Past human population dynamics play a key role in integrated models of understanding socio-ecological change over time. However, little analysis on this issue has been carried out for the prehistoric societies in the Lower Danube and Eastern Balkans area. Here, we use summed probability distributions of radiocarbon dates to investigate potential regional and local variation population dynamics. Our study adopts a formal model-testing approach to the fifth millennium BC archaeological radiocarbon record, performing a region-wide, comparative analysis of the demographic trajectories of the area along lower Danube River. We follow the current framework of theoretical models of population growth and perform global and regional significance and spatial permutation tests on the data. Specifically, we investigate whether populations on both sides of the Danube follow a logistic pattern of steady growth, followed by a major decline over time. Finally, our analysis of local-scale growth investigates whether considerable heterogeneity or homogeneity within the region may be observed over the time span considered here. The results show both similarities and differences in the population trends across the area. Our findings are showcased in relation to the cultural characteristics of the region’s 5th millennium BC societies, and future research directions are also suggested.

We investigated the controversial origin of domestic sheep (Ovis aries) using large samples of contemporary and ancient domestic individuals and their closest wild relatives: the Asiatic mouflon (Ovis gmelini), the urial (Ovis vignei) and the argali (Ovis ammon). A phylogeny based on mitochondrial DNA, including 213 new cytochrome-b sequences of wild Ovism confirmed that O. gmelini is the maternal ancestor of sheep and precluded mtDNA contributions from O. vignei (and O. gmelini × O. vignei hybrids) to domestic lineages. We also produced 54 new control region sequences showing shared haplogroups (A, B, C and E) between domestic sheep and wild O. gmelini which localized the domestication center in eastern Anatolia and central Zagros, excluding regions further east where exclusively wild haplogroups were found. This overlaps with the geographic distribution of O. gmelini gmelini, further suggesting that the maternal origin of domestic sheep derives from this subspecies. Additionally, we produced 57 new CR sequences of Neolithic sheep remains from a large area covering Anatolia to Europe, showing the early presence of at least three mitochondrial haplogroups (A, B and D) in Western colonization routes. This confirmed that sheep domestication was a large-scale process that captured diverse maternal lineages (haplogroups).

Zusammenfassung In Desa sind in den Bereichen Castravița und Lunculița zwei Latène-Nekropolen gefunden worden. Die Nekropole in Desa-Castravița ist die erste Nekropole der Mittel- und Spätlatène-Zeit in der Region des Eisernen Tores, für die menschliche und tierische Überreste paläoanthropologisch und archäozoologisch analysiert worden sind. Menschliche Überreste konnten in sechs Gräbern in kleinen Mengen gefunden werden; sie sind stark fragmentiert und deformiert. Die Bestatteten wurden bei unterschiedlichen Temperaturen, zwischen 600–900º C, in einem sauerstoffreichen Milieu verbrannt. Nicht alle Knochen sind dem Scheiterhaufen entnommen worden. Es gibt keine Auswahl bestimmter Körperteile. Eine Sica wurde bei einer Temperatur von 570–900° C verbrannt und dabei entstand eine Magnetitschicht, deren Konservierung das Dekor erkennen lässt. Die Bestatteten waren adulte, männliche Individuen oder Individuen unbestimmten Geschlechtes; nur der Bestattete aus Grab 6 ist ein Jüngling. Die archäozoologische Analyse der Tierknochenreste dreier Gräber ergab, dass sie entweder bei einer niedrigen Temperatur verbrannt oder unverbrannt beigegegen worden sind. Nur die drei am häufigsten belegten Haustiere dieser Zeit konnten bestimmt werden: Rind, Schaf/Ziege und Schwein (durch Kieferknochen). Die Nekropole in Desa-Castravița wurde in der Mittellatènezeit C1 angelegt und existierte bis in die Spätlatène D1-Stufe weiter; später, wahrscheinlich kurz nach der Mitte des 1. Jhs. n. Chr., wurde dort eine Befestigungsanlage errichtet. Das unvollständing ausgegrabene Gräberfeld besteht aus elf Gräbern (Brandschüttungsgräber und sogenannte Kenotaphe), die zwei sich parallel entwickelnde Gruppen bilden. Die Nekropole im Bereich Lunculiţa wurde zufällig entdeckt, geborgen wurden ausschließlich Metallgegenstände zweier Gräber der Spätlatènezeit. Der archäologische Katalog beschreibt die Befundlage und die Grabbeigaben der elf Gräber aus Desa-Castravița und der zwei aus Lunculița. Die Auswertung der Castravița-Nekropole, die teilweise der aus Karaburma ähnelt, wird in einer späteren Ausgabe dieser Zeitschrift erfolgen.

Lucrările de implementare a proiectului BRUA au impus și realizarea evaluării arheologice a traseului magistralei pentru gaze naturale și, apoi, implicit, în funcție de situații, a cercetărilor arheologice preventive. În cele ce urmează, ne vom opri asupra unor rezultate punctuale din zona de traseu BRUA din centrul județului Giurgiu – Mirău (com. Stoenești). Stratigrafia sitului este predominant naturală. Toate intervențiile stratigrafice (un foarte probabil sondaj de diagnostic – Cx2, două gropi medievale – Cx1 și Cx3, precum și o serie de stâlpi de lemn pe care îi atribuim unor împrejmuiri din anii 70-80 ai sec. al XX-lea) afectează un nivel de sol antic și sunt, stratigrafic, acoperite de nivelul celui actual, arat. Ceramica și resturile arheozoologice sunt singurele materiale descoperite și recuperate. Provin exclusiv din cuprinsul celor două complexe medievale. Chiar dacă inventarul Cx3 este mai slab cantitativ, caracteristicile ambelor categorii sunt unitare, dovedind atât o contemporaneitate, cât și manifestări și comportamente identice. În cadrul ansamblului ceramic al Cx1 au fost identificate și definite cinci categorii de pastă; materialul este parțial întregibil. Materialul ceramic descoperit în Cx3 este foarte fragmentar și în totalitate neîntregibil. Au fost identificate numai două categorii principale de pastă (P1 și P2, prezente și în cadrul ceramicii provenite din Cx1), cu variante nesemnificative. Datăm cele două complexe undeva în sec. al XVI-lea. Datarea materialului ceramic concordă cu prima atestare documentară a Mirăului. Chiar dacă cele două gropi au fost săpate pentru utilizarea sedimentelor – ea însăși o activitate nefirească, extragerea lutului fiind mai facilă din marginea terasei –, ele au fost folosite ulterior pentru redepozitare de deșeuri (?), inclusiv de resturi a numeroase focuri domestice. În cadrul economiei animaliere de la Mirău se creșteau o serie de animale domestice, printre acestea bovinele sunt predominate, ele fiind urmate de către ovicaprine și porcine care își dispută locul doi. Bovinele erau exploatate de o manieră mixtă (carne și lapte), dar nu trebuie omisă nici contribuția acestora la tracțiune (ca forță de muncă), în timp ce ovicaprinele erau crescute pentru produsele lor secundare (lapte și lână). Remarcăm consumul alimentar al calului (hipofagia) care probabil era ocazional. Acest fenomen este întâlnit de o manieră izolată în evul mediu românesc în ciuda interdicțiilor religioase. În cazul de față, ne putem gândi fie la un moment de criză alimentară, fie la valorificarea în alimentație a animalelor bătrâne/accidentate. Rezultatele acestui studiu includ utilizarea în alimentație și a peștilor (știuca, plătica, crapul, șalăul și somnul) și a păsărilor domestice (găina și gâsca). O serie de fragmente ceramice, ținând cont de caracteristicile fabric-ului, sunt preistorice – cel mai probabil, gumelnițene. Firește, sunt elemente intruzive în complexul respectiv. Informațiile de natură stratigrafică sunt pe deplin completate de cele arheozoologice. Lăsând deoparte rațiunile pentru care au fost săpate cele două gropi – estimăm că momentul principal de umplere antropică, plasat cronologic la scurt timp după excavare, s-a petrecut în sezonul cald, pentru ca, momentul principal de umplere naturală să aparțină sezonului rece. Revenirea antropică sesizată în cazul Cx1 se va fi petrecut la sfârșitul acestui sezon rece sau la debutul sezonului cald următor, dar nu are absolut niciuna din caracteristicile anterioare. Din păcate, cunoaștem foarte puțin despre locuirile rurale medievale din Țara Românească, cu elemente decelate pentru a putea fi comparate.

Rescue archaeological excavations at Sisești Street, nos. 147– 175 led to the identification and investigation of 29 archaeological features dated to the Bronze Age, the 9th and the 18th centuries. The paper discusses in detail the results of the research (archaeological materials and features) from an interdisciplinary perspective. Aim: The Expansion-Contraction model has been used to explain the responses of species to climatic changes. During periods of unfavourable climatic conditions, species retreat to refugia from where they may later expand. This paper focuses on the palaeoecology of red deer over the past 54 ka across Europe and the Urals, to reveal patterns of change in their range and explore the role of environmental conditions in determining their distribution. Location: Europe and western Asia to 63°E. Taxon: Red deer (Cervus elaphus). Methods: We collected 984 records of radiocarbon-dated red deer subfossils from the Late Pleistocene and the Holocene, including 93 original dates. For each deer sample we compiled climatic and biome type data for the corresponding time intervals. Results: During the last 54 ka changes in red deer range in Europe and the Urals were asynchronous and differed between western and eastern Europe and western Asia due to different environmental conditions in those regions. The range of suitable areas for deer during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) was larger than previously thought and covered vast regions not only in southern but also in western and eastern Europe. Throughout the period investigated the majority of specimens inhabited forests in the temperate climatic zone. The contribution of forests in deer localities significantly decreased during the last 4 ka, due to deforestation of Europe caused by humans. Mean January temperature was the main limiting factor for species distribution. Over 90% of the samples were found in areas where mean January temperature was above −10°C. Main conclusions: Red deer response to climatic oscillations are in agreement with the Expansion-Contraction model but in contradiction to the statement of only the southernmost LGM refugia of the species. The present phylogeographic pattern of red deer in Eurasia is not only a result of the contraction of their distribution range into glacial refugia and postglacial expansion, but probably also an effect of replacement of some red deer s.l. mtDNA lineages by others during the last 50 000 years. To better recognize this process, we analysed 501 sequences of mtDNA cytochrome b, including 194 ancient and 75 contemporary samples newly obtained for this study. The inclusion of 161 radiocarbon-dated samples enabled us to study the phylogeny in a temporal context and conduct divergence-time estimation and molecular dating. Depending on methodology, our estimate of divergence between Cervus elaphus and Cervus canadensis varied considerably (370 000 or 1.37 million years BP, respectively). The divergence times of genetic lineages and haplogroups corresponded to large environmental changes associated with stadials and interstadials of the Late Pleistocene. Due to the climatic oscillations, the distribution of C. elaphus and C. canadensis fluctuated in north–south and east–west directions. Some haplotypes dated to pre-Last Glacial Maximum periods were not detected afterwards, representing possibly extinct populations. We indicated with a high probability the presence of red deer sensu lato in south-eastern Europe and western Asia during the Last Glacial Maximum.

The archaeozoological material discussed in this article came from one feature (Cpl. 2) located in the southern outer courtyard of the fortress investigated in the summer of 2020. The collected artefacts date mainly to the 18th and 19th centuries, therefore to the Austrian era, although some of them had been in use even earlier during the 17th century. The feature, most likely with the initial phase in the middle of the 17th century, has functioned as a latrine pit in which all sorts of remains were gradually thrown away, including faunal ones. Given that the faunal material analysed comes from a single archaeological feature, the conclusions are quite limited. Conclusions cannot be generalized, but they show a trend probably close to reality. We would like to make this clear because during the older or newer archaeological investigations, in various areas of the Făgăraș fortress, numerous animal bones were discovered, with or without a clear dating context, which could not be collected or analysed. The fauna studied in this article offers a glimpse on the diet of the human community that served the Făgăraș fortress, in general, during the Habsburg period. We observed that cattle hold an overwhelming ratio NR-wise, dominating the faunal spectrum. MNI-wise, although cattle hold second place after ovicaprids, they still have the highest importance in terms of the meat ratio, compared to other domestic animals. The game has an extremely low ratio, with medium-sized species (roe deer) and small species (hare) identified. The study of the slaughter ages and the distribution of the anatomical elements/ skeletal parts in the case of the domestic animals suggest the consumption of subadult and adult animals with less tender meat, some of the animals being at the age of reform (especially the old ones) suggesting that they were part of the daily food of the fortress staff (soldiers, civilians and administration). Although not very large in terms of quantity, the importance of the sample from the Făgăraș fortress is also given by the fact that such studies of archaeozoology dedicated to the Habsburg period are extremely rare in Romania. Future archaeozoological research will certainly help us to better understand the diet of the population in the Habsburg era., Materialul arheozoologic care constituie obiectul studiului de faţă provine dintr-un complex (Cpl. 2) aflat în curtea exterioară sudică a cetăţii şi a fost cercetat în vara anului 2020. Artefactele recoltate se datează cu precădere în secolele XVIII– XIX, aşadar în epoca austriacă, cu precizarea că unele dintre acestea sunt utilizate şi mai timpuriu, pe parcursul secolului al XVII-lea. Complexul, cel mai probabil în faza iniţială începând cu mijlocul veacului al XVII-lea, a funcţionat ca groapă de latrină, în care treptat au fost aruncate tot felul de resturi, inclusiv faunistice. Având în vedere că materialul faunistic analizat provine dintr-un singur complex arheologic, concluziile sunt destul de limitate. Datele nu pot fi generalizate, dar arată o tendință care probabil nu era departe de realitate. Facem această precizare deoarece în timpul cercetărilor arheologice mai vechi sau mai noi, în diverse puncte de pe cuprinsul Cetății Făgărașului au fost descoperite numeroase oase de animale, cu sau fără un context de datare clar, care nu au putut fi însă recoltate sau analizate. Fauna studiată în cadrul acestui articol sugerează dieta comunității umane care a deservit Cetatea Făgărașului în linii mari în perioada habsburgică. Observăm că bovinele au o pondere covârșitoare ca NR, ele predominând spectrul faunistic. Ca NMI, cu toate că bovinele se situează pe locul doi după ovicaprine, totuși ca pondere carnată, ele au cea mai mare importanță în comparație cu celelalte animale domestice. Vânatul are o pondere extrem de redusă identificându-se specii de talie medie (căpriorul) și mică (iepurele de câmp). Studiul vârstelor de sacrificare și distribuția pe elemente anatomice/ părți de schelet în cazul animalelor domestice sugerează consumul unor animale de vârstă subadultă și adultă care aveau o carne mai puțin fragedă, unele din animale fiind chiar la vârsta „ reformei” (mai ales cele bătrâne) ceea ce ar sugera că acestea făceau parte din hrana cotidiană a personalului cetății (soldați, civili, administrație). Deşi nu foarte mare din punct de vedere cantitativ, importanța eșantionului de la Cetatea Făgărașului este dată și de faptul că astfel de studii de arheozoologie, pentru perioada habsburgică, sunt extrem de rare pentru România. Human skeletal remains of at least three individuals were unearthed during excavations at the Early Neolithic site of Grumăzeşti – Deleni in northeast Romania (Moldova region) between 1968 and 1978. They comprise the articulated skeleton of an adult buried in a crouched position (M1), and the disarticulated remains of another adult and a juvenile found together in another part of the site and interpreted by the principal excavator, S. Marinescu-Bîlcu, as a disturbed burial (referred to here as M2/ 1– 2). The human remains are described and analysed in terms of state of preservation, age-at-death, sex, stature and pathology. Results of radiocarbon dating and carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analysis of bone collagen from M1 and radiocarbon dates on herbivore bones from the site are presented and discussed., Cercetările arheologice din situl de la Grumăzeşti – Deleni din nordul României, realizate între 1968 și 1978, au pus în evidența existența unor resturi osteologice umane de la cel puțin trei indivizi. Primul dintre aceștia, M1, era reprezentat de un schelet în conexiune anatomică, descoperit în poziția chircit pe partea stângă. Resturile fragmentare atribuite altor doi indivizi (denumite în acest articol M2/ 1– 2, un adult și un juvenil) provin dintr-un context diferit, fiind interpretate de autorul cercetării arheologice, S. Marinescu-Bîlcu drept un mormânt deranjat de o amenajare ulterioară. Lucrarea de față face o analiză descriptivă a stării de conservare a resturilor osteologice, determinarea vârstei, sexului și staturii, precum și a patologiilor identificate pe resturile osteologice prezente. Domestication of horses fundamentally transformed long-range mobility and warfare. However, modern domesticated breeds do not descend from the earliest domestic horse lineage associated with archaeological evidence of bridling, milking and corralling at Botai, Central Asia around 3500 bc3. Other longstanding candidate regions for horse domestication, such as Iberia and Anatolia, have also recently been challenged. Thus, the genetic, geographic and temporal origins of modern domestic horses have remained unknown. Here we pinpoint the Western Eurasian steppes, especially the lower Volga-Don region, as the homeland of modern domestic horses. Furthermore, we map the population changes accompanying domestication from 273 ancient horse genomes. This reveals that modern domestic horses ultimately replaced almost all other local populations as they expanded rapidly across Eurasia from about 2000 bc, synchronously with equestrian material culture, including Sintashta spoke-wheeled chariots. We find that equestrianism involved strong selection for critical locomotor and behavioural adaptations at the GSDMC and ZFPM1 genes. Our results reject the commonly held association between horseback riding and the massive expansion of Yamnaya steppe pastoralists into Europe around 3000 bc driving the spread of Indo-European languages. This contrasts with the scenario in Asia where Indo-Iranian languages, chariots and horses spread together, following the early second millennium bc Sintashta culture., The work by G. The house mouse (Mus musculus) represents the extreme of globalization of invasive mammals. However, the timing and basis of its origin and early phases of dispersal remain poorly documented. To track its synanthropisation and subsequent invasive spread during the develoment of complex human societies, we analyzed 829 Mus specimens from 43 archaeological contexts in Southwestern Asia and Southeastern Europe, between 40,000 and 3,000 cal. BP, combining geometric morphometrics numerical taxonomy, ancient mitochondrial DNA and direct radiocarbon dating. We found that large late hunter-gatherer sedentary settlements in the Levant, c. 14,500 cal. BP, promoted the commensal behaviour of the house mouse, which probably led the commensal pathway to cat domestication. House mouse invasive spread was then fostered through the emergence of agriculture throughout the Near East 12,000 years ago. Stowaway transport of house mice to Cyprus can be inferred as early as 10,800 years ago. However, the house mouse invasion of Europe did not happen until the development of proto urbanism and exchange networks — 6,500 years ago in Eastern Europe and 4000 years ago in Southern Europe — which in turn may have driven the first human mediated dispersal of cats in Europe.

International audience; Entre 1952 et 1961, Dumitru Berciu réalise de nombreuses recherches de terrain dans la zone littorale du lac Golovița, sur la zone des communes actuelles de Baia et de Ceamurlia de Jos (département de Tulcea). Il publiera en 1966 une partie des fouilles conduites sur les habitats de Baia-Golovița et Ceamurlia de Jos. Dans le même intervalle de temps, Dumitru Berciu va réaliser des fouilles dans le village même de Baia, sur le tell de „Boruz”. En 2019, dans le cadre d’un projet de l’Académie Roumaine, un collectif Franco-Roumain a engagé la revisite des collections et des archives conservées à l’Institut d’archéologie „Vasile Pârvan“. Ce travail, encore en cours, permet de jeter un exposant nouveau regard sur le peuplement de la zone littorale de l’actuel lac Golovița entre le 6e millénaire et le 5e millénaires avant notre ère. L’analyse des archives et des prospections de terrain nous ont permis de localiser avec précisions les trois sites, et notamment le tell de „Boruz”, pour lequel nous ne disposons d’aucune archive écrite, mais seulement des ensembles mobiliers conservés à Bucarest. L’objet de cet article est de présenter un bilan d’étape, et, au vu des premières datations radiocarbone obtenues, d’évaluer les hypothèses émises par Dumitru Berciu quant à l’antériorité de l’établissement de Baia-Golovița sur celui de Ceamurlia de Jos. Un autre enjeu est de proposer une relecture, malgré l’absence d’archives, de la stratigraphie du tell Chalcolithique Gumelnița de „Boruz”.

The archaeozoological study carried out in Satu Nou – Valea lui Voicu (Oltina, Constanța County) provides new information on the relationship between humans and dogs in the early period of the Iron Age. Thus, numerous bones from several dogs (Canis familiaris) were identified in the feature called “ ditch or gully” and in a pit (Pit 41). The authors of the research attributed this context, stratigraphically considered the oldest, to the Babadag culture (10th– 9th centuries BC). The studied group includes the complete and partial skeletons of 14 individuals (12 identified in the ditch and two in Pit 41), unearthed in the 1991– 1992 seasons. Some dogs (at least four individuals) were slaughtered by blows to the skull and / or were eaten (at least five individuals) as evidenced by the disarticulation and defleshing cut marks identified on the bones. Given the special archaeological situation at Satu Nou, the phenomenon of cynophagy must be viewed in a ritual and funerary context. Of the 14 dogs, two are certainly males, two are possibly males and four are possibly females. The animals were predominantly slaughtered at a young age : nine are subadults (between 8 and 18 months) and five are adults. The average withers height of these animals is 50.2 cm (n = 5 ; limits 46– 55.6 cm) after Koudelka and 51 cm (n = 5 ; limits 47.4– 56.8 cm) after Harcourt ; the gracility index average is 7.4 (n = 5 ; limits 6.6– 8.3). These figures describe medium-sized and above-average dogs of medium robustness. It is very interesting that nine of these individuals have extremely varied pathologies affecting various anatomical parts, from the skull to the phalanges. Most of these pathologies healed in the individuals’ lifetime, but they illustrate that these animals have gone through various accidents or traumas, some of them at relatively young ages. In general, the dog had a wide range of attributes : psychopomp creature, companion of the warrior and hunter, and also guardian of the home, with a therapeutic and purifying role. In our case the dog was sacrificed (sometimes violently), deposed as an offering and sometimes probably ritually consumed. It should not be omitted that in the same ditch from Valea lui Voicu were identified human bones (from 26 individuals), pottery, but also numerous animals remains that could have been part of the funerary banquets that probably took place in this area. The association of all these archaeological, anthropological and archaeozoological materials may suggest the existence of dog sacrifices at the funerals of the deceased (as their companions) and the deposition of a part of the animal near the body, while the rest of the animal was consumed during the funerary ceremony., Studiul arheozoologic realizat pentru situl de la Satu Nou – Valea lui Voicu (com. Oltina, jud. Constanța) ne aduce noi informații cu privire la relația dintre oameni și câini în perioada timpurie a epocii fierului. Astfel, în complexul denumit „ șanț sau viroagă” și într-o groapă (Gr. 41), au fost identificate numeroase oase provenite de la mai mulți câini (Canis familiaris). Acest context, considerat din punct de vedere stratigrafic și cel mai vechi, a fost atribuit de autorii cercetării, culturii Babadag (sec. X– IX a. Chr.). Lotul studiat cuprinde osemintele, mai mult sau mai puțin complete, a 14 indivizi (12 identificați în șanț și doi în Gr. 41), descoperite în campaniile 1991– 1992. Studiul acestora ne arată că unii câini au fost sacrificați prin lovituri la nivelul craniului (cel puțin patru indivizi) și/ sau au fost consumați alimentar (cel puțin cinci indivizi) dovadă fiind identificarea de urme antropice de descărnare și dezarticulare. Acest fenomen al cynofagiei trebuie privit într-un context ritual și funerar dacă avem în vedere situația arheologică mai specială de la Satu Nou. Din cele 14 depuneri de câini, două provin cu siguranță de la doi masculi, doi este posibil să fie masculi și patru este posibil să fie femele. Vârstele de sacrificare ale acestor câini ne arată că nouă indivizi sunt subadulți (între 8 și 18 luni) și cinci sunt adulți, deci observăm o predominare a animalelor tinere. Talia acestor animale prezintă o valoare medie de 50,2 cm (n = 5 ; limite 46– 55,6 cm) după Koudelka și de 51 cm (n = 5 ; limite 47,4– 56,8 cm) după Harcourt, iar indicele de gracilitate are o medie de 7,4 (n = 5 ; limite 6,6-8,3). Aceste cifre sugerează câini de talie medie și supramedie cu o robustețe mijlocie. Ceea ce este extrem de interesant este faptul că nouă dintre acești indivizi prezintă patologii extrem de variate care ating diferite elemente anatomice de la craniu până la falange. Majoritatea acestor patologii sunt vindecate în cursul vieții indivizilor, dar ele ne ilustrează că aceste animale sufereau diferite lovituri sau accidente, unele dintre animale fiind relativ tinere. În general, câinele are o serie de atribute psihopompe, fiind considerat un însoțitor al războinicului și vânătorului, dar în același timp era și un paznic al căminului și avea și un rol terapeutic și de purificare. În cazul nostru câinele era sacrificat (uneori violent), depus ca ofrandă și uneori probabil consumat ritualic. Nu trebuie să omitem faptul că în același șanț de la Valea lui Voicu s-au mai identificat oase umane (de la 26 de indivizi), ceramică, dar și numeroase resturi de animale care este posibil să fi făcut parte din banchetele funerare care probabil aveau loc în această zonă. RESUMEN: Este trabajo se centra en la identificacion de cambios operados en el procesado de materiales oseos en el Neolitico del sudeste europeo a partir de tres tipos de produccion de manufacturas por la tecnica de desgaste que son tipicas de la region: biparticion por abrasion, segmentacion con fibra y perforacion por tecnica de erosion. El procesado de las materias oseas viene muy condicionado por sus formas anatomicas naturales, razon por la cual solo un rango restringido de variables de transformacion con cambios minimos a traves del tiempo es espera- ble. No obstante, numerosos especialistas invocan al valor cultural conferido por la comunidad como el elemento clave en la seleccion de materias primas mas que estas limitaciones aludidas sobre la forma de la materia prima. Por ello, existen algunos ejemplos en donde ha habido poco cambio a lo largo del tiempo en la seleccion de las materias primas a pesar de haber habido variabilidad en la disponibilidad de especies animales. Como resultado de esto el estudio de los tres tipos de tecnica de (manufacturado por desgaste) se torna mas interesante. Estas tecnicas no estan presentes en la region en todo momento. Algunas de ellas aparecen en material oseo trabajado en Rumania y zonas adyacentes a principios del Neolitico pero desaparecen igual de rapido (biparticion por abrasion) o solo lo hacen de forma esporadica a principios del Calcolitico (perforacion y segmentacion con fibra). Basandonos en analisis experimentales de las tres tecnicas de procesado y comparando ello con los conjuntos arqueologicos, nuestro estudio pretende incorporar todas las variables relevantes (gestos tecnologicos, tiempo requerido para cada operacion, herramientas utilizadas, etc.) y evaluar si estas representan una innovacion autentica en el modo en que fueron procesados los materiales oseos. Zooarchaeological study of the faunal remains unearthed at Radovanu during the 2016 field season from three pits (P. 1, P. 7 and P. 8), revealed the presence of dog bones displaying traces of anthropogenic disarticulation, defleshing and burning. Of the 68 dog skeletal remains, 20 exhibit such anthropogenic traces. The minimum number of individuals (MNI) represented by the 68 remains is four, all of them adults, of which two individuals produced the 20 remains with anthropogenic modifications. The average withers height of these animals is 56.5 cm based on the Koudelka index (52.9– 58.0 cm ; N = 6) or 57.4 cm based on the Harcourt index (55.7– 58.9 cm ; N = 6). Estimates of the gracility index, on average 7.09 (6.68– 7.85 ; N = 5), indicates that medium size dogs (between 50 and 60 cm) of average robustness (diaphyseal index = 6.6– 8.9) were present at Radovanu. The case of the Radovanu cynophagy is unique, today, in the Romanian zooarchaeological context. However, observations made more than 20 years ago might suggest that this phenomenon existed in the Geto‐ Dacian world if we consider only the degree of fragmentation and the burning traces observed in the case of the dog remains. Now, the cut marks found on the Radovanu dog bones provide irrefutable evidence that the species was, indeed, consumed by the Geto‐ Dacian population., Studiul arheozoologic al faunei de la Radovanu care provine din campania de cercetări arheologice din anul 2016 a evidențiat existența unor oase de câine cu urme antropice de dezarticulare, descărnare și ardere descoperite în trei gropi (Gr. 1, Gr. 7 și Gr. 8). Dintre cele 68 resturi de câine determinate specific, 20 prezintă astfel de urme antropice. Numărul minim de indivizi cărora le‐ au aparținut aceste resturi (68) este de cel puțin patru, toți adulți, iar dintre aceștia doi au fost consumați (20 de resturi prezintă stigmate antropice). Talia acestor animale are o valoare de 56,5 cm după Koudelka (N = 6, limite 52,9– 58 cm) sau de 57,4 cm după Harcourt (N = 6 ; limite 55,7– 58,9 cm). De asemenea, estimarea indicelui de gracilitate care are o valoare medie de 7,09 (N = 5 ; limite 6,68– 7,85) ne permite să concluzionăm că la Radovanu existau câini de talie medie (între 50 și 60 cm) și cu o robustețe medie (indice diafizar între 6,6– 8,9). Cazul cynofagiei de la Radovanu este unic în acest moment în peisajul arheozoologic românesc. Totuşi, observaţii formulate în urmă cu mai bine de 20 de ani ar fi putut sugera că acest fenomen exista în lumea geto‐ dacică numai dacă ne gândim la fragmentaritatea şi urmele de ardere observate în cazul oaselor de câine. This study aims to publish the results of the archaeological excavations carried out in 2012 in the Neoeneolithic site from Boldeşti-Scăieni, Seciu neighbourhood (Prahova County). The surface excavated in 2012 was small, comprised of two sections. Extensive research was performed at the site in 2009 ; the results were published in a monography and in several studies. Archaeological artefacts specific to the Starčevo-Criş culture, especially ceramics, but also an inhumation burial of a child were unearthed in 2012. Archaeozoological material was also found. An Eneolithic dwelling attributed to the Stoicani-Aldeni cultural aspect was found above the Early Neolithic habitation layer. Two radiocarbon dates were obtained from samples taken from the Neolithic layer. They are presented and analised in this paper in the broader context of the evolution of the Starčevo-Criş culture at the Lower Danube., În acest studiu ne-am propus publicarea rezultatelor cercetărilor arheologice derulate în anul 2012 în situl neoeneolitic din localitatea Boldeşti-Scăieni, cartier Seciu (jud. Prahova). În campania respectivă au fost derulate cercetări arheologice restrânse, fiind trasate două secţiuni. Săpături mai extinse au fost realizate în acest sit în anul 2009, rezultatele obţinute fiind deja valorificate atât monografic, cât şi într-o serie de studii. În anul 2012 au fost descoperite materiale arheologice specifice culturii Starčevo-Criş, în special ceramică, dar şi un mormânt de inhumaţie de subadult. De asemenea, a fost recuperat şi material faunistic. Deasupra depozitului de locuire din epoca neolitică timpurie au fost descoperite şi resturile unei locuinţe eneolitice atribuită aspectului cultural Stoicani-Aldeni. Au fost realizate şi două datări radiocarbon, probele fiind prelevate din nivelul de locuire neolitic, redate şi analizate în acest text în contextul mai larg al evoluţiei culturii Starčevo-Criş la Dunărea de Jos., Frînculeasa Alin, Preda Bianca, Bălășescu Adrian, Soficaru Andrei, Negrea Octav, Nica Tiberiu. The site of Şibot (Alba County) was investigated in 2012 and over 300 archaeological features were exposed. The excavations confirmed the presence of a medieval settlement dating to the 15th century and destroyed during the battle of Câmpul Pâinii. The present paper presents the results of the analysis of a dwelling from the medieval settlement, analysis mainly performed on pottery, stove tiles and iron items. New information has been obtained from the archaeozoological analysis and the reconstruction of the dwelling’s stove. The presented data help give a clearer general image of the site and of the daily life during the Middle Ages., În aşezarea de la Şibot (jud. Alba), cercetată în anul 2012, fiind identificate 300 de complexe arheologice, a fost confirmată prezenţa unei locuiri medievale datată în secolul al XV- lea şi distrusă în timpul bătăliei de la Câmpul Pâinii. Articolul de faţă prezintă rezultatele analizei unei locuințe din așezarea medievală, accentul fiind pus pe inventarul compus din ceramică, cahle şi obiecte de fier. Ineditul este adus de analiza materialului faunistic, precum și de reconstituirea sobei din locuință. International audience; Two perforated dog molars were found directly associated with a Kura-Araxes child burial from the third millennium BC in Armenia. Both teeth show trimming of the root ends and boring of a biconical hole through the lingual root with a hand-held stone tool. Expedient manufacture, the anatomical location of the hole and use-wear suggest that the molars were suspended in order to display their crowns as part of a necklace that also included two stone beads. This is an unusual type of personal ornament and the first of its kind reported in the South Caucasus. Its use in a Kura-Araxes burial is interpreted as an active modification of the funerary symbolism during this period.

The present paper originated in Alexandra Bolomey’s partial (and often incomplete) notes and unfinished manuscripts on the Early Neolithic faunal remains from the Cuina Turcului rock shelter. Most of the information they contained was never published, with the exception of some general data included in two papers that appeared in 1973. La faune étudiée provient des fouilles archéologiques préventives effectuées dans la place Sfântu Gheorghe (Saint George) à Timișoara (département Timiș) en 2013 (novembre et décembre) et 2014 (janvier-mars).Le matériel faunique provient de plusieurs niveaux stratigraphiques (culturels) notés du plus ancien au plus récent avec les dénominations Médiéval III (M III), Médiéval II (M II) et Médiéval I (M I) pour la période pré-ottomane (XVe et XVIe siècles mais en avant de 1552) et Olane II (O II), Olane I (O I) pour la période ottomane (1552 – première moitié duXVIIIe siècle) et d’une série de structures archéologiques (complexes – C et fosses – G) qui sont décrites dans les rapport réalisés par le collectif de chercheurs qui ont effectué ces fouilles.La faune analysée est très variée. Le spectre de faune est en effet composé de poissons, reptiles, oiseaux et mammifères domestiques et sauvages. Ces résultats montrent l’intérêt des habitants de la cité tant pour l’exploitation des animaux domestiques que pour la chasse sporadique dans la région avoisinante ou pour les échanges commerciaux avec d’autres communautés. Ceci démontre la connexion de la cité avec la vie économique régionale et européenne au cours de la période pré-ottomane1.Notre démarche scientifique archéozoologique nous permet d’affirmer que l’exploitation des bovins et des caprinés était très importante pour les communautés humaines de la cité de Timișoara. La conquête ottomane a conduit à des modifications dans la diète des habitants, qui se traduisent par une diminution de l’importance du cochon et une augmentation du poids des caprinés au détriment des bovins. Nous avons également mis en évidence la présence du chameau (niveaux médiévales I et II) et du bison d’Europe (en O II) pour la première fois dans le Banat médiéval.Une autre découverte importante est l’identification de restes de dinde dans les niveaux médiévales I et II, un oiseau introduit en Europe après la conquête espagnole de l’Amérique à la fin du XVe siècle et considéré en Roumanie comme exotique avant la période ottomane. La dinde sera élevée dans des fermes à partir du début du XVIIe siècle2 et ne deviendra une espèce domestique commune, au même titre que la poule, le canard ou l’oie, qu’au XVIIIe siècle3.L’identification de restes de la morue de l'Atlantique dans les niveaux médiévaux (M I), alors que cette espèce est également exotique dans cette région du sud-ouest de la Roumanie, montre enfin l’existence de relations commerciales actives et rapides avec le nord de l’Europe à cette période. Le XVIe siècle est marqué par le début de la consommation industrielle de cette espèce de poisson très appréciée dans l’ouest et le nord de l’Europe.
