Background: Hallucinations, including both auditory and visual forms, are often associated with alterations in brain structure, particularly in specific language-related cortical areas. Existing models propose different frameworks for understanding the relationship between brain volume and hallucination proneness, but practical evidence supporting these models is limited. Methods: This study investigated the relationship between hallucination proneness and brain volume in language-related cortical regions, specifically the superior temporal gyrus and Broca's area. A total of 68 participants, primarily university students, completed the Launay-Slade Hallucination Scale (LSHS) to assess hallucination proneness for both auditory and visual experiences. Structural MRI scans were used to measure brain volume in the targeted regions. Results: The results indicated significant positive correlations between LSHS scores and brain volume in the superior temporal gyrus and Broca's area regions previously linked to volume reductions in patients with clinically diagnosed hallucinations. Participants reporting high hallucination proneness for both auditory and visual hallucinations exhibited higher brain volumes in these language areas compared to those experiencing hallucinations rarely or never. Conclusions: These findings challenge existing models by suggesting that higher brain volumes in language-related cortical areas may be associated with increased proneness to both auditory and visual hallucinations in non-clinical populations. This contrasts with the volume reductions seen in patients with clinical hallucinations and highlights the need for further research into the complex interplay between brain structure and hallucinatory experiences.

Numerous neurodegenerative diseases result from altered ion channel function and mutations. The intracellular redox status can significantly alter the gating characteristics of ion channels. Abundant neurodegenerative diseases associated with oxidative stress have been documented, including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, spinocerebellar ataxia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Huntington’s disease. Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species compounds trigger posttranslational alterations that target specific sites within the subunits responsible for channel assembly. These alterations include the adjustment of cysteine residues through redox reactions induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitration, and S-nitrosylation assisted by nitric oxide of tyrosine residues through peroxynitrite. Several ion channels have been directly investigated for their functional responses to oxidizing agents and oxidative stress. This review primarily explores the relationship and potential links between oxidative stress and ion channels in neurodegenerative conditions, such as cerebellar ataxias and Parkinson’s disease. The potential correlation between oxidative stress and ion channels could hold promise for developing innovative therapies for common neurodegenerative diseases.

Objectives: To examine the utilization of current common treatments by providers from different specialties and the effect on delaying spinal surgery in patients with disk degenerative disease (DDD) related low back pain. Design: Retrospective observational study using data from the MarketScan Commercial Claims and Encounters database (2005-2013). Setting: Not applicable. Participants: Patients (N=6229) newly diagnosed with DDD-related low back pain who received interventional treatments from only 1 provider specialty and continuously enrolled in the database for 3 years after diagnosis. Main Outcome Measures: Measures of treatment utilization and cost were constructed for patients who received spinal surgery within 3 years after diagnosis. Cox proportional hazards models were used to examine time to surgery among provider specialties and generalized linear models were used to examine cost differences among provider specialties. Results: Of the 6229 patients, 427 (6.86%) underwent spinal surgery with unadjusted mean interventional treatment costs ranging from $555 to $851. Although the differences in mean costs across provider specialties were large, they were not statistically significant. Cox proportional hazards models showed that there was no significant difference between provider specialties in the time from DDD diagnosis to spinal surgery. However, patients diagnosed with DDD at a younger age and receiving physical therapy had significantly delayed time to surgery (hazard ratio, 0.66; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.54-0.81 and hazard ratio, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.62-0.96, respectively). Conclusions: Although there were no statistically significant differences among provider specialties for time to surgery and cost, patients receiving physical therapy had significantly delayed time to surgery.

This study focuses on enhancing the thermal stability of Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) by introducing Schiff bases, aiming to mitigate thermal degradation. The investigation employs a comprehensive array of analysis techniques, including Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), weight loss estimation, and microscopy (optical, scanning electron, and atomic force) to assess the impact of the modifications. Oven-aging tests reveal notable improvements in color stability for modified PVC films. Results consistently indicate a prolonged color change process in modified PVC, signifying enhanced thermal stability. The modifications demonstrate a remarkable ability to neutralize HCl and passivate labile chlorine atoms; this contributes to elevated thermal resistance and effective prevention of thermal degradation in PVC. This study marks a positive stride towards the development of more stable and reliable PVC materials, with implications for diverse applications demanding superior thermal performance. Background: Parkinson's disease is a multisystem condition that usually presents as a movement disorder in clinical practice. There is no objective method for its diagnosis and therefore the current diagnostic process is based on characteristic clinical signs and symptoms. As the presenting symptoms can be vague and non-specific, there is often a delay in diagnosis leading to mismanagement and delayed treatment initiation. In the UK, GPs identify and initially assess individuals with Parkinson's disease and refer them to specialists for formal diagnosis and treatment initiation. Aim: To use a scoping review to examine the available evidence on the accuracy of Parkinson's disease diagnosis in primary care and to assess the potential for GPs to make a diagnosis and initiate treatment, and hence avoid harmful delays. Design and setting: The scoping methodology as proposed by Westphaln and colleagues that is a modified version of Arksey and O'Malley's original framework was followed. All findings were reported according to PRISMA guidelines for scoping reviews. Method: Four databases (EMBASE, PubMed Central, Cochrane, and CINAHL) and references lists of relevant published literature were systematically searched for all types of literature available in English on the accuracy of Parkinsonism or Parkinson's disease diagnosis in primary care. There were no search restrictions placed on countries, type of studies, or age. Two reviewers independently screened titles and abstracts followed by full-text screening. Results: Out of 1844 studies identified, only six studies met the inclusion criteria. Five were from high-income and one from a middle-income nation. Of these, three studies identified significant knowledge gaps of GPs in diagnosing Parkinson's disease using a questionnaire-based assessment. Delay in appropriate referral because of delayed symptom identification was reported in one study. Only one study compared the accuracy of primary care Parkinson's disease diagnosis with that of specialists, and reported that, although specialists' diagnosis showed more sensitivity, GPs had higher specificity in diagnosing Parkinson's disease. However, this study was found to have methodological issues leading to bias in the findings. Conclusion: This scoping review shows that there are no well-conducted studies assessing the accuracy of Parkinson's disease diagnoses when made by GPs. This calls for more focused research in this area as diagnostic delays and errors may lead to potentially harmful but preventable delays in treatment initiation resulting in decreased quality of life for individuals with Parkinson's disease. The multiband, multifunctional chiral metasurface with asymmetric transmission exhibits significant potential for diverse applications in modern communication systems, ranging from enhanced signal modulation and polarization control to advanced beam steering and compact antenna design. This research presents a versatile and advanced chiral metasurface operating at multiple bands with diverse functionalities, including asymmetric transmission. The proposed metasurface effectively transforms an incoming Linearly Polarized (LP) wave into a Circularly Polarized (CP) wave. Additionally, it functions as a 90° polarization rotator for the incident LP wave. The design starts with an element of a 2 × 2 supercell comprising a Square Split Ring Resonator (SSRR) and an I-shaped resonator. The right diagonal elements of a supercell undergo scaling down, giving rise to a rotational asymmetry. Chirality is introduced into the design, and cross polarization conversion is enhanced by rotating all four elements by 90° relative to each other. On the back side of the substrate, each element undergoes a 90° rotation compared to its counterpart on the front side, realizing the asymmetric transmission feature. The incorporation of multiband and multifunctional features within a single supercell equips the subject chiral metasurface to be utilized in various engineering applications.

Abstract A variety of reasons have made it more difficult for educators and tutors to anticipate students’ performance. Numerous researchers have used various predictive models to identify students who may be at-risk of dropping out early. Additionally, these methods were used to forecast final semester grades based on various datasets. However, these prediction models still fall short of meeting educational management requirements. In this paper, we propose the deep learning (DL) based model named students academic performance prediction network (SAPPNet) to predict the students’ grades. We consider the questionnaire-based Jordan University dataset which contains demographic information, usage of digital tools before and after COVID-19, sleep times before and after COVID-19, social interaction, psychological state, and academic performance. SAPPNet consists of spatial convolution modules which are designed to extract spatial dependencies includes categorical and numerical attributes that represent static features (gender, level/year, age, digital tools used before and after COVID-19, psychological condition using prolonged e-learning tools) and temporal module for temporal dependencies involves sequences that capture changes before and after COVID-19. Additionally, we also try to implement classical machine learning (ML) models including support vector machine, k nearest neighbor, decision tree, and random forest, and DL models named artificial neural network, convolutional neural network, long short-term memory, and students learning prediction network. Simulation results show that SAPPNet achieved the best performance compared to state-of-the-art methods, with an accuracy, precision, recall, and an F1-score of $$93\%$$ 93 % . The proposed model with spatial and temporal modules improves the prediction performance, and it implies new aspect of the educational dataset.

This article provides an update on pain syndromes in Parkinson's disease (PD) for general practice. PD is a multisystem condition that affects 1%–3% of the population aged >65 years and presents with motor, neurological, psychiatric, and gastrointestinal manifestations. Pain is a common and often unrecognised symptom of PD, with a prevalence greater than age-matched controls with other chronic diseases. The main types of pain syndromes encountered in PD are central pain, peripheral pain, musculoskeletal pain, and pain due to dystonia and akathisia. The article emphasizes the importance of non-pharmacological approaches to pain management, such as a balanced diet, exercise therapy, and alternative therapies. Pharmacological options for pain management include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, tricyclic antidepressants, and opioid analgesics. The article also provides specific treatment options for different types of pain syndromes. Overall, the article highlights the need for accurate recognition and appropriate treatment of pain in PD to improve quality of life for patients. [Extracted from the article]

Extensive research into platinum-based chemotherapeutics has been underway for decades with ruthenium-based complexes emerging as interesting and potent candidates. Even still, there is no evidence of a single mechanism of action across all synthesized and tested Ru-based complexes, prompting the continuance of research in this field. In addition, the mechanism of action varies according to cell line and/or animal model and is seemingly highly individualized and personalized. In accordance with this, the ruthenium complexes are able to activate specific molecular pathways and interact with certain targets within the cell, sometimes reported simultaneously. In this review, we attempt to give a new perspective on ruthenium complexes’ anti-cancer properties and organize selected results from the past 15 years of research connecting their structure with the reported mechanism of action. These results corroborate the previously reported great potential that ruthenium complexes have on cancer in vitro. In addition, the review provides insight into Ru drugs in their clinical trials and their efficacy against cancer including a historical context on metallodrugs, particularly platinum-based complexes, and their antitumor capability.

Chondrosarcomas of the larynx are rare, mainly arising from cartilages of the larynx, including cricoid cartilage, thyroid cartilage epiglottis, and arytenoid cartilages. These can be misdiagnosed initially as benign malignancy. Historically, the treatment used to be surgery, which usually is total thyroidectomy with a loss of voice forever. No gross improvements in treatment occurred, and surgery was the mainstay of the treatment. Chondrosarcoma from other anatomical regions can very rarely cause thyroid metastasis. Here, we present a case of an elderly male who presented with a multinodular goiter and underwent thyroidectomy. On histopathology, he was diagnosed with grade 2, conventional chondrosarcoma.

The demand for reconfigurable devices for emerging RF and microwave applications has been growing in recent years, with additive manufacturing and photonic thermal treatment presenting new possibilities to supplement conventional fabrication processes to meet this demand. In this paper, we present the realization and analysis of barium–strontium–titanate-(Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3)-based ferroelectric variable capacitors (varactors), which are additively deposited on top of conventionally fabricated interdigitated capacitors and enhanced by photonic thermal processing. The ferroelectric solution with suspended BST nanoparticles is deposited on the device using an ambient spray pyrolysis method and is sintered at low temperatures using photonic thermal processing by leveraging the high surface-to-volume ratio of the BST nanoparticles. The deposited film is qualitatively characterized using SEM imaging and XRD measurements, while the varactor devices are quantitatively characterized by using high-frequency RF measurements from 300 MHz to 10 GHz under an applied DC bias voltage ranging from 0 V to 50 V. We observe a maximum tunability of 60.6% at 1 GHz under an applied electric field of 25 kV/mm (25 V/μm). These results show promise for the implementation of photonic thermal processing and additive manufacturing as a means to integrate reconfigurable ferroelectric varactors in flexible electronics or tightly packaged on-chip applications, where a limited thermal budget hinders the conventional thermal processing.

The intricate nanostructured surface of black silicon (BSi) has advanced photodetector technology by enhancing light absorption. Herein, we delve into the latest advancements in BSi surface modification techniques, specifically focusing on their profound impact on light trapping and resultant photodetector performance improvement. Established methods such as metal-assisted chemical etching, electrochemical etching, reactive ion etching, plasma etching, and laser ablation are comprehensively analyzed, delving into their mechanisms and highlighting their respective advantages and limitations. We also explore the impact of BSi on the emerging applications in silicon (Si)-based photodetectors, showcasing their potential for pushing the boundaries of light-trapping efficiency. Throughout this review, we critically evaluate the trade-offs between fabrication complexity and performance enhancement, providing valuable insights for future development in this rapidly evolving field. This knowledge on the BSi surface modification and its applications in photodetectors can play a crucial role in future implementations to substantially boost light trapping and the performance of Si-based optical detection devices consequently.

Photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) presents a pivotal solution to address meteorological and ecological challenges. Currently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with their crystalline porosity, adjustable structures, and diverse chemical functionalities have garnered significant attention in the realm of photocatalytic CO2 reduction. This review provides a brief introduction to CO2 reduction and MOF material and their applications in CO2 reduction. Then, it undertakes a comprehensive examination of MOFs, summarizing their key attributes, including porosity, large surface area, structural multifunctionalities, and responsiveness to visible light, along with an analysis of heterojunctions and their methods of preparation. Additionally, it elucidates the fundamental principle of photocatalysis and CO2 reduction, encompassing both half and overall reactions. Furthermore, the classification of MOF-based materials is explored, along with the proposed mechanism for CO2 reduction and an update on recent developments in this field. Finally, this review outlines the challenges and potential opportunities for utilizing MOFs in CO2 reduction, offering valuable insights to scholars seeking innovative approaches not only to enhance CO2 reduction but also to advance other photocatalytic processes.
