The Brazilian Cerrado is the richest savanna in the world. It is also one of the biomes more threatened in the country and a hotspot for conservation priorities. The main causes of deforestation in Cerrado are agricultural practices, livestock and charcoal production. Although charcoal has a minor impact, its consumption represents the deforestation of 16.000 Km² of the Cerrado. To contribute for the biomes's conservation it is very important to improve forestry supervision. Thus, in this work we present the macroscopic characterization of charcoal from 25 Cerrado's species. We simulate the real conditions of forest controllers by using the magnifications of 10x, 25x and 65x. Likewise, the charcoals micrographs are all of transverse sections due to the larger amount of anatomical information. We also analyzed texture, brightness, vitrification, ruptures and some special features. The species present several differences in their anatomical structure. Although some of them are very unique, this work does not intent to identify charcoals only by macroscopic analyses. But it might give directions to future identification of genera or species. It also provides knowledge for government agents to verify the documents of forestry origin by fast analyzing a sample of charcoal itself.

Numerosas pesquisas têm estudado os métodos não-destrutivos de avaliação de materiais e sua aplicação àqueles de matrizes complexas, como é o caso da madeira. Um dos primeiros métodos não-destrutivos investigados para aplicação nesses casos foi o da vibração transversal. Apesar de sua concepção simples, e a despeito dos grandes avanços obtidos nessa área com outros métodos, como, por exemplo, o ultra-som, o método de vibração transversal para a determinação do módulo de elasticidade da madeira revela-se como de grande potencial de aplicação, sobretudo pela precisão do modelo matemático a ele associado e pela possibilidade de sua aplicação a peças de dimensões estruturais (in-grade testing). Neste trabalho, apresenta-se o uso desse método na determinação do módulo de elasticidade de três espécies de eucalipto. Foram ensaiados não-destrutivamente e por ensaios mecânicos convencionais de flexão corpos-de-prova de 2 cm x 2 cm x 46 cm de E. grandis, E. saligna e E. citriodora. Os ensaios não-destrutivos foram conduzidos com uso do sistema BING - Beam Identification by Non-destructive Grading, que permite a análise das vibrações do material nos domínios do tempo e da freqüência. Os resultados obtidos revelaram boa correlação entre os dois tipos de ensaios empregados, justificando o início dos ensaios com peças de dimensões estruturais, para a viabilização da técnica nas práticas de classificação estrutural.Numerous researches have been developed, applying non-destructive techniques to complex matrix materials, e.g. wood. The resonance method was one of the first studied for the determination of MOE of wood. Despite the great advances obtained in this matter, with the development of special techniques like ultrasound, the resonance method reveals a great potential of utilization mainly due to the well defined mathematical model associated to the physical phenomenon and the possibility to use it on in-grade test (using commercial size lumbers). This paper presents the application of this non-destructive method to three species of eucalyptus. Using resonance non-destructive method and posterior bending static tests were analyzed specimens of 2 cm x 2 cm x 46 cm of E. grandis, E. saligna e E. citriodora. Non-destructive tests were carried out using BING - Beam Identification by Non-destructive Grading, a commercial system that analyses vibrations in the time and frequency domains. Results revealed a great correlation between MOE determined by the non-destructive and the conventional methods, justifying the beginning of an experimental program with commercial size lumbers.

A madeira de Pinus sp. tem utilização crescente na indústria madeireira brasileira. O decréscimo constante do suprimento de árvores adultas com grandes diâmetros, provenientes de florestas naturais, tornou comum a produção de madeira em ciclos curtos, com grande proporção de madeira juvenil. Resultados de diversas pesquisas têm reportado que o módulo de elasticidade e a resistência a diferentes solicitações mecânicas são seriamente afetados pela presença de madeira juvenil. Este trabalho teve por objetivo determinar o módulo de elasticidade da madeira juvenil e adulta de Pinus taeda L. a partir da constante dinâmica C LL, obtida em ensaios não-destrutivos de ultra-som. A madeira de P. taeda era originária de plantios da Estação Experimental de Itapeva - SP, sendo amostrados seis indivíduos arbóreos com 34 anos de idade. Os corpos-de-prova (4 cm x 4 cm x 45 cm) foram obtidos separadamente das regiões de madeira juvenil e adulta da prancha central, previamente submetida à secagem industrial (umidade final de 12%), para a determinação da constante dinâmica por meio de ensaios de ultra-som. Para avaliar a sensibilidade do método do ultra-som, os corpos-de-prova foram ensaiados destrutivamente à compressão paralela. Os resultados mostraram boa sensibilidade do método do ultra-som (R² » 0,90) na avaliação desse parâmetro mecânico da madeira juvenil e adulta.Pinus sp. wood has an increasing importance on supplying brazilian wood industry. The diminution of adult and large diameter trees supply deriving from natural tropical forests, became usual the production of wood on short rotation plantation, with considerable proportion of juvenil wood. Results from several researches have been demonstrated that MOE and mechanical strength are strongly affected by juvenile wood occurrence. This research was developed with the main objective of correlating dynamic modulus of elasticity (non-destructive ultrasound tests) and MOE. Six trees of Pinus taeda, 34 years old from the controlled plantations of the Estação Experimental de Itapeva - SP, Brazil, were randomly chosen for the experimental program. Each tree resulted on four logs (3.75 m long), and from each log the central board was used (80 mm thick). Boards were dried to 12% moisture content and from them longitudinal specimens (4 cm x 4 cm x 45 cm) were sawed. All specimens were submitted to non-destructive tests (ultrasonic method) and destructive conventional compression tests. Results had shown good sensitivity of the method of the ultrasound (R² » 0,90) on evaluating MOE of juvenile and mature wood.

ABSTRACT This study evaluated the quality of heartwood and sapwood from mature trees of three species of Eucalyptus, by means of the qualification of their proportion, determination of basic and apparent density using non-destructive attenuation of gamma radiation technique and calculation of the density uniformity index. Six trees of each species (Eucalyptus grandis - 18 years old, Eucalyptus tereticornis - 35 years old and Corymbia citriodora - 28 years old) were used in the experimental program. The heartwood and sapwood were delimited by macroscopic analysis and the calculation of areas and percentage of heartwood and sapwood were performed using digital image. The uniformity index was calculated following methodology which numerically quantifies the dispersion of punctual density values of the wood around the mean density along the radius. The percentage of the heartwood was higher than the sapwood in all species studied. The density results showed no statistical difference between heartwood and sapwood. Differently from the density results, in all species studied there was statistical differences between uniformity indexes for heartwood and sapwood regions, making justifiable the inclusion of the density uniformity index as a quality parameter for Eucalyptus wood.
