: this was a retrospective study in a tertiary university hospital. A total of 95 patients with hematological diseases undergoing HSCT between 1996 and 2011 were selected. RESULTS: chronic myeloid leukemia was the most prevalent disease. The type of transplant most often performed was the allogenic type (85.26%). The frequency of rhinosinusitis was 36%, with no difference between the autologous and the allogenic types. Chronic GVHD occurred in 30% of patients. Patients with GVHD had a higher frequency and recurrence of rhinosinusitis, in addition to more frequent need for endoscopic sinusectomy and decreased overall survival. CONCLUSION: there was a higher frequency of rhinosinusitis in HSCT and GVHD. The type of transplant does not appear to predispose to the occurrence of rhinosinusitis. GVHD seems to be an aggravating factor and requires a more stringent treatment.

In combination with advances in analytical methods, resting-state fMRI is allowing unprecedented access to achieve a better understanding of the network organization of the brain. Increasing evidence suggests that this architecture may incorporate highly functionally connected nodes, or hubs, and we have recently proposed local functional connectivity density (lFCD) mapping to identify highly-connected nodes in the human brain. Here we imaged awake nonhuman primates to test whether, like the human brain, the marmoset brain contains functional connectivity hubs. Ten adult common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) were acclimated to mild, comfortable restraint using individualized helmets. Following restraint training, resting BOLD data were acquired during eight consecutive 10 min scans for each subject. lFCD revealed prominent cortical and subcortical hubs of connectivity across the marmoset brain; specifically, in primary and secondary visual cortices (V1/V2), higher-order visual association areas (A19M/V6[DM]), posterior parietal and posterior cingulate areas (PGM and A23b/A31), thalamus, dorsal and ventral striatal areas (caudate, putamen, lateral septal nucleus, and anterior cingulate cortex (A24a). lFCD hubs were highly connected to widespread areas of the brain, and further revealed significant network-network interactions. These data provide a baseline platform for future investigations in a nonhuman primate model of the brain’s network topology.

A falta de critérios diagnósticos padronizados, amplamente utilizados, pode comprometer tanto a avaliação real da incidência da doença contra hospedeiro crônica bem como a correlação de sua gravidade com a taxa de mortalidade pós-transplante. Na I Reunião de Diretrizes da Sociedade Brasileira de Transplante de Medula Óssea, realizada em junho de 2009, o Grupo de Estudos de DECH Brasil - Seattle (GEDECH), baseado na realidade dos Centros brasileiros, apresentou as recomendações para diagnóstico, classificação, profilaxia e tratamento da doença enxerto contra hospedeiro crônica propostas pelo National Institutes of Health. Estas propostas incluíram padronização das características utilizadas no diagnóstico e ferramentas para a pontuação dos órgãos envolvidos e avaliação global da gravidade a serem utilizados em estudos clínicos da doença enxerto contra hospedeiro crônica. Estes critérios são úteis para uma melhor análise da incidência desta doença, além de poder avaliar a gravidade do comprometimento de um órgão ou sítio envolvido e a influência na mortalidade tardia do transplante. A profilaxia e os tratamentos propostos para esta importante complicação dos transplantes de células-tronco hematopoéticas foram discutidos e graduados de acordo com níveis de evidência estabelecidos pelo National Institutes of Health.The lack of widely-used standardized diagnostic criteria may impair both the true evaluation of chronic graft-versus-host disease and the correlation of its severity with transplant-related mortality. At the I Consensus of the Brazilian Society of Bone Marrow Transplantation - SBTMO that took place in June 2009, the Group of GVHD Studies Brazil-Seattle (GEDECH), presented the guidelines for diagnosis, classification, prophylaxis and treatment of chronic GVHD as proposed by the National Institutes of Health and based on the reality in Brazilian Centers. These proposals, including standardization of features used in diagnosis and tools to score involved organs and to assess the overall severity, should be used in clinical studies of chronic graft-versus-host disease. These criteria are useful to better analyze the incidence of this disease, in addition to evaluate the extension of the involvement of organs or the site affected and its influence on late transplantation mortality. Prophylaxis and treatment proposed for this important complication of hematopoietic stem cell transplantations were discussed and graded according to the levels of evidence established by the National Institutes of Health.

Competence building and management has been an issue frequently addressed in the literature, but it seldom has been referred to enterprises acting as part of production networks. The literature is still scarcer when the networks are international and include organisational units located in countries classifi ed as “emerging economies”. The main purpose of this study is to develop an analytical framework for the understanding of theconfi guration of organisational competences in the distinct participants of international production networks: multinationals and their subsidiaries organising local production networks. Different types of subsidiaries create local relationships whenever they act as part of a supply network to serve the local markets (interfi rm relationship). At the same time, every subsidiary keeps an internal relationship with its parent companyand respective headquarters (intrafi rm). This article focuses on the global networks of Telecommunications industry and more specifi cally in Brazil. The networks are essentiallyconstituted by Telecom Operators and Specialised Equipment Suppliers. The fi eld research was done in a sample of six subsidiaries operating in Brazil. In every fi rm we studied theway in which competences were built. An analytical framework was built to analyse the subsidiary-headquarters relationships, the role played by the subsidiary in the local supplynetworks and the specifi c features of the distinct types of subsidiaries. The outcomes show that, in the Brazilian context, where the lack of regulatory constraints allows that multinational corporations (MNCs) operate under a high level of autonomy, the structure of the local supply chain tends to refl ect the structure of the chain at global level. In that case, the way in which the global leader, the MNC that exerts the governance of the chain, considers competence formation at the headquarters and at the subsidiary level, as well as the competences that exist ingrained in fi rms and institutions at local level, are the main determinants of the overall confi guration of competences

As células-tronco hematopoéticas periféricas (CTP) praticamente substituíram a medula óssea (MO) como fonte de células-tronco hematopoéticas nos transplantes autólogos e nos últimos anos é usada com maior frequência nos alogênicos, particularmente no tratamento de doenças avançadas. A recuperação hematopoética, utilizando esta fonte de células, é mais rápida após a utilização de CTP comparada com a MO. O sangue de cordão umbilical surgiu como uma outra fonte de células-tronco hematopoéticas para a realização de transplantes. O risco mínimo para o doador e a rápida disponibilidade estão entre as vantagens desta fonte de células. A recuperação mais lenta de neutrófilos e plaquetas é a maior preocupação do ponto de vista clínico. A biópsia de MO pode ser uma importante ferramenta para a obtenção de informações em relação à recuperação hematopoética após os transplantes de células-tronco hematopoéticas (TCTH). A histopatologia da reconstituição hematopoética da MO, após um transplante de sangue de cordão umbilical, demonstra um atraso quando comparada com os transplantes de MO. Entretanto, ocorre uma recuperação hematopoética gradual e, tardiamente, não são observadas diferenças entre os transplantes com MO e sangue de cordão umbilical. A histologia da MO, por sua vez, não esclarece a origem genotípica da hematopoese pós-transplante. Assim, a análise do quimerismo tornou-se um instrumento importante para o acompanhamento da enxertia e é a base da intervenção terapêutica para evitar a rejeição do enxerto, manter a enxertia e tratar uma recidiva clínica iminente através da imunoterapia. Esta revisão destacará a recuperação hematopoética após a realização de um TCTH.Mobilized peripheral blood has replaced the use of bone marrow as a source of hematopoietic stem cells in most autologous transplants and is increasingly used in allogeneic transplants. The hematopoietic reconstitution after using mobilized peripheral blood is faster compared to bone marrow. Umbilical cord blood has emerged as another rich source of hematopoietic stem cells for transplantation. The minimal risk to the donor and the rapid availability are among the great advantages of this stem cell source. The slow recovery of neutrophil and platelet counts is the major clinical concern. Bone marrow biopsy is an important tool for obtaining information regarding the hematopoietic recovery after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The histopathological hematopoietic reconstitution of the bone marrow after umbilical cord blood transplantation is delayed compared to bone marrow transplantation. However, gradual hematopoietic recovery is seen, and afterwards no other differences comparing bone marrow and umbilical cord transplants are observed. Bone marrow histology does not elucidate the genotypic origin of post-transplant hematopoiesis. Hence, chimerism analysis has become an important instrument for engraftment surveillance, and is the basis for treatment intervention to avoid graft rejection, to maintain engraftment, and to treat clinical imminent relapse by immunotherapy. This review focuses on the hematopoietic recovery after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Using the overall survival (OS), disease free survival (DFS) and progression free survival (PFS), as well as associated toxicity, the purpose of this work was to evaluate the effectiveness of HDS followed by ASCT as salvage therapy. A retrospective analysis was performed of 106 patients with high grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma receiving HDS followed by ASCT, between 1998 and 2006. Median age was 45 years (Range: 8-65), with 66 (62%) men. Histopathological classification was: 78% DLBCL patients, 12% T and anaplastic and 9% Mantle cell lymphomas; 87% had B cell and 12% T cell lymphomas; 83% were stage III-IV (Ann Arbor Staging), 63% had B symptoms, 32% had bone marrow involvement, 62% bulky disease and 42% high-intermediate or high risk IPI. After HDCY, 9 patients died, 7 from toxicity and 2 from sepsis. Eighty patients underwent ASCT, 47% were in complete remission (CR) and 15% died, all from toxicity. Their OS was 45% over 8 years. During the follow-up, another 35 patients died [4 CR, 1 partial response (PR), 2 relapsed disease (RD) and 28 disease progression (DP)], 11 (31%) had not performed ASCT. OS was 37%; DFS was 49% and PFS 28%. OS by diagnosis was 42% for DLBCL, 40% for T-cell (8 y) and 20% for Mantle Cell (6 y) (P=NS). OS by B symptom patients was 22% vs. 58% (P=0.002) and PFS was 23% vs. 37% (P=0.03). Patients who achieved CR after HDCY (38) had significantly better OS and PFS (38% and 17%) than patients who remained in DP (PA proposta deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficácia da HDS seguida do transplante autólogo como terapia de salvamento através da sobrevida global, livre de doença e livre de progressão bem como sua toxicidade. A mediana de idade foi 45 anos (8-65); 62% homens; DLBCL, 78%; 12%, T e anaplásico e 9%, linfoma da zona do manto; 87%, células B; 83% estádios III-IV; 63% com sintomas B; 32% com infiltração da medula óssea ao diagnóstico; 62% com grande massa e 42% com IPI de alto risco ou intermediário. Após alta dose de ciclofosfamida (HDCY), nove pacientes faleceram. Oitenta pacientes realizaram o transplante, sendo que 47% estavam em RC e 15% faleceram devido à toxicidade. A sobrevida global foi de 45% em oito anos para estes pacientes. Trinta e cinco pacientes não realizaram o transplante por causas diversas. Sobrevida global para todos os pacientes foi de 42%, DLBCL, 40%; T-cell, 40% e zona do manto, 20% (P=NS). Dados do Registro Internacional de Transplante de Medula Óssea, International Bone Marrow Transplant Registry (IBMTR) contribuem para o progresso do transplante de medula óssea (TMO) em todo o mundo. Neste artigo relatamos a experiência brasileira em leucemia mielóide aguda e comparamos os resultados do TMO com os dados internacionais. Foi realizado um estudo retrospectivo com dados de tratamento de LMA com o TMO de 16 instituições brasileiras. A análise estatística dos transplantes da modalidade autogênica (TMO auto) e alogênica (TMO alo) foi realizada com o método de Kaplan-Meier e log-rank. Todos os valores de p foram bicaudados. Foram avaliados os dados de 731 pacientes (205 TMO auto e 526 TMO alo). A mediana de sobrevida global dos pacientes submetidos ao TMO auto foi superior à dos submetidos ao TMO alo (1.035 vs 466 dias, p=0,0012). A origem das células-tronco (OCT) no TMO alo em 73% dos pacientes foi de medula óssea (CTMO), em 23% de sangue periférico (CTSP) e em 4% de cordão umbilical. No TMO auto, a OCT foi 63% de CTSP, 22% CTMO e 15% de ambas as fontes. A OCT não teve impacto na sobrevida global (SG). Não houve diferença na SG também entre os pacientes segundo a classificação FAB no TMO alo, mas os pacientes com LMA M3 com o TMO auto tiveram SG longa. Como esperado, a principal causa de óbito entre os pacientes do TMO auto foi relacionada à recidiva de doença (60%), enquanto no TMO alo as principais causas foram a doença enxerto versus hospedeiro e infecções (38%). Em ambos os grupos foi observada SG mais longa nos pacientes tratados em primeira remissão completa (1RC) quando comparados aos de segunda remissão (2RC) e outras fases (pData from the International Bone Marrow Transplant Registry (IBMTR) contribute for the improvement of Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) worldwide. We studied the Brazilian experience in BMT for AML to compare this with international data. We performed a retrospective study by sending questionnaires to 16 BMT centers regarding clinical and treatment variables. Statistical analyses concerning autologous BMT (autoBMT) and allogeneic BMT (alloBMT) were performed using the Kaplan-Meier method and the log-rank test. All p-values were two-tailed. We collected data from 731 patients (205 autoBMT and 526 alloBMT). Median overall survival (OS) for autoBMT patients was longer than alloBMT patients (1035 vs. 466 days, p=0.0012). AlloBMT stem cell source (SCS): 73% bone marrow stem cell (BMSC), 23% peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) and 4% umbilical cord blood. Este estudo foi realizado para investigar se os níveis séricos de sIL-2R, TNF-alfa, IFN-gama, IL-6, IL-10 e TGF-beta1 estavam associados com o desenvolvimento de DECH (Doença do Enxerto Contra o Hospedeiro) aguda. Os níveis de citocinas foram seqüencialmente mensurados por Elisa em 13 pacientes que haviam sido submetidos ao transplante alogênico de células progenitoras hematopoiéticas. Os níveis de sIL-2R e IL-10 da 1ª a 15ª semanas pós-transplante foram significativamente maiores no grupo que desenvolveu DECH aguda que naquele sem a doença. Os níveis de sIL-2R aumentaram em direta correlação com a pega do enxerto e ao tempo do DECH aguda, enquanto os níveis de IL-10 aumentaram transitoriamente pós-transplante. A média da concentração de TNF-alfa nas primeiras semanas após o transplante foi maior no grupo que desenvolveu DECH aguda. Além disso, uma queda dos níveis de TGF-beta1 após a pega esteve significativamente associada à DECH aguda. Nenhuma correlação foi encontrada entre DECH aguda e as outras citocinas investigadas. Estes resultados suportam a idéia de que um balanço entre as citocinas derivadas de linfócitos T auxiliadores do tipo 1 e 2 pode ser importante no desenvolvimento e controle da DECH aguda. Embora os níveis de sIL-2R, TNF-alfa, IL-10 e TGF-beta1 tenham sido correlacionados com a DECH aguda, os níveis de sIL-2R ao tempo da pega podem prover um melhor parâmetro para a detecção precoce de DECH aguda após o transplante alogênico.This study was performed to investigate whether the serum levels of sIL-2R, TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma, IL-6, IL-10, and TGF-beta1 are associated with the development of acute GVHD. Serum cytokine levels were sequentially measured by sandwich Enzyme Linked-Immuno-Sorbent Assay (Elisa) in 13 patients who had received full match allogeneic stem cell transplantation. Serum sIL-2R and IL-10 levels from the 1st to the 15th week post transplantation were significantly higher in the group who developed acute GVHD than in the group without acute GVHD. Soluble IL-2R levels increased in direct correlation to engraftment and onset of acute GVHD, while IL-10 levels increased transiently following transplantation. The mean TNF-alpha concentration in the first weeks after transplantation was augmented in the group that developed acute GVHD. Furthermore, a drop in TGF-beta1 levels after the engraftment was significantly associated to acute GVHD. No correlation was found between acute GVHD and the other evaluated cytokines. These results support the idea that a balance between cytokines derived from type 1 and type 2 T-helper cells may be important in the development and control of acute GVHD. Although sIL-2R, TNF-alpha, IL-10, and TGF-beta1 levels, correlated with acute GVHD, sIL-2R levels at the engraftment may provide a better parameter for the early detection of acute GVHD after allogeneic stem cell transplantation.

Uma das principais características da nova economia é a transição da eficiência individual para a eficiência coletiva. A competitividade é, e será cada vez mais, relacionada ao desempenho de redes interorganizacionais e não de empresas isoladas. Ao mesmo tempo, a formação dessas redes tem forte dimensão locacional, associada ao movimento de internacionalização das operações das grandes corporações transnacionais. Do ponto de vista de economias emergentes como a brasileira, importantes mudanças estão tendo lugar, como conseqüência do posicionamento de suas empresas nessas novas redes interorganizacionais internacionais. Este é o foco deste estudo. Um modelo analítico foi desenvolvido para a avaliação de quais setores industriais apresentam potencial para se tornarem competitivos internacionalmente, por demonstrarem possuir as competências organizacionais necessárias. O referencial conceitual foi construído a partir da idéia de que a participação numa rede interorganizacional depende das competências organizacionais desenvolvidas pela empresa e que essa participação vai implicar mudanças na definição de sua estratégia competitiva. A aplicação do modelo foi operacionalizada em um amplo survey da indústria no país. Os resultados permitem realizar uma primeira identificação do posicionamento das empresas em redes internacionais assim como avaliar a competitividade em seus diferentes setores industriais.One of the key features of the new economy is the change from individual to collective efficiency. The main determinant of the successful delivery of the goods and services demanded by global or regional markets is the joint performance of firms networked as strategic alliances, production or value chains or industrial clusters. The starting point for the development of this study was the idea that participation in an entrepreneurial network influences the conditions for the establishment of the firms' strategies and the formation of competencies. Searching for empirical evidences for that argument, we developed a survey (490 respondents) about the recent evolution of industry in Brazil to see how local firms are redefining their strategies, organization and building relationships to survive and compete in a globalised and networked economy. The outcomes of the research reinforce the importance of networks as a basic concept for the analysis of competitiveness at firm and aggregate levels. Regarding the new organizational architecture of the Brazilian industry, what was observed was the widespread alignment of local firms into value chains led by TNC's and their subsidiaries, a limited number of strategic alliances, and a significant number of isolated firms, unable to respond to the demands of the new competition.

The waterfalls of the Presidente Figueiredo municipality represent a fascinating natural scenery of northeast state of Amazonas, northern Brazil. The falls, generally less than 10m high, are developed on siliciclastic rocks of the Nhamundá (Lower Silurian), and Manacapuru (Upper Silurian - Lower Devonian) formations. Morphological and structural analyses of these features indicate that most of them originated through Quaternary neotectonics and are installed in NE-trending normal fault escarpments. Waterfalls also developed within pseudokarstic features, but are less frequent. The origin of the Presidente Figueiredo waterfalls probably goes back to the Neogene, when the region was submitted to laterization processes associated with a humid climate and a dense rainforest. These conditions favored the development of caves in quartzarenites of the Nhamundá Formation. During the Quaternary, the region was subjected to NE-trending normal faulting which displaced laterite layers, rivers and streams giving rise to waterfalls. These climatic and tectonic phenomena promoted intense relief dissection, as indicated by fault escarpment retreat and cave dismantlement, responsible for the present-day morphologic configuration.As cachoeiras da região de Presidente Figueiredo constituem um dos mais fascinantes cenários naturais do nordeste do Estado do Amazonas, norte do Brasil. As quedas, geralmente com menos de 10m de altura, são desenvolvidas em rochas siliciclásticas das formações Nhamundá (Siluriano inferior) e Manacapuru (Siluriano superior-Devoniano inferior). Os estudos morfológico e estrutural dessas feições indicam que a maioria dessas quedas de água originaram-se por neotectônica quaternária e encontram-se instaladas em escarpas de falhas normais NE-SW. Ocorrem, ainda, com menor freqüência, cachoeiras evoluídas a partir de feições pseudocársticas. A origem das cachoeiras de Presidente Figueiredo provavelmente remonta ao Neógeno, quando a região estava sujeita aos processos de lateritização associados a um clima úmido em densa cobertura vegetal. Tais condições favoreceram o desenvolvimento de cavernas nos quartzo-arenitos da Formação Nhamundá. Posteriormente, durante o Quaternário, a região foi afetada por falhas normais NE-SW que deslocaram perfis lateríticos, rios e igarapés, originando as cachoeiras. Esses fenômenos climáticos e tectônicos proporcionaram uma intensa dissecação do relevo da região, indicado pelo recuo das escarpas de falha e pelo desmantelamento de cavernas, responsável pela configuração morfológica atual da região.

Nos últimos anos, vários agentes citoprotetores têm sido desenvolvidos para proteger células normais dos efeitos tóxicos da quimioterapia e radioterapia. O agente citoprotetor ideal seria aquele capaz de permitir a intensificação da dose dos quimioterápicos; proteger um amplo espectro de órgãos e tecidos quando do tratamento com diversos fármacos quimioterápicos; conferir proteção específica aos tecidos normais; preservar o efeito anti-tumoral e ter pequena e/ou controlável toxicidade e efeitos colaterais. Um citoprotetor deve ser administrado antes da quimioterapia citotóxica, ao contrário dos fatores estimuladores de colônia e do Leucovorin, que são administrados após quimioterapia como resgate à medula óssea e estimular a sua recuperação. Do ponto de vista prático existem três agentes citoprotetores: dois citoprotetores quimio-específicos (Dexrazoxane e Mesna) e um citoprotetor de amplo espectro (Amifostina). We searched for long-duration microlensing events originating from intermediate-mass black holes (BH) in the halo of the Milky Way, using archival data from the EROS-2 and MACHO photometric surveys towards the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We combined data from these two surveys to create a common database of light curves for 14.1 million objects in the LMC, covering a total duration of 10.6 years, with flux series measured in four wide passbands. We carried out a microlensing search on these light curves, complemented by the light curves of 22.7 million objects, observed only by EROS-2 or only by MACHO, over about 7 years, with flux series measured in only two passbands. A likelihood analysis, taking into account the LMC self-lensing and Milky Way disk contributions, allows us to conclude that compact objects with masses in the range 10-100 M cannot make up more than ~15% of a standard halo total mass (at a 95% confidence level). Our analysis sensitivity weakens for heavier objects, although we still rule out the possibility of ~50% of the halo being made of ~1000 M BHs. Combined with previous EROS results, an upper limit of ~15% of the total halo mass can be obtained for the contribution of compact halo objects in the mass range 10-6-102 M.

Impaired cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR), a predictive factor of imminent stroke, has been shown to be associated with carotid steno-occlusive disease. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, such as blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) and arterial spin labeling (ASL), have emerged as promising noninvasive tools to evaluate altered CVR with whole-brain coverage, when combined with a vasoactive stimulus, such as respiratory task or injection of acetazolamide. Under normal cerebrovascular conditions, CVR has been shown to be globally and homogenously distributed between hemispheres, but with differences among cerebral regions. Such differences can be explained by anatomical specificities and different biochemical mechanisms responsible for vascular regulation. In patients with carotid steno-occlusive disease, studies have shown that MRI techniques can detect impaired CVR in brain tissue supplied by the affected artery. Moreover, resulting CVR estimations have been well correlated to those obtained with more established techniques, indicating that BOLD and ASL are robust and reliable methods to assess CVR in patients with cerebrovascular diseases. Therefore, the present paper aims to review recent studies which use BOLD and ASL to evaluate CVR, in healthy individuals and in patients with carotid steno-occlusive disease, providing a source of information regarding the obtained results and the methodological difficulties.

La creatividad y el expertise son temas que están recibiendo mayor atención de los inves­tigadores en distintos campos del conocimiento. Atributos personales asociados a la alta producción creativa, factores que favorecen el desarrollo, la expresión de la creatividad y el expertise, así como los procesos implicados en el desarrollo de la alta competencia y la creatividad, son temas que han sido objeto de numerosos estudios. El presente estudio pre­senta contribuciones teóricas y estudios empíricos acerca de la creatividad y el expertise. Se describen los elementos comunes para el desarrollo de la creatividad y el expertise, así como las características de los ambientes educativos que los promueven, los modelos teóricos y estudios empíricos.
