Although social work, as a profession, has increasingly emphasized the importance of evidence-based practice (EBP), social work students do not consistently learn to infuse EBP as a process in their daily practice, contributing to low EBP uptake in the field. Communicating evidence to clients is an ethical imperative for informed consent and a precondition for shared decision-making; however, students are not adequately trained to talk to clients about research evidence as part of intervention planning and contracting. This article describes the development of a competency framework for communicating research evidence within the therapeutic relationship, in support of a teaching and learning innovation aimed at cultivating holistic competence in Master of Social Work students as they learn about and perform EBP. The competency framework draws on models and practices from social work, medicine, nursing, psychology, and related disciplines. The development of competencies in the communicative process within EBP is part of an evolving pedagogical approach that may serve to enhance EBP education in social work.

Social workers have an important role in the field of mental health, and social work programs have a responsibility to prepare students for practice in the field. This scoping review mapped and synthesized the literature on mental health, addictions, and suicide in social work education and training. We found 51 articles that examined social work education in addictions (n=23), suicide (n=17), and mental health (n=7), and some articles (n=4) focused on more than one area. Most articles were empirical studies that used quantitative methods, and only one article did not examine social work education in the United States. The studies showed variability in teaching methods, format of training programs, extent to which theory and practice were linked, and the integration of culture and diversity in the programs. The articles contained recommendations to increase teaching students about mental health, addictions, and suicide in all social work programs. Studies also recommended training for faculty and field instructors, using simulation-based learning methods, including competencies in training programs that target knowledge, skills, values, and beliefs; identifying a theoretical framework; integrating culture and diversity; and evaluating training programs. The article discusses implications for best practices in social work education in mental health, addictions, and suicide.

Social workers play a critical role in assessing and treating individuals and families with mental health and addiction concerns. Although social workers are key professionals in the mental health workforce, there are gaps in the training and education of mental health, addictions, and suicide, and many students are inadequately prepared for field education. Simulation-based learning is an exemplar method of teaching and assessing practice competencies across several health-care professions including social work. This teaching note describes a simulation-based learning activity in which MSW students build competence in mental health, substance use, and suicide risk assessments with standardized clients. This innovation is integrated in a social work practice in mental health course and was developed in partnership with a community mental health and addiction treatment center. Through this partnership, we developed core competencies, case scenarios, as well as teaching resources and assessment instruments. An advisory committee consisting of MSW students, faculty members, and field instructors evaluated the simulation-based learning innovation and made recommendations for the next iteration. Implications for teaching social work practice in mental health are discussed.

Purpose: The aim of this scoping review is to systematically scope the literature on social work, the COVID-19 pandemic, and health policy. The research question guiding the scoping review is: What are the policy issues emerging during the COVID-19 pandemic that are of importance for social workers working in health and mental health? Method: Scoping review methodology following Arksey and O'Malley's five-stage framework. Results: A final sample of 191 articles were included in the scoping review. The five themes identified are: (a) strengthening social work's capacity to address structural issues in practice, (b) gaps in social work education, (c) need for new and updated standards and guidelines, (d) need for professional clarity and professional supports, and (e) inadequate government response. Conclusions: By strengthening uptake of the policy-practice framework, social work practitioners concurrently address immediate client issues and address upstream factors perpetuating inequities emerging during the pandemic. Service user involvement in social work education is well-established in some regions and a new developing approach in others. For instance, since policy reform in 2002, it has been customary for service users and carers to be involved in critical aspects of professional social work education in the UK. Yet, expansion in North American contexts has been limited. The scope and extensiveness of service user involvement are increasingly varied, regardless of mandatory or voluntary educational standards. This scoping review mapped and synthesized literature from 2010 to 2018 on service user and carer involvement in social work education to identify innovative approaches and their effectiveness in practice. We used a scoping review protocol to select 35 studies and assessed the studies using a framework for the evaluation of educational programmes. Although most studies were published in the UK, there was greater representation from other regions than previously reported. The findings suggest that social work programs are adopting various approaches to integrate service users in social work education and innovative research methodologies for evaluation. Objectives: Pharmacists have been increasingly integrated into primary care teams, leading to improved health outcomes for patients. The two objectives of this study were (i) to describe how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted pharmacists' role in mental health care within Canadian primary care teams and (ii) to describe Canadian pharmacists' experiences collaborating with other healthcare providers in the delivery of mental health services during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Cross-sectional observational study utilizing an online survey consisting of closed-ended and open-ended questions. Primary care pharmacists in Ontario were eligible to participate. Descriptive statistics were collated, and qualitative data underwent thematic analysis. A total of 51 pharmacists participated in the study. Key findings: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the expanding role of pharmacists in attending to the mental health care of patients. Working within a collaborative, interprofessional healthcare environment, pharmacists support patients' mental health in a variety of ways, including medication education and management, non-pharmacologic approaches and supportive conversations, and identification of resources, including referrals, wellness checks, and consulting with physicians. Increasing demand for mental health services has led to higher referrals to pharmacists, which will likely persist and require further education of pharmacists in mental health along with better access to deliver virtual care. Conclusion: In response to the increasing mental health care needs of patients since the COVID-19 pandemic, primary care pharmacists reported increased attention spent on mental health care. High-resolution (sub-seismic) stratigraphic correlation in fluvial strata is extremely difficult using conventional subsurface core and wireline-log data (e.g. gamma-ray, neutron, density, sonic logs). Spectral gamma-ray logs provide additional data on lithological composition that can aid identification of chronostratigraphic surfaces in a high-resolution sequence stratigraphic correlation framework. The application of spectral gamma-ray data in constructing such a framework is demonstrated using data from exposures and the subsurface from the Cretaceous non-marine Blackhawk Formation and Castlegate Sandstone of the Book Cliffs area, Utah, USA. These strata provide an ideal test case for the use of spectral gamma-ray data in fluvial stratigraphy, because interpretations can be compared directly with a high-resolution sequence stratigraphic framework from coeval shallow-marine strata exposed nearby. The stratigraphic abundance of coals and relatively uniform Th/K ratio, which indicates uniform clay mineralogy, in mudstone sections of the non-marine Blackhawk Formation implies a humid, subtropical climate throughout its deposition. Variations in facies architecture and stratigraphy are therefore interpreted to have been driven principally by fluctuations in relative sea level and hinterland tectonics. Fluvial and fluvio-tidal sandstones within incised valleys, which lie above erosional sequence boundaries, have a highly variable spectral gamma-ray character, but locally are marked by distinctive heavy mineral lags and concentrations (Th consistently >3 ppm). On the interfluves of incised valleys, sequence boundaries are marked by palaeosols that locally have a distinctive leached, potassium-depleted character (Th/K ratio >17). Lateral variability in spectral gamma-ray character of sequence boundaries is consistent with facies and sequence stratigraphic models of the non-marine Blackhawk Formation and Castlegate Sandstone, but sequence boundaries do not exhibit a clear, diagnostic character in every location. In addition, high Th/K ratios of the type noted at interfluve palaeosols may be produced by potassium depletion beneath coal seams as a result of acid groundwater percolation during early diagenesis, and by thorium enrichment in heavy mineral lags within foreshore sandstones. These alternative interpretations can be eliminated if high Th/K ratios occur in intervals lacking coal seams and shallow-marine sandstones, respectively. Thus, within the context of a sound understanding of detrital mineralogy, diagenetic history, facies and appropriate sequence stratigraphic models, spectral gamma-ray data allow sequence boundaries to be identified and correlated in non-marine fluvial strata at least 80 km from the interpreted coeval shoreline. Integrating contextual competency frameworks into health social work education and practice can bolster student training and staff supervision strategies. This article describes the iterative development of a Health Social Work Competency Rating Scale (HSWCRS), generated using a competency framework tested through simulation and an iterative research process with healthcare social workers. A modified Delphi method consisting of an e-mail questionnaire, two discussion meetings, and two rounds of classroom-based testing were employed to develop and refine the scale with the participation of clinicians, students, and researchers. The HSWCRS is designed to convey the core competencies required for single-session social work consultations in a healthcare setting by assessing formal elements (such as introduction, validation, cultural inclusiveness, client centredness), use of self (such as self-awareness, positionality), and an overall assessment of knowledge and skills. This scale adds to the competency-based education literature in social work by offering a guide to assess and measure key healthcare social work competencies in a range of educational environments, and has the potential to guide practice in educational and practice settings.
