Coastal communities commonly rely upon foredunes as the first line of defense against sea-level rise and storms, thus requiring management guidance to optimize their protective services. Here, we use the AeoLiS model to simulate wind-driven accretion and wave-driven erosion patterns on foredunes with different morphologies and ecological properties under modern-day conditions. Additional sets of model runs mimic potential future climate changes to inform how both morphological and ecological properties may have differing contributions to net dune changes under evolving environmental forcing. This exploratory study, applied to represent the morphological, environmental, and ecological conditions of the northern Outer Banks, North Carolina, USA, finds that dunes experiencing minimal wave collision have similar net volumetric growth rates regardless of beach morphology, though the location and density of vegetation influence sediment deposition patterns across the dune profile. The model indicates that high-density, uniform planting strategies trap sediment close to the dune toe, whereas low-density plantings may allow for accretion across a broader extent of the dune face. The initial beach and dune shape generally plays a larger role in annual-scale dune evolution than vegetation cover. For steeper beach slopes and/or low dune toe elevations, the model generally predicts wave-driven dune erosion at the annual scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The analyses of 184 sediment targets and more than 70,000 individual grains revealed that along the Opportunity rover traverse there are four distinct fractions of deposits related to different geomorphological settings: (a) dust mixed with very fine sand is common behind topographical obstacles, (b) fine sands are deposited in depressions, (c) very coarse sands occur in coarse‐grained ripple fields, and (d) gravel dominates at the rims of craters and on bedrock as lag deposits. Medium size sands were not observed on the plains, but they can be trapped in relatively large craters, where they form dunes and are within coarse‐grained ripples and transverse aeolian ridges (TARs). The fine sands show no regional variations in chemical composition and granulometry, as these sands are easily transported by wind. The very coarse sands vary in composition and shape between the plains and the Endeavour crater rim as their sources are local and their transport distances are short. On the plains, the gravel and the coarse sands are enriched in iron and characterized by higher roundness than the grains from the Endeavour crater rim. The source of iron‐rich, rounded grains on the plains are hematite spherules that are eroded out of Burns formation rocks. The smallest, the best sorted, and the least rounded coarse sand samples are found on coarse‐grained ripple crests. They are mainly composed of spherule fragments and their low roundness indicates shorter transport path lengths than those of grains transported in the past when coarse‐grained ripples migrated. Grain collisions in aeolian events, e.g., due to saltation, result in atmospheric aerosols. They may regularly be electrically charged, but individual charge balances in collisions including small grains are not easily obtained on the ground. We therefore approach this problem in terms of microgravity, which allows for the observation of collisions and the determination of small charges. In a drop tower experiment, ∼1 mm dust aggregates are traced before and after a collision within the electric field of a plate capacitor. The sum of the electric charge of two particles (total charge) before and after the collision often strongly deviates from charge conservation. Due to the average low collision velocities of 0.2 m/s, there is no large scale fragmentation. However, we do observe small charged particles emerging from collisions. The smallest of these particles are as small as the current resolution limit of the optical system, i.e., they are at least as small as tens of µm. In the given setting, these small fragments may carry 1 nC/m2–1 µC/m2 which is between 1% and ten times the surface charge density of the large aggregates. These first experiments indicate that collisions of charged aggregates regularly shed charged grains into the atmosphere, likely down to the suspendable aerosol size. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding the dynamics of beach–dune systems is crucial for effective coastal management. The cellular automata model DuBeVeg provides a powerful tool for simulating and understanding the bio-geomorphological evolution of these systems, capturing key interactions of aeolian, hydro-, and vegetation dynamics in a simplified manner. In this study, we present an alternative representation of the aeolian transport component in DuBeVeg, aiming to better capture the saltation transport mode that prevails on beaches. This new representation is compared with the original aeolian transport representation in DuBeVeg, which is inspired by ripple migration. For three beach width scenarios, we considered the effects of the different aeolian transport representations on the predicted foredune morphology after 50 years, as well as the spatio-temporal evolution of the beach–dune system leading to that morphologic state. The saltation transport representation resulted in a more realistic simulation of the seaward expansion of the foredune compared with the original representation, particularly in scenarios with wide and prograding beaches. The new representation also more accurately captured the amplitude of aeolian bedforms emerging across the beach. Recently, significant progress has been made in conceptually describing the dynamic aspects of coarse particle entrainment, which has been explored experimentally for open channel flows. The aim of this study is to extend the application of energy criterion to the low mobility aeolian transport of solids (including both natural sediment and anthropogenic debris such as plastics), ranging from incomplete (rocking) to full (rolling) entrainments. This is achieved by linking particle movements to energetic flow events, which are defined as flow structures with the ability to work on particles, setting them into motion. It is hypothesized that such events should impart sufficient energy to the particles, above a certain threshold value. The concept’s validity is demonstrated experimentally, using a wind tunnel and laser distance sensor to capture the dynamics of an individual target particle, exposed on a rough bed surface. Measurements are acquired at a high spatiotemporal resolution, and synchronously with the instantaneous air velocity at an appropriate distance upwind of the target particle, using a hot film anemometer. This enables the association of flow events with rocking and rolling entrainments. Furthermore, it is shown that rocking and rolling may have distinct energy thresholds. Estimates of the energy transfer efficiency, normalized by the drag coefficient, range over an order of magnitude (from about 0.001 to 0.0048 for rocking, up to about 0.01, for incipient rolling). The proposed event-based theoretical framework is a novel approach to characterizing the energy imparted from the wind to the soil surface and could have potential implications for modelling intermittent creep transport of coarse particles and related aeolian bedforms. An investigation of wind flow and sand transport over a low to high density Ammophila dominated foredune on the Łeba barrier, Poland, utilizing multiple anemometers and sand traps is presented. The study provides the first high resolution data on modified saltation and suspended sand transport over a foredune under conditions of both canopy and skimming flow. Topographic acceleration of flow and topographic steering over the foredune were observed during oblique incident above threshold flow conditions. The concentration of sand in aeolian transport decreases with height to a minimum that is reached at different elevations above the ground, depending on Ammophila grass density. Of the three Ammophila (marram) grass densities investigated, nearly half (46%) of the total sand‐transport rate occurred above the lower density Ammophila grass, whereas up to 70% of the total transport occurred above the higher density marram grass. This likely results from both elastic collisions of sand grains with grass leaves over the Ammophila canopy and the different positions of the canopy rebounding surface, which is sensitive to even slight changes in wind speed. In addition, as plant density increases, there is less flow penetration into the canopy, vegetative forcing (similar to topographic forcing) of vertical flow is greater, and sand in both modified saltation and suspension is forced higher above the canopy in skimming flow. The maximum sand transport above the vegetation canopy increased in elevation from 32 to 48 to 53 cm as the vegetation density increased from low to moderate to high, respectively. The study also demonstrates that in skimming flow, relatively more sand is transported at higher elevations above a canopy surface than above a bare sand surface. Through a field experiment on a sandy beach at Pingtan, China, we propose the first model to characterize the variability of apparent von Kármán parameter κa ${\kappa }_{a}$ in the thermally and sedimentologically stratified air flows. The model shows that κa ${\kappa }_{a}$ is negatively correlated to flux Richardson number as well as sediment transport rate. The atmospheric stability can be either from thermal stratification or sedimentological stratification, neglecting either of them can lead to substantial errors in predicting shear velocity and sediment transport rate. Sediment grain size has a first‐order control on aeolian transport rates due to threshold effects. However, there remain limited in‐situ approaches to measuring properties of sediment size within the saltation layer in field environments. Here, a demonstration of in‐line holography for generating quasi‐3D images of saltating particles near the bed during an aeolian transport event is presented. A vertical fining of sediment grain size in the 50 mm above the bed is found for time‐averaged results. At shorter timescales this fining trend is not unconditionally true as the instantaneous positions of individual saltating particles is dependent on their trajectories. Whereas both the number of particles and sediment concentrations increase with rising wind speeds, the measurements suggest that median grain size coarsened with time despite reducing wind speeds—likely due to winnowing of fine sands from the surface bed layer. Trends found using the holographic sensor are confirmed with traditional measurement techniques, with deviations between these various measurement approaches analyzed and discussed. The data here collectively demonstrate the ability of off‐the‐shelf in‐line holographic technology to provide new insights into detailed particle‐scale aeolian sediment transport dynamics. It has long been hypothesized that the last glacial maximum (LGM) oversaw cold, arid, windy climates across southern Australia, and that these were driven by intensification and northward expansion of mid-latitude westerly circulation. Moreover, it was recently suggested that Australia experienced an extended LGM which began several millennia before the global peak. Aeolian sedimentary deposits provide key evidence for these hypotheses, and climate modelling an alternative means to test them. As yet, however, combined approaches to reconstructing glacial environments on the continent are scarce. Here we provide new evidence for westerly wind regimes across glacial southeastern Australia. We confirm active transverse lunette deposition at c. 29 ka and c. 23–19 ka in the semi-arid Willandra Lakes, and identify aeolian sand incursions to Spring Creek on the temperate Western Victorian Volcanic Plains from c. 29 ka. The Spring Creek deposits contain a surprising quantity of sand-sized quartz given the basalt setting, which we propose to be allochthonous and likely transported some distance. The site lies more than 50 km east and south of dunefields which were active at the same time and may have contributed sediment via long distance transport. We investigate the hypothesis for northward glacial expansion of westerly winds by combining our sediment records with aeolian particle transport simulations. We find that LGM near-surface winds were dominated by stronger, more focussed westerly air flow across southeastern Australia, compared with presently more diffuse wind regimes. Our results suggest stronger potential for LGM eastward distal sand transport onto the basalt plains, coeval with enhanced aeolian activity in the semi-arid Australian dunefields. Our combined reconstruction of aeolian deposition and trajectory modelling confirms the extended LGM hypothesis and indicates a northward migration of westerly winds over southeastern Australia during this period.

Abstract: Understanding the dynamics driving the transformation of snowfall crystals into blowing snow particles is critical to correctly account for the energy and mass balances in polar and alpine regions. Here we propose a fragmentation theory of fractal snow crystals that explicitly links the size distribution of blowing snow particles to that of falling snow crystals. We use discrete element modeling of the fragmentation process to support the assumptions made in our theory. By combining this fragmentation model with a statistical mechanics model of blowing snow, we are able to reproduce the characteristic features of blowing snow size distributions measured in the field and in a wind tunnel. In particular, both model and measurements show the emergence of a self‐similar scaling for large particle sizes and a systematic deviation from this scaling for small particle sizes.

We analyze major landforms of the Lut Desert in Iran to provide a comprehensive source‐to‐sink picture of aeolian systems on time scales from decades to millions of years. We map the modern sandflows, along which we evaluate the volume and chronology associated with the excavation of mega‐yardangs upwind and the formation of giant dunes downwind. Sediment discharges deduced from long‐term erosion and deposition are of the same order of magnitude (105–106 m3 yr−1) as short‐term and medium‐term sand discharges derived from wind data and dune morphodynamics. At the scale of the internal aeolian sediment‐routing system of the Lut, we establish an overall sediment budget constrained by the joint development of the erosional and depositional landforms. Our findings thus quantify the geomorphic controls of aeolian processes on arid landscapes at multiple length and time scales, while providing information on mass exchanges between continents and atmosphere. The Lut Desert in Iran is nested in a closed topographic depression which provides an appropriate context to investigate the work of the wind. Spectacular landforms called mega‐yardangs and giant dunes are used together with modern wind data to map and quantify sandflows at different time scales. These sandflows are consistent with each other from decades to millions of years and allow to estimate the amount of sediments transported across the Lut Desert or emitted into the atmosphere. These estimates are not only important for the management of terrestrial drylands, but they can also provide information about the past evolution of planetary bodies dominated by aeolian processes such as Mars or Titan. A study of geomorphological changes in the continental dune massifs of the Curonian Spit is presented. Analysis of sand dynamics was carried out using satellite images. A relative decrease in the area of open dunes as a result of vegetation of the western slope was revealed. It was determined that the dune belt displacement of the southern part of the Curonian Spit occurs eastward at a speed of 2-5 mper year. Good correlation of the directions of the slopes of large dunes in the villages Morskoe and Rybachy with the direction of the resulting wind vector at the nearest weather station was noted. The relationship between the formation of relief microforms on the surface of the dunes and the resulting wind vector is revealed. In addition, meteorological parameters affecting aeolian processes in the southeast of the Baltic Region were investigated. The prevailing importance for the formation of aeolian relief forms of the Curonian Spit are the speed and direction of the wind in conjunction with precipitation. For the period 2006–2018 the average annual number of favorable days for the formation of the dunes of the Curonian Spit was 36±17.

There is a complex coupling relationship between the airflow and snow cover. In a period of hours or even days, the airflow will cause the redistribution of snow, and the redistribution of snow will cause the airflow to change. This study develops a dynamic mesh technology applied in snow drifting simulation through a real-time dynamic mesh update to depict the snow surface evolution process under long-period snow drifting, and a solver application named driftScalarDyFoam based on OpenFOAM is implemented. This solver divides the long-period snow drifting process into several stages, in each of which a snow transport equation is applied to predict the spatial distribution of snow, and finally, the snow surface evolves according to the erosion–deposition model. This method that we have proposed has been validated for several measured cases, including snow distribution on a flat roof and snow distribution around a building.

An idealized morphodynamic model is constructed for formation of the aeolian sand ripples from small bottom perturbations of a two-dimensional sand bed. The main goal of the analysis is to evaluate the influence of the gravity flow (including "impact-induced gravity flow" in the reptation flux and "topography-induced gravity flow" in the creep flux) on the formation of the aeolian sand ripples and to clarify the relative contribution of various factors to the bed instability. A 3D linear stability analysis reveals that gravity flow appreciably affects the dynamics behaviors of aeolian sand ripples, which decreases the growth rate of sand ripples, tends to stabilize the sand bed, and leads to longer wavelength. We found that the competition between the destabilizing effect of reptation flow and the stabilizing effects of gravity flow leads to pattern selection. The along-crest diffusion of topography driven by impact and gravity is beneficial to the transverse stability of sand ripples, producing sand ripples with straighter and more continuous crests. For moderate values of D, the most unstable mode has zero value of the transverse wavenumber (ky = 0), thus corresponding to aeolian ripples with crests perpendicular to the wind. Moreover, when the impact angle is 9–16°, it has little effect on the characteristics of sand ripples for the initial stage of ripple development. For every increase of the impact angle by 1°, the initial wavelength only increases by about 1.5%. Coastal dunes provide essential protection for infrastructure in developed regions, acting as the first line of defence against ocean‐side flooding. Quantifying dune erosion, growth and recovery from storms is critical from management, resiliency and engineering with nature perspectives. This study utilizes 22 months of high‐resolution terrestrial LiDAR (Riegl VZ‐2000) observations to investigate the impact of management, anthropogenic modifications and four named storms on dune morphological evolution along ~100 m of an open‐coast, recently nourished beach in Nags Head, NC. The influences of specific management strategies – such as fencing and plantings – were evaluated by comparing these to the morphologic response at an unmanaged control site at the USACE Field Research Facility (FRF) in Duck, NC (33 km to the north), which experienced similar environmental forcings. Various beach‐dune morphological parameters were extracted (e.g. backshore‐dune volume) and compared with aeolian and hydrodynamic forcing metrics between each survey interval. The results show that LiDAR is a useful tool for quantifying complex dune evolution over fine spatial and temporal scales. Under similar forcings, the managed dune grew 1.7 times faster than the unmanaged dune, due to a larger sediment supply and enhanced capture through fencing, plantings and walkovers. These factors at the managed site contributed to the welding of the incipient dune to the primary foredune over a short period of less than a year, which has been observed to take up to decades in natural systems. Storm events caused alongshore variable dune erosion primarily to the incipient dune, yet also caused significant accretion, particularly along the crest at the managed site, resulting in net dune growth. Traditional empirical Bagnold equations correlated with observed trends of backshore‐dune growth but overpredicted magnitudes. Aeolian sand transport frequently occurs on Mars despite wind speeds rarely exceeding predicted thresholds for motion. This dissonance is problematic for understanding aeolian processes and the resulting geomorphologic responses in contemporary and ancient atmospheres. To address the apparent discrepancy between speeds required to initiate sand motion and transport observed from orbital and in situ observations, we conducted a series of wind tunnel experiments at Martian atmospheric pressures and used buoyancy as the similitude parameter to simulate the force required to initiate particle motion on Mars. Shear velocities were derived from velocity profiles corresponding to the onset of sporadic transport, which can induce downwind cascading motion. Here, we find that threshold shear velocities are slower than previously thought by a factor of 1.6 to 2.5. Measured wind speeds on Mars exceed our observed thresholds, thus offering one mechanism behind the dissonance between observations of transport below previous thresholds of motion. Martian wind speeds, however, rarely exceed the minimum wind speed thought to be required to move sand. To resolve this dilemma, we conducted wind tunnel experiments to determine if sand could move at slower wind speeds than previously predicted. Previous experiments used the onset of continuous motion throughout a wind tunnel to define the minimum wind speeds required to move sand on Mars and ignored sporadic transport that can occur at slower wind speeds. Here, we use the onset of sporadic bursts of sand movement in a wind tunnel to define the minimum wind speed for sand motion on Mars. These bursts can induce a cascade of motion that develops from discrete patches and grows exponentially into continuous transport, which has the potential to produce significant landform change on Mars. We find the minimum speeds necessary to initiate sporadic bursts of motion are slower than previous model estimates by a factor of 1.6 to 2.5. Our results offer one explanation for abundant ripple and dune movement and dust emission under current thin‐atmosphere climate conditions and suggest winds have sculpted the Martian landscape over billions of years. Self‐regulation of sediment transport by wind is widely assumed to derive from the partitioning of momentum from the fluid flow to the particle cloud. Consequently, the fluid stress on the bed surface is suggested by some to drop below that required to entrain particles, while the cloud is sustained by particle ricochet and splash that derive from the impacts of particles moving ballistically along the bed surface. While these theoretical constructs underpin present‐day numerical models of aeolian saltation, the particle‐borne stress has never been measured directly in either a laboratory or field setting. Such measurements are required for model validation and calibration of numerical simulations and were undertaken in vertical profile in the Trent Environmental Wind Tunnel using particle tracking velocimetry. Test sand was normally distributed with a median diameter of 590 μm. Particle momentum was calculated from the diameter and velocity of each image pair captured using high‐speed photography and then summed within each elevation band. The median diameter of the air‐borne particles was found to increase with friction velocity (u*), suggestive of sorting of the bed surface, and to decrease with elevation. Within a two‐dimensional framework, the vertical and windward components of the particle velocity were found to increase with elevation, with u* having little to no influence. Confirming the results of previous numerical simulations, these experiments show that the normalized particle‐borne stress increases exponentially toward the bed surface; however, within the lowest few millimeters where particle splash dominates, no consistent change is observed with elevation. A model that simulates surface moisture content on sandy beaches for aeolian transport applications is developed and integrated into the aeolian transport model AeoLiS. The moisture content of a thin surface layer (≈2 mm thickness) is computed as a function of wave runup, precipitation, evaporation, percolation, and capillary rise from the groundwater table. The groundwater table is simulated using a modified Boussinesq equation accounting for the overheight due to wave runup. The surface moisture due to capillary rise is simulated with an experimentally determined soil water retention (SWR) curve of the "van Genuchten" type. Hysteresis is accounted for by differentiating between SWR curves for drying and wetting conditions. The model is tested against a data set of 221 point observations of surface moisture from Noordwijk beach in the Netherlands. The measured surface moisture within the study area displays large spatial and temporal variability. The model results display an expected cross-shore gradient of moisture content, but also a large scatter when compared to the data. The scatter may partly be explained by local variability of hydraulic properties that are not accounted for within the model. Despite the scatter, the proposed surface moisture model is a starting point to integrate the transport limiting effect of surface moisture into meso-scale aeolian transport models. To facilitate model setup and the use of this surface moisture model, the soil water retention data from 10 beaches with variable grain size characteristics are provided in this study. An idealized morphodynamic model is constructed for formation of the aeolian sand ripples from small bottom perturbations of a two-dimensional sand bed. The main goal of the analysis is to evaluate the influence of the gravity flow (including “impact-induced gravity flow” in the reptation flux and “topography-induced gravity flow” in the creep flux) on the formation of the aeolian sand ripples and to clarify the relative contribution of various factors to the bed instability. A 3D linear stability analysis reveals that gravity flow appreciably affects the dynamics behaviors of aeolian sand ripples, which decreases the growth rate of sand ripples, tends to stabilize the sand bed, and leads to longer wavelength. We found that the competition between the destabilizing effect of reptation flow and the stabilizing effects of gravity flow leads to pattern selection. The along-crest diffusion of topography driven by impact and gravity is beneficial to the transverse stability of sand ripples, producing sand ripples with straighter and more continuous crests. For moderate values of D, the most unstable mode has zero value of the transverse wavenumber (ky = 0), thus corresponding to aeolian ripples with crests perpendicular to the wind. Moreover, when the impact angle is 9–16°, it has little effect on the characteristics of sand ripples for the initial stage of ripple development. For every increase of the impact angle by 1°, the initial wavelength only increases by about 1.5%. In conclusion, the influence of the gravity flow on the dynamics of sand ripples formation stage cannot be neglected.

• Wind erosion following fires in dryland agriculture is little understood. • Sediment transport is high and spatially variable on burnt and bare patches. • Measuring field-scale sediment transport complements wind tunnel experimental studies. • Unburnt wheat stubble can reduce sediment transport on nearby burnt patches. • Findings will lead to improved management of dryland agriculture. Fires can considerably increase wind erosion risk in dryland agricultural regions. While wind erosion post-fire has been extensively studied in rangeland and grazing landscapes, limited work has considered post-fire erosion on annual plant communities and annual crops. Here we evaluated the relative spatial differences in patterns of sediment transport between burnt and unburnt crop stubble sites. Following a severe wildfire, we studied the spatio-temporal pattern of aeolian sediment transport with an array of Modified Wilson and Cooke (MWAC) dust samplers on adjacent burnt and unburnt wheat stubble. Sediment collection was conducted during nine weeks over an area of 3 ha. Collection rates were converted to horizontal sediment flux to derive spatial distribution maps and perform statistical analysis. Compared to the unburnt plot, we observed that sediment transport was up to 1000 times higher within the burnt area. This could lead to damages to emerging annual crops sown after the fire if no management strategy was applied. There was only negligible sediment flux in areas with shallow and low-density stubble, which gradually increased with distance from the unburnt area. These results suggest that strips of remaining unburnt stubble could provide a potential benefit to adjacent burnt or bare plots. Patterns of sediment transport were consistent in all sampling periods and were observed at a spatial scale undetectable in wind tunnel studies, indicating that field observations could complement fine-scale experimental studies to assess environmental processes in real-life conditions. This study investigates the impact of beach sediment supply on dune volume evolution through data analysis and model simulations of the Kennemer dunes in the Netherlands. A cross-shore sediment transport model (the CS-model) is applied with local time-averaged longshore sediment transport gradients derived from bathymetric and topographic observations. The model is used to study the relative importance of different transport processes on dune volume evolution, assuming that aeolian transport from the beach to the dune is supply-limited. The wave-driven longshore transport gradients are found to explain a large part of the observed variation in the dune evolution within the study area. In accreting parts of the coast, dunes are growing due to sediment supply from longshore transport, whereas in eroding parts, dune growth depends on supply from artificial nourishments. Seasonal constructions on the beach and vegetation removal from the dunes partly impede dune growth along the considered stretch of coast. The model performance is satisfactory, being able to reproduce a considerable part of the large variation in the alongshore dune response observed in the study area. The formation of coppice dunes (nebkhas) has been attributed to both aeolian and hydrological processes, however, the interactions between these processes and vegetation dynamics are poorly understood. Additionally, a systematic study on the roles of dune geometry, morphology and hydrological processes in relation to sediment grain-size distribution in the coppice dune system is lacking. Here, we analyzed detailed grain-size distribution and saturated hydraulic conductivity for sediments collected from a series of coppice dunes with different morphological features and phases of development in a degraded shrubland in the southwestern US. Our results show that fine-grained dune sediments are associated with the wind-driven accumulation of very fine sand and fine sand (50–250 μm), irrespective of the height of the dunes. Patterns of grain-size distribution are strongly related to the relative positions along the dune-interdune system and the alignment with the dominant wind direction. Thus, the current notion that dune sediments contain more sand and less silt than interdune soils is over-simplistic. The fact that the grain-size distribution and the saturated hydraulic conductivity are heterogeneous for the dune-interdune system with different morphological features suggests that the relative contributions of aeolian and hydrological processes are distinct in the evolution of coppice dunes. Abstract: The occurrence of regional and global dust storms, observations of migrating ripples and dunes, and the recognition of aeolian sandstone outcrops demonstrate that aeolian processes have been and continue to be a significant agent of surface modification on Mars. However, the mechanisms of aeolian transport within Mars' low atmospheric pressure surface environment are still not fully understood. This work presents a synthesis of change detection observations conducted with the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover in Gale crater over three Martian years. Sediment mobility during this period was highly variable, consistent with previous orbiter‐based observations showing strong seasonal variability, with strongest winds expected during southern summer. Wind activity inferred at each change detection site helps test the accuracy of atmospheric models, as well as constrain the intensity of current atmosphere‐surface interactions and the physics of sand transport in the tenuous Martian atmosphere. Results indicate an apparent discrepancy between predicted wind speeds and the wind strengths required by classical incipient‐motion models to explain observed sediment motion. Observed mobilization of perched and/or isolated very coarse sand grains and fine pebbles (i.e., grain sizes 1 mm ≤d≤3 mm) likely requires an alternate explanation, such as very strong but infrequent wind gusts, drag‐induced rolling, or impact‐driven creep caused by smaller saltating particles. Abstract: Studies of sediment transport on developed coasts provide perspective on how human adjustments alter natural processes. Deployment of sand‐trapping fences is a common adjustment that changes the characteristics of the dune ramp and its role in linking sediment transfers from the backshore to the foredune. Fence effects were evaluated in the field using anemometer arrays and vertical sediment traps placed across a beach and dune at Seaside Park, New Jersey, USA during onshore and longshore winds. The foredune is 18 m wide and 4.5 m above the backshore. The mean speed of onshore winds at 0.5 m elevation decreased by 17% from the berm crest to the upper ramp and 36% in the lee of a fence there. Sediment transport during mean wind speeds up to 8.0 m s−1 at 0.5 m elevation was < 0.06 kg m−1 h−1 on the berm crest and backshore where fetch distances were < 45 m and surface sediment was relatively coarse (0.74–0.85 mm) but increased to 5.63 kg m−1 h−1 on the upper ramp aided by the longer fetch distances (up to 82 m) and finer grain size of the source sediment there (0.52 mm). Sediment transport along the berm crest and backshore during longshore winds, where fetch distances were > 200 m, was up to 58.69 kg m−1 h−1, about three orders of magnitude greater than during the onshore winds. Fences can displace the toe of the ramp farther seaward than would occur under natural conditions. They can create a gentler slope and change the shape of the ramp to a more convex form. A fence on the ramp can cut off a portion of sediment supply to the upper slope. Dunes provide unique information about wind regimes on planetary bodies where there is no direct meteorological data. At the eastern margin of Olympia Undae on Mars, dune orientation is measured from satellite imagery and sediment cover is estimated using the high contrast between the dune material and substrate. The analysis of these data provide the first quantification of relationship between sediment availability and dune orientation. Abrupt and smooth dune reorientations are associated with inward and outward dynamics of dunes approaching and ejecting from major sedimentary bodies, respectively. These reorientation patterns along sediment transport pathways are interpreted using a new generation dune model based on the coexistence of two dune growth mechanisms. This model also permits solving of the inverse problem of predicting the wind regime from dune orientation. For bidirectional wind regimes, solutions of this inverse problem show substantial differences in the distributions of sediment flux orientation, which can be attributed to atmospheric flow variations induced by changes in albedo at the boundaries of major dune fields. Then, we conclude that relationships between sediment cover and dune orientation can be used to constrain wind regime and dune field development on Mars and other planetary surfaces. To this end, global wind and local waves and sea level reanalysis were used to estimate the littoral and aeolian sand transport rates (cross- and long-shore), the response of the beach profile to extreme events (by means of X-Beach model) and the supply of sand from rivers all along the Uruguayan coast, obtaining 18 years of three-hourly data. For each estimated variable, its intra- and inter-annual variability and its correlation with relevant climatic indexes were calculated. Using this information the sediment budget of the coast was analyzed at different scales: global (all the Uruguayan coast; O(100 km)), regional (physiographic units, O(10km)) and local (beach nodes; O(1km)). In turn, the above information was combined with a qualitative assessment of the coastal uses, obtaining a vulnerability index used to identify priority areas to undertake detailed studies. The commonly observed over prediction of aeolian saltation transport on sandy beaches is, at least in part, caused by saltation intermittency. To study small-scale saltation processes, high frequency saltation sensors are required on a high spatial resolution. Therefore, we developed a low-cost Saltation Detection System (SalDecS) with the aim to measure saltation intensity at a frequency of 10 Hz and with a spatial resolution of 0.10 m in wind-normal direction. Linearity and equal sensitivity of the saltation sensors were investigated during wind tunnel and field experiments. Wind tunnel experiments with a set of 7 SalDec sensors revealed that the variability of sensor sensitivity is at maximum 9% during relatively low saltation intensities. During more intense saltation the variability of sensor sensitivity decreases. A sigmoidal fit describes the relation between mass flux and sensor output measured during 5 different wind conditions. This indicates an increasing importance of sensor saturation with increasing mass flux. We developed a theoretical model to simulate and describe the effect of grain size, grain velocity and saltation intensity on sensor saturation. Time-averaged field measurements revealed sensitivity equality for 85 out of a set of 89 horizontally deployed SalDec sensors. On these larger timescales (hours) saltation variability imposed by morphological features, such as sand strips, can be recognized. We conclude that the SalDecS can be used to measure small-scale spatiotemporal variabilities of saltation intensity to investigate saltation characteristics related to wind turbulence. Our understanding of aeolian sand transport via saltation lacks an experimental determination of the particle borne kinetic energy partitioned into 3 dimensions relative to the mean flow direction. This in turn creates a disconnect between global wind erosion estimates and particle scale processes. The present study seeks to address this deficiency through an extended analysis of data obtained from a series of particle tracking velocimetry experiments conducted in a boundary layer wind tunnel under transport limited conditions. Particle image diameter, as it appeared within each camera frame, was extensively calibrated against that obtained by sieving, and the ballistic trajectories detected were disassembled into discrete particle image pairs whose distribution and dynamics were then examined in vertical profile with sub-millimeter resolution. The vertical profile of the wind aligned particle transport rate was found to follow a power relation within 10 mm of the bed surface. The exponent of this power function changes with increasing spanwise angle ( θ ) to produce a family of curves representing particle diffusion in 3 dimensions. Particle mass was found to increase with θ , and the distribution of the total particle kinetic energy was found to be very similar to that for the particle concentration. The spanwise component of the kinetic energy of a saltating particle peaks at θ = 45°, with the stream-aligned component an order of magnitude higher in value. Low energy, splashed particles near the bed account for a majority of the kinetic energy distributed throughout the particle cloud, regardless of their orientation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aeolian transport of sand and dust is driven by turbulent winds that fluctuate over a broad range of temporal and spatial scales. However, commonly used aeolian transport models do not explicitly account for such fluctuations, likely contributing to substantial discrepancies between models and measurements. Underlying this problem is the absence of accurate sand flux measurements at the short time scales at which wind speed fluctuates. Here, we draw on extensive field measurements of aeolian saltation to develop a methodology for generating high-frequency (up to 25 Hz) time series of total (vertically-integrated) saltation flux, namely by calibrating high-frequency (HF) particle counts to low-frequency (LF) flux measurements. The methodology follows four steps: (1) fit exponential curves to vertical profiles of saltation flux from LF saltation traps, (2) determine empirical calibration factors through comparison of LF exponential fits to HF number counts over concurrent time intervals, (3) apply these calibration factors to subsamples of the saltation count time series to obtain HF height-specific saltation fluxes, and (4) aggregate the calibrated HF height-specific saltation fluxes into estimates of total saltation fluxes. When coupled to high-frequency measurements of wind velocity, this methodology offers new opportunities for understanding how aeolian saltation dynamics respond to variability in driving winds over time scales from tens of milliseconds to days. Dust storms that develop along the Pisco-Ica desert in Southern Peru, locally known as “Paracas” winds have ecological, health and economic repercussions. Here we identify dust sources through MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) imagery and analyze HYSPLIT (Hybrid Single Particles Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory) model trajectories and dispersion patterns, along with concomitant synoptic-scale meteorological conditions from National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research reanalysis (NCEP/NCAR). Additionally, surface pressure data from the hourly METeorological Aerodrome Report (METAR) at Arica (18.5°S, 70.3°W) and Pisco (13.7°S, 76.2°W) were used to calculate Alongshore (sea-level) Pressure Gradient (APG) anomalies during Paracas dust storms, their duration and associated wind-speeds and wind directions. This study provides a review on the occurrence and strength of the Paracas dust storms as reported in the Pisco airfield for five-year period and their correspondence with MODIS true-color imagery in terms of dust-emission source areas. Our results show that most of the particle fluxes moving into the Ica-Pisco desert area during Paracas wind events originate over the coastal zone, where strong winds forced by steep APGs develop as the axis of a deep mid-troposphere trough sets in along north-central Chile. Direct relationships between Paracas wind intensity, number of active dust-emission sources and APGs are also documented, although the scarcity of simultaneous METAR/MODIS data for clearly observed MODIS dust plumes prevents any significant statistical inference. Synoptic-scale meteorological composites from NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data show that Paracas wind events (steep APGs) are mostly associated with the strengthening of anticyclonic conditions in northern Chile, that can be attributed to cold air advection associated with the incoming trough. Compared to the MODIS images, HYSPLIT outputs were able to spatially reproduce trajectories and dust dispersion plumes during the Paracas wind storms. HYSPLIT trajectories revealed that part of the wind-eroded lithological material can be transported downwind several kilometers along the Peruvian coast and also deposited over the nearby coastal ocean, giving support to the presence of an aeolian signal in continental shelf sediments, of great importance for paleoenvironmental studies.
