Multifunctional dual-layer wound dressings hold significant promise for comprehensive full-thickness wound management by closely mimicking the native skin structure and features. Herein, we employed an innovative approach utilizing electrospinning techniques to develop a dual-layer dressing comprising a microfibrous Ecoflex®-Vanillin (Ex-Vnil) top layer (TL) and a nanofibrous Soluplus®-Insulin-like growth factor-1 (Sol-IGF1) bottom layer (BL). The tensile properties of dual-layer wound dressings were within the standard range for use in skin tissue regeneration. The TL exhibited hydrophobic properties with a contact angle value of 92.4° and significant antibacterial activity, mimicking the epidermis of the skin, thereby preventing fluid and bacterial penetration. Moreover, the dual-layer wound dressing demonstrated standard water vapour transmission rate, with 91.2 % release of IGF1 and 66.8 % release of Vnil within 5 days. Notably, the fabricated dual-layer dressing promoted cell behaviour and exhibited a significant angiogenesis effect and accelerated healing of full-thickness wound, achieving 96.4 % closure after 14 days, attributed to reduced inflammation, early blood vessel formation, and enhanced collagen density. In this work, cerium dioxide nanostructures were synthesized in an easy sonochemical way. CeO 2 nanoparticles have received much attention in nanotechnology. CeO 2 NPs, exhibit biomimetic properties depending on their size, ratio of valency on their surface, and the ambient physico-chemical properties. Nanomedicine has emerged as a promising avenue for targeted cancer therapy, aiming to develop innovative approaches with improved efficacy and reduced side effects. Here, for the production of cerium dioxide nanostructures, a new and natural capping agent called Rosa Damascena extract was utilized, as well as ceric ammonium nitrate as a metal precursor. The results of the characterization of the oxide sample fabricated in the presence of Rosa Damascena extract demonstrated that nanostructures with a sponge-like morphology, which have a pure cubic crystal phase, were formed. The cytotoxicity effect of CeO 2 NPs on glioblastoma and neuroblastoma cell lines (T98, SHSY5Y) was studied using the MTT test; cerium oxide nanoparticles exhibited cytotoxicity effects on T98 and SHSY5Y cell lines, compared to the control. The improved cytotoxic effects can be due to the plant secondary metabolites involved in the green synthesis of NPs. Several nanomaterials have been recently used to overcome various challenges in the dental domain. Bioactive glasses, a class of bioceramics, with their outstanding properties including but not limited to their strong biocompatibility, antibacterial characteristics, and bioactivity inside the body's internal milieu have made them valuable biomaterials in a variety of dental domains. The utilization of nanomaterials has improved the performance of teeth, and the incorporation of bioactive glasses has the field of dentistry at an unsurpassed level in different categories such as esthetic and restorative dentistry, periodontics and dental implants, orthodontics, and endodontics. The current study discusses the most recent developments of the bioactive glasses' creation and implementation for dental applications, as well as the challenges and opportunities still facing the field. This work provides an overview of the current obstacles and potential future prospects for bioactive glasses-based nanocomposites to improve their dental uses. Wound healing is a sophisticated process for which various treatment methods have been developed. Bioceramics with the ability to release inorganic ions in biological environments play a crucial role in cellular metabolism and exhibit bactericidal activity, contributing to numerous physiological processes. Their multifaceted roles in biological systems highlight their significance. The release of different metallic ions from bioceramics enables the repair of both hard and soft tissues. These ions may be effective in cell motility, proliferation, differentiation, adhesion, angiogenesis, and antibiosis. Unlike conventional medications, the bioactivity and antibacterial properties of bioceramics are typically not associated with side effects or bacterial resistance. Bioceramics are commonly recognized for their capcity to facilitate the healing of hard tissues due to their exceptional mechanical properties. In this review, we first explore wound treatment and its prevalent methods, and subsequently, we discuss the application of three primary categories of bioceramics-oxide ceramics, silicate-based ceramics, and calcium-phosphate ceramics-in the context of wound treatment. This review introduces bioceramics as a cost-effective and efficient alternative for wound repair. Bioactive glasses (BGs) have attracted significant attention in the biomaterials field due to their ability to promote soft and hard tissue regeneration and their potential for various clinical applications. BGs offer enriched features through the integration of different therapeutic inorganic ions within their composition. These ions can trigger specific responses in the body conducive to a battery of applications. For example, zinc, a vital trace element, plays a role in numerous physiological processes within the human body. By incorporating zinc, BGs can inhibit bacterial growth, exert anti-inflammatory effects, and modify bioactivity, promoting better integration with surrounding tissues when used in scaffolds for tissue regeneration. This article reviews recent developments in zinc-containing BGs (ZBGs), focusing on their synthesis, physicochemical, and biological properties. ZBGs represent a significant advancement in applications extending beyond bone regeneration. Overall, their biological roles hold promise for various applications, such as bone tissue engineering, wound healing, and biomedical coatings. Ongoing research continues to explore the potential benefits of ZBGs and to optimize their properties for diverse clinical applications.

Bone structures facilitate the regeneration and repair of bone tissue in regions where it has been damaged or destroyed, either temporarily or permanently. Therefore, the bone's fatigue strength and durability are crucial to its efficacy and longevity. Several variables, such as the construct's material qualities, design, and production procedure, loading and unloading cycles, and physiological conditions influence the endurance life of bone constructs. Metals, ceramics, and polymers are all routinely utilized to create bone substitutes, and each of these materials has unique features that might affect the fatigue strength and endurance life of the final product. The mechanical performance and capacity to promote bone tissue regeneration may be affected by the scaffold's design, porosity, and pore size. Researchers employ mechanical testing under cyclic loading circumstances as one example of an experimental approach used to assess bone construction endurance. These analyses can give us important information about the stress-strain behavior, resistance to multiple loading cycles, and fatigue strength of the new structure. Predicting the endurance life of the developed construct may also be possible with the use of simulations and numerical analyses. Diabetic nephropathy, characterized by inflammation and oxidative stress, poses a management challenge. This study investigates the effect of Polygonum hyrcanicum extract on diabetic nephropathy in alloxan-induced diabetic mice. In this experimental animal study, the P. hyrcanicum extract was prepared using continuous macerations. Thirty male Albino mice, divided into five groups, were induced with alloxan-induced diabetes. They received intraperitoneal injections of the plant extract (100 and 200 mg/kg) and metformin (300 mg/kg) for four weeks. Kidney and blood samples were collected to assess protein carbonyl, glutathione, lipid peroxidation, TNF-α and IL-6 levels. The amount of total flavonoid and phenolic content in the hydroalcoholic extract of P. hyrcanicum were 7.5 ± 0.3 mg of quercetin and 88.2 ± 1.3 mg gallic acid per gram of extract respectively. The antioxidant activity level of the hydroalcoholic extract was determined to be 1.78 ± 0.51 mM equivalent per gram of extract. Alloxan administration resulted in a significant reduction in glutathione levels and a significant increase in protein carbonyl, lipid peroxidation, TNF-α, and IL-6 levels. Hydroalcoholic extract of P. hyrcanicum effectively reduced oxidative stress markers and inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6), indicating its potential in mitigating diabetic nephropathy. The necessity for high operational temperatures presents a considerable obstacle to the commercial viability of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The introduction of active co-dopant ions to polycrystalline solid structures can directly impact the physiochemical and electrical properties of the resulting composites including crystallite size, lattice parameters, ionic and electronic conductivity, sinterability, and mechanical strength. This study proposes cobalt-iron-substituted gadolinium-doped ceria (Co x Fe 1-x GDC) as an innovative, nickel-free anode composite for developing ceramic fuel cells. A new co-precipitation technique using ammonium tartrate as the precipitant in a multi-cationic solution with Co 2+ , Gd 3+ , Fe 3+ , and Ce 3+ ions was utilized. The physicochemical and morphological characteristics of the synthesized samples were systematically analysed using a comprehensive set of techniques, including DSC/TGA for a thermal analysis, XRD for a crystallographic analysis, SEM/EDX for a morphological and elemental analysis, FT-IR for a chemical bonding analysis, and Raman spectroscopy for a vibrational analysis. The morphological analysis, SEM, showed the formation of nanoparticles (≤15 nm), which corresponded well with the crystal size determined by the XRD analysis, which was within the range of ≤10 nm. The fabrication of single SOFC bilayers occurred within an electrolyte-supported structure, with the use of the GDC as the electrolyte layer and the CoO-Fe 2 O 3 /GDC composite as the anode. SEM imaging and the EIS analysis were utilized to examine the fabricated symmetrical cells.

The treatment of Giant Cell Tumor ( GCT ) in the distal radius poses challenges due to the intricate anatomical features of the bone. It often necessitates the use of long implant plates or the interconnection of multiple short plates after tumor excision. However, the deployment of metal plates may increase the risk of screw loosening and various complications. To address these challenges, this study proposes the adoption of carbon fiber-reinforced PEEK (CFRP) as the base material. As a unique strategy, performance parameters (PP) were developed to compare CFRP implant plates with a Ti-6Al-4V plate using the Finite-element Method. The focus was on four elements: the screw axial force, bone growth, callus formation, and bone resorption. The investigation into the screw axial force involved analyzing the internal force of the screw. The remaining parameters were evaluated using the stress, strain, or elastic energy induced in the bones. The findings showed that the second screw endured the largest screw axial force, measuring 10.16 N under a 90-degree 10-N loading at the translocated bone. The model without a callus exerted a significantly greater force on the screw than the model with a callus, leading to screw loosening in the early stage of treatment. The maximum PP, reached 1.62, was achieved with an angle-ply [ 45 6 /- laminate, featuring a weighting fraction of 0.7 for bone growth and 0.1 for the other parameters. This model discussion focuses on links between the unique properties of relaxor ceramics and the basics of Critical Phenomena Physics and Glass Transition Physics. It indicates the significance of uniaxiality for the appearance of mean-field type features near the paraelectric-to-ferroelectric phase transition. Pretransitional fluctuations, that are increasing up to the size of a grain and leading to inter-grain, random, local electric fields are responsible for relaxor ceramics characteristics. Their impact yields the pseudospinodal behavior associated with "weakly discontinuous" local phase transitions. The emerging model redefines the meaning of the Burns temperature and polar nanoregions (PNRs). It offers a coherent explanation of "dielectric constant" changes with the "diffused maximum" near the paraelectric-to-ferroelectric transition, the sensitivity to moderate electric fields (tunability), and the "glassy" dynamics. These considerations are challenged by the experimental results of complex dielectric permittivity studies in a Ba 0.65 Sr0. 35 TiO 3 relaxor ceramic, covering ca. 250 K, from the paraelectric to the "deep" ferroelectric phase. The distortion-sensitive and derivative-based analysis in the paraelectric phase and the surrounding paraelectric-to-ferroelectric transition reveal a preference for the exponential scaling pattern for ε ( T ) changes. This may suggest that Griffith-phase behavior is associated with mean-field criticality disturbed by random local impacts. The preference for the universalistic "critical & activated" evolution of the primary relaxation time is shown for dynamics. The discussion is supplemented by a coupled energy loss analysis. Clinical application of antibiotic-free agents like silver nanoparticle-derived materials remains a critical challenge due to their limited long-term antibacterial activity and potential system toxicity. Herein, a highly biocompatible Ag nanocluster-reinforced hydrogel with enhanced synergistic antibacterial ability has been developed. Specifically, bioactive curcumin was incorporated into lysozyme-protected ultrasmall Ag nanoclusters (LC-AgNCs) and further integrated with sodium alginate (Sa) hydrogel (LC-AgNCs@Sa) through multiple interaction forces. Due to the synergistic antibacterial activity, LC-AgNCs could effectively kill both S. aureus and E. coli bacteria with a concentration down to 2.5 μg mL -1 . In-depth mechanism investigations revealed that the bactericidal effect of LC-AgNCs lies in their bacterial membrane destruction, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, glutathione depletion and prooxidant-antioxidant system disruption ability. Curcumin can mediate the intracellular ROS balance to protect NIH 3T3 cells from oxidative stress and improve the biocompatibility of LC-AgNCs@Sa. LC-AgNCs@Sa with long-term antibacterial ability can effectively protect the wound from bacterial invasion in vivo, and significantly accelerate the wound healing process due to their distinctive functions of inhibiting inflammatory factor (TNF-α) production, promoting collagen deposit and facilitating re-epithelization. Cell culture at liquid-liquid interfaces, for example, at the surface of oil microdroplets, is an attractive strategy to scale up adherent cell manufacturing while replacing the use of microplastics. Such a process requires the adhesion of cells at interfaces stabilized and reinforced by protein nanosheets displaying not only high elasticity but also presenting cell adhesive ligands able to bind integrin receptors. In this report, supercharged albumins are found to form strong elastic protein nanosheets when co-assembling with the co-surfactant pentafluorobenzoyl chloride (PFBC) and mediate extracellular matrix (ECM) protein adsorption and cell adhesion. The interfacial mechanical properties and elasticity of supercharged nanosheets are characterized by interfacial rheology, and behaviors are compared to those of native bovine serum albumin, human serum albumin, and α-lactalbumin. The impact of PFBC on such assembly is investigated. ECM protein adsorption to resulting supercharged nanosheets is then quantified via surface plasmon resonance and fluorescence microscopy, demonstrating that the dual role supercharged albumins are proposed to play as scaffold protein structuring liquid-liquid interfaces and substrates for the capture of ECM molecules. Finally, the adhesion and proliferation of primary human epidermal stem cells are investigated, at pinned droplets, as well as on bioemulsions stabilized by corresponding supercharged nanosheets. This study demonstrates the potential of supercharged proteins for the engineering of biointerfaces for stem cell manufacturing and draws structure-property relationships that will guide further engineering of associated systems.

The transition toward sustainable transportation includes adopting ecofriendly electric vehicles in public transport, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions and increases energy efficiency. One of the critical features in fuel economy improvement of electric vehicles lies in lightweight structural design. Nevertheless, the crashworthiness of the structures of the vehicles and the safety of passengers must be guaranteed in the attempt of mass reduction because the crash of large vehicles such as buses usually costs many lives. This paper, therefore, aims to present an in-depth analysis of the impact behavior of a lightweight monocoque sandwich composite microbus body under full-frontal crash conditions. The bus structure, made of a high-density polyurethane foam core and woven glass fabric-epoxy face sheets, was modeled and simulated via LS-DYNA dynamic analysis using strength-based Chang-Chang criteria to characterize the failure mechanism of the structure and investigate intrusion into the passenger survival space. Under front collision, the front panel, A-pillars, and front sidewalls of the original bus were found to be extensively damaged in the compressive fiber mode. Based on the 50 th percentile male dummy anthropometric parameters, injury indices of 0-5 intervals were proposed to evaluate occupant injury risks. The maximum front and side intrusion into the specified safety space under a maximum impact speed of 50 km/h is 208 mm at the front panel and 221 mm at the sidewall, indicating high injury indices of 3.59 and 4.81, respectively. The effects of stiffeners reinforced in the front panel and foam core thicknesses in the sidewalls, floor, and bottom parts on crashworthiness improvement were thoroughly discussed. The improved bus design can significantly enhance the safety of the occupants with a minimal increase in structural weight of merely 35.6 kg. Silicone elastomers are widely recognised as artificial skins for medical prosthesis and cranial injury assessment. Since silicone is not an ideal skin simulant due to the lack of mechanical stiffness and a fibrous structure, the present study aimed to tailor the mechanical and structural characteristics of silicone by integrating biocompatible reinforcements (namely, short polyethylene fibres and bioglass particles) to develop suitable bio-integrative skin simulant candidates. The influences of short polyethylene fibres and bioglass particles in the selected platinum silicone on the mechanical properties of silicone-based composite skin simulants were investigated with various factors, including filler concentration, KMnO 4 surface treatment of the polyethylene fibre, and particle size. A comprehensive assessment of the tensile, compressive, and hardness properties of the examined composites was conducted, and they were compared with the properties of human biological skin. The results exhibited that the elastic moduli and the hardness of all composites increased with the concentration of both reinforcements. While integrating only the bioglass particles had the advantage of an insignificant effect on the hardness change of the silicone matrix, the composite with polyethylene fibres possessed superior tensile elastic modulus and tensile strength compared to those of the bioglass reinforced composite. The composites with 5% untreated polyethylene fibres, KMnO 4 surface-treated fibres, and bioglass reinforcements enhanced the tensile elastic moduli from the pure silicone up to 32%, 44%, and 22%, respectively. It reflected that the surface treatment of the fibres promotes better interfacial adhesion between the silicone matrix and the fibres. Moreover, the smaller bioglass particle had a greater mechanical contribution than the larger glass particle. A characteristic equation for the frequencies of the T-shaped and overhang-shaped cantilevers is derived for the first time. We show that there are optimum values of the overhang lengths and widths that maximize the frequency and the number of maxima is corresponding to the mode number. The frequency of higher-order modes could be tuned by changing the overhang dimensions. Especially, a semi-empirical formula for the coupling strength κ between cantilevers in an array is proposed where the strength presents a cubic decrease with the overhang width ξ and a linear increase with the overhang length η , κ = η / ξ 3 . Metal aerogels represent an emerging type of functional porous materials with promising applications in diverse fields, but the fabrication of metal aerogels with specific structure and property still remains a challenge. Here, the authors report a new approach to fabricate metal aerogels by using ultrasmall metal nanoclusters (NCs) as functional building blocks. By taking D-penicillamine-stabilized gold NCs (AuNCs) with a diameter of 1.4 nm as an example, Au aerogels with ultrafine ligament size (3.5 nm) and good enzyme-mimic properties are synthesized. Detailed characterization shows that the obtained Au aerogels possess typical 3D self-supported porous network structure with high gold purity and surface area. Time-lapse spectroscopic and microscopic monitoring of the gelation process reveal that these ultrasmall AuNCs first grow into large nanoparticles before fusion into nanowire networks, during which both pH and the precursor concentration are identified to be the determining factor. Owing to their highly porous structure and abundant metal nodes, these self-supported Au aerogels display excellent peroxidase-like properties. Searching for new two-dimensional (2D) materials for the early and efficient detection and capture of toxic gas has received special attention from researchers. In this work, we investigate the adsorption of NO and CO molecules onto a silicene monolayer using first-principles calculations. Different numbers of adsorbates, as well as adsorption configurations, have been considered. The results show that up to four NO molecules can be chemically adsorbed onto the pristine monolayer with adsorption energies varying between -0.32 and -1.22 eV per molecule. In these cases, the gas adsorption induces feature-rich electronic behaviors, including magnetic semiconducting and half-metallicity, where the magnetic properties are produced mainly by the adsorbates. Except for two CO molecules adsorbing onto two adjacent Si atoms with an adsorption energy of -0.26 eV per molecule, other adsorption configurations show weak physisorption of CO molecules onto the pristine silicene platform. However, the sensitivity can be enhanced considerably by doping with Al atoms, drastically reducing the adsorption energy to between -0.19 and -0.71 eV per molecule. The doping and adsorption process may lead to either band gap opening or metallization, depending on its configuration. Gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) represent an emerging type of engineered nanomaterials with intrinsic enzymatic activity for both chemical and biological applications, but the catalytic activity of most reported AuNCs remains rather limited. Herein, we report a new, efficient strategy of promoting the peroxidase-mimic activity of AuNCs by tailoring their catalytic interfaces via small molecule-mediated weak interactions. Inspired by the presence of imidazole structures in many biocatalytic centers, we screened a series of imidazole-containing small molecules to evaluate their impact on the enzymatic activity of AuNCs. Through monitoring the absorbance change of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine, 1-methyl-2-imidazolecarboxaldehyde (MCA) was identified to possess the most significant effect on enhancing the peroxidase-mimic activity of glutathione-stabilized AuNCs (GSH-AuNCs) among all the examined molecules. Interestingly, the enhancement effect of MCA on the catalytic activity of these AuNCs was found to be highly reversible and can be switched on/off by simply adding MCA/dialysis treatment. Molecular dynamics simulations and further experimental analysis confirmed that these MCA molecules were adsorbed on the surface of GSH-AuNCs through weak non-covalent interactions. The underlying mechanism analysis suggested that the presence of MCA can efficiently promote the production of •OH in the GSH-AuNC system. As a proof of example, we then demonstrated that the presence of MCA can greatly increase the bioanalytical performance of AuNC-based peroxidase mimics, as evidenced by a 65-fold lower LOD for glucose detection of AuNCs@MCA than that using AuNCs only. Finally, the present system has been successfully applied for sensing the blood glucose level of both healthy people and diabetics with promising results.

Molybdenum disulfide quantum dots (MoS2 QDs) have drawn increasing attention owing to their distinct optical properties and potential applications in many fields such as biosensing, photocatalysis and cell imaging. Elucidating the relationship between the surface chemistry of MoS2 QDs and their optical properties as well as biological behaviors is critical for their practical applications, which remain largely unclear. Herein, by adopting a sulfur vacancy modification strategy, a toolbox of MoS2 QDs functionalized with different thiolate ligands was prepared. The effect of surface chemistry on the optical properties of MoS2 QDs was systematically explored by various spectroscopic techniques, revealing the important role of surface ligands in defining their absorption band gap and luminescence quantum yield. Furthermore, cellular experiments showed that the cytotoxicity and intracellular fate (i.e., lysosomal accumulation) of MoS2 QDs are closely related to the properties of surface ligands. Our results underscore the important roles of surface ligands in regulating the properties and biological interactions of these QDs, which will facilitate the future development of MoS2-based materials with precisely controlled functions for biomedical applications.

It is known that high spin-polarization and magnetism can be found even in materials with neither transition metals nor rare earths. In this paper, we report results of the structural design, electronic structure, magnetic and optical properties of new equiatomic quaternary Heusler (EQH) KCaBX (X = S and Se) compounds. Electron exchangecorrelation interactions are described by the Wu-Cohen (WC) functional and Tran-Blaha modified Becke-Johnson exchange (mBJ) potential. Ferromagnetic ordering is stable for the cubic structure of space group F43 m in which the K, Ca, B and X atoms are located at 4c, 4d, 4a and 4b Wyckoff positions, respectively. Quaternaries at hand exhibit a perfect spin-polarization around the Fermi level, which is a result of the half-metallicity with metallic spin-up channel and semiconductor spin-dn channel. The ferromagnetic half-metallic and spin-flip band gaps are 2.648(2.470) and 0.673(0.526), respectively, for KCaBS(KCaBSe). Both studied compounds have a total magnetic moment of 2.000 μ B . Additionally, the strain effect on the electronic and magnetic properties is also examined. Finally, the optical properties of the KCaBX alloys are investigated for energies up to 25 eV. Optical spectra show the metallic behavior at extremely low energies and semiconductor nature at higher energies. Polylactide foaming materials with promising biocompatibility balance the lightweight and mechanical properties well, and thus they can be desirable candidates for biological scaffolds used in tissue engineering. However, the cells are likely to coalesce and collapse during the foaming process of polylactide (PLA) due to its intrinsic low melt strength. This work introduces a unique PLA stereocomplexation into the microcellular foaming of poly (l-lactide)/poly (butylene succinate) (PLLA/PBS) based on supercritical carbon dioxide. The rheological properties of PLA/PBS with 5 wt% or 10 wt% poly (d-lactide) (PDLA) present enhanced melt strength owing to the formation of PLA stereocomplex crystals (sc-PLA), which act as physical pseudo-cross-link points in the molten blends by virtue of the strong intermolecular interaction between PLLA and the added PDLA. Notably, the introduction of either PBS or PDLA into the PLLA matrix could enhance its crystallization, while introducing both in the blend triggers a decreasing trend in the PLA crystallinity, which it is believed occurs due to the constrained molecular chain mobility by formed sc-PLA. Nevertheless, the enhanced melt strength and decreased crystallinity of PLA/PBS/PDLA blends are favorable for the microcellular foaming behavior, which enhanced the cell stability and provided amorphous regions for gas adsorption and homogeneous nucleation of PLLA cells, respectively. Furthermore, although the microstructure of PLA/PBS presents immiscible sea-island morphology, the miscibility was improved while the PBS domains were also refined by the introduction of PDLA. Overall, with the addition of PDLA into PLA/10PBS blends, the microcellular average cell size decreased from 3.21 to 0.66 μm with highest cell density of 2.23 × 10 10 cells cm -3 achieved, confirming a stable growth of cells was achieved and more cell nucleation sites were initiated on the heterogeneous interface.

The competition between charge recombination and extraction principally affects the fill factor (FF) and power conversion efficiency (PCE) of planar thin-film solar cells. In Sb 2 S 3 thin-film solar cells, the electrocharge recombination and extraction n transport layer (ETL) plays a significant role in electron extraction and determination of Sb 2 S 3 film absorber quality. Herein, a TiO 2 ETL is strategically modified using an inorganic salt zinc halide (i.e., ZnCl 2 , ZnBr 2 , ZnI 2 ), which simultaneously improves the electronic properties of TiO 2 and promotes the growth of Sb 2 S 3 films with larger grain size and higher crystallinity. The experimental results and theoretical calculations further reveal that the zinc halide can interact with TiO 2 and simultaneously bond strongly with the upper Sb 2 S 3 film, which creates a unique pathway for electron transfer, passivates the trap states, and alleviates the recombination losses effectively. As a result, an average PCE of 6.87 ± 0.11% and the highest PCE of 7.08% have been attained with an improved FF from 51.22 to 61.61% after ZnCl 2 introduction. Additionally, introduction of ZnCl 2 helps the unencapsulated devices to maintain 93% of their original performance after 2400 h of storage in a nitrogen-filled glovebox. This work develops an effective route for the optimization of ETLs and defect healing using simple and low-cost inorganic salts.

Herein, by using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate a two-dimensional (2D) of XSb (X = Si, Ge, and Sn) monolayers that have a honey-like crystal structure. The structural, mechanical, electronic, thermoelectric efficiency, and optical properties of XSb monolayers are studied. Ab initio molecular dynamic simulations and phonon dispersion calculations suggests their good thermal and dynamical stabilities. The mechanical properties of XSb monolayers shows that the monolayers are considerably softer than graphene, and their in-plane stiffness decreases from SiSb to SnSb. Our results shows that the single layers of SiSb, GeSb and SnSb are semiconductor with band gap of 1.48, 0.77 and 0.73 eV, respectively. The optical analysis illustrate that the first absorption peaks of the SiSb, GeSb and SnSb monolayers along the in-plane polarization are located in visible range of light which may serve as a promising candidate to design advanced optoelectronic devices. Thermoelectric properties of the XSb monolayers, including Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, electronic thermal conductivity, power factor and figure of merit are calculated as a function of doping level at temperatures of 300 K and 800 K. In this work, a new equiatomic quaternary Heusler (EQH) compound, MnVZrP, is predicted using first principles calculations. Simulations show the good stability of the material, suggesting experimental realization. Results show that MnVZrP is a magnetic semiconductor material, exhibiting semiconductor characteristics in both spin channels, however, with strong spin-polarization. Electronic band gaps of 0.97 and 0.47 eV are obtained in the spin-up and spin-dn states, respectively. Mainly the d-d coupling regulates the electronic band structure around the Fermi level. Strain effects on the electronic properties of the proposed compound are also investigated. Simulations give the total magnetic moment of 3 μ satisfying the Slate-Pauling rule. The main magnetic contributions are given by the Mn and V constituents. The results presented here suggest the promising applicability of EQH MnVZrP as a spin-filter. Additionally, the elastic property calculations indicate the mechanical stability and elastic anisotropy. The work may be useful in the magnetic Heusler alloys field, introducing a new member to the small group of magnetic semiconductor EQH compounds for spin-filter applications.B satisfying the Slate-Pauling rule. A fundamental understanding of nanoparticle-protein corona and its interactions with biological systems is essential for future application of engineered nanomaterials. In this work, fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) is employed for studying the protein adsorption behavior of nanoparticles. The adsorption of human serum albumin (HSA) onto the surface of InP@ZnS quantum dots (QDs) with different chirality (d- and l-penicillamine) shows strong discernible differences in the binding behaviors including affinity and adsorption orientation that are obtained upon quantitative analysis of FRET data. Circular dichroism spectroscopy further confirms the differences in the conformational changes of HSA upon interaction with d- and l-chiral QD surfaces. Consequently, the formed protein corona on chiral surfaces may affect their following biological interactions, such as possible protein exchange with serum proteins plasma as well as cellular interactions. These results vividly illustrate the potential of the FRET method as a simple yet versatile platform for quantitatively investigating biological interactions of nanoparticles., (© 2020 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. In this work, we consider the electronic and optical properties of chemically functionalized InN monolayers with F and Cl atoms ( i.e. , F-InN-F, F-InN-Cl, Cl-InN-F, Cl-InN-Cl monolayers) using first-principles calculations. The adsorption of the F and Cl atoms on the InN monolayer is determined to be chemically stable and the F-InN-F monolayer is most likely to occur. Our calculations show that the chemical functionalization with Cl and F atoms not only breaks the planar structure of InN monolayer but also increases its band gap. By using both Perdew, Burke, and Ernzerhof (PBE) and the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE06) hybrid functionals, all four models of chemically functionalized InN monolayers are found to be semiconductors with direct energy gaps and these gaps depend on the constituent species. When the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) was included, the energy gap of these monolayers was reduced and an energy splitting was found at the Γ-point in the valence band. Chemically functionalized InN monolayers can absorb light in a wide region, especially the F-InN-F and Cl-InN-F monolayers have a strong ability to absorb the visible light. Two dimensional monolayer semiconductors play an important role in designing opto-electronic devices for applications. In this paper, through the properties of the density functional theory, by running a series of first principles computations, the stability and the electronic properties of XI 2 (X = Si, Ge, Sn, Pb) monolayer structures is investigated. Our calculations indicate that 2D SiI 2 , GeI 2 , SnI 2 , and PbI 2 monolayer materials show good stabilities. Accessing on their electronic properties indicates that they have semiconducting nature with strain tunable indirect band gaps of 2.38, 2.80, 2.72, and 3.23 eV respectively which are obtained by functional (HSE06) level of theory. The obtained electronic properties can be effectively tuned by strain effects suggests the predicted 2D monolayer materials for application in new opto-electronic devices., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. Interfaces in Sb 2 S 3 thin-film solar cells strongly affect their open-circuit voltage ( V ) and power conversion efficiency (PCE). Finding an effective method of reducing the defects is a promising approach for increasing the OC and PCE. Herein, the use of an inorganic salt SbCl V OC and PCE. Herein, the use of an inorganic salt SbCl 3 is reported for post-treatment on Sb 2 S 3 films for surface passivation. It is found that a thin SbCl 3 surface and produce higher efficiency cells by reducing the defects and suppressing nonradiative recombination. Through density functional theory calculations, it is found that the passivation of the Sb 2 S 3 surface and produce higher efficiency cells by reducing the defects and suppressing nonradiative recombination. Through density functional theory calculations, it is found that the passivation of the Sb 2 occurs via the interactions of Sb and Cl in SbCl 3 molecules with S and Sb in Sb 3 occurs via the interactions of Sb and Cl in SbCl 3 molecules with S and Sb in Sb 2 S 3 from 0.58 to 0.72 V; an average PCE of 6.9 ± 0.1% and a highest PCE of 7.1% are obtained with an area of 0.1 cm 3 layer highly improves the V OC from 0.58 to 0.72 V; an average PCE of 6.9 ± 0.1% and a highest PCE of 7.1% are obtained with an area of 0.1 cm 2 . The achieved PCE is the highest value in the Sb 2 S 3 planar solar cells. In addition, the incorporated SbCl 3 layer also leads to good stability of Sb 2 S 3 devices, by which 90% of the initial performance is maintained for 1080 h of storage under ambient humidity (85 ± 5% relative humidity) at room temperature.

In the present work, we investigate systematically the electronic and optical properties of Janus ZrSSe using first-principles calculations. Our calculations demonstrate that the Janus ZrSSe monolayer is an indirect semiconductor at equilibrium. The band gap of the Janus ZrSSe is 1.341 eV using the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof hybrid functional, larger than the band gap of ZrSe 2 monolayer and smaller than that of ZrS 2 monolayer. Based on the analysis of the band edge alignment, we confirm that the Janus ZrSSe monolayer possesses photocatalytic activities that can be used in water splitting applications. While strain engineering plays an important role in modulating the electronic properties and optical characteristics of the Janus ZrSSe monolayer, the influence of the external electric field on these properties is negligible. The biaxial strain, ε , has significantly changed the band of the Janus ZrSSe monolayer, and particularly, the semiconductor-metal phase transition which occurred at b = 7%. The Janus ZrSSe monolayer can absorb light in both visible and ultraviolet regions. Also, the biaxial strain has shifted the first optical gap of the Janus ZrSSe monolayer. Our findings provide additional information for the prospect of applying the Janus ZrSSe monolayer in nanoelectronic devices, especially in water splitting technology.ε b = 7%. Poly(vinylidene fluoride)-based dielectric materials are prospective candidates for high power density electric storage applications because of their ferroelectric nature, high dielectric breakdown strength and superior processability. However, obtaining a polar phase with relaxor-like behavior in poly(vinylidene fluoride), as required for high energy storage density, is a major challenge. To date, this has been achieved using complex and expensive synthesis of copolymers and terpolymers or via irradiation with high-energy electron-beam or γ-ray radiations. Herein, a facile process of pressing-and-folding is proposed to produce β-poly(vinylidene fluoride) (β-phase content: ~98%) with relaxor-like behavior observed in poly(vinylidene fluoride) with high molecular weight > 534 kg mol -1 , without the need of any hazardous gases, solvents, electrical or chemical treatments. An ultra-high energy density (35 J cm -3 ) with a high efficiency (74%) is achieved in a pressed-and-folded poly(vinylidene fluoride) (670-700 kg mol -1 ), which is higher than that of other reported polymer-based dielectric capacitors to the best of our knowledge.

In this study, a tissue-engineered trachea, consisting of multilevel structural electrospun polylactide (PLA) membranes enveloping 3D-printed thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) skeletons, was developed to create a mechanically robust, antibacterial and bioresorbable graft for the tracheal reconstruction. The study design incorporated two distinct uses of stereocomplex PLA: patterned electrospun fibers to enhance tissue integration compared to the random layered fibers, meanwhile possessing good antibacterial property; and 3D-printed TPU scaffold with elasticity to provide external support and protection. Herein, ionic liquid (IL)-functioned graphene oxide (GO) was synthesized and presented enhanced mechanical and hydrophilicity properties. More interesting, antibacterial activity of the GO- g-IL modified PLA membranes were proved by Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, showing superior antibacterial effect compared to single GO or IL. The synergistic antibacterial effect could be related to that GO break cytomembrane of bacteria by its extremely sharp edges, while IL works by electrostatic interaction between its cationic structures and electronegative phosphate groups of bacteria membranes, leading to the loss of cell electrolyte and cell death. Hence, after L929 fibroblast cells were seeded on patterned fibrous membranes with phenotypic shape, further effective cell infiltration, cell proliferation and attachment were observed. In addition, the tissue-engineered trachea scaffolds were implanted into rabbit models. The in vivo result confirmed that the scaffolds with patterned membranes manifested favorable biocompatibility and promoted tissue regeneration.

Based on the classical shell theory, the linear dynamic response of functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) truncated conical shells resting on elastic foundations subjected to dynamic loads is presented. The truncated conical shells are reinforced by single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) that vary according to the linear functions of the shell thickness. The motion equations are solved by the Galerkin method and the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. In numerical results, the influences of geometrical parameters, elastic foundations, natural frequency parameters, and nanotube volume fraction of FG-CNTRC truncated conical shells are investigated. Foamed mortar with a density of 1300 kg/m³ was prepared. In the initial laboratory trials, water-to-cement (w/c) ratios ranging from 0.54 to 0.64 were tested to determine the optimal value for foamed mortar corresponding to the highest compressive strength without compromising its fresh state properties. With the obtained optimal w/c ratio of 0.56, two types of foamed mortar were prepared, namely cement-foamed mortar (CFM) and slag-foamed mortar (SFM, 50% cement was replaced by slag weight). Four different curing conditions were adopted for both types of foamed mortar to assess their compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) and thermal insulation performance. The test results indicated that utilizing 50% of slag as cement replacement in the production of foamed mortar improved the compressive strength, UPV and thermal insulation properties. Additionally, the initial water curing of seven days gained higher compressive strength and increased UPV values as compared to the air cured and natural weather curing samples. However, this positive effect was more pronounced in the case of compressive strength than in the UPV and thermal conductivity of foamed mortar.

The formation of polydopamine under mild oxidation conditions from dopamine solutions with mechanical agitation leads to the formation of films that can functionalize all kinds of materials. In the absence of stirring of the solution, we report the formation of polydopamine films at the air/water interface (PDA A/W) and suggest that it arises from an homogeneous nucleation process. These films grow two times faster than in solution and can be deposited on hydrophilic or hydrophobic substrates by the Langmuir-Schaeffer technique. Thanks to this new method, porous and hydrophobic materials like polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membranes can be completely covered with a 35 nm thick PDA A/W film after only 3h of reaction. Finally the oxidation of a monomer followed by a polymerization in water is not exclusive to polydopamine since we also transferred polyaniline functional films from the air/water interface to solid substrates. These findings suggest that self-assembly from a solution containing hydrophilic monomers undergoing a chemical transformation (here oxidation and oligomerization) could be a general method to produce films at the liquid/air interface.
