Abstract

In this article we investigate $^{40,48}$Ca+$^{40,48}$Ca peripheral and semi-peripheral reactions at 35 MeV/nucleon. Data were obtained using the unique coupling of the VAMOS high acceptance spectrometer and the INDRA charged particle multidetector.The spectrometer allowed high resolution measurement of charge, mass and velocity of the cold projectile-like fragment (PLF), while the INDRA detector recorded coincident charged particles with nearly $4\pi$ acceptance.The measured isotopic composition of the PLF identified in VAMOS and the average light charged particle (LCP) multiplicities are promising observables to study the isospin diffusion.The detection of the PLF in coincidence with LCP allows the reconstruction of the mass, charge and excitation energy of the associated initial quasi-projectile nuclei (QP), as well as the extraction of apparent temperatures.We investigate the suitability of the isoscaling method with the PLF and the experimental reconstructed QP.The extracted $\alpha$ and $\Delta$ isoscaling parameters present a dependence on the considered system combination that could justify their use as a surrogate for isospin asymmetry in isospin transport studies.The reconstruction of the QP allows to observe an evolution of the $\alpha/\Delta$ with the size of the QP, the latter being consistent with a strong surface contribution to the symmetry energy term in finite nuclei. This leads to the conclusion that the reconstruction of the primary source is mandatory for the study of the symmetry energy term based on the isoscaling method for such reactions.

Abstract

The results of the analysis of the reactions 78,86Kr +40,48 Ca at 10 AMeV are presented. The experiment was performed at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania by using the 4π multidetector CHIMERA, with beams delivered by the Superconductive Cyclotron. The competition among the various disintegration paths and in particular the isospin effects on the decay modes of the produced composite systems are investigated; this provides information about fundamental nuclear quantities such as level density, fission barrier and viscosity. Different isotopic composition and relative richness are observed among the reaction products of the two systems. An odd-even staggering effect is present in the charge distributions, in particular for the light fragments produced by the neutron-poor system. The kinematical characteristics of the IMF seem to indicate a high degree of the relaxation of the formed system. Besides, global features analysis seems to show some differences in the contribution arising from the various reaction mechanisms for the two reactions.

Abstract

The study of the decay modes competition of the compound systems produced in the collisions 78Kr+40Ca and 86Kr+48Ca at 10AMeV is presented. In particular, the N/Z entrance channel influence on the decay paths of the compound systems, directly connected to the isospin influence, is investigated. The experiment was performed at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania by using the 4π multi-detector CHIMERA. Charge, mass, angular distributions and kinematical features of the reaction products were studied. The analysis shows some differences in the contribution arising from the various reaction mechanisms for the neutron poor and neutron rich systems. Comparison with theoretical statistical and dynamical models are presented for the two systems. Besides a study of the influence of the energy on the entrance channel is performed for the 78Kr+40Ca reaction, by comparing the results of this experiment to those obtained for the same system at 5.5 AMeV with the INDRA device at GANIL.

Abstract

The fragmentation of quasi-projectiles from the nuclear reaction 40Ca+12C at 25 MeV/nucleon was used to produce α-emission sources. From a careful selection of these sources provided by a complete detection and from comparisons with models of sequential and simultaneous decays, strong indications in favour of α-particle clustering in excited 16O, 20Ne and 24Mg are reported.

Abstract

The present status and the perspectives of the FAZIA project are presented. The main achievements in terms of identification thresholds and isotopic resolution are discussed, together with the adopted technical solutions. The detector is particularly well suited for the investigation of isospin transport phenomena at intermediate beam energies; perspectives to reduce the identification thresholds to cope with lower energy ISOL beams are briefly introduced. Some experimental results concerning isospin transport effects obtained with a test telescope are presented. The study of isospin transport phenomena can give information on the symmetry energy term of the nuclear equation of state by comparing the experimental results on isospin related observables with the predictions of transport codes.

Abstract

A completely exclusive experiment was performed by the INDRA collaboration to study the isospin dependence of the level density parameter. Over a large N/Z range, the fusion-evaporation charged products of 34,36,40Ar+58,60,64Ni reactions were measured and identified both in charge and mass by coupling INDRA and VAMOS spectrometer. Preliminary results obtained by combining data of both detectors are presented for the 36Ar+58Ni at 13.3 A MeV. The analysis method of relevant observables for such an ambitious investigation are discussed and the progress of the data analysis are reviewed.

Abstract

A study of the identification properties and of the energy response of a Si-Si-CsI(Tl) ΔE-E telescope exploiting a partially depleted second Si stage has been performed. Five different bias voltages have been applied to the second stage of the telescope, one corresponding to full depletion, the others associated with a depleted layer ranging from 60% to 90% of the detector thickness. Fragment identification has been obtained using either the ΔE-E technique or the Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA). Charge collection efficiency has been evaluated. The ΔE-E performance is not affected by incomplete depletion. Isotopic separation capability improves at lower bias voltages with respect to full depletion, though charge identification thresholds increase.

Abstract

Decay modes of excited compound systems 118Ba and 134Ba, produced respectively in the 78Kr+40Ca and 86Kr+48Ca collisions at 10 A·MeV, are investigated. In particular, the competition between the various disintegration path of medium mass compound nuclei, formed by fusion processes, the production of the so referred Intermediate Mass Fragments (IMF), and the isospin dependence of the decay process are studied. Data were taken at the INFN-Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) by using the CHIMERA array. Data analysis is in progress; a first indication on the average-energy angular distributions suggests pre-equilibrium effects affecting the data and the presence of isotopical effects.

Abstract

Preliminary outcome of ISODEC experiment, performed at INFNLNS with the CHIMERA array, are presented. Disintegration path dependence on the entrance-channel N/Z ratios (isospin asymmetries) for the reactions 78Kr+40Ca and 86Kr+48Ca at 10 A·MeV, which give origin to the intermediate systems 118Ba and 134Ba, is being investigated. Staggering effects seem to be present as it was the case of a complementary measurement performed at GANIL at lower energy, i.e. 78,82Kr+40Ca at 5.5 A·MeV.

Abstract

The first results of the ISODEC experiment, performed at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) by using the CHIMERA detector, are presented. The principal aim of this experiment is to explore the isospin dependence of the decay modes of medium mass compound nuclei formed by fusion processes, by studying the competition between the various disintegration modes of 118,134Ba nuclei produced in the reactions 78Kr+40Ca and 86Kr+48Ca at 10 AMeV. The studied systems allow in fact to produce compound nuclei with a large variation of N/Z, and such data will also provide new constraint on sophisticated models attempting to describe statistical and/or dynamical properties of excited nuclei. The experiment complements data already obtained at 5.5 AMeV for 78,82Kr+40Ca reactions, previously realized at GANIL by using the INDRA detector. First results show a strong staggering effects in the Z distributions, as well as different isotopic composition and enrichment for the reaction products in the two systems.

Abstract

The cross section, kinetic energy distribution and angular distribution of fragments with atomic number 3 ≤ Z ≤ 28 emitted in the reaction 78Kr + 40Ca at the bombarding energy of 5.5 MeV/nucleon and coincidence between light charged particles and fragments were measured by means of the 4π-INDRA array to study the decay mechanism of medium mass excited nucleus. Global features indicate a high degree of relaxation and are compatible with a binary fission from compound nucleus. The mean value of the kinetic energy distributions of fragments indicates dominance of Coulomb interaction, while the width of the distribution signals large fluctuations. Inclusive cross-section distributions of fragments with charge 3 ≤ Z ≤ 28 are bell-shaped and a strong even-odd-staggering (o-es) is observed for 3 ≤ Z ≤ 12. Coincidence measurements suggest that the light partners in very asymmetric fission are emitted at excitation energies below the particle emission thresholds. Data were confronted to the predictions of statistical model describing the decay of compound nuclei by emission of light particles and fragments. Calculations assuming spherical fission fragments and finite-range liquid drop fission barriers are not able to explain the experimental features. Attempts have been made to improve the agreement with experimental data. The analysis indicates the strong influence of the shape parameterization of the potential energy surface in describing the fission process of intermediate mass compound nuclei.

Abstract

The influence of the neutron richness on binary decays is investigated in 78,82Kr+ 40Ca reactions at 5.5 MeV/A incident energy. Kinetic energy distributions and angular distributions of fragments with atomic number 6 ≤ Z ≤ 28 were measured using the 4π-INDRA array. Global features are compatible with an emission from a long-lived system. The yields around the symmetric splitting are about 30The persistence of strong structural effects is evidenced from elemental cross-sections of the light fragments. The cross-sections for odd-Z fragments are higher for the neutron rich CN while cross-sections for even-Z fragments are higher for the neutron poor CN. Calculations assuming two different potential energy surfaces are presented.

Abstract

We report experimental signals of Bose-Einstein condensation in the decay of hot Ca projectile-like sources produced in mid-peripheral collisions at sub-Fermi energies. The experimental setup, constituted by the coupling of the INDRA 4$\pi$ detector array to the forward angle VAMOS magnetic spectrometer, allowed us to reconstruct the mass, charge and excitation energy of the decaying hot projectile-like sources. Furthermore, by means of quantum fluctuation analysis techniques, temperatures and mean volumes per particle "as seen by" bosons and fermions separately are correlated to the excitation energy of the reconstructed system. The obtained results are consistent with the production of dilute mixed (bosons/fermions) systems, where bosons experience a smaller volume as compared to the surrounding fermionic gas. Our findings recall similar phenomena observed in the study of boson condensates in atomic traps., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett. (december 2014)

Abstract

An analysis of experimental data from the inverse-kinematics ISODEC experiment on 78Kr+40Ca reaction at a bombarding energy of 10 AMeV has revealed signatures of a hitherto unknown reaction mechanism, intermediate between the classical damped binary collisions and fusion-fission, but also substantially different from what is being termed in the literature as fast fission or quasi fission. These signatures point to a scenario where the system fuses transiently while virtually equilibrating mass asymmetry and energy and, yet, keeping part of the energy stored in a collective shock-imparted and, possibly, angular momentum bearing form of excitation. Subsequently the system fissions dynamically along the collision or shock axis with the emerging fragments featuring a broad mass spectrum centered around symmetric fission, relative velocities somewhat higher along the fission axis than in transverse direction, and virtually no intrinsic spin. The class of massasymmetric fission events shows a distinct preference for the more massive fragments to proceed along the beam direction, a characteristic reminiscent of that reported earlier for dynamic fragmentation of projectile-like fragments alone and pointing to the memory of the initial mass and velocity distribution., Comment: 5 PAGES, 6 FIGURES

Abstract

A study of identification properties of a Si-Si DE-E telescope exploiting an underdepleted residual-energy detector has been performed. Five different bias voltages have been used, one corresponding to full depletion, the others associated with a depleted layer ranging from 90% to 60% of the detector thickness. Fragment identification has been performed using either the DE-E technique or Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA). Both detectors are reverse mounted: particles enter from the low field side, to enhance the PSA performance. The achieved charge and mass resolution has been quantitatively expressed using a Figure of Merit (FoM). Charge collection efficiency has been evaluated and the possibility of energy calibration corrections has been considered. We find that the DE-E performance is not affected by incomplete depletion even when only 60% of the wafer is depleted. Isotopic separation capability improves at lower bias voltages with respect to full depletion, though charge identification thresholds are higher than at full depletion. Good isotopic identification via PSA has been obtained from a partially depleted detector whose doping uniformity is not good enough for isotopic identification at full depletion., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures 5 tables; submitted to European Physical Journal A

Abstract

The equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter is still controversial, as predictions at subsaturation as well as above normal density widely diverge. We discuss several experimental results measured in heavy-ion collisions with the INDRA array in the incident energy range 5-80 MeV/nucleon. In particular an estimate of the density dependence of the symmetry energy is derived from isospin diffusion results compared with a transport code: the potential part of the symmetry energy linearly increases with the density. We demonstrate that isospin equilibrium is reached in mid-central collisions for the two reactions Ni+Au at 52 MeV/nucleon and Xe+Sn at 32 MeV/nucleon. Abstract

In 129 Xe+ nat Sn central collisions from 8 to 25 MeV/A, the three-fragment exit channel occurs with a significant cross section. We show that these fragments arise from two successive binary splittings of a heavy composite system. The sequence of fragment production is determined. Strong Coulomb proximity effects are observed in the three-fragment final state. A comparison with Coulomb trajec-tory calculations shows that the time scale between the consecutive break-ups decreases with increasing bombarding energy, becoming quasi-simultaneous above excitation energy E * = 4.0$\pm$0.5 MeV/A. This transition from sequential to simultaneous break-up was interpreted as the signature of the onset of multifragmentation for the three-fragment exit channel in this system., Comment: 12 pages; 13 Figures; 4 Table; Accepted for publication in Physical Review C

Abstract

Simulations based on experimental data obtained from multifragmenting quasi-fused nuclei produced in central $^{129}$Xe + $^{nat}$Sn collisions have been used to deduce event by event freeze-out properties in the thermal excitation energy range 4-12 AMeV [Nucl. Phys. A809 (2008) 111]. From these properties and the temperatures deduced from proton transverse momentum fluctuations, constrained caloric curves have been built. At constant average volumes caloric curves exhibit a monotonic behaviour whereas for constrained pressures a backbending is observed. Abstract

Distributions of the largest fragment charge, Zmax, in multifragmentation reactions around the Fermi energy can be decomposed into a sum of a Gaussian and a Gumbel distribution, whereas at much higher or lower energies one or the other distribution is asymptotically dominant. We demonstrate the same generic behavior for the largest cluster size in critical aggregation models for small systems, in or out of equilibrium, around the critical point. By analogy with the time-dependent irreversible aggregation model, we infer that Zmax distributions are characteristic of the multifragmentation time-scale, which is largely determined by the onset of radial expansion in this energy range., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters on 8/4/2013

Abstract

Isospin e ffects on multifragmentation properties were studied thanks to nuclear collisions between di fferent isotopes of xenon beams and tin targets. It is shown that, in central collisions leading to multifragmentation, the mean number of fragments and their mean kinetic energy increase with the neutron-richness of the total system. Comparisons with a stochastic transport model allow to attribute the multiplicity increase to the multifragmentation stage, before secondary decay. The total charge bound in fragments is proposed as an alternate variable to quantify preequilibrium emission and to investigate symmetry energy e ffects., Comment: 10 pages. 6 figures. Abstract

Decay modes of excited nuclei are investigated in $^{78,82}$Kr + $^{40}$Ca reactions at 5.5 MeV/nucleon. Charged products were measured by means of the $4\pi$ INDRA array. Kinetic-energy spectra and angular distributions of fragments with atomic number 3 $\le Z \le$ 28 indicate a high degree of relaxation and are compatible with a fission-like phenomenon. Persistence of structure effects is evidenced from elemental cross-sections ($\sigma_{Z}$) as well as a strong odd-even-staggering (o-e-s) of the light-fragment yields. The magnitude of the staggering does not significantly depend on the neutron content of the emitting system. Fragment-particle coincidences suggest that the light partners in very asymmetric fission are emitted either cold or at excitation energies below the particle emission thresholds. The evaporation residue cross-section of the $^{78}$Kr + $^{40}$Ca reaction is slightly higher than the one measured in $^{82}$Kr + $^{40}$Ca reaction. The fission-like component is larger by $\sim$ 25% for the reaction having the lowest neutron-to-proton ratio. These experimental features are confronted to the predictions of theoretical models. The Hauser-Feshbach approach including the emission of fragments up to $Z$ = 14 in their ground states as well as excited states does not account for the main features of $\sigma_{Z}$. For both reactions, the transition-state formalism reasonably reproduces the $Z$-distribution of the fragments with charge 12 $\le Z \le$ 28. However, this model strongly overestimates the light-fragment cross-sections and does not explain the o-e-s of the yields for 6 $\le Z \le$ 10. The shape of the whole $Z$-distribution and the o-e-s of the light-fragment yields are satisfactorily reproduced within the dinuclear system framework which treats the competition between evaporation, fusion-fission and quasifission processes. The model suggests that heavy fragments come mainly from quasifission while light fragments are predominantly populated by fusion. An underestimation of the cross sections for 16 $\le Z \le$ 22 could signal a mechanism in addition to the capture process., Comment: 2 tables, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review C

Abstract

International audience; The study of the decay modes competition of the compound systems produced in the collisions 78Kr+40Ca and 86Kr+48Ca at 10 MeV/A is presented. In particular, the N/Z entrance channel influence on the decay paths of the compound systems, directly connected to the isospin influence, is investigated. The experiment was performed at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania by using the 4π multi-detector CHIMERA. Charge, mass, angular distributions and kinematical features of the reaction products were studied. The analysis shows some differences in the contribution arising from the various reaction mechanisms for the neutron-poor and neutron-rich systems.

Abstract

Nuclear reactions between medium-mass nuclei at low bombarding energy are characterized by the competition between binary and evaporation processes in the compound nucleus decay. A study of the influence of the neutron richness of the entrance channel on the decay paths of the compound nuclei formed in the Kr-78 + Ca-40 and Kr-86 + Ca-48 at 10 MeV/A is presented. The experiment has been performed at Laboratori Nazionali del Sud by using the CHIMERA 4 pi multi-detector for charged particles. The kinematical characteristics of the two reactions support the conclusion of a production of the IMFs via long-lived system and the global features suggest a different competition among the various reaction channels. The cross sections of the mechanisms responsible for the fragments production have been extracted. Besides the results relative to the n-poorsystem are compared to those obtained at GANIL, performed at 5.5 A MeV, in order to study the energy influence on the mechanisms.

Abstract

International audience; Nuclear reactions between medium-mass nuclei at low bombarding energy are characterized by the competition between binary and evaporation processes in the compound nucleus decay. A study of the influence of the neutron richness of the entrance channel on the decay paths of the compound nuclei formed in the 78Kr + 40Ca and 86Kr + 48Ca at 10 MeV/A is presented. The experiment has been performed at Laboratori Nazionali del Sud by using the CHIMERA 4π multidetector for charged particles. The kinematical characteristics of the two reactions support the conclusion of a production of the IMFs via long-lived system and the global features suggest a different competition among the various reaction channels. The cross sections of the mechanisms responsible for the fragments production have been extracted. Besides the results relative to the n-poor system are compared to those obtained at GANIL, performed at 5.5 A MeV, in order to study the energy influence on the mechanisms.

Abstract

The de-excitation of medium mass nuclei 118,134Ba produced in fusion process of 78,86Kr on 40,48Ca targets at 10 AMeV is studied, in order to investigate the isospin dependence of the decay modes; the neutron enrichment of the compound nuclei is in fact expected to play an important role on the emission mechanisms, providing crucial information on fundamental nuclear quantities such as level density, fission barrier, viscosity and symmetry energy. The experiment was performed at INFN-LNS with the 4π multidetector for charged particles CHIMERA, used for the first time in this low energy regime, thanks to a suitable Pulse Shape Discrimination method for charge identification applied to the silicon detectors. Abstract

Decay modes of excited nuclei are investigated in $^{78,82}$Kr + $^{40}$Ca reactions at 5.5 MeV/nucleon. Charged products were measured by means of the $4\pi$ INDRA array. Kinetic-energy spectra and angular distributions of fragments with atomic number 3 $\le Z \le$ 28 indicate a high degree of relaxation and are compatible with a fission-like phenomenon. Persistence of structure effects is evidenced from elemental cross-sections ($\sigma_{Z}$) as well as a strong odd-even-staggering (o-e-s) of the light-fragment yields. The magnitude of the staggering does not significantly depend on the neutron content of the emitting system. Fragment-particle coincidences suggest that the light partners in very asymmetric fission are emitted either cold or at excitation energies below the particle emission thresholds. The evaporation residue cross-section of the $^{78}$Kr + $^{40}$Ca reaction is slightly higher than the one measured in $^{82}$Kr + $^{40}$Ca reaction. The fission-like component is larger by $\sim$ 25% for the reaction having the lowest neutron-to-proton ratio. These experimental features are confronted to the predictions of theoretical models. The Hauser-Feshbach approach including the emission of fragments up to $Z$ = 14 in their ground states as well as excited states does not account for the main features of $\sigma_{Z}$. For both reactions, the transition-state formalism reasonably reproduces the $Z$-distribution of the fragments with charge 12 $\le Z \le$ 28. However, this model strongly overestimates the light-fragment cross-sections and does not explain the o-e-s of the yields for 6 $\le Z \le$ 10. The shape of the whole $Z$-distribution and the o-e-s of the light-fragment yields are satisfactorily reproduced within the dinuclear system framework which treats the competition between evaporation, fusion-fission and quasifission processes. The model suggests that heavy fragments come mainly from quasifission while light fragments are predominantly populated by fusion. An underestimation of the cross sections for 16 $\le Z \le$ 22 could signal a mechanism in addition to the capture process., Comment: 2 tables, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review C

Abstract

In this work we study the decay modes of excited nuclei formed in 78,82Kr+40Ca reactions at 5.5 AMeV. The 4p INDRA array was used to measure light charged particles, evaporation residues and fragments with atomic number 3 ≤ Z ≥ 28. In both reactions, fragment characteristics are compatible with a fissionlike phenomenon. Persistence of structure effects is evidenced from a strong odd-even staggering of the light-fragment (6 ≤ Z ≥ 11) yields. The magnitude of the staggering does not significantly depend on the neutron content of the system. Light particle-fragment coincidences suggest that those fragments are excited below the particle emission thresholds. For the neutron-poor system, the evaporation residue cross-section is slightly higher and the fission-like component is larger by ~ 25%. These features were confronted to the predictions of statistical and dynamical models. For both reactions, the transition-state formalism reasonably reproduces the Z-distribution around the symmetry but strongly overestimates the light-fragment cross-sections and failed to explain the staggering of their yields. The Z-distribution shape and the staggering of the light-fragment yields are satisfactorily reproduced within the dinuclear system framework which associates the heavy fragments to quasifission while light fragments are predominantly populated by fusion. However, none of the models are able to reproduce the characteristics of the kinetic energy spectra. This would indicate the need to improve the description of large deformation experienced by the system at the separation phase.; Dans ce travail, nous étudions la désexcitation des noyaux formés dans les réactions 78,82Kr+40Ca à 5,5 AMeV.
