Abstract

Structural alteration of synthetic implants aims to achieve better bioactivity, higher cellular response, and regulated degradability, all of which are critical criteria for a biomaterial to serve as a graft in bone regeneration. The aim of this work was to synthesize silicon-substituted hydroxyapatite and test its bioactivity in simulated body fluid (SBF) by proving the use of sodium metasilicate (Na2SiO3.9H2O) as an affordable precursor of silica. Thus, the study evaluated the in vitro bone-bonding capacity of hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) (HA) substituted with silicate ion (Ca10(PO4)6−x(SiO4)x(OH)2−x; SixHA). The SixHA with x = 0.4 was synthesized by utilizing a wet precipitation method with sodium metasilicate as a low-cost silica alternative for alkoxysilane precursors. The SixHA was then examined for properties such as morphology, elemental composition, phase composition, and the nature of chemical bonds using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), respectively. An in vitro bioactivity experiment was also carried out by incubating the SixHA in simulated body fluid (SBF) at 36.5 ◦C for 7 and 14 days. The obtained results revealed the substitution of SiO44− for some PO4 3− groups in the hydroxyapatite structure. The SixHA nucleated more apatite crystals on its surface and demonstrated some degradability during the periods of immersion in SBF. The characteristics of the SixHA imply that it could be used as a graft in bone restoration applications, thus signifying that sodium metasilicate could serve as an economic silica source for silicon-substituted hydroxyapatite production. Abstract

This research paper briefly describes the analytical and experimental utilizations of data generated from plant (wonderful kola seeds), natural resources (distilled water), organic material (iron chloride salt) and plant-mediated synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles in a bid to understudy their applications and economic relevance. The data extrapolated from the characterization phase were theoretically, chemically and statistically analyzed as a result of comparison with other data set obtained from relatively published articles or journals, which are in line with nuclear applications and energy generation. The data (generated from the experimental procedure) were converted to energy calibrated values in Mega-electron Volt (MeV).

29. Biogenic nanosilver inhibits Mycobacteriausing nitrate reductase assay

Abstract

Nanosilver was synthesised by bioreduction using aqueous extracts of Moringa oleifera(MO-AgNPs) leaf and Allium cepabulb (AC-AgNPs) as reducing and capping agents. The nanosilver was characterised with UV/vis, FT-IR, and SEM-EDX. Microbiological activity on five Mycobacteriastrains: ATCC 35882, ATCC 25177, Mycobacteriumother than tuberculosis (MOTT), Mycobacterium fortuitumand multi drug resistance M. tuberculosis(MDR-MTB) was investigated using nitrate reductase assay (NRA). Results obtained for UV/vis gave absorption maxima at 430 nm for MO-AgNPs and 440 nm for AC-AgNPs. FT-IR showed functional groups associated with the biomolecular capping agents. SEM showed the nanosilver formed aggregates spherical and/or in oval shape with smooth surface. EDX spectra exhibited the presence of elemental silver. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) study for both nanosilver against Mycobacteriaindicated a higher inhibitory activity for MO-AgNPs over the AC-AgNPs. Herein, we have reported the first biosynthesised nanosilver activity against Mycobacteriausing NRA. Nanosilver may therefore be developed as nanoaerosol for targeted and effective treatment of Mycobacteriainfections.

Abstract

In the present report, a bioactive glass was synthesized from silica sand as economic substitute to alkoxy silane reagents. Sodium metasilicate (Na2SiO3) obtained from the sand was hydrolyzed and gelled using appropriate reagents before sintering at 950 °C for 3 h to produce glass in the system SiO2Na2OCaOP2O5. Compression test was conducted to investigate the mechanical strength of the glass, while immersion studies in simulated body fluid (SBF) was used to evaluate reactivity, bioactivity and degradability. Furthermore, the glass samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) to evaluate the microstructure and confirm apatite formation on the glass surface. The glass, dominated by bioactive sodium calcium silicate, Na2Ca2Si3O9 (combeite) crystals, had mechanical strength of 0.37 MPa and showed potentials for application as scaffold in bone repair. Abstract

Abstract: Single-walled carbon nanotube-B2O3 nanocomposite has been prepared using solvothermal technique. Tributyl borate was explored as the boron oxide reagent using toluene and water as the solvent, respectively. Characterization of the reaction products using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis confirmed the formation of the CNT-B2O3 nanocomposite. The solvothermal approach may serve as a facile strategy for synthesis of nanocomposites of metal oxides and carbon nanotubes especially when metal alkoxides is utilized as precursor for the metal oxides.
