Abstract: In the high luminosity era of the Large Hadron Collider, the HL-LHC, the instantaneous luminosity is expected to reach unprecedented values, resulting in about 200 proton-proton interactions in a typical bunch crossing. To cope with the resultant increase in occupancy, bandwidth and radiation damage, the ATLAS Inner Detector will be replaced by an all-silicon system, the Inner Tracker (ITk). The ITk consists of a silicon pixel and a strip detector and exploits the concept of modularity. Prototyping and testing of various strip detector components has been carried out. This paper presents the developments and results obtained with reduced-size structures equivalent to those foreseen to be used in the forward region of the silicon strip detector. Referred to as petalets, these structures are built around a composite sandwich with embedded cooling pipes and electrical tapes for routing the signals and power. Detector modules built using electronic flex boards and silicon strip sensors are glued on both the front and back side surfaces of the carbon structure. Details are given on the assembly, testing and evaluation of several petalets. Measurement results of both mechanical and electrical quantities are shown. Abstract: We report on a search for pair production of first-generation scalar leptoquarks ($LQ$) in $p \bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=1.96 TeV using an integrated luminosity of 203 $pb^{-1}$ collected at the Fermilab Tevatron collider by the CDF experiment. We observe no evidence for $LQ$ production in the topologies arising from $LQ \bar{LQ} \to eqeq$ and $LQ \bar{LQ} \to eq \nu q$, and derive 95% C.L. upper limits on the $LQ$ production cross section. %as a function of $\beta$, where $\beta$ is the branching fraction for $LQ \to eq$. The results are combined with those obtained from a separately reported CDF search in the topology arising from $LQ\bar{LQ} \to \nu q \nu q$ and 95% C.L. lower limits on the LQ mass as a function of $\beta = BR(LQ \to eq) $ are derived. The limits are 236, 205 and 145 GeV/c$^2$ for $\beta$ = 1, $\beta$ = 0.5 and $\beta$ = 0.1, respectively., Comment: submitted to PRL

Abstract: The properties of three-jet events with total transverse energy greater than 320 GeV and individual jet energy greater than 20 GeV have been analyzed and compared to absolute predictions from a next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD calculation. These data, of integrated luminosity 86 pb^-1, were recorded by the CDF Experiment for proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV. This study tests a model of higher order QCD processes that result in gluon emission and can be used to estimate the magnitude of the contribution of processes higher than NLO. The total cross section is measured to be 466 +/- 3(stat.)^{+207}_{-70}(syst.) pb. The differential cross section is furthermore measured for all kinematically accessible regions of the Dalitz plane, including those for which the theoretical prediction is unreliable. While the measured cross section is consistent with the theoretical prediction in magnitude, the two differ somewhat in shape in the Dalitz plane.

Abstract: We report the observation of a narrow state decaying into $J/\psi\pi^+\pi^-$ and produced in $220 pb^{-1}$ of $\bar{p} p $ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV$ in the CDF II experiment. We observe $ 730 \pm 90 $ decays. The mass is measured to be $3871.3 \pm 0.7 (stat) \pm 0.4 (syst) MeV/c2$, with an observed width consistent with the detector resolution. 5. Diffractive Dijet Production at sqrt(s)=630 and 1800 GeV at the Fermilab Tevatron

Abstract: We report a measurement of the diffractive structure function $F_{jj}^D$ of the antiproton obtained from a study of dijet events produced in association with a leading antiproton in $\bar pp$ collisions at $\sqrt s=630$ GeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. The ratio of $F_{jj}^D$ at $\sqrt s=630$ GeV to $F_{jj}^D$ obtained from a similar measurement at $\sqrt s=1800$ GeV is compared with expectations from QCD factorization and with theoretical predictions. We also report a measurement of the $\xi$ ($x$-Pomeron) and $\beta$ ($x$ of parton in Pomeron) dependence of $F_{jj}^D$ at $\sqrt s=1800$ GeV. In the region $0.035<\xi<0.095$, $|t|<1$ GeV$^2$ and $\beta<0.5$, $F_{jj}^D(\beta,\xi)$ is found to be of the form $\beta^{-1.0\pm 0.1} \xi^{-0.9\pm 0.1}$, which obeys $\beta$-$\xi$ factorization., Comment: LaTeX, 9 pages, Submitted to Phys. 6. Measurement of the Strong Coupling Constant from Inclusive Jet Production at the Tevatron $\bar pp$ Collider

Abstract: We report a measurement of the strong coupling constant, $\alpha_s(M_Z)$, extracted from inclusive jet production in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$1800 GeV. The QCD prediction for the evolution of $\alpha_s$ with jet transverse energy $E_T$ is tested over the range 40<$E_T$<450 GeV using $E_T$ for the renormalization scale. The data show good agreement with QCD in the region below 250 GeV. In the text we discuss the data-theory comparison in the region from 250 to 450 GeV. The value of $\alpha_s$ at the mass of the $Z^0$ boson averaged over the range 40<$E_T$<250 GeV is found to be $\alpha_s(M_{Z})= 0.1178 \pm 0.0001{(\rm stat)}^{+0.0081}_{-0.0095}{\rm (exp. syst)}$. 8. Observation of Diffractive $J/\psi$ Production at the Fermilab Tevatron

Abstract: We report the first observation of diffractive $J/\psi(\to \mu^+\mu^-)$ production in $\bar pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=1.8 TeV. Diffractive events are identified by their rapidity gap signature. In a sample of events with two muons of transverse momentum $p_T^{\mu}>2$ GeV/$c$ within the pseudorapidity region $|\eta|<$1.0, the ratio of diffractive to total $J/\psi$ production rates is found to be $R_{J/\psi}= [1.45\pm 0.25]%$. The ratio $R_{J/\psi}(x)$ is presented as a function of $x$-Bjorken. Abstract: We present searches for quark-lepton compositeness and a heavy W' boson at high electron-neutrino transverse mass. We use ~110/pb of data collected in p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV by the CDF collaboration during 1992--95. The data are consistent with standard model expectations. Limits are set on the quark-lepton compositeness scale Lambda and the ratio of partial cross sections sigma (W' -> e nu) / sigma (W -> e nu). The cross section ratio is used to obtain a lower limit on the mass of a W' boson with standard model couplings. We exclude Lambda < 2.81 TeV and a W' boson with mass below 754 GeV/c^2 at the 95% confidence level. 11. Cross Section and Heavy Quark Composition of Photon+Muon Events Produced in ppbar Collisions

Abstract: We present a measurement of the cross section and the first measurement of the heavy flavor content of associated direct photon + muon events produced in hadronic collisions. These measurements come from a sample of 1.8 TeV ppbar collisions recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) predicts that these events are primarily due to Compton scattering process charm+gluon -> charm+photon, with the final state charm quark producing a muon. The cross section for events with a photon transverse momentum between 12 and 40 GeV/c is measured to be 46.8+-6.3+-7.5 pb, which is two standard deviations below the most recent theoretical prediction. A significant fraction of the events in the sample contain a final-state bottom quark. 12. Search for Narrow Diphoton Resonances and for gamma-gamma+W/Z Signatures in p\bar p Collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV

Abstract: We present results of searches for diphoton resonances produced both inclusively and also in association with a vector boson (W or Z) using 100 pb^{-1} of p\bar p collisions using the CDF detector. We set upper limits on the product of cross section times branching ratio for both p\bar p\to\gamma\gamma + X and p\bar p\to\gamma\gamma + W/Z. Comparing the inclusive production to the expectations from heavy sgoldstinos we derive limits on the supersymmetry-breaking scale sqrt{F} in the TeV range, depending on the sgoldstino mass and the choice of other parameters. Also, using a NLO prediction for the associated production of a Higgs boson with a W or Z boson, we set an upper limit on the branching ratio for H\to\gamma\gamma. Finally, we set a lower limit on the mass of a `bosophilic' Higgs boson (e.g. one which couples only to \gamma, W, and Z$ bosons with standard model couplings) of 82 GeV/c^2 at 95% confidence level., Comment: 30 pages, 11 figures

14. Measurement of the W Boson Mass with the Collider Detector at Fermilab

Abstract: We present a measurement of the W boson mass using data collected with the CDF detector during the 1994-95 collider run at the Fermilab Tevatron. A fit to the transverse mass spectrum of a sample of 30,115 W -> enu events recorded in an integrated luminosity of 84 pb^(-1) gives a mass Mw = 80.473 +- 0.065(stat.) +- 0.092(syst.) GeV/c^2. A fit to the transverse mass spectrum of a sample of 14,740 W -> munu events from 80 pb^(-1) gives a mass Mw = 80.465 +- 0.100(stat.) +- 0.103(syst.) GeV/c^2. The dominant contributions to the systematic uncertainties are the uncertainties in the electron energy scale and the muon momentum scale, 0.075 GeV/c^2 and 0.085 GeV/c^2, respectively. The combined value for the electron and muon channel is Mw = 80.470 +- 0.089 GeV/c^2. We present measurements of the fragmentation fractions, f_u, f_d, f_s and f_baryon, of produced b quarks that yield B^+, B^0, B^0_s and Lambda_b hadrons. Reconstruction of several electron-charm final states yields f_s/(f_u+f_d)=0.213+/-0.068 and f_baryon/(f_u+f_d)=0.118+/-0.042, assuming f_u=f_d. If all B hadrons produced in p-pbar collisions cascade to one of these four hadrons, we determine f_u=f_d=0.375+/-0.023, f_s=0.160+/-0.044 and f_baryon=0.090+/-0.029. The charge of the lepton in the final state identifies the flavor of the anti-B0 meson at its decay. The second lepton in the event is used to infer the flavor of the anti-B0 meson at production. Abstract: We present a measurement of relative partial widths and decay rate CP asymmetries in K−K+ and π−π+ decays of D0 mesons produced in pp¯ collisions at s√=1.96 TeV. We use a sample of 2×105 D*+→D0π+ (and charge conjugate) decays with the D0 decaying to K−π+, K−K+, and π−π+, corresponding to 123 pb−1 of data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab II experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. No significant direct CP violation is observed. We measure Γ(D0→K−K+)/Γ(D0→K−π+)=0.0992±0.0011±0.0012, Γ(D0→π−π+)/Γ(D0→K−π+)=0.035 94±0.000 54±0.000 40, ACP(K−K+)=(2.0±1.2±0.6)%, and ACP(π−π+)=(1.0±1.3±0.6)%, where, in all cases, the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Abstract: We present a search for long-lived doubly charged Higgs bosons (H±±), with signatures of high ionization energy loss and muonlike penetration. We use 292 pb−1 of data collected in pp¯ collisions at √s=1.96 TeV by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. Observing no evidence of long-lived doubly charged particle production, we exclude H±±L and H±±R bosons with masses below 133 GeV/c2 and 109 GeV/c2, respectively. In the degenerate case we exclude H±± mass below 146 GeV/c2. All limits are quoted at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract: We measure the branching fraction of the top quark to longitudinally and right-handed polarized $W$ bosons, $F_0$ and $F_+$, using approximately 200 pb$^{-1}$ of $\bar{p}p$ collisions collected by the CDF II detector. We analyze two quantities sensitive to the $W$ helicity: the invariant mass of the charged lepton and the bottom-quark jet in the decay $t\to Wb \to \ell��b$ (where $\ell=e$ or $��$), and the transverse momentum of the charged lepton. We find $F_0=0.74^{+0.22}_{-0.34}$, and $F_+, 7 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters

Abstract: This article presents a measurement of the top quark mass using the CDF II detector at Fermilab. Colliding beams of protons and anti-protons at Fermilab's Tevatron (sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV) produce top/anti-top pairs, which decay to W^+W^-bbbar; events are selected where one W decays to hadrons, and one W decays to either e or mu plus a neutrino. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of approximately 318 pb^-1. A total of 165 ttbar events are separated into four subsamples based on jet transverse energy thresholds and the number of b jets identified by reconstructing a displaced vertex. In each event, the reconstructed top quark invariant mass is determined by minimizing a chi-squared for the overconstrained kinematic system. At the same time, the mass of the hadronically decaying W boson is measured in the same event sample. The observed W boson mass provides an in situ improvement in the determination of the hadronic jet energy scale, JES. A simultaneous likelihood fit of the reconstructed top quark masses and the W boson invariant masses in the data sample to distributions from simulated signal and background events gives a top quark mass of 173.5 +3.7/-3.6 (stat.+JES) +/- 1.3 (other syst.) Abstract: The first measurement of the true top quark PT distributon was carried out. An attempt was also made to compute a 95% confidence level upper limit on the fraction of top quarks that are produced with 225 > PT > 425 GeV/c. It was found that R4 > 0.16 at 95% C.L.

Abstract: We report two measurements of the top-quark mass M(top) using the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron in a 318 pb(-1) data sample of tt events in the lepton+jets final state. One method uses an event-based likelihood technique resulting in M(top) = 173.2(-2.4)(+2.6)(stat) +/- 3.2(syst) GeV/c2 or 173.2(-4.0)(+4.1) GeV/c2. The second method reconstructs a top-quark mass in each event using the measured invariant mass of the hadronically decaying W boson to constrain the jet energy scale to obtain a value for M(top)of 173.5(-3.6)(+3.7)(stat) +/- 1.3(syst) GeV/c2 or 173.5(-3.8)(+3.9) GeV/c2 . We take the latter, which is more precise, as our result.

Abstract: We report on measurements of differential cross sections dsigma/dp(T) for prompt charm meson production in ppmacr; collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV using 5.8+/-0.3 pb(-1) of data from the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The data are collected with a new trigger that is sensitive to the long lifetime of hadrons containing heavy flavor. The charm meson cross sections are measured in the central rapidity region |y|K-pi(+), D(*+)-->D0pi(+), D+-->K-pi(+)pi(+), D(+)(s)-->phipi(+), and their charge conjugates. The measured cross sections are compared to theoretical calculations.

Abstract: The decay mechanisms of Bs0 → μ +μ- and Bd0 → μ +μ- in pp̄ collisions were investigated. For discrimination of the decays from background events, four variables were used such as invariant mass of muon pair, B-candidate proper decay length, opening angle between B-hadron flight direction and B-candidate track isolation. A 'blind' analysis technique was also used for determination of optimal selection criteria for four variables. The results show that optimal set of selection criteria uses ∓80 MeV/c2 search window around B s0 mass, and I > 0.65.

Abstract: We report a measurement of the tt production cross section using dilepton events with jets and missing transverse energy in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. Using a 197+/-12 pb(-1) data sample recorded by the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab, we use two complementary techniques to select candidate events. We compare the number of observed events and selected kinematical distributions with the predictions of the standard model and find good agreement. The combined result of the two techniques yields a tt production cross section of 7.0(+2.4)(-2.1)(stat)+1.6-1.1(syst)+/-0.4(lum) pb.

Abstract: We have studied the production of B hadrons in 1.8-TeV pp[over ¯] collisions. We present measurements of the fragmentation fractions, f_{u}, f_{d}, f_{s}, and f_{baryon}, of produced b quarks that yield B^{+}, B^{0}, B_{s}^{0}, and Λ[over ¯]_{b}^{0} hadrons. Reconstruction of five electron-charm final states yields f_{s}/( f_{u}+f_{d})=0.213±0.068 and f_{baryon}/( f_{u}+f_{d})=0.118±0.042, assuming f_{u}=f_{d}. If all B hadrons produced in pp[over ¯] collisions cascade to one of these four hadrons, we determine f_{u}=f_{d}=0.375±0.023, f_{s}=0.160±0.044, and f_{baryon}=0.090±0.029. If we do not assume f_{u}=f_{d}, we find f_{d}/f_{u}=0.84±0.16.

Abstract: Results on a search for pair production of second-generation scalar leptoquark in pp̄ collisions at s=1.96TeV are reported. The data analyzed were collected by the CDF detector during the 2002-2003 Tevatron Run II and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 198pb-1. Leptoquarks (LQ) are sought through their decay into (charged) leptons and quarks, with final state signatures represented by two muons and jets and one muon, large transverse missing energy and jets. We observe no evidence for LQ production and derive 95% C.L. upper limits on the LQ production cross sections as well as lower limits on their mass as a function of β, where β is the branching fraction for LQ→μq. © 2006 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: We report a measurement of the diffractive structure function F(D)(jj) of the antiproton obtained from a study of dijet events produced in association with a leading antiproton in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 630 GeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. The ratio of F(D)(jj) at sqrt[s] = 630 GeV to F(D)(jj) obtained from a similar measurement at sqrt[s] = 1800 GeV is compared with expectations from QCD factorization and other theoretical predictions. We also report a measurement of the xi ( x-Pomeron) and beta ( x of parton in Pomeron) dependence of F(D)(jj) at sqrt[s] = 1800 GeV. In the region 0.035
