Abstract Background Pemetrexed is combined with cisplatin to treat cancer. Whether pemetrexed-cisplatin combination chemotherapy exacerbates cisplatin nephrotoxicity is unclear. Here, we investigated kidney injury in mice administered a non-lethal low-dose regimen of pemetrexed or cisplatin alone and compared it with a pemetrexed-cisplatin combination. Methods Mice were randomly divided into four groups and administered intraperitoneally the experimental drugs solubilized in captisol (sulfobutylether β-cyclodextrin). Group 1 received captisol, Group 2 pemetrexed (10 mg/kg), Group 3 cisplatin (1 mg/kg), and Group 4 pemetrexed (10 mg/kg) plus cisplatin (1 mg/kg). The mice were treated every other day for two weeks, three times per week. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was determined on the third day after the last treatment, followed by a necropsy. Results Whereas the relative kidney weight was comparable in the control vs. pemetrexed or cisplatin alone group, it was significantly increased in the combination group. Mice treated with cisplatin and pemetrexed-cisplatin combination exhibited reduced GFR. The pemetrexed-cisplatin combination caused significant increases in the plasma or urinary levels of kidney injury biomarkers, renal lipid peroxidation, and nitrosative stress compared with pemetrexed or cisplatin alone. Histopathology revealed that pemetrexed or cisplatin alone had minimal effects on the kidneys. By contrast, the pemetrexed-cisplatin combination caused tubular degeneration, dilatation, and granular casts. Live-cell imaging showed that the pemetrexed-cisplatin combination caused more severe apoptosis of primary renal epithelial cells than individual concentrations. Conclusions These findings suggest that combining pemetrexed and cisplatin causes oxidative kidney damage at individual doses that do not cause significant nephrotoxicity. Hence, the renal function of patients undergoing treatment with the pemetrexed-cisplatin combination needs extensive monitoring.

Abstract Background Serine proteases represent over 1% of all proteins in humans. This family of proteins is found on cell surfaces, subcellular organelles like lysosomes or mitochondria, within the nucleus and the protoplasm. Main body of the abstract Among them, trypsin, chymotrypsin and elastase have aroused great interest because of their numerous functions in pathophysiological processes. Altered expression of these enzymes in experimental animal models and humans has been related to various pathologies, like developmental defects, metabolic dysfunctions, cancer, peripheral vascular diseases and infectious diseases. Trypsin and chymotrypsin-like proteases activate, or less oftentimes inactivate, numerous substrates, together with growth factors, receptors, adhesion molecules, angiogenic factors and metalloproteases. Among these substrates, a number of them are key factors in cancer progression, metastasis and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) disease. Elastin-degrading enzyme- elastase, slowly damages elastin over the lifetime of an organism. The physiological processes triggered by elastase leads to the progression of different conditions such as cancer, metabolic syndrome, pulmonary emphysema, atherosclerosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. These serine proteases are currently considered to be targets for the development of new potent therapeutics. Short conclusion The cumulative knowledge that outlined the physiological functions and pathological implications of these proteases and the proposed strategies to regulate a number of their activities and their targeting for therapeutic application and validation in selected disease states are highlighted. These should enhance our appreciation of their roles in aetiology of some diseases as well as the chemotherapeutic benefits of their inhibition or modulation.

Abstract This study investigated the pyrolysis of oil sand bitumen as an alternative energy source in response to the global energy crisis. Thermogravimetric analysis was performed at different heating rates in a nitrogen atmosphere. Low moisture and ash content and high volatile matter content were found by proximate analysis, indicating the possibility for effective pyrolysis and ignition. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy identified functional groups, and X-ray diffraction confirmed the absence of problematic expandable clay minerals. The Friedman, Flynn–Wall–Ozawa, and Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose models were used to calculate the kinetic parameters. The activation energies of the models were primarily between 100 and 200 kJ/mol, with the Friedman model having higher values. It was discovered that the process was non-spontaneous and endothermic. An artificial neural network model demonstrated the potential for future energy applications by accurately predicting the behaviour of pyrolysis.

Plasmodium falciparum Calcium-dependent Protein Kinase 4 (CDPK4) is a promising target for such drugs. This study employed advanced in silico analyses of hexahydroquinolines (HHQ) derivatives to identify PfCDPK4 inhibitors capable of disrupting malaria transmission. Structure-based virtual screening (SBVS) was employed to discover HHQ derivatives with the highest binding affinities against the 3D structure of PfCDPK4 (PDB 1D: 4QOX).Methods: Interaction analysis of protein-ligand complexes utilized Discovery Studio Client, while druglikeness and ADMET properties were assessed using SwissADME and pkCSM web servers, respectively. Quantum mechanical calculations of the top hits were conducted using density functional theory (DFT), and GROMACS was employed to perform the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Binding free energy was predicted using the MMPBSA.py tool from the AMBER package.Results: SBVS identified ten best hits possessing docking scores within the range of − 11.2 kcal/mol and − 10.6 kcal/mol, surpassing the known inhibitor, BKI-1294 (− 9.9 kcal/mol). Among these, 4-[4-(Furan-2-carbonyl)piperazin-1-yl]-1-(naphthalen-2-ylmethyl)-2-oxo-4a,5,6,7,8,8a-hexahydroquinoline-3-carbonitrile (PubChem ID: 145784778) exhibited the highest binding affinity (− 11.2 kcal/mol) against PfCDPK4.Conclusion: Comparative analysis of this compound with BKI-1294 using advanced computational approaches demonstrated competitive potential. These findings suggest the potential of 4-[4-(Furan-2-carbonyl)piperazin-1-yl]-1-(naphthalen-2-ylmethyl)-2-oxo-4a,5,6,7,8,8a-hexahydroquinoline-3-carbonitrile as a promising PfCDPK4 inhibitor for disrupting malaria transmission. Background and Aim: Cholangiocarcinomas are malignant neoplasms that originate from any part of the bile duct epithelium. It is one of the most common liver tumors in dogs. This study described the clinical, cytological, hematological, biochemical, and pathomorphological findings of five cholangiocarcinoma cases in exotic breed dogs aged 2–5 years to aid in clinical diagnosis. Materials and Methods: This study used dogs presented at different times from 2012 to 2021 at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta. History, clinical signs, and vital parameters were recorded. Blood samples were collected for hematology and serum chemistry. Abdominocentesis was performed for cytological diagnosis. All dogs died during treatment, and postmortem examinations were performed. At postmortem, fine needle aspirates were collected from the liver and mesenteric lymph nodes and liver and kidney samples were fixed in 10% neutral-buffered formalin. Results: The dogs showed signs of severe malnutrition, jaundice, and bloating. The hematological analysis indicated anemia, neutrophilia without band neutrophils, and lymphopenia, indicative of a stress hemogram. The serum biochemistry test revealed lower levels of total proteins, albumin, and globulin and higher levels of serum enzymes. Abdominal fluid and mesenteric lymph node cytology revealed clusters of epithelial neoplastic cells. A postmortem examination revealed the liver’s nodular enlargement with the presence of button-like ulcers. Neoplastic epithelial cells are solid masses with hyperchromatic nuclei surrounded by fibrous connective tissues. Conclusion: Cholangiocarcinoma, diagnosed over a period of time in five exotic breeds of dog, consistently presents with the same clinical and postmortem findings, aiding in clinical diagnosis. However, the diagnosis of the disease is not possible in the early stage because of the absence of specific clinical signs. In dogs and possibly other animal species presenting with emaciation, lethargy, icterus, and distended abdomen, cholangiocarcinoma should be suspected, and cytological examination of the abdominal fluid and lymph node aspirates should be performed despite the absence of advanced equipment.

The study reported in this paper examined the leadership practices of successful principals leading teaching and learning in deprived Nigerian school contexts. The critical question is: 'What are the leadership practices of principals leading teaching and learning in successful schools in a deprived Nigerian context?' Data was generated through narrative interviews with purposively sampled principals. Following this, it was analyzed through narrative analysis and analysis of narratives. The findings revealed several leadership practices exerted by the participating principals, which reflected varied approaches to leadership. Drawing from the participating principals' leadership practices, we conclude that a transforming-heroic approach characterizes their leadership. Furthermore, the findings show that contextual realities of deprived school contexts demanded certain leadership practices from the participating principals. In return, they exerted context-relevant practices such as caring leadership and leading with a high level of commitment. This reciprocal exchange shows that a deprived context may shape or reshape principals' professional identities, and likewise, the principals may shape or reshape their school contexts.

Typhoid fever is a systemic infection caused by the Gram-negative bacilli Salmonellae, transmitted via the feaco-oral route. It commonly affects children, leading to complications and death if untreated. This is a report of typhoid fever admissions as seen at ABU Teaching Hospital Zaria over a 13-month period. Objectives: To describe the clinical presentation and management outcomes of children admitted with typhoid fever during a 13-month period. Materials and methods: A retrospective review of demographic, clinical presentation and treatment response of children managed for typhoid fever was conducted. Results were presented as means with standard deviation, proportions, tables, figures and Chisquares with p values. The prevalence of typhoid fever admissions was obtained over the period from 2008-2011. Results: A total of 779 children were admitted from 1st January 2011 to 31st January 2012, out of which 39 (4.9%) had a diagnosis of typhoid fever. Background Phototherapy (PT) for unconjugated hyperbilirubinaemia remains an important and invaluable intervention in the management of neonatal jaundice when appropriately and optimally employed. The efficiency of PT greatly depends on the irradiance of the device, which is measured using an irradiance meter. Available optimal phototherapy is a key desirable newborn service that should be offered and accessible in secondary and tertiary health care facilities. Objective: The study aimed at determining the availability and irradiance measure of phototherapy devices in neonatal units in Kaduna state, Northwestern Nigeria. Materials and Methods: The study was an action research survey of all hospitals providing newborn care in Kaduna state including public and private profit and nonprofit faith based facilities. Phototherapy devices in use in the facilities were documented (types, brand and bulbs). The average irradiance of PT device was measured using model 22 Olympic Bili – MeterTM at facility traditional PT distance and distance of optimal irradiance was also determined and documented. Facilities were introduced to and educated on protocols on neonatal jaundice and how to ensure optimization of irradiance and management of neonatal jaundice. Results: None of the 31 public secondary health care facilities operated a newborn unit nor provided management for neonatal jaundice. Overall 15 facilities provided PT services of which 87%were non-government facilities made up of 15% faith based and 85% private for profit facilities. Only 13.3% facilities had PT devices which offered irradiance (> 10 µW/cm2 / nm) suitable for conventional PT at the facilities’ traditional PT distance this however, increased to 7 (46.7%) facilities with adjusted distances. Only 3 (20%) facilities had devices that could offer intensive PT (irradiance > 30 µW/cm2 / nm) at varying distances. None of the surveyed facilities had a radiometer nor knew irradiance of their PT devices and neither did any have a written protocol for the management of neonatal jaundice. Expertise for and availability of exchange blood transfusion (EBT) services was available only in 26.7% of the facilities. Conclusions: Private health care facilities constitute a major provider of neonatal jaundice healthcare services however the services were grossly suboptimal and inadequate and will need significant and urgent improvement to enhance newborn health and indices.

Background: Phototherapy (PT) remains difficult to deliver in many resource- constrained countries, including Nigeria due to the unavailability of devices that can deliver intensive PT (irradiance ≥30 µW/cm2 / nm) needed to treat the more severe cases of hyperbilirubinaemia. The basic equipment is expensive and replacement parts are often not available. Objective: To compare the blue light irradiance of four locally designed and fabricated PT devices with a proprietary device. Materials and Methods: Four types of intensive PT devices were locally fabricated. Irradiance was measured using an Olympic Medical Bili-Meter. The mean irradiance of triplicate measurements at three positions in the light footprint of each device was determine that distances of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60cm from light source to meter sensor. Results: The irradiance of the fabricated devices (F1-4) and commercial device (C) measured at the most common clinically-used distance of 30 cm for intensive PT were 29.5 ±6.3, 30.3 ±5.3, 25.8 ±5.0,49.0 ±10.5 and 39.2 ± 13.6µW/cm2 /nm respectively with corresponding maximum central irradiance of 36.4, 32.1, 31.2,59.5 and 54.5 µW/cm2 /nm. At a distance of 25cm, all devices delivered irradiance ≥ 30µW/cm2 /nm. The cost of each local device was less than 12% of the commercial one. Conclusions: Locally fabricated devices cost much less and were suitable for delivery of intensive phototherapy (≥30 µW/cm2 /nm) at a distance of 25cm.

Abstract Background Carbapenem Resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) infections are increasingly associated with or directly responsible for morbidity and mortality from bacterial infections in sub-Saharan Africa where there are limited antibiotic options. CRE rectal colonization of patients in healthcare facilities provides a reservoir of these organisms and could potentially cause invasive infections in these settings. The prevalence of rectal carriage among patients attending healthcare facilities in Nigeria has not been previously described. We set out to assess the prevalence of rectal CRE carriage and their antibiotic susceptibility patterns among patients attending healthcare facilities in Nigeria. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out from December 2021 to September 2022 in Ibadan, in which patients attending primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare facilities were screened for rectal carriage of CRE by microscopy, culture and sensitivity of rectal swab specimens. Results A total of 291 patients were screened; 45 (15.5%), 66 (22.7%) and 180 (61.8%) at primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare facilities, respectively. All but one of them had received a third-generation cephalosporin or carbapenem in the preceding 30 days. The mean age was 28.8 years and 55.7% were male. Overall, 51 (17.5%) participants had CRE colonization, with 5(11.1%), 9(13.6%) and 37(20.6%) at primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare facilities, respectively (p = 0.243). Regarding antimicrobial susceptibility, 43(84.3%) CRE isolates were resistant to at least 3 different classes of antibiotics while two Escherichia coli isolates were resistant to all 5 classes of antibiotics tested. The lowest rates of CRE resistance were to tigecycline (6, 11.5%) and colistin (8, 15.7%). Conclusions In this first study on CRE colonization in Nigeria, we found that a substantial proportion of patients in three levels of healthcare facilities had rectal carriage of CRE, including pan-resistant isolates. Active surveillance and appropriate infection prevention and control practices (IPC) need to be urgently strengthened to mitigate the risk of active CRE infection. Trial registration Not applicable.

Abstract Poultry manure (PM) has demonstrated its potential to enhance crop nutritional quality. Nevertheless, there remains a dearth of knowledge regarding its synergistic effects when combined with wood biochar (B) on the nutrient concentrations in sweet potato leaves (Ipomoea batatas L.) and the mineral content stored in sweet potato storage roots. Hence, a two-year field trial was undertaken during the 2019 and 2020 cropping seasons in southwestern Nigeria, spanning two locations (Owo—site A and Obasooto—site B), to jointly apply poultry manure and wood biochar as soil amendments aimed at enhancing the nutritional quality of sweet potato crop. Each year, the experiment involved different combinations of poultry manure at rates of 0, 5.0, and 10.0 t ha−1 and biochar at rates of 0, 10.0, 20.0, and 30.0 t ha−1, organized in a 3 × 4 factorial layout. The results of the present study demonstrated that the individual application of poultry manure (PM), biochar (B), or their combination had a significant positive impact on the nutrient composition of sweet potato leaves and minerals stored in the sweet potato storage roots, with notable synergistic effects between poultry manure and biochar (PM × B) in enhancing these parameters. This highlights the potential of biochar to enhance the efficiency of poultry manure utilization and improve nutrient utilization from poultry manure. The highest application rate of poultry manure at 10.0 t ha−1 and biochar at 30.0 t ha−1 (PM10 + B30), resulted in the highest leaf nutrient concentrations and mineral composition compared to other treatments at both sites. Averaged over two years, the highest application rate of poultry manure at 10.0 t ha−1 and biochar at 30.0 t ha−1 (PM10 + B30) significantly increased sweet potato leaf nutrient concentrations: nitrogen by 88.2%, phosphorus by 416.7%, potassium by 123.8%, calcium by 927.3%, and magnesium by 333.3%, compared to those in the control (PM0 + B0). The same treatment increased the concentration of sweet potato root storage minerals: phosphorus by 152.5%, potassium by 77.4%, calcium by 205.5%, magnesium by 294.6%, iron by 268.4%, zinc by 228.6%, and sodium by 433.3%, compared to the control. The highest application rate of poultry manure at 10.0 t ha−1 and biochar at 30.0 t ha−1 yielded the highest economic profitability in terms of gross margin (44,034 US$ ha−1), net return (30,038 US$ ha−1) and return rate or value-to-cost ratio (VCR) (263). The results suggested that the application of poultry manure at 10 t ha−1 and biochar at 30 t ha−1 is economically profitable in the study areas and under similar agroecological zones and soil conditions.

Mineral dust aerosols impact Earth’s energy budget through interactions with radiation, clouds, atmospheric chemistry, the cryosphere and biogeochemistry. In this Review, we summarize these interactions and assess the resulting impacts of dust, and of changes in dust, on global climate and climate change. The total effect of dust interactions on Earth’s global energy budget—the dust effective radiative effect—is -0.2 ± 0.5 Wm-2 (90% confidence interval), suggesting that dust net cools the climate. Global dust mass loading has increased 55 ± 30% since pre-industrial times, driven largely by increases in dust from Asia and North Africa, leading to changes in the Earth’s energy budget. Indeed, this increase in dust has produced a global mean effective radiative forcing of -0.07 ± 0.18 Wm-2, somewhat counteracting greenhouse warming. Current climate models and climate assessments do not represent the historical increase in dust and thus omit the resulting radiative forcing, biasing climate change projections and assessments of climate sensitivity. Climate model simulations of future changes in dust diverge widely and are very uncertain. Further work is thus needed to constrain the radiative effects of dust on climate and to improve the representation of dust in climate models.

In today's world, eco-friendly solutions are crucial for efficient power delivery and assessing their corresponding economic and environmental benefits is essential. As innovators, it is also imperative to continually improve on existing techniques to solve a problem. Evaluating the existing literature in this area of study, gaps of improving the optimization techniques by reducing the amount of infeasible configurations the reconfiguration procedure encounters was established, additionally, the need to utilize distributed generations that significantly reduce carbon footprint in the environment was also ascertained. Hence, this paper presents an effective integration method for the simultaneous reconfiguration of Radial Distribution Networks (RDNs) and Photovoltaic (PV) DGs allocation, considering the tripodal issues of cost, operational efficiency, and environmental sustainability. A modification of the adaptive mountain gazelle optimizer (AMGO) enhanced with graph theory is deployed for the optimization procedures. The crucial feature of the proposed approach is the reduction of unfeasible configurations throughout the optimization procedure toward satisfying the network's radiality constraints, achieving consistent convergence and reduced computation time. The technical benefits are active power loss minimization, voltage stability, and voltage profile improvement. The economic benefits are analyzed by estimating the purchased power, the associated cost of power losses, and the cost of DGs and switches over a planning period of 20 years. The consequent environmental benefits are analyzed in detail, highlighting the significant reduction in pollutant emissions. The proposed model was tested on the IEEE 33- and 69-bus RDN, considering several scenarios, including synchronous network reconfiguration and DG installations. From the results procured, the simultaneous network reconfiguration and DG allocation provided better outcomes, yielding minimum active power loss of 35.36 kW, minimum voltage of 0.9541 p.u., voltage stability index of 1.9936 p.u., total planning cost of $3.456 million, and emission of 1.744 million lb/hr, respectively, for the 33-bus systems. The corresponding value for the 69-bus system is 32.57 kW, 0.9832 p.u., 2.3847 p.u., $ 2.524 million, and 2.53 million lb/hr, respectively. The proposed model was compared with other reported techniques for performance validation, and its efficacy and superior performance was established.

The reliance on paper-based educational certificates and the lack of a robust and tamper-proof system for verifying academic credentials in the Nigerian education system make them vulnerable to forgery and alterations. The situation poses challenges in guaranteeing the legitimacy of such qualifications, and a need arises for a secure system to verify academic credentials. The proposed solution is a blockchain-based digital certificate verification system (BCVS) that utilizes the Celo blockchain as the underlying blockchain platform to store each digital certificate hash and meta-data, which is unique, secure, and permanently recorded on the blockchain. The system also includes a QR code feature to verify the certificate's authenticity instantly. Ten users evaluated the system, and the average scores are as follows: the user interface had 78%, the application database security scored 66%, the blockchain data security achieved 82%, the revocation mechanism achieved a score of 67%, and the maintainability achieved a score of 46%. While the system is designed to cater to university requirements and can revoke certificates if needed, it represents an advancement in certificate verification, thereby simplifying the process and improving the overall experience for everyone involved, with the potential to be scaled and customized for other universities, institutions, and use cases.

Background Bridges are vital construction infrastructures that almost every nation needs in order to function. Climate change is a significant issue, that especially affects the construction industry. It is very important that bridges are able to withstand the impacts of climate change and adaptation measures will be required to achieve this. Methods The digital twin will be developed using BIM to manage the climate change adaptation measures for the bridges. A 6D BIM model will be created that includes the 3D Revit model of a bridge featuring climate change measures, the climate change adaptation measures timeline schedule, climate change adaptation cost estimation, and carbon emission estimation, which will be produced using Revit software, Navisworks, and Granta EduPack. The results will show how 6D BIM can be used to support the adaptation of bridges to the effects of climate change. Results The findings underscore the efficacy of 6D BIM in enhancing bridge resilience against climate change impacts. The 3D model demonstrates integration of adaptation measures without compromising bridge functionality. Moreover, the 4D model's timeline scheduling facilitates hazard anticipation, project planning, communication enhancement, collaborative efforts, and project visualization. Cost estimations from the 5D model reveal varying costs among adaptation measures, while the 6D model highlights differences in carbon footprints. These BIM dimensions enable stakeholders to analyse effects on project costs and energy consumption, aiding sustainability and cost-efficiency considerations. Conclusions The study exhibits the literature review analysis, the risk assessment, research on climate change adaptation strategies, and implementation using Revit 2022, Navisworks 2022, and Granta EduPack software. By contributing to the adaptation of bridges to climate change effects, the research has provided valuable insights and practical implications for enhancing bridge resilience globally.

Introduction: Psychological distress in heart failure has been relatively neglected by researchers and practitioners, and early detection and treatment may improve the prognosis and patient's quality of life. This study sought to assess psychological distress exemplified by depression and anxiety among acute heart failure (AHF) patients seen at a large teaching hospital in South West Nigeria. Method: The study was a cross-sectional study of 153 consecutively admitted AHF patients who completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and the Generalised Anxiety Disorder 7-item questionnaires. The report of this article adhere to the STROBE reporting guideline. Data was analysed using standard statistical methods. Results: A total of 153 participants with AHF completed the study. The mean age±SD of participants was 57.7±15.0years. The prevalence of depression of any severity was 26.8% while that of anxiety was 9.2%. History of alcohol intake, male gender, and higher score of anxiety were independently associated with depression while the presence of higher depressive scores was the sole independent factor associated with anxiety. Conclusion: Psychological distress is present in AHF patients, so clinicians must evaluate these problems early in all such patients, address their specific needs, and intervene through a team approach when necessary.

ABSTRACT: Oxidative stress (OS) is a major concern that impacts the overall health of chickens in modern production systems. It is characterized by an imbalance between antioxidant defence mechanisms and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This literature review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of oxidative stress in poultry production, with an emphasis on its effects on growth performance, immune responses, and reproductive outcomes. This review highlights the intricate mechanisms underlying OS and discusses how various factors, including dietary components, genetic predispositions, and environmental stressors can exacerbate the production of ROS. Additionally, the impact of oxidative stress on the production performance and physiological systems of poultry is examined. The study also emphasizes the relationship between oxidative stress and poultry diseases, highlighting how impaired antioxidant defenses increase bird's susceptibility to infections. The review assesses the existing approaches to reducing oxidative stress in chickens in response to these challenges. This includes managing techniques to lower stress in the production environment, antioxidant supplements, and nutritional interventions. The effectiveness of naturally occurring antioxidants, including plant extracts, minerals, and vitamins to improve poultry resistance to oxidative damage is also examined. To improve the antioxidant defenses of poultry under stress conditions, the activation of cellular homeostatic networks termed vitagenes, such as Nuclear Factor Erythroid 2-Related Factor 2 (Nrf2) is necessary for the synthesis of protective factors that can counteract the increased production of ROS and RNS. Future studies into novel strategies for managing oxidative stress in chicken production would build on these research advances and the knowledge gaps identified in this review.

Monkeypox, now named mpox, has emerged as a significant public threat, as evidenced by the 2022 outbreak affecting over seventy countries globally. This infectious disease presents debilitating symptoms, including painful skin rashes, mucosal lesions, enlarged lymph nodes, and fever. The situation intensifies with concerns about a novel transmission route, specifically through sexual contact, and the evolution of more transmissible strains. Complicating matters further is the documented spillback of mpox from humans to animals, raising the potential for new animal reservoirs. This study utilized a systematic approach to gather, analyse, and interpret data regarding global mpox outbreaks, phylogenomics, human APOBEC3 enzyme activity, antiviral resistance issues, and the application of the One Health intervention. Emphasizing a One Health approach covers various aspects, including zoonotic origins, pathogenesis, changing epidemiological landscapes, phylogenomic diversity, and clade dynamics. The review underscores the crucial role of global collaboration in understanding and combatting mpox and making it a valuable resource for shaping effective prevention and control measures on a global scale.

This article examines how Remi Raji, a third-generation Nigerian poet, reenacts the social pains and 'dis-eases' of the military dictatorship era in Nigeria in A Harvest of Laughters as traumatogenic, as well as how the poet writes himself out of the trauma. While the article espouses the extant critical notion that the poet offers laughter to the victims of structural violence, social pains, and 'dis-eases' of the military rule era in the country as a balm, it complicates the view by arguing that the poet's versification in the volume and, more importantly, his infatuated exploration of laughter is readable as scriptotherapy. The poems titled 'Introit,' 'I rise now,' 'Gift,' 'Black Laughter,' 'Silence,' 'Silence II,' 'Orphan Cry', and 'Harvest I-VI' are used to demonstrate this. Background: Iron deficiency presents a muddled clinical picture in patients with sickle cell anemia (SCA). The picture is further complicated when these patients develop sickle cell nephropathy (SCN). This study aimed to identify the correlates of iron deficiency among adult patients with SCN in Lagos, Nigeria. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted among adult patients with SCN who presented at the nephrology clinic of the tertiary health facility. Data on demographics, clinical history, laboratory investigations, and iron status were collected and analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 28. Results: One hundred and nineteen adult patients with SCN were enrolled in the study. The mean age was 28.9 ± 9.5 years, and the majority were females. Iron deficiency was present in 36 (30.2%) subjects, while 7.6% had elevated iron status. Younger age and male sex were associated with iron deficiency state. Participants with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of ≥60 mL/min had a higher prevalence of iron deficiency (r = −0.28 P < 0.01/r = −0.32 P < 0.01). A logistic regression analysis showed no independent association between these factors and iron deficiency. Conclusion: This study showed that iron deficiency is common in adults with SCN, seen in one-third of participants. Therefore, although iron overload is frequently acknowledged as a significant issue in SCA, it should not be automatically assumed in cases where nephropathy is present. The study findings also highlight the need for routine screening for iron deficiency among SCN patients, especially among males, younger patients or those with an eGFR ≥60 mL/min, to optimize their management and improve their outcomes.

This study addresses the critical research gap in understanding regional drought dynamics in West Africa (WA) using advanced multivariate wavelet coherence (MWC) techniques, revealing critical insights into the complex interplay between large-scale climate indices and regional drought patterns. Utilizing the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index (scPDSI), we examined drought characteristics across WA from 1950 to 2018. Our analysis revealed significant drying trends across all seasons, with the Arid zone experiencing the most severe and prolonged drought (158 months) from August 1981 to September 1994, affecting 79.77% of the area. The entire WA region faced its most extensive drought during this period, impacting over 60% of the study area. MWC analysis demonstrated enhanced drought predictability when combining climate indices, particularly the Southern Oscillation Index with the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, yielding high Average Wavelet Coherence values of 0.52 (SPEI) and 0.53 (scPDSI), with substantial Percentage Area of Significant Coherence of 40.19% and 43.68%, respectively. These findings highlight the crucial role of oceanic-atmospheric interactions in modulating drought conditions across WA. Our results provide valuable insights for improving drought forecasting and management strategies in the region, emphasizing the need for integrated approaches that consider multiple climate indices and their combined effects on drought dynamics.

Tandem repeats (TRs) represent one of the largest sources of genetic variation in humans and are implicated in a range of phenotypes. Here we present a deep characterization of TR variation based on high coverage whole genome sequencing from 3550 diverse individuals from the 1000 Genomes Project and H3Africa cohorts. We develop a method, EnsembleTR, to integrate genotypes from four separate methods resulting in high-quality genotypes at more than 1.7 million TR loci. Our catalog reveals novel sequence features influencing TR heterozygosity, identifies population-specific trinucleotide expansions, and finds hundreds of novel eQTL signals. Finally, we generate a phased haplotype panel which can be used to impute most TRs from nearby single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with high accuracy. Overall, the TR genotypes and reference haplotype panel generated here will serve as valuable resources for future genome-wide and population-wide studies of TRs and their role in human phenotypes.

Desert dust accounts for a large fraction of shortwave radiation absorbed by aerosols, which adds to the climate warming produced by greenhouse gases. However, it remains uncertain exactly how much shortwave radiation dust absorbs. Here, we leverage in-situ measurements of dust single-scattering albedo to constrain absorption at mid-visible wavelength by North African dust, which accounts for approximately half of the global dust. We find that climate and chemical transport models overestimate North African dust absorption aerosol optical depth (AAOD) by up to a factor of two. This occurs primarily because models overestimate the dust imaginary refractive index, the effect of which is partially masked by an underestimation of large dust particles. Similar factors might contribute to an overestimation of AAOD retrieved by the Aerosol Robotic Network, which is commonly used to evaluate climate and chemical transport models. The overestimation of dust absorption by models could lead to substantial biases in simulated dust impacts on the Earth system, including warm biases in dust radiative effects.
