Background/Aim. Mandibular prognathism (MPG) is a severe form of facial and jaw deformity. This kind of anomaly usually requires combined orthodontic-surgical treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the changes in the craniofacial complex after orthodontic-surgical treatment of patients with MPG by analyzing the cephalometric parameters on tele-radiography images before and after treatment. Methods. The study included a sample of 40 subjects (mean age 24.1 ± 4.1 years) who underwent orthodontic-surgical treatment of MPG. Vertical and sagittal parameters which characterize MPG were measured on profile teleradiography images before and 12 months after treatment. Based on the analysis of cephalometric parameters on preoperative and postoperative teleradiography images, dental and skeletal changes that occurred after treatment were determined. Results. After the end of the treatment, most of the parameter values that characterize MPG were significantly reduced. A drop in values was noted in the following parameters: SNB, SNPg, NS/SpP, NS/MP, SpP/MP, NSAr, ArGoMe, Bjork polygon, NMe, NSna, SnaMe, SSnp, I/SpP. There was a statistically significant increase in the values of the following parameters SNA, ANB, GoArNS, SGo and i/MP. No significant changes in values were recorded on the OP/NS and SArGo parameters. Conclusion. Orthodontic-surgical treatment of MPG leads to changes in the bone and dental structures of the craniofacial system. As a result of such treatment, there is a functional improvement and an improvement in the appearance of the face.

Background/Aim. Mandibular prognathism, as one of the more severe forms of dentofacial deformities, impairs the oral functions and appearance of the patient’s face and represents a psychosocial handicap with a negative impact on the quality of life (QoL). The aim of the study was to assess the impact of orthodontic-surgical (OS) treatment on the QoL of patients with mandibular prognathism. Methods. The study involved 40 patients (19 men and 21 women, with a mean age of 24.1 ± 4.1 years) who underwent the OS treatment for mandibular prognathism. All patients completed two questionnaires – the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) and the Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ), be-fore the start of treatment and 12 months after the completion of treatment. Results. The results of both questionnaires showed an improvement in the QoL compared to the condition before the treatment. According to the OQLQ questionnaire, there was a postoperative improvement in the QoL (score 24.8 ± 12.9) compared to the preoperative period (score 51.3 ± 15.2). According to the results of the OHIP-14 questionnaire, there was a postoperative improvement in the QoL (score 11.3 ± 2.9) compared to the preoperative period (score 20.8 ± 6.9). The improvement of the QoL, 12 months after the treatment, occurred in all life segments, measured by both questionnaires. Conclusion. OS treatment of mandibular prognathism improves all oral functions, including the appearance of the patient’s face, thus improving the QoL.

Introduction Due to its simplicity, sliding mechanism is very often used in clinical practice for post-extraction space closure, however, the efficiency of this method may be reduced due to friction and changes in the properties of the materials used in this method. The most commonly used methods of sliding mechanics are nickel titanium (NiTi) closed coil spring and elastic chain. The aim of this study was to analyze force degradation in the application of nickel titanium closed coil springs and elastic chains during post-extraction space closure within treatment with fixed orthodontic appliances. Material and Methods The total sample in this study consisted of 78 post-extraction spaces in patients who were indicated for extraction of first premolars and treatment with fixed orthodontic appliances. Nickel titanium closed coil springs and elastic chains were used to close the post-extraction spaces. Post-extraction spaces were monitored for 6 months with follow up examinations every 4 weeks. Measurements of initial force, at the beginning of mechanism activation and residual force in the observation period were performed during control examinations. Results Results of this research showed that with both methods of sliding mechanism there was a significant decrease in the observation period. When using NiTi closed coil springs, the value of average initial force at control examination was between 189.00-210.25 g, while residual was in the range of 117.56-133.50 g that NiTi closed coil springs kept an average 61.57% of initial force. The average initial force on the control examinations for elastic chains was between 184.5-205.38 g, while residual force was in range of 100.39-113.00 g, that elastic chains retained an average 53.41% of initial force. Conclusion There was a significant force degradation between inspections, when sliding mechanics were applied. The loss of force between activation phases of NiTi closed coil springs was smaller compared to the forces produced by elastic chains.

Background / Aim: Children with type 1 diabetes mellitus are thought to have an increased risk of caries. This study aimed to examine the short-term effect (sixty days long) of commercially available yoghurt consumption containing the Lactobacillus rhamnosus probiotic culture (LGG yoghurt) on the oral Streptococcus mutans count and saliva buffer capacity in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Methods: Children were divided into two groups: the experimental group and the placebo group. Both groups consisted of 50 (N = 50) children with juvenile diabetes, aged 10-15 years, with controlled glucose levels and irregular oral hygiene. At the first examination, every child was evaluated for the caries risk. A sample of unstimulated saliva before yoghurt consumption and after washout of the teeth was inspected for S mutans count. The samples were tested for Saliva buffer capacity (Saliva-Check Buffer Testing Mat GC America). The same procedure was repeated after 14 days, 30 days and 60 days after the treatment with probiotic yoghurt. Results: The results showed decreased number of S mutans colonies at the 60day control examination in the probiotic group. The study also proved a significant increase in saliva buffer capacity in both groups after 60 days. Conclusion: It could be concluded that daily consumption of LGG yoghurt can improve caries prevention in children with diabetes mellitus type I.

Introduction: When planning orthodontic treatment, it is sometimes necessary to apply the extraction of individual teeth, in order to achieve proper occlusion and an acceptable aesthetic appearance. Clinicians give the greatest advantage to elastic chains as a method for post-extraction space closure during treatment with fixed orthodontic appliances. When closing post-extraction spaces, it is necessary to measure them in order to adjust the treatment plan. One of the most acceptable methods is photogrammetry. The aim of this study was to analyze, using a photogrammetric method, the efficacy of post-extraction space closure with elastic chains during orthodontic treatment with fixed orthodontic appliances. Material and Methods: The total sample in study consisted of 38 post-extraction spaces in 19 patients who were indicated for first premolars extraction and use of fixed orthodontic appliances in order to achieve treatment goal. Elastic chains were used to close post-extraction spaces. Post-extraction sites were monitored for 6 months with follow-up examinations every 4 weeks. Mechanisms were activated at controlled examinations, and measurements of the width of post-extraction spaces were performed by photogrammetry and digital caliper. Results: The results showed that average reduction of post-extraction space width was 1.00 mm per month by photogrammetric measurement, while the average values of measurements with a digital caliper were 1.02 mm. The average values were measured in six time intervals and a statistically significant change in average intervals of post-extraction spaces during 6 months was determined. Conclusion The elastic chain has proven to be a very effective mechanism for closing post-extraction space, and photogrammetry as a simple and precise method for monitoring results of treatment. Since the difference in relation to measurements with a digital caliper is minimal, photogrammetry can be routinely applied in everyday practice.

probiotics ,periodontitis ,scaling and root planning ,Dentistry ,RK1-715 - Abstract
Introduction Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by pathologic microorganisms/periopathogens from oral biofilm. Standard periodontal therapy consists of scaling and root planing (SRP). Probiotics can be used as an adjunctive to standard periodontal therapy, since it is known that probiotics can modify pathogenic potential of biofilm by suppressing the colonization of periopathogens. The aim of this study was to assess the clinical effect of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus probiotic lozenges, probiotic mouthwash, as an adjuvant to SRP in the treatment of initial to moderate chronic periodontitis. Material and methods Thirty patients with initial to moderate chronic periodontitis were recruited and monitored clinically at baseline (before SRP) and 60 days following SRP. All patients were randomly assigned to experimental group: SRP + probiotic (n = 15) and control group: SRP only (n = 15). The probiotic mouthwash was used twice a day for 60 days. Clinical parameters: the probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL) and bleeding on probing (BOP) were measured at baseline and 60th day following SRP. Data were statistically analyzed using the one-way Anova test and SPSS 19 software (IMB Company, New York, U.S.). The Friedman and Mann Whitney tests were used as a post hoc test for intergroup analysis. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results After 60 days of treatment, the clinical parameters PPD, CAL and BOP were significantly lower in both groups compared to the baseline. In the experimental group, the clinical parameters PPD, CAL and BOP were significantly reduced after 60 days of treatment compared to the initial measurements (p < 0.05). In the control group, statistically significant decrease after 60 days of treatment was recorded only for BOP parameter, while there was no statistically significant decrease of PPD and CAL values (p > 0.05). Conclusion The results of the present study demonstrated clinical benefits of adjunctive use of probiotics to SRP in terms of pocket depth reduction in initial to moderate periodontal disease.

Supercritical CO2 impregnation process was used for the first time to fabricate biodegradable gelatin-chitosan (G/Ch) films containing clove oil (CO) for potential use in active food packaging. All the impregnations were carried out at moderately low temperature (40°C). Aiming to maximize CO loading in the films with acceptable morphological, structural and thermal properties, CO2 pressure, impregnation time and G:Ch mass ratio were varied. Gelatin fraction in the films of 25-50 wt.%, scCO2 pressures of 10-20 MPa and impregnation time of 2-6 h impregnation favoured the CO loading. Processing of the film with equal gelatin to chitosan mass ratio (G/Ch50:50) at 10 MPa for 2 h yielded sufficiently high loading (56 mg CO/gfilm) without an adverse effect on morphological properties. The G/Ch50:50 film was therefore chosen for structural and thermal analyses. ATR-FTIR analysis confirmed successful CO incorporation into the G/Ch50:50 and its interaction with the film. Plasticizing effect of scCO2 and CO on the film was evidenced by DSC. Incorporation of 56 mg CO/gfilm into the G/Ch50:50 didn''t affect thermal stability of the film. Beside environmental benefits, supercritical impregnation process enables fast fabrication of G/Ch bio-composite films containing CO, thermally stable to 110°C, which is suitable for most of food packaging applications. Cellulose acetate films were impregnated with carvacrol using supercritical carbon dioxide. The supercritical impregnation process, conducted in a static regime at pressure of 21 MPa and temperature of 50°C, was optimized by variation in the processing time (30 and 120 min) and decompression rate (from 0.3 MPa/min to 36 MPa/min). Characterization of the obtained cellulose acetate films was performed by Atomic Force Microscopy and Differential Scanning Calorimetry. Effects of glycerol and carvacrol on the properties of the films were discussed. Release kinetics from the cellulose acetate film with 31.4% of carvacrol was investigated in a physiological saline solution. In addition, the Higuchi and Korsmeyer-Peppas release models fitted the carvacrol release curve well. Obtained cellulose acetate films impregnated with carvacrol can be of interest for the application in medicine as wound dressings considering their biocompatibility and biodegradability as well as their potential antimicrobial activity or in the food industry as an active food packaging.

Introduction. The biggest drawback of composite materials is polymerization contraction and the existence of microcracks, therefore the market is now offering a wide variety of new composite materials. The aim of this study was to evaluate the marginal seal using dye method of class V cavities restored with self-etching flowable composite material Vertise Flow polymerized with different light-curing techniques. Material and Methods. The study was conducted on 60 extracted intact human teeth (30 premolars, 30 molars). Two cavities Class V (3×2×2 mm) were prepared in all teeth. Cavities on buccal surfaces were filled with self-etching flowable composite Vertise Flow (Kerr Dental Products), and on lingual with flowable composite Tetric Flow (Ivoclar Vivadent) using the corresponding adhesive systems. Polymerisation was performed using Bluephase Led flashlight C8 (Ivoclar Vivadent). Microleakage was tested using dye in a silver nitrate solution. Dye penetration was measured using stereo loupes with micrometer scale and six times magnification. Results. Linear dye penetration in intact molars restored using the classical polymerization technique and Vertise Flow composite was 3.41 μm while with Tetric Flow it was 4.23 μm. In intact molars restored using soft-start polymerization technique and Vertise Flow the dye penetration was 1.25 μm while for Tetric Flow it was 4.23 µm. Mean dye penetration in intact molars restored using pulse curing technique and material Vertise Flow was 1.02 μm while for the composite Tetric Flow it was 4.35 μm. In intact premolars restored using conventional curing technique and Vertise Flow dye penetration was 1.14 μm while for Tetric Flow it was 3.90 μm. Dye penetration in intact premolars restored using soft-start polymerization technique and Vertise Flow was 0.75 μm while for Tetric Flow it was 3.15 μm. Using a pulse polymerization technique and Vertise Flow in intact premolars dye penetration was 1.45 μm while for Tetric Flow it was 3.76 μm. Conclusion. Vertise Flow, self-etching flowable composite showed better marginal seal than flowable composite resin Tetric Flow. Smaller microcracks with Vertise Flow were confirmed after applying all three light-curing polymerization techniques.

Purpose Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is the most commonly used material in the production of dental prostheses, and its application is often accompanied by the formation of biofilm. The aim of this work was the preparation of a PMMA/gold nanoparticles (AuNps) composite to improve the antimicrobial properties of heat-polymerised PMMA. The AuNPs were synthesised from gold (III) acetate by Ultrasonic Spray Pyrolysis (USP).In the present study, flexural strength and elastic modulus were investigated, as well as thermal conductivity, density and hardness of the PMMA/AuNps` nanocomposite, with different concentrations of AuNps. Flexural strength and elastic modulus were measured using a three-point bending test, and surface hardness was evaluated using the Vickers hardness test. The thermal conductivity of the samples was measured using the Transient Plane Source (TPS) technique. Density was determined by the pycnometry procedure. Statistical analysis was conducted on the data obtained from the experiments. Results The flexural strength and elastic modulus of AuNps/PMMA nanocomposites decreased for all groups containing AuNps. Thermal conductivity and density increased in all groups containing AuNps compared to the control group, but it was not significant in all groups. Vickers hardness values increased significantly with an increase in AuNps` content, with the highest value 21.45 HV obtained at 0.74 wt% of AuNps. Statistical analysis was performed by means of the SPSS 19 software package. Conclusions Incorporation of AuNps into heat-polymerised PMMA resin led to decrease of the flexural strength and elastic modulus. At the same time, the density, thermal conductivity and hardness increased.

- Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of artificial ageing on the retention force of original semipermanent cements, as well as the possibility of using conventional cements for semipermanent cementation with adequate modification of the cementing protocol. Material and methods: Forty CoCrMo alloy crowns were divided in four groups (each group n=10) and fixed with two semipermanent cements (resin-based and glass ionomer-based cements) and one conventional (zinc phosphate), using conventional and modified cementation techniques on titanium abutments. The samples were stored in humid conditions for 24 hours at 37°C and subjected to thermocycling (500 cycles) and mechanical cyclic loading (7 days, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months function simulation). The cast crowns were removed and the retention force was recorded. Results: The highest initial retention force measured was for zinc-phosphate cement - conventional cementing (198,00±61,90 N), followed in descending order by zinc-phosphate cement - modified cementing technique (152,00±45,42 N), long term temporary cement – GC Fuji Temp LT (57,70±20,40 N), and semipermanent cement - Te-lio CS Cem Implant (56,10±18,68 N). After 12 months, the highest retention force measured was for zinc-phosphate cement - conventional cementing (88, 90±14, 45 N), followed by zinc-phosphate cement – modified cementing (48, 15±14,41N), semipermanent cement GC Fuji Temp LT (16,55±3,88 N) and Telio CS Cem Implant (15,55±5,52 N). Conclusions: Zinc-phosphate cement - modified cementing technique and original semipermanent cements can be recommended for conditional permanent cementing of implant supported crowns. Clinical relevance: The use of semipermanent cements and zinc-phosphate cement - modified cementing technique provides a predictable retrievability of implant-supported crowns., Cilj: Željelo se ispitati kakav je utjecaj umjetnoga starenja na retencijsku silu originalnih (polutrajnih) semipermanentnih cemenata i mogućnost upotrebe konvencionalnih cemenata za polutrajno pričvršćivanje, uz odgovarajuću prilagodbu protokola cementiranja. Rezultati: Najvišu inicijalnu retencijsku silu pokazao je cink-fosfatni cement – konvencionalno cementiranje (198,00 ± 61,90 N), a slijede ga u silaznom nizu cink-fosfatni cement – prilagođena tehnika cementiranja (152,00 ± 45,42 N), dugotrajni privremeni cement – GC Fuji LT (57,70 ± 20,40 N) i semipermanentni cement Telio CS (56,10 ± 18,68 N). Poslije 12 mjeseci najviša retencijska sila izmjerena je za cink-fosfatni cement – konvencionalno cementiranje (88, 90 ± 14,45 N), a slijede cink-fosfatni cement – prilagođena tehnika cementiranja (48,15 ± 14,41 N) te semipermanentni cementi GC Fuji Temp LT (16,55 ± 3,88 N) i Telio CS Cem Implant (15,55 ± 5,52 N). Zaključak: Cink-fosfatni cement – prilagođena tehnika cementiranja i originalni polutrajni cementi (semipermanentni) mogu se preporučiti za uvjetno trajno cementiranje krunica postavljenih na implantate jer omogućuje optimalnu mogućnost uklanjanja krunica postavljenih na implantate.

gelatin ,clove oil ,chitosan ,impregnation ,composite film ,supercritical CO2 - Abstract
Supercritical CO2 impregnation process was used for the first time to fabricate biodegradable gelatin-chitosan (G/Ch) films containing clove oil (CO) for potential use in active food packaging. All the impregnations were carried out at moderately low temperature (40 °C). Incorporation of 56 mg CO/gfilm into the G/Ch50:50 didn't affect thermal stability of the film. Beside environmental benefits, supercritical impregnation process enables fast fabrication of G/Ch bio-composite films containing CO, thermally stable to 110 °C, which is suitable for most of food packaging applications. © 2019, CI and CEQ. - Abstract
Obtained cellulose acetate films impregnated with carvacrol can be of interest for the application in medicine as wound dressings considering their biocompatibility and biodegradability as well as their potential antimicrobial activity or in the food industry as an active food packaging., Filmovi acetata celuloze su impregnirani karvakrolom pomoću natkritičnog ugljenik(IV)-oksida.

- Abstract
The goal of this work was to synthesize and characterize ternary rubber blends based on polyisoprene (natural rubber (NR)), polybutadiene rubber (BR), and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) (NR/BR/SBR = 25/25/50) reinforced with different loading silica (SiO2) nanoparticles (0-100 part per hundred parts of rubber (phr)). The specimens were subjected to thermooxidative aging at 100 degrees C, for two times: at 72 and 168 h, respectively, and then mechanically stretched to fracture by tension with a Zwick 1425 (Zwick GmbH, Ulm, Germany) universal tensile testing machine. Rheological and mechanical properties were used as characterization of the ternary rubber blends. The reinforcing performance of the filler was investigated using rheometric, mechanical, and swelling measurements, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance. Hardness, tensile strength, elongation at break, and swelling degree were assessed before and after thermal aging. There was a remarkable decrease in the optimum cure time (t(c90)) and the scorch time (t(s2)), which was associated with a decrease in the cure rate index of (NR/BR/SBR = 25/25/50) ternary rubber blend with 60 phr of filler loading. Interaction between rubber blend and SiO2 nano-filler is confirmed by moving absorption band from 1450 cm(-1) to 1480 cm(-1).

- Abstract
Supercritical CO2 was used as a green solvent and impregnation medium for loading cellulose acetate beads with carvacrol in order to obtain a biomaterial with antibacterial properties. Supercritical solvent impregnation was performed in a high-pressure view cell at temperature of 50 degrees C and pressures of 10, 21, and 30 MPa with the processing time ranging from 2 to 18 h. The rate of impregnation increased with the pressure increase. However, maximum impregnation yield (round 60%) was not affected by the pressure applied. Selected samples of the impregnated cellulose acetate containing 6-60% of carvacrol were proven to have considerable antibacterial effect against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus which causes severe infections in humans and animals. In addition, cellulose acetate beads containing 6.0-33.6% of carvacrol were shown to have a porous structure with submicron pores which is of interest for the controlled delivery applications.

YAG lasers ,TISSUE engineering - Abstract
The unique characteristics of lasers are making this treatment modality minimally invasive technology that offers great advantages when compared to available conventional techniques. Among different laser systems, pulsed-wave solid-state Er:YAG laser was proven to be safe and effective for both, hard and soft tissues procedures, due to its specific wavelength which is superficially absorbed by water. Therefore, Er:YAG laser can be successfully used for incisional and excisional biopsies, frenectomies, ablation of lesions, gingivectomies, gingivoplasties, soft tissue tuberosity reductions, operculum removal and crown lengthening procedures.
