Three-dimensional in-vivo dose verification is one of the standing challenges in radiation therapy. X-ray-induced acoustic tomography has recently been proposed as an imaging method for use in in-vivo dosimetry. The aim of this study was to investigate the accuracy of reconstructing three-dimensional (3D) absolute dose using x-ray-induced acoustic tomography. We performed this investigation using two different tomographic dose reconstruction techniques.Two examples of 3D dose reconstruction techniques for x-ray acoustic imaging are investigated. Dose distributions are calculated for varying field sizes using a clinical treatment planning system. The induced acoustic pressure waves which are generated by the increase in temperature due to the absorption of pulsed MV x-rays are simulated using an advanced numerical modeling package for acoustic wave propagation in the time domain. Two imaging techniques, back projection and iterative time reversal, are used to reconstruct the 3D dose distribution in a water phantom with open fields. Image analysis is performed and reconstructed depth dose curves from x-ray acoustic imaging are compared to the depth dose curves calculated from the treatment planning system. Calculated field sizes from the reconstructed dose profiles by back projection and time reversal are compared to the planned field size to determine their accuracy. The iterative time reversal imaging technique is also used to reconstruct dose in an example clinical dose distribution. Image analysis of this clinical test case is performed using the gamma passing rate. In addition, gamma passing rates are used to validate the stopping criteria in the iterative time reversal method.Water phantom simulations showed that back projection does not adequately reconstruct the shape and intensity of the depth dose. When compared to the depth of maximum dose calculated by a treatment planning system, the maximum dose depth by back projection is shifted deeper by 55 and 75 mm for 4 × 4 cm and 10 × 10 cm field sizes, respectively. The reconstructed depth dose by iterative time reversal accurately agrees with the planned depth dose for a 4 × 4 cm field size and is shifted deeper by 12 mm for the 10 × 10 cm field size. When reconstructing field sizes, the back projection method leads to 18% and 35% larger sizes for the 4 × 4 cm and 10 × 10 cm fields, respectively, whereas the iterative time reversal method reconstructs both field sizes with 2% error. For the clinical dose distribution, we were able to reconstruct the dose delivered by a 1 degree sub-arc with a good accuracy. The reconstructed and planned doses were compared using gamma analysis, with 96% gamma passing rate at 3%/2 mm.Our results show that the 3D x-ray acoustic reconstructed dose by iterative time reversal is considerably more accurate than the dose reconstructed by back projection. Iterative time reversal imaging has a potential for use in 3D absolute dosimetry.

Purpose Real-time visualization of target motion using fiducial markers during radiation therapy treatment will allow for more accurate dose delivery. The purpose of this study was to optimize techniques for online fiducial marker tracking by detecting the scattered treatment beam through coded aperture imaging (CAI). Coded aperture imaging is a novel imaging technique that can allow target tracking in real time during treatment, and do so without adding any additional radiation dose, by making use of the scattered treatment beam radiation. Methods Radiotherapy beams of various energies, incident on phantoms containing gold fiducial markers were modeled using MCNP6.2 Monte Carlo transport code. Orthogonal scatter radiographs were collected through a CAI geometry. After decoding the simulated radiograph data, the centroid location and FWHM/SNR of the fiducial signals were analyzed. The effects of properties related to the CA (rank, pattern, and physical dimensions), detector (dimensions and pixel count), position (CA and phantom), and the incident beam (spectrum and direction) were investigated. These variables were evaluated by quantifying the positional accuracy, resolution, and SNR of the fiducials' signal. The effects of phantom scatter and decoding artifacts were reduced via Fourier filtering to avoid treatment interruption and physical interaction with the coded mask. Results The method was able to accurately localize the markers to within 1 pixel of a simulated radiograph. A 10 × 10 × 2 cm tungsten mask was chosen to attenuate >99 % of incident scatter through opaque elements, while minimizing collimation artifacts which arise from vignetting of the coded radiograph. Clear separation of centroids from fiducial signals with 2.5 mm separation was maintained, and initial optimization of parameters has produced an aperture which decodes the location of multiple fiducial markers inside a human phantom properly with a high SNR in the final radiograph image. Conclusion Current results show a proof of concept for a novel real-time imaging method. Coded aperture imaging is a promising technique for extracting the fiducial scatter signal from a broader Compton-scatter background. These results can be used to further optimize the CAI parameter space and guide fabrication and testing of a clinical device.

Pulse shape discrimination (PSD) is an important method that can efficiently sort and separate neutron and gamma radiation signals. PSD is currently achieved in plastic scintillators by over-doping poly(vinyl toluene) (PVT) matrices with fluorescent molecules. Meaningful separation of the signals requires addition of >20 wt% 2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO) fluor in PVT. At these concentrations PPO acts as a plasticizer, negatively affecting the physical properties of the final plastic such as hardness, machinability, and thermomechanical stability. This work addresses these issues by implementing a cost-effective solution using cross-linking chemistry via commercially available bisphenol A dimethacrylate (BPA-DM), and a synthesized fluorinated analogue. Both improve the physical properties of over-doped PPO based plastic scintillators without degrading the measured light yield or PSD and Figure of Merit (FoM). In addition, the fluorinated analogue appears to enhance the hydrophobicity of the surface of the plastic scintillators, which may improve the scintillators’ resistance to water diffusion and subsequent radiation response degradation. The new formulations improve the feasibility of widely deploying long lifetime PSD capable plastic scintillators in large area coverage assemblies.

We report here on the synthesis and characterization of a novel 10 B enriched aromatic molecule that can be incorporated into common poly(vinyltoluene) (PVT) based plastic scintillators to achieve enhanced thermal neutron detection. Starting from relatively inexpensive 10 B enriched boric acid, we have prepared 4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-2-phenyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolane (MBB) in three high yield steps. MBB is soluble and compatible with PVT based formulations and results in stable plastic scintillators. Chemical synthesis, solubility limit in PVT, and the physical properties of the dopant were explored. The relevant response properties of the resulting scintillators when exposed to neutron and gamma radiation , including light yield and pulse shape discrimination properties were measured and analyzed.

A readily available and inexpensive boron compound was tested as an additive for the detection of thermal neutrons in plastic scintillators. Bis(pinacolato)diboron (B 2 Pin 2 ) was determined to be a compatible boron source (8.51 wt% boron, 1.70 wt% 10 B) in poly(vinyltoluene) based matrices. Plastic scintillator blends of 1–20 wt% 2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO), 0.1 wt% 1,4-bis(5-phenyloxazol-2-yl) benzene (POPOP) and 1–15 wt% B 2 Pin 2 were prepared that provided optical clarity, good mechanical properties, and the capability of thermal neutron detection. Independent of B 2 Pin 2 concentration, strong 10 B neutron capture signals around 90 keV ee were observed at essentially constant light output. Increasing PPO concentration allowed for the use of pulse shape discrimination (PSD) in both fast and thermal neutron detection. High PPO concentrations appear to cause additional alpha quenching that affected the 10 B neutron capture signal. Aging effects after storage in air for several months were observed, which led to degradation of performance and in some samples of mechanical stability.

Background: Nucleosynthesis of mid-mass elements is thought to occur under hot and explosive astrophysical conditions. Radiative α capture on S34 has been shown to impact nucleosynthesis in several such conditions, including core and shell oxygen burning, explosive oxygen burning, and type Ia supernovae. Purpose: Broad uncertainties exist in the literature for the strengths of three resonances within the astrophysically relevant energy range (ECM=1.94-3.42MeV at T=2.2GK). Further, there are several states in Ar38 within this energy range which have not been previously measured. This work aimed to remeasure the resonance strengths of states for which broad uncertainty existed as well as to measure the resonance strengths and energies of previously unmeasured states. Methods: Resonance strengths and energies of eight narrow resonances (five of which had not been previously studied) were measured in inverse kinematics with the DRAGON facility at TRIUMF by impinging an isotopically pure beam of S34 ions on a windowless He4 gas target. Prompt γ emissions of de-exciting Ar38 recoils were detected in an array of bismuth germanate scintillators in coincidence with recoil nuclei, which were separated from unreacted beam ions by an electromagnetic mass separator and detected by a time-of-flight system and a multianode ionization chamber. Results: The present measurements agree with previous results. Broad uncertainty in the resonance strength of the ECM=2709keV resonance persists. Resonance strengths and energies were determined for five low-energy resonances which had not been studied previously, and their strengths were determined to be significantly weaker than those of previously measured resonances. Conclusions: The five previously unmeasured resonances were found not to contribute significantly to the total thermonuclear reaction rate. A median total thermonuclear reaction rate calculated using data from the present work along with existing literature values using the STARLIB rate calculator agrees with the NON-SMOKER statistical model calculation as well as the REACLIB and STARLIB library rates at explosive and nonexplosive oxygen-burning temperatures (T=3-4GK and T=1.5-2.7GK, respectively).

Background: Classical novae are cataclysmic nuclear explosions occurring when a white dwarf in a binary system accretes hydrogen-rich material from its companion star. Novae are partially responsible for the galactic synthesis of a variety of nuclides up to the calcium ( A ∼ 40 ) region of the nuclear chart. Although the structure and dynamics of novae are thought to be relatively well understood, the predicted abundances of elements near the nucleosynthesis endpoint, in particular Ar and Ca, appear to sometimes be in disagreement with astronomical observations of the spectra of nova ejecta. Purpose: One possible source of the discrepancies between model predictions and astronomical observations is nuclear reaction data. Most reaction rates near the nova endpoint are estimated only from statistical model calculations, which carry large uncertainties. For certain key reactions, these rate uncertainties translate into large uncertainties in nucleosynthesis predictions. In particular, the 38 K ( p , γ ) 39 Ca reaction has been identified as having a significant influence on Ar, K, and Ca production. In order to constrain the rate of this reaction, we have performed a direct measurement of the strengths of three candidate l = 0 resonances within the Gamow window for nova burning, at 386 ± 10 keV, 515 ± 10 keV, and 689 ± 10 keV. Method: The experiment was performed in inverse kinematics using a beam of unstable 38 K impinged on a windowless hydrogen gas target. The 39 Ca recoils and prompt γ rays from 38 K ( p , γ ) 39 Ca reactions were detected in coincidence using a recoil mass separator and a bismuth-germanate scintillator array, respectively. Results: For the 689 keV resonance, we observed a clear recoil- γ coincidence signal and extracted resonance strength and energy values of 120 + 50 − 30 ( stat . ) + 20 − 60 ( sys . ) meV and 679 + 2 − 1 ( stat . ) ± 1 ( sys . ) keV , respectively. We also performed a singles analysis of the recoil data alone, extracting a resonance strength of 120 ± 20 ( stat . ) ± 15 ( sys . ) meV, consistent with the coincidence result. For the 386 keV and 515 keV resonances, we extract 90 % confidence level upper limits of 2.54 meV and 18.4 meV, respectively. Conclusions: We have established a new recommended 38 K ( p , γ ) 39 Ca rate based on experimental information, which reduces overall uncertainties near the peak temperatures of nova burning by a factor of ∼ 250 . Using the rate obtained in this work in model calculations of the hottest oxygen-neon novae reduces overall uncertainties on Ar, K, and Ca synthesis to factors of 15 or less in all cases.

Plastic scintillators are commonly used as first-line detectors for special nuclear materials. Current state-of-the-art plastic scintillators based on poly(vinyltoluene) (PVT) matrices containing high loadings (>15.0 wt %) of 2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO) offer neutron signal discrimination in gamma radiation background (termed pulse shape discrimination, PSD), however, they suffer from poor mechanical properties. In this work, a series of p-terphenyl and fluorene derivatives were synthesized and tested as dopants in PVT based plastic scintillators as possible alternatives to PPO to address the mechanical property issue and to study the PSD mechanism. The derivatives were synthesized from low cost starting materials in high yields using simple chemistry. The photophysical and thermal properties were investigated for their influence on radiation sensitivity/detection performance, and mechanical stability. A direct correlation was found between the melting point of the dopants and the subsequent mechanical properties of the PVT based plastic scintillators. For example, select fluorene derivatives used as dopants produced scintillator samples with mechanical properties exceeding those of the commercial PPO-based scintillators while producing acceptable PSD capabilities. The physical properties of the synthesized dopants were also investigated to examine their effect on the final scintillator samples. Planar derivatives of fluorene were found to be highly soluble in PVT matrices with little to no aggregation induced effects.

We have performed the first direct measurement of the 38Kðp; γÞ39Ca reaction using a beam of radioactive 38K. A proposed l ¼ 0 resonance in the 38K þ p system has been identified at 679(2) keV with an associated strength of 120 þ50 −30 meV. Upper limits of 1.16 (3.5) and 8.6 (26) meV at the 68% (95%) confidence level were also established for two further expected l ¼ 0 resonances at 386 and 515 keV, respectively. The present results have reduced uncertainties in the 38Kðp; γÞ39Ca reaction rate at temperatures of 0.4 GK by more than 2 orders of magnitude and indicate that Ar and Ca may be ejected in observable quantities by oxygen-neon novae. However, based on the newly evaluated rate, the 38Kðp; γÞ39Ca path is unlikely to be responsible for the production of Ar and Ca in significantly enhanced quantities relative to solar abundances.

A synthetic methodology is developed to generate boron rich aromatic small molecules based on benzene and pyrene moieties for the detection of thermal neutrons. The prepared aromatic compounds have a relatively high boron content up to 7.4 wt%, which is important for application in neutron detection as 10B (20% of natural abundance boron) has a large neutron induced reaction cross-section. This is demonstrated by preparing blends of the synthesized molecules with fluorescent dopants in poly(vinyltoluene) matrices resulting in comparable scintillation light output and neutron capture as state-of-the art commercial scintillators, but with the advantage of much lower cost. The boron-rich benzene and pyrene derivatives are prepared by Suzuki conditions using both microwave and traditional heating, affording yields of 40–93%. This new procedure is simple and straightforward and has the potential to be scaled up.
