Researchers have noted the detrimental effects of racial microaggressions on the mental health of Black college students. Further, research has identified ethnic identity as a possible moderating factor on the mental health of racial minorities. We examined six dimensions of racial microaggressions and their relation to depression symptoms in a sample of 189 Black college students. We also investigated whether or not ethnic identity served as a moderator. Regression analyses demonstrated significant positive associations between all six dimensions of racial microaggressions and depression, and that ethnic identity significantly moderated the relationship between one dimension (i.e., Low-Achieving/Undesirable Culture) and depression, such that ethnic identity strengthened the relationship between this dimension and depression symptoms. We discuss implications for research and clinical practice on college campuses, including a need for college counselors to address racial microaggressions and ethnic identity in their clinical work.

In America, voting is treated more like a privilege for some, rather than a right for all citizens to elect the leaders of our nation. From its inception, America denied women, and people of color, access to the ballot. Through the process of Amendments, Supreme Court decisions, and the passage of legislation, the electorate has expanded to include the previously excluded groups. The 2013 decision of Shelby v. Holder, a case that essentially stated that constraints placed on states by the federal government to eliminate bias at the polls under the Voting Rights Act of 1965, were outdated. This ruling opened the flood gates for states and counties in the South to return to their old ways of voter denial and voter suppression for racial minorities. State legislators began proposing and passing laws that would suppress voter turnout among racial minorities in the 2016 presidential election and beyond. This research examines the voter suppression laws drafted by state legislators across the US. Statistical analysis is employed to determine the content, the sponsor, the sponsor’s party, and region of the country where the bills were introduced. The expectation for this research is that white, Republican, male legislators, from the South are the primary sponsors of voter suppression laws in the US that has a disproportionate negative impact on all other groups. Themes of epicurianism, modernity, and the trope of the self-made man are explored. The settings for the two novels, Florence, Italy and the English Midlands, are considered.

Surveys parents (n=1,234) and teachers (n=209) from a first-ring suburban school district about issues of trust in family-school relationships. Higher levels of trust were reported at elementary level than at middle or high school levels. Trust was positively correlated with three indicators of school performance. Efforts towards building trust between parents and teachers are discussed. (Author/JDM)

The pressure-volume equation of state (EoS) of single-crystal MgO has been studied in diamond-anvil cells loaded with helium to 118 GPa and in a non-hydrostatic KC1 pressure medium to 87 GPa using monochromatic synchrotron X-ray diffraction. A third-order Birch-Murnaghan fit to the non-hydrostatic P-V data (KC1 medium) yields typical results for the initial volume, [V.sub.0] = 74.698(7) [[Angstrom].sup.3], bulk modulus, [K.sub.T0] = 164(1) GPa, and pressure derivative, K' = 4.05(4), using the non-hydrostatic ruby pressure gauge of Mao et al. (1978). However, compression of MgO in helium yields [V.sub.0] = 74.697(6) [[Angstrom].sup.3], [K.sub.T0] = 159.6(6) GPa, and K' = 3.74(3) using the quasi-hydrostatic ruby gauge of Mao et al. (1986). In helium, the fitted equation of state of MgO underdetermines the pressure by 8% at 100 GPa when compared with the primary MgO pressure scale of Zha et al. (2000), with [K.sub.T0] = 160.2 GPa and K' = 4.03. The results suggest that either the compression mechanism of MgO changes above 40 GPa (in helium), or the ruby pressure gauge requires adjustment for the softer helium pressure medium. We propose a ruby pressure gauge for helium based on shift of the ruby-[R.sub.1] fluorescence line ([DELTA][LAMBDA]/[[LAMBDA].sub.0]) and the primary MgO pressure scale, with P (GPa) = A/B{[[1 + ([DELTA][LAMBDAP]/[[LAMBDA].sub.0]).sup.B] - 1}, where A is fixed to 1904 GPa and B = 10.32(7). In this article, we explore the degree to which African American state legislators have been able to translate election to office into substantive representation. We are particularly interested in the impact of race and gender on the likelihood of legislative bill submission and passage. While previous studies have focused on inter-group representation, our analysis examines intra-group representation by disaggregating race, gender, and party identification. By doing so, we are able to capture the intra-group variation between various groups such as black Democratic men and black Democratic women and white Democratic women and white Republican women. Using the case of Mississippi, the state with the highest number of black elected officials, we examine the legislator's propensity to introduce and pass progressive legislation. We employ logistic regression using cluster standard errors. The results reveal that a progressive bill is more likely to be introduced when a black woman serves as the primary sponsor, as compared to other members in the state legislature. However, contrary to our expectations, African American women are not significantly less likely to get their bills passed when compared to their colleagues. Research shows that epithelial cell proliferation and cellular repair mechanisms are prolonged following neuropeptide depletion in guinea pig tracheal tissue. Experiments determining the effects of depleted neuropeptides from sensory guinea pig neurones following chronic capsaicin treatment are described.
