This article explores the development of the #ArewaMeToo movement in Northern Nigeria. The study is contextualized within the theory of transnational feminism to argue that digital practices among non-Western women are more than merely a technological advancement and are significantly attuned to the socio-political climate of their societies. Therefore, as the #MeToo movement which began in the West goes global, women in Northern Nigerian have found a space to effect social change by resisting socio-cultural practices that challenge their social agency. Using the interview method, we articulate the uniqueness of #ArewaMeToo as a movement that is rooted in specific sociocultural challenges of Nigerian society. We also contend that ethnographic studies produce robust data to understand cultural specificity and enable solutions to address the problems raised by the movement. Teacher education in Nigeria today is highly recognized as the foundation of the nation's educational system, which contributes significantly to the development of other sectors in the nation's economy. The COVID-19 pandemic outbreak in Nigeria in the last twelve months has adversely affected teacher education programmes in Nigeria leading to suspension of academic and research activities in the institutions as a result of nation-wide lock down for seven months. This study specifically focuses on how Nigeria aims at achieving a buoyant and efficient economy and accelerated transformation through the production of high quality and well-motivated teachers for all levels of education by integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), into teacher education programmes. The study examined the impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on teacher education programmes in Nigeria and justified the inevitable need for integrating ICT into teacher programmes. It also identified the challenges of ICT utilization in teacher education programmes in Nigeria. It was recommended among others that the stakeholders must endeavour to provide the teacher education institutions with modern ICT tools and facilities for effective teaching, learning, conducting research and dissemination of information in the institutions, so as to achieve the lofty goals of teacher education in Nigeria.

Youth unemployment remains a major political and socioeconomic challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria, particularly given the region's young population. Literature points to two key barriers facing youth employment in the region, skills deficiencies and weak fundamentals that inhibit job creation and growth. Labor supply challenges are not unique to the younger population, and employment interventions adopted by the Nigerian government to combat these challenges in the formal wage sector, are primarily focused on graduates and non-graduates. This paper makes a case for encouraging the education system, employers, and governments to better prepare post-secondary students for the labor market before graduation through cooperative education. Cooperative education, a strategic policy response geared towards increasing youth employability and smoothing school-to-work transition, can help address the gap in the current suite of government intervention strategies and allow for a more proactive, dynamic and progressive response.

Abstract Many models depicting the spatial dimensions of poverty are based on cities in developed countries, raising questions about their appropriateness for urban spaces in developing countries. This study evaluates the spatial suitability of these models in understanding poverty distribution and informing alleviation efforts related to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). One in cities of developing nations. A grid sampling technique in ArcGIS 10.8 was used to select 1098 households across 56 wards in three mid-sized Nigerian cities. Household data were collected through structured questionnaires using GeoODK, and Maxar high-resolution imagery was used to assess urban building density. The Foster-Greer-Thorbecke (FGT) poverty indices and Pearson correlation were applied for analysis. Results showed that over 29 wards had a poverty incidence and gap index greater than 0.20, while poverty severity remained below 0.20 in most wards. High building density was more prevalent in the city’s interior. Significant correlations were found between the income poverty gap (p = 0.005, r = 0.367), poverty severity (p = 0.009, r = 0.346), and building density. The study concludes that these models are suitable for informing poverty alleviation policies in mid-sized cities of developing countries, especially Nigeria.

Abstract Background Pemetrexed is combined with cisplatin to treat cancer. Whether pemetrexed-cisplatin combination chemotherapy exacerbates cisplatin nephrotoxicity is unclear. Here, we investigated kidney injury in mice administered a non-lethal low-dose regimen of pemetrexed or cisplatin alone and compared it with a pemetrexed-cisplatin combination. Methods Mice were randomly divided into four groups and administered intraperitoneally the experimental drugs solubilized in captisol (sulfobutylether β-cyclodextrin). Group 1 received captisol, Group 2 pemetrexed (10 mg/kg), Group 3 cisplatin (1 mg/kg), and Group 4 pemetrexed (10 mg/kg) plus cisplatin (1 mg/kg). The mice were treated every other day for two weeks, three times per week. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was determined on the third day after the last treatment, followed by a necropsy. Results Whereas the relative kidney weight was comparable in the control vs. pemetrexed or cisplatin alone group, it was significantly increased in the combination group. Mice treated with cisplatin and pemetrexed-cisplatin combination exhibited reduced GFR. The pemetrexed-cisplatin combination caused significant increases in the plasma or urinary levels of kidney injury biomarkers, renal lipid peroxidation, and nitrosative stress compared with pemetrexed or cisplatin alone. Histopathology revealed that pemetrexed or cisplatin alone had minimal effects on the kidneys. By contrast, the pemetrexed-cisplatin combination caused tubular degeneration, dilatation, and granular casts. Live-cell imaging showed that the pemetrexed-cisplatin combination caused more severe apoptosis of primary renal epithelial cells than individual concentrations. Conclusions These findings suggest that combining pemetrexed and cisplatin causes oxidative kidney damage at individual doses that do not cause significant nephrotoxicity. Hence, the renal function of patients undergoing treatment with the pemetrexed-cisplatin combination needs extensive monitoring.

Abstract Salmonella Typhi is a major global concern in many low- and middle-income countries. In addition, the emergence and persistence of drug resistant strains has increased the impact of this disease. Plant metabolites have been explored traditionally and scientifically as antimicrobial agents. Thus, this study was designed to investigate the antimicrobial potential of acetone leaf fractions of H. indica against S. Typhi. Dried pulverized leaves of H. indica were extracted using cold maceration with acetone after defatting with n-hexane. The leaf extract was concentrated and subjected to column chromatography and eight bioactive fractions were identified. The fractions were characterized using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The fractions were evaluated for antibacterial activity against Salmonella Typhi in-vitro and in-silico. The lowest MIC was observed in fractions 20 and 21 (0.375 mg/mL) while the lowest MBC was observed in all fractions except 7, 17 and 18 (0.375 mg/mL). A ligand from fraction 8 had the highest binding affinity to Type I dehydroquinase (-3.4) and a ligand from fraction 7 had the highest binding affinity to Gyrase B (-11.2). This study concludes that the overall antimicrobial activity of the acetone leaf extract of H. indica provided evidence that it contains drug-like compounds that can be further explored as a drug candidate against S. Typhi.

Abstract Background Cholecystectomy and common bile duct exploration for biliary stone disease are common hepatobiliary surgeries performed by general surgeons in Nigeria. These procedures can be complicated by injury to the biliary tree or retained stones, requiring repeat surgical intervention. This study presents the experience of using endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in the management of hepatobiliary surgery complications at the academic referral center of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTHC) Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Methods All patients with postcholecystectomy complications referred to the endoscopy unit at OAUTHC from March 2018 to April 2023 were enrolled. Preoperative imaging included a combination of abdominal ultrasound, CT, MRI, magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP), and T-tube cholangiogram. All ERCP procedures were performed under general anesthesia. Results Seventy-two ERCP procedures were performed on 45 patients referred for postcholecystectomy complications. The most common mode of presentation was ascending cholangitis [16 (35.6%)], followed by persistent biliary fistula [12 (26.7%)]. The overall median duration of symptoms after cholecystectomy was 20 weeks, with a range of 1-162 weeks. The most common postcholecystectomy complication observed was retained stone [16 (35.6%)]. Other postcholecystectomy complications included bile leakage, bile stricture, bile leakage with stricture, and persistent bile leakage from the T-tube in 12 (26.7%), 11 (24.4%), 4 (8.9%), and 2 (4.4%) patients, respectively. Ampullary cannulation during ERCP was successful in all patients (45, 100%). Patients with complete biliary stricture (10/12) required hepaticojejunostomy. Conclusion Endoscopic management of postcholecystectomy complications was found to be safe and reduce the number of needless surgeries to which such patients are exposed. We recommended prompt referral of such patients for ERCP.

Abstract Background Quarantine and isolation (Q&I) are interrelated but not mutually exclusive public health practices for disease control, which may face public resistance in the context of health emergencies due to associated challenges. Hence, it is often tough for most countries to implement Q&I even in the context of health emergencies. Therefore, this scoping review examines the challenges associated with the implementation of institutional Q&I strategies during major multicountry viral outbreaks (Ebola, Lassa and COVID-19) in Africa between 2000 and 2023. Methods This scoping review was designed based on Arksey and O’Malley’s guidelines. A systematic literature search, using nine online research databases, was conducted with the aid of relevant search terms, Boolean operators and truncations. All articles obtained from the literature search were electronically imported into Rayyan web application for deduplication based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. From the included literature, relevant data were charted, summarized, collated, and presented. Results This review included 24 of the 787 retrieved articles. Sixteen of the 24 selected articles investigated issues related to COVID-19 prevention and control in Africa. Two assessed precautionary practices for Lassa fever, while five were on Ebola virus disease. However, one article explored knowledge, preventive practices, and general isolation precautions. The review identified various challenges that hindered the implementation of successful Q&I practices during viral infection outbreaks in Africa. Essential healthcare infrastructure, equipment (medical supplies including personal protective equipment and testing kits) and facilities that are essential for Q&I were deficient. Q&I implementation was often threatened by low human resource capacity and inefficiencies in the healthcare system which portray Africa as unprepared to handle complex public health crises. Conclusions This review shows that Q&I implementation in Africa is often threatened by low human resource capacity and inefficiencies in the healthcare system and also portrays Africa as unprepared to handle complex public health crises. Hence, Q&I for major multicountry outbreaks in Africa is very challenging. Therefore, continuous efforts to address these identified challenges are crucial to enhancing health emergency preparedness in Africa.

The present time in Nigeria and globally has been more perilous than ever, characterized with bizarre occurrences within the church and the larger society. This study explores the Pauline eschatological prediction of the perilous times when men will become lovers of self, lovers of money, and lovers of pleasure more than God (II Timothy 3:1, 2 & 5). Experiential and theological methodologies were adopted for generating qualitative primary and secondary data. The theological aspect of the research employed the tools of biblical exegesis, textual analysis, and literatures. The experiential aspect involved in-depth interviews (IDIs), observations, social media contents and Focused Group Discussions (FGDs) to access current events and personalized experiences of respondents who were purposively selected from within and outside the church. The results were discussed in the light of Christian theology, social ethics and Pastoral ministry. The Nigerian society is evidently witnessing the perilous times when love of self, money and pleasure will become the untoward defining features of human society and sadly too, of men that profess the faith. Transactional gospel, gimmickry, merchandize of holy things, and self-indulgent love of money are rife in the contemporary church. Ostentatious lifestyles, lack of support for the minister at the local church, and false messages on material blessings are what trap church ministers and laypersons in this end-time evil. The context and practice of ‘full time’ ministry when the local assembly is not able to support its minister is a challenge that predisposes some to ‘Simoniacal’ presentations, offering the gifts of God for monetary gain. Sound biblical teachings to protect the people of God and expose the mercenary spirit in sacred function is the local church most potent weaponry.

Abstract Background Headache disorders, including migraine, pose a significant burden globally, with varying prevalence rates across different regions. However, research on migraine in Nigeria and other low-income countries is limited. Understanding the prevalence, characteristics, and treatment outcomes of migraine in Nigeria is essential for informing healthcare policies and improving patient care. Methods This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize existing literature on migraine prevalence, characteristics, and treatment outcomes in Nigeria. Eligible studies were identified through comprehensive searches of multiple electronic databases and grey literature sources. Studies reporting migraine prevalence, diagnostic criteria, treatment modalities, and outcomes were included. Data extraction and quality assessment were performed following established guidelines. Results Ten studies involving 7,768 participants met the inclusion criteria and were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of migraine headache in Nigeria was calculated to be 16% (95% CI = 7–28), with significant heterogeneity observed among studies (I² = 99.35%, P

Abstract Background Adaptive designs (ADs) are intended to make clinical trials more flexible, offering efficiency and potentially cost-saving benefits. Despite a large number of statistical methods in the literature on different adaptations to trials, the characteristics, advantages and limitations of such designs remain unfamiliar to large parts of the clinical and research community. This systematic review provides an overview of the use of ADs in published clinical trials (Part I). A follow-up (Part II) will compare the application of AD in trials in adult and pediatric studies, to provide real-world examples and recommendations for the child health community. Methods Published studies from 2010 to April 2020 were searched in the following databases: MEDLINE (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), and International Pharmaceutical Abstracts (Ovid). Clinical trial protocols, reports, and a secondary analyses using AD were included. We excluded trial registrations and interventions other than drugs or vaccines to align with regulatory guidance. Data from the published literature on study characteristics, types of adaptations, statistical analysis, stopping boundaries, logistical challenges, operational considerations and ethical considerations were extracted and summarized herein. Results Out of 23,886 retrieved studies, 317 publications of adaptive trials, 267 (84.2%) trial reports, and 50 (15.8%) study protocols), were included. The most frequent disease was oncology (168/317, 53%). Most trials included only adult participants (265, 83.9%),16 trials (5.4%) were limited to only children and 28 (8.9%) were for both children and adults, 8 trials did not report the ages of the included populations. Some studies reported using more than one adaptation (there were 390 reported adaptations in 317 clinical trial reports). Most trials were early in drug development (phase I, II (276/317, 87%). Dose-finding designs were used in the highest proportion of the included trials (121/317, 38.2 %). Adaptive randomization (53/317, 16.7%), with drop-the-losers (or pick-the-winner) designs specifically reported in 29 trials (9.1%) and seamless phase 2-3 design was reported in 27 trials (8.5%). Continual reassessment methods (60/317, 18.9%) and group sequential design (47/317, 14.8%) were also reported. Approximately two-thirds of trials used frequentist statistical methods (203/309, 64%), while Bayesian methods were reported in 24% (75/309) of included trials. Conclusion This review provides a comprehensive report of methodological features in adaptive clinical trials reported between 2010 and 2020. Adaptation details were not uniformly reported, creating limitations in interpretation and generalizability. Nevertheless, implementation of existing reporting guidelines on ADs and the development of novel educational strategies that address the scientific, operational challenges and ethical considerations can help in the clinical trial community to decide on when and how to implement ADs in clinical trials. Abstract Introduction The prefrontal cortex (PFC), crucial for cognition and memory, occupies a third of the cerebral cortex. This study investigated the protective effects of aqueous extract of Colocasia esculenta leaf (AECEL) against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced PFC damage in mice. Methods 42 male Swiss albino mice (18–22 g) were divided into six groups. Group A: healthy controls. Groups B-F received daily intraperitoneal LPS injections (0.5 mg/kg) for seven days. Group B: received distilled water, (2 ml) subsequently. Groups C-E: AECEL at 400, 600, and 800 mg/kg, respectively. Group F: donepezil (DPZ, 2.5 mg/kg) by oral gavage. Introduction: While some patients recovered, others died across the world thereby losing their loved ones. The objective of the current study is to determine statistical differences in means of the COVID-19 infected population (laboratory confirmed), discharged cases(recovered) and deaths resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic in Rivers State, Nigeria. Material and Methods: In this study, extraction of the infected population (laboratory confirmed), discharged cases, and deaths from COVID-19 was carried out from data obtained from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control which covered 572 days (25th March 2020 - 17th October 2021). The test for the significance of means among the variables was done using a one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) followed by the Tukey HSD test. The two variables whose means do not significantly differ were tested for strength of relationship and dependence using correlation analysis and cubic polynomial function respectively. Results: Results showed that there is a statistically significant difference between the infected population, discharged cases, and deaths from COVID-19 as obtained from one-way ANOVA (F(2, 1710) = 121.958, p = 0.000). Abstract Background and objective The association of clinical factors of osteoarthritis (OA) with bone mineral density (BMD) is not well understood. We aimed to synthesize evidence regarding the associated clinical factors for low BMD in people with knee and/or hip osteoarthritis. Methods A systematic literature search limited to human studies was conducted from inception to September 12, 2022. CINAHL, Cochrane, Medline, PsycINFO, PubMed, Web of Science, and African Journal online databases were searched for all clinical factors associated with low BMD (either as osteopenia or osteoporosis). Gray literature or abstracts or protocols, studies with a mixed population of OA without a subgroup analysis for hip and or KOA and non-English were excluded. Following the title and abstract, full-text, screenings, and data extraction, data from eligible studies were synthesized based on the main objective of the study. The Joanna Brigg’s Institute (JBI) Critical Assessment tool was used for quality appraisal. Narrative synthesis and best evidence synthesis were used in the study. Result Five studies (2 case–control, 3 cross-sectional) were included after screening 3355 titles and abstracts. Clinical factors reported in the five studies included: body mass index (BMI); pain, function, and stiffness; symptom duration; presence of varus/valgus deformity; quality of life; and knee function. Context: The mucociliary clearance system is an important component in the prevention of chronic inflammation of the nasal and paranasal sinus. Aim: The study aims to establish the normal values of mucociliary clearance in our region and to study the variation in mucociliary activity in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis in Ilorin, North-central Nigeria. Settings and Design: This was a prospective, cross-sectional study using consecutive consenting participants in both the control and study groups carried out at both family medicine and otorhinolaryngology clinics among patients attending the clinics. Subjects and Methods: After ethical approval was sought, informed consent was obtained from patients, a modified version of the validated health questionnaire was filled, semi-structured questionnaires were also filled after which patient undergo anterior rhinoscopy, nasal patency test and spirometry was done. The saccharine test has been used to measure nasal-mucociliary clearance time in the past. Statistical Analysis: All information were entered into SPSS version 20 and analysed descriptively, and results were presented in tables and figures. Results: Consecutive consenting 125 patients with rhinosinusitis (study group) and those without rhinosinusitis (control group) underwent naso-mucociliary clearance test. There were 34 males and 91 females with a male:female ratio of 1:2.6 among the study group and 55 males and 70 females with a male:female ratio of 1:1.3 for the control group. The age range was from 18 to 68 years with 18–40 years constituting the modal age group. The mean age for the studied group was 35.7 years while that of the control group was 33.1 years. The mean naso-mucociliary clearance time among the study group was 35.1 min standard deviation (SD = 12.32 ± 1.63), while among the control group, it was 14.8 min (SD = 5.59 ± 0.43). Conclusion: Compared to the control group, there was a roughly 200% prolonged increase in the duration of naso-mucociliary clearance time among patients with rhinosinusitis. There was also a positive correlation with increasing age. Future studies comparing the pre-operative and post-operative treatment of rhinosinusitis will contribute to knowledge.

Abstract Background This study aims to compare the topical administration of bupivacaine hydrochloride and lidocaine hydrochloride with epinephrine in alleviating post-tonsillectomy pain. Post-tonsillectomy pain has remained a challenge to both patient and doctors, and local anaesthetic agents applied to the tonsillar fossae post-operatively look promising. Methods One hundred and twenty ASA I or II children aged 2–15 years of consenting parents undergoing adenoidectomy and/or tonsillectomy were enrolled in the study. This was a randomized double-blind study in which the children were allocated into either of two groups to receive 5 ml of 0.125% bupivacaine or equal volume of lidocaine plus 1:200,000 adrenaline-soaked swab applied directly on the tonsillar floor within the fossae and/or nasopharynx after haemostasis was secured for 5 min before discontinuation of anaesthesia. Results Patients in the bupivacaine group had better extubating condition (p = 0.0001). There was no difference in the time to eye opening in both groups (p-value 0.316). Patients in the lidocaine group had a time to first analgesic request between 1 and 6 h, whereas in the bupivacaine group, about 25 patients (44% of the group) had a time to first analgesic request that exceeded 6 h (6–10 h). The only complication recorded in both groups following oral feeds was vomiting, and there was no difference in both groups (p = 0.968). Overall parental satisfaction was better with bupivacaine group (p = 0.00001). Conclusion Topical application of bupivacaine was associated with better extubation conditions and parental satisfaction when compared to topical lidocaine plus adrenaline while both demonstrated similar time to eye opening, analgesic request, haemodynamic parameters and incidence of complications.

Abstract Background Improving the quality of midwifery education to international standards is critical to prepare competent midwives. Despite the recognised impact of competent midwives, little is known concerning the implementation of Competency-Based Education (CBE), especially in Africa, where poor investment in quality midwifery education has been reported. Objective The aim of this study is to scope and synthesize the existing literature on the implementation of CBE for midwifery programmes and its sustainability in Africa. Methods The scoping review methodology outlined by Arksey and O’Malley framework was adopted to explore the extent of the literature on the implementation of CBE for midwifery programmes and its sustainability in Africa. This framework directed the scoping review methodology, with reference to PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Results A total sample of 72 studies were finally included in this scoping review. Reporting of the scoping review findings follows the PRISMA- ScR format. The study showed that of the 54 African countries as per the World Bank classification, after review of the full articles following the eligibility criteria for inclusion, literature on midwifery education programmes only spanned 17 African countries as at the time of this report. Of which, 11 are implementing CBE, 5 are still using Traditionally Based Approaches (TBA) while Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is the main teaching pedagogy used in Botswana. This review revealed that for the successful implementation of CBE, a CBE curriculum implementation process must be strictly observed. Evidence from the literature confirmed that CBE has not been sustained in Africa. There is still a struggle to fully integrate the major components of the competency-based midwifery programme due to inadequate support and an inadequate monitoring system. Conclusions It is expedient that CBE implementation should be planned concurrently with its sustainability for it to be effective. Adequate training and support should be continuously provided to faculties, institutions, policy makers, professional bodies, students and other stakeholders for successful implementation and sustainability. Resource-rich economies, especially those in Africa, are plagued with the resource curse and Dutch Disease syndromes, which undermine the quest for effectively mobilizing domestic resources toward sustainable and inclusive development. Empirical evidence on the role illicit financial flow (IFF) plays in this regard is relatively scarce. Thus, this study evaluates the volume of IFF and its effect on tax revenue in seven resource-rich African countries. Panel data, sourced for the 2009-2021 period, were analysed using the fixed effect and random effect models while the Instrumental Variable Generalised Method of Moment (IV-GMM), a dynamic estimator, was used for robustness check. Findings revealed that IFF has been on the rise and has detrimental effects on the tax revenue of the sampled countries’ national governments. This is inimical to sustainable development. Thus, the governments and policymakers in these countries must develop pragmatic policy and institutional approaches toward tackling the IFF menace.

BackgroundAnkle instability results in sensory and motor impairments. Typically, health professionals recommend conservative treatment as the initial approach for individuals with this condition. One such treatment option is Electrical Stimulation (ES). This systematic review assesses the effects of ES techniques on postural control measures in cases of ankle instability.MethodWe systematically searched five electronic databases: ClinicalTrials.gov, PubMed, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science. To evaluate the quality of the included articles, we utilized the PEDro checklist. We extracted data on population, intervention, and outcomes and synthesized them narratively.ResultES decreased the time needed to stabilize the center of pressure, velocity, displacement, and area, thereby enhancing the performance of clinical tests. While postural stability indexes remained unaffected, the gait inversion angle increased with electrical stimulation.ConclusionThese results suggest that ES interventions are crucial in enhancing postural control in subjects with ankle instability compared to coordination exercises therapy alone. Stochastic resonance reduced A/P and M/L TTS, COP velocity, COP displacement, and COP area, resulting in enhanced postural control.

Purpose: Researchers have opined that the quality of commitment to pedagogical approaches by lecturers is one of the most important factors in determining student academic success. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the mediating effect of research informed teaching on the relationship between lecturer commitment to use of pedagogical approaches and teaching quality, with a view towards enabling delivery of high quality teaching and learning in HEIs. Design/methodology/approach: The research is based on an online survey of the perception of 186 undergraduate and postgraduate students in four major UK universities. Covariance-based structural equation modelling (SEM) methodology was used to quantity and clarify the influence of lecturers' pedagogical attributes on teaching quality, mediated by research-informed teaching. Findings: Findings reveal that--lecturers' pedagogical attributes have significant positive effect on teaching quality, research-informed teaching have significant positive effect on teaching quality, lecturers' pedagogical attributes have weak positive effect on research-informed teaching, and research-informed teaching partially mediates (indirect effect) the relationship between lecturers' pedagogical attributes and teaching quality. Practical implications: Structural equation models are useful for clarifying concepts in pedagogy and have implications for education managers on how to improve teaching and learning in HEIs. Originality/value: The paper presents a unique quantitative model for measuring the degree of teaching quality in universities.

Against the backdrop of the warnings by some previous studies about the danger of the Yorùbá language losing domains because of the increasing dominance of English, the present study examines the broadcast languages of selected radio stations in Osun State, Nigeria, to ascertain the extent of the threat of English to Yorùbá in broadcast media domain. The investigation is carried out within the wider context of the worries being expressed by many speakers of Yorùbá about the status of the language with respect to language endangerment. It employs both quantitative and qualitative research designs rooted in content analysis, and examines 426 purposively sampled programmes of Rave FM and Gold FM. The programmes were sorted and content-analysed using charts. Of the 12 examined programme categories, English is the dominant language of 9 most important programmes, while Yorùbá is the dominant language of 3 programmes; thereby pointing to a gradual loss of the radio broadcast domain. The study recommends more value-added usage of the Yorùbá language in media domains to improve the language's vitality and inclusive audience participation.

Despite growing recognition of the need for increased diversity among students, trainees, and faculty in health care, the medical workforce still lacks adequate representation from groups historically underrepresented in medicine (URiM). The subspecialty field of pediatric pulmonology is no exception. Although there have been efforts to address issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in our own field, gaps persist. To address these gaps, the members of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Advisory Group (DEI-AG) of the American Thoracic Society Pediatrics Assembly created and distributed a Needs Assessment Survey in the United States and Canada to better understand the racial and ethnic demographics of the pediatric pulmonary workforce and to learn more about successes, gaps, and opportunities to enhance how we recruit, train, and retain a diverse workforce. The DEI-AG leadership cochairs convened a workshop to review the findings of the DEI Needs Assessment Survey and to develop strategies to improve the recruitment and retention of URiM fellows and faculty. This Official ATS Workshop Report aims to identify barriers and opportunities for recruitment, training, and career development within the field of pediatric pulmonology. Additionally, we offer useful strategies and resources to improve the recruitment of URiM residents, the mentorship of trainees and junior faculty, and the career development of URiM faculty in academic centers. This Workshop Report is an important first deliverable by the DEI-AG. We hope that this work, originating from within the Pediatrics Assembly, will serve as a model for other Assemblies, disciplines across the ATS, and other fields in Pediatrics.
