We determine the atomic hydrogen (HI) to halo mass relation (HIHM) using Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA survey HI data at the location of optically selected groups from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. We make direct HI detections for 37 GAMA groups. Using HI group spectral stacking of 345 groups, we study the group HI content as function of halo mass across a halo mass range of $10^{11} - 10^{14.7}\text{ M}_\odot$. We also correct our results for Eddington bias. We find that the group HI mass generally rises as a function of halo mass from $1.3\%$ of the halo mass at $10^{11.6} \text{M}_\odot$ to $0.4\%$ at $10^{13.7} \text{M}_\odot$ with some indication of flattening towards the high-mass end. Despite the differences in optical survey limits, group catalogues, and halo mass estimation methods, our results are consistent with previous group HI-stacking studies. We start by creating an H i catalogue at z = 1.321 based on the Semi-Analytic Galaxy Evolution (SAGE) model applied to the UNIT simulations. With this catalogue, we investigate the relation between model H i and the dark matter haloes and we also study the abundance of H i, Omega rm{H small {rm I}}, predicted by this model. We then create synthetic H i IM with a nearest-grid-point approach. In order to simulate the telescope beam effect, a Gaussian smoothing is applied on the plane perpendicular to the line of sight. The effect of foreground removal methods is simulated by exponentially damping the largest wavelength Fourier modes on the radial direction. We study the anisotropic 2-point correlation function (2PCF) ζ(rpdbl, rpdbl) and how it is affected by the aforementioned observational effects. In order to better isolate the BAO signal, we study several 2PCF μ-wedges (with a restricted range of orientations μ) tailored to address the systematics effects and we compare them with different definitions of radial 2PCFs. Finally, we discuss our findings in the context of an SKA-like survey, finding a clear BAO signal in most of the estimators here proposed

We examine how the post-processed content of molecular hydrogen (H$_2$) in galaxies from the TNG100 cosmological, hydrodynamic simulation changes with environment at $z\!=\!0$, assessing central/satellite status and host halo mass. We make close comparisons with the carbon monoxide (CO) emission survey xCOLD GASS where possible, having mock-observed TNG100 galaxies to match the survey's specifications. The detection and identification of biosignatures on planetary bodies such as Mars in situ is extremely challenging. Current knowledge from space exploration missions suggests that a suite of complementary instruments is required in situ for a successful identification of past or present life. For future exploration missions, new and innovative instrumentation capable of high spatial resolution chemical (elemental and isotope) analysis of solids with improved measurement capabilities is of considerable interest because a multitude of potential signatures of extinct or extant life have dimensions on the micrometer scale. The aim of this study is to extend the current measurement capabilities of a miniature laser ablation ionization mass spectrometer (LIMS) designed for space exploration missions to detect signatures of microbial life. In total, 14 martian mudstone analogue samples were investigated regarding their elemental composition. Half the samples were artificially inoculated with a low number density of microbes, and half were used as abiotic controls. The samples were treated in a number of ways. Some were cultured anaerobically and some aerobically; some abiotic samples were incubated with water, and some remained dry. Some of the samples were exposed to a large dose of γ radiation, and some were left un-irradiated. While no significant elemental differences were observed between the applied sample treatments, the instrument showed the capability to detect biogenic element signatures of the inoculated microbes by monitoring biologically relevant elements, such as hydrogen, carbon, sulfur, iron, and so on. When an enrichment in carbon was measured in the samples but no simultaneous increase in other biologically relevant elements was detected, it suggests, for example, a carbon-containing inclusion; when the enrichment was in carbon and in bio-relevant elements, it suggests the presences of microbes. This study presents first results on the detection of biogenic element patterns of microbial life using a miniature LIMS system designed for space exploration missions.

For astronomers to make a significant contribution to the reduction of climate change-inducing greenhouse gas emissions, we first must quantify the sources of our emissions and review the most effective approaches for reducing them. Here we estimate that Australian astronomers’ total greenhouse gas emissions from their regular work activities are ≳25 ktCO2e yr–1 (equivalent kilotonnes of carbon dioxide per year). This can be broken into ~15 ktCO2e yr–1 from supercomputer usage, ~4.2 ktCO2e yr–1 from flights (where individuals’ flight emissions correlate with seniority), >3.3 ktCO2e yr–1 from the operation of observatories, and 2.6 ± 0.4 ktCO2e yr–1 from powering office buildings. Split across faculty scientists, postdoctoral researchers and PhD students, this averages to ≳37 tCO2e yr–1 per astronomer, more than 40% greater than the average Australian non-dependant’s emissions in total, and equivalent to around five times the global average. To combat these environmentally unsustainable practices, we suggest that astronomers should strongly preference the use of supercomputers, observatories and office spaces that are predominantly powered by renewable energy sources. Where current facilities do not meet this requirement, their funders should be lobbied to invest in renewables, such as solar or wind farms. Air travel should also be reduced wherever possible, replaced primarily by video conferencing, which should also promote inclusivity. Australian astronomers generate more greenhouse emissions than the average Australian citizen, thereby exacerbating the climate crisis. By quantifying contributions from different activities such as supercomputing and air travel, as presented here, astronomers can focus on reducing emissions by changing their practices in the most critical areas.

Motivated by an interest in understanding the habitability of aqueous environments on Earth and in extraterrestrial settings, this study investigated the influence of ions in an artificial sodium-magnesium-sulfate-chloride ion system on the growth parameters (lag phase, growth rate, and final cell concentration) of bacteria. These four ions, in different combinations, are key components of many aqueous environments on Earth and elsewhere. We investigated non-halophilic bacteria deliberately to remove the bias of prior adaptations to high concentrations of selected ions so that we could compare the effects of different ions. We tested the hypothesis that water activity determined the growth parameters independent of the ion types. Neither water activity or ionic strength alone could predict growth. However, when ionic strengths were matched, many differences in growth parameters could be explained by the water activity. We suggest that species-specific effects (caused by differences in biochemical and physiological influences), the role of individual ions in cellular processes, and potentially the chaotropicity and kosmotropicity of solutions influenced the growth. Our data show that although extreme combinations of these ions allow for general predictions on the habitability of extraterrestrial aqueous environments, a complex interplay of ionic effects influences the growth and thus the adaptations required for given ion combinations. The data also show that an accurate quantification of the habitability of ocean worlds, such as Europa and Enceladus, can only be made when samples are obtained from these water bodies and the ion combinations are determined.

It is necessary to develop theoretically modelled galaxy catalogues to estimate the expected performance and to optimize the analysis strategy of these surv e ys. We populate two pairs of (1 h -1 Gpc) 3 volume dark matter-only simulations from the UNIT project with galaxies using the Semi-Analytic Galaxy Evolution semi-analytic model of galaxy formation, coupled to the photoionization model GET EMLINES to estimate their H αemission. These catalogues represent a unique suite that includes galaxy formation physics and -thanks to the fixed-pair technique used -an ef fecti ve volume of ∼(5 h -1 Gpc ) 3 , which is several times larger than the Euclid surv e y. We present the performance of these data and create five additional emission-line galaxy (ELG) catalogues by applying a dust-attenuation model as well as adjusting the flux threshold as a function of redshift in order to reproduce Euclid-forecast d N /d z values. As a first application, we study the abundance and clustering of those model H αELGs: For scales greater than ∼5 h -1 Mpc, we find a scale- independent bias with a value of b ∼1 at redshift z ∼0.5, that can increase nearly linearly to b ∼4 at z ∼2, depending on the ELG catalogue. The next generation of galaxy surveys will provide more precise measurements of galaxy clustering than have previously been possible. The 21-cm radio signals that are emitted from neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) gas will be detected by large-area radio surveys such as WALLABY and the SKA, and deliver galaxy positions and velocities that can be used to measure galaxy clustering statistics. But, to harness this information to improve our cosmological understanding, and learn about the physics of dark matter and dark energy, we need to accurately model the manner in which galaxies detected in HI trace the underlying matter distribution of the Universe. For this purpose, we develop a new HI-based Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) model, which makes predictions for the number of galaxies present in dark matter halos conditional on their HI mass. The parameterised HOD model is fit and validated using the Dark Sage semi-analytic model, where we show that the HOD parameters can be modelled by simple linear and quadratic functions of HI mass. However, we also find that the clustering predicted by the HOD depends sensitively on the radial distributions of the HI galaxies within their host dark matter halos, which does not follow the NFW profile in the Dark Sage simulation. As such, this work enables -- for the first time -- a simple prescription for placing galaxies of different HI mass within dark matter halos in a way that is able to reproduce the HI mass-dependent galaxy clustering and HI mass function simultaneously and without requiring knowledge of the optical properties of the galaxies. In this VERTICO science paper we aim to study how the star formation process depends on galactic environment and gravitational interactions in the context of galaxy evolution. We explore the scaling relation between the star formation rate (SFR) surface density and the molecular gas surface density, also known as the Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relation, in a subsample of Virgo cluster spiral galaxies. We use new ACA and TP observations from the VERTICO-ALMA Large Program at 720pc resolution to resolve the molecular gas content, as traced by the 12CO(2-1) transition, across the disks of 37 spiral galaxies in the Virgo cluster. In combination with archival observations, we estimate the parameters of the KS relation for the entire ensemble of galaxies, and within individual galaxies. We find the KS slope for the entire population to be N=0.97+/-0.07, with a characteristic molecular gas depletion time of 1.86Gyr for our full sample, in agreement with previous work in isolated star-forming galaxies. In individual galaxies, we find KS slopes ranging between 0.69 and 1.40, and typical star formation efficiencies (SFE) that can vary from galaxy to galaxy by a factor of ~4. These galaxy-to-galaxy variations account for ~0.20dex in scatter in the ensemble KS relation, which is characterized by a 0.42dex scatter. We find that the HI-deficient galaxies in the Virgo cluster show a steeper resolved KS relation and lower molecular gas efficiencies than HI-normal cluster galaxies. While the molecular gas content in Virgo cluster galaxies appears to behave similarly to that in isolated galaxies, our VERTICO sample shows that cluster environments play a key role in regulating star formation. The environmental mechanisms affecting the HI galaxy content also have a direct impact in the SFE of molecular gas in cluster galaxies, leading to longer depletion times in HI-deficient members., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Black hole feedback has been widely implemented as the key recipe to quench star formation in massive galaxies in modern semi-analytic models and hydrodynamical simulations. As the theoretical details surrounding the accretion and feedback of black holes continue to be refined, various feedback models have been implemented across simulations, with notable differences in their outcomes. Yet, most of these simulations have successfully reproduced some observations, such as stellar mass function and star formation rate density in the local Universe. We use the recent observation on the change of neutral hydrogen gas mass (including both ${\rm H_2}$ and ${\rm HI}$) with star formation rate of massive central disc galaxies as a critical constraint of black hole feedback models across several simulations. We find that the predictions of IllustrisTNG agree with the observations much better than the other models tested in this work. This favors IllustrisTNG's treatment of active galactic nuclei - where kinetic winds are driven by black holes at low accretion rates - as more plausible amongst those we test. In turn, this also indirectly supports the idea that the massive central disc galaxy population in the local Universe was likely quenched by AGN feedback., Comment: 15 pages, 3+4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We employ the EAGLE hydrodynamical simulation to uncover the relationship between cluster environment and $\rm H_2$ content of star-forming galaxies at redshifts spanning $0\leq z\leq 1$. To do so, we divide the star-forming sample into those that are bound to clusters and those that are not. We find that, at any given redshift, the galaxies in clusters generally have less $\rm H_2$ than their non-cluster counterparts with the same stellar mass (corresponding to an offset of $\lesssim 0.5$ dex), but this offset varies with stellar mass and is virtually absent at $M_\star\lesssim10^{9.3}~{\rm M}_\odot$. The $\rm H_2$ deficit in star-forming cluster galaxies can be traced back to a decline in their $\rm H_2$ content that commenced after first infall into a cluster, which occurred later than a typical cluster galaxy. Evolution of the full cluster population after infall is generally consistent with `slow-then-rapid' quenching, but galaxies with $M_\star\lesssim 10^{9.5}~{\rm M}_\odot$ exhibit rapid quenching. Unlike most cluster galaxies, star-forming ones were not pre-processed in groups prior to being accreted by clusters. For both of these cluster samples, the star formation efficiency remained oblivious to the infall. We track the particles associated with star-forming cluster galaxies and attribute the drop in $\rm H_2$ mass after infall to poor replenishment, depletion due to star formation, and stripping of $\rm H_2$ in cluster environments. These results provide predictions for future surveys, along with support and theoretical insights for existing molecular gas observations that suggest there is less $\rm H_2$ in cluster galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

In-person and online conferences each have their benefits, with hybrid conferences intended to blend the best of both worlds. But do hybrid conferences fulfil the promise? Fifteen attendees across three global conferences share their collective experiences.

We present the Virgo Environment Traced in CO (VERTICO) survey, a new effort to map $^{12}$CO($2-1$), $^{13}$CO($2-1$), and C$^{18}$O($2-1$) in 51 Virgo Cluster galaxies with the Atacama Compact Array, part of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The primary motivation of VERTICO is to understand the physical mechanisms that perturb molecular gas disks, and therefore star formation and galaxy evolution, in dense environments. This first paper contains an overview of VERTICO's design and sample selection, $^{12}$CO($2-1$) observations, and data reduction procedures. We characterize global $^{12}$CO($2-1$) fluxes and molecular gas masses for the 49 detected VERTICO galaxies, provide upper limits for the two non-detections, and produce resolved $^{12}$CO($2-1$) data products (median resolution $= 8^{\prime\prime} \approx 640~{\rm pc}$). Azimuthally averaged $^{12}$CO($2-1$) radial intensity profiles are presented along with derived molecular gas radii. We demonstrate the scientific power of VERTICO by comparing the molecular gas size--mass scaling relation for our galaxies with a control sample of field galaxies, highlighting the strong effect that radius definition has on this correlation. We discuss the drivers of the form and scatter in the size--mass relation and highlight areas for future work. VERTICO is an ideal resource for studying the fate of molecular gas in cluster galaxies and the physics of environment-driven processes that perturb the star formation cycle. We measure the molecular-to-atomic gas ratio, R mol, and the star formation rate (SFR) per unit molecular gas mass, SFEmol, in 38 nearby galaxies selected from the Virgo Environment Traced in CO (VERTICO) survey. We stack ALMA 12CO (J = 2−1) spectra coherently using H i velocities from the VIVA survey to detect faint CO emission out to galactocentric radii r gal ∼ 1.2 r 25. We determine the scale lengths for the molecular and stellar components, finding a ∼3:5 relation compared to ∼1:1 in field galaxies, indicating that the CO emission is more centrally concentrated than the stars. We compute R mol as a function of different physical quantities. While the spatially resolved R mol on average decreases with increasing radius, we find that the mean molecular-to-atomic gas ratio within the stellar effective radius R e , R mol(r < R e ), shows a systematic increase with the level of H i, truncation and/or asymmetry (HI perturbation). Analysis of the molecular- and the atomic-to-stellar mass ratios within R e , R ⋆ mol ( r < R e ) and R ⋆ atom ( r < R e ) , shows that VERTICO galaxies have increasingly lower R ⋆ atom ( r < R e ) for larger levels of HI perturbation (compared to field galaxies matched in stellar mass), but no significant change in R ⋆ m o l ( r < R e ) . We also measure a clear systematic decrease of the SFEmol within R e , SFEmol(r < Re ), with increasingly perturbed H i. Therefore, compared to field galaxies from the field, VERTICO galaxies are more compact in CO emission in relation to their stellar distribution, but increasingly perturbed atomic gas increases their R mol and decreases the efficiency with which their molecular gas forms stars.

The term "habitability" is pervasive throughout the space sciences and astrobiology literature and is broadly used to describe an environment's ability to support life. Here, we argue that, while it is fundamentally a binary matter whether an organism can persist in an environment or not, these binary assessments lead to continuous ecological measurements that are often collected under the umbrella term "habitability" by astrobiologists. Although the use of habitability in this way has provided a framework for those studying the potential of environments to support life, including comparative analyses between terrestrial and extraterrestrial environments, it can also generate confusion and limit interdisciplinary understanding. Namely, differing ecological metrics used as proxies for habitability can yield differing conclusions depending upon the metrics chosen. Therefore, we suggest that in this continuous sense, the terms habitable and habitability lose meaning unless the specific scientific question and biological metric chosen to address it are defined. As a corollary, the search for universal single metrics to make habitability assessments is not to be encouraged, and as we argue, attempting to do so would oversimply analyses of the ability of environments to support life.

P., We present the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) WALLABY pre-pilot observations of two 'dark' H i sources (with H i masses of a few times 108 {M}_\odot and no known stellar counterpart) that reside within 363 kpc of NGC 1395, the most massive early-type galaxy in the Eridanus group of galaxies. We investigate whether these 'dark' H i sources have resulted from past tidal interactions or whether they are an extreme class of low surface brightness galaxies. Our results suggest that both scenarios are possible, and not mutually exclusive. The two 'dark' H i sources are compact, reside in relative isolation, and are more than 159 kpc away from their nearest H i-rich galaxy neighbour. Regardless of origin, the H i sizes and masses of both 'dark' H i sources are consistent with the H i size-mass relationship that is found in nearby low-mass galaxies, supporting the possibility that these H i sources are an extreme class of low surface brightness galaxies. We identified three analogues of candidate primordial 'dark' H i galaxies within the TNG100 cosmological, hydrodynamic simulation. All three model analogues are dark matter dominated, have assembled most of their mass 12-13 Gyr ago, and have not experienced much evolution until cluster infall 1-2 Gyr ago. We analytically derive the observed size-mass relation of galaxies' atomic hydrogen (HI), including limits on its scatter, based on simple assumptions about the structure of HI discs. We trial three generic profiles for HI surface density as a function of radius. Firstly, we assert that HI surface densities saturate at a variable threshold, and otherwise fall off exponentially with radius or, secondly, radius squared. Our third model assumes the total gas surface density is exponential, with the HI fraction at each radius depending on local pressure. These are tested against a compilation of 110 galaxies from the THINGS, LITTLE THINGS, LVHIS, and Bluedisk surveys, whose HI surface density profiles are well resolved. All models fit the observations well and predict consistent size-mass relations. Using an analytical argument, we explain why processes that cause gas disc truncation - such as ram-pressure stripping - scarcely affect the HI size-mass relation. This is tested with the IllustrisTNG(100) cosmological, hydrodynamic simulation and the Dark Sage semi-analytic model of galaxy formation, both of which capture radially resolved disc structure. For galaxies with m_*>10^9 M_solar and m_HI>10^8 M_solar, both simulations predict HI size-mass relations that align with observations, show no difference between central and satellite galaxies, and show only a minor, second-order dependence on host halo mass for satellites. Ultimately, the universally tight HI size-mass relation is mathematically inevitable and robust. Short-term and long-term science plans were developed as part of the strategic planning process used by the Biologic Analog Science Associated with Lava Terrains (BASALT) science team to conduct two Mars-simulation missions investigating basalt habitability at terrestrial volcanic analog sites in 2016. A multidisciplinary team of scientists generated and codified a range of scientific hypotheses distilled into a Science Traceability Matrix (STM) that defined the set of objectives pursued in a series of extravehicular activity (EVA) campaigns performed across multiple field deployments. This STM was used to guide the pre-deployment selection of sampling stations within the selected Mars analog sites on the Earth based on precursor site information such as multispectral imagery. It also informed selection of hand-held instruments and observational data to collect during EVA to aid sample selection through latency-impacted interaction with an Earth-based Science Support Team. A significant portion of the pre-deployment strategic planning activities were devoted to station selection, ultimately the locations used for sample collection and EVA planning. During development of the EVAs, the BASALT science team identified lessons learned that could be used to inform future missions and analog activities, including the critical need for high-resolution precursor imagery that would enable the selection of stations that could meet the scientific objectives outlined in the STM.

Field research target regions within two basaltic geologic provinces are described as Earth analogs to Mars. Regions within the eastern Snake River Plain of Idaho and the Big Island of Hawai‘i, the United States, provinces that represent analogs of present-day and early Mars, respectively, were evaluated on the basis of geologic settings, rock lithology and geochemistry, rock alteration, and climate. Each of these factors provides rationale for the selection of specific targets for field research in five analog target regions: (1) Big Craters and (2) Highway lava flows at Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve, Idaho, and (3) Mauna Ulu low shield, (4) Kīlauea Iki lava lake, and (5) Kīlauea caldera in the Kīlauea Volcano summit region and the East Rift Zone of Hawai‘i. Our evaluation of compositional and textural attributes, as well as the effects of syn- and posteruptive rock alteration, shows that basaltic terrains in Idaho and Hawai‘i provide a way to characterize the geology and major geologic substrates that host biological activity of relevance to Mars exploration. This work provides the foundation to better understand the scientific questions related to the habitability of basaltic terrains, the rationale behind selecting analog field targets, and their applicability as analogs to Mars.

Biologic Analog Science Associated with Lava Terrains (BASALT) is a science-driven exploration program seeking to determine the best tools, techniques, training requirements, and execution strategies for conducting Mars-relevant field science under spaceflight mission conditions. BASALT encompasses Science, Science Operations, and Technology objectives. This article outlines the BASALT Science Operations background, strategic research questions, study design, and a portion of the results from the second field test. BASALT field tests are used to iteratively develop, integrate, test, evaluate, and refine new concepts of operations (ConOps) and capabilities that enable efficient and productive science. This article highlights the ConOps investigated during BASALT in light of future planetary extravehicular activity (EVA), which will focus on scientific exploration and discovery, and serves as an introduction to integrating exploration flexibility with operational rigor, the value of tactical and strategic science planning and execution, and capabilities that enable and enhance future science EVA operations.

Science-driven, human spaceflight missions of the future will rely on regular and interactive communication between Earth- and space-based teams during activity in which astronauts work directly on Mars or other planetary surfaces (extravehicular activity, EVA). The Biologic Analog Science Associated with Lava Terrains (BASALT) project conducted simulated human missions to Mars, complete with realistic one-way light time (OWLT) communication latency. We discuss the modes of communication used by the Mars- and Earth-based teams, including text, audio, video, and still imagery. Real-time communication between astronauts in the field (extravehicular, EV) and astronauts in a communication relay station (intravehicular, IV) was broadcast over OWLT, providing important contextual information to the Science Backroom Team (SBT) in Mission Control. Collaborative communication between the Earth- and Mars-based teams, however, requires active communication across latency via the Mission Log. We provide descriptive statistics of text communication between IV and SBT in a high-fidelity, scientifically driven analog for human space exploration. Over an EVA, the SBT sent an average of ∼23 text messages containing recommendations, requests, and answers to questions, while the science-focused IV crew member (IV2) sent an average of ∼38 text messages. Though patterns varied, communication between the IV and SBT teams tended to be highest during ∼50–150 min into the EVA, corresponding to the candidate sample search and presampling instrument survey phases, and then decreased dramatically after minute ∼200 during the sample collection phase. Generally, the IV2 and SBT used ∼4.6 min to craft a reply to a direct question or comment, regardless of message length or OWLT, offering a valuable glimpse into actual time-to-reply. We discuss IV2-SBT communication within the context of case examples from an EVA during which communication failures affected operations in the field. Finally, we offer recommendations for communication practices for use in future analogs and, perhaps, science-driven human spaceflight.

The articles associated with this Special Collection focus on the NASA BASALT (Biologic Analog Science Associated with Lava Terrains) Research Program, which aims at answering the question, “How do we support and enable scientific exploration during human Mars missions?” To answer this the BASALT team conducted scientific field studies under simulated Mars mission conditions to both broaden our understanding of the habitability potential of basalt-rich terrains on Mars and examine the effects of science on current Mars mission concepts of operations. This article provides an overview of the BASALT research project, from the science, to the operational concepts that were tested and developed, to the technical capabilities that supported all elements of the team's research. Further, this article introduces the 12 articles that are included in this Special Collection.

A major objective in the exploration of Mars is to test the hypothesis that the planet hosted life. Even in the absence of life, the mapping of habitable and uninhabitable environments is an essential task in developing a complete understanding of the geological and aqueous history of Mars and, as a consequence, understanding what factors caused Earth to take a different trajectory of biological potential. We carried out the aseptic collection of samples and comparison of the bacterial and archaeal communities associated with basaltic fumaroles and rocks of varying weathering states in Hawai'i to test four hypotheses concerning the diversity of life in these environments. Using high-throughput sequencing, we found that all these materials are inhabited by a low-diversity biota. Multivariate analyses of bacterial community data showed a clear separation between sites that have active fumaroles and other sites that comprised relict fumaroles, unaltered, and syn-emplacement basalts. Contrary to our hypothesis that high water flow environments, such as fumaroles with active mineral leaching, would be sites of high biological diversity, alpha diversity was lower in active fumaroles compared to relict or nonfumarolic sites, potentially due to high-temperature constraints on microbial diversity in fumarolic sites. A comparison of these data with communities inhabiting unaltered and weathered basaltic rocks in Idaho suggests that bacterial taxon composition of basaltic materials varies between sites, although the archaeal communities were similar in Hawai'i and Idaho. The taxa present in both sites suggest that most of them obtain organic carbon compounds from the atmosphere and from phototrophs and that some of them, including archaeal taxa, cycle fixed nitrogen. The low diversity shows that, on Earth, extreme basaltic terrains are environments on the edge of sustaining life with implications for the biological potential of similar environments on Mars and their exploration by robots and humans.

Measuring the HI-halo mass scaling relation (HIHM) is fundamental to understanding the role of HI in galaxy formation and its connection to structure formation. While direct measurements of the HI mass in haloes are possible using HI-spectral stacking, the reported shape of the relation depends on the techniques used to measure it (e.g. monotonically increasing with mass versus flat, mass-independent). Using a simulated HI and optical survey produced with the SHARK semi-analytic galaxy formation model, we investigate how well different observational techniques can recover the intrinsic, theoretically predicted, HIHM relation. We run a galaxy group finder and mimic the HI stacking procedure adopted by different surveys and find we can reproduce their observationally derived HIHM relation. However, none of the adopted techniques recover the underlying HIHM relation predicted by the simulation. We find that systematic effects in halo mass estimates of galaxy groups modify the inferred shape of the HIHM relation from the intrinsic one in the simulation, while contamination by interloping galaxies, not associated with the groups, contribute to the inferred HI mass of a halo mass bin, when using large velocity windows for stacking. The effect of contamination is maximal at Mvir~10^(12-12.5)Msol. Stacking methods based on summing the HI emission spectra to infer the mean HI mass of galaxies of different properties belonging to a group suffer minimal contamination but are strongly limited by the use of optical counterparts, which miss the contribution of dwarf galaxies. Deep spectroscopic surveys will provide significant improvements by going deeper while maintaining high spectroscopic completeness; for example, the WAVES survey will recover ~52% of the total HI mass of the groups with Mvir~10^(14)Msol compared to ~21% in GAMA., 20 pages,16 figures. We present results from neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) observations of Hydra I, the first cluster observed by the Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey (WALLABY) on the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder. For the first time we show that WALLABY can reach its final survey sensitivity. Leveraging the sensitivity, spatial resolution and wide field of view of WALLABY, we identify a galaxy, ESO 501-G075, that lies near the virial radius of Hydra I and displays an HI tail. ESO 501-G075 shows a similar level of morphological asymmetry as another cluster member, which lies near the cluster centre and shows signs of experiencing ram pressure. We investigate possible environmental processes that could be responsible for producing the observed disturbance in the HI morphology of ESO 501-G075. We rule out tidal interactions, as ESO 501-G075 has no nearby neighbours within $\sim0.34$Mpc. We use a simple model to determine that ram pressure can remove gas from the disc at radii $r\gtrsim25$kpc. We conclude that, as ESO 501-G075 has a typical HI mass compared to similar galaxies in the field and its morphology is compatible with a ram pressure scenario, ESO 501-G075 is likely recently infalling into the cluster and in the early stages of experiencing ram pressure., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

To search more efficiently for a record of past life on Mars, it is critical to know where to look and thus maximize the likelihood of success. Large-scale site selection for the Mars 2020 mission has been completed, but small (meter to 10 cm)-scale relationships of microenvironments will not be known until the rover reaches the surface. Over a 2 m transect at a modern volcanic deposit on the flank of Askja volcano in the barren highlands of Iceland, we compared two biological indicators (ATP activity and 16SrRNA amplicon sequence composition) to physical characteristics including bulk chemical composition, spectral signatures of mineralogy, and grain size. Using analytical instrumentation analogous to those available on Mars rovers, we were able to characterize the geological setting of the deposits and link physical parameters to microbial abundance and diversity. In general, methanogenesis, methanotrophy/methylotrophy, and nitrate reduction were the functional traits most associated with microbial community shift along the transect. Core microbiome members tended to be associated with nitrate reduction, and relative abundance of core microbes was strongly related to free water in the deposit. Community compositional shift of the rare microbiome was related to microenvironmental changes such as change in grain size, geochemistry, and age of deposit. These correlations lead us to suggest a sampling strategy that accounts for Martian geology, looking for undisturbed (not remobilized) explosive volcanic ash below pumice that could maximize diversity and abundance of different bioindicators. Our study also illustrates the importance of studying the variability across microenvironments in low biomass settings on earth.

This study investigated what defines the limits of life in mixed ion solutions. Better understanding these limits should allow us to better predict the habitability of extreme environments on the Earth and extraterrestrial environments. We systematically examined the response of Bacillus subtilis, a well characterized non-halophile model organism, to a range of solutions made from single and mixed salts up to their solubility limits and measured at what concentration growth was arrested, specifically exploring Na, Mg, and Ca cations and Cl, SO4, and ClO4 anions. We measured the physicochemical properties of the solutions to identify which properties correlated with the limits of growth. Individual salts imposed a growth limit specific to the combinationof cation and anion, although we generally observe that chloride salts allow growth at lower water activity than sulfate salts, with perchlorate restricting growth even at the highest measured water activity. Growth was limited at a wide range of ionic strength, with no apparently correlation. Despite the theoretically counteracting disordering effects (chaotropic) of perchlorates and ordering effects (kosmotropic) effects of sulfates, when these salts were combined they instead additively narrowed the window for growth in both the Na and Mg cation systems, in the same manner as the combined effects of two chaotropic Ca salts. Our results imply that away from hard limits that might be imposedby physicochemical properties such as water activity, ionic strength or chaotropicity in highly concentrated brines, these properties do not set the limits of life. Instead these limits are highly specific to the salts and organisms in question. This specificity means that the habitability of extreme environments cannot be predicted, even with accurate measurements of the physicochemical conditions present.

We explore the connection between the atomic gas fraction, f_atm, and `global disc stability' parameter, q, of galaxies within a fully cosmological context by examining galaxies in the Dark Sage semi-analytic model. The q parameter is determined by the ratio of disc specific angular momentum to mass. Dark Sage is well suited to our study, as it includes the numerical evolution of one-dimensional disc structure, making both j_disc and q predicted quantities. We show that Dark Sage produces a clear correlation between gas fraction and j_disc at fixed disc mass, in line with recent results from observations and hydrodynamic simulations. This translates to a tight q--f_atm sequence for star-forming central galaxies, which closely tracks the analytic prediction of Obreschkow et al. The scatter in this sequence is driven by the probability distribution function of mass as a function of j (PDF of j) within discs, specifically where it peaks. We find that halo mass is primarily responsible for the peak location of the PDF of j, at least for low values of q. Two main mechanisms of equal significance are then identified for disconnecting f_atm from q. Mergers in the model can trigger quasar winds, with the potential to blow out most of the gas disc, while leaving the stellar disc relatively unharmed. Ram-pressure stripping of satellite galaxies has a similar effect, where f_atm can drop drastically with only a minimal effect to q. We study the present-day connection between galaxy morphology and angular momentum using the {\sc Dark Sage} semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. For galaxies between $ 10^{11}-10^{12} \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ in stellar mass, the model successfully predicts the observed trend whereby galaxies with more prominent disks exhibit higher {\em stellar} disk specific angular momentum ($j_{\rm stellar, disk}$) at fixed stellar mass. However, when we include the gas in the disk, bulge-dominated galaxies have the highest {\em total} disk specific angular momentum ($j_{\rm total, disk}$). We attribute this to a large contribution from an extended disk of cold gas in typical bulge-dominated galaxies. We find the relationship between $j_{\rm dark matter}$ and morphology to be quite complex. Surprisingly, in this stellar mass range, not only do bulge-dominated galaxies tend to live in halos with higher $j_{\rm dark matter}$ than disk-dominated galaxies, but intermediate galaxies (those with roughly equal fractions of bulge and disk mass) have the lowest $j_{\rm dark matter}$ of all. Yet, when controlling for halo mass, rather than stellar mass, the relationship between $j_{\rm dark matter}$ and morphology vanishes. Based on these results, halo mass rather than angular momentum is the main driver of the predicted morphology sequence at high masses. We conducted an analog sampling expedition under simulated mission constraints to areas dominated by basaltic tephra of the Eldfell and Fimmvörðuháls lava fields (Iceland). Sites were selected to be “homogeneous” at a coarse remote sensing resolution (10–100 m) in apparent color, morphology, moisture, and grain size, with best-effort realism in numbers of locations and replicates. Three different biomarker assays (counting of nucleic-acid-stained cells via fluorescent microscopy, a luciferin/luciferase assay for adenosine triphosphate, and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) to detect DNA associated with bacteria, archaea, and fungi) were characterized at four nested spatial scales (1 m, 10 m, 100 m, and >1 km) by using five common metrics for sample site representativeness (sample mean variance, group F tests, pairwise t tests, and the distribution-free rank sum H and u tests). Correlations between all assays were characterized with Spearman's rank test. The bioluminescence assay showed the most variance across the sites, followed by qPCR for bacterial and archaeal DNA; these results could not be considered representative at the finest resolution tested (1 m). Cell concentration and fungal DNA also had significant local variation, but they were homogeneous over scales of >1 km. These results show that the selection of life detection assays and the number, distribution, and location of sampling sites in a low biomass environment with limited a priori characterization can yield both contrasting and complementary results, and that their interdependence must be given due consideration to maximize science return in future biomarker sampling expeditions. It uses the widefield, high-resolution capability of the Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), a radio interferometer consisting of 36 × 12 -m dishes equipped with Phased-Array Feeds (PAFs), located in an extremely radio-quiet zone in Western Australia. wallaby aims to survey three-quarters of the sky (− 90 < δ< + 30 ) to a redshift of z≲ 0.26 , and generate spectral line image cubes at ∼30 arcsec resolution and ∼1.6 mJy beam per 4 km s channel sensitivity. ASKAP’s instantaneous field of view at 1.4 GHz, delivered by the PAF’s 36 beams, is about 30 sq deg. At an integrated signal-to-noise ratio of five, wallaby is expected to detect around half a million galaxies with a mean redshift of z∼ 0.05 (∼200 Mpc). The scientific goals of wallaby include: (a) a census of gas-rich galaxies in the vicinity of the Local Group; (b) a study of the H i properties of galaxies, groups and clusters, in particular the influence of the environment on galaxy evolution; and (c) the refinement of cosmological parameters using the spatial and redshift distribution of low-bias gas-rich galaxies. For context we provide an overview of recent and planned large-scale H i surveys. Observations of the cold neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) in and around disc galaxies have revealed that spatial and kinematic asymmetries are commonplace, and are reflected in the global HI spectra. We use the TNG100 box from the IllustrisTNG suite of cosmological simulations to study the conditions under which these asymmetries may arise in current theoretical galaxy formation models. We find that more than 50% of the sample has at least a 10% difference in integrated flux between the high- and low-velocity half of the spectrum, thus the typical TNG100 galaxy has an HI profile that is not fully symmetric. We find that satellite galaxies are a more asymmetric population than centrals, consistent with observational results. Using halo mass as a proxy for environment, this trend appears to be driven by the satellite population within the virial radius of haloes more massive than $10^{13} M_{\odot}$, typical of medium/large groups. We show that, while the excess of HI asymmetry in group satellites is likely driven by ram pressure, the bulk of the asymmetric HI profiles observed in TNG100 are driven by physical processes able to affect both the central and satellite populations. Discovery of a remnant habitable environment by the Mars Science Laboratory in the sedimentary record of Gale Crater has reinvigorated the search for evidence of martian life. In this study, we used a simulated martian mudstone material, based on data from Gale Crater, that was inoculated and cultured over several months and then dried and pressed. The simulated mudstone was analysed with a range of techniques to investigate the detectability of biosignatures. Cell counting and DNA extraction showed a diverse but low biomass microbial community that was highly dispersed. Pellets were analysed with bulk Elemental Analysis – Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (EA-IRMS), high-resolution Laser-ablation Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (LIMS), Raman spectroscopy and Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR) spectroscopy, which are all techniques of relevance to current and future space missions. Bulk analytical techniques were unable to differentiate between inoculated samples and abiotic controls, despite total levels of organic carbon comparable with that of the martian surface. Raman spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy and LIMS, which are high sensitivity techniques that provide chemical information at high spatial resolution, retrieved presumptive biosignatures but these remained ambiguous and the sedimentary matrix presented challenges for all techniques. This suggests challenges for detecting definitive evidence for life, both in the simulated lacustrine environment via standard microbiological techniques and in the simulated mudstone via analytical techniques with relevance to robotic missions. Our study suggests that multiple co-incident high-sensitivity techniques that can scan the same micrometre-scale spots are required to unambiguously detect biosignatures, but the spatial coverage of these techniques needs to be high enough not to miss individual cellular-scale structures in the matrix.

During the BASALT research program, real (nonsimulated) geological and biological science was accomplished through a series of extravehicular activities (EVAs) under simulated Mars mission conditions. These EVAs were supported by a Mission Support Center (MSC) that included an on-site, colocated Science Support Team (SST). The SST was composed of scientists from a variety of disciplines and operations researchers who provided scientific and technical expertise to the crew while each EVA was being conducted (intra-EVA). SST management and organization developed under operational conditions that included Mars-like communication latencies, bandwidth constraints, and EVA plans that were infused with Mars analog field science objectives. This paper focuses on the SST workspace considerations such as science team roles, physical layout, communication interactions, operational techniques, and work support technology. Over the course of BASALT field deployments to Idaho and Hawai‘i, the SST team made several changes of note to increase both productivity and efficiency. For example, new roles were added for more effective management of technical discussions, and the layout of the SST workspace evolved multiple times during the deployments. SST members' reflexive adjustments resulted in a layout that prioritized face-to-face discussions over face-to-data displays, highlighting the importance of interpersonal communication during SST decision-making. In tandem with these workspace adjustments, a range of operational techniques were developed to help the SST manage discussions and information flow under time pressure.

The Biologic Analog Science Associated with Lava Terrains (BASALT) research project is investigating tools, techniques, and strategies for conducting Mars scientific exploration extravehicular activity (EVA). This has been accomplished through three science-driven terrestrial field tests (BASALT-1, BASALT-2, and BASALT-3) during which the iterative development, testing, assessment, and refinement of concepts of operations (ConOps) and capabilities were conducted. ConOps are the instantiation of operational design elements that guide the organization and flow of personnel, communication, hardware, software, and data products to enable a mission concept. Capabilities include the hardware, software, data products, and protocols that comprise and enable the ConOps. This paper describes the simulation quality and acceptability of the Mars-forward ConOps evaluated during BASALT-2. It also presents the level of mission enhancement and acceptability of the associated Mars-forward capabilities. Together, these results inform science operations for human planetary exploration.

Recently a number of studies have found a similarity between the passive fraction of central and satellite galaxies when controlled for both stellar and halo mass. These results suggest that the quenching processes that affect galaxies are largely agnostic to central/satellite status, which contradicts the traditional picture of increased satellite quenching via environmental processes such as stripping, strangulation and starvation. Here we explore this further using the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey which extends to ~2dex lower in stellar mass than SDSS, is more complete for closely-separated galaxies (>95% compared to >70%), and identifies lower-halo-mass groups outside of the very local Universe (M$_{\mathrm{halo}}\sim10^{12}$M$_{\odot}$ at $0.1, Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, MNRAS accepted

The deep subsurface of other planetary bodies is of special interest for robotic and human exploration. The subsurface provides access to planetary interior processes, thus yielding insights into planetary formation and evolution. On Mars, the subsurface might harbour the most habitable conditions. In the context of human exploration, the subsurface can provide refugia for habitation from extreme surface conditions. We describe the fifth Mine Analogue Research (MINAR 5) programme at 1 km depth in the Boulby Mine, UK in collaboration with Spaceward Bound NASA and the Kalam Centre, India, to test instruments and methods for the robotic and human exploration of deep environments on the Moon and Mars. The geological context in Permian evaporites provides an analogue to evaporitic materials on other planetary bodies such as Mars. A wide range of sample acquisition instruments (NASA drills, Small Planetary Impulse Tool (SPLIT) robotic hammer, universal sampling bags), analytical instruments (Raman spectroscopy, Close-Up Imager, Minion DNA sequencing technology, methane stable isotope analysis, biomolecule and metabolic life detection instruments) and environmental monitoring equipment (passive air particle sampler, particle detectors and environmental monitoring equipment) was deployed in an integrated campaign. Investigations included studying the geochemical signatures of chloride and sulphate evaporitic minerals, testingAnalog researchastrobiologyMarssubsurfacetechnology methods for life detection and planetary protection around human-tended operations, and investigations on the radiation environment of the deep subsurface. The MINAR analogue activity occurs in an active mine, showing how the development of space exploration technology can be used to contribute to addressing immediate Earth-based challenges. During the campaign, in collaboration with European Space Agency (ESA), MINAR was used for astronaut familiarization with future exploration tools and techniques. The campaign was used to develop primary and secondary school and primary to secondary transition curriculum materials on-site during the campaign which was focused on a classroom extra vehicular activity simulation., We thank the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) for their support of the Boulby Underground Science Facility in which MINAR5wasconducted.
