3. Suppressiveness of soil amendments with pelleted plant materials on the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita

Abstract

Soil treatments with formulated plant biomasses or waste materials can be an effective alternative to green manure crops for a sustainable management of root-knot nematode infestations. The suppressive performance of soil amendments with three commercial formulations of defatted seed meal from Brassica carinata, dry biomass of Medicago sativa and pressed pulp from Beta vulgaris was comparatively evaluated on the root knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita both on potted and field tomato (cv. Regina) trials. Products were applied at rates of 10, 20, 30 or 40 g/kg and 20 and 40 T/ ha soil in pots and field, respectively. Soil non treated or treated with the nematicide Oxamyl were used as controls in both experiments. Amendments in potted soil significantly reduced M. incognita infestation on tomato roots compared to both the untreated control and treatment with Oxamyl, also increasing tomato plant growth up to the 30 g/kg soil rate. At the end of the field tomato crop, soil population density of M. incognita resulted significantly reduced by all the tested treatments, whereas tomato yield was significantly higher than the untreated control only at the lowest amendment rate. Soil amendments with the materials tested in this study demonstrated to be a potential additional tool for a satisfactory and safe management of root-knot nematodes.

Abstract

In this paper, a family of nonlinear congruential generators (NLCGs) based on the digitized Renyi map is considered for the definition of hardware-efficient pseudorandom number generators (PRNGs), and a theoretical framework for their study is presented. The authors investigate how the nonlinear structure of these systems eliminates some of the statistical regularities spoiling the randomness of sequences generated with linear techniques. In detail, in this paper, a necessary condition that the considered NLCGs must satisfy to have maximum period length is given, and a list of such maximum period PRNGs for period lengths up to [2.sup.31] - 1 is provided. Referring to the NIST800-22 statistical test suite, two PRNG examples are presented and compared to well-known PRNGs based on linear recurrencies requiring a similar amount of resources for their implementation. Abstract

In this brief, a family of discretized one-dimensional chaotic maps derived from the Sawtooth map is analyzed to evaluate its suitability for the integrated implementation of low-complexity digital pseudorandom bit generators (PRBGs). The proposed PRBGs, classifiable as nonlinear congruential generators, are investigated in terms of period length, statistical properties of the generated sequences, hardware complexity, and are compared with traditional PRBGs. Index Terms--Digital integrated circuits, discretized chaotic maps, pseudorandom bit generators (PRBGs).

Abstract

Unfavourable working conditions are a prominent issue in the field of economic and social studies. The topic has been deeply investigated, especially in order to build intrinsic job quality indices. Many psycho-social risks that negatively impact on workers’ health and well-being, such as a very high work intensity and work-related stress, have become key matters of interest. We explore two different analytical tools to measure work-related stress, detecting the effects of subjective, environmental and economic variables on the response patterns of a large sample of respondents. We discuss some results obtained through a model belonging to the class of generalized CUB models which is worthwhile for this kind of surveys; in addition, a multiple indicator, multiple independent cause (MIMIC) model is employed to interpret work-related stress concept as a latent variable, which manifests itself through a number of indicators and it is influenced by a number of exogenous variables. Specifically, we analyze the perceived stress self-assessments using data collected in the fifth European Working Conditions Survey carried out by Eurofound in 2010.

45. La qualità del suolo come requisito preliminare per la sostenibilità delle produzioni agricole

Abstract

La relazione tra la qualità del suolo e quella delle produzioni agricole che su di eso vengono realizzate viene spesso trascurata, nonostante gli immediati e pesanti riflessi sulla salute umana. Un continuo ed accurato monitoraggio della qualità dei suoli agricoli sembra dunque essere un requisito fondamentale per la qualità degli alimenti. La nematofauna del suolo costituisce un ottimo bioindicatore della qualità del suolo stesso, in quanto risponde prontamente ai cambiamenti ambientali (stress e inquinamento) e la distribuzione e attività dei differenti gruppi trofici può essere usata per stabilire lo stato di conservazione di un suolo. Tali proprietà sono state confermate da un nostro studio basato sul campionamento di diversi siti della regione Puglia, localizzati in una riserva naturale, in un parco, in prossimità di una centrale elettrica a carbone, in prossimità di industrie metallurgiche e in prossimità di una discarica. Per ciascuno di tali siti è stata condotta I'analisi della nematofauna presente utilizzando sia approcci morfologici che molecolari (NGS sequencing). Gli indici ecologici hanno permesso di evidenziare i siti più o meno disturbati, confermando che i nematodi sono ottimi bioindicatori (Pousis et al., 2013). Peraltro, la componente fitoparassita della nematofauna di un suolo può essa stessa contribuire ad una alterazione della qualità del suolo, a seguito dell'accumulo di residui tossici (nel terreno, nelle acque, nelle parti eduli delle piante) di trattamenti con nematocidi di sintesi. I nostri studi su sostanze nematocide di origine vegetale hanno come obiettivo il miglioramento della qualità del suolo mediante una riduzione dei trattamenti con prodotti di sintesi e dei relativi residui.
