This study presents the effect of stoichiometry and annealing condition on Ti–Cr AB2-type hydrogen storage alloys. Prior to annealing the majority phase of the as-cast alloys was the C14 Laves phase, with separate Ti and Cr phases. Annealing treatment (1273 K/14 d) led to a transition from C14 to C15 Laves phase structure. Both C14 (as-cast) and C15 (annealed) cell size increased with Ti content, up to a ratio (Cr/Ti) of 1.6, due to B-site Ti substitution in the lattice up to a limit. Pressure composition isotherm (PCI) measurements demonstrated alloys containing a greater Ti content had a better maximum hydrogen storage capacity (1.5 vs. 1.03 wt%) and lower plateau pressure (9.4 vs. 15.8 bar) at 253 K. Annealing resulted in a lower storage capacity (1.05 vs. 1.49 wt%), greater plateau pressure (ca. 30 bar) and flatter plateau slope (25 % reduction in plateau slope). Reduction in hydrogen storage capacity of annealed alloys could be due to diffusion of residual Cr in the alloy into the C15 Laves phase during the annealing process, thereby changing the local composition as confirmed through X-ray diffraction (XRD).

This article presents a comprehensive review of the current landscape and prospects of large-scale hydrogen storage technologies, with a focus on both onshore and offshore applications, and flexibility. Highlighting the evolving technological advancements, it explores storage and compression techniques, identifying potential research directions and avenues for innovation. Underwater hydrogen storage and hybrid metal hydride compressed gas tanks have been identified for offshore buffer storage, as well as exploration of using metal hydride slurries to transport hydrogen to/from offshore wind farms, coupled with low pressure, high flexibility electrolyser banks. Additionally, it explores the role of metal hydride hydrogen compressors and the integration of oxyfuel processes to enhance roundtrip efficiency. With insights into cost-effectiveness, environmental and technology considerations, and geographical factors, this review offers insights for policymakers, researchers, and industry stakeholders aiming to advance the deployment of large-scale hydrogen storage systems in the transition towards sustainable energy.

My dissertation answers what appears to be a simple question: How is Hobbes's politics related to his physics and metaphysics? However, answering this question has proved more difficult for scholars than it appears at first glance, and there has there has been no consensus in the literature over the past fifty years. Two well-represented extremes dominate the literature: the first view claims that Hobbes's politics is deduced from his physics and ultimately his metaphysics; and the second view claims that the politics arose independently of Hobbes's other work. My dissertation argues that Hobbes does in fact provide a unified systematic philosophy, and I contrast this unity with problems in Descartes's epistemology and optics. To make this argument, I carve a middle way between the two extremes in the literature by situating Hobbes within mechanical philosophy and 17th century mathematics. I use three concepts to clarify Hobbes's project: mechanical explanation, maker's knowledge, and mixed mathematical science. First, I show that for Hobbes a mechanical explanation involves tracing the motions of bodies at various levels of complexity, from simple points in geometry to human bodies in the state of nature and to commonwealth bodies. This view provides Hobbes with resources for a naturalized epistemology, which I show is the point at issue in Hobbes's Objections to Descartes's Meditations. Second, Hobbes says that we have "maker's knowledge" in geometry and politics. I show that "maker's knowledge" is Hobbes's empiricist answer to (1) how we have causal knowledge in politics and mathematics by constructing and (2) how mathematics is applicable to the world. Finally, I show that the mixed mathematical sciences, e.g., optics, were Hobbes's inspiration for a unified philosophical system. I argue that the physics in De corpore, the optics in De homine, and the politics in Leviathan are treated by Hobbes as mixed mathematical sciences, which provides a new way to see Hobb

The theory of mind (ToM) deficit associated with autism has been a central topic in the debate about the modularity of the mind. Most involved in the debate about the explanation of the ToM deficit have failed to notice that autism’s status as a spectrum disorder has implications about which explanation is more plausible. In this paper, I argue that the shift from viewing autism as a unified syndrome to a spectrum disorder increases the plausibility of the explanation of the ToM deficit that appeals to a domain-specific, higher-level ToM module. First, I discuss what it means to consider autism as a spectrum rather than as a unified disorder. Second, I argue for the plausibility of the modular explanation on the basis that autism is better considered as a spectrum disorder. Third, I respond to a potential challenge to my account from Philip Gerrans and Valerie Stone’s recent work (Gerrans 2002; Stone & Gerrans 2006a, 2006b; Gerrans & Stone 2008).

In this paper, I first criticize Gerrans and Stone’s (2008) account. Second, I discuss various studies of individuals with autism and argue that they are best explained by positing a higher-level, domain-specific ToM module.
