SrRuO$_3$, a ferromagnet with an approximately 160\,K Curie temperature, exhibits a $T^2$ dependent dc resistivity below $\approx$ 30 K. Nevertheless, previous optical studies in the infrared and terahertz range show non-Drude dynamics at low temperatures which seem to contradict a Fermi-liquid picture with long-lived quasiparticles. In this work, we measure the low-frequency THz range response of thin films with residual resistivity ratios, $\rho_{300K}/ \rho_{4K} \approx$ 74. Such low disorder samples allow an unprecedented look at the effects of electron-electron interactions on low-frequency transport. At temperatures below 30 K, we found both a very sharp zero-frequency mode which has a width narrower than $k_BT/\hbar$ as well as a broader zero frequency Lorentzian that has at least an order of magnitude larger scattering rate. Both features have temperature dependencies consistent with a Fermi-liquid with the wider feature explicitly showing a T$^2$ scaling. Such two -Drude transport sheds light on previous reports of the violation of Mathielssen's rule and extreme sensitivity to disorder in metallic ruthenates. We consider a number of possibilities for the origin of the two feature optical conductivity including multiband effects that arise from momentum conserving interband scattering and the approximate conservation of a pseudo-momentum that arises from quasi-1D Fermi surfaces., Comment: main text 5 pages, 3 figures

The transition temperature $T_\textrm{c}$ of unconventional superconductivity is often tunable. For a monolayer of FeSe, for example, the sweet spot is uniquely bound to titanium-oxide substrates. By contrast for La$_{2-\mathrm{x}}$Sr$_\mathrm{x}$CuO$_4$ thin films, such substrates are sub-optimal and the highest $T_\textrm{c}$ is instead obtained using LaSrAlO$_4$. An outstanding challenge is thus to understand the optimal conditions for superconductivity in thin films: which microscopic parameters drive the change in $T_\mathrm{c}$ and how can we tune them? Here we demonstrate, by a combination of x-ray absorption and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectroscopy, how the Coulomb and magnetic-exchange interaction of La$_2$CuO$_4$ thin films can be enhanced by compressive strain. Our experiments and theoretical calculations establish that the substrate producing the largest $T_\textrm{c}$ under doping also generates the largest nearest neighbour hopping integral, Coulomb and magnetic-exchange interaction. We hence suggest optimising the parent Mott state as a strategy for enhancing the superconducting transition temperature in cuprates., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures and 2 tables (including Supplementary Information)

Here we demonstrate how the Fermi surface topology and quantum many-body interactions can be manipulated via epitaxial strain in the spin-triplet superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and its isoelectronic counterpart Ba$_2$RuO$_4$ using oxide molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), \emph{in situ} angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and transport measurements. Near the topological transition of the $\gamma$ Fermi surface sheet, we observe clear signatures of critical fluctuations, while the quasiparticle mass enhancement is found to increase rapidly and monotonically with increasing Ru-O bond distance. Our work demonstrates the possibilities for using epitaxial strain as a disorder-free means of manipulating emergent properties, many-body interactions, and potentially the superconductivity in correlated materials.

We present a comprehensive study of polar and magnetic excitations in BiFeO3 ceramics and a thin film epitaxially grown on an orthorhombic (110) TbScO3 substrate. Infrared reflectivity spectroscopy was performed at temperatures from 5 to 900 K for the ceramics and below room temperature for the thin film. All 13 polar phonons allowed by the factor-group analysis were observed in theceramic samples. The thin-film spectra revealed 12 phonon modes only and an additional weak excitation, probably of spin origin. On heating towards the ferroelectric phase transition near 1100 K, some phonons soften, leading to an increase in the static permittivity. In the ceramics, terahertz transmission spectra show five low-energy magnetic excitations including two which were not previously known to be infrared active; at 5 K, their frequencies are 53 and 56 cm-1. Heating induces softening of all magnetic modes. At a temperature of 5 K, applying an external magnetic field of up to 7 T irreversibly alters the intensities of some of these modes. The frequencies of the observed spin excitations provide support for the recently developed complex model of magnetic interactions in BiFeO3 (R.S. Fishman, Phys. Rev. B 87, 224419 (2013)). The simultaneous infrared and Raman activity of the spin excitations is consistent with their assignment to electromagnons.

We apply ultrafast X-ray diffraction with femtosecond temporal resolution to monitor the lattice dynamics in a thin film of multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ after above-bandgap photoexcitation. The sound-velocity limited evolution of the observed lattice strains indicates a quasi-instantaneous photoinduced stress which decays on a nanosecond time scale. This stress exhibits an inhomogeneous spatial profile evidenced by the broadening of the Bragg peak. These new data require substantial modification of existing models of photogenerated stresses in BiFeO$_3$: the relevant excited charge carriers must remain localized to be consistent with the data.

We report high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission studies of epitaxial thin films of the correlated 4d transition metal oxide ferromagnet SrRuO3. The Fermi surface in the ferromagnetic state consists of well-defined Landau quasiparticles, exhibiting strong coupling to low-energy bosonic modes which contributes to the large effective masses observed by transport and thermodynamic measurements. Upon warming the material through its Curie temperature, we observe a substantial decrease in quasiparticle coherence, but negligible changes in the ferromagnetic exchange splitting, suggesting that local moments play an important role in the ferromagnetism in SrRuO3., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, supplementary information (see other files)

We measure the optical conductivity of (SrMnO3)n/(LaMnO3)2n superlattices (SL) for n=1,3,5, and 8 and 10 < T < 400 K. Data show a T-dependent insulator to metal transition (IMT) for n \leq 3, driven by the softening of a polaronic mid-infrared band. At n = 5 that softening is incomplete, while at the largest-period n=8 compound the MIR band is independent of T and the SL remains insulating. One can thus first observe the IMT in a manganite system in the absence of the disorder due to chemical doping. The magnetic and electronic modifications induced at the interfaces in (SrMnO$_{3}$)$_{n}$/(LaMnO$_{3}$)$_{2n}$ superlattices have been investigated by linear and circular magnetic dichroism in the Mn L$_{2,3}$ x-ray absorption spectra. Together with theoretical calculations, our data demonstrate that the charge redistribution across interfaces favors in-plane ferromagnetic (FM) order and $e_{g}(x^{2}-y^{2})$ orbital occupation, in agreement with the average strain. Far from interfaces, inside LaMnO$_3$, electron localization and local strain favor antiferromagnetism (AFM) and $e_{g}(3z^{2}-r^{2})$ orbital occupation. For $n=1$ the high density of interfacial planes ultimately leads to dominant FM order forcing the residual AFM phase to be in-plane too, while for $n \geq 5$ the FM layers are separated by AFM regions having out-of-plane spin orientation., Comment: accepted for publication as a Rapid Communication in Physical Review B

The resistivity of thin $La_{0.7}A_{0.3}MnO_{3}$ films ($A=Ca, Sr$) is investigated in a wide temperature range. The comparison of the resistivities is made among films grown by different techniques and on several substrates allowing to analyze samples with different amounts of disorder. In the low-temperature nearly half-metallic ferromagnetic state the prominent contribution to the resistivity scales as $T^{\alpha}$ with $\alpha \simeq 2.5$ for intermediate strengths of disorder supporting the theoretical proposal of single magnon scattering in presence of minority spin states localized by the disorder. For large values of disorder the low-temperature behavior of the resistivity is well described by the law $T^{3}$ characteristic of anomalous single magnon scattering processes, while in the regime of low disorder the $\alpha$ exponent tends to a value near 2. In the high temperature insulating paramagnetic phase the resistivity shows the activated behavior characteristic of polaronic carriers. Finally in the whole range of temperatures the experimental data are found to be consistent with a phase separation scenario also in films doped with strontium ($A=Sr$)., Comment: 5 figures

Lightning flash rate can identify areas of convective rainfall when the storms are dominated by ice-phase precipitation. Modeling and observational studies indicate that cloud electrification and microphysics are very closely related and it is of great interest to understand the relationship between lightning and cloud microphysical quantities. Analyzing data from the Lightning Image Sensor (LIS) and the Precipitation Radar (PR), we show a quantitative relationship between microphysical characteristics of thunderclouds and lightning flash rate. We have performed a complete analysis of all data available over the Mediterranean during the TRMM mission and show a range of reflective profiles as a function of lightning activity for both convective and stratiform regimes as well as seasonal variations. Due to the increasing global coverage of lightning detection networks, this kind of study can used to extend the knowledge about thunderstorms and discriminate between different regimes in regions where radar measurements are readilly available.
