Purpose: Part 2 of this German S3 clinical practice guideline provides recommendations for the process of manufacturing composite restorations. It covers key aspects like caries removal, field isolation, matrix and adhesive techniques, as well as light curing and polishing. The outcomes of interest include survival rates and restoration quality. Materials and Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted by two methodologists using MEDLINE and the Cochrane Library via the OVID platform, including studies up to December 2021. Additionally, the reference lists of relevant manuscripts were manually reviewed. Six PICO questions were developed to guide the search. Consensus-based recommendations were formulated by a panel of dental professionals from 20 national societies and organizations based on the collected evidence and expert opinion. Results: The guideline advocates for one-stage selective caries removal near the pulp and underscores the effectiveness of various isolation techniques, adhesive systems, and the crucial role of light polymerization. The use of anatomically preformed sectional matrices and phosphoric acid etching is recommended to enhance restoration quality. Additionally, polishing composite restorations is advised to improve surface finish. Conclusion: This guideline provides comprehensive recommendations that inform clinicians on optimizing the composite restoration manufacturing processes. While viscoelastic, adhesive contact rupture of simple indenters is well studied, contact formation has received much less attention. Here, we present simulations of the formation of contact between various power law indenters and an adhesive, viscoelastic foundation. For all investigated indenters, we find that the macroscopic relaxation time τ scales approximately with 1/ρ1.8, where ρ is the range of adhesion. The prolongation of contact formation with Tabor parameter is rationalized by the increased dissipation that short-range adhesion causes on a moving crack. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to characterize how water capillary forces impact polymer‐substrate adhesion in ambient conditions. We analyzed hydrophobic poly(styrene‐co‐butadiene) interacting with mica, silicon, and graphite substrates, each with distinct surface properties. Using polymer‐coated AFM tips/blank substrates, and vice versa, we explored the roles of water capillary forces and polymer‐substrate interactions on adhesion. When force spectroscopy experiments were conducted using polymer‐coated tips, adhesion was the largest on mica due to substantial water capillary forces between the tip and hydrophilic substrate. However, when using a blank tip and polymer‐coated substrates, the adhesion was largest on graphite and smallest on mica. This is because the blank tip interacted with the same hydrophobic polymer film for each experiment; therefore, water capillary forces had an equal magnitude on each substrate, allowing polymer‐substrate interactions to be compared even within ambient conditions. Moreover, single‐chain desorption events were consistently observed in these force‐distance curves since water capillary forces were significantly reduced. This study elucidated several aspects of how water capillary forces impact polymer‐substrate adhesion, which benefits applications reliant on polymer adhesion in ambient conditions and contributes to the fundamental understanding of polymer interface interactions. Carcinoembryonic antigen‐related cell adhesion molecule 1 (CEACAM1) is a membrane protein that plays an important role in a variety of immune and non‐immune functions. Such functions are regulated by its activity as a homophilic ligand but also through its ability to interact as a heterophilic ligand with various host proteins. These include CEACAM5, T cell immunoglobulin‐mucin like protein‐3 (TIM‐3) and, potentially, protein death protein 1 (PD‐1). Furthermore, CEACAM1 is targeted by various pathogens to allow them to invade a host and bypass an effective immune response. Clinically, CEACAM1 plays an important role in infectious diseases, autoimmunity and cancer. In this review, we describe the structural basis for CEACAM1 interactions as a homophilic and heterophilic ligand. We discuss the regulation of its monomeric, dimeric and oligomeric states in cis and trans binding as well as the consequences for eliciting downstream signalling activities. Metamaterial design approaches, which integrate structural elements into material systems, enable the control of uncommon behaviours by decoupling local and global properties. Leveraging this conceptual framework, metamaterial adhesives incorporate nonlinear cut architectures into adhesive films to achieve unique combinations of adhesion capacity, release, and spatial tunability by controlling how cracks propagate forward and in reverse directions during separation. Here, metamaterial adhesive designs are explored with triangular cut features while integrating hierarchical and secondary cut patterns among primary nonlinear cuts. Both cut geometry and secondary cut features tune adhesive force capacity and energy of separation. Importantly, the size and spacing of cut features must be designed around a critical length scale. When secondary cut features are greater than a critical length, cracks can be steered in multiple directions, going both forward and backwards within a primary attachment element. This control over crack dynamics enhances the work of separation by a factor of 1.5, while maintaining the peel force relative to a primary cut. If hierarchical cut features are too small or too compliant, they interact and do not distinctly modify crack behaviour. This work highlights the importance of adhesive length scales and stiffness for crack control and attachment characteristics in adhesive films. Stickiness is a phenomenon observed widely in sludge drying practices, which negatively impacts the sludge drying efficiency. This paper was aimed at evaluating the stickiness characteristics of sludge when the sand content of sludge increases during the rainy season, and carrying out stickiness modification experiments on high sand content sludge. The results indicated that the sand content was significantly positively correlated with the stickiness of sludge. During drying process, the adhesion force and cohesion force of sludge decreased with the increase of drying temperature, and the adhesion force was consistently greater than the cohesion force in every group. The sludge stickiness was reduced after ultrasonic treatment and calcium oxide modification, but the reduction effect of sodium dodecyl sulfate on sludge stickiness was not good. This study confirmed the effect of sand content on sludge stickiness, and the stickiness of sludge with high sand content can be reduced by modifier. These findings contribute to our understanding of the stickiness of sludge with high sand content in the rainy season and provide valuable insights for the optimization of sludge drying process. Hydrogels hold great promise in the field of flexible electronics. Attempts in this area tend to the microstructure design of hydrogels, giving them specific adhesion and multi‐sensing functions. Here, a novel phase separation‐derived anisotropic adhesive structural color hydrogel film is presented for visually flexible electronics. The hydrogel film is generated by template replicating colloidal crystal by using phase separation emulsions of hydrophilic monomer (acrylic acid, AA), hydrophobic monomer (lauryl methacrylate, LMA), co‐monomer ([2‐(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] dimethyl‐(3‐sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide (SBMA)), surfactants (hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, CTAB) and initiator (ammonium persulphate (APS)). The appearance of phase separation results in asymmetric morphologies of hydrogel film, imparting them with anisotropic adhesive performance. Attributed to the formation of inverse opal scaffold structure, the hydrogel film is featured with vivid structural color, showing superior capability in self‐reporting mechanical behavior. Additionally, benefitting from the presence of abundant ions, the hydrogel film exhibits great conductivity. Thus, the resultant hydrogel film is demonstrated with stable dual‐signal sensing properties involving color‐changing and conductivity feedback ability to respond to human activities. Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) exhibit extraordinary energy dissipation due to their unique viscoelastic response, resulting from the rotation of mesogens under mechanical stress. While recent studies demonstrate the LCE‐based pressure‐sensitive adhesives (PSAs) by exploiting the enhanced damping, all previous studies have focused on LCEs with covalent crosslinks. Here, a new class of PSAs is developed by integrating movable polyrotaxane crosslinkers into an LCE matrix (PRx‐LCEs). Dynamic viscoelastic measurements reveal that PRx‐LCE exhibits a remarkably high energy dissipation, as indicated by a large tan δ. Interestingly, the secondary tan δ peak associated with LCE damping is more pronounced than the primary peak of the glass transition. The exceptional energy dissipation in PRx‐LCE results in superior adhesion strength (≈1864 N m−1), which is 3.5 times higher than conventional LCEs and 13 times higher than commercial PSAs in the peel test. Additionally, PRx‐LCEs demonstrate thermally reversible adhesion, enabling clean removal at elevated temperatures. Furthermore, the sliding effect in PRx‐LCE enhances both deformability and stress relaxation under load, resulting in deeper indentation, and superior adhesion during the probe tack test. The combination of LCE and slidable crosslinks provides robust and switchable adhesion, making them promising for applications in biomedical engineering, display, and semiconductor industries. Introduction: Deceleration of disease progression and re-establishment of microbial balance in the gut is often achieved by application of lactobacilli strains. Their beneficial effects are associated with probiotic properties, which may be accompanied by immunomodulatory action at mucosal surfaces. Methods: To single out such strains, we screened almost three hundred lactobacilli isolates from eight genera and various food sources for acid and bile salt tolerance, adhesion to mucin as well as hemolytic activity and antibiotic susceptibility. Moreover, the immunomodulatory effects of cell-free supernatant (CFS) fractions of five lactobacilli strains were assessed using an in vitro cell line model. Results and discussion: By our rationalized selection approach, we identified thirty-five strains with probiotic potential and biosafety features. Additionally, we showed that CFS from the Lactiplantibacillus L_4 strain downregulates proinflammatory cytokines IL-8 and IL-1β. In contrast, IL-8 expression was found to increase after treatment with CFSs of Lactiplantibacillus L_2 and L_5 and IL-1β was upregulated by CFSs of Lactiplantibacillus L_1 and Lactiplantibacillus L_3. Overall, our result delineate a rational approach of selecting lactobacilli strains for probiotic development to support the gut microbiota equilibrium and reinforce the host immune system. In addressing the critical limitations associated with platelet storage, the study investigates an innovative solution aimed at preventing the unwanted activation of platelets within storage bags. This activation is a key factor that currently restricts the shelf life of platelet products to only 72 h, leading to extreme waste production and high costs. Here, highly effective surfaces are identified for minimizing surface‐induced platelet activation. Using thermal nanoimprint lithography (T‐NIL), a new method is demonstrated for patterning reproducible agarose micro/nanostructures (a natural hydrogel with anti‐platelet adhesive properties) including dots, chains, pills, and squares. The agarose (3%) structured surfaces displayed outstanding flexibility and hydrophilic behavior that prevented platelet adhesion as confirmed by confocal microscopy. Importantly, pill‐shaped structures effectively maintained their ability to prevent platelet adhesion, even after a long cell‐contacting duration. Atomic force microscopy indicated that the effectiveness of dampening platelet adherence is determined by the shape, size, height, and aspect ratio of the structures. A model is provided to explain how the different shapes affect wettability and thereby hinder platelet adherence. The developed anti‐adhesive agarose structured surfaces show promise to revolutionize platelet storage, provide vital insights into biomaterials research, and demonstrate the potential of tailored agarose surfaces in biomedical applications. BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal stem cells possess characteristics such as rapid renewal, targeted homing, tissue repair, and immune regulation, which provide potential for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. In most inflammatory diseases, interleukin-1β is highly expressed. Both exogenous and endogenous mesenchymal stem cells unavoidably exist in an environment with high interleukin -1β concentration. OBJECTIVE: To study the interaction of interleukin-1β with mesenchymal stem cells in inflammatory environment and the mechanism of its influence on the migration and adhesion of mesenchymal stem cells to provide a theoretical basis for adjusting stem cell therapy strategies. METHODS: The first author searched for studies involving interleukin-1β enhancing migration and adhesion of mesenchymal stem cells by computer on CNKI, WanFang, VIP, PubMed, and Web of Science using search terms “interleukin-1β, mesenchymal stem cell, nuclear factor-κB, MAPK, ERK, p38, migration, adhesion” in Chinese and English. The literature tracing method was also used to search for some of the literature. Finally, 65 articles were included in the review analysis. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: (1) In the inflammatory environment, interleukin-1β can regulate the migration and adhesion ability of mesenchymal stem cells. This effect may be achieved by recruiting IRAK1 through interleukin-1RI and then activating TAK1 and IKK in turn. After IKK phosphorylation, nuclear factor-κB and ERK signaling pathways are activated or CXCR expression is upregulated through the p38 pathway to promote mesenchymal stem cell migration and adhesion. However, further standardized research needs to be carried out based on the genetic background of mesenchymal stem cells, the dose and processing time of interleukin-1β. (2) In vitro experiments using pre-stimulated mesenchymal stem cells with interleukin-1β can change the survival environment of mesenchymal stem cells and alter their secretion factors to make them develop towards a more anti-inflammatory direction. On the other hand, under the premise of producing higher levels of anti-inflammatory and pro-nutrient factors, extracted mesenchymal stem cell exosomes can exert antiinflammatory effects. (3) It has been observed in various animal disease models that pre-stimulating mesenchymal stem cells with interleukin-1β regulates their immune regulation ability, thereby affecting the development and outcome of inflammation. However, this is limited to preclinical basic research only; further verification on efficacy and safety of stem cell therapy with interleukin-1β pre-treated mesenchymal stem cells is required in clinical settings. This article reports the synthesis of a novel perfluoropolyalkylether (PFPAE) vinylether monomer and its use as a comonomer in the thiol‐ene photopolymerization of a trifunctional thiol together with a trifunctional vinylether. The crosslinked copolymers are obtained in the form of few mm thick layers and characterized. By changing the thiol/ene ratio, the polymers are optimized to tailor their surface composition and obtain adhesion between two thick layers despite the presence of the fluorinated monomer. The final bilayered structures are adhesive, and appeared chemically resistant, with good dimensional stability: therefore, these fluorinated thiol–ene based copolymers are likely to be of interest for applications based on layer‐by‐layer processes, such as additive manufacturing and microfluidics. AbstractAmong the diverse adhesive-bonded joining methods, the co-curing technique offers several advantages for fusing structural components. Co-curing technique effectively enhances specific strengths and ensures more equitable stress distribution. This research investigated the multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) incorporated with varying wt.% in carbon fibre-reinforced polymeric (CFRP) composite joints through co-cure bonding techniques. The effects of flexural and vibration behaviour in CFRP composite joints were evaluated using the three-point bending and free vibration tests. Experimental results revealed that the epoxy adhesive containing 0.5 wt.% nanofiller demonstrated the highest flexural strength and modulus. These values were significantly superior to pure epoxy adhesive, exhibiting increases of 270 and 120%, respectively. However, the 1.0 wt.% of nanofiller exhibited the maximum natural frequency under three vibration modes, which is 29, 17, and 14% higher than the pure epoxy adhesive. The statistical analysis of the results was examined using an ANOVA, ensuring the reliability of the findings. Optimisation and prediction were done with the Levenberg-Marquardt artificial neural network, further reinforcing the confidence in the outcomes. Developing functional adhesives combining strong adhesion, good recyclability and diverse harsh‐condition adaptability is a grand challenge. Here, we introduce a general dendritic molecule doping strategy to activate commercial polymers into a new family of supramolecular adhesives integrating high adhesion strength, ultralow temperature, water resistant and multi‐reusable properties. Our method involves rational design of a new rigid‐flexible coupled dendritic molecule—M4C8OH as a versatile dopant, while simple M4C8OH doping into commercial polymers can modulate internal and external non‐covalent interaction to enable H‐bonding enhanced interchain cross‐linking for tough cohesion along with enhanced interphase interaction. This endows 20 wt % M4C8OH‐doped polycaprolactone (PCL) adhesives (PCL‐M4C8OH) with improved adhesion strength on various substrates with the maximum increase up to 2.87 times that of PCL. In particular, the adhesion strengths of PCL‐M4C8OH on polymethyl methacrylate at 25 °C and −196 °C reach 4.67 and 3.58 MPa—1.9 and 2.3 times those of PCL and superior to diverse commercial adhesives and most reported adhesives. PCL‐M4C8OH also displays markedly‐improved multi‐usability and tolerance against ultralow temperature and diverse wet environments. Mechanism studies reveal the crucial role of M4C8OH molecular structures toward superior adhesion. Our method can be expanded to other polymer matrices, yielding diverse new supramolecular adhesives. This mini-review investigates the effect of numerous surface treatments and the influence of incorporating organic/inorganic nanofillers into polymeric adhesives on the shear behaviour of adhesive-bonded single-lap joints. Surface treatment of the adherend surface and nanofiller reinforcement on the adhesive has enhanced the shear strength of adhesive-bonded joints. This study examined numerous nanofillers (CBs, GNPs, MWCNTs, CNH, MMT, SNPs, RGO, GO, GNOP, and ceramic fillers) reinforcement with varying weight percentages (0–3%) and surface preparation techniques such as grid blasting, acetone cleaning, sandpaper roughing, acid etching, etc. It has been observed that the surface treatment techniques and the addition of nanofillers enhanced the cohesive and adhesive forces between the adherend and the adhesive, causing the adherend and adhesive to mechanically interlock in the overlapping zone. Moreover, 10 phr of organo-modified montmorillonite (MMT) filled epoxy exhibited excellent shear strength among the myriad organic/inorganic nano filler-modified adhesive joints. Most tracheostomy scars are depressive and adherent to the underlying trachea, which causes up and down movement when swallowing. This tracheocutaneous tethering causes discomfort, pain, dysphagia, and bad appearance. A tracheocutaneous fistula may be accompanied. Here, we present a new method for reconstructing a tracheostomy scar deformity with tracheocutaneous tethering: layer-by-layer restoration of the anatomical structure with a subcutaneous fat tissue blanket. The scar tissue was fully excised, with the associated skin and subcutaneous tissue. The bilateral strap muscles around the scar were dissected proximally and distally and approximated to the midline, secured without tension. Bilateral platysma muscle flaps cover them firmly. The subcutaneous tissue around the incision margin, which included the superficial cervical fascia was elevated to form a fat blanket, closed transversely. The skin was closed after confirming the absence of retraction upon swallowing. From 2010 to 2018, 10 patients with tracheocutaneous tethering and one patient with tracheocutaneous fistula underwent surgery. All patients were functionally and aesthetically satisfied with the results. The only complication was a hypertrophic scar in one patient, which was managed with a triamcinolone injection. An anatomical layer-by-layer restoration with a fat blanket provided consistent, satisfying results for correcting tracheostomy scar deformities without using additional tissue. There is no doubt that when solid surfaces are modified, the functional groups and atoms directly bonded to solid atoms play a major role in adsorption interactions with molecules or resins. In this study, the adhesion and dissociation between epoxy resin and molecules containing Si atoms were analyzed. The analysis, conducted in contact with the solid surface of silicon, utilized quantum chemical calculations based on a molecular model. We compared some Si-containing molecular models to test quantum chemical calculations that contribute to the study of adhesion and dissociation between epoxy resins and solid surfaces somehow other than simple potential energy curve calculations. The AFIR (artificial force induced reaction) method, implemented in the GRRM (global reaction route mapping) program, was employed to separate an epoxy resin model molecule and three types of silicon compounds (Si(CH3)2(OH)2, Si(CH3)4, and (CH3)2SiF2) in three directions, determining their minimum dissociation energy when changing the applied energy by 2.5 kJ/mol. In systems with weak hydrogen bonds, such as Si(CH3)4 or (CH3)2SiF2, the energy required for dissociation was not large; however, in systems with strong hydrogen bonds, such as Si(CH3)2(OH)2, dissociation was more difficult in the vertical direction. Although anisotropy due to hydroxyl groups was calculated in the horizontal direction, dissociation remained relatively easy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cellulose produced by bacteria (BC) is considered a promising material for the textile industry, but the fragile and sensitive nature of BC membranes limits their broad applicability. Production of all-cellulose biocomposites, in which the BC is cultivated in situ on a cotton fabric, could solve this problem, but here a new issue arises, namely poor adhesion. To overcome this challenge, cotton fabric was modified with low-pressure oxygen plasma in either afterglow, E-mode, or H-mode. All-cellulose biocomposites were prepared in situ by placing the samples of cotton fabric in BC culture medium and incubating for 7 days to allow BC microfibril networks to form on the fabric. Modification of cotton fabric with oxygen plasma afterglow led to additional functionalization with polar groups, and modification with oxygen plasma in H-mode led also to etching and surface roughening of the cotton fibers, which improved the adhesion within the biocomposite. In addition, these biocomposites showed higher deformation capacities. Modification of the cotton fabric over a longer period in E-mode was found to be unsuitable, as this caused strong etching, which led to the defibrillation of cotton fibers and poor adhesion of BC. The swelling and collapse of responsive nanogels on a planar lipid bilayer are studied by means of mesoscopic computer simulations. The effects of molecular weight, cross‐linking density, and adhesion strength are examined. The conditions for collapse‐mediated engulfing by the bilayer are found. In particular, the results show that at low hydrophobicity level the increase in the nanogel softness decreases the engulfing rate. On the contrary, for stronger hydrophobicity level the trend changes to the opposite one. At the same time, when the cross‐linking density is too low or the adhesion strength is too high the nanogel deformation at the membrane suppresses the engulfing regardless of the network swelling ratio. Finally, for comparative reasons, the behavior of the nanogels is also studied at the solid surface. Purpose: This paper aims to explore how graphene can improve the mechanical and anti-corrosion properties of TiO2-SiO2 sol-gel coating. This sol-gel coating has been prepared on aluminum alloy substrate using graphene as both nano-filler and corrosion inhibitor. Design/methodology/approach: To examine the effect of graphene on mechanical properties of sol-gel coating, the abrasion resistance, adhesion strength and scratch resistance of coating have been evaluated. To reveal the effect of graphene on the anti-corrosion property of coating for aluminum alloy, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has been conducted in 3.5 Wt.% NaCl medium. Findings: Scanning electron microscopy images indicate that graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) have been homogeneously dispersed into the sol-gel coating matrices (at the contents from 0.1 to 0.5 Wt.%). Mechanical tests of coatings indicate that the graphene content of 0.5 Wt.% provides highest values of adhesion strength (1.48 MPa), scratch resistance (850 N) and abrasion strength (812 L./mil.) for the sol-gel coating. The EIS data show that the higher content of GNPs improve both R1 (coating) and R2 (coating/Al interface) resistances. In addition to enhancing the coating barrier performance (graphene acts as nanofiller/nano-reinforcer for coating matrix), other mechanism can be at work to account for the role of the graphene inhibitor in improving the anticorrosive performance at the coating/Al interface. Cellulose nitrate artifacts from the collections of the Queen's University Master of Art Conservation Program and Glanmore National Historic Site were examined and treated by graduate students in the Master of Art Conservation Program at Queen's. Each object was in a varied state of degradation with unique condition problems. Under the supervision of the artifacts conservation professor, graduate students identified the materials constituting their objects and tested various treatment methods for consolidation and structural repair. Paraloid® B-67 in n-butanol and Aquazol® resins in isopropanol and distilled water were found to be effective in different roles, depending on the object and its state of degradation. This paper will discuss the factors that influenced decision-making for each object, with the aim of expanding interventive treatment strategies for cellulose nitrate objects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diamond‐like carbon (DLC) is an amorphous material widely used in industrial applications due to its chemical, mechanical, and tribological properties and, also, for decorative purposes. However, its low adhesion to ferrous alloys reduces its effectiveness in certain applications, necessitating the use of adhesion interlayers to reduce stresses at the interfaces and enhance the density of strong bonds. In this context, the factors that promote good adhesion in this system and specify the parameters must be understood in detail. Thus, the present study aims to assess the influence of the base pressure on the deposition of an amorphous silicon carbide adhesion interlayer between DLC coating and a ferrous alloy substrate. Microstructural, physicochemical, morphological, and mechanotribological analyses were conducted to understand the adhesion behavior in terms of structural and chemical aspects. In addition to the influence of the interlayer thickness, the elemental Si/C ratios and the relative oxygen content have an impact on the maximum load supported by the coatings, as well as the different delamination mechanisms generated in adhesion tests. Multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) are one of the most widely used and rapidly advancing chip electronic components for high frequency and high integration applications. It is challenging to develop low‐temperature sintering copper pastes for fabricating MLCC terminal electrodes with high adhesion and reliability. Herein, our work demonstrates a novel SrO‐ZnO‐B2O3‐SiO2 glass as a fluxing agent for lowering the sintering temperature of copper paste to enhance adhesion and reliability for MLCCs. It is found that Sr ions as glass modifiers can not only effectively lower the sintering temperature of the glass to 775°C, but also contribute a promotion to the thermal expansion coefficient, which originates from the conversion of the stable [ZnO4] network into a loose [ZnO6] network. The copper paste containing 12.5 SrO‐32.5 ZnO‐40 B2O3‐15 SiO2 (mol.%) was applied for practical terminal electrode sintering at 775°C, exhibiting a dense surface without cracks, integrated cross‐sectional morphology, and high adhesion force (10.2 LB). Furthermore, MLCCs showed lower square resistance (5.65 mΩ/sq), higher reliability in reflow soldering testing (265°C,110 cm/min), and resistance to soldering heat testing (235 ± 5°C, 30 s). This paper analyzes literature data on the influence of various factors affecting the strength and durability of adhesive bonds, as well as presents a characterization of the methods described in the literature for conducting relevant studies. It is shown that one of the main characteristics of adhesive joints is the interaction at the interface between the substrate and the adhesive. The adhesive capability of a sealant largely depends on the structure of the polymer component, as well as the presence of components in the sealant that enhance this property. The structure and condition of the substrate surface significantly affect the nature of the interaction between the adhesive and the substrate. Various methods are used to determine the strength of the adhesive bond, differing in the type of applied loads and the nature of the surface fracture. An important indicator is the determination of the wetting angle of the substrate by the sealant, which characterizes the surface energy. The durability of adhesive bonds is significantly influenced by environmental factors as well as operational conditions. This study aimed to explore the mechanism by which phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC) inhibited the adhesion and biofilm formation of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). PEITC exhibited antimicrobial efficacy against S. aureus, demonstrating a minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) of 1 mmol/L. PEITC exerted its antibacterial effect by disrupting cell membrane integrity, and it decreased total adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production after 1 and 4 h treatment. PEITC at 0.5 mmol/L increased the level of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) by 26.39% compared to control. The mature biofilm of S. aureus was destroyed by 86.4% after treatment with PEITC for 24 h. Adhesion tests revealed that PEITC at 0.5 mmol/L reduced 44.51% of the S. aureus that adhered to NCM460 cells. Furthermore, at the genetic level, PEITC significantly downregulated the related genes by 31.26% to 97.04%, including agrB, agrD, isdA, ebh, luxS, fnbA, and icaR. Moreover, PEITC markedly inhibited S. aureus proliferation in beef preserved at temperatures of 25 and 4 °C, respectively. In summary, the present study suggests that PEITC effectively inhibits the adhesion and biofilm formation of S. aureus by affecting the relevant genes of S. aureus and holds promise for microbial management in meat products. This paper evaluates the binder-aggregate interface during the service life of binders used in chip seal treatments in Brazil based on the perspective of adhesion/cohesion and aggregate loss distress. For this purpose, three materials were selected: two rapid-setting emulsions (unmodified and polymeric) largely recommended for the construction of these coats and a conventional asphalt cement binder of 50–70 penetration, similar to the binder used in the manufacturing of these emulsions. Samples of the binder were aged in the laboratory using two methods: (i) ultraviolet (UV) induced ageing, in a weathering chamber; and (ii) conventional PAV ageing. The bitumen bond strength (BBS) test was used to evaluate adhesion/cohesion in the binder-aggregate interface. It was possible to conclude that ageing mechanisms considerably affect the binders' composition which is reflected in the increase of pull-off tensile strength necessary to break the bond between the binder and aggregate. An adhesive solid-state fermentation (adSSF) mode was developed to produce Aspergillus niger conidia, which used a stainless-steel Dixon ring as the support and water-retaining adhesive to load nutritional media on its surface. To obtain high conidia yields, the components of the water-retaining adhesive were screened, optimized by single-factor optimization and response surface methodology, and the optimal dosages of the main components were: wheat bran powder 0.023 g·cm−3bed, cassava starch 0.0022 g·cm−3bed, and xanthan gum 0.0083 g·cm−3bed. The experimentally tested conidia yield was 4.2-fold that without water-retaining adhesive but was 3.7% lower than the maximum yield predicted by the model. The observed double-side growth of A. niger on the Dixon ring supports improved space utilization of the fermentation bed, and the void fraction can increase with the shrinkage of the gel layer. In 1.6 L tray reactors with three-point online temperature monitoring, the inner-bed temperature of adSSF was at most 4 °C lower than the adsorbed carrier solid-state fermentation (ACSSF) mode, and the conidia yield was 1.68 × 108conidia.cm−3bed, 61.5% higher than that of the ACSSF bed at the same time, but when the fermentation time was extended to 168 h, the conidia yield of the adSSF bed and ACSSF bed were close to each other. The results revealed that the high voidage of the adSSF bed was the main reason for low bed temperature, which can benefit the inner-bed natural convection and water evaporation. Freezing as an effective approach for food storage is commonly used in food industry. Notably, Escherichia coli O157:H7 can survive in a sublethally injured state after freezing and recover under suitable conditions, which is a great threat. This research was to investigate changes and mechanism in adhesion of sublethally injured E. coli O157:H7 during freezing and recovery. Adhesion on stainless steel or lettuce surface showed an increase after 16 h-freezing with sublethal ratio of more than 99%. Adhesion recovered to untreated level in recovery on lettuce while didn't recover on stainless steel. Motility decreased as freezing time increasing, reached minimum after 12 h-freezing and didn't repair to untreated level after recovery. Extracellular polymeric substances production and carbohydrate to protein ratio both reached minimum after 4 h-freezing and then increased in freezing-induced sublethally injured state. No significant change of LPS structural feature or gene expression was observed during injury and recovery. Besides, the expressions of flagella, pili and EPS related genes were all down-regulated during freezing while were up-regulated in recovery. Background: Terminalia chebula Retz, known as the King of Tibet, is considered a functional food in China, celebrated for its antioxidant, immune-modulating, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Chebulinic acid, derived from aqueous extracts of Terminalia chebula Retz, is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. However, its potential as an anti-Helicobacter pylori (HP) agent has not been fully explored. Methods: Herein, we extracted the main compound from Terminalia chebula Retz using a semi-preparative liquid chromatography (LC) system and identified compound 5 as chebulinic acid through Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-MS/MS (UPLC–MS/MS) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). To evaluate its role, we conducted minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) assays, scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging, inhibiting kinetics curves, urea fast test, cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, western blot analysis, griess reagent system, and molecular docking. Results: Our results showed that chebulinic acid effectively inhibited the growth of the HP strain ATCC 700392, damaged the HP structure, and exhibited selective antimicrobial activity without affecting normal epithelial cells GES-1. Importantly, it suppressed the expression of Cytotoxin-associated gene A (Cag A) protein, a crucial factor in HP infection. Molecular docking analysis predicted a strong affinity (−9.7  kcal/mol) between chebulinic acid and Cag A protein. Conclusion: Overall, our findings suggest that chebulinic acid acts as an antiadhesive agent, disrupting the adhesion of HP to host cells, which is a critical step in HP infection. Introduction: Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are complex structures released by activated neutrophils that may modulate different steps of the metastatic cascade. The aim of our study was to investigate how NETs can modulate the adhesion properties of cancer cells and whether cell exposure to NETs can activate the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) program thus enhancing the migratory and invasive properties of tumor cells. Materials and methods: Different cancer cell lines were subjected to a solid-phase adhesion assay using NET-coated plates with or without the addition of antibodies against α5β1 or CCDC25 receptor. After 1-4 h of incubation, adherent cells were expressed as the percentage of total cell number. To test EMT occurrence, cells were treated with NETs for up to 48 h and then the levels of E-cadherin, vimentin, Snail, Slug, Zeb 1 and Twist 1 along with levels of Notch 1 and cleaved Notch 1 were determined by western blotting. Untreated and NET-treated cells were subjected to migration assays using 24-multiwell plates with transwell and FBS as chemoattractant. Results: Cancer cell adhesion to NET-coated plates varied between 30% and 92.7% and was significantly higher than that obtained in uncoated plates. The addition of antibodies against α5β1 or CCDC25 caused a strong reduction of cell adhesion to NETs. The prolonged exposure of EGFR-driven cancer cell lines to NETs caused the activation of the EMT program through the upregulation and cleavage of Notch 1 and was confirmed by the enhanced expression of EMT markers. The consequent loss of the epithelial phenotype induced a strong reduction of the expression of the oncogene driver. Cell migration was significantly enhanced in NET-treated cells as compared to untreated cells. Discussion: Our findings reveal the dynamic role of NETs that may provide a DNA and fibronectin rich environment for binding of many cancer cells at distant sites where the prolonged exposure to NETs triggers the EMT through the activation of Notch 1 signaling pathway with the subsequent enhancement of migratory and invasive properties of cancer cells. Focal adhesion kinase (FAK) is an important non-receptor tyrosine kinase (nRTK) with crucial role in primary cell functions. Fundamental cellular processes, such as migration, adhesion, proliferation, and survival, are regulated by FAK. The tumorigenesis of FAK is very important since it is overexpressed in advanced cancers, causes malignant features and induces cancer metastasis. The available evidence proposes FAK as a promising target for cancer therapy. At the moment, there are no FAK inhibitors (FAKIs) in the market but several small molecule FAKIs have been developed and a few of them entered into clinical studies as anticancer agents. In spite of these achievements, development of selective and potent FAKIs may be partly hampered by the lack of crystallographic or structural data. This limitation could be resolved through proposing robust ligand–protein binding models to design new FAKIs. GSK2256098 is a small molecule ATP-competitive FAKI that undergoes clinical trials as a monotherapy or in combination with other medications against advanced solid tumors. GSK2256098 have been proven to be a selective and potent agent (IC50 0.4 nM) with respect to other clinical candidates. With regard to appropriate characteristics, this molecule is particularly amenable for performing computational modeling studies. In this study, we try to propose an applicable binding model of GSK2256098 inside the FAK kinase domain. For this purpose, molecular docking, all-atom 200-ns molecular dynamics simulations and free-energy-calculation methods were applied as consecutive modeling techniques. Atomic insight and dynamic evolution of the system were used to attain a stable binding mode and infer chemical interactions of GSK2256098 inside the kinase domain of FAK. Background: Microecological equilibrium is essential for human health. Previous research has demonstrated that Streptococcus strain A, the main bacterial group in the respiratory tract, can suppress harmful microbes and protect the body. In this study, Streptococcus strain D19T was isolated from the oral and pharyngeal cavities of healthy children. Its antibacterial mechanism against Acinetobacter baumannii was examined, as well as its potential to prevent inflammatory damage to cells. We evaluated the effect of the fermentation conditions of D19T on inhibition of Acinetobacter baumannii growth; Isolation and purification of antibacterial active components of strain D19T and molecular mechanism of inhibition of Acinetobacter baumannii; Molecular mechanism of D19T antibacterial protein reversing cellular inflammatory injury induced by Acinetobacter baumannii. Results: The supernatant of fermentation broth of Streptococcus D19T was the active component against Acinetobacter baumannii, but the bacteria had no antibacterial activity. The supernatant of D19T fermentation broth was precipitated by (NH4)2SO4 solution, and the protein was the active antibacterial component. After gel filtration chromatography and anion gel filtration chromatography, the molecular weight of antibacterial protein was 53kD. D19T antibacterial protein can improve cell membrane permeability, limit extracellular soluble protein release, inhibit Acinetobacter baumannii biofilm formation, and prevent Acinetobacter baumannii adhesion. Acinetobacter baumannii induces inflammatory damage to respiratory cells via ferroptosis, and the D19T antibacterial protein can counteract this damage, protecting the respiratory tract. Conclusion: Streptococcus strain D19T, as a potential probiotic, inhibits the growth of Acinetobacter baumannii and the inflammatory damage of respiratory cells, playing a protective role in human respiratory health. ABSTRACT Experimental studies on the cellular uptake of nanoparticles (NPs), useful for the investigation of NP‐based drug delivery systems, are often difficult to interpret due to the large number of parameters that can contribute to the phenomenon. It is therefore of great interest to identify insignificant parameters to reduce the number of variables used for the design of experiments. In this work, a model of the wrapping of elliptical NPs by the cell membrane is used to compare the influence of the aspect ratio of the NP, the membrane tension, the NP–membrane adhesion, and its variation during the interaction with the NP on the equilibrium state of the wrapping process. Several surrogate models, such as Kriging, Polynomial Chaos Expansion (PCE), and artificial neural networks (ANN) have been built and compared to emulate the computationally expensive model. Only the ANN‐based model outperformed the other approaches by providing much better predictivity metrics and could therefore be used to compute the sensitivity indices. Our results showed that the NP's aspect ratio, the initial NP–membrane adhesion, the membrane tension, and the delay for the increase of the NP–membrane adhesion after receptor dynamics are the main contributors to the cellular internalization of the NP, while the influence of other parameters is negligible. Implant surgeries are increasingly challenging due to their rising number. Achieving the desired biomaterial surface properties to ensure a strong bond with human tissue is a significant issue. This study investigates the influence of ultrasound (US) during the micro-arc oxidation (MAO) process on Ti13Zr13Nb bio-alloy, an area not previously explored, to enhance titanium alloy coatings' properties for biomedical applications. Porous calcium-phosphate-based coatings were successfully deposited on Ti13Zr13Nb using MAO and ultrasound micro-arc oxidation (UMAO). Various properties such as morphology, chemical composition, topography, wettability, surface free energy, thickness, adhesion to the substrate, as well as mechanical and corrosion characteristics were thoroughly analyzed. Cytocompatibility was assessed using human osteoblasts. Using US during the MAO process increased coating roughness (up to ~ 17%), core height (up to 22%), isotropy (up to 17%), thickness (up to ~ 46%), and hardness (up to ~ 18%), depending on MAO parameters and US mode. Optimal coating performance was achieved at 136 mA, 600 s, and a sinusoidal US setting, resulting in the highest isotropy (~ 79%) and rutile quantity (2.6%), the lowest elastic modulus (~ 57 GPa), and the contact angle of ~ 70°, all of which could have contributed to enhancing osteoblast viability in vitro. This study assessed the bond strength of resin‐based restorative materials to fast‐setting calcium silicate cement (Aarhus Uinversity, Denmark) when treated with each of two one‐bottle universal adhesive systems. The cement surface (N = 256) was treated with a self‐priming adhesive and a self‐etch phosphate monomer‐containing adhesive with and without etching of the cement surface. Specimens then received either resin composite or compomer restorative materials (n = 32). The bond strength was measured after 1 day and 1500 thermocycles (n = 16). The failure type was visually inspected. The cement‐adhesive‐restorative material interface was visualized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The data were analyzed using multiple linear regression. Restorative material type, resin adhesive system, and thermocycling had a statistically significant effect on the bond strength. Compomer restorative material and self‐etch universal adhesive system demonstrated statistically significantly higher bond strength values to fast‐setting calcium silicate cement, predominantly exhibiting cement cohesive failure. Etching the cement surface enhanced the bond strength of the self‐priming universal adhesive. Thermocycling significantly reduced the bond strength. SEM showed self‐etch universal adhesive seemingly diffused over the etched cement surface compared to other groups. Introduction: Currently, there are few investigations on the effect of a synthetic exogenous quorum sensing (QS) agonist on the bioleaching rate of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans (A. thiooxidans). Methods: We created AHL (N-acyl-homoserine lactone) analogues and investigated their effects on A. thiooxidans biofilm formation, adsorption kinetics, bioleaching, and mechanism. Results: The findings revealed that N-(3-thiolactone)- dodecylamine (Y3) significantly increased the biofilm formation of A. thiooxidans in 96-well plates and sulfur sheets. Adsorption tests revealed that Y3 increased the adhesion rate, adsorption constant, and adsorption efficiency. Bioleaching tests indicated that Y3 boosted bioleaching efficiency, with Ni2+ and Cu2+ bioleaching rates increasing by 49.13% and 33.03%, respectively. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that Y3 increased genes associated with QS pathways and biofilm formation, particularly afeI, which was dramatically elevated 42 times. Discussion: The study laid the groundwork for a better understanding of the mechanics of A. thiooxidans biofilm formation, which could help improve the potential application of A. thiooxidans in bioleaching. During inflammation, human neutrophils engage b2-integrins to migrate from the blood circulation to inflammatory sites with high cytokine but low oxygen concentrations. We tested the hypothesis that the inhibition of prolyl hydroxylase domain-containing enzymes (PHDs), cytokines, and b2-integrins cooperates in HIF pathway activation in neutrophils. Using either the PHD inhibitor roxadustat (ROX) (pseudohypoxia) or normobaric hypoxia to stabilize HIF, we observed HIF1a protein accumulation in adherent neutrophils. Several inflammatory mediators did not induce HIF1a protein but provided additive or even synergistic signals (e.g., GM-CSF) under pseudohypoxic and hypoxic conditions. Importantly, and in contrast to adherent neutrophils, HIF1a protein expression was not detected in strictly suspended neutrophils despite PHD enzyme inhibition and the presence of inflammatory mediators. Blocking b2- integrins in adherent and activating b2-integrins in suspension neutrophils established the indispensability of b2-integrins for increasing HIF1a protein. Using GM-CSF as an example, increased HIF1a mRNA transcription via JAK2- STAT3 was necessary but not sufficient for HIF1a protein upregulation. Importantly, we found that b2-integrins led to HIF1a mRNA translation through the phosphorylation of the essential translation initiation factors eIF4E and 4EBP1. Finally, pseudohypoxic and hypoxic conditions inducing HIF1a consistently delayed apoptosis in adherent neutrophils on fibronectin under low serum concentrations. Pharmacological HIF1a inhibition reversed delayed apoptosis, supporting the importance of this pathway for neutrophil survival under conditions mimicking extravascular sites. We describe a novel b2-integrincontrolled mechanism of HIF1a stabilization in human neutrophils. This research presents a comparative analysis of the fracture surfaces of adhesively bonded dissimilar single lap joints (DSLJs) and investigates the effect of nanosilica (NS) additives on their fracture behavior and performance. The study focuses on DSLJs composed of aluminum (Al), stainless steel (SS), copper (Cu), and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) adherends bonded with an epoxy adhesive. The fracture surface of DSLJs is further analyzed by introducing two parameters: fractional total fracture area (aT) and the surface sensitivity of each adherend (aSurface). These parameters serve as benchmarks to predict the final load capacity of the adhesive joints. It is found that a decrease in aT and an increase in the sensitivity of the adherend with a lower Young's modulus lead to higher load capacity. Tensile tests revealed that incorporating NS up to a critical weight percentage of 0.6 wt% improves the proposed surface parameters and significantly contributes to higher levels of load capacity and absorbing greater amounts of energy to failure. Furthermore, numerical simulations offer insights into stress distribution and the mechanism of plastic deformation propagation, providing additional support for the experimental findings. To quantify the influence of absorbed water in PA6 on the pre-treatment and bonding process, an unfilled and unreinforced PA6 material is investigated in a dried and saturated state. The material is pre-treated by atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) with varying jet distances. The surfaces are investigated by contact angle measurements, DSC and FTIR to detect molecular and morphological changes in the surface. To evaluate the bonding strength, samples are bonded with a two-component polyurethane adhesive and a two-component acrylate adhesive and tested in a lap shear and a tensile configuration. The results show that water content has a significant influence on the effectivity of the pre-treatment process and the resulting bonding strength and failure mechanism. The adhesion is majorly affected, however these effects do not influence the macroscopic wetting behavior and cannot be measured in contact angles. FTIR spectra and DSC scans do not show significant changes in molecular groups or crystallinity that would explain the observed adhesion improvement in dried samples. The immobilization design strategy plays an important role in biosensor development and its sensing performance. Both adsorption (physisorption) and cross-linker functionalization (chemisorption) are common approaches for immobilizing a bioreceptor layer. In this work, these two approaches were studied and compared, envisaging a functional and strongly attached bioreceptor layer onto sputtered Au–TiO2 thin films. DSP cross-linker (Lomant's reagent) was used in the thin film's functionalization, and the effect of different concentrations on the development of an adhesion layer was investigated. Surface morphology analysis of functionalized thin films suggested the development of uniformly coated self-assembled layers. However, DSP islands with a fractal structure were found for a concentration of 4 mg ml−1. Infrared spectroscopy confirmed the cross-linker functionalization at the thin film's surface. Confocal microscopy of immobilized fluorescent antibodies revealed that DSP islands improve the chemical surface area available for bioreceptor immobilization. Studies utilizing electron microscopy and live fluorescence microscopy have significantly enhanced our understanding of the molecular mechanisms that regulate junctional dynamics during homeostasis, development and disease. To fully grasp the enormous complexity of cell--cell adhesions, it is crucial to study the nanoscale architectures of tight junctions, adherens junctions and desmosomes. It is important to integrate these junctional architectures with the membrane morphology and cellular topography in which the junctions are embedded. In this Review, we explore new insights from studies using super-resolution and volume electron microscopy into the nanoscale organization of these junctional complexes as well as the roles of the junction-associated cytoskeleton, neighboring organelles and the plasma membrane. Furthermore, we provide an overview of junction- and cytoskeletal-related biosensors and optogenetic probes that have contributed to these advances and discuss how these microscopy tools enhance our understanding of junctional dynamics across cellular environments. The focus of this research is to examine the feasibility of using laser texturing as a method for surface preparation prior to thermal spraying. The experimental part includes the thermal spraying of a Stellite 6 coating by High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) technology on laser-textured substrates. The thermal spraying of this coating was deposited both on conventional substrate material (low carbon steel) and on substrates that had been previously heat treated (nitrided steel). The properties of the coatings were analysed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy (OM) and Raman spectroscopy. Adhesion was assessed through a tensile adhesion test. The results showed the usability of laser texturing in the case of carbon steel, which was comparable or even better than traditional grit blasting. For nitrided steel, the problem remains with the hardness and brittleness of the nitrided layer, which allows for the propagation of brittle cracks near the interface and thus reduces the adhesion strength.
