A 3-month-old kitten was presented after successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation, including a presumed intracardial injection by its primary care veterinarian. Throughout the subsequent hospitalization in the intensive care unit, the cat exhibited recurrent hemorrhagic pericardial effusions, along with concurrent pleural and abdominal effusions, resulting in multiple clinical deteriorations, necessitating pericardiocentesis and thoracocentesis. Despite more than 3  days of intensive care, the cat experienced another cardiopulmonary arrest with unsuccessful attempts to achieve the return of spontaneous circulation. Necropsy and histopathological findings revealed diffuse chronic)active pericarditis and hemorrhagic pericardial effusion, a condition that has not been documented in the context of cardiopulmonary resuscitation or pericardiocentesis. Simple Summary: Viscoelastic coagulation testing provides an assessment of global coagulation in whole blood, from the beginning of clot formation to clot lysis. A novel bed-side viscoelastic coagulation monitor (VCM) has been developed for use in small animals. The aims of this study were to determine inter-device agreement of two VCM devices, to evaluate the correlation between VCM and rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM), and to determine the accuracy of VCM to diagnose hypo-, normo-, and hypercoagulability. ROTEM analysis was performed using anticoagulated blood and VCM analysis using native blood. Twenty healthy and forty diseased dogs with and without coagulopathies were enrolled. The VCM inter-device agreement was moderate to strong for most of the parameters. Correlation between VCM and ROTEM was moderate to strong for parameters of clotting time and clot strength. The VCM most likely detects true hypocoagulability and thus can reliably rule out hypocoagulability. The VCM has a high sensitivity for diagnosing normocoagulability, but incorrectly classified dogs with abnormal coagulation as normocoagulable. The VCM was not able to detect hypercoagulability. Simple Summary: Bleeding disorders can cause life-threatening illness in dogs. The need for fast recognition and diagnosis of these conditions is therefore of the utmost importance to have a positive impact on the patients' survival. In the past decade, the use of viscoelastic testing for rapid assessment of global haemostasis has gained popularity. However, the most reliable time for testing after blood collection has not been determined. For this reason, blood samples were taken from healthy client-/staff-owned dogs and repeated measurements were performed at three different time points (10 min, 30 min, and 70 min after blood collection). Additionally, a group of currently ill patients was included and Ex-TEM S measurements were performed at the same three timepoints. We found that there was a significant change of results over time, suggesting the need for time-specific reference intervals. Which of these time points reflects the "true" coagulation status of our patients currently remains unknown. Viscoelastic testing as a bedside test to assess global haemostasis has gained popularity in the past decade, with rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) and thromboelastography (TEG) being the two commonly used devices. TEG studies suggest analysis 30 min after blood sampling. However, the reproducibility of results over time for ROTEM analysis using lyophilized samples in dogs has not been established. In this study, we investigated the influence of time on viscoelastic testing, using 33 healthy staff-/client-owned dogs for blood sampling and repeated measurements of ROTEM tracings at three different time points after blood collection. Additionally, a group of 21 hospitalized patients with suspected coagulation disorders were included to investigate whether stability over time was comparable between healthy and ill dogs. We demonstrated a significant difference of ROTEM tracings over time, with a tendency towards hypocoagulability over time. These changes do have a clinical relevance as they exceed reference intervals and could therefore lead to erroneous conclusions about a patient's coagulation status. Background: Angiopoietin‐2 (Ang‐2) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) are regulators of endothelial permeability. Objective: Plasma concentrations of Ang‐2 and VEGF are increased in dogs with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and sepsis and are correlated with disease severity and outcome. Animals: Healthy dogs (n = 18) and client‐owned dogs with SIRS (n = 34) or sepsis (n = 25). Methods: Prospective observational study. Ang‐2 and VEGF concentrations in admission plasma samples were compared between healthy dogs and dogs with SIRS or sepsis, and between survivors and non‐survivors. Correlations with the acute patient physiologic and laboratory evaluation (APPLEfast) disease severity score were examined. Results: Median Ang‐2 was significantly higher in dogs with SIRS (19.3; interquartile range [IQR]: 8.6‐25.7 ng/mL) and sepsis (21.2; IQR: 10.3‐30.1 ng/mL) compared to healthy dogs (7.6; IQR: 6.7‐9.8 ng/mL). Ang‐2 was significantly higher in non‐survivors (24.1; IQR: 11.9‐50.0 ng/mL) than survivors (10.2; IQR: 7.2‐21.5 ng/mL) but did not correlate with the APPLEfast score. Admission Ang‐2 predicted negative outcome in dogs with SIRS and sepsis with reasonable accuracy (area under the curve [AUC]: 0.75, confidence interval [CI]: 0.59‐0.85; sensitivity: 0.5, CI: 0.29‐0.71; specificity: 0.87, CI: 0.75‐0.95); differentiation between sepsis and SIRS was poor (AUC: 0.58). Plasma VEGF was significantly higher in dogs with sepsis (45; IQR: 14‐107.5 pg/mL) than in dogs with SIRS (3.3; IQR: 0‐35.6 pg/mL) or healthy dogs (0; IQR: 0 pg/mL; P = 0.008). VEGF was significantly (P = .0004) higher in non‐survivors (34.5; IQR: 0‐105.7 pg/mL) than in survivors (0; IQR: 0‐55.2 pg/mL). The ability of VEGF to predict a negative outcome was poor.
