La1−xAgxFeO3 (x = 0.05–0.25) perovskites deposited on a honeycomb-shaped monolithic metallic support were used as catalysts for the total oxidation of hydrocarbons. Monolithic catalysts were prepared by washcoating honeycomb substrates with lanthanum-stabilized γ-Al2O3, on which La1−xAgxFeO3 was deposited. Catalysts with La1−xAgxFeO3 perovskites show higher activity for methane oxidation at x ≥ 0.05 and hexane oxidation at x ≥ 0.1 than LaFeO3 catalyst. The perovskite catalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, TPR-H2, O2-TPD and BET specific surface area measurement. Ag forms solid solutions with the La1−xAgxFeO3 perovskite lattice for x = 0.05–0.1. In La1−xAgxFeO3 perovskites (x ≥ 0.1), Ag0 particles with average crystallite sizes from 31 to 41 nm were also identified. When Ag is introduced into the LaFeO3 perovskite, both the changes occurring after some Ag is incorporated into its structure and the presence of large crystallites of metallic silver contribute to the catalysts' activity increase. Abstract Background Metastasis is a common feature of many advanced stage cancers and metastatic spread is thought to be responsible for cancer progression. Most cancer cells are localized in the primary tumor and only a small population of circulating tumor cells (CTC) has metastatic potential. CTC amount reflects the aggressiveness of tumors, therefore their detection can be used to determine the prognosis and treatment of cancer patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate human chorionic gonadotropin beta subunit (CGB) and gonadoliberin type 1 (GNRH1) expression as markers of tumor cells circulating in peripheral blood of gynecological cancer patients, indicating the metastatic spread of tumor. Methods CGB and GNRH1 expression level in tumor tissue and blood of cancer patients was assessed by real-time RT-PCR. The data was analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U and Spearman tests. In order to distinguish populations with homogeneous genes' expression the maximal likelihood method for one- and multiplied normal distribution was used. Result Real time RT-PCR results revealed CGB and GNRH1 genes activity in both tumor tissue and blood of gynecological cancers patients. While the expression of both genes characterized all examined tumor tissues, in case of blood analysis, the transcripts of GNRH1 were found in all cancer patients while CGB were present in 93% of patients. CGB and GNRH1 activity was detected also in control group, which consisted of tissue lacking cancerous changes and blood of healthy volunteers. The log-transformation of raw data fitted to multiplied normal distribution model showed that CGB and GNRH1 expression is heterogeneous and more than one population can be distinguished within defined groups. Based on CGB gene activity a critical value indicating the presence of cancer cells in studied blood was distinguished. In case of GNRH1 this value was not established since the results of the gene expression in blood of cancer patients and healthy volunteers were overlapping. However one subpopulation consists of cancer patient with much higher GNRH1 expression than in control group was found. Conclusions Assessment of CGB and GNRH1 expression level in cancer patients' blood may be useful for indicating metastatic spread of tumor cells.

Radiotherapy (RT) plays a key role in brain tumours but can negatively impact functional outcomes and quality of life. The aim of this study was to analyse anti-neural and onconeural autoantibodies and markers of blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption in patients with primary brain cancer undergoing RT., Materials and Methods: A prospective study was conducted on 45 patients with a brain tumour scheduled for intensity-modulated radiotherapy. Assessments were performed at baseline, post-RT, and at three months. We measured serum levels of BBB disruption biomarkers and anti-neural, onconeural, and organ-specific antibodies., Results: Antibodies against nucleosome antigens and neuronal surface antigens were detected in 85% and 3% of cases, respectively; anti-neural and onconeural antibodies were observed in 47% and 5.8%. In 44% patients, ≥2 antibody types were detected. No significant changes in BBB biomarkers were observed., Conclusion: The findings of this study show that a humoral immune response is common in patients undergoing RT for brain cancer. This response appears to be non-organ specific but rather directed against nucleosome antigens, but onconeural antibodies were uncommon, suggesting a low risk of a neurological paraneoplastic syndrome. Our data suggested that radiotherapy may not affect BBB integrity, but larger studies are needed to better characterise the pathophysiological effects of RT.

Over the last years, inverse gas chromatography (IGC) proved to be a versatile and sensitive analytical technique for physicochemical properties. However, the comparability of results obtained by different users and devices remains a topic for debate. This is the first time, an interlaboratory study using different types of IGC instruments is reported. Eight organizations with different IGC devices defined a common lab measurement protocol to analyse two standard materials, silica and lactose. All data was collected in a standard result form and has been treated identically with the objective to identify experimentally observed differences and not potentially different data treatments. The calculated values of the dispersive surface energy vary quite significantly (silica: 22 mJ/m 2 - 34 mJ/m 2 , lactose 37 mJ/m 2 - 51 mJ/m 2 ) and so do the ISP values and retention volumes for both materials. This points towards significant and seemingly undiscovered differences in the operation of the instruments and the obtained underlying primary data, even under the premise of standard conditions. Variations are independent of the instrument type and uncertainties in flow rates or the injected quantities of probe molecules may be potential factors for the differences. This interlaboratory study demonstrates that the IGC is a very sensitive analytical tool, which detects minor changes, but it also shows that for a proper comparison, the measurement conditions have to be checked with great care. The main aims of thin biofilm synthesis are to either achieve a new form to promote the transport of drugs in oral delivery systems or as a coating to improve the biocompatibility of the implant's surface. In this study, the Langmuir monolayer technique was employed to obtain films containing Mg-doped hydroxyapatite with 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5% Mg(II). The obtained modified HA particles were analysed via the FT-IR, XRD, DLS, and SEM methods. It was shown that the modified hydroxyapatite particles were able to form thin films at the air/water interface. BAM microscopy was employed to characterized the morphology of these films. In the next step, the mixed films were prepared using phospholipid (DPPC) molecules and modified hydroxyapatite particles (HA-Mg(II)). We expected that the presence of phospholipids (DPPC) in thin films improved the biocompatibility of the preparing films, while adding HA-Mg(II) particles will promote antibacterial properties and enhance osteogenesis processes. The films were prepared in two ways: (1) by mixing DPPC and HA-Mg (II) and spreading this solution onto the subphase, or (2) by forming DPPC films, dropping the HA-Mg (II) dispersion onto the phospholipid monolayer. Based on the obtained π-A isotherms, the surface parameters of the achieved thin films were estimated. It was observed that the HA-Mg(II) films can be stabilized with phospholipid molecules, and a more stable structure was obtained from films synthesied via method (2).
