Mapping glacial landscapes has been a focus of research for more than 150 years but has developed considerably over recent decades in response to the availability of high-resolution remotely sensed data (e.g., satellite imagery and digital elevation models). The most recent development in this field is the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, which are now widely adopted. UAVs are particularly useful in glacial environments since they allow small-scale (sub-metre) features to be identified and mapped and can be repeatedly deployed (e.g., in multi-year surveys) even in these often remote and inhospitable locations. Given that UAVs are now used in many, and probably most, glacial-mapping projects, this chapter outlines a general framework for collecting, processing, and analysing UAV data in glacial environments, before providing examples of some relevant case studies.

Policy Analysis

The research reported here combines high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) derived from airborne LiDAR with ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys and macro- and micro-scale sedimentological analyses to study the geomorphology and internal structure and composition of ridges and mounds within an area of hummocky topography in the Brosna basin, central Ireland. Our evidence indicates that much of the hummocky topography consists of fragmented mega-scale glacial lineations (MSGLs) indicating a phase of accelerated ice flow, overlain by groups of small ridges composed of subglacially derived till and sediment gravity flow deposits. Subtle differences in ridge morphology indicate they may be multi-genetic and formed both ice-marginally as moraines and subglacially as small ribbed moraine. We interpret MSGL-ridge associations as a subglacial bedform continuum reflecting the evolution from a deforming bed to brittle deformation, due to changing thermal and hydrological conditions at the ice-bed interface during ice sheet retreat. Adjacent glaciofluvial landforms indicate initial en- and supra-glacial meltwater drainage, possibly directly related to changing basal thermal/hydrological characteristics and subglacial ridge formation. Subsequently a subglacial conduit system evolved, and later retreat involved formation of ice-marginal ridges. The partially preserved landsystem reflects formation at a polythermal to active temperate ice marginal zone, rather than the stagnating temperate margin previously assumed for this area. Our work demonstrates the usefulness of hummocky topography in identifying changes in ice sheet bed thermal/hydrological characteristics during deglaciation and the importance of combining multiple evidence strands in reconstructing the processes involved in glacial landform construction.

The Antarctic continent reached its current polar location ~83 Ma and became shrouded by ice sheets ~34 Ma, coincident with dramatic global cooling at the Eocene-Oligocene boundary. However, it is not known whether the first Antarctic glaciers formed immediately prior to this or were present significantly earlier. Here we show that mountain glaciers were likely present in the Transantarctic Mountains during the Late Palaeocene (~60–56 Ma) and middle Eocene (~48–40 Ma). Temperate (warm-based) glaciers were prevalent during the Late Eocene (~40–34 Ma) and, in reduced numbers, during the Oligocene (~34–23 Ma), before larger, likely cold-based, ice masses (including ice sheets) dominated. Some temperate mountain glaciers were present during the Miocene Climatic Optimum (~15 Ma), before a widespread switch to cold-based glaciation. Our findings highlight the longevity of glaciation in Antarctica and suggest that glaciers were present even during the Early-Cenozoic greenhouse world.

Lakes fed by Greenlandic mountain glaciers and ice caps (GICs) contain important archives of Arctic palaeoenvironmental change. GIC proglacial lake records have been increasingly used to reconstruct Holocene glacier behaviour, largely focusing on macrostratigraphy. However, despite the wide range of topographic settings and catchment characteristics, there has been little systematic analysis of the ways that catchment conditions are registered in the clastic sediments of GIC lakes. Such signals provide valuable insights into landscape processes and palaeoenvironmental conditions that are not routinely captured in other Quaternary glacial morphosedimentary archives. This review synthesises sedimentological and geochemical evidence from existing Holocene GIC proglacial lake records to establish: how catchment-wide conditions have been recorded in the lacustrine sequences; and our ability to isolate these signals to enhance palaeoenvironmental reconstruction. Our review shows that with careful sedimentological and targeted (bio)geochemical analyses coupled with a clear process-based understanding, catchment and in-lake signals can be effectively identified in the microstratigraphic and mineral grain record. Such signals include wind patterns, mass wasting, precipitation events and seasonal lake ice cover, that can complement broader palaeoclimatic proxy evidence. The approaches collated here, if more widely applied, could considerably enhance environmental reconstructions not only in Greenland, but in glaciated catchments elsewhere.

Catastrophic floods have formed deep bedrock canyons on Earth, but the relationship between peak discharge and bedrock erosion is not clearly understood. This hinders efforts to use geological evidence of these cataclysmic events to constrain their magnitude – a prerequisite for impact assessments. Here, we combine proxy evidence from slackwater sediments with topographic models and hydraulic simulations to constrain the Late Holocene flood history of the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river in northern Iceland. We date floods to 3.5, 1.5 and 1.35 thousand years ago and confirm that flow peaks during these events were at most a third of previous estimates. Nevertheless, exposure ages suggests that nearby knickpoints retreated by more than 2 km during these floods. These findings support a growing consensus that the extent of bedrock erosion is not necessarily controlled by discharge and that canyon-carving floods may be smaller than typically assumed.

Understanding Arctic glacier sensitivity is key to predicting future response to air temperature rise. Previous studies have used proglacial lake sediment records to reconstruct Holocene glacier advance–retreat patterns in South and West Greenland, but high-resolution glacier records from High Arctic Greenland are scarce, despite the sensitivity of this region to future climate change. Detailed geochemical analysis of proglacial lake sediments close to Zackenberg, northeast Greenland, provides the first high-resolution record of Late Holocene High Arctic glacier behaviour. Three phases of glacier advance have occurred in the last 2000 years. The first two phases (c. 1320–800 cal. a BP) occurred prior to the Little Ice Age (LIA), and correspond to the Dark Ages Cold Period and the Medieval Climate Anomaly. The third phase (c. 700 cal. a BP), representing a smaller scale glacier oscillation, is associated with the onset of the LIA. Our results are consistent with recent evidence of pre-LIA glacier advance in other parts of the Arctic, including South andWest Greenland, Svalbard, and Canada. The sub-millennial glacier fluctuations identified in the Madsen Lake succession are not preserved in the moraine record. Importantly, coupledXRFandXRDanalysis has effectively identified a phase of ice advance that is not visible bysedimentology alone. This highlights the value of high-resolution geochemical analysis of lake sediments to establish rapid glacier advance–retreat patterns in regions where chronological and morphostratigraphical control is limited.
