This paper presents the analysis of electricity transmitted and demand on Nigeria's electricity grid system from the year 2018 to 2020 to give the present progress of the electricity system in Nigeria. The daily electricity generated and transmitted data, daily distribution companies (DISCOs) electricity demand and consumption data, and data of transmission lines connected to other neighbouring countries (international lines) within the year 2018 and 2020 were used for the analysis. Also, the extrapolation of the monthly energy of each of the data obtained was computed. The analysis was done and graphs and results obtained showed that daily average electricity day-ahead demand by DISCOs varied majorly between 3.5GW to 4GW with a corresponding increase above 4GW and the total daily day-ahead electricity demand by DISCOs varied majorly between 80GW and 90GW from 2018 to 2020. But despite this demand, the study showed that distribution companies did not at any time pick up to their declared load demand despite being the major electricity stakeholder in electricity delivery to consumers. Also, some generating station units were not generating to their capacity due to fault and gas constraints and some generating stations were connected to the grid without using free governor mode (control required for the generating units to respond to the state of electricity demand on the grid in real-time). The study recommends that the government should ensure proper monitoring and impose necessary sanctions if needs be on any electricity stakeholders and participants who violate the Nigeria Electricity Supply Market Rules for effective and the Nigeria grid code created for efficient power delivery. The government should, as a matter of urgency, start the expansion of her generating stations as well as developing new ones considering other sources for power generation such as wind and solar which are predominately abundant in the northern part of the country.

Quantum dots (QDs) are engineered semiconductor nanocrystals with unique fluorescent, quantum confinement, and quantum yield properties, making them valuable in a range of commercial and consumer imaging, display, and lighting technologies. Production and usage of QDs are increasing, which increases the probability of these nanoparticles entering the environment at various phases of their life cycle. This review discusses the major types and applications of QDs, their potential environmental exposures, fates, and adverse effects on organisms. For most applications, release to the environment is mainly expected to occur during QD synthesis and end-product manufacturing since encapsulation of QDs in these devices prevents release during normal use or landfilling. In natural waters, the fate of QDs is controlled by water chemistry, light intensity, and the physicochemical properties of QDs. Research on the adverse effects of QDs primarily focuses on sublethal endpoints rather than acute toxicity, and the differences in toxicity between pristine and weathered nanoparticles are highlighted. A proposed oxidative stress adverse outcome pathway framework demonstrates the similarities among metallic and carbon-based QDs that induce reactive oxygen species formation leading to DNA damage, reduced growth, and impaired reproduction in several organisms. To accurately evaluate environmental risk, this review identifies critical data gaps in QD exposure and ecological effects, and provides recommendations for future research. Future QD regulation should emphasize exposure and sublethal effects of metal ions released as the nanoparticles weather under environmental conditions. To date, human exposure to QDs from the environment and resulting adverse effects has not been reported.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are found in wastewater, and thus, the environment. In this study, current knowledge about the occurrence and fate of PPCPs in aquatic systems-including wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and natural waters around the world-is critically reviewed to inform the state of the science and highlight existing knowledge gaps. Excretion by humans is the primary route of PPCPs entry into municipal wastewater systems, but significant contributions also occur through emissions from hospitals, PPCPs manufacturers, and agriculture. Abundance of PPCPs in raw wastewater is influenced by several factors, including the population density and demography served by WWTPs, presence of hospitals and drugs manufacturers in the sewershed, disease burden of the population served, local regulations, and climatic conditions. Based on the data obtained from WWTPs, analgesics, antibiotics, and stimulants (e.g., caffeine) are the most abundant PPCPs in raw wastewater. In conventional WWTPs, most removal of PPCPs occurs during secondary treatment, and overall removal exceeds 90% for treatable PPCPs. Regardless, the total PPCP mass discharged with effluent by an average WWTP into receiving waters (7.35-20,160 g/day) is still considerable, because potential adverse effects of some PPCPs (such as ibuprofen) on aquatic organisms occur within measured concentrations found in surface waters.

Nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) and sulfidated nanoscale zerovalent iron (S-nZVI) have been increasingly studied for heavy metal removal in the subsurface. However, a comprehensive comparison of the effectiveness of the technologies and the stability of derived metal-adsorbed composites is lacking. In this study, we evaluated the colloidal stability and transport of nZVI, S-nZVI and S-nZVI modified with nanosized silica (FeSSi). Furthermore, we monitored the metal immobilization performance of the three nanoparticles (NPs) under anoxic conditions in synthetic groundwater for 30 days. The NP-metal composites were thereafter discharged into a river water and metal remobilization was monitored for 20 days. Sulfidation improved the colloidal stability of nZVI in both simple media and in natural waters, although a lower initial agglomeration rate constant (ka) was observed in unmodified nZVI at acidic pH. The transport of nZVI in saturated soil column was enhanced with sulfidation due to decreased electrostatic attraction between the NPs and sand. The three NPs sequestered more than 80 % of Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+ and Cr2O72- from groundwater. Among the three NPs tested, S-nZVI had a slightly higher removal capacity for metals than nZVI in synthetic groundwater and the chemical stability of metal-S-nZVI composites upon discharge into river water was the highest.

Artificial surfaces in coastal waters and offshore oceans, including boat hulls, docks, and offshore structures, are invariably colonized, or fouled, by a host of sessile species known collectively as fouling communities. Fouling has great economic impacts on shipping and other marine industries and plays an important role in the spread of marine invasive species across the globe. The main strategy to prevent fouling of artificial surfaces is application of antifouling coatings containing varying concentrations and mixtures of biocides. Presently, copper and zinc are popular antifouling biocides, and the latter is gaining in usage due to the known toxic characteristics of copper in the marine environment and consequent regulation and consumer opinion. Nanomaterials, including Cu and ZnO nanoparticles, have been explored as a way to efficiently deliver biocides from coating matrices. Here, we examine the efficacy and biocide release characteristics of several copper- and zinc-based antifouling coatings, including formulations containing traditional micron-sized Cu and ZnO particles and two containing copper and ZnO nanoparticles, respectively. Most of the antifouling coatings tested significantly reduced the abundance and biodiversity of the fouling community in the three study locations across California. Invasive species were suppressed by most coatings at similar levels to natives, suggesting that in general, antifouling coatings do not favor invasive species. We found that zinc-based antifouling coatings were similar and in some cases better performing than copper, despite the generally lower toxicity of zinc to aquatic organisms compared with copper. The performance of zinc-based coatings, moreover, was not directly related to the amount of zinc released into the water or their zinc content. Nano-based coatings did not offer any clear advantages over non-nano coatings, either in the degree of Zn leaching or fouling suppression. Coating matrix properties clearly are an important factor affecting the efficacy and biocide leaching rate of antifouling coatings.

Since its discovery in 2004, graphene has been used in a wide variety of fields including biomedicine, electronics, filtration materials, and surface coatings. The rapidly expanding consumer market for graphene family nanomaterials (GFNs), such as graphene oxide (GO), raises concern regarding their environmental toxicity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of GO exposures in a marine filter-feeding bivalve (Crassostrea virginica) using sublethal biomarker approaches that can contribute to the development of an adverse outcome pathway (AOP). A 14-day study was conducted to identify tissue-specific molecular markers of GO toxicity using a static renewal design. Elevated lipid peroxidation and changes in glutathione-s-transferase (GST) activities were observed in gills and digestive gland tissues of the GO-exposed oysters. These cellular changes were noted for 2.5 and 5 mg/L GO exposures in seawater. Based on our results, reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced oxidative damage is identified as a key event in the proposed AOP. Additionally, detoxification enzymes, such as GST, are thought to be involved in stress signaling leading to adverse effects on cellular health. This study is a part of our two-tier approach towards the identification of short- and long-term effects of GO exposures. This work, together with our previous 72 h exposure, represents the application of biomarker-based investigations in the process of AOP development for graphene family nanomaterials.

The possibility of graphene oxide (GO) exposure to the environment has spurred several studies investigating the fate of this nanoparticle (NP). However, there is currently little or no data on the fate of GO in estuarine and marine waters. This study investigated the aggregation, sedimentation, and transformation of GO in saline waters, considering the roles of salinity (0-50 ‰), light (visible light and solar irradiation), and aging, among others. The attachment efficiency of GO reached unity at 1.33 ‰. The sedimentation rate of GO increased with salinity up to 10 ‰ after which it decreased due to formation of ramified GO agglomerates and media density. On the basis of the sedimentation rate determined at 30 ‰ (0.121 m/d), the residence time of GO agglomerates in the euphotic zone of typical open oceans will exceed 500 days. Aging in the presence of visible light increased the relative abundance of the GO's aromatic (C-C/C=C) fraction, reducing the NP. Reduction of GO in visible light was confirmed via UV-vis and Raman spectroscopic techniques. Reduction of GO was faster under solar irradiation. This study demonstrates that when introduced into saline waters, GO will undergo a range of transformations affecting its fate and potential effects to aquatic organisms.

Graphene is a 2-dimensional nanomaterial with unique mechanical, thermal, electrical, and optical properties. With increasing applications of graphene-family nanomaterials (GFNs) in electronics, biomedicine, and surface coatings, concern for their impacts on aquatic ecosystems is rising. Current information on the toxicity of GFNs, including graphene oxide, is scarce. Filter-feeding bivalves, such as eastern oysters, are good models for nanomaterial exposure studies. We present results from a 72-h static renewal oyster study using 1 and 10 mg/L graphene oxide, which, to our knowledge, is the first report on in vivo effects of graphene oxide exposures in marine bivalves. Water samples were analyzed for graphene oxide concentration and size assessments. Gill and digestive gland tissues were evaluated for lipid peroxidation and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity. In addition, gill sections were fixed for histopathological analyses. Elevated lipid peroxidation was noted in oysters exposed to 10 mg/L graphene oxide. No significant changes in GST activity were observed, but reduced total protein levels were found in digestive gland tissues of exposed oysters at both concentrations. Loss of mucous cells, hemocytic infiltration, and vacuolation were observed in gills of exposed oysters. The results indicate that short-term graphene oxide exposures can induce oxidative stress and epithelial inflammation and adversely affect overall oyster health. Further investigations regarding the fate and sublethal effects of graphene oxide are critical to understanding the risks associated with a rapidly growing graphene consumer market. Targeted metabolomics aims to provide a new approach to investigate metabolites and gather both qualitative and quantitative information. We describe a protocol for extraction and analysis of plant metabolites, specifically 13 secondary metabolites (antioxidants) using liquid chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), with high linearity (R2 > 0.99) and reproducibility (0.23-6.23 R%) with low limits of detection (>0.001 ng/mL) and quantification (>0.2 ng/mL). The protocol was applied to study the antioxidant response of cucumber plants exposed to nanocopper pesticide. Dose-dependent changes in antioxidant concentrations were found, and 10 antioxidants were significantly consumed to scavenge reactive oxygen species, protecting plants from damage. Levels of three antioxidants were up-regulated, as a response to the depletion of the other antioxidants, signaling activation of the defense system. We demonstrated that the reported LC-MS/MS method provides a quantitative analysis of antioxidants in plant tissues, for example to investigate interactions between plants and nanomaterials.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are widely used as flame retardants in a variety of products, including textiles. PBDEs are thus exposed to the natural environment, including wastewater, waterbodies and sediments (at different phases of products' lifecycles), where they will interact with other pollutants. Studies on the interactions between organic pollutants and engineered nanoparticles (NPs) in natural waters are rare. In this study, we investigated the effects of two common PBDEs-BDE 47 and BDE 209-on the physicochemical properties and colloidal stability of TiO2 NP in simple aqueous media and two natural waters (river water and wastewater). Upon the addition of BDE 47 and BDE 209, the zeta (ζ) potential of TiO2 NP increased in magnitude in artificial waters and in natural waters (river water and wastewater), but the magnitude of influence on the NP's surface charge was specific to each natural water considered. Despite the presence of high content of natural organic matter in river water (DOC = 15.8 mg/L) and wastewater (DOC = 26.1 mg/L), low levels of the PBDEs (e.g. 0.5 mg/L) strongly impacted the surface charge and hydrodynamic diameter of TiO2 NP. Both PBDE congeners suppressed the agglomeration of TiO2 NP in the presence of monovalent and divalent cations, and in both natural waters. BDE 47 exhibited a stronger influence than BDE 209 on the surface charge, hydrodynamic diameter, and agglomeration of TiO2 NP in both artificial and natural waters. As such, the interactions between TiO2 NP and the PBDEs can increase the exposure of aquatic organisms to both pollutants. Infrared spectroscopy showed the importance of the aromatic ether groups in the adsorption of PBDEs to TiO2 NP.

The rapidly increasing production and application of graphene oxide (GO) calls for much-needed attention to aspects related to the environmental implications of this unique nanomaterial. To date, very little is known about the transformation of GO when exposed to electromagnetic radiation at different wavelengths, which can occur in natural water systems. This study explored the changes in the physicochemical properties of GO when exposed to the UV and visible wavelength ranges of simulated solar light. Irradiation, especially under UV light, led to remarkable changes in the surface oxygen (O)-functionalities of GO, and cleavage of GO's graphitic bond. The carbon/oxygen (C/O) ratio of GO increased by 41% and 31% after irradiation with simulated solar light and UV irradiation, respectively. Visible light also changed the morphology of GO, but the C/O ratio only increased by 5.5%. The formation of hydroxyl radicals ( OH), superoxide (O2−) and singlet oxygen (1O2) by GO was observed during irradiation with both UV and visible lights, but the proportions were different. 1O2 was primarily formed during visible light irradiation, while O2− and OH were mostly formed under UV light. OH hydroxylated GO, which mainly resulted in the decomposition of GO. The changes in O-containing functional groups on GO by irradiation influenced the colloidal stability of GO in aqueous media, but the physical wrinkle on GO surface may strongly affect its interactions with other organic materials.

An increase in production of commercial products containing graphene-family nanomaterials (GFNs) has led to concern over their release into the environment. The fate and potential ecotoxicological effects of GFNs in the environment are currently unclear, partially due to the limited analytical methods for GFN measurements. In this review, the unique properties of GFNs that are useful for their detection and quantification are discussed. The capacity of several classes of techniques to identify and/or quantify GFNs in different environmental matrices (water, soil, sediment, and organisms), after environmental transformations, and after release from a polymer matrix of a product is evaluated. Extraction and strategies to combine methods for more accurate discrimination of GFNs from environmental interferences as well as from other carbonaceous nanomaterials are recommended. Overall, a comprehensive review of the techniques available to detect and quantify GFNs are systematically presented to inform the state of the science, guide researchers in their selection of the best technique for the system under investigation, and enable further development of GFN metrology in environmental matrices. Two case studies are described to provide practical examples of choosing which techniques to utilize for detection or quantification of GFNs in specific scenarios. Because the available quantitative techniques are somewhat limited, more research is required to distinguish GFNs from other carbonaceous materials and improve the accuracy and detection limits of GFNs at more environmentally relevant concentrations.

Engineered nanoparticles (NPs) are often doped with other elements to improve their functionality and, at times, physical and/or chemical stability. However, the effect of doping on the environmental implications of NPs is not well-understood. We investigated the colloidal stability and effects of CuO NPs doped with Fe (0-10%). Colloidal stability of the Fe-doped CuO NPs in aqueous media, as determined by critical coagulation concentrations of NaCl, decreased with increased Fe-doping. With the increasing production and wide utilization of graphene oxide (GO), the nanomaterials are expected to be released into the environment, and end up in surface waters, and/or wastewater treatment plants. This study explored the changes in the physicochemical properties of GO resulting from photochlorination- simulating the reactions that occur during water and wastewater treatment. Photochlorination resulted in significant changes in the surface oxygen-functionalities of the nanomaterials, and fragmenting of the graphenic carbon sheets was observed. We found that photochlorination can enhance the decomposition of GO through the formation of reduced GO. The changes in surface oxygen-functionalities of GO were attributed to the oxidation by chlorine of the nanomaterials' quinone groups, and further oxidation by and/or radicals. The surface charge of GO, measured by its zeta potential, increased in magnitude with chlorination but decreased in magnitude with photochlorination, leading to the decrease in the colloidal stability of the photochlorinated nanomaterials. The antibacterial effect of the nanomaterials increased with both chlorination and photochlorination. This study clearly shows how the physicochemical properties, and environmental fate and effect of GO are modified by photochlorination.

Nanozerovalent iron (nZVI) is widely used for its ability to remove or degrade environmental contaminants. However, the effect of nZVI-pollutant complexes on organisms has not been tested. We demonstrate the ability of a sulfidized derivative of nZVI (FeSSi) to sorb cadmium (Cd) from aqueous media and alleviate Cd toxicity to a freshwater alga for 32 days. FeSSi particles removed over 80% of the aqueous Cd in the first hour and nearly the same concentration of free Cd remained unbound at the end of the experiment. We found that FeSSi particles with Cd sorbed onto them are an order of magnitude more toxic than FeSSi alone. Further, algal-produced organic material facilitates safer remediation of Cd by FeSSi by decreasing the toxicity of FeSSi itself. We developed a dynamic model to predict the maximum Cd concentration FeSSi can remediate without replacing Cd toxicity with its own. FeSSi can remediate four times as much Cd to phytoplankton populations when organic material is present compared to the absence of organic material. We demonstrate the effectiveness of FeSSi as an environmental remediator and the strength of our quantitative model of the mitigation of nanoparticle toxicity by algal-produced organic material.

While the use of nanopesticides in modern agriculture continues to increase, their effects on crop plants are still poorly understood. Here, 4 week old spinach plants grown in an artificial medium were exposed via foliar spray to Cu(OH)2 nanopesticide (0.18 and 18 mg/plant) or Cu ions (0.15 and 15 mg/plant) for 7 days. A gas chromatography-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry metabolomics approach was applied to assess metabolic alterations induced by Cu(OH)2 nanopesticide in spinach leaves. Exposure to Cu(OH)2 nanopesticide and copper ions induced alterations in the metabolite profiles of spinach leaves. Compared to the control, exposure to 18 mg of Cu(OH)2 nanopesticide induced significant reduction (29-85%) in antioxidant or defense-associated metabolites including ascorbic acid, α-tocopherol, threonic acid, β-sitosterol, 4-hydroxybutyric acid, ferulic acid, and total phenolics. The metabolic pathway for ascorbate and aldarate was disturbed in all exposed spinach plants (nanopesticide and Cu2+). Cu2+ is responsible for the reduction in antioxidants and perturbation of the ascorbate and aldarate metabolism. However, nitrogen metabolism perturbation was nanopesticide-specific. Spinach biomass and photosynthetic pigments were not altered, indicating that metabolomics can be a rapid and sensitive tool for the detection og earlier nanopesticide effects. Consumption of antioxidants during the antioxidant defense process resulted in reduction of the nutritional value of exposed spinach.

Given increasing use of copper-based nanomaterials, particularly in applications with direct release, it is imperative to understand their human and ecological risks. A comprehensive and systematic approach was used to determine toxicity and fate of several Cu nanoparticles (Cu NPs). When used as pesticides in agriculture, Cu NPs effectively control pests. However, even at low (5–20 mg Cu/plant) doses, there are metabolic effects due to the accumulation of Cu and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Embedded in antifouling paints, Cu NPs are released as dissolved Cu+ 2 and in nano- and micron-scale particles. Once released, Cu NPs can rapidly (hours to weeks) oxidize, dissolve, and form CuS and other insoluble Cu compounds, depending on water chemistry (e.g. salinity, alkalinity, organic matter content, presence of sulfide and other complexing ions). More than 95% of Cu released into the environment will enter soil and aquatic sediments, where it may accumulate to potentially toxic levels (> 50–500 μg/L). Toxicity of Cu compounds was generally ranked by high throughput assays as: Cu+ 2 > nano Cu(0) > nano Cu(OH)2 > nano CuO > micron-scale Cu compounds. In addition to ROS generation, Cu NPs can damage DNA plasmids and affect embryo hatching enzymes. Toxic effects are observed at much lower concentrations for aquatic organisms, particularly freshwater daphnids and marine amphipods, than for terrestrial organisms. This knowledge will serve to predict environmental risks, assess impacts, and develop approaches to mitigate harm while promoting beneficial uses of Cu NPs.

Cu-containing nanopesticides are increasingly being used as fungicides in modern agriculture. However, their fate, transport and toxicity in crop plants have been less studied. Here, we exposed 3 week-old cucumber plants cultivated in artificial media to different concentrations of a Cu(OH)2 nanopesticide (0, 2.5 and 25 mg) for 7 d. The physiological and molecular responses were investigated. In order to elucidate the contribution of copper ions to the response, we also exposed the plants to CuSO4. Results showed that the Cu(OH)2 nanopesticide did not reduce the photosynthetic pigment production. In contrast, 10 mg Cu ions induced a significant decrease in photosynthetic pigment levels (around 25%) and leaf chlorosis symptoms. Foliar exposure to 25 mg Cu(OH)2 nanopesticide induced significant changes in mRNA levels of antioxidant and detoxification-related genes; 6 genes (SOD, GPX4, GPX, MDAR, POD, WRKY6) were up-regulated up to 9-fold, and one (cAPX) was down-regulated by 32%. The Cu(OH)2 nanopesticide at both dose levels (2.5 and 25 mg per plant) decreased the transcript production of a stress-related gene (DNAJ) by 40% and 80%, respectively. The up-regulation of the transcript levels of SOD, GPX4, GPX, MDAR, POD, and WRKY6 and down-regulation of DNAJ was also observed in CuSO4 treated plants (with increases of up to 7-fold), indicating that most of the responses are due to released copper ions. We postulate that the increased mRNA levels of antioxidants and detoxification enzymes reflect plant adaptation to over-generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) triggered by copper ions. The activated genes could serve as potential biomarkers of nanopesticide exposure and may be applicable to other plant/Cu nanopesticide interactions.

It is imperative to study the interaction of nanoparticles residuals with crop plants in agricultural soils, due to the increased application of nanotechnology in agriculture. So far, a few studies have focused on the impact of nanoparticles on fruit quality and nutritional supply. In this work, a thorough and comprehensive analysis of metabolite changes of cucumber fruits from plants under nano-Cu stress was possible through the use of both 1H NMR and GC-MS. The results of supervised partial least-squares discriminant analysis from both platforms showed that cucumber fruit extracts samples were clearly grouped based on the nano-Cu level in soil. This indicates that the fruit metabolite profile was influenced by exposure to nano-Cu. GC-MS data showed concentrations of some sugars, organic acids, amino acids, and fatty acids were increased or decreased by nano-Cu. Several metabolites, such as methylnicotinamide (MNA), trigonelline, imidazole, quinolinate were only detected and quantified by 1H NMR. Our results showed that combining the two platforms provided a comprehensive understanding about the metabolites (nutrient supply) changes in cucumber fruits impacted by exposure to nano-Cu.

Background: Multidrug resistant bacterial pathogens employ different mechanisms in evading the action of antibiotics. Multidrug resistance is wide spread among strains of Escherichia coli implicated in several infections including urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal infections, meningitis and bacteraemia. Aim/Objective: This study investigates the antibiotic resistance profile, efflux pump activity and biofilm formation ability of E. coli strains isolated from clinical samples. Methods: A total of 32 E. coli strains isolated from clinical samples were characterized and subjected to antibiotic susceptibility testing using standard methods. Isolates were screened phenotypically for biofilm formation and efflux pump activity. While molecular detection of genes encoding curli fimbriae and efflux pump activity was done by PCR. Results: All 32 (100%) E. coli isolates were resistant to ceftazidime, cefuroxime, cefixime, amoxicillin-clavulanate, ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin. While 30 (93.8%) were resistant to gentamicin, 27 (84.4%) were resistant to cefepime and the least resistance of 15.6% was to imipenem. Efflux pump encoding gene tolC was detected in 13(40.6%) of the isolates, while 1(3.1%) harboured acrA gene. acrB gene was not detected in any of the isolates. Seven (21.9%) of the isolates were strong biofilm formers, while 5 (15.6%) and 20 (62.5%) were moderate and weak biofilm formers respectively. csgA gene was detected in all E. coli isolates. Discussion: High antibiotic resistance of E. coli strains observed in this study is of public health significance.. The implications of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) in the environment are often investigated using pristine particles. However, there are several biogenic and geogenic materials in natural waters that interact with and modify the surface of ENMs, thereby influencing their fate and effects. Here we studied the influence of soluble extracellular polymeric substances (sEPS) produced by freshwater and marine algae on the surface properties and fate of three commercial TiO2 nanoparticles (nTiO2) with different coatings. Adsorption of sEPS by the various nTiO2 is dependent on particle surface area, intrinsic nTiO2 surface charge, and hydrophobicity. Interactions between sEPS and nTiO2 were driven by electrostatic interactions and chemical bonding (bridge-coordination) between the COO- group of sEPS and nTiO2. Charge reversal of positively charged nTiO2 was observed at pH 7 in the presence of 0.5 mg-C/L sEPS. In addition, the critical coagulation concentration (CCC) of nTiO2 increased in the presence of sEPS-from both freshwater and marine sources. CCC of all nTiO2 increased as sEPS concentrations increased. This study shows that naturally occurring sEPS can modify the surface properties and fate of nTiO2 in natural waters, and should be accounted for when predicting the fate and effects of engineered nanomaterials in the environment.

One major concern with the use of antifouling paints is the release of its biocides (mainly copper and zinc) into natural waters, where they may exhibit toxicity to non-target organisms. While many studies have quantified the release of biocides from antifouling paints, very little is known about the physicochemical state of released copper. For proper risk assessment of antifouling paints, characterization of copper released into water is necessary because the physicochemical state determines the metal's environmental fate and effects. In this study, we monitored release of different fractions of copper (dissolved, nano, and bulk) from a commercial copper-based antifouling paint. Release from painted wood and aluminum mini-bars that were submerged in natural waters was monitored for 180 days. Leachates contained both dissolved and particulate copper species. X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to determine the chemical phase of particles in the leachate. The amount of copper released was strongly dependent on water salinity, painted surface, and paint drying time. The presence of nanosized Cu2O particles was confirmed in paint and its leachate using single-particle inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and electron microscopy. Toxicity of paint leachate to a marine phytoplankton was also evaluated.

There has been an increasing influx of nanopesticides into agriculture in recent years. Understanding the interaction between nanopesticides and edible plants is crucial in evaluating the potential impact of nanotechnology on the environment and agriculture. Here we exposed lettuce plants to Cu(OH)2 nanopesticides (1050-2100 mg/L) through foliar spray for one month. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) results indicate that 97-99% (1353-2501 mg/kg) of copper was sequestered in the leaves and only a small percentage (1-3%) (17.5-56.9 mg/kg) was translocated to root tissues through phloem loading. Gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOF-MS) based metabolomics combined with partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) multivariate analysis revealed that Cu(OH)2 nanopesticides altered metabolite levels of lettuce leaves. Tricarboxylic (TCA) cycle and a number of amino acid-related biological pathways were disturbed. Some antioxidant levels (cis-caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, 3,4-dihydroxycinnamic acid, dehydroascorbic acid) were significantly decreased compared to the control, indicating that oxidative stress and a defense response occurred. Nicotianamine, a copper chelator, increased by 12-27 fold compared to the control, which may represent a detoxification mechanism. The up-regulation of polyamines (spermidine and putrescine) and potassium may mitigate oxidative stress and enhance tolerance. The data presented here provide a molecular-scale perspective on the response of plants to copper nanopesticides.

Copper oxide nanomaterials (nano-CuOs) are widely used and can be inadvertently introduced into estuarine and marine environments. We analyzed the effects of different nano-CuOs (a synthesized and a less-pure commercial form), as well as ionic copper (CuSO4) on embryo development in the white sea urchin, a well-known marine model. After 96 h of development with both nano-CuO exposures, we did not detect significant oxidative damage to proteins but did detect decreases in total antioxidant capacity. We show that the physicochemical characteristics of the two nano-CuOs play an essential role in their toxicities. Both nano-CuOs were internalized by embryos and their differential dissolution was the most important toxicological parameter. The synthesized nano-CuO showed greater toxicity (EC50 = 450 ppb of copper) and had increased dissolution (2.5% by weight over 96 h) as compared with the less-pure commercial nano-CuO (EC50 = 5395 ppb of copper, 0.73% dissolution by weight over 96 h). Copper caused specific developmental abnormalities in sea urchin embryos including disruption of the aboral-oral axis as a result in changes to the redox environment caused by dissolution of internalized nano-CuO. Abnormal skeleton formation also occurred.

Nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) and its derivatives hold promise for remediation of several pollutants but their environmental implications are not completely clear. In this study, the physicochemical properties and aggregation kinetics of sulfide/silica-modified nZVI (FeSSi) were compared in algal media in which Chlamydomonas reinhardtii had been cultured for 1, 2, or 11 days in order to elicit the effects of organic matter produced by the freshwater algae. Furthermore, transformation of FeSSi particles were investigated in C. reinhardtii cultures in exponential (1-d) and slowing growth (11-d) phases while monitoring the response of algae. We found evidence for steric stabilization of FeSSi by algal organic matter, which led to a decrease in the particles' attachment efficiency. Transformation of FeSSi was slower in 11-d cultures as determined via inductively coupled plasma and X-ray analyses. High concentrations of FeSSi caused a lag in algal growth, and reduction in steady state population size, especially in cultures in exponential phase. The different outcomes are well described by a dynamic model describing algal growth, organic carbon production, and FeSSi transformations. This study shows that feedback from algae may play important roles in the environmental implications of engineered nanomaterials.

Magnetic sulfide-modified nanoscale zerovalent iron (S-nZVI) is of great technical and scientific interest because of its promising application in groundwater remediation, although its synthesis is still a challenge. We develop a new nanoparticle seeding method to obtain a novel and reactive nanohybrid, which contains an Fe(0) core covered by a highly sulfidized layer under high extent of sulfidation. Syntheses monitoring experiments show that seeding accelerates the reduction rate from Fe(2+) to Fe(0) by 19%. X-ray adsorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy and extended X-ray absorption fine structure analyses demonstrate the hexahedral Fe-Fe bond (2.45 and 2.83 Å) formation through breaking down of the 1.99 Å Fe-O bond both in crystalline and amorphous iron oxide. The XANES analysis also shows 24.2% (wt%) of FeS with bond length of 2.4 Å in final nanohybrid. Both X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer analyses further confirm that increased nanoparticle seeding results in formation of more Fe(0) crystals. Nano-SiO2 seeding brings down the size of single Fe(0) grain from 32.4 nm to 18.7 nm, enhances final Fe(0) content from 5.9% to 55.6%, and increases magnetization from 4.7 to 65.5 emu/g. The synthesized nanohybrid has high cadmium removal capacity and holds promising prospects for treatment of metal-contaminated water.
