Hydroxyapatite is the structural prototype of the main inorganic constituent of bone and teeth and, together with fluorapatite, is also one of the principal minerals in commercial phosphate ores. The adsorption characteristics and surface chemistry of hydroxyapatite are important in understanding the growth, dissolution and adhesion mechanisms of bone and tooth tissues and in elucidating the factors in mineral beneficiation such as floation and flocculation. This volume essentially documents the proceedings of the symposium on the same topic held at the American Chemical Society Meeting in Kansas City, MO, September 12-17, 1982. It includes a few papers which were not presented at the symposium but does not comprise the entire program. This volume provides, on a limited scale, a multidisciplinary overview of current work in the field of adsorptive behavior and surface chemistry of hydroxyapatite and includes certain review articles. There are two papers each on adsorption, adsorption and its effects on crystal growth or dissolution kinetics, effects of electrochemical parameters on solubility and adsorption, and newer physical methods (exoemission and high-resolution NMR) of examining hydroxyapatite surface. There is one paper each on structure modelling of apatite surface based on octacalcium phosphate interface and on biodegradation of sintered hydroxyapatite.

Fundamentals of Adsorption is the proceedings of the fifth International Conference on the Fundamentals of Adsorption, which was held on May 13-18, 1995 at the Asilomar Conference Center, Pacific Grove, California. This conference was organized completely under the auspices of the International Adsorption Society. It was attended by 196 participants from 24 countries. Members of the Scientific Advisory Board, together with the Conference Committee, selected papers for presentation from a large number of proposals involving an especially high level of international participation. The fundamental aspects of adsorption is a subject which has grown rapidly in recent years, drawing researchers from many disciplines including materials science, chemistry, physics, biochemistry and biotechnology, and chemical, civil, mechanical and environmental engineering. Fundamentals of Adsorption serves as an excellent reference and may be used as a primary text for a graduate level course on adsorption research or as a secondary text for a course on any of the disciplines mentioned above.

Adsorption from aqueous solutions is important in many tech­ nological areas, like water purification, mineral beneficiation, soil conservation, detergency, and many areas of biology. Recently, adsorption of radionuclides from aqueous solutions has become the focus of attention in assessing the movement of radionuclides through a geologic medium from underground radioactive waste repositor ies. This volume provides a multidisciplinary overview of current work in the area of adsorption from aqueous solutions, and reviews the progress that has been made in the theoretical models for assessing adsorption. Adsorption of heavy metal ions and the effect of complex formation is treated extensively, as are the effects of surface chemical properties of the adsorbent, solution pH, and thermodynamic parameters important in the adsorption process. Adsorption of pesticides and organic polymeric species on different adsorbents are included and implications of adsorption of ions on dental materials are discussed. Also included are studies of the adsorption of radionuclides by geologic media under environmental conditions. The study of the chemical nature of the adsorbed species at the surface by X-ray photoelectron spectro­ sc.opy which often provides mechanistic information for the adsorption process is included for adsorbed metal ions on clay and mineral surfaces.

Honolulu is a most beautiful place, suitable for all occa­ sions. Its choice as the meeting site for the first Joint Chemical Congress between the American Chemical Society and the Chemical Society of Japan was praised by scientists from both sides. During this Congress, the International Conference on Adhesion and Adsorption of Polymers was held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel between April 2 and 5, 1979. We had speakers from ten nations presenting over forty papers related to the subject matter. It was a memorable event. Unlike our two previous adhesion symposia held in 1971 and 1975, this was the first time in the same conference that we discussed both adhesion and adsorption of polymers simultaneously. These two important phenomena are not only inter-related, but also equally important in adhesive technology as well as biochemical processes. The papers presented to this Conference deal with these two phenomena from both fundamental and practical viewpoints. Furthermore, with the advance of new surface analytical techniques, the actual, microscopic happenings at the interfaces can be pin­ pointed. Thus, characterization of interface became one of the major focuses of this Conference. As a result, a broad coverage of the subject matter includes statistical thermodynamics, surface physics, surface analysis, fracture mechanics, viscoelasticity, failure analysis, surface modification, adsorption kinetics, bio­ polymer adsorption, etc. Thanks to the diligence of our contri­ butors, we are now able to publish the final papers in these two volumes.

Adsorption is a separation process playing a fundamental role in several industrial areas, being used in both purification and bulk separations. The adsorbent used is the main parameter controlling the effectiveness of the process. Emerging new separations and the improvement of existing ones constitute the driving force for the development of new adsorbents with improved adsorbing properties. With this objective, recent research directions include the development of hybrid organic-inorganic and combined adsorbents. These Combined and Hybrid Adsorbents have progressively found their place, gaining importance for adsorptive applications and, consequently, for economy. They encompass significant scientific advances, pointing to the development of some directions of modern technology in the near future. This is confirmed by the impressive growth of the number of scientific publications dedicated to the subject in the last few years. The progresses in the development of these materials, the increased environmental and terrorism concerns, the needs for the integration between science and technology and the new analytical techniques available, enabling the complete characterization of these new materials, led us to the organization of a Research Workshop, aiming at making an up-to-date review of the latest achievements and an exchange of ideas between people working in several fields of this research area.

The Symposium was held to honour the memory of the late Dr. A.J. Tench who made numerous important contributions to our knowledge of the structure, reactivity and adsorption properties of oxide surfaces. This volume contains an up-to-date picture of adsorption and catalysis on oxide surfaces, not in the form of a comprehensive review but in its living aspects of work in progress. It describes detailed studies on the determination of the coordination surface ions, particularly oxide ions, by photoluminescence and reflectance spectroscopy, on the identification of adsorbed species by magnetic optical or surface techniques and on catalysis, with emphasis on new concepts such as catalysis involving excited states or structure sensitive reactions.Professionals working in the industrial and academic laboratories will find the book particularly useful as it provides a state-of-the-art account of our understanding of the structure and adsorption characteristics of oxide surfaces. The aim of this volume is to underline common aspects of dynamical properties of surfaces and adsorbates which can sustain energy transfer and to assess the role and importance of specific energy and charge transfer mechanisms in constituting the properties of surface and adsorbate electronic, vibronic, photoabsorption and similar spectra, the dynamics of adsorption/desorption and trapping processes, surface scattering phenomena involving electrons, ions or neutral particles etc. In this regard, special attention has been paid to model descriptions and discussions of inelastic interactions, screening and charge transfer processes encountered in XPS, AES, EELS, NEXAFS and electron, atomic/molecular and ion beam scattering experiments.

Adsorption From Solution discusses the significance of adsorption behavior in thermodynamic terms, with emphasis on the interplay between enthalpic and entropic contributions to the free energy. Fundamentals of Adsorption contains 2 plenary lectures and 96 selected papers from the IVth International Conference, Kyoto, May, 1992. The topics cover a wide range of studies from fundamentals to applications: characterization of porous adsorbents, molecular simulation, adsorption isotherms, diffusion in adsorbents, breakthrough detection, chromatography, pressure swing operation, etc. Model studies on adsorption, surface characterization, microporosimetry, molecular simulations of equilibrium and diffusion, computer simulation of adsorption beds, and many theoretical studies are also included.
