Abstract

We present a perturbation result for generators of $C_0$-semigroups which can be considered as an operator theoretic version of the Weiss-Staffans perturbation theorem for abstract linear systems. The result are illustrated by applications to the Desch-Schappacher, the Miyadera Voigt perturbation theorems, and to unbounded perturbations of the boundary conditions of a generator.

Abstract

String equations related to 2D gravity seem to provide, quite naturally and systematically, integrable kernels, in the sense of Its-Izergin-Korepin and Slavnov. Some of these kernels (besides the "classical" examples of Airy and Pearcey) have already appeared in random matrix theory and they have a natural Wronskian structure, given by one of the operators in the string relation $[L^\pm,Q^\pm] = \pm 1$, namely $L^\pm$. The kernels are intimately related to wave functions for Gel'fand-Dickey reductions of the KP hierarchy. The Fredholm determinants of these kernels also satisfy Virasoro constraints leading to PDEs for their log derivatives, and these PDEs depend explicitly on the solutions of Painlev\'e-like systems of ODEs equivalent to the relevant string relations. We give some examples coming from critical phenomena in random matrix theory (higher order Tracy-Widom distributions) and statistical mechanics (Ising models)., Comment: Accepted for publication on the AMS Contemporary Mathematics Series, 36 pages

Abstract

Airy and Pearcey-like kernels and generalizations arising in random matrix theory are expressed as double integrals of ratios of exponentials, possibly multiplied with a rational function. In this work it is shown that such kernels are intimately related to wave functions for polynomial (Gel'fand-Dickey reductions) or rational reductions of the KP-hierarchy; their Fredholm determinant also satisfies linear PDEs (Virasoro constraints), yielding, in a systematic way, non-linear PDEs for the Fredholm determinant of such kernels. Examples include Fredholm determinants giving the gap probability of some infinite-dimensional diffusions, like the Airy process, with or without outliers, and the Pearcey process, with or without inliers., Comment: Minor revision: accepted for publication on Physica D

13. Singularity confinement for a class of $m$-th order difference equations of combinatorics

Abstract

In a recent publication, it was shown that a large class of integrals over the unitary group U(n) satisfy difference equations over $n$, involving a finite number of steps; special cases are generating functions appearing in questions of longest increasing subsequences in random permutations and words. The main result of the paper states that these difference equations have the \emph{discrete Painlev\'e property}; roughly speaking, this means that, after a finite number of steps, the solution to these difference equations may develop a pole (Laurent solution), depending on the maximal number of free parameters, and immediately after be finite again (``\emph{singularity confinement}''). The technique used in the proof is based on an intimate relationship between the difference equations (discrete time) and the Toeplitz lattice (continuous time differential equations); the point is that the ``Painlev\'e property'' for the discrete relations is inherited from the ``Painlev\'e property'' of the (continuous) Toeplitz lattice.

Abstract

It is known that some matrix integrals over U(n) satisfy an sl(2,R)-algebra of Virasoro constraints. Acting with these Virasoro generators on 2-dimensional Schur function expansions leads to difference relations on the coefficients of this expansions. These difference relations, set equal to zero, are precisely the backward and forward equations for non-intersecting random walks. The transition probabilities for these random walks appear as the coefficients of an expansion of U(n)-matrix integrals (of the type above), by inserting in the integral the product of two Schur polynomials associated with two partitions; the latter are specified by the initial and final positions of the non-intersecting random walk. An essential ingredient in this work is the generalization of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule to the action of Virasoro on Schur polynomials., Comment: 60 pages

In testing the independence of two Gaussian populations, one computes the distribution of the sample canonical correlation coefficients, given that the actual correlation is zero. The "Laplace transform" of this distribution is not only an integral over the Grassmannian of p-dimensional planes in complex n-space, but is also related to a generalized hypergeometric function. Such integrals are solutions of Painlev\'e-like equations. They also have expansions, related to random words of length l formed with an alphabet of p letters. Given that each letter appears in the word, the maximal length of the disjoint union of p increasing subsequences of the word clearly equals l. But the maximal length of the disjoint union of p-1 increasing subsequences leads to a non-trivial distribution. Abstract

We study the Pfaff lattice, introduced by us in the context of a Lie algebra splitting of gl(infinity) into sp(infinity) and lower-triangular matrices. We establish a set of bilinear identities, which we show to be equivalent to the Pfaff Lattice. In the semi-infinite case, the tau-functions are Pfaffians; interesting examples are the matrix integrals over symmetric matrices (symmetric matrix integrals) and matrix integrals over self-dual quaternionic Hermitean matrices (symplectic matrix integrals). There is a striking parallel of the Pfaff lattice with the Toda lattice, and more so, there is a map from one to the other. In particular, we exhibit two maps, dual to each other, (i) from the the Hermitean matrix integrals to the symmetric matrix integrals, and (ii) from the Hermitean matrix integrals to the symplectic matrix integrals. Skew orthogonal polynomials arise in the calculation of the $n$-point distribution function for the eigenvalues of ensembles of random matrices with orthogonal or symplectic symmetry. In particular, the distribution functions are completely determined by a certain sum involving the skew orthogonal polynomials. In the cases that the eigenvalue probability density function involves a classical weight function, explicit formulas for the skew orthogonal polynomials are given in terms of related orthogonal polynomials, and the structure is used to give a closed form expression for the sum. Consider a symmetric (finite) matrix ensemble, with a certain probability distribution. What is the probability that the spectrum belongs to a certain interval or union of intervals on the real line? In this paper, we show that, upon introducing an appropriate time parameter, this probability is intimately related to Pfaffians, which as a vector satisfy the so-called Pfaff lattice. The latter is a particular reduction of the 2d-Toda lattice. In particular, they satisfy a KP-like equation, but with a right hand side, depending on nearest neighbors. Abstract

What is the connection of random matrices with integrable systems? Is this connection really useful? The answer to these questions leads to a new and unifying approach to the theory of random matrices. Introducing an appropriate time t-dependence in the probability distribution of the matrix ensemble, leads to vertex operator expressions for the n-point correlation functions (probabilities of n eigenvalues in infinitesimal intervals) and the corresponding Fredholm determinants (probabilities of no eigenvalue in a Borel subset E); the latter probability is a ratio of tau-functions for the KP-equation, whose numerator satisfy partial differential equations, which decouple into the sum of two parts: a Virasoro-like part depending on time only and a Vect(S^1)-part depending on the boundary points A_i of E. Upon setting t=0, and using the KP-hierarchy to eliminate t-derivatives, these PDE's lead to a hierarchy of non-linear PDE's, purely in terms of the A_i. These PDE's are nothing else but the KP hierarchy for which the t-partials, viewed as commuting operators, are replaced by non-commuting operators in the endpoints A_i of the E under consideration. Let KdV stand for the Nth Gelfand-Dickey reduction of the KP hierarchy. The purpose of this paper is to show that any KdV solution leads effectively to a solution of the q-approximation of KdV. Two different q-KdV approximations were proposed, one by Frenkel and a variation by Khesin et al. We show there is a dictionary between the solutions of q-KP and the 1-Toda lattice equations, obeying some special requirement; this is based on an algebra isomorphism between difference operators and D-operators, where $Df(x)=f(qx)$. First we construct an infinite dimensional space {\cal W}=\Span_\BC \{\psi_0(z),\psi_1(z),... \} of functions of z\in\BC invariant under the action of two operators, multiplication by z^p and A_c:= z \partial/\partial z - z + c. Abstract

Aim: Absent pulmonary valve syndrome (APVS) is found in 3-6% of patients with Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). Along with findings of TOF, absence of pulmonary valve tissue results in aneurysmal dilatation of the main and branch pulmonary arteries compressing the trachea, main-stem, and intrapulmonary bronchi leading to obstructive airways disease. Our objective was to review pulmonary function tests (PFT) in TOF-APVS patients. Materials and Methods: Eight PFT were performed on five mechanically ventilated TOF-APVS patients in the intensive care unit. Tidal volume, forced vital capacity (FVC), maximal expiratory flow 25%, resistance and compliance of the respiratory system were measured. Results: Pre-operative PFTs showed markedly elevated airways resistance (R RS ) (median 0.45 cmH 2 O/mL/sec, range 0.17-0.66) and marked variability of the static compliance of the respiratory system (C RS ) (median 0.6 mL/cmH 2 O/kg, range 0.25-2.6). Flow-volume loops measured by forced deflation showed flow limitation within the medium to small airways. Post-operative FVC was reduced in four of the five patients (median 46 mL/kg, IQR 42.9 - 48.8 mL/kg). Patients studied with various levels of positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) showed improvement in tidal volume and reduced obstruction with PEEP greater than 10 cmH 2 O. For three patients with pre-operative data available, surgical correction resulted in near-normal post-operative C RS and improved, but still elevated R RS (median 0.14 cmH 2 O/mL/sec, interquartile range [IQR] 0.11-0.31). Conclusion: For our patients with TOF-APVS, airway resistance was elevated. Flow limitation was seen in the medium to small airways with a mild reduction of FVC. PFTs may help guide management of mechanical ventilation for TOF-APVS patients.

Abstract

Objectives ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV) can affect all age groups. We aimed to show that differences in disease presentation and 6 month outcome between younger- and older-onset patients are still incompletely understood. Methods We included patients enrolled in the Diagnostic and Classification Criteria for Primary Systemic Vasculitis (DCVAS) study between October 2010 and January 2017 with a diagnosis of AAV. We divided the population according to age at diagnosis: Results A total of 1338 patients with AAV were included: 66% had disease onset at Conclusion Within 6 months of diagnosis of AAV, patients >65 years of age display a different pattern of organ involvement and an increased risk of significant damage and mortality compared with younger patients.

44. A Unified Approach to Information Security Compliance

Abstract

The increased number of government-mandated and private contractual information security requirements in recent years has caused higher education security professionals to view information security as another aspect of regulatory or contractual compliance. The existence of fines, penalties, or loss (including bad publicity) has also increased the incentive to implement comprehensive information security practices. By adopting a unified approach to information security compliance, higher education institutions will be able to effectively manage the growing number of information security compliance programs. This approach begins by reviewing all of the information security requirements imposed by the emerging statutory, regulatory, and contractual legal standards. These standards are then compared with the more established national and international information security standards. After a thorough risk assessment and analysis, the legal standards and the information security standards are blended to create a complete information security compliance program. A unified approach to information security compliance thus enables colleges and universities not only to address identified risks but also to comply with the law. 46. Digital patient-centred learning in medical education: A national learning platform with virtual patients as part of the DigiPaL project

Abstract

Background: Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the medical faculties in the Federal Republic of Germany converted their curricula to digital formats on a large scale and very quickly in spring 2020 as an emergency measure. At the same time, a start was made on the nationwide exchange of digital teaching/learning materials via the online platform "LOOOP share" in order to save local resources. Among other things, virtual patient cases (VP) were shared across faculties for case-based learning, through which students can acquire clinical decision-making skills.Objectives: Within the framework of the cooperation project "National Learning Platforms for Digital Patient-Related Learning in Medical Studies" (DigiPaL), the usability of VPs for students and teachers should be improved, and the spectrum of disease patterns that are covered by VPs should be systematically expanded. Results: With the participation of many locations, a total of 150 VPs were developed by 96 case authors from 16 faculties, in addition to the existing 403 VPs. The thematic selection was made on the basis of criteria oriented to the National Competence Based Catalogue of Learning Objectives for Undergraduate Medical Education (NKLM). After completion, these VPs were also made available to all faculties for free use via "LOOOP share" and the CASUS learning platform.Discussion: Even after the pandemic, these developed VPs should be available to the faculties and thus make a lasting contribution to improve medical training in Germany - especially in light of digital teaching formats being expressly advocated on the basis of the adapted current Medical Licensure Act (ÄApprO). A possible application is interdisciplinary learning of clinical decision-making with the help of blended learning formats within the framework of a longitudinal curriculum. The large number of involved colleagues and faculties shows that the nationally coordinated development of VPs across faculties was commonly seen as useful., Hintergrund: Auf Grund der Coronavirus-Pandemie haben die Medizinischen Fakultäten in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland ihre Curricula im Frühjahr 2020 großflächig und sehr rasch im Sinne eines Notfallplans auf digitale Formate umgestellt. Parallel wurde damit begonnen, digitale Lehr-/Lernangebote über die bereitgestellte Online-Plattform "LOOOP share" bundesweit auszutauschen, um lokale Ressourcen zu schonen. Unter anderem wurden auch virtuelle Patient*innen-Fälle (VP) für das fallbasierte Lernen fakultätsübergreifend geteilt, durch welche die Studierenden klinische Entscheidungskompetenzen erwerben können.Ziele: Im Rahmen des zu dieser Zeit initiierten Kooperationsprojektes "Nationale Lernplattformen für digitales patientenbezogenes Lernen im Medizinstudium" (DigiPaL) sollte u.a. die Nutzbarkeit von VP für Studierende und Lehrende verbessert und das Spektrum der verbindlich für die Lehre verfügbaren Krankheitsbilder systematisch erweitert werden. Ergebnisse: Unter Beteiligung vieler Standorte wurden ergänzend zu den bereits bestehenden 403 VP von 96 Fallautor*innen aus 16 Fakultäten insgesamt weitere 150 VP entwickelt. Die thematische Auswahl erfolgte auf Basis von am Nationalen Kompetenzbasierten Lernzielkatalog Medizin 2.0 (NKLM) orientierten Kriterien. Diese VP wurden dann nach Fertigstellung ebenfalls über LOOOP share und die Lernplattform CASUS allen Fakultäten zur freien Nutzung zur Verfügung gestellt.Diskussion: Auch nach der Pandemie sollen diese entwickelten VP den Fakultäten zur Verfügung stehen und so nachhaltig zur Verbesserung der medizinischen Ausbildung in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland beitragen - insbesondere vor dem Hintergrund, dass auf Basis der angepassten aktuellen Ärztlichen Approbationsordnung (ÄApprO) digitale Lehrformate ausdrücklich befürwortet werden. Abstract

ObjectiveTo develop and validate revised classification criteria for eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA).MethodsPatients with vasculitis or comparator diseases were recruited into an international cohort. The study proceeded in five phases: (1) identification of candidate criteria items using consensus methodology, (2) prospective collection of candidate items present at the time of diagnosis, (3) data-driven reduction of the number of candidate items, (4) expert panel review of cases to define the reference diagnosis and (5) derivation of a points-based risk score for disease classification in a development set using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator logistic regression, with subsequent validation of performance characteristics in an independent set of cases and comparators.ResultsThe development set for EGPA consisted of 107 cases of EGPA and 450 comparators. The validation set consisted of an additional 119 cases of EGPA and 437 comparators. From 91 candidate items, regression analysis identified 11 items for EPGA, 7 of which were retained. The final criteria and their weights were as follows: maximum eosinophil count ≥1×109/L (+5), obstructive airway disease (+3), nasal polyps (+3), cytoplasmic antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) or anti-proteinase 3–ANCA positivity (−3), extravascular eosinophilic predominant inflammation (+2), mononeuritis multiplex/motor neuropathy not due to radiculopathy (+1) and haematuria (−1). After excluding mimics of vasculitis, a patient with a diagnosis of small- or medium-vessel vasculitis could be classified as having EGPA if the cumulative score was ≥6 points. When these criteria were tested in the validation data set, the sensitivity was 85% (95% CI 77% to 91%) and the specificity was 99% (95% CI 98% to 100%).ConclusionThe 2022 American College of Rheumatology/European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology Classification Criteria for Eosinophilic Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis demonstrate strong performance characteristics and are validated for use in research.
