Abstract

In this paper we describe the design and characterization of the optical system of LSPE/Strip, a coherent polarimeter array that will observe the microwave sky from the Teide Observatory in Tenerife in two frequency bands centred at 43 and 95 GHz through a dual-reflector crossed-Dragone telescope of 1.5 m aperture. In general, optical systems composed by a telescopefeed array assembly have non-idealities that might limit their ability to perform high-precision measurements. It is thus necessary to understand, characterize and properly control these systematic effects. For this reason, we performed electromagnetic simulations to characterize angular resolution, sidelobes, main beam symmetry, polarization purity and feedhorns orientation. The results presented in this paper will be an essential input for further optical studies and for the LSPE/Strip data analysis. Abstract

In this paper we discuss the design, manufacturing and characterization of the feed horn array of the Strip instrument of the Large Scale Polarization Explorer (LSPE) experiment. Strip is a microwave telescope, operating in the Q- and W-band, for the observation of the polarized emissions from the sky in a large fraction (about 37%) of the Northern hemisphere with subdegree angular resolution. The Strip focal plane is populated by forty-nine Q-band and six W-band corrugated horns, each feeding a cryogenically cooled polarimeter for the detection of the Stokes $Q$ and $U$ components of the polarized signal from the sky. The Q-band channel is designed to accurately monitor Galactic polarized synchrotron emission, while the combination of Q- and W-band will allow the study of atmospheric effects at the observation site, the Observatorio del Teide, in Tenerife. Abstract

[Abridged] The measurement of the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation is one of the current frontiers in cosmology. In particular, the detection of the primordial B-modes, could reveal the presence of gravitational waves in the early Universe. The detection of such component is at the moment the most promising technique to probe the inflationary theory describing the very early evolution of the Universe. We present the updated performance forecast of the Large Scale Polarization Explorer (LSPE), a program dedicated to the measurement of the CMB polarization. LSPE is composed of two instruments: Strip, a radiometer-based telescope on the ground in Tenerife, and SWIPE (Short-Wavelength Instrument for the Polarization Explorer) a bolometer-based instrument designed to fly on a winter arctic stratospheric long-duration balloon. The program is among the few dedicated to observation of the Northern Hemisphere, while most of the international effort is focused into ground-based observation in the Southern Hemisphere. Measurements are currently scheduled in Winter 2021/22 for SWIPE, with a flight duration up to 15 days, and in Summer 2021 with two years observations for Strip. We describe the main features of the two instruments, identifying the most critical aspects of the design, in terms of impact into performance forecast. We estimate the expected sensitivity of each instrument and propagate their combined observing power to the sensitivity to cosmological parameters, including the effect of scanning strategy, component separation, residual foregrounds and partial sky coverage. We also set requirements on the control of the most critical systematic effects and describe techniques to mitigate their impact. LSPE can reach a sensitivity in tensor-to-scalar ratio of $\sigma_r<0.01$, and improve constrains on other cosmological parameters., Comment: Submitted to JCAP. Abstract

The Large Scale Polarization Explorer (LSPE) is a cosmology program for the measurement of large scale curl-like features (B-modes) in the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background. Its goal is to constrain the background of inflationary gravity waves traveling through the universe at the time of matter-radiation decoupling. The two instruments of LSPE are meant to synergically operate by covering a large portion of the northern microwave sky. LSPE/STRIP is a coherent array of receivers planned to be operated from the Teide Observatory in Tenerife, for the control and characterization of the low-frequency polarized signals of galactic origin; LSPE/SWIPE is a balloon-borne bolometric polarimeter based on 330 large throughput multi-moded detectors, designed to measure the CMB polarization at 150 GHz and to monitor the polarized emission by galactic dust above 200 GHz. The combined performance and the expected level of systematics mitigation will allow LSPE to constrain primordial B-modes down to a tensor/scalar ratio of $10^{-2}$. Abstract

In this paper we discuss the latest developments of the STRIP instrument of the "Large Scale Polarization Explorer" (LSPE) experiment. LSPE is a novel project that combines ground-based (STRIP) and balloon-borne (SWIPE) polarization measurements of the microwave sky on large angular scales to attempt a detection of the "B-modes" of the Cosmic Microwave Background polarization. STRIP will observe approximately 25% of the Northern sky from the "Observatorio del Teide" in Tenerife, using an array of forty-nine coherent polarimeters at 43 GHz, coupled to a 1.5 m fully rotating crossed-Dragone telescope. A second frequency channel with six-elements at 95 GHz will be exploited as an atmospheric monitor. At present, most of the hardware of the STRIP instrument has been developed and tested at sub-system level. System-level characterization, starting in July 2018, will lead STRIP to be shipped and installed at the observation site within the end of the year. Abstract

We discuss the design and expected performance of STRIP (STRatospheric Italian Polarimeter), an array of coherent receivers designed to fly on board the LSPE (Large Scale Polarization Explorer) balloon experiment. The STRIP focal plane array comprises 49 elements in Q band and 7 elements in W-band using cryogenic HEMT low noise amplifiers and high performance waveguide components. In operation, the array will be cooled to 20 K and placed in the focal plane of a $\sim 0.6$ meter telescope providing an angular resolution of $\sim1.5$ degrees. The LSPE experiment aims at large scale, high sensitivity measurements of CMB polarization, with multi-frequency deep measurements to optimize component separation. Abstract

The large-scale polarization explorer (LSPE) is a cosmology program for the measurement of large-scale curl-like features (B-modes) in the polarization of the cosmic microwave background. Its goal is to constrain the background of inflationary gravity waves traveling through the universe at the time of matter-radiation decoupling. The two instruments of LSPE are meant to synergically operate by covering a large portion of the northern microwave sky. LSPE/STRIP is a coherent array of receivers planned to be operated from the Teide Observatory in Tenerife, for the control and characterization of the low-frequency polarized signals of galactic origin; LSPE/SWIPE is a balloon-borne bolometric polarimeter based on 330 large throughput multi-moded detectors, designed to measure the CMB polarization at 150 GHz and to monitor the polarized emission by galactic dust above 200 GHz. The combined performance and the expected level of systematics mitigation will allow LSPE to constrain primordial B-modes down to a tensor/scalar ratio of 10^−2. We here report the status of the STRIP pre-commissioning phase and the progress in the characterization of the key subsystems of the SWIPE payload (namely the cryogenic polarization modulation unit and the multi-moded TES pixels) prior to receiver integration.

Abstract

The assessment of the Metop-SG MicroWave Imager (MWI) radiometric performance is based on a complete set of thermal vacuum tests. Such an extensive experimental campaign requires the development of large calibration targets (black bodies) with controlled systematics and low residual uncertainties. The significant size of such targets, which are based on pyramidal emitting surfaces, does not allow for a complete minimization of the thermal gradients below the required accuracy level. This work presents the modeling approach that has been developed to deal with both such thermal gradients and the proximity of the baffle. Results on the frequency dependence of the cold target brightness temperature (ECCOSORB CR-117) are reported between 18.7 and 183 GHz. The complete uncertainty budget provides 1-sigma errors levels lower than 0.22 K. The systematic effect of thermal coupling with the Earth Target has been found as relevant as the coupling to the chamber. This interdependence requires a look-up-table approach to maintain the low uncertainty levels mentioned above.

Abstract

In the last years, the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) generated significant innovations in in situ antenna measurements. UAV-mounted test sources have been exploited to characterize the radiation pattern of receiving antennas and arrays for HF radars, radio telescopes in very high-frequency (VHF) band, and up to the X-band for radar characterization. A UAV test source operating in the Q -band has been recently developed within the large-scale polarization explorer (LSPE) project. It will be used for the in situ validation of a ground-based cluster of coherent polarimeters for cosmology observation. This article presents the payload solution that is actually applicable to general UAV-based radiation pattern measurements in the Q-band. It is based on a phase-locked loop synthesizer and an active multiplier coupled with a power detector to compensate for signal power drifts in postprocessing. Relevant system tests have been performed in both laboratory environment and operative conditions. The measured outdoor radiation patterns are in good agreement with both the anechoic chamber measurements and simulated data.

Abstract

A non-tethered Unmanned Aerial Vehicle equipped with a RF source has been used as a near-field scanner in the VHF band. In this configuration, the source is not phase-locked to the receiver local oscillator/clock. A reference antenna, placed at a proper distance from the antenna-under-test, has thus been exploited to reconstruct the phase. Experimental results at 175 MHz for the central element of the Pre Aperture Array Verification System of the Square Kilometre Array are shown. The comparison with simulations shows very good agreement.

Additive manufacturing technologies are currently envisaged to boost the development of a next generation of microwave devices intended for satellite telecommunications. Due to their excellent electromagnetic and mechanical properties, metal waveguide components are key building blocks of several radio frequency (RF) systems used in these applications. This article reports the perspectives deriving from the use of laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) technology to the production of high-performance microwave waveguide devices. A robust design of filters has been implemented in several prototypes manufactured in AlSi10Mg alloy. The corresponding measured performance confirm the applicability of the L-PBF process to the intended applications

Abstract

Additive manufacturing technologies have been increasingly applied to the development of radio frequency components in the past few years. Indeed, the free-form capability of these processes allows for the design of novel components, whose actual implementation through conventional machining is rather complex or even not possible. This paper describes a monolithic WR51 component integrating three radio frequency functionalities, namely, bending, twisting, and filtering. Three aluminum prototypes with different bending/twisting radii have been manufactured through the selective laser melting process. They exhibit a measured rejection higher than 60 dB in 17.5 and 21.2 GHz, and a measured return loss better than 20 dB in 12.5 and 15 GHz. Significant mass and envelope reductions (higher than 60% depending on the bending/twisting radius) with respect to the reference subsystem with distinct waveguide components are achieved. These results assess the effectiveness of 3-D metal printing in the miniaturization and integration of waveguide systems.

Abstract

In this paper we discuss the latest developments of the STRIP instrument of the “Large Scale Polarization Explorer” (LSPE) experiment. LSPE is a novel project that combines ground-based (STRIP) and balloon-borne (SWIPE) polarization measurements of the microwave sky on large angular scales to attempt a detection of the “B-modes” of the Cosmic Microwave Background polarization. STRIP will observe approximately 25% of the Northern sky from the “Observatorio del Teide” in Tenerife, using an array of forty-nine coherent polarimeters at 43 GHz, coupled to a 1.5 m fully rotating crossed-Dragone telescope. A second frequency channel with six-elements at 95 GHz will be exploited as an atmospheric monitor. At present, most of the hardware of the STRIP instrument has been developed and tested at sub-system level. System-level characterization, starting in July 2018, will lead STRIP to be shipped and installed at the observation site within the end of the year. The on-site verification and calibration of the whole instrument will prepare STRIP for a 2-years campaign for the observation of the CMB polarization.

Abstract

This paper reports on the Q-band polarizers and ortho-mode transducers developed for the STRatospheric Italian Polarimeter (STRIP) coherent multi-feed instrument. A split-block design of groove polarizers and an ad-hoc assembly procedure have been conceived in order to achieve recurring high-performance for all the 49 polarizers (i.e., cross-polarization < -35 dB, return-loss > 36 dB, insertion-loss < 0.07 dB). The ortho-mode transducers are based on a novel multi-layer turnstile-junction design. This configuration has been conceived toward a high parallelization rate of the manufacturing process, while providing high electromagnetic performance (cross-coupling < -50 dB, isolation > 50 dB).

Abstract

A new E-plane filtering structure suitable for very high-power telecom satellite applications is presented. The conceived configuration exploits the design flexibility provided by cascading highly integrated step/stub resonators with pseudoelliptic frequency responses. Several design examples of filters and diplexers in Ku-, K-, and Q-band are reported and supported by experimental tests campaigns. The components have been designed with a full-wave 2-D spectral element method. Prototypes have been realized in aluminum clam-shell technology. Excellent agreement between the models and the experimental results has been achieved. An alternative manufacturing of the proposed architecture based on the selective laser melting technology is also reported. The attractiveness of the structure in view of this emerging additive manufacturing solution is demonstrated. The main advantages of the proposed filter configuration suitable for components operated in heavily loaded multi-carrier environment are: compact design, very low losses, high rejection, and high power-handling capability.

Abstract

This work will present the corrugated-horns, polarizers and ortho-mode transducers developed for the 49-element coherent polarimeter array working in [39, 48] GHz to be embarked in the Large Scale Polarization Explorer. The latter is an ASI-funded balloon experiment designed to measure the CMB B-modes on large angular scales. The presentation will focus on the analysis, design, manufacturing and measurements of these components.
