The scope of this paper is to outline the main marks and performances of the MagneDyn beamline, which was designed and built to perform ultrafast magnetodynamic studies in solids. Open to users since 2019, MagneDyn operates with variable circular and linear polarized femtosecond pulses delivered by the externally laser-seeded FERMI free-electron laser (FEL). The very high degree of polarization, the high pulse-to-pulse stability, and the photon energy tunability in the 50-300 eV range allow performing advanced time-resolved magnetic dichroic experiments at the K-edge of light elements, e.g., carbon and at the M- and N-edge of the 3d-transition-metals and rare earth elements, respectively. To this end, two experimental end-stations are available. The first is equipped with an in situ dedicated electromagnet, a cryostat, and an extreme ultraviolet Wollaston-like polarimeter. The second, designed for carry-in user instruments, hosts also a spectrometer for pump-probe resonant x-ray emission and inelastic spectroscopy experiments with a sub-eV energy resolution. A Kirkpatrick-Baez active optics system provides a minimum focus of similar to 20x20 mu m(2) FWHM at the sample. A pump laser setup, synchronized with the FEL-laser seeding system, delivers sub-picosecond pulses with photon energies ranging from the mid-IR to near-UV for optical pump-FEL probe experiments with a minimal pump-probe jitter of few femtoseconds. The overall combination of these features renders MagneDyn a unique state-of-the-art tool for studying ultrafast magnetic and resonant emission phenomena in solids. Static and dynamic cues within certain spatiotemporal proximity are used to evoke respective global percepts of form and motion. The limiting factors in this process are, first, internal noise, which indexes local orientation/direction detection, and, second, sampling efficiency, which relates to the processing and the representation of global orientation/direction. These parameters are quantified using the equivalent noise (EN) paradigm. EN has been implemented with just two levels: high and low noise. However, when using this simplified version, one must assume the shape of the overall noise dependence, as the intermediate points are missing. Here, we investigated whether two distinct EN methods, the 8-point and the simplified 2-point version, reveal comparable parameter estimates. This was performed for three different types of stimuli: random dot kinematograms, and static and dynamic translational Glass patterns, to investigate how constant internal noise estimates are, and how sampling efficiency might vary over tasks. The results indicated substantial compatibility between estimates over a wide range of external noise levels sampled with eight data points, and a simplified version producing two highly informative data points. Our findings support the use of a simplified procedure to estimate essential form-motion integration parameters, paving the way for rapid and critical applications to populations that cannot tolerate protracted measurements.

In this work, we applied the singular value decomposition (SVD) method to a set of monochromatic images to extract the dominant physical contributions to image formation. We showed that the first two principal components can be related to an arbitrary pair of basis material in mathematically enclosed expression. The later principal components are assumed to carry mostly sub-leading image formation effects, noise, and reconstruction artifact contribution. The proof of concept is shown on numerical (linear) images and later confirmed on physical spectral CT phantom images obtained with monochromatic x-ray radiation at Elettra synchrotron in Trieste, Italy. Following material decomposition, we also performed a quantitative description of tissue-equivalent phantom materials in terms of material density and effective atomic number.

Objective: Our goal is to evaluate the effects of heat and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation on P3 facial respirator microstructure. Intervention: P3 facial filters were exposed to dry heat and UV sterilization procedures. Methods: P3 facial filter samples underwent a standardized sterilization process based on dry heat and UV irradiation techniques. We analyzed critical parameters of internal microstructure, such as fiber thickness and porosity, before and after sterilization, using 3D data obtained with synchrotron radiation-based X-ray computed microtomography (micro-CT). The analyzed filter has two inner layers called the “finer” and “coarser” layers. The “finer” layer consists of a dense fiber network, while the “coarser” layer has a less compact fiber network. Results: Analysis of 3D images showed no statistically significant differences between the P3 filter of the controls and the dry heat/UV sterilized samples. In particular, averages fiber thickness in the finer layer of the control and the 60° dry heated and UV-irradiated sample groups was almost identical. Average fiber thickness for the coarser layer of the control and the 60° dry heated and UV-irradiated sample groups was very similar, measuring 19.33 µm (±0.47), 18.33 µm (±0.47), and 18.66 µm (±0.47), respectively. There was no substantial difference in maximum fiber thickness in the finer layers and coarser layers. For the control group samples, maximum thickness was on average 11.43 µm (±1.24) in the finer layer and 59.33 µm (±6.79) in the coarser layer. Similarly, the 60° dry heated group samples were thickened 12.2 µm (±0.21) in the finer layer and 57.33 µm (±1.24) in the coarser layer, while for the UV-irradiated group, the mean max thickness was 12.23 µm (±0.90) in the finer layer and 58.00 µm (±6.68) in the coarser layer. Theoretical porosity analysis resulted in 74% and 88% for the finer and coarser layers. The finer layers’ theoretical porosity tended to decrease in dry heat and UV-irradiated samples compared with the respective control samples. Conclusions: Dry heat and UV sterilization processes do not substantially alter the morphometry of the P3 filter samples’ internal microstructure, as studied with micro-CT. The current study suggests that safe P3 filter facepiece reusability is theoretically feasible and should be further investigated.

Photon-counting CT (PCCT) is an emerging CT technology that uses photon-counting detectors (PCDs) to offer better spatial resolution, higher contrast, lower noise, and material-specific imaging as compared to conventional energy-integrating CT. To study the efficiency and performance of PCCT technologies in clinical use, virtual imaging trials (VITs) can be used. VITs use computational human phantoms to generate scanner-specific CT images. The integration of PCCT into VITs requires modeling the signal generation and signal processing in the detector and electronics, which includes incorporating the effects of nonidealities in PCDs such as crosstalk, charge sharing, and pulse pileup. These non-idealities adversely affect the image quality of PCCT systems, and their inclusion is important in accurate and realistic modeling of the PCDs. The existing scanner simulators model either charge sharing or pulse pileup but not their combined effects. The purpose of this study was to develop an experimentally validated modular detector response model that accounted for the combined effects of crosstalk, charge sharing, and pulse pileup in CdTe- and Si-based PCDs. It can be used to simulate variety of PCCT designs, including different detector materials and geometry, facilitating the evaluation and study of present and future PCCTs. The validation showed a close agreement with the experimental data acquired using Pixirad-1/Pixie-III PCDs. The platform was used to generate spatio-energetic covariance correlation matrices that integrated with a VIT framework called DukeSim to simulate scanner specific PCCT images.

Purpose: The SYRMA-3D collaboration is setting up a breast computed tomography (bCT) clinical program at the Elettra synchrotron radiation facility in Trieste, Italy. Unlike the few dedicated scanners available at hospitals, synchrotron radiation bCT requires the patient's rotation, which in turn implies a long scan duration (from tens of seconds to few minutes). At the same time, it allows the achievement of high spatial resolution. These features make synchrotron radiation bCT prone to motion artifacts. This article aims at assessing and compensating for motion artifacts through an optical tracking approach. Methods: In this study, patients’ movements due to breathing have been first assessed on seven volunteers and then simulated during the CT scans of a breast phantom and a surgical specimen, by adding a periodic oscillatory motion (constant speed, 1 mm amplitude, 12 cycles/minute). CT scans were carried out at 28 keV with a mean glandular dose of 5 mGy. Motion artifacts were evaluated and a correction algorithm based on the optical tracking of fiducial marks was introduced. A quantitative analysis based on the structural similarity (SSIM) index and the normalized mean square error (nMSE) was performed on the reconstructed CT images. Results: CT images reconstructed through the optical tracking procedure were found to be as good as the motionless reference image. Moreover, the analysis of SSIM and nMSE demonstrated that an uncorrected motion of the order of the system's point spread function (around 0.1 mm in the present case) can be tolerated. Conclusions: Results suggest that a motion correction procedure based on an optical tracking system would be beneficial in synchrotron radiation bCT.

Glass patterns (GPs) have been widely employed to investigate the mechanisms underlying processing of global form from locally oriented cues. The current study aimed to psychophysically investigate the level at which global orientation is extracted from translational GPs using the tilt after-effect (TAE) and manipulating the spatiotemporal properties of the adapting pattern. We adapted participants to translational GPs and tested with sinewave gratings. In Experiment 1, we investigated whether orientation-selective units are sensitive to the temporal frequency of the adapting GP. We used static and dynamic translational GPs, with dynamic GPs refreshed at different temporal frequencies. In Experiment 2, we investigated the spatial frequency selectivity of orientation-selective units by manipulating the spatial frequency content of the adapting GPs. The results showed that the TAE peaked at a temporal frequency of ∼30 Hz, suggesting that orientation-selective units responding to translational GPs are sensitive to high temporal frequencies. In addition, TAE from translational GPs peaked at lower spatial frequencies than the dipoles’ spatial constant. These effects are consistent with form-motion integration at low and intermediate levels of visual processing.

The implementation of organic semiconductor (OSC) materials in X-ray detectors provides exciting new opportunities for developing a new generation of biocompatible devices with high potential for the fabrication of sensitive and low-cost X-ray imaging systems. Here, the fabrication of high performance organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) based on blends of 1,4,8,11-tetramethyl-6,13-triethylsilylethynyl pentacene (TMTES) with polystyrene is reported. The films are printed employing a low cost and high-throughput deposition technique. The devices exhibit excellent electrical characteristics with a high mobility and low density of hole traps, which is ascribed to the favorable herringbone packing (different from most pentacene derivatives) and the vertical phase separation in the blend films. As a consequence, an exceptional high sensitivity of (4.10 ± 0.05) × 1010 µCGy–1cm–3 for X-ray detection is achieved, which is the highest reported so far for a direct X-ray detector based on a tissue equivalent full organic active layer, and is higher than most perovskite film-based X-ray detectors. As a proof of concept to demonstrate the high potential of these devices, an X-ray image with sub-millimeter pixel size is recorded employing a 4-pixel array. Migraine is a common neurological disorder with strong links to vision. Interictal migraine is thought to be characterised by internal noise in the brain, possibly due to increased variability in neural firing, which can be estimated using equivalent noise tasks. High-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (hf-tRNS) can be used to modulate levels of internal noise in the brain, and so presents a possible therapy to redress noise levels in the migraine brain. This is a case-control study using a 2-alternative forced choice (2AFC) design. Hf-tRNS and Sham control stimulation were used alongside a global motion direction discrimination task and visually based equivalent noise tasks. The migraine group demonstrated increased baseline internal noise levels compared to the control group. Internal noise levels, and sampling, were reduced using hf-tRNS but not Sham stimulation. However, there were no differences in terms of coherence thresholds, slopes, and lapse rate for global motion discrimination between the two groups. This is the first demonstration of the possibility of decreasing internal noise levels in migraine using hf-tRNS. Future work could explore the possibility of neurostimulation as a therapy for migraine.

Item does not contain fulltext Breast computed tomography (BCT) is an emerging application of X-ray tomography in radiological practice. A few clinical prototypes are under evaluation in hospitals and new systems are under development aiming at improving spatial and contrast resolution and reducing delivered dose. At the same time, synchrotron-radiation phase-contrast mammography has been demonstrated to offer substantial advantages when compared with conventional mammography. At Elettra, the Italian synchrotron radiation facility, a clinical program of phase-contrast BCT based on the free-space propagation approach is under development. In this paper, full-volume breast samples imaged with a beam energy of 32 keV delivering a mean glandular dose of 5 mGy are presented. The whole acquisition setup mimics a clinical study in order to evaluate its feasibility in terms of acquisition time and image quality. Acquisitions are performed using a high-resolution CdTe photon-counting detector and the projection data are processed via a phase-retrieval algorithm. Tomographic reconstructions are compared with conventional mammographic images acquired prior to surgery and with histologic examinations. Results indicate that BCT with monochromatic beam and free-space propagation phase-contrast imaging provide relevant three-dimensional insights of breast morphology at clinically acceptable doses and scan times.

An extension to Geant4 Monte Carlo code was developed to take into account inter-atomic (molecular) interference effects in X-ray coherent scattering. Based on our previous works, the developed code introduces a set of form factors including interference effects for a selected variety of amorphous materials useful for medical applications, namely various tissues and plastics used to build phantoms. The code is easily upgradable in order to include new materials and offers the possibility to model a generic tissue as a combination of a set of four basic components. A dedicated Geant4 application for the simulation of X-ray diffraction experiments was created to validate the proposed upgrade of Rayleigh scattering model. A preliminary validation of the code obtained through a comparison with EGS4 and an experiment is presented, showing a satisfactory agreement.

A Phase-Contrast breast CT facility based on a high-resolution CdTe photon-counting detector is under development at Elettra, the Italian Synchrotron Radiation (SR) facility in Trieste. The CT system exploits propagation-based phasecontrast imaging and phase-retrieval algorithm. The voxel size is 57×57×50 μm3 and the delivered MGDs, about 5 mGy, are comparable with clinical breast CT systems. In the present contribution, the comparisons between histological breast cancers and full breast CT images are presented from samples of breast mastectomy. The high resolution of the breast CT images and low noise due to the phase contrast allow a very fine matching between X-ray CT and histology at acceptable delivered doses.

Glass patterns (GPs) consist of randomly distributed dot pairs (dipoles) whose orientations are determined by specific geometric transforms. We investigated the role of visuospatial attention in the processing of global form from GPs by measuring the effect of distraction on adaptation to GPs. In the nondistracted condition, observers were adapted to coherent GPs. After the adaptation period, they were presented with a test GP divided in two halves along the vertical and were required to judge which side of the test GP was more coherent. In the attention-distracted condition, a high-load rapid serial visual presentation task was performed during the adapting period. The magnitude of the form after-effect was measured using a technique that measures the coherence level at which the test GP appears random. The rationale was that if attention has a modulatory effect on the spatial summation of dipoles, in the attention-distracted condition, we should expect a weaker form after-effect. However, the results showed stronger form after-effect in the attention-distracted condition than in the nondistracted condition, suggesting that distraction during adaptation increases the strength of form adaptation. Additional experiments suggested that distraction may reduce the spatial suppression from large-scale textures, strengthening the spatial summation of local-oriented signals.

Purpose: Dual-energy image subtraction represents a useful tool to improve the detectability of small lesions, especially in dense breasts. A feature it shares with all x-ray imaging techniques is the appearance of fluctuations in the texture of the background, which can obscure the visibility of interesting details. The aim of the work is to investigate the main noise sources, in order to create a better performing subtraction mechanism. In particular, the structural noise cancellation was achieved by means of a suitable extension of the dual-energy algorithm. Methods: The effect of the cancellation procedure was tested on an analytical simulation of a target with varying structural composition. Subsequently, the subtraction algorithm was also applied to a set of actual radiographs of a breast phantom exhibiting a nonuniform background pattern. The background power spectra of the outcomes were computed and compared to the ones obtained from a standard subtraction algorithm. Results: The comparison between the standard and the proposed cancellations showed an overall suppression of the magnitudes of the spectra, as well as a flattening of the frequency dependence of the structural component of the noise. Conclusions: The proposed subtraction procedure provides an effective cancellation of the residual background fluctuations. When combined with the polychromatic correction already described in a companion publication, it results in a high performing dual-energy subtraction scheme for commercial mammography units.

A quantitative characterization of the soft tissues composing the human breast is achieved by means of a monochromatic CT phase-contrast imaging system, through accurate measurements of their attenuation coefficients within the energy range of interest for breast CT clinical examinations. Quantitative measurements of linear attenuation coefficients are performed on tomographic reconstructions of surgical samples, using monochromatic x-ray beams from a synchrotron source and a free space propagation setup. An online calibration is performed on the obtained reconstructions, in order to reassess the validity of the standard calibration procedure of the CT scanner. Three types of healthy tissues (adipose, glandular, and skin) and malignant tumors, when present, are considered from each sample. The measured attenuation coefficients are in very good agreement with the outcomes of similar studies available in the literature, although they span an energy range that was mostly neglected in the previous studies. No globally significant differences are observed between healthy and malignant dense tissues, although the number of considered samples does not appear sufficient to address the issue of a quantitative differentiation of tumors. The study assesses the viability of the proposed methodology for the measurement of linear attenuation coefficients, and provides a denser sampling of attenuation data in the energy range useful to breast CT.

Background High-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (hf-tRNS) is a neuromodulatory technique consisting of the application of alternating current at random intensities and frequencies. hf-tRNS induces random neural activity in the system that may boost the sensitivity of neurons to weak inputs. Stochastic resonance is a nonlinear phenomenon whereby the addition of an optimal amount of noise results in performance enhancement, whereas further noise increments impair signal detection or discrimination. Objective The aim of the study was to assess whether modulatory effects of hf-tRNS rely on the stochastic resonance phenomenon, and what is the specific neural mechanism producing stochastic resonance. Method Observers performed a two-interval forced choice motion direction discrimination task in which they had to report whether two moving patches presented in two temporal intervals had the same or different motion directions. hf-tRNS was administered at five intensity levels (0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.25 mA). Results The results showed a significant improvement in performance when hf-tRNS was applied at 1.5 mA, representing the optimal level of external noise. However, stimulation intensity at 2.25 mA significantly impaired direction discrimination performance. An equivalent noise (EN) analysis, used to assess how hf-tRNS modulates the mechanisms underlying global motion processing, showed an increment in motion signal integration with the optimal current intensity, but reduced motion signal integration at 2.25 mA. Conclusion These results indicate that hf-tRNS-induced noise modulates neural signal-to-noise ratio in a way that is compatible with the stochastic resonance phenomenon.

A program devoted to performing the first in vivo synchrotron radiation (SR) breast computed tomography (BCT) is ongoing at the Elettra facility. Using the high spatial coherence of SR, phase-contrast (PhC) imaging techniques can be used. The latest high-resolution BCT acquisitions of breast specimens, obtained with the propagation-based PhC approach, are herein presented as part of the SYRMA-3D collaboration effort toward the clinical exam. Images are acquired with a [Formula: see text] dead-time-free single-photon-counting CdTe detector. The samples are imaged at 32 and 38 keV in a continuous rotating mode, delivering 5 to 20 mGy of mean glandular dose. Contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and spatial resolution performances are evaluated for both PhC and phase-retrieved images, showing that by applying the phase-retrieval algorithm a five-time CNR increase can be obtained with a minor loss in spatial resolution across soft tissue interfaces. It is shown that, despite having a poorer CNR, PhC images can provide a sharper visualization of microcalcifications, thus being complementary to phase-retrieved images. Furthermore, the first full-volume scan of a mastectomy sample ([Formula: see text]) is reported. This investigation into surgical specimens indicates that SR BCT in terms of CNR, spatial resolution, scan duration, and scan volume is feasible.

We present a comparison between full field digital mammography and synthetic mammography, performed on several mammography systems from four different manufacturers. The analysis is carried out on both the digital and synthetic images of two commercially available mammography phantoms, and focuses on a set of objective metrics that encode the geometrical appearance of imaging features of diagnostic interest. In particular, we measured sizes and contrasts of several clusters of microcalcification specks, shapes and contrasts of circular masses, and the power spectrum of background regions mimicking the heterogeneous texture of the breast parenchyma. Despite the potential issues of tomosynthesis in terms of image blurring, the synthetic images do not highlight any globally significant differences in the rendering of the details of interest, when compared to the original digital mammograms: relative contrasts are generally preserved, as well as the geometry of broad structures. We conclude that, as far as the considered objective metrics are concerned, the image quality of synthetic mammography does not exhibit significant differences with respect to the one of full field digital mammography, for all the considered systems.

Purpose: The quality of a radiography system is affected by several factors, a major one being the focal spot size of the x-ray tube. In fact, the measurement of such size is recognized to be of primary importance during acceptance tests and image quality evaluations of clinical radiography systems. The most common device providing an image of the focal spot emission distribution is a pin-hole camera, which requires a high tube loading in order to produce a measurable signal. This work introduces an alternative technique to obtain an image of the focal spot, through the processing of a single radiograph of a simple test object, acquired with a suitable magnification. Methods: The radiograph of a magnified sharp edge is a well-established method to evaluate the extension of the focal spot profile along the direction perpendicular to the edge. From a single radiograph of a circular x-ray absorber, it is possible to extract simultaneously the radial profiles of several sharp edges with different orientations. The authors propose a technique that allows to obtain an image of the focal spot through the processing of these radial profiles by means of a pseudo-CT reconstruction technique. In order to validate this technique, the reconstruction has been applied to the simulated radiographs of an ideal disk-shaped absorber, generated by various simulated focal spot distributions. Furthermore, the method has been applied to the focal spot of a commercially available mammography unit. Results: In the case of simulated radiographs, the results of the reconstructions have been compared to the original distributions, showing an excellent agreement for what regards both the overall distribution and the full width at half maximum measurements. In the case of the experimental test, the method allowed to obtain images of the focal spot that have been compared with the results obtained through standard techniques, namely, pin-hole camera and slit camera. Conclusions: The method was proven to be effective for simulated images and the results of the experimental test suggest that it could be considered as an alternative technique for focal spot distribution evaluation. The method offers the possibility to measure the actual focal spot size and emission distribution at the same exposure conditions as clinical routine, avoiding high tube loading as in the case of the pin-hole imaging technique.

BACKGROUND: High frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (hf-tRNS) facilitates performance in several perceptual and cognitive tasks, however, little is known about the underlying modulatory mechanisms. OBJECTIVE: In this study we compared the effects of hf-tRNS to those of anodal and cathodal tDCS in a global motion direction discrimination task. An equivalent noise (EN) paradigm was used to assess how hf-tRNS modulates the mechanisms underlying local and global motion processing. METHOD: Motion coherence threshold and slope of the psychometric function were estimated using an 8AFC task in which observers had to discriminate the motion direction of a random dot kinematogram presented either in the left or right visual hemi-field. During the task hf-tRNS, anodal and cathodal tDCS were delivered over the left hMT+. In a subsequent experiment we implemented an EN paradigm in order to investigate the effects of hf-tRNS on the mechanisms involved in visual motion integration (i.e., internal noise and sampling). RESULTS: hf-tRNS reduced the motion coherence threshold but did not affect the slope of the psychometric function, suggesting no modulation of stimulus discriminability. Anodal and cathodal tDCS did not produce any modulatory effects. EN analysis in the last experiment found that hf-tRNS modulates sampling but not internal noise, suggesting that hf-tRNS modulates the integration of local motion cues. CONCLUSION: hf-tRNS interacts with the output neurons tuned to directions near to the directional signal, incrementing the signal-to-noise ratio and the pooling of local motion cues and thus increasing the sensitivity for global moving stimuli.

Background The SYRMA-3D collaboration is setting up the first clinical trial of phase-contrast breast CT with synchrotron radiation at the Elettra synchrotron facility in Trieste, Italy. In this communication, a quality control protocol for breast CT is proposed, and a first test of image quality measurements is performed by means of a custom-made radiographic phantom. Materials and methods A set of projections is acquired and used to perform a CT reconstruction of two selected portions of the phantom. Such portions contain a uniform layer of water and a set of radiographic inserts, respectively. Together, they allow to perform several image quality measurements, namely CT number linearity, reconstruction accuracy, uniformity, noise, and low contrast resolution. All measurements are repeated at different beam energies in the range of interest, and at two different dose values. Results Measurements show a good linearity in the soft tissue range, paired to a high accuracy of the CT number reconstruction. Uniformity and noise measurements show that reconstruction inhomogeneities are bound to a few percent of the average pixel values. However, low contrast detectability is limited to the higher portion of the explored energy range. Conclusions The results of the measurements are satisfactory in terms of their quality, feasibility and reproducibility. With minimal modifications, the phantom is promising to allow a set of image quality measurements to be used in the upcoming clinical trial.

X-ray phase imaging has the potential to dramatically improve soft tissue contrast sensitivity, which is a crucial requirement in many diagnostic applications such as breast imaging. In this context, a program devoted to perform in vivo phase-contrast synchrotron radiation breast computed tomography is ongoing at the Elettra facility (Trieste, Italy). The used phase-contrast technique is the propagation-based configuration, which requires a spatially coherent source and a sufficient object-to-detector distance. In this work the effect of this distance on image quality is quantitatively investigated scanning a large breast surgical specimen at three object-to-detector distances (1.6, 3, 9 m) and comparing the images both before and after applying the phase-retrieval procedure. The sample is imaged at 30 keV with a [Formula: see text] pixel pitch CdTe single-photon-counting detector, positioned at a fixed distance of 31.6 m from the source. The detector fluence is kept constant for all acquisitions. The study shows that, at the largest distance, a 20-fold SNR increase can be obtained by applying the phase-retrieval procedure. Moreover, it is shown that, for phase-retrieved images, changing the object-to-detector distance does not affect spatial resolution while boosting SNR (four-fold increase going from the shortest to the largest distance). The experimental results are supported by a theoretical model proposed by other authors, whose salient results are presented in this paper.

A program devoted to perform the first in-vivo monochromatic breast computed tomography (BCT) is ongoing at the Elettra Synchrotron Facility. Since the synchrotron radiation provides high energy resolution and spatial coherence, phase-contrast (PhC) imaging techniques can be used. The latest high resolution BCT acquisitions of breast specimens, obtained with the propagation-based PhC approach, are herein presented as part of a wider framework, devoted to the optimization of acquisition and reconstruction parameters towards the clinical exam. Images are acquired with a state-of-the-art dead-time-free single-photon-counting CdTe detector with a 60 µm pixel size. The samples are imaged at 32 and 38 keV in continuous rotating mode, delivering 5-20 mGy of mean glandular dose (MGD). Contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and spatial resolution performances are evaluated for both absorption and phase-retrieved images considering tumor/adipose tissue interfaces. We discuss two different phase-retrieval approaches, showing that a remarkable CNR increase (from 0.5 to 3.6) can be obtained without a significant loss in spatial resolution. It is shown that, even if the non-phase-retrieved image has a poorer CNR, it is useful for evaluating the spiculation of a microcalcification: in this context, absorption and phase-retrieved images have to be regarded as complementary information. Furthermore, the first full volume acquisition of a mastectomy, with a 9 cm diameter and 3 cm height, is reported. This investigation on surgical specimens indicates that monochromatic BCT with synchrotron radiation in terms of CNR, spatial resolution, scan duration and scan volume is feasible.

Purpose Purpose of this work is to compare image quality of Synthetic Mammography (SM) and Full Field Digital Mammography (FFDM) in four different Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) systems by using a semi-anthropomorphic phantom. Methods Four DBT systems (FujiFilm, GE, Hologic, IMS) were characterized by means of the semi-anthropomorphic CIRS-BR3D phantom. The phantom contains clusters of microcalcifications, fibers and masses embedded in a breast equivalent tissue having a heterogeneous background. For each DBT system two images (DBT and FFDM) were acquired applying clinical setup conditions. FFDM acquisitions were repeated in manual mode for each system with a fixed exposure ratio between DBT and FFDM. Comparative analyses were carried out on the contrasts and sizes of micro calcifications, on the contrasts and shapes of masses, and on the noise power spectrum of the background. The FFDM image acquired in clinical setup conditions was considered the gold standard of the metric. Results Considering the micro calcifications, contrasts were generally preserved by SM with respect to FFDM, while the sizes of the smaller details slightly increased, probably due to the blurring caused by the filtration stages of the tomographic reconstruction. Regarding the masses, no globally significant differences were noticeable in the contrasts, and the shapes were generally well preserved as well. Finally, concerning the noise power spectra, significant variations only appeared in the high frequency regime, in accordance with the above-mentioned blurring. Conclusions This preliminary analysis confirms for all systems the criticality of the synthetic image in terms of spatial resolution and noise but does not highlight significant differences in the detection capability of the details of interest. Further investigations will be made considering the DBT+SM combination compared to DBT+FFDM, as well as by extending the present analysis to other mammographic phantoms.

Purpose We propose a technique for the characterization of tissues, based on a hybrid phase contrast-attenuation imaging. The technique, first introduced in [1] , makes use of a method for material basis decomposition proposed by Alvarez and Macovski [2] . We present a semi-analytical simulation of the imaging process, as well as a preliminary implementation on a set of radiographic images of a dedicated phantom. Methods The phantom consists in a thin plastic plate composed of two “soft” materials, arranged in such a way to create a faint pattern of decreasing radiographic contrasts. The imaging was performed using synchrotron radiation (i.e. a quasi-parallel, monochromatic and coherent X-ray beam) and placing the phantom at different distances from the detector, so as to enhance the contribution of phase contrast. The images were acquired at the SYRMEP beamline of the Elettra synchrotron facility (Trieste, Italy). Results The reconstructed composition of the phantom was compared to the results of the semi-analytical simulation, showing a good agreement with the theoretical expectations. In particular, the technique proved able to enhance the visibility of faint contrasts with respect to the standard attenuation-based imaging. Moreover, it provided a precise quantitative estimate of the local composition of the imaged phantom. Conclusions The application of the basis decomposition method to the context of phase contrast imaging allows an effective rendering of a broad spectrum of radiographic patterns, from low frequency textures (which are captured by the attenuation effects) to high frequency details (highlighted by the phase shift effects). In addition, thanks to the simultaneous enforcement of two separate imaging channels, it also allows a two-component reconstruction of the imaged object.

Dual-energy image subtraction represents a useful tool to improve the detectability of small lesions, especially in dense breasts. A feature it shares with all x-ray imaging techniques is the appearance of fluctuations in the texture of the background, which can obscure the visibility of interesting details. The aim of the work is to investigate the main noise sources, in order to create a better performing subtraction mechanism. In particular, the structural noise cancellation was achieved by means of a suitable extension of the dual-energy algorithm.The effect of the cancellation procedure was tested on an analytical simulation of a target with varying structural composition. Subsequently, the subtraction algorithm was also applied to a set of actual radiographs of a breast phantom exhibiting a nonuniform background pattern. The background power spectra of the outcomes were computed and compared to the ones obtained from a standard subtraction algorithm.The comparison between the standard and the proposed cancellations showed an overall suppression of the magnitudes of the spectra, as well as a flattening of the frequency dependence of the structural component of the noise.The proposed subtraction procedure provides an effective cancellation of the residual background fluctuations. When combined with the polychromatic correction already described in a companion publication, it results in a high performing dual-energy subtraction scheme for commercial mammography units.

Glass patterns (GPs) consist of randomly distributed dot pairs (dipoles) whose orientations are determined by specific geometric transforms. We assessed whether adaptation to stationary oriented translational GPs suppresses the activity of orientation selective detectors producing a tilt aftereffect (TAE). The results showed that adaptation to GPs produces a TAE similar to that reported in previous studies, though reduced in amplitude. This suggests the involvement of orientation selective mechanisms. We also measured the interocular transfer (IOT) of the GP-induced TAE and found an almost complete IOT, indicating the involvement of orientation selective and binocularly driven units. In additional experiments, we assessed the role of attention in TAE from GPs. The results showed that distraction during adaptation similarly modulates the TAE after adapting to both GPs and gratings. Moreover, in the case of GPs, distraction is likely to interfere with the adaptation process rather than with the spatial summation of local dipoles. We conclude that TAE from GPs possibly relies on visual processing levels in which the global orientation of GPs has been encoded by neurons that are mostly binocularly driven, orientation selective and whose adaptation-related neural activity is strongly modulated by attention.

Advanced applications of digital mammography such as dual-energy and tomosynthesis require multiple exposures and thus deliver higher dose compared to standard mammograms. A straightforward manner to reduce patient dose without affecting image quality would be removal of the anti-scatter grid, provided that the involved reconstruction algorithms are able to take the scatter figure into account [1] . Monte Carlo simulations are very well suited for the calculation of X-ray scatter distribution and can be used to integrate such information within the reconstruction software. Geant4 is an open source C++ particle tracking code widely used in several physical fields, including medical physics [2] , [3] . However, the coherent scattering cross section used by the standard Geant4 code does not take into account the influence of molecular interference. According to the independent atomic scattering approximation (the so-called free-atom model), coherent radiation is indistinguishable from primary radiation because its angular distribution is peaked in the forward direction. Since interference effects occur between x-rays scattered by neighbouring atoms in matter, it was shown experimentally that the scatter distribution is affected by the molecular structure of the target, even in amorphous materials. The most important consequence is that the coherent scatter distribution is not peaked in the forward direction, and the position of the maximum is strongly material-dependent [4] . In this contribution, we present the implementation of a method to take into account inter-atomic interference in small-angle coherent scattering in Geant4, including a dedicated data set of suitable molecular form factor values for several materials of clinical interest. Furthermore, we present scatter images of simple geometric phantoms in which the Rayleigh contribution is rigorously evaluated.

Purpose Breast Computed Tomography (CT) is a dedicated 3D imaging modality that provides a complete volumetric reconstruction of the uncompressed organ, thus matching a high image quality with an acceptable delivered dose. The SYRMA-3D collaboration is developing the first clinical trial of phase-contrast breast CT with synchrotron radiation at the Elettra synchrotron facility in Trieste. We present a proposal for a Quality Control (QC) protocol, including a custom made QC phantom that was designed and built by the laboratories of the University of Ferrara. Methods The synchrotron beam is monochromatic in the energy range 8.5–40 keV. The images were acquired with a photon counting detector placed at about 2 m from the organ, so as to generate a phase contrast signal. The QC phantom consists of a water filled PMMA cylinder, hung from the patient support through the breast aperture. It contains several inserts that allow measurements of geometric alignment, reconstruction uniformity and linearity, low and high contrast resolution. Results CT images of the phantom were acquired at several beam energies within the range of interest, to explore the energy dependence of the results. Uniformity and linearity appeared to be preserved by the reconstruction for all energies. Conversely, low contrast details exhibited a more pronounced dependence on the energy choice. Finally, the visibility of high contrast details was always found above acceptance levels. Conclusions The main goal of the study was to verify the compatibility of the QC phantom with the experimental environment of the SYRMA-3D project, and to test the validity and feasibility of the proposed QC protocol. With minimal modifications, they proved viable instruments to perform the necessary quality assessments for the innovative diagnostic device developed by the SYRMA-3D collaboration.

Purpose We introduce a novel algorithm for dual energy (DE) subtraction proposed in [1] , [2] , based on an iterative procedure for taking into account the intrinsic polychromaticity of conventional X-ray tubes. The result is an improvement of background cancellation with respect to the currently available DE systems. The algorithm was applied to a set of DE radiographs of a dedicated anthropomorphic phantom embedding small agglomerates of contrast medium (iodine), acquired with a commercial mammography system. Methods The employed anthropomorphic phantom, specifically designed for DE applications, is a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) box of parallelepipedal shape. It contains a large number of PMMA spheres of different diameters, embedded in paraffin wax. Moreover, it embeds a system of cavities that can be filled with iodine solutions of various concentrations. The phantom was imaged with X-ray beams of low energy (29 ± 2 kV) and high energy (47 ± 2 kV), generated by a commercial mammography unit with a tungsten anode and additional filtrations of rhodium (low energy) and copper (high energy). Results We achieved an almost complete cancellation of the background texture, resulting in an enhanced visibility of the iodine details. Such result was achieved with lower exposures than the values typical of diagnostic practice. We noticed no significant dependence of the image quality on the particular choice of beam energies. Conclusions The implementation of the novel subtraction algorithm on a commercial unit allowed an effective background cancellation with a reduced amount of delivered dose. Such result was largely independent of the imaging parameters, which is an indication of robustness of the algorithm. In conclusion, the proposed algorithm paves the way to an improvement of the diagnostic effectiveness of DE imaging.

The quality of a radiography system is affected by several factors, a major one being the focal spot size of the x-ray tube. In fact, the measurement of such size is recognized to be of primary importance during acceptance tests and image quality evaluations of clinical radiography systems. The most common device providing an image of the focal spot emission distribution is a pin-hole camera, which requires a high tube loading in order to produce a measurable signal. This work introduces an alternative technique to obtain an image of the focal spot, through the processing of a single radiograph of a simple test object, acquired with a suitable magnification.The radiograph of a magnified sharp edge is a well-established method to evaluate the extension of the focal spot profile along the direction perpendicular to the edge. From a single radiograph of a circular x-ray absorber, it is possible to extract simultaneously the radial profiles of several sharp edges with different orientations. The authors propose a technique that allows to obtain an image of the focal spot through the processing of these radial profiles by means of a pseudo-CT reconstruction technique. In order to validate this technique, the reconstruction has been applied to the simulated radiographs of an ideal disk-shaped absorber, generated by various simulated focal spot distributions. Furthermore, the method has been applied to the focal spot of a commercially available mammography unit.In the case of simulated radiographs, the results of the reconstructions have been compared to the original distributions, showing an excellent agreement for what regards both the overall distribution and the full width at half maximum measurements. In the case of the experimental test, the method allowed to obtain images of the focal spot that have been compared with the results obtained through standard techniques, namely, pin-hole camera and slit camera.The method was proven to be effective for simulated images and the results of the experimental test suggest that it could be considered as an alternative technique for focal spot distribution evaluation. The method offers the possibility to measure the actual focal spot size and emission distribution at the same exposure conditions as clinical routine, avoiding high tube loading as in the case of the pin-hole imaging technique.

Purpose: Contrast-enhanced digital mammography is an image subtraction technique that is able to improve the detectability of lesions in dense breasts. One of the main sources of error, when the technique is performed by means of commercial mammography devices, is represented by the intrinsic polychromaticity of the x-ray beams. The aim of the work is to propose an iterative procedure, which only assumes the knowledge of a small set of universal quantities, to take into account the polychromaticity and correct the subtraction results accordingly. Methods: In order to verify the procedure, it has been applied to an analytical simulation of a target containing a contrast medium and to actual radiographs of a breast phantom containing cavities filled with a solution of the same medium. Results: The reconstructed densities of contrast medium were compared, showing very good agreement between the theoretical predictions and the experimental results already after the first iteration. Furthermore, the convergence of the iterative procedure was studied, showing that only a small number of iterations is necessary to reach limiting values. Conclusions: The proposed procedure represents an efficient solution to the polychromaticity issue, qualifying therefore as a viable alternative to inverse-map functions.

The Adelson-Bergen motion energy sensor is well established as the leading model of low-level visual motion sensing in human vision. However, the standard model cannot predict adaptation effects in motion perception. A previous paper Pavan et al.(Journal of Vision 10:1---17, 2013) presented an extension to the model which uses a first-order RC gain-control circuit (leaky integrator) to implement adaptation effects which can span many seconds, and showed that the extended model's output is consistent with psychophysical data on the classic motion after-effect. Recent psychophysical research has reported adaptation over much shorter time periods, spanning just a few hundred milliseconds. The present paper further extends the sensor model to implement rapid adaptation, by adding a second-order RC circuit which causes the sensor to require a finite amount of time to react to a sudden change in stimulation. The output of the new sensor accounts accurately for psychophysical data on rapid forms of facilitation (rapid visual motion priming, rVMP) and suppression (rapid motion after-effect, rMAE). Changes in natural scene content occur over multiple time scales, and multi-stage leaky integrators of the kind proposed here offer a computational scheme for modelling adaptation over multiple time scales.

The functional renormalization group equation for projectable Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz gravity is used to derive the non-perturbative beta functions for the Newton's constant, cosmological constant and anisotropy parameter. The resulting coupled differential equations are studied in detail and exemplary RG trajectories are constructed numerically. The beta functions possess a non-Gaussian fixed point and a one-parameter family of Gaussian fixed points. One of the Gaussian fixed points corresponds to the Einstein-Hilbert action with vanishing cosmological constant and constitutes a saddle point with one IR-attractive direction. For RG trajectories dragged into this fixed point at low energies diffeomorphism invariance is restored. The emergence of general relativity from Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz gravity can thus be understood as a crossover-phenomenon where the IR behavior of the theory is controlled by this Gaussian fixed point. In particular RG trajectories with a tiny positive cosmological constant also come with an anisotropy parameter which is compatible with experimental constraints, providing a mechanism for the approximate restoration of diffeomorphism invariance in the IR. The non-Gaussian fixed point is UV-attractive in all three coupling constants. Most likely, this fixed point is the imprint of Asymptotic Safety at the level of Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz gravity., Comment: 32 pages, 6 figures

The Renormalisation Goup improvement of early times cosmology is presented. The result is a phase of inflationary evolution that naturally flows into standard cosmology at late times. The corresponding spectra of cosmological perturbations are calculated, and the bottom line is a set of constraints on the form of a viable theory of Quantum Gravity.

We discuss the existence of inflationary solutions in a class of renormalization group improved polynomial f(R) theories, which have been studied recently in the context of the asymptotic safety scenario for quantum gravity. These theories seem to possess a nontrivial ultraviolet fixed point, where the dimensionful couplings scale according to their canonical dimensionality. Assuming that the cutoff is proportional to the Hubble parameter, we obtain modified Friedmann equations which admit both power law and exponential solutions.
