Besides, maternal smoking during pregnancy was associated with a greater risk of LUSC (OR=1.229; 95% CI: 0.992-1.523; p=0.059) than the risk of IPF (0R=1.001; 95% CI: 0.999-1.003; p=0.224), LC (0R=1.203; 95% CI: 0.964-1.501; p=0.103), or SCLC (OR=1.11; 95% CI: 0.77-1.601; p=0.577). CONCLUSIONS In this MR analysis, maternal smoking around birth caused a strong risk factor for the offspring to develop lung problems and CRDs in adulthood. Summary: Obesity may track across generations, due to genetics and shared family environmental factors, or possibly intrauterine programming. However, many studies only assess associations between maternal body mass index (BMI) and offspring BMI in childhood. To determine whether maternal and paternal associations with offspring BMI differ and whether associations persist into adulthood, a systematic review and meta‐analysis was done. PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Google Scholar (to October 2022) were searched. Observational studies reporting associations between maternal or paternal BMI and adult offspring BMI were included. Offspring BMIs were reported as continuous or categorical measures. Forty‐six studies were included in the systematic review. Meta‐analyses were conducted using random‐effects models. Parental BMI was positively associated with offspring BMI in adulthood. The pooled mother–offspring standardized mean difference (SMD) was 0.23 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.20, 0.26), and father–offspring SMD was similar: 0.22 (95% CI: 0.19, 0.25) in adjusted models. Offspring of mothers with overweight or obesity had the same risk of higher BMI as offspring of fathers with overweight or obesity. If these associations are causal, they support interventions targeting all family members, rather than focusing solely on mothers, to obtain a healthy weight development among offspring. Background: Based on evidence there are accepted links among early nutrition, epigenetic processes, and cognitive performance. Almond as a nutritious food could exert neuroprotective effects and improve anxiety, learning, and memory. Methods: In the current study, female rats were fed with a diet containing 5% (w/w) almonds during the mating period (two days) and gestation period (21 consecutive days). Then, the effect of the almond diet on short-term memory (Y maze), anxiety (elevated plus maze), and stress adaptation (forced swimming test) were investigated in the adult male offspring. The hippocampus (HIP), prefrontal cortex (PFC), and amygdala (AMY) of offspring were collected, and the level of cyclic AMP response element-binding proteins (CREB), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) was assessed by western blotting. Also, Monoamine oxidases (MAO)-A and B activity were evaluated via enzymatic assays. Results: Our results indicated that prenatal almond consumption improved memory, made a modest reduction in anxiety-like behavior, and increased stress adaptation in adult male offspring. Also, molecular assessments showed an increased level of CREB phosphorylation and BDNF in the HIP and PFC of the almond group, while the activity of MAO-A and MAO-B was inhibited by almond consumption in mentioned areas. Discussion: These findings introduce almonds as a beneficial diet during pregnancy, for improving short-term memory, stress adaptation, and cognitive performance in adult offspring. The current study investigated whether preeclamptic fetal programming impacts hemodynamic and renal vasodilatory disturbances in endotoxic adult offspring and whether these interactions are influenced by antenatal therapy with pioglitazone and/or losartan. Methods: PE was induced by oral administration of L-NAME (50 mg/kg/day) for the last 7 days of pregnancy. Adult offspring was treated with lipopolysaccharides (LPS, 5 mg/kg) followed 4-h later by hemodynamic and renovascular studies. Results: Tail-cuff measurements showed that LPS decreased systolic blood pressure (SBP) in male, but not female, offspring of PE dams. Moreover, PE or LPS reduced vasodilations elicited by acetylcholine (ACh, 0.01-7.29 nmol) or N-ethylcarboxamidoadenosine (NECA, 1.6-100 nmol) in perfused kidneys of male rats only. The latter effects disappeared in LPS/PE preparations, suggesting a postconditioning action for LPS against renal manifestation of PE. Likewise, elevations caused by LPS in serum creatinine and inflammatory cytokines (TNFα and IL-1β) as well as in renal protein expression of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and AT1 receptors were attenuated by the dual PE/LPS challenge. Gestational pioglitazone or losartan reversed the attenuated ACh/NECA vasodilations in male rats but failed to modify LPS hypotension or inflammation. The combined gestational pioglitazone/losartan therapy improved ACh/NECA vasodilations and eliminated the rises in serum IL-1β and renal MCP-1 and AT1 receptor expressions. The onset of complex diseases at a later stage of life has been linked with maternal folic acid (FA) ingestion. However, little is known regarding the underlying molecular fingerprints of the offspring. We integrated proteomics–metabolomics profiles and analyzed the influence of maternal FA supplementation on the metabolism of adult offspring rats. Twenty pregnant female rats were randomly assigned to a FA supplementation (FolS group, 10 mg/kg FA) or control group (2 mg/kg FA respectively). Such an omics approach revealed that the dopaminergic synapse pathway, tricarboxylic acid cycle and neural development‐related metabolites such as glutamic acid and γ‐aminobutyric acid were significantly up‐regulated in the FolS group, whereas pyruvic acid, oxalic acid and adipic acid were reduced. Purpose: The objective of this paper is to synthesize a systematic review and showcase the findings of how interparental conflict affects the adult offspring’s relationship satisfaction. Approach: The paper follows a systematic review approach adhering to PRISMA Guidelines. Findings: Three major themes were identified by the researcher that explained the consequences of interparental conflict on adult offspring. The themes are - Offspring Factors, Offspring factors feature the significant components and factors of offspring that highlight the differences in impact of interparental conflict on one’s own romantic relationship; Consequences of Interparental Conflict on Offspring, which highlights the various corollaries on offspring of divorce; and Parent Factors help understand the different parental elements that affect relationship satisfaction of adult offspring. Limitations: 4 full text articles could not be accessed by the author, and hence were not accounted for in the study. Practical Implications: The study helps practitioners comprehend the extensive effects of interparental conflict for usage in therapeutic setups. It also highlights research gaps in existing literature such as lack of studies focusing on men, LGBTQ+ population, children from polygamous families and multicultural cohorts. Value/Originality: Despite the numerous studies published on the topic interparental conflict and its effects on adult offspring, no review has been done to the author’s knowledge, thereby limiting the accessibility of precise information. Background: The risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and associated metabolic abnormalities is higher in adult offspring of patients with T2DM. Various genetic and environmental influences play a facilitatory role. These determinants can lead to the early onset of hyperglycemia, unrecognized end-organ changes, and cardiovascular morbidity. Objective: The objective of this study was to identify the presence of undiagnosed diabetes and prediabetes in the otherwise healthy adult offspring of patients with T2DM and to study early metabolic abnormalities among these individuals. Materials and Methods: The study population consisted of 100 healthy offspring aged 18 years and above, of parents with T2DM, enrolled from the medicine outpatient area. Anthropometric characteristics, routine investigations and diabetes defining parameters, fasting plasma insulin, and homeostatic model assessment-estimated insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were assessed. Results: The age and body mass index of participants were 32.30 ± 9.33 years and 25.08 ± 4.58 kg/m2, respectively. About 33.3% of males and 76.4% of females had abnormal waist circumference and metabolic syndrome was found in 26% of the offspring. Twenty-eight participants displayed dysglycemia, of which 10 were diagnosed with prediabetes and 18 with diabetes. C-reactive protein, total cholesterol, triglyceride values, apolipoprotein A, B, and their ratio, and HOMA-IR were significantly raised, and high-density lipoprotein was found significantly low in patients with this newly diagnosed T2DM. Conclusion: A significant number of asymptomatic offspring of patients with T2DM have incipient diabetes and prediabetes status, which is unidentified. Further, metabolic parameters are more deranged in those with newly diagnosed diabetes and prediabetes. Therefore, opportunistic screening for these offspring should be done routinely.

This study aimed to examine the caregiver burden among offspring of Holocaust survivors (OHS) caring for their parents during the COVID-19 pandemic, hypothesizing that caregivers whose parents suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) would report an increased burden. The sample consisted of 109 caregivers with older adult care recipient parents (average caregivers' age = 57.67, SD = 8.49). Caregivers were divided into three groups: 20 OHS who reported that at least one care recipient had PTSD, 60 OHS who reported that their care recipients did not have PTSD, and 29 comparison caregivers (whose care recipients did not undergo the Holocaust). Caregivers completed questionnaires about SARS-CoV-2 exposure, COVID-19 concerns, helping their care recipients, their experiences of caregiver burden, and perceived changes to their caregiver burden during the pandemic. The caregivers also reported PTSD symptoms-in themselves as well as in their care recipients. Relative to comparisons, OHS with parental PTSD reported higher caregiver burden in four aspects: time-dependent burden, developmental burden, physical burden, and social burden. Furthermore, OHS reported a greater perceived increase in caregiver burden during the pandemic than the comparisons. The study findings illuminate the difficulties OHS caregivers, especially those whose care recipients have PTSD, face during the COVID-19 pandemic. This group of caregivers is at risk of experiencing more distress and may need help and support. Further research is needed to determine whether people taking care of their posttraumatic parents following other massive traumatic events also feel a heavier caregiver burden-both in general and specifically during the current pandemic. Background: Maternal lipid intake in the early postnatal period has a long-term effect on the possibility of fatty liver formation in children; besides, the importance of lipid consumption during lactation for children’s health has been suggested. Green tea extract (GTE) contains abundant catechins, and it has been reported to improve lipid metabolism and prevent fatty liver. Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of maternal GTE intake during lactation on hepatic lipid accumulation in adult male rats exposed to a continuous high-fat (HF) diet from the foetal period. Methods: Pregnant Wistar rats received diets containing 13% (control-fat, CON) or 45% (high-fat, HF) fat. CON-fed mothers received the same diet during lactation, whereas HF-fed mothers received either HF diet alone or HF diet supplemented with 0.24% GTE. At weaning, male offspring were divided into three groups, i.e. CON/CON/CON, HF/HF/HF (HF-offspring) or HF/HF+GTE/HF (GTE-offspring), and were fed until 51 weeks. Results: A significant hepatic triglyceride (Tg) accumulation was observed in the HF-offspring when compared with the other offspring. This is presumed to be caused by the promotion of Tg synthesis derived from exogenous fatty acid due to a significant increase in diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase 1 and a decrease in Tg expenditure caused by decreasing microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTTP) and long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase. On the other hand, attenuated hepatic Tg accumulation was observed in the GTE-offspring. The levels of the hepatic lipid metabolism-related enzymes were improved to the same level as the CON-offspring, and particularly, MTTP was significantly increased as compared with the HF-offspring. Conclusion: This study indicates the potential protective effects of maternal GTE intake during lactation on HF diet-induced hepatic lipid accumulation in adult male rat offspring and the possible underlying mechanisms.

Evidence is building for an association between the level of anxiety experienced by a mother during pregnancy and offspring cognition and structural and functional brain correlates. The current study uses fMRI to examine the association between prenatal exposure to maternal anxiety and brain activity associated with endogenous versus exogenous cognitive control in 20-year-old males. Endogenous cognitive control refers to the ability to generate control over decisions, strategies, conflicting information and so on, from within oneself without external signals, while exogenous control is triggered by external signals. In line with previous results of this long-term follow-up study we found that 20-year-olds of mothers reporting high levels of anxiety during weeks 12-22 of pregnancy exhibited a different pattern of decision making in a Gambling paradigm requiring endogenous cognitive control, compared to adults of mothers reporting low to average levels of anxiety. Moreover, the blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) response in a number of prefrontal cortical areas was modulated by the level of antenatal maternal anxiety. In particular, a number of right lateralized clusters including inferior frontal junction, that were modulated in the adults of mothers reporting low to average levels of anxiety during pregnancy by a task manipulation of cognitive control, were not modulated by this manipulation in the adults of mothers reporting high levels of anxiety during pregnancy. These differences in brain functional correlates provide a neurobiological underpinning for the hypothesis of an association between exposure to maternal anxiety in the prenatal life period and a deficit in endogenous cognitive control in early adulthood. Resveratrol (RSV) can protect against non-communicable diseases by improving cholesterol metabolism. However, it is unclear that effects of maternal RSV intake on health of adult offspring. In this study, we examined effects of maternal RSV intake during lactation on cholesterol metabolism in adult male rat offspring. Female Wistar rats were fed a control diet (CON) supplemented with or without RSV (20 mg/kg body weight/day) during their lactation period. Male offspring were weaned onto a standard diet and maintained on this diet for 36 weeks. As a result, plasma cholesterol level significantly decreased in RSV offspring compared to CON offspring. Furthermore, a decrease in hepatic 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase level and an increase in hepatic LDL-receptor level were observed in the RSV offspring. These results indicate that maternal RSV intake causes long-term decrease in plasma cholesterol level in the offspring through suppression of hepatic cholesterol biosynthesis and promotion of hepatic cholesterol uptake. This article reports on an investigation into the relation between young adults' retrospective reports of their mothers' and fathers' division of household labor (egalitarian or traditional) and parenting styles (authoritative, permissive, authoritarian, or disengaged). Participants' own gender attitudes were also tested in relation to parents' division of labor and parenting. The sample included 294 women and men (M =19-years old) who were raised in 2-parent households and came from a range of ethnic backgrounds. When mothers' parenting was evaluated, permissive parenting was more likely among those from egalitarian households whereas authoritarian parenting was more likely among those from traditional households. When fathers' parenting was evaluated, authoritative parenting was more likely among participants from egalitarian households and disengaged parenting was more likely among those from traditional households. The association between fathers' parenting style and division of labor was specific to the division of childcare (rather than housework). Participants' gender attitudes were not related to parents' division of labor or parenting style.

Resveratrol (3,5,4-trihydroxystilbene) is a natural polyphenolic compound found in grapes and red wine and has been shown to exert protective effects on the liver preventing lipid accumulation induced by a high-fat diet. However, no studies have shown that the nutritional resveratrol intake by the parental generation has modified lipogenesis in an adult offspring. The aim of this study was to investigate whether maternal resveratrol intake during lactation affects lipogenesis in adult male rat offspring, and if it does, what is the molecular mechanistic basis. Six male pups born from mothers given a control diets during lactation (CC group) and six male pups born from mothers given a control diet as well as resveratrol during lactation (CR group) were fed a standard diet until sacrifice at 36 weeks. Adult male offspring from mothers given resveratrol during lactation (CR group) had lower body weight from the fourth week of lactation until adulthood, but no significant change was observed in the relative food intake. Low levels of plasma triacylglycerol were found in the CR group compared to the CC group. Histopathological analysis of the livers of adult male rat offspring revealed lipid accumulation in hepatocytes in the CC group, whereas lipid droplets were rare in the CR group. Hepatic protein levels of AMPK-phosphorylated at ser403, Sirt1, and Nampt in the CR group were upregulated significantly compared to the CC group. These results indicated the maternal resveratrol intake during lactation-induced activation of AMPK through Sirt1 upregulation. In this study, significant upregulation of the levels of precursor of sterol regulatory element binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c) and downregulation of the ratio of active-SREBP-1c/precusor-SREBP-1c were observed in the CR group compared to the CC group. These results suggested that proteolytic processing of SREBP-1c was suppressed by AMPK in the livers of the CR group. It is well known that SREBP-1c regulates the lipogenic pathway by activating genes involved in triglyceride and fatty acid synthesis. The present study showed significant downregulation of hepatic fatty acid synthase (FAS) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) levels in the CR group. These results indicated that maternal resveratrol intake during lactation suppressed SREBP-1c cleavage and nuclear translocation and repressed SREBP-1c target gene expression such as FAS and ACC in the livers of adult male offspring. These changes attenuate hepatic triacylglycerol and fatty acid synthesis in adult male offspring.

Background: Our previous research has shown that prenatal methcathinone exposure affects the neurodevelopment and neurobehavior of adolescent offspring, but the study on whether these findings continue into adulthood is limited., Objective: This study aims to explore the effects of prenatal methcathinone exposure on anxiety-like behavior, learning and memory abilities, as well as serum 5-hydroxytryptamine and dopamine concentrations in adult offspring., Methods: Pregnant rats were injected daily with methcathinone between the 7th and 20th days of gestation. The neurobehavioral performance of both male and female adult offspring rats was evaluated by neurobehavioral tests, including open-field tests, Morris water maze (MWM) tests, and novel object recognition (NOR) tests. The levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine and dopamine concentration in rat serum were detected by ELISA., Results: Significant differences were found in the length of center distance and time of center duration in the open-field test, as well as the times of crossing the platform in the MWM test, between the prenatal methcathinone exposure group and the control group. Results of the NOR test showed that adult offspring rats exposed to methcathinone need more time to discriminate the novel object. No gender differences were detected in the neurobehavioral tests. The U.S. National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study has followed offspring with sexual minority parents from conception into adulthood. It was initiated in 1986, and it has a 92% retention rate to date. In the current investigation, the 25-year-old offspring answered questions about sexual attraction, sexual identity, and sexual experiences; their responses were compared with those of same-age adults from a population-based survey. The analytic samples consisted of 76 offspring of lesbian parents and 76 demographically matched participants from the National Survey of Family Growth. All 152 respondents were 25 years old, 48.7% were female, 90.8% identified as White, 9.2% were people of color, and all had attended at least some college. Although most respondents in each sample identified as "heterosexual or straight," compared to their matched counterparts in the population-based survey, the female and male offspring of lesbian parents were significantly more to likely to report same-sex attraction, sexual minority identity, and same-sex experience. These findings suggest that adult offspring from planned lesbian families may be more likely than their peers to demonstrate diversity in sexual attraction, identity, and expression. Background: Hoarding disorder is associated with significant impairment for the individual such as lower rates of employment and social isolation. However, less is known about the impact of this condition on the children of people with hoarding disorder (HD). No qualitative research to date has focussed exclusively on the experiences of adult offspring of parents with hoarding difficulties. The present qualitative study set out to investigate the experiences of adult offspring of parents with hoarding difficulties, exploring the present, and longer‐term impacts of parental hoarding. Method: Seven females between the ages of 35 and 62 years were interviewed using a semi‐structured format; all reported parental hoarding within the clinically significant range. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was utilised to analyse interview transcripts. Results: Four superordinate themes were extracted from the data: psychological and emotional outcomes, coping strategies, perceptions of parental hoarding, and impact on relationships. Conclusions: The research demonstrated the significant impacts of parental hoarding on their offspring, both individually and on a relational level. Abstract Background: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of preconception endurance exercise training with voluntary exercise activity during pregnancy in mother mice on lipid profile in adult offsprings. Materials and Methods: Twenty four C57BL/6 female mice were randomly divided into four subgroups: trained in preconception period and exercised during pregnancy (TE)(20.3±1.02g); trained in preconception periods but unexercised during pregnancy (TC)(21.58±0.4g); untrained in preconception periods but exercised during pregnancy (CE)(21.02±0.23g); untrained and unexercised (CC)(19.23±0.45g). Trained mice were subjected to a protocol of moderate endurance exercise training over a period of 4 weeks for 5 days before pregnancy. The fasting blood samples were collected from adult mice(8 weeks old) and serum levels of glucose and lipid profile were measured. Data were analyzed using two way ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc test. Background and aims: Pregnancy is an important period in women life regarding different aspects including physical activity which may be effective on various health indices of offspring. One of the common and expanding women diseases is breast cancer and two of its related indices are BRCA1 and P53. Thus, the aim of present study was estimating the effect of aerobic training during pregnancy in pregnant rats on the expression of BRCA1 and P53 genes of their offspring’s breast tissue. Methods: 20 female Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into two groups of exercise during pregnancy (T) (221±9.9) and control (C) (223.8±12.8). The aerobic exercise training was performed immediately after observation of the vaginal plaque of approving pregnancy for 21 days and 5 sessions per week with moderate intensity. About 2 to 3 days before delivery, their training program was terminated. Tissue sampling of Pairs 4, 5, and 6 of breast tissues in 8 weeks offspring rats was performed to evaluate the expression of BRCA1 and P53 gene. Data was analyzed using SPSS software and statistical tests of Shapiro-Wilk to control the distribution of data, and independent t-test for comparisons of between groups. Results: Aerobic training with moderate intensity during pregnancy increased significantly mRNA of the BRCA1 gene (P=0.001), but there was no significant change in mRNA of the P53 (P=0.69). Conclusion: Considering the effect of exercise during pregnancy on increasing BRCA1 gene expression in their offspring's and association of the gene with breast, it seems that moderate exercise during pregnancy can reduce the risk of breast cancer in children. A deficiency of maternal folic acid (FA) can compromise the function and development of the brain, and may produce a susceptibility to diseases such as schizophrenia (SZ) in the later life of offspring. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of both FA deficient and FA supplemented diets during gestation and lactation on behavioural parameters, the markers of oxidative stress and neurotrophic factors in adult offspring which had been subjected to an animal model of SZ. Female mother rats (Dam's) were separated into experimental maternal groups, which began receiving a special diet (food) consisting of the AIN-93 diet, a control diet, or an FA deficient diet during the periods of pregnancy and lactation. Dam's receiving the control diet were further subdivided into four groups: one group received only control diet, while three groups to receive supplementation with FA at different doses (5, 10 and 50 mg/kg). Adult offspring bred from the Dam's were divided into ten groups for induction of the animal model of SZ through the administration of ketamine (Ket) (25 mg/kg). After the last administration of the drug, the animals were subjected to the behavioural tests and were then euthanized. The frontal cortex (FC) and hippocampus (Hip) were then dissected for later biochemical analysis. Our data demonstrates that Ket induced the model of SZ by altering the behavioural parameters (e.g. hyperlocomotion, social impairment, deficits in the sensory-motor profile and memory damage in the adult animals); and also caused changes in the parameters of oxidative stress (lipid hydroperoxide – LPO; 8-isoprostane – 8-ISO; 4-hydroxynonenal – 4-HNE; protein carbonyl content; superoxide dismutase – SOD and catalase – CAT) as well as in the levels of neurotrophic factors (brain-derived neurotrophic factor – BDNF and nerve growth factor – NGF) particularly within the FC of adult offspring. A deficiency in maternal FA, alone or in combination with ket, was able to induce hyperlocomotion and social impairment in the offspring with increased levels of lipid and protein damage (LPO, 8-ISO, 4-HNE, carbonylation of protein) within the FC, increased activity of antioxidant enzymes (SOD and CAT) in both of the brain structures studied, and also reduced the levels of neurotrophins (BDNF and NGF), particularly within the Hip of the adult offspring. Supplementation of FA (5, 10 and 50 mg/kg) to the Dam's was mostly able to prevent the cognitive damage which was induced by Ket in the adult animals. FA (10 and 50 mg/kg) attenuated the action of Ket in the animals in relation to the biochemical parameters, proving the possible neuroprotective effect of FA in the adulthood of offspring that were subjected to the animal model of SZ. Our study indicates that the intake of maternal FA during pregnancy and lactation plays an important role, particularly in the regulation of markers of oxidative stress and neurotrophins. The authors categorized communication strategies employed to exchange social support (type and person centeredness) in three online forums about parents with harmful drinking. Data included discussion postreplies over 2 months; N = 1,644 units of analysis. Support type categories were identification, emotional, informational, network, and esteem. For person centeredness, most messages were moderate (expressed sympathy, provided distraction), followed by high (helped with feelings), and then low (minimized feelings). Adult offspring of parents with harmful drinking predominantly communicate self-interested forms of support in online forums. High parental age at childbirth has repeatedly been linked to childhood malignancies, while few studies have focused on the offspring's risk of adult cancer. In this population-based case-control study, we identified 32,000 patients with lymphoid neoplasms, diagnosed at ages 0-79 years during the period 1987-2011, and 160,000 matched controls in Sweden. Using prospectively registered data on their first-degree relatives, we evaluated the impact of parental age on the risk of lymphoid neoplasms by subtype. Overall, each 5-year increment in maternal age was associated with a 3% increase in incidence of offspring lymphoid neoplasms (hazard ratio = 1.03, 95% confidence interval: 1.02, 1.04). The association was similar for paternal age and present even among individuals older than 70 years of age at diagnosis. Stratified analyses further revealed that the association was limited to certain subtypes, mostly of indolent nature. Risks of chronic lymphocytic leukemia, follicular lymphoma, and mantle cell lymphoma were 5%-10% higher per 5-year increment in maternal age, but no associations were observed for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, plasma cell neoplasms, or diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. These findings indicated that prenatal genetic or epigenetic changes influence risk of adult lymphoid neoplasms and suggest a difference in this association between aggressive and indolent lymphoma subtypes. Among the numerous consequences of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is an increase in anxiety-like behavior that can prove debilitating to daily functioning. A significant body of literature has linked gestational day 12 (G12) heavy ethanol exposure with social anxiety, evident in adolescent males and females. However, the association between non-social anxiety-like behavior and moderate alcohol exposure, a more common pattern of drinking in pregnant women, is yet unidentified. To model moderate PAE (mPAE), we exposed pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats to either room air or vaporized ethanol for 6 h on G12. Adolescent offspring were then tested on postnatal days (P) 41–47 in one of the following four anxiety assays: novelty-induced hypophagia (NIH), elevated plus maze (EPM), light-dark box (LDB) and open-field (OF). Our findings revealed significant increases in measures of anxiety-like behavior in male PAE offspring in the NIH, LDB and OF, with no differences observed in females on any test. Additionally, male offspring who demonstrated heightened anxiety-like behavior as adolescents demonstrated decreased anxiety-like behavior in adulthood, as measured by a marble-burying test (MBT), while females continued to be unaffected in adulthood. These results suggest that mPAE leads to dynamic changes in anxiety-like behavior exclusively in male offspring.

Creatine plays a crucial role in developing the brain, so much that its genetic deficiency results in mental dysfunction and cognitive impairments. Moreover, creatine supplementation is currently under investigation as a preventive measure to protect the fetus against oxidative stress during difficult pregnancies. Although creatine use is considered safe, posing minimal risk to clinical health, we found an alteration in morpho-functional maturation of neurons when male rats were exposed to creatine loads during brain development. In particular, increased excitability and enhanced long-term potentiation (LTP) were observed in the hippocampal pyramidal neurons of weaning pups. Since these effects were observed a long time after creatine treatment had been terminated, long-lasting modifications persisting into adulthood were hypothesized. Such modifications were investigated in the present study using morphological, electrophysiological, and calcium imaging techniques applied to hippocampal Cornu Ammonis 1 (CA1) neurons of adult rats born from dams supplemented with creatine. When compared to age-matched controls, the treated adult offspring were found to retain enhanced neuron excitability and an improved LTP, the best-documented neuronal substrate for memory formation. While translating data from rats to humans does have limitations, our findings suggest that prenatal creatine supplementation could have positive effects on adult cognitive abilities.

This study aimed to assess the influence of maternal dietary fat intake during pregnancy or lactation on memory of adult offspring after chronic mild stress (CMS) exposure. Female Wistar rats were supplemented daily with soybean oil/fish oil (SO/FO) or hydrogenated vegetable fat (HVF) by oral gavage (3.0 g/kg body weight) during pregnancy or lactation. On post-natal day (PND) 60, half of the animals were exposed to CMS following behavioral assessments. While the adult offspring born under influence of SO/FO and HVF supplementations during pregnancy showed higher levels of n-3 and n-6 fatty acids (FA) series DHA and ARA metabolites, respectively, in the hippocampus, adult offspring born from supplemented dams during lactation showed higher levels of their precursors: ALA and LA. However, only HVF supplementation allowed TFA incorporation of adult offspring, and levels were higher in lactation period. Adult offspring born from dams supplemented with trans fat in both pregnancy and lactation showed short and long-term memory impairments before and after CMS. Furthermore, our study also showed higher memory impairment in offspring born from HVF-supplemented dams during lactation in comparison to pregnancy. BDNF expression was increased by stress exposure in offspring from both SO/FO- and HVF-supplemented dams during pregnancy. In addition, offspring from HVF-supplemented dams showed decreased TrkB expression in both supplemented periods, regardless of stress exposure. In conclusion, these findings show for the first time that the type of dietary FA as well as the period of brain development is able to change FA incorporation in brain neural membranes.
